A wildcat strike is a strike taken by union workers without approval or union leadership.

Toutefois les entretiens que les délégués de la loge 712 de l'Union internationale des machinistes, section de l'avionnerie, ont eus hier à Ottawa ne semblent pas avoir eu de résultats satisfaisants et nous apprenons "qu'aucune concession n'au- rait été consentie par le ministère du travail ou par tout autre représentant fédéral pour le retour des grévistes au travail".

On sait que les trois avionneries sont fermées sur l'ordre des hon. C.- D. Howe, ministre des munitions et approvisionnements, et Humphrey Mitchell, ministre du travail. Les grévistes réclament des arrérages du boni de vie chère.

Entretiens avec les députés demain Les représentants des grévistes auront un entretien avec les députés fédéraux et provinciaux de l'ile de Montréal à 1 h., demain après-midi. apprend-on aux quartiers généraux de la loge 712. Cette conférence a pour but de trouver le moyen d'en arriver à une entente. Il se peut, nous dit-on, que les chefs de la loge et les députés aient ensuite une entrevue avec le premier ministre du Canada, le Tres Hon. M. King.

Les entretiens de MM. Robert Haddow et D. S. Lyons, respectivement représentant canadien et vice-président de l'union internationale des machinistes, avec les chefs du Congrès des métiers du Canada et des officiels du gouvernement fédéral, ne semblent pas avoir donné de résultat à date.

On n'a aucune nouvelle également de l'entretien que la Fédération provinciale du travail devait avoir hier avec le premier ministre de la province, l'hon. Adélard Godbout, pour lui demander son intervention personnelle dans le différend de l'avionnerie. Les chefs de la fédération reviendront aujourd'hui dans la métropole.

Réunion, hier soir Des milliers de grévistes se sont réunis, hier soir, à l'Auditorium Hall, pour entendre le rapport de leurs délégués à Ottawa, mais on n'a rien annoncé. MM. Sarto Fournier, dé- puté de Maisonneuve-Rosemont aux Communes, Emile Boucher, député de S.-Henri, à Québec, ont toutefois adressé la parole aux grévistes. Bien que M. Fred Rose, nouveau député fédéral de Cartier, n'ait pas été invité à la réunion, mais il a adressé la parole aux grévistes. Il les a encouragés à réclamer leur boni rétroactif.

La réunion d'hier soir était sous les auspices du Conseil des métiers et du travail dont le président est M, Paul Fournier.

M. Rose a déclaré que "le peuple est fatigué de la politique de MM. Howe et Mitchell".

Il a de plus sévèrement blâmé les autorités fédérales, le parti libéral et l'Association des manufacturiers et les accuses d'avoir retardé le reglement de la grève.

il y aura ce soir une autre réunion au cours de laquelle des rapports sur les entretiens d'Ottawa et de Québec seront donnés.

I want to be clear that I am NOT an expert in trade unions: My experience is limited to the IBEW and I’ve only been a member for four years. That being said:

My experience thus far is that 99% of being in one is the same obnoxious bureaucratic bullshit as national politics on a smaller scale. Everyone loves to bitch about the administration: It’s corrupt, they’re just giving themselves raises for doing nothing, the business manager is doing his “recruiting” exclusively in the bar, the negotiators are licking the contractors’ boots, we inexplicably voted to give the golf club ten thousand fucking dollars, they don’t actually care about us, they’re just sitting on their asses doing politics while we work to support them. And then you ask “so are you going to meetings and voting?” and the answer is always “hell no, I’m not giving up an evening a month to go listen to a bunch of bullshit”.

Obviously I 100% support forming and joining unions, they offer way more protection and support than non-union workplaces, and they’re a powerful force for labor rights. Just . . . remember they’re just made up of all of your coworkers, including the ones you hate, and they require the involvement of the membership to actually function. It’s a lot of compromising and politicking and bullshitting, it’s not a magic bullet to fix labor problems. Half the time I can’t even agree with my coworkers on what the problems ARE, much less how to fix them!

i wanna say just for clarity's sake that, during the length of the SAG and WGA strike, since promotion is considered crossing the picket line and there are grey lines around online content like cosplay as promotion and scabbing (according to SAG's own statements, promo for any properties that are being struck/would have been struck if released today is to be avoided, even in cosplay), i'm not gonna be making any fan content of any struck properties, nor will i be reblogging it. i'll go back to reblogging stuff for struck shows and movies and such when the strike is over, but until then stuff will be staying in my drafts. solidarity forever!

Lions Led by Donkeys put out an episode discussing this, but the soldiers doing this were the equivalent of American GIs in Vietnam refusing to shoot first: They were doing exactly what their commanders didn't want them to do. Many of the soldiers in 1914 negotiated informal ceasefires with soldiers on the other side against direct orders from their officers. Both allied and axis governments attempted to bury the heartwarming Christmas Truce story, and when it leaked via neutral countries' press, British High Command deemed such actions "fraternization with the enemy" and warned that any soldier caught chatting up Jerry, at Christmas or otherwise, would be court martialed and, if found guilty, executed.

Humanizing the enemy is bad for morale, and generals already knew the western front was going to be a long, slow war of attrition.

Management always sees workers bonding with each other as a threat, and they're right. :)

not sure how the use of the term wildcat strike got so misplayed but I suspect it has to do with it sounding extremely cool

#ftr it's supposed to refer to action taken by membership without leadership approval #but has come to be used to describe illegal strikes (already sounds cool tho) and any spontaneous action #it's really not a wildcat bc cupe is literally in a strike position if not for the legislation AND leadership is... leading
