Lucia Appreciation Post

I wasn't in the fandom when S1 came out so hopefully this isn't something that everyone has already rehashed to death, but! I want to give some love, and my own interpretation to the S1 Lucia scene.

First of all, I know we can all agree that it is a thing of pure beauty artistically! But beyond that it's such a great scene because of how it shows a very critical moment in Simon and Wille's relationship:

We know that Simon is a caring person. This is one of his core characterizations that comes into play over and over again throughout the series (eg taking on the role of protector to Sara; playing peacemaker for his mother and Sara when they are not understanding each other well, and then working hard to make sure Sara keeps in touch with their mother while she's living at Hillerska; giving Wille 2nd, 3rd, 4th chances after he gets skittish and pulls away in S1, then not allowing Wille to believe he and Marcus are dating because it will make Wille sad. The list goes on!). Seeing someone he cares about hurting or needing help is something that Simon cannot turn his back on, he truly believes in giving people chances to grow.

So, as the scene starts there is a big conflict happening within Simon, and you can see it clearly in the amazing acting by Omar. When they walk into the classroom, he has already calmed down significantly from the anger he was previously feeling- now that he knows that he's not going to get expelled - but he's still upset. He's not shouting or defensive anymore like he was in the music room, he's listening, but still skeptical of Wille's intentions. He maintains a physical separation between them that shows clearly that all is not forgiven yet.

Wille has really hurt him here by allowing Simon to be put into a position where he might be expelled. Where the rich kids would get away with it while the outsider feels all the consequences. More importantly, Wille showed Simon that he didn't understand or anticipate how upsetting that would be for him during their argument in the music room.

But now Wille responds with honesty and sincerity. He doesn't try to beg, plead or excuse his actions, or worse - try and convince Simon that it wasn't a big deal, minimizing his feelings.

And you can see how much that resonates with Simon here. You can see his defensiveness melt away, leaving him feeling a little lost on how to proceed. Does he just forgive Wille right way? Is it enough? Is this relationship even worth it if this is the kind of B.S. he's going to be exposed to around Wille?

But Wille continues. He opens up and makes himself vulnerable to Simon, revealing how important Simon and their relationship are to him.

He tears up, showing just how scared he is of losing Simon. And Simon, who is a caregiver at heart, can't help but respond to that.

(Me too fr, let's have a brief moment of admiration for Edvin's acting and unreal kicked puppy eyes!)

This following moment right here is so important!! The emotional climax of the scene in my opinion.

You can see it in Simon's eyes, the exact moment when he gives in - when he realizes that his feelings for Wille and his need to comfort Wille overpower his own feelings of hurt and frustration.

But it's not an easy decision for him - he looks almost pained, like he has fought a battle with himself and lost. Like maybe he had no choice at all, this was only going to end one way....

He pulls Wille into an embrace, and it's forgiveness, emotional release, and relief that this is not the end of them. Relief mixed with a very strong feeling on both their parts that their relationship has taken on a new dimension.

Before, they had admitted to liking each other, but their relationship was limited to lighthearted (and sexy) hookups, teasing, and generally enjoying each other's company. The honeymoon phase.

But this is the first time their relationship has been affected by external influences outside their control. It's been put to the test, and although they choose to overcome it together, it leaves them shaken.

Wille gets his first taste of reality - that Simon comes from a different world and does not see things from the same perspective, nor will he put their relationship above his family or his morals (ok yeaaa it's going to take a few more lessons for this one to fully sink in, but I said first taste!). Simon is not a sure thing.

And Simon realizes that being with Wille is not all fun and games, but it's something he wants anyways.

This conflict is unpleasant and jarring for them, but ultimately leads to a better understanding of one another, and new depth in their relationship.

They end this scene with a kiss that is pure comfort. Wille, who craves touch from Simon when he needs reassurance of closeness, goes in for one quick kiss before he pulls back slightly, and they just breathe each other in, Simon lightly stroking Wille's hair and cheek. We very much get the sense that there is an intensity between them that wasn't there before.

This scene was necessary to have before their video was leaked and everything went to hell. I don't know that Simon would have been so certain about sticking it out with Wille, or that Wille would have tried defying his mother for Simon if they hadn't gotten this taste of being apart first, cementing their desire for this relationship.

Because Simon is a very good, caring person, yes. But - he's not a bleeding heart who will stick their neck out for just anyone (for example, he doesn't exactly seem bothered that Alexander's going to be thrown under the bus instead of himself). He's the kind of person who generally prefers to mind their own business unless he or a loved one is involved.

I think that this scene is the first time Simon consciously realizes that he's in a bit over his head with Wille, that the depth of his feelings for him far surpasses what he had believed. Because Wille is now one of those people whose needs Simon will put before his own. He has become a loved one.

Headcanon N°1: Okey listen to me, I need a parallel of the lake scene from s1 ep5. But this time Simon and Wille walk through the branches and trees hand in hand. And also Wille (or Simon) interrupts the walk to kiss but this time it's longer (but still very tender). When they are in front of the lake they also have a silly conversation, playing with the water or something. And this time Simon won't have to say: "If they weren't here, would you throw yourself into my arms..." (well in Spanish it was translated like this). Since Wille would already be hugging him. Headcanon 2: I also need an episode of Wille going to Simon's house, where he will obviously meet Linda and he will be very embarrassed about what happened so in a very shy way he would apologize to Linda but she would hug him and tell him: That what he did (confessing in front of everyone) was very brave of him and that he should be very proud of that. I feel that Wille would hug her tightly because he was so afraid that Linda would hate him and also he so needed to hear those words. Then have them move on to Simon's piece and there Wille would greet the fish by their names. And that Simon would be surprised and excited (?) realizing that it was worth it to go back to Wille because of the beautiful memories they had in the fish scene. Headcanon 3 : I would also like it to be Wille's birthday and obviously it would be a super important event because it's the crown prince's birthday. Simon has a gift for him can it be made by him or something and that really for his financial situation would have been arduous to buy (I don't know that he worked or saved for it) and I would love it to be a snow globe (same or another special one) or something frog related. And that I have planned a little surprise for the two of them.

.but that everyone in Hillerska would give him super expensive gifts and plan a massive party, so Simon would be intimidated and embarrassed about his gift because it's not ostentatious like everything they gave Wille so he would struggle to give it or get to a point where he doesn't want to give it but Wille finds out and encourages him to do so. And when he gives it to him Wille can't handle the emotion and love for the gift given by Simon. So he hugs or kisses him and tells him it's the best gift he's ever been given.

Yet another appreciation post for YR anxiety depiction and general excellent storytelling

This fandom has talked a lot about Edvin’s amazing portrayal of anxiety throughout the series, and for good reason! It’s simply *chef’s kiss*. 

In a recent interview (I think it was the Reign podcast) Edvin discusses how that portrayal has evolved intentionally along with the changing circumstances in Wilhelm’s life -  in the beginning it was very outwardly manifested, with compulsive nail biting, fidgeting hands, chest pains and shortness of breath. 

In season two, however, Wilhelm has - at least outwardly - transformed himself into a more princely image with his shorter hair. This is presumably to appease his family and the royal court as he is expected to take on the mantle of crown prince. Accordingly, he stops biting his nails/picking at his thumbs, and has gotten slightly better at controlling his emotions in public (privately we all know it’s a different story lol). Now he has the more subtle habit of picking his inner lip with his teeth (again, shoutout to Edvin/YR team for the great acting and character building, I do all of these things too yay anxiety!). I just love the thought that went into every detail of this show. 

Now! Edvin mentioned something else interesting in that interview. Wilhelm’s anxiety issues are a long-term problem that he has had to deal with since long before the show picks up, related to the pressures that come with being royalty. Maybe for his whole life, but at least since he was confirmed as prince at age 15. What I love about this, is that there is never anything explicitly mentioned about this in the show, and yet it’s shown in the story so well. 

Right from the first episode of season 1, we see Wilhelm dealing with the aftermath/fallout of this drunken club confrontation. He is biting his thumb in the car as he’s being driven away, and we can see immediately that he is overwhelmed and anxious about the situation. In the following scene where he is arguing with his mother about getting sent to boarding school, he does it again - again, upset and angry about having no choice due to his status as a prince. 

Immediately Kristina notices and smacks his hand away. The way she does it without hesitating, and the completely perfect, mutinous expression on Wilhelm's face afterwards so clearly communicates to the audience that this is a frequent battle between the two of them.

And just with that 5 second moment, we the audience suddenly knows quite a bit not only about Wilhelm (that he suffers from long-term anxiety, feels stifled and controlled by the crow), but about his relationship with his mother (she loves him but puts the monarchy first above all else. She seems to have interpreted this habit of his as a just that - a bad habit, instead of recognizing it as a symptom of anxiety and getting him the help/support he needed to deal with it earlier. He loves her but it's complicated).

I really love the relationship between Wille and his mother and how in unfolds in the show. I know many aren't Kristina's biggest fans for good reason, but I think that she is a more nuanced character than people give her credit for, and Wille actually has a pretty sweet relationship with her when you boil it down. Anyways that's a post for a different time!

I need to rant, I need to rant, I need to raaaaaaaaant!!!

What a fucking fantastic season. What a fucking incredible finale. Oh my god, that was so genious. So perfect. Because it left so many things unaswered (obviously for a next season), but at the same time, the entire game just changed. I’m so proud of both Wille and Simon for how much they changed and how they decided to deal with the situation at the end. I’m so fucking happy about how the writters chose to really show how many bad choices people can make, even if they’re not bad people. I love three dimensional characters, that make mistakes and all that. Simon’s story with Marcus was amazing, and so raw and real, I’ve known so many people that have been through that same situation. And I loved how they chose to not make Marcus forgive Simon, cause he shouldn’t. Sarah’s arc was also good, it made me hate the character, but I kind of understood all she went through, and even if we hate her for all the shit she did, I feel like they left a lot of room for her to grow now in a next season. August was so brilliant as a vilan as well, cause he starts in deep shit, and we think he’s finally gonna change, maybe there’s a redemption arc comming and all that, but the second he gets a glimps of power back into his hands he goes right back into being a dispicable person, and that’s exactly what we like about him! 

Wille going through his anxiety and all, and watching him starting to figure out that there’s something wrong and he needs help broke my heart into a thousand pieces, but watching his therapist at the end, all proud of him while he made that speech was sensational. And there was finally a click inside his head about how selfish and fear induced all his decisions were, and with that fucking SPECTACULAR ending, that just cimmented that he doesn’t wanna do that anymore. He finally took control of his own life. Of course, I expect a lot of shit comming next after he did that, the queen will not be happy, and the entire monarchy will colapse, for sure. But probably now, after Sarah calls the cops, and August is fucked, they’re gonna have a lot of issues finding a perfect prince, so I have no idea what’s gonna happen, but holy shit I want more. 

Simon too. I loved his whole thing with Marcus, and him trying so hard to forget Wille, cause he knew Wille wasn’t good for him, and figuring out that even with a perfect guy by his side (I fucking loved Marcus) he still loves who he loves, and he can’t stay away from Wille. A little problematci? Yes, but we fcking love it. And I honestly relate so much to Simon, he’s forever my favorite character. 

Felice was brilliant, we love her inconditionally, can’t wait to see more of her. Also love the lesbian romance blossoming. Nills comming out was, unexpected, but welcomed. Ayub and Rosh are still the best friends anybody can have. I don’t know I just loved every second of this season, and I love Young Royals so much, and I can’t wait to wait another year to get season 3.
