I’ve been rewatching Stark Trek: The Original Show and Strange New Worlds, and every time I see Kirk, I am reminded of my encounter with the both of them. 

Little known fact - there is a real life Captain James Kirk in the USN, and he and I don’t get along. 

Well...that’s not fair. 

I like him. He does not like me. 

I got to explain this to several people at Willaim Shatner’s tour of the real USN ship Enterprise when it was being decommed because I needed him to sign a very specific phrase on a picture of Captain James T. Kirk. 

My ship was parked right next to the Enterprise, and I was standing officers’ security watch, which meant I got to stand and check the ID’s for everyone E-7 and above when they came onboard the boat. Security would regularly run drills and give people at the pier fake ID’s to see if they could trip us up for not paying attention to the ID’s we were checking, and this poor fuck had the unfortunate luck of running into me with the actual, real life name of Captain James Kirk. Captains on a whole are pretentious dicks, I was not the greatest at being enlisted, and it was 5AM on a Saturday and I was already cranky. The conversation went something along the lines of: 

“Captain Kirk? James Kirk? Yeah, you’re on the wrong boat. Enterprise is next door.”

::long suffering sigh:: “It’s my real name, shipmate [derogatory].”

“Sure. And I’m an actual [insert religious figure that shares my last name]. Nice try.”

“It’s my real name, and I outrank you!”

“I buy that you outrank me sir, but I’m not standing an extra watch because you spun some good bullshit and got me to let you on with a fake ID.”

“IT’S A REAL ID!”

“They actually went the whole nine yards and made a real fake ID for you? That’s impressive.”

I detained that man for so long our actual captain had to come down and vouch for him, and I made him sign the log himself to prove that he’d vouched for Fake Captain Kirk. 

Several weeks later, Shatner came to town for the decommissioning ceremony for the Enterprise and they got several of us from security to stand as guards during the ceremony, which I volunteered for with an enthusiasm that concerned my watch commander, but she decided to see how it panned out and let me. After the Fancy Stuff was over, Shatner and a couple of the other Actual Navy people were milling around, I asked Shatner if he’d be willing to sign a picture for me. 

At first, he wasn’t thrilled, and started to decline, but I suggested he take a look at the picture I wanted him to sign before he said no. 

I handed him the photo and told him the story of the Actual Captain Kirk that I’d been a dick to earlier, and the message I wanted him to write. 

I thought Shatner was going to die laughing, and he immediately signed it, exactly as I asked and told me to have a good day. 

The next time Captain James Kirk showed up on my boat, I handed him the picture, and said it was an apology gift. Rightfully suspicious, he unfolded the picture, looked at it, and cursed me to the depths as he gave me a one finger salute and let himself on the boat. 

The picture? 

A badly photoshopped picture of CVN 65 USS Enterprise with William Shatner in his Star Trek days signed by the man himself: “To Captain Kirk from the Real Captain Kirk”. 

I am a comedic genius, and it should be known.
