Practical tip for those dealing with wildfire smoke now: you can make a very effective air filter for a reasonable amount of money using a box fan & one of those filters meant for your furnace.

Also, I've managed to pick up 2 of the box fans for very cheap/free from yard sales. Make sure you get a filter rated for wildfire smoke, I think this one cost about $20.
These make a huge difference in the indoor air quality.

For any Canadian/East Coast peeps please remember to wear masks outside!! This air quality is WORSE than when Fort McMurray burned!!
Keep an eye on your children and grandparents and pets! They’re all especially prone to smoke inhalation!
If you get any nosebleeds you can put a tiny bit of petroleum jelly in your nose to keep things from drying out, and lip balm is a good idea too. Sunglasses won’t save your eyes completely but they do help if you have to go outside!
Any yard work or exercise can WAIT. Going for a run WILL hurt you. If your house is too smoky, turn on your air conditioning (if you have it) and go to a shopping centre for the day. I think they opened the cooling centres in Ottawa which is apparently getting hit super hard so you can also head there to get a break!
Please please be careful out there folks!

some friendly advice as new areas of the country start having long-term wildfire smoke problems:
Don’t do extended exercise outside. If possible, don’t do extended work outside.
Shower once you’re back inside to wash the particles off your skin/hair. This helps to keep you from inhaling it when out of the smoke.
Hot showers and steam help sooth inflammatory airways (nose/throat)
Wear an N95 mask when outside for extended periods to help keep from inhaling smoke. Look at what size particles and how much the mask will protect against (ie 95% vs 99%).
Get an air filter for your office/room/house. They’re in the $50 range online (price May vary in person). If you can’t get one, look into how to make a Corsi-Rosenthal box (box fan, two air filter frames and lots of duct tape).
If you have an A/C (window or central air), turn the fan from “auto” to “on”. This will make sure your air is still being filtered even when the cooling part of the system is not on.
Drink water. (I mean you should try to do this anyways)
Important to note: you may feel side effects slower than others. You may feel them quicker than others. Sore throat, sinus infection, upper respiratory infection, itchy eyes, pink eye, exhaustion, difficulty breathing— these are all common side effects of prolonged smoke exposure.
The dangerous part is that in areas of high concentration, the particles are small enough to be absorbed into your bloodstream. So please, do what you can to help protect yourself and friends/family. Even when you aren’t feeling it, it’s affecting you.

if anyone is looking for something to make their air a little more breathable and has the money for things, here are the tools i wish i’d had before wildfire smoke ruined my lungs:
You want a mask. Respro remains my go-to. Note that this is the specific type of filter you want for whatever mask shell you purchase—charcoal filter + hepa.
Why HEPA? Because you want things rated PM2.5 (that’s rated for particulate matter 2.5 microns or less in diameter. That’s small enough to get into your bloodstream after you inhale it and cause the kind of damage that gave me, a person with no family history of asthma, absolutely shitty asthma and chronic pain on top of it.
Any amount of work you’ll be doing outside? Wear a mask. Wear a mask, wear a mask, wear a mask. I don’t know if KN-95s for viruses will work as well for smoke as things like a respro, but if it’s what you’ve got, wear it, because that’s better than nothing.
You might also be able to find PM2.5-rated masks at hardware stores, in the US.
You want the Coway Airmega AP-1512HH Mighty. Packs a hell of a punch cleaning up your air. Keep it in whatever room of your house you happen to be in, but especially the room you sleep in. Sleeping in smoke will fuck you up, and irritated lungs will keep you from sleeping, which will make everything worse and less comfortable, which is a vicious cycle.
Always have to mention Corsi-Rosenthal boxes. They’re basically DIY HEPA filters. While they often cost less than manufactured air filters like the Coway, the cost of the RIGHT materials is in total not a ton less expensive than the Coway (although it still was less expensive last I checked) and the Coway allows you to clean, maintain, change filters w/o building a new one etc. However, CR boxes are verified to work against viruses and smoke and have caught on in a big way as DIY air filtration to protect yourself from covid:
In all, the key words are “HEPA” and “PM2.5”
