Note
Are there invasive or otherwise huntable animals that aren't mammals? Because I hate how mammals taste, but your focus on mammals specifically makes me worry that wild turkey is somehow inherently less sustainable than feral hog or venison.
Off the top of my head, ring-necked pheasant was introduced to the USA as a game bird, and I'm pretty sure you can eat those just fine. There are a bajillion invasive birds here, the problem is whether or not they're worth eating. European sparrows are a huge problem but I don't think there's even half a chicken nugget's worth of sparrow per sparrow.
Wild turkeys are hunted but they're like...significantly smaller than the domestic variant. It's just not as much meat.
I'm not sure if you can eat Burmese python, but I'm sure some madman has tried it!
We have invasive fish and invasive frogs as well, I think. I don't know as much about those, but i'm pretty sure at least with the fish, officials are encouraging people to eat them.

Thai Food You Should Eat Because of BL
Tumblr media
Firstly most of these dishes have multiple spellings in English (and also often many different names within Thailand). I just picked one spelling, that will be enough to do a search, if you want to find a recipe for yourself.
Som Tum in What’s Zabb Man
Tumblr media
AKA Green Papaya Salad
I think this is the one most people will know on this list. Unlike overseas, in Thailand there are many varieties of som tum (I’ve had an ocean-side version served with little blue crabs, raw and in the shell, AMAZING). It’s often a street food, and it’s usually quite spicy. You order by either asking the vendor (it’s traditionally served from market stalls just as we saw at the beginning of this show) for a heat level or number of chilis. The ingredients are then pounded together with a massive mortar & pestle. The order and amounts of the different ingredients are chef-specific, so the variety and uniqueness is immense with this dish. There are fans of it who make a point of trying as many different versions in each city they visit. Like being a wine taster.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Som Tum highlights what I think is best about Thai food - it’s bright forward freshness and deep complexity of flavors. Som Tum is the firework-in-your-mouth of salads: sour, sweet, salty, spicy, umami, herbaceous. It’s a spectacular dish (which has been ill served by it’s ubiquitousness outside of Thailand). It should be made fresh, (this is NOT a slaw), because if it sits at all the elements become soggy and the flavor muddled.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What’s Zabb Man emphasized the important aspects of this dish. Its spiciness and its freshness, the uniqueness of its flavor, not to mention how each chef makes it his own.
After all when Poon goes missing, Athip finds him again because, after one taste of his Som Tum, he knows who is in the kitchen.
Kao Soi in Bite Me
Tumblr media
AKA Northern Thai Curry Noodle AKA Chiang Mai Curry Noodles
Did I do this post because I want to talk about this dish? Probubly. Here in the states it’s a rare to find on offer but it’s one of my absolute favorites.
I’m obsessed with diaspora foods in general - AKA fusion foods that highlight immigrant, colonial occupation, and/or blended communities. Lamb Vindaloo and Banh Mi are some famous examples of this. There was one banh mi place I found in Nor Cal run by a Chinese/Vietnamese couple that made a char siu pork + pâté banh mi, it was WILD and wicked good! Sorry, I digress.
This is a Northern Thai dish, common in Chang Mai, influenced by both Burmese (Myanmar) cuisine and local Chinese communities. It’s wildly variable by family and by region. This is also possibly one of my favorite foods. It’s notable in that it is one of the few traditional Thai dishes you will find served with chopsticks. (When I order it here in the states that’s one of the things I look for.)
Tumblr media
It is a noodle soup/stew. Can be rice, egg, or flour noodles, usually ramen style (but sometimes fettuccine), topped with a thick coconut forward curry broth, stewed dark meat chicken (usually on the bone) and raw onion. It has fried crispy flour noodles on top and is served with pickled vegetables, extra spices, fresh herbs, lime wedges, and raw shallots (or some combination thereof) - either on the top or on the side (banchan style). The curry element usually has more in common with Chinese or Japanese yellow curry powers (like those used for Singapore noodles) than red or green Thai curries. It combines what we would think of as traditional Thai flavor profiles with Chinese, and can also uses some Indian spices. It is a very layered dish, with more depth and earthiness and slightly less brightness than a lot of other Thai food. It tends to have a rounded heat to it (hitting all of the mouth, like Indian cuisine). I am a particular fan of the pickled greens element.
Tumblr media
Bite Me is not a great BL but Aek sharing his Chiang Mai roots with Chef Aue, most specifically around this dish, is key to the plot (what little there is). But this is not a dish that is served in Chef Aue’s restaurant.
Khai Palo in Enchanté
Tumblr media
AKA 5 Spice Pork & Egg Stew
This is the dish Theo remembers from his childhood that Akk’s family cooks for him. It’s a fascinating dish because it’s retains a very strong Chinese influence and is noted for using soy sauce as its salt element (rather than the more ubiquitous fish sauce) and for NOT being spicy, also it involves 5 spice.
Tumblr media
It’s also often associated with children or childishness and comfort food. It’s most commonly found as a street food or homemade, and is relatively rare in restaurants outside of Thailand. It has a similar flavor profile to Moo Gratiem which is one of my favorite dishes. (It’s that white peppercorn and garlic thing = NOM.) It’s also very easy to make, I recommend it. There is a Mama ramen noodle version you can sometimes find and buy, but I always need to add more five spice.
Tumblr media
In Enchanté this dish is a plot point and is interesting because it highlights both the time when Theo was last in Thailand (as a child), Akk’s interest in courting and caring for him, and Theo’s somewhat childish nature/behavior.
Gaeng Tai Pla in Close Friend 2
Tumblr media
AKA pickled fish sour soup
A famous dish developed in the fishing communities of Southern Thailand. Traditionally it involves pickled fish bladder (Tai Pla) + large chunks of dried fish meat, Thai eggplant, bamboo shoots, and/or seasonal greens, with a spice profile similar to tom (lemongrass, lime, shrimp paste, red chili).
I've never been lucky enough to eat this, but it's on my hit list. I think I could make something like it, but I can’t get hold of the the Tai Pla for love nor money.
Luk Choup in La Cuisine (& Until We Meet Again)
Tumblr media
AKA no other name, really, but this is also the main characters name in La Cuisine, ลูกชุบ (translation, coated pieces) but the meaning of this dessert is “loved by all, or adored.” This aspect of the name is a plot point in the series. Choup’s older brother, aunt, and grandmother all refer to him as the family’s beloved one, or special one, or most loved.
Luk Choup are tiny imitation fruits/vegetables (or occasionally star shapes) these are made of mung beans cooked with coconut milk and sugar. Once formed, they are dipped in gelatin and painted with food coloring to resemble other food. Recipe here.
Tumblr media
This one appeared multiple times in Until We Meet Again, on the bus, at the fair, and at the very end during Dean and Pharm’s separation.
I’ve eaten these.
Consistency wise the exterior is like a gummy but much tougher, and with a bite to it. So like if you made jello into sheets but with too much gelatin. I’ve actually never had anything else to compare to this texture, perhaps like some of the bits in bubble teas? The interior is like very thick humus meets the inside of a peanut butter cup.
Tumblr media
As for taste, the gel outside has no flavor and the inside tastes a lot like red bean paste. They are not very sweet.
Here’s a YT vid on how to make these.
Chor Muang in Until We Meet Again
Tumblr media
AKA Blue Flower Dumpling
Chor Muang is a purple or blue flower-shaped dumpling that is savory, stuffed with a spiced minced chicken. These days it is a popular appetizer but it was once served as a dessert. The coloring is done with butterfly pea flour. Recipe here.
Tumblr media
Chor Muang is a major catalyst food for the plot of Until We Meet Again. It is featured in a play starring Del and Manaow and is the reason Pharm meets and befriends Del. This allows him to start helping fix Dean’s strained family dynamic.
Tumblr media
Later he feeds this dumpling to Team, Win, and Dean in front of witnesses. This is the first time he feeds Dean (it will not be the last.)
I did a post all about the sweets in this show. Here’s a YT vid on how to make these.
Nom Yen in SOTUS (also 2 Moons, 2 Moons 2)
Tumblr media
AKA Pink Milk
Pink milk is pretty ubiquitous in most Thai BL series. Technically, its origin for association with BL is the original y-novel of 2 Moons. However, most international watchers are familiar with it from SOTUS (more recently it has shown up associated with side characters in Nitman and Love Area).
Tumblr media
After watching SOTUS and both 2 Moons installments I got curious. Here’s the full post I did on pink milk, how it’s made and my experience attempting to recreate it. I can see why it might be thought of as a childish drink, it reminded me a bit of birthday cake flavoring, ice cream bean, or cotton candy. It’s very sweet and not a whole lot else.
Tumblr media
THAI LANGUAGE CORNER
I haven’t learned the minutia yet but around ordering food in Thai but the Thai bestie always complains the monikers (also verbs?) for dishes have to do with what the dish is usually served inside. So some dishes have names/consumption verbs that have to do with bowls and others with plates.
Much as in English we would use the verb “drink” for broth but “eat” for soup. (And also argue about which one is appropriate under which circumstances.)
To train your ear for BL food:
gin = to eat or to have a meal (also under certain circumstances/sentence structures is slang for to sexually consume or fuck). See Pharm misuse this one in UWMA when Dean first visits his condo.
khao or kao = food but also actually rice, also a name and also third person he pronoun
talay = the ocean and also mixed seafood and a name
pad = usually means a stir fried (dryer) dish
pak = veggies!
kai (sounds like gai) = chicken ไก่ but also egg ไข่ (yes they are different in intonation and spelling, but really I find it darn near impossible to hear the difference)
A list of some common dishes is here.
Please leave a comment if any other dish has shown up you want to talk about, because this is basically my favorite topic EVER. I love to eat and cook Thai food so, yeah. Also the oft mentioned Thai bestie is an AMAZING cook. I often act the part of her kitchen goblin.

Hey Y’all Animal Cruelty Warning
I don’t normally do this, but I just found out about something that has my blood boiling. I’ve been a pet owner my whole life—dogs, cats, and more—and have always considered pets to be family. Yes, even the fish I won at a fair; yes, even my chickens; yes, even the snakes.
Snakes can be a controversial pet—a lot of folks find them creepy. That’s perfectly fine, not everyone has to like the same thing. Some states have made owning certain snakes illegal; that’s also fine, assuming they’re doing so for the right reasons and handle it appropriately.
Then there’s Florida. In 2021, it became illegal to own reticulated and Burmese pythons in the state of Florida. This is because of an issue with them acting as an invasive species; due mostly to hurricanes, pet snakes in the wild became feral and were able to breed, resulting in native reptiles struggling to compete and occasionally becoming prey to the pythons.
That still leads to the trouble of persons who had owned pythons legally prior to 2021. Persons who legally owned these snakes before the ban are allowed to retain ownership until the pet’s death. Also, there is an amnesty program in place which allows exotic pet owners to continue caring for their animals until an appropriate home is found—this is run by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, or FWC.
Then this happened. More than thirty snakes were killed with a bolt gun, without anesthesia. Included among them was a boa constrictor named Big Shirl. Boas are not illegal pets. Big Shirl was pregnant at the time of her death—yes, I do mean pregnant, too, as boas give live birth and do not lay external eggs. In this video you can see Big Shirl writhing for several minutes after she was shot; Big Shirl was a beloved pet who had been part of her owner’s family for more than ten years, and as a boa, should have been in his life for at least ten more.
The owner was not present on his property when officers of the FWC came to kill his animals; the video above was taken by a friend who had worked with the owner for years and describes being present for the hatching of every snake they killed. He also had explained about the boa, who they were not to touch—the officers were aware of this, as shown by their own expressions after realizing they’d wrongfully killed Big Shirl. He can be heard on the video, clearly distraught by what was happening.
The video shows that the officer using the bolt gun is untrained and unfamiliar with the device; one officer poses for a picture with one of the snakes they killed, too. The animals are pulled out of their enclosures and shot in the head with the bolt gun without any anesthesia—most reptile vets do not use this method. In fact, snakes can be euthanized the same way a cat or dog can. These animals were slaughtered for no reason other than existing in the wrong place at the wrong time.
I genuinely feel sick. These animals should have been safe—they were in their homes, being actively loved and cared for. I know I would be devastated if this were done to any of my pets—and when I think back on the temperament of the sweet little ball python I was lucky enough to help care for as a child, it makes me sick to think that someone could take such a trusting and loving creature from his safe place and deliver a slow, agonizing death. I just don’t have the words for how upset I am right now.
If any of you have the time, consider calling the people involved with the FWC. If you aren’t comfortable calling, here are all the emails I was able to find:
[email protected] Chief Communications Officer
[email protected] Acting Executive Director
[email protected] Deputy Chief of Staff
[email protected] Chief of Staff
[email protected] Chief Financial Officer
Please, please, please do what you can to help bring this to more people’s attention. Dozens of pets were just cruelly and unethically killed—these people need to understand how wrong what they did was, and they can only learn by being told. The owners and family of these reptiles deserve to know that they are not alone and that they have people who will support them.

"About the Blogger" meme
Aw thank you for tagging me @happylikeasadsong and @currymanganese . Belatedly getting around to this.
Star Sign(s): Cancer sun, Cancer moon, Taurus rising. Water and earth, yo! It gets muddy over here. A decent amount of fire and air in my whole chart, too.
Favorite Holidays: Christmas, it's the lights and Ave Maria and Joy to the World what can I say.
Last Meal: Burmese mango chicken and coconut rice with browned coconut flakes on top of the rice. Delish! I would eat that coconut rice every day, just by itself. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Current Favorite Musician: First Aid Kit is a current favorite, love sister duos. Khruangbin has been an obsession for awhile.
Last Music Listened To: Monster Rally. Lately I need no lyrics. Just take me away please. Into the stars, into the universe.
Last Movie Watched: well the fam bam was out of the house so I took advantage to leisurely wrap presents, sip my bevvie, and watch not one but two xmas movies back to back. Last Christmas and Love Hard. Both were fun! Last Christmas: it got me at being an homage to George Michael songs the whole way through. Love Hard: catfishing turned love story, okaaaayy, I'm with you. These holiday romcoms though, wince, cringe, love you/hate you.
Last TV Show Watched: I finally started Pen15 and it is EEK watching these adult actors play this young age so well, it is so wild. I'm also slowly watching Only Murders in the Building (do I like it? I think so… Selena Gomez is killin it and I gotta say I love her makeup line) and also Not Dead Yet (hmm, didn't realize there was a death theme). I just really enjoy Gina Rodriguez and it’s a fun sitcom and makes me miss Jane the Virgin.
Randomly found Crashing from 2016—Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s writing had me belly laughing in a few spots and I almost want to say I'd have preferred this show to continue with another season than Flea Bag getting two seasons, which I rewatched a few eps of to remind myself and compare with Crashing, and while FB was such a good show that got acclaim, like Crashing is sort of the funnier prequel (for PWB?) with an ensemble cast? And fuckin Jonathan Bailey is in it? Both lead characters played by PWB are annoying af to me, probably in a good way.
I hope to get through all these but the Bear has me fixated.
Last Book/Fic Finished: Ok well let me pull out my dusty kindle now to see what I last read. All really good recent reads: If I Survive You, True Biz, Black Cake, Kindred, the Book of Form and Emptiness, the Island of Sea Women. Okay, I feel I need another worthy book to maybe offset my Sydcarmy obsession. These were good books. Books are good. Note to self: read a book!!!!!!!
Last Book/Fic Abandoned: I'm a mama, I can't tell you what fics I like best and which I abandoned!?!? I love all your fics my sydcarmys and honestly I want to read more. Last book I abandoned: What Fresh Hell is This. It's a funny and serious book about menopause that I started reading it to see if I could recommend to a client because I haven't been througu it, but I just can't yet. Glad it's out there tho. One day.
Currently Reading: Nothing. I'm waiting for something good. I need something good. I'm afraid to start more sydcarmy fics because then I won't sleep til 3am.
Last Thing Researched for Art/Writing/Hyperfixation: Never you mind
Favorite Online Fandom Memory: Being in an online fandom is actually pretty new for me, I’m sort of an oldie and I’ve been missing out. Just finding the sydcarmy tag has been revolutionary. It’s so fun, mind blowing, brain rotting, and I respect y’all so much.
Favorite Old Fandom You Wish Would Drag You Back In/Have A Resurgence: Since I mentioned it already: Jane the Virgin, and I'm guessing it had a divided ship fandom, and I could personally never decide who I liked best for Jane even though SPOILERS I knew Rafael was endgame. I hated what they did to Michael, HATED it. (SPOILERS let him RIP.) Not saying I’d want a resurgence, more that I wish I’d been there because I was so alone in my angst over obvious endgame guy versus so much unexpected chemistry with the other guy and they like worked that into the show and made me wonder if they were gonna change their minds about who was endgame? That was enticing and nerve wracking. Also I ship the three generations of women and, Rogelio with himself, but with Xiomara, too.
Favorite Thing You Enjoy That Never Had an Active or Big "Fandom" but You Wish It Did: I don't know. I really want to have a good answer. I was not here. I seriously thought tumblr was a dating app for like the longest time. What a dummy. I needed this.
Tempting Project You're Trying to Rein In/Don't Have Time For: I am my own tempting project.

Pythons are true choke artists

Pythons are true choke artists
Burmese pythons are not just big snakes, growing to more than 18 feet and 200 pounds, but big eaters, taking on prey as large as a deer.
Biologists at the University of Cincinnati found that it’s not just the size of its head and body that puts almost everything on a python’s menu. They evolved super-stretchy skin between their lower jaws that allows them to consume prey up to six times larger than similar-sized snakes.
The study, funded in part by a grant from the National Science Foundation, was published in the journal Integrative Organismal Biology.
Since most snakes swallow prey whole, they must have wide mouths to accommodate a meal. Unlike our lower jawbone, the lower jawbones of snakes are not connected, allowing them to open wide.
“The stretchy skin between left and right lower jaws is radically different in pythons. Just over 40% of their total gape area on average is from stretchy skin,” lead author and UC biology professor Bruce Jayne said. “Even after you correct for their large heads, their gape is enormous.”
Pythons are constrictors. They bite their prey and wrap their powerful coils around it, fatally cutting off the animal’s vital blood flow, before consuming it whole at their leisure.
advertisement
The bigger the prey, the more energy a snake derives from a meal. For pythons, that means not having to hunt as often, which can carry extensive risk in a world full of busy roads and dangerous predators.
Along with pythons, Jayne studied the gape size of brown tree snakes, a mildly venomous arboreal specialist that hunts birds and other animals in the forest canopy. Brown tree snakes were introduced in the 1950s to Guam, wiping out many bird species.
Besides measuring the snakes, Jayne also measured the dimensions and weight of potential prey animals. This allowed Jayne to use snake size to predict the maximal size of its prey and the relative benefits of consuming different types such as alligators, chickens, rats or deer.
Small snakes derive greater benefits in relative prey mass from a modest increase in gape size, the study found. This gives python babies an early advantage in taking on a broader range of prey compared to other snakes their size, Jayne said.
Being big also helps snakes avoid becoming meals themselves. Snakes fall prey to everything from wading birds to minks and raccoons to alligators and other snakes.
advertisement
“Once those pythons get to a reasonable size, it’s pretty much just alligators that can eat them,” Jayne said. “And pythons eat alligators.”
Like invasive brown tree snakes in Guam, Burmese pythons are wreaking havoc on the ecology of Everglades National Park where they were introduced due to the release of captive animals from the exotic pet trade in the 1980s.
Study co-author Ian Bartoszek works as an environmental science project manager for the Conservancy of Southwest Florida, where he has led a project to track pythons. They implant radio transmitters in male snakes during breeding season to find females before they can lay more clutches of eggs. A big female python can lay more than 100 eggs.
Researchers routinely find deer hooves and the remains of other big animals in their stomachs. Bartoszek photographed one python regurgitating a full-grown white-tailed deer.
“The Everglades ecosystem is changing in real time based on one species, the Burmese python,” Bartoszek said.
The good news is that pythons rarely attack people. Bartoszek said the only defensive encounters he’s had with wild pythons are with females guarding their nests.
“It’s way more dangerous to drive there than to work with the snakes,” he said.

Official Post About Lifestyle Changes
The date is January 28, 2021.
I have not had chickens for a while. It will be 2 years in August. I have been meaning to write something here about all of it, but I either have not had time, or the willpower to go through with it. I was in grieving.
In June of 2019, I took a trip from my shared homestead in Mississippi to Colorado to do some long distance hiking. I left all of my animals in the care of my ex husband’s mother and her then boyfriend.
I trusted them to at least do the bare minimum in my animal’s basic care.
That didn’t happen. They failed night after night to close and lock the coop’s door. They wouldn’t change their water during the day and they did not collect eggs.
When I had service on my phone during the hike, I checked in with them to find out that because they had not closed or locked the coop door at night, several birds were “missing”, with more missing every day.
Instead of simply closing the door and providing a safe space for my dear, darling animals to sleep at night, they decided to buy a game camera to see what was happening to them at night.
Their reasoning had absolutely zero logic, and I was pretty pissed.
They found that raccoons were simply just waltzing into the coops and grabbing birds. The raccoons would drag them away into the woods and feast.
By the time our trip was almost over, all of my ducks were gone. There were only a few chickens left, and the guinea fowl were all intact due to roosting 50ft up in oak trees. My cat was also “missing”.
I was heartbroken, devastated. I had spent so much money, time, energy, and love to build this flock. I wanted to provide my “family” and myself with sustainable, renewable food in case of a natural disaster. No one seemed to value my efforts, or even care to see what my end goal was.
On top of grieving for the loss of my feathered babies, my then husband’s younger brother decided to GO OFF on me during our drive back to Mississippi. He claimed I was selfish, psychotic, uncaring, and manipulative. He screamed at me while we were all stuck in the car. He called me a bitch, he called me a liar, he called me a leech. I was stunned in silence. I had been struggling with my mental health for years, and had contemplated suicide more times than I could count. So, it is no surprise that while we were driving 70mph on the interstate, I seriously contemplated opening the car door and leaping out into traffic.
I turned to my husband, my partner, the love of my life, my support system, to back me up. Defend me. Tell his brother that he was wrong. My husband did nothing of the sort. He remained silent as the verbal barrage from his brother continued.
Everything clicked for me then. My mother in law was a complete nutcase, she blamed me for all of my husband’s shortcomings. She viewed me as a failure for not being the perfect housewife. She only saw me as a burden on her son’s happiness. My husband maintained an emotional distance from me for several years. He refused to be intimate towards me. He never showed an interest in me, my thoughts, my feelings. He never stood up for me or was proud to show me off. He never commended my strengths and triumphs, he only pointed out what he viewed were my failures. My brother in law was more of a nutcase than his mother, physically abusing his dog and neglecting his cat, leeching off of his mother and getting handouts at every possible opportunity, spending his days smoking hundreds of dollars of marijuana, drinking booze, playing videogames.
I had no social life, I wasn’t allowed to have a social life.
I had no friends I could hang out with, all of my friends were online.
No matter how much I did for these people and how much I excelled at everything I did, nothing was ever enough. I was never enough.
No wonder I struggled with mental health, eh?
I came to this realization instantaneously, and demanded to be dropped off at my dad’s house in Westminster, CO.
I had none of my personal belongings besides my hiking and camping stuff. I didn’t care, I just had to get away from these toxic monsters.
My husband and I loosely decided that this would be a “break” for our relationship, and that he would go back to MS to work and save up to move here with me. I agreed and I began working and saving up myself.
We both knew he was never going to come here. We were never going to be together again.
We remained in close contact for a few months after the separation. But the contact and our conversations became fewer and less substantial.
One night, as I was walking home from work, I called and told him that I thought we should break up. He admitted to me that he had removed his wedding ring over three weeks prior. I was understandably hurt by that, but I did understand.
He also informed me that all of the birds were gone or dead except for a couple roosters.
I was more devastated by the loss of my birds than the loss of my marriage. If that doesn’t tell you enough, I don’t know what does!!
My cat never returned.
I asked him if we could keep in contact, and he told me he did not want to talk to me or hear from me for several years. I was once again hurt by this, but with his own mental health issues, I again, understood. He did say he can see us being friends in the future, but now that its been some time, I don’t want to be friends with him. I want the best for him, but I can’t bring myself to expose my mentality to his toxicity and negativity.
I asked again and again, over a period of months, for him to return my belongings. He kept putting it off. I told him I was going to drive down there myself and gather everything i could and dispose of the rest.
He agreed, initially, then banned me from coming only after I requested the time off from work and had friends to accompany me on the journey, He promised he’d send all my stuff in several shipments after he sold my car. I told him he could keep the profit from the sale of my car and use it to send me my stuff.
He ended up sending me ONE box of my stuff. And most of it wasn’t even mine. I was appalled and disgusted that he’d be so careless and inconsiderate.
I sent him messages and requested SPECIFIC items after I received the first box. I got no reply, and no more packages to this day have been sent.
He and his family stole my property, killed my pets, and broke my heart.
Thieves, liars, and extremists, the lot of them.
I grieve daily for the loss of my animals and the torture I was put through for nearly 6 years.
All of that out of the way, let me move on to tell you what this blog will now feature.
I have obviously had a change in lifestyle. I no longer live on homesteading land, I live in a roomy two bedroom apartment with my AMAZING fiance.
My love of chickens, I discovered, was a love for reptiles in general. Cuz birds are reptiles and all that jazz.
When I met my fiance, I was already blown away by his attitude, confidence, and view on life right off the bat! He inspired me, made me want to be better to myself.
Meeting him felt weird, at first. It felt weird because I was waiting for this amazing person to... have a catch. There’s gotta be a red flag somewhere. And if there isn’t... he is probably a psychopath who will eventually turn on me and kill me. No one is that... good.
So I thought to myself, “Welp, gotta find out. I’ll go to his house!”
He had a couple little snakes in his room which I demanded to play with. He happily got them out and I was like “THAT’S the catch? Nah, this just convinces me this guy is... my kind of guy.”
I’ve had a love of snakes since early childhood. Not an interest of passion, but I truly loved interacting with and watching them. I’ve never had an innate fear of any insect, (exclude honeybee, because I didn’t know better at 6 years old), or animal. I love them all and everything they do to contribute. All they experience.
I used to catch wild garter snakes and rat snakes in nets, pet them, show them to my mother occasionally to freak her out, and release them. Then watch them.
There were a mating pair of Oteekee Corn Snakes in my HS yard. Every summer we’d see them, out and about hunting, hiding, climbing... growing. They were bright red and jet black with specks of yellow. I could tell these guys were pretty smart and maybe there was more to snakes than I really thought about ever.
So, being sold on this amazing guy, we up and moved in together. Nice. My paycheck kept going up and up. I was saving a ton. I wanted a car and an apartment as soon as possible.
I got bonus after bonus for working hard at my job and everyone hitting labor targets.
We got a place. Nice.
Both got steady jobs. Nice.
There’s uh, a lot of room in this new place. Nice.
Hey it’s my birthday and I can get myself a snake. I have more than enough for supplies and the animal itself.
I browsed on morphmarket for what felt like ages....
I had no idea that there were.... so many complicated genetics with ball pythons. I was highly interested, because if you know me, you know I’m interested in genetics and selective breeding.
I found there were THOUSANDS of genetic combinations, each with unique names. It was like alien code. The animals were beautiful but I had no idea what I was really looking at.
One night while going to our local reptile store to get feeder rats, I was looking around at all the glass window babies, as I usually do.
I made my way around the scorpions, tarantulas, cave scorpions, frogs, lizards, the store’s companion burmese python, and my eyes landed on a little... adorable puppy-eyed baby ball python. The signage stated that it was a Puma. Seemed simple enough. Easy name to remember. I looked into the glass at the lil noodle, and talked all baby talk and shit. The sweet little thing came right up to scope at me, then yawned.
I called an employee over and said I’d like to handle this animal right here. The employee obliged and I fell in love. Sexed as male. Easy buy.
I cried on the way home, It was amazing. I have one picture on here of him a few days after I got him. His name is Mallow, and he is bigger now, but still just as sweet.
So yeah. It went from there. Now, including the boa and ball python that are my fiance’s, and Mallow, we have added 3 more to our family. We are done now, as these animals may live a loooooong time. And they require space and attention just like any other pet. They’re not expensive, and they’re low maintenance care is nearly brainless if you set it up right. They’re statistically and actually safer than dogs or cats, and are absolutely therapeutic and entertaining.
This blog will from this day forward be dedicated to snake content, reptile content, and a lot more fun, actually good pictures. I will also share genetic related stuff I find relevant.
Not having a shitty phone camera is pretty great, tbh.
TLDR: No more homestead. Ex is evil (yeah yeah), New place new animal new me. SNAKES! SNAKES!!!! SNAAAAAAAAAKKKKKKKKEEEEESSSSS!
I know this post is just for me but whatever, if I make myself laugh. Cool. G’night.

What animal do you think suits each of the umbrella kids the most?
okay what you don’t know is that i’m a sucker for a his dark materials au with daemons so i’m sorry if that’s not what you want but that’s what you’re getting lmao
forewarning: this is super self indulgent and i only have actual reasons for like maybe half of these
Luther: a dog! If you want specifics probably an Anatolian Shepherd dog bc they’re big motherfuckers and muscular as fuck. I did toy with a big animal like a bear but ultimately I think a dog just because simply: Luther obeys Reginald without question and has incredibly loyalty to a man that never cared about his wellbeing. Plus, you know, the family would rib at him about being Reginald’s loyal dog and all that. Plus it’s a good set up for his rivalry with Diego that I’ll yell about in a minute.
So yes, Luther’s daemon settles as a bigass dog. She’s pragmatic and can be cold and often tries to model herself after Reginald’s daemon. She can be somewhat self righteous and very blunt. She tends to say exactly what she’s thinking without sugar coating it and doesn’t care if Luther has to stumble to save face. “You think one of us killed dad.” Diego says. “No not ‘one of you’, specifically you, Diego. You have an alibi?” Luther’s daemon says in front of the family, god, and Five’s portrait on the mantle.
Diego: a wolf! This sets up a big rivalry between Diego and Luther as they have somewhat similar daemons except for the fact that Luther’s is a domesticated canine and Diego’s is a wild one. Luther often uses Diego’s daemon to say that Diego is too wild to lead the team and that’s why he’s in charge. It’s mainly because while Diego does his whole lone wolf act, he’s shown to be pretty protective of the people he considers his and really he does need a pack. Even though he tells Klaus no, he doesn’t bother enforcing it when Klaus insists on hopping in the car anyway. He wants to be leader of the pack, but is awkward when he tries to be in charge bless his heart.
Diego’s wolf daemon is a not-so-secret softie. She prompts Diego to interact more with his family and sends longing glances towards Detective Patch and her daemon. She doesn’t get along with Luther’s daemon and always bristles when she’s around, though Luther’s daemon tends to ignore Diego’s and act like she’s above it all which just makes the issue even worse tbh. Diego’s daemon doesn’t shy away from her instincts and refers to the family as her pack and is very vocal about both not killing Grace (though later she sits and whines when Diego does it) and letting Vanya out (Diego spits vitriol about Vanya but his daemon is suspiciously silent on the subject).
Allison: a burmese python! I will freely admit that i chose this 90% because of the feather boa in the beginning dance scene because I want Allison to have her daemon constantly draped around her neck and on her body, but snakes do tend to be associated with manipulation as well in some stories even though I can’t see it looking at their cute little faces?? But I mean Allison’s whole gig is manipulation so it fits even though I’m only justifying it after the fact lmao.
Allison’s daemon is very laid back and rarely speaks up. Allison often accuses him of being lazy because she tends to carry him everywhere and he’s constantly on the hunt for warm places to curl up in. He used to ride on the back of Luther’s daemon a lot when Allison got fed up of carrying him. Uses the fact that he doesn’t have eyelids to stare people down when they’re being irritating. Generally does not appreciate the negative press that comes with being a snake daemon and secretly him and Allison both wonder if him being a snake was a factor in her not getting custody of Claire. (Allison didn’t appreciate what he settled as and they fought about it, there’s still some tension between them on occasion because of it)
Klaus: a black cat! I almost gave him a raven because reasons but I ended up with a cat for pretty simple reasons: Klaus is pretty much a stray cat in human form tbh just look at him. Also because cats stare off into corners like they can see the dead and damned so I thought it was somewhat appropriate, and black cats are considered both lucky and unlucky depending on where you like (which lemme tell you as a black cat owner who moved from a lucky to unlucky area was a wild thing to find out).
Klaus’s daemon is very sarcastic and a lot less forgiving than Klaus himself is. They hold a grudge to say the least. While most daemons tend not to speak to people who aren’t their own, Klaus’s daemon doesn’t give a single shit and will talk to anyone they damn well please. Doesn’t get along with Luther’s daemon because they constantly talk shit about Reggie and Reggie’s daemon, but gets along very well with Diego’s daemon and has ridden on her shoulder more than once. Shares Klaus’s power in that they can see the dead but ignores them even harder than Klaus because they’re secretly freaked out that ghosts don’t have daemons. Klaus and his daemon also hang out with Ben’s daemon, who for reasons unknown didn’t burst into dust upon Ben’s death but she generally stays out of sight.
Five: one part of me says hare because of the cryptic value and eyes that look like they could kill you and also jumping jokes and another part of me says hummingbird for plenty of good reasons but an even larger part of me says that I don’t have to choose because I can just symbolically make his daemon unsettled. She wasn’t settled before the apocalypse and then he kind of… never really grew up. Part of a daemon settling is growing up and knowing yourself but Five didn’t have a chance to do that, he was too focused on his goal. They both dislike the fact that she’s unsettled because they think it’s childish, but it’s also very handy because it means she’s adaptable as fuck. Maybe she pretends she’s settled as a hare or something while they work for the Commission idk and it’s a little reveal when he’s back home. Maybe they’re also separated like a witch’s daemon due to the Commission?? unclear
Five’s daemon tends to fade into the background if you’ll let her. She tends to be standoffish but is exceptionally observant. She very rarely speaks to anyone outside of Five, even among the siblings, though she’s not above bluntly calling them out if Five isn’t around and she deems it necessary. She likes Vanya best, though she was also fond of Ben. She tends to be the voice of reason for Five and probably takes most of Dolores’s lines in telling him drinking is bad for him or that his equations are wrong. There’s probably a dramatic scene where she’s revealed to be unsettled where she turns into a big fuckoff animal and fucks up the Handler or something idk but otherwise she’s pretty content to remain a hare and do a good impression of the rabbit from monty python if people fuck with her.
Ben: something smaller and easily hidden. My heart says rat because they’re so fucking good and smart so that’s what I’m going to run with, and also because they’re often viewed negatively and Ben has a power that he also views negatively rip. Also I’m gonna be real the idea of Klaus and Ben’s daemons being absolute bros as a cat and a rat also amuses me so there’s that and this is my au i do what i want.
Ben’s daemon was withdrawn before his death and even more so after. No one knows why she didn’t turn to dust when Ben died, but she didn’t. None of the other siblings knew that she survived because she asked Klaus not to tell, worried that Reginald would experiment on her to try and figure out why she didn’t vanish. She spent most of their time before Klaus left hiding in his room, and after she hides in his clothes a lot and likes when he wears items with hoods (like Ben used to) because she likes to curl up in them. Like Five’s daemon, she doesn’t talk much.
Vanya: a spotted owl! I wanted to give Vanya a winged daemon that can’t fly for most of the duration of the plot despite having wings because of general symbolism reasons regarding Reginald “clipping her wings” by suppressing her powers with medication and all that. Honestly I mostly picked a spotted owl on a whim because I like owls (I was a guardians of gahoole kid) and I think that the hints of white on a spotted owl would be a cool allusion to her powers and also there’s some sick imagery in her powers activating and her daemons colors reversing so that he’s primarily white soooo i do what i want is the answer
Like I said above, Vanya’s daemon is a bird daemon who… doesn’t fly. He mostly spends his time on a perch that Vanya bought for him in her apartment. He doesn’t actually spend a lot of time physically on Vanya outside of when they’re travelling somewhere, and she usually puts him down immediately when she arrives at her destination. He usually just walks about the house but like a chicken can do a sort of jump/flap combo to get up to surfaces so he’s alright for the most part. I want to say part of Leonard’s manipulations was that he also has a bird daemon and they try and teach Vanya’s daemon to fly as well as for her to access her powers.
and outside of the main kids (these aren’t nearly as well thought out and are liable to change probably -
Reginald: a fox. Cunning and intelligent and adaptable, she’s regal and stone cold, never speaking directly to any of the children and she often acts as if they don’t exist or are so far beneath her they might as well not. Her coat is always pristine, her dark eyes are always watching, and her teeth are dazzling and sharp and threatening even though the kids see her far more rarely than they do their father. She’s a ruthless pragmatist and often served as an observer during their training, after which she would whisper in Reginald’s ear and oftentimes there was a new and inventive torture waiting for them. Sometimes the kids feared her more than they feared their father. She’s only ever shown anything even approaching affection to Luther’s daemon, and even that was just brushing herself past the other daemon and allowing a brief touch.
Hazel: a big grizzly bear. They often both complain about the lack of accommodations for large daemons when she has to squeeze her ass into their tiny motel rooms or in diner booths and restaurant tables in general. Tends to just stay in the hotel room and allow people to assume Hazel has a small daemon since they’re separated and her bulk is often cumbersome for missions. Has 100% charged in as the cavalry and fucked people up though don’t mistake her whining for her not being very dangerous.
Cha-Cha: my heart says a mountain lion and so that’s what i’m going with. Large and can do a lot of damage given the opportunity with those claws, pretty sneaky and damn good at his job. Is probably the one who scruffs Klaus’s daemon when they kidnap him from the house. He has a wicked sense of humor that Cha-Cha doesn’t always appreciate and always goes with for missions because he genuinely enjoys their work, doesn’t understand why Hazel’s daemon would rather stay behind.
Grace: yes I understand that Grace is a robot and no that’s not going to stop me from saying that Reginald gave her a mechanical clockwork butterfly daemon because I say so and because I think his daemon would have insisted that it’s far too creepy to look and see a human without a daemon and he’s trying to make her as realistic as possible, right? The butterfly is technically an extension of Grace, however Reginald never gave her daemon a voicebox because he deemed it unnecessary. He usually just sits on Grace’s shoulder slowly opening and closing his wings. A plot point is Grace finally naming her daemon for herself because Reginald never bothered with a name for him either.
The Handler: The Handler doesn’t have a daemon. Five asks her where her daemon is in the flashback scene where she recruits him and she laughs and tells him that that’s a rude question and never answers him. The daemon never shows up and other people and their daemons are noticeably unsettled by this. Five’s daemon genuinely is frightened by the Handler and tends to hide behind him, which the Handler comments upon with a saccharine smile. They never do figure out what happened to her daemon (though one of the office workers shares a rumor with Five that the Handler killed her own daemon for questioning the commission).
Patch: a terrier! My heart says border terrier so that’s what I’m going with. Dogged and unwilling to let go when she feels like she’s on the scent of something, she’s a good police officer even if she has torn loyalty to Diego as well. He’s a hardy little thing and he encourages her to bend the rules so much so that it used to be a running joke that her daemon might as well be Diego’s. Her daemon doesn’t bother with the hostilities and is always pleased to see Diego’s daemon. For the most part they just watch their idiot humans snipe at one another and are content to chill until Patch makes Diego leave. Their daemons always cheerfully say bye to each other and that they’ll see the other again soon even
Dave: my heart says also a dog. Probably a farm dog. Australian Cattle Dog, maybe? because my heart also says that Dave was probably raised as a good honest farm boy or at the VERY LEAST his grandparents had a farm he spent his summers on as a child. Very loyal. She absolutely adores Klaus and his daemon and Klaus’s daemon curled up with her constantly. Touching another person’s daemon is a social booboo but out there in Vietnam both daemons saved the other’s human at least once. Dave’s daemon pretends that she’s more sensible than him and often would complain at Klaus’s daemon that the sexual tension was genuinely killing her and if they kept gazing into one another’s eyes on the disco floor she was gonna barf. Klaus’s daemon would just roll their eyes because it’s not like they as daemons weren’t all touchy feely. Klaus’s daemon could be constantly seen grooming Dave’s with their little cat sandpaper tongue and Dave’s daemon constantly rested her head on Klaus’s to go to sleep sO. The scene where Dave dies is doubly sad because you see her turning into dust as Klaus’s daemon howls.
Agnes: almost forgot Agnes whoops. But I choose… a canary! Why? Because they’re bright and pretty and sing nicely and she would forever be explaining that yes, her daemon is a canary but it isn’t a domestic canary so that’s why he has brown on him and isn’t pure yellow. That and I think it would be sort of cute if Hazel’s attention was caught by pretty birdsong initially so a songbird it is. Agnes’s daemon, when her and Hazel are together, likes to snuggle down into Hazel’s daemon’s fur and make a small attempt to preen her even though she’s like a million times his size. He’s absolutely fearless and doesn’t hesitate at Hazel’s large daemon like a lot of small daemons do which endears him to the assassin duo. Like genuinely I picked canary on an absolute whim but that same goes for most of these and no one can stop me.
is that everyone?? i think that’s everyone
EDIT: I FORGOT LEONARD which goes to show how much i repress his existence
Leonard: a great skua. Am I basing this on the fact that I wanted his daemon to be a bird for plot reasons and the first mean bird I could think of was that one dude who wanted to eat baby Mumble in Happy Feet? maybe. But yeah a generally normal looking bird with the capacity for great violence there we go that’s my reasoning thank you and good night. His daemon is unsettling to literally everyone except Vanya probably tbh and Vanya calls Allison out on daemon stereotyping because Allison has a SNAKE she should be BETTER THAN THAT. But yeah that’s all I got for tonight thanks for reading lads.

(January 18-February 14)
Min gă la ba! Welcome to my blog! Sorry this took so long to get up, I’ve been incredibly busy these last three weeks.
A quick note before I start: I use Myanmar (people here pronounce it “mee-an-mar”) and Myanmar language rather than Burma and Burmese because that is how people here refer to the country and language. I also don’t have a Myanmar language keyboard for my computer, so for Romanization of Myanmar script I use the system designed by Aye Su Mon.
Some background information on how the Peace Corps (PC, they really love their acronyms) works: for about three months we are in training (called Pre-Service Training or PST), then we move to our individual sites after swearing in as Volunteers. We will serve at our sites for two years, integrating into our communities, teaching English, training teachers, and working on community development projects. During PST, we learn about the Myanmar language, culture, and education system, as well as have technical training on how to teach English as a foreign language. They days are long and exhausting (all day six days a week), but I’m enjoying what i’m learning and it’s not too bad for the most part. I’m learning a lot, especially about Myanmar culture and language. We’ve all gotten used to being really tired and super busy. I can’t believe it’s been almost a month since I arrived—it feels like I’ve been here way longer.
The people of Myanmar are truly the kindest, most generous people I have ever met. Whether it’s a hot meal, a tuktuk ride, or simply being patient as we stumble through Myanmar language phrases, everyone has been unbelievably kind. Most people in Myanmar have rarely (if ever) seen a foreigner before, much less an American. Because of this, we attract a lot of attention whenever we go out into the city, which is perfectly fine, even though it does take some getting used to.
One of the highlights of being in Myanmar is the food. Myanmar food is very oily and sometimes spicy, but it tastes very good. Rice (htă miǹ, pronounced like “ta-min”) is served for three meals a day, usually with some meat (the shrimp curry is my favorite) and vegetables and tea. I think one of my favorite breakfasts so far has been mohinga, which is essentially a fish-based soup that you eat with green onions, cilantro, noodles, and chili peppers. Every region has its own version (and every region thinks theirs is the best), so there are many varieties.
Myanmar people don’t really do dessert, usually for dessert there is fruit or jaggery (palm sugar cubes). The other day, one of my PC friends taught the hotel staff how to make pancakes (they were very improvised but mostly worked, and the staff was pretty into it), so we had pancakes (of sorts, they weren’t really “pancakes” like Americans would think of them) for breakfast the next day. It was extremely exciting, there is a version of French toast here but so far no pancakes. Since we don’t have maple syrup (I’ve been told you can buy it in Yangon, but it’s super expensive), we ate our pancakes with honey and bananas.
On my days off, I have been going into Bago city with some of my PC friends and exploring the pagodas. Bago is not like an American city: there are not any skyscrapers or tall buildings, but there are plenty of motorbikes, trucks, and tuktuks rushing by. Crossing the street can be quite a challenge! There are also way more dogs and cats here than in America. So far I have been to the Shwemawdaw Pagoda and the Shwe Thalyaung Buddha (Reclining Buddha), as well as several other pagodas that I don’t know the names of (one had a massive Burmese Python in it, which was really cool). I have also been to the Kanbawza-thadi Royal Palace (Golden Palace) outside of Bago. All the pagodas are beautiful and the Kanbawza-thadi Royal Palace was breathtaking. Everything was golden and extremely ornate. I am really interested in Myanmar history, and I hope to learn more about it while I am serving here. I can do another post on pagodas later if there’s interest, I don’t want to make a long post even longer.
To help us learn about Myanmar language and culture, each of us has a sponsor family who lives in the community near where we are staying. In most countries, PCVs live with a host family during their service, but for various reasons we cannot do that in Myanmar. The sponsor family program is Peace Corps Myanmar’s adaption of the host family program: we eat dinner with our families about twice a week, and on Saturdays we spend the afternoon with them. My family and my friend Liz’s family are friends, so we spend a lot of time together. In my family (mí thà zú, pronounced “me taaa zoo”) are my ă meì (mother, pronounced “ah may”), ă phei (father, pronounced “ah pay”), ă ko (older brother), ă má (older sister), and nyi má leh (younger sister, pronounced “ni ma ley”). My family is loving and amazing, though it can be hard to communicate because they speak very limited English and I speak very limited Myanmar. I am learning so much from my family regardless, especially about Myanmar language. The other members of my group (cluster) and I have started bringing our language homework because our families always like to help us and teach us new words. My family is kind, loving, and generous; my ă má even took me to a tailor to get a longyi (traditional Myanmar wrap-around skirt worn by both men and women) and shirt made for me!
A few days ago we had our first English Club session. English Club is an opportunity for us to practice our teaching with Myanmar schoolchildren (sixth-eighth graders) in a Myanmar classroom. English Club is very different from the regular classroom because there are only about fifteen students (regular classrooms usually have up to 60 students) and it focuses on speaking. We were co-teaching with a partner (though I was in a group of three because we had an odd number) and had to plan a ninety-minute lesson. It was really cool to be in front of actual students, especially because before this I had only practiced with my cohort. The students were really smart and engaged, we actually felt that we had made the lesson too easy. It was difficult because we had never taught in front of students before, but we were able to improvise when our lesson finished early and the lesson as a whole went really well, so I consider it a win. I’m looking forward to doing it again, even though lesson planning is stressful I really enjoy teaching.
Now, you might be wondering how Peace Corps Trainees in Myanmar entertain themselves when there is limited Internet (except at this hotel, which has wifi!!!). The answer is lots and lots of cards (everything from President to Oh Hell), Uno, karaoke, group study sessions, and chiǹ louǹ (pronounced “chin loon,” but with a very soft n). I can’t really explain chiǹ louǹ except to describe how it’s played: everyone stands in a circle (barefoot) and tries to keep a special wicker ball in the air. The catch is that you can’t use your hands, so you have to hit the ball with your legs, feet, chest, or head.
The second thing you’re probably wondering about is the climate in Myanmar. Myanmar is tropical and has three seasons: hot, cold, and rainy. It’s the end of the cold season right now (hot season starts in March/April), and the average temperature is about 95 degrees Fahrenheit. In the hot season, temperatures can reach up to 116 degrees Fahrenheit, and the rainy season is, well, rainy. Not “rainy” like “Oh it’s pouring for a few days”—actual monsoons, especially in Mon State. There are lots of geckos (which are the best because they eat spiders and mosquitos), snakes (though I haven’t actually seen one in the wild), dogs, cats, chickens, cows, and other various creatures. The mosquitos can be pretty relentless, but I’ve learned to accept it and wear a lot of bug spray when I go out.

Pythons might become a new menu item in Florida if scientists can confirm they’re safe to eat
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Fee is collaborating with the Florida Division of Well being to analyze the mercury ranges in pythons to find out if they are often safely consumed. If that’s the case, the snakes could quickly find yourself on restaurant menus and dinner tables throughout the state.
Pythons are nonvenomous constrictors primarily present in south Florida the place they’ve posed a serious risk to native wildlife within the area. The snake is just not native to the state, and commenced showing within the Everglades within the Nineteen Eighties when it was doubtless launched as an escaped or launched pet.
The FWC encourages residents to take away and humanely kill pythons after they can at any time in the course of the 12 months, and to report any sightings to officers.
“It’s early on within the course of for the mercury research. We’re presently within the tissue assortment stage of the undertaking, and Covid has pushed our timeline again a bit,” wildlife fee spokeswoman Susan Neel informed CNN. “The plan is to have most of those samples come from pythons which might be caught by our contractor program.”

Tumblr media
“Mercury is a pure occurring component within the surroundings and it’s excessive within the Everglades,” Mike Kirkland, the Python Elimination Program supervisor, informed CNN. “Mercury bioaccumulates within the surroundings and you will see excessive ranges of mercury on the prime of the meals chain the place pythons have sadly positioned themselves.”
“We count on the outcomes are going to discourage the general public from consuming pythons, but when we will decide that they’re fit for human consumption, that might be very useful to regulate their inhabitants,” he stated.
Nothing like some good ol’ python jerky
When pythons are fit for human consumption, they will truly be fairly scrumptious, says Donna Kalil, one of many program’s python hunters.
Kalil is the primary feminine hunter within the python removing program, in accordance with Kirkland, and he or she has up to now captured and euthanized 473 pythons. When she catches smaller ones, about 7 ft lengthy, she makes use of a mercury testing package she purchased on-line to verify they’re fit for human consumption.
She then turns their chicken into meals. First, she makes use of a strain cooker to make the meat gentle and tender. Later, she provides pasta sauce, chili or stir fry. She additionally likes turning the snakes into jerky.
“It is actually good while you prepare dinner it proper,” Kalil informed CNN. “This is able to be a beautiful technique to get extra folks concerned with serving to us take away pythons from the surroundings. It could be a superb factor for folks to hunt and eat them however we’d like to ensure they’re secure first.”
Kalil spent her childhood catching and releasing snakes for enjoyable. Regardless of her love for pythons, which she calls “magnificent creatures,” she emphasizes the danger they pose to Florida’s wildlife and the extreme injury they’ve already brought on to its ecosystem. Giant pythons may even eat large prey, together with people.
“Now we have a extreme python downside, which started when irresponsible pet homeowners launched them into the wild they usually’ve principally eaten all of the native mammals down in Everglades Nationwide Park,” Kalil stated.
“There’s actually 2 to three% of rabbits and raccoons and possums left, so after I see a rabbit, I am leaping with pleasure now. There simply are not any extra of them due to the pythons.”

There's actually a colony of an estimated 200 Tegu infesting a part of Florida right now! Multiple people released their pets and they began to breed, and I want to know, will a Tegu in the wild eat someone's pets? Like, from what I've heard they haven't been friendly, but do my neighbors need to bring their cat inside now?
Yeah, Kaiju’s actually one of them! (Well, she’s not now. Now she lives in an apartment and expects her food to be hand-delivered.) She’s from the Homestead colony. But! That wasn’t your question!
Your question was “will a wild ‘gu eat someone’s pets,” and the answer is no. Tegus aren’t like snakes. An adult Burmese python could eat someone’s pet- they can eat prey larger than their head, after all- but tegus don’t have the jaws that sling forward and the expando-chin. Most fully grown tegus struggle consuming fully-grown r.ats;  your average housecat’s going to be way too big for them. Adult also aren’t exactly apex hunters. They’ll eat things they come across in the wild, of course- but they’re much better scavengers than they are hunters. The prey they actually take is usually insects, mollusks, small injured things, rodents- you get the gist, yeah? Nothing as big and as talented at defending itself as a cat. They’ll wreak absolute havoc on wildlife, especially bird populations- but not because they can catch a bird, but because they LOVE eggs. And frogs. Lordy do they love frogs- that makes up the bulk of their diet in some wild populations.
Now, a tegu might fight with your cat or dog, but they’re not going to eat them. An adult tegu can do a LOT of damage when it feels threatened and could seriously hurt or kill a smaller dog or a cat, but they don’t really pose much of a threat to domesticated animals. (Except for chickens. Tegus are notorious for raiding chicken nests, so much so that many chicken farmers in their native areas stopped keeping chickens and switched to farming tegus because the lizards were such a pain in the neck.)
Hope that answers your question!
