A bumblebee sits on a poppy in a wildflower meadow at King’s College, Cambridge. A study by the college shows that establishing the meadow has made a considerable impact to the wildlife value of the land while reducing the greenhouse gas emissions associated with its upkeep. It found that the wildflower meadow supported three times as many species of plants, spiders and bugs, including 14 species with conservation designations. Bat activity over the meadow was three times higher than over the remaining lawn

Viper’s bugloss is a weirdass name for a wildflower. This spiky, harsh plant grows in dry, inhospitable areas and . . I love it so much. The flowers are such an intense blue; if you see it at dusk in the ‘blue hour’ it almost glows.

Also, down in the creek bottom, this unmowed patch is winding up for a massive late-summer wildflower display.

The plants are about a meter tall most places, and would be quite difficult to walk any distance through. Lady likes going in and sniffing around; she disappears entirely but I can see the weeds shaking as she plows her way through. There Could Be A Rodent! (so she tells me) Less of interest to dogs, but moreso to me; there are an awful LOT of interesting bugs and butterflies in there. Dogbane beetles are glorious!

The Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) is a wildflower found all over Eurasia and North America. This plant attracts pollinators as well as hoverflies, whose larvae feed off insect pests like aphids.

The leaves and flowers have a plethora of uses in herbal medicine in both European and Native American traditions, but surprisingly these claims are not well supported by medical research. The most famous use is to help heal wounds and there are some medical studies suggesting the crushed herb does have antibacterial properties.

In these modern times it’s definitely safer to use sterile dressings and topical antibiotic creams on wounds, but our ancestors used yarrow since their options were limited.

Scouse Flowerhouse, Sefton Park. Meadows. Lomo LC-A+

Scouse Flowerhouse are an organisation who claim to create a "joyous celebration of flowers and creative ecology." They have sowed wildflower meadows in various locations around the city including Croxteth Park, The Anglican Cathedral and Albion Street.

Earlier this year volunteers from local schools where enlisted to sow wildflower seeds in Sefton Park Meadows.
