Norman Lindsay - The Weird Lady, 1896; Jessica Casltes Her Book, pen and ink Norman Alfred Williams Lindsay (1879 – 1969) was a versatile and prolific Australian artist, working as a painter, cartoonist, illustrator, etcher, sculptor and author. Lindsay was masterful with his drawing and painting technique, but his talent was often overshadowed by the controversy created by his works depicting paganism, eroticism, and attacking society's attitudes and morals. Lindsay was born in Creswick, Victoria and moved with his family to Melbourne. He tried attending drawing classes at the National Gallery School but quit after a few months. He began drawing for newspapers and worked as a ghost illustrator for his brother Lionel. Norman later attended life drawing classes and Lionel taught him how to etch. Norman focused on light and colour as he developed proficiency in watercolour and oils. Lindsay moved to New South Wales in 1901 where he worked for many years as the chief cartoonist for the Sydney Bulletin, his works often commenting on politics and society. His first novel was published in 1913. Lindsay became the highest paid Australian artist of is time.

"Give me a specific site and I can tell you everything about it"
That Dover castle you mentioned sounds interesting if you have anything else on it :)c
dover caslte- kent's biggest sexiest lady
Tumblr media
like i said before, there's remains of an iron age hillfort, a roman lighthouse, and an anglo saxon church, so dover has been a significant site for several thousand years
when william the conqueror invaded and took over britain, he built the first castle there, though none of it now remains. the main keep, the central square structure, was built in the 12th century but Henry II. at the time, dover was the most impressive castle (for multiple reasons, but partially bc dover sits on the narrowest crossing between britain and france, meaning it's the place most people are going to land. another major reason was that this was one of the stops on the new pilgrimage route to becket's shrine in canterbury)
it got expanded and developed over the years, with bits being built and remodelled. the last time royalty used it was in 1625, by charles i's wife. it was later used as a prison for soldiers in the nine years war and the spanish war of succession (you can still see graffiti from this!!)
it got remodelled back into a defensive fort in the 18th century, with barracks to fit a ridiculous number of men, with room for 800 infantrymen (people were very worried about napoleon). a lot of these barracks were underground!
speaking of the tunnels!!! the world wars happened!!
dover was home to 16,000 men during the first world war, and in the second, the tunnels under the castle were expanded and turned into bunkers and headquarters for the army and the navy. these bunkers are where the plans for the evacuation of allied forces from dunkirk took place.
after wwii, dovers job still wasn't done. the newer tunnels under the castle were refitted into nuclear bunkers, complete with cafeterias, dormitories, air filtration systems, and broadcasting equipment. it wasn't decommissioned until the 1980s.
dover has been in nearly constant use as a site of extreme importance and defence for several thousand years. it's the biggest castle in britain (technically windsor might be bigger, but also shush, dover is my special little baby and i love it, the curtain wall is a mile long)
tldr: dover castle is kent's biggest sexiest, and also potentially oldest lady

Neidpath Castle
Tumblr media
http://www.marie-stuart.co.uk/Castles/Neidpath.htm
Date: Built in the 14th century and became haunted in 1587
History: The Neidpath castle has a long history of being bought and sold. It had origninally been a castle belonging to the Fraser family until it was torn down and replaced. The new caslte (Neidpath Castle) was built by by Sir William de Haya, Sheriff of Peebles in the 14th century, and was owned by the Hays until 1688, before being sold to the Duke of Queensberry, who later gave it to his son, the Earl of March.
Hauntings: The castle has had a long line of residents but one in particular, is the reason that it is haunted. This is the ghost of the youngest daughter of Sir William Douglas, Earl of Marchghost. Her name was Jean. She fell in love with a Scott of Tushielaw, but she was not allowed to marry him because he was the son of a poor landowner and when they were found out, he was banished. Jean refused to marry any other man and she fell into a deep depression. She became pale, thin, and sickly over the years due to this. When her lover finally came back, he didn’t recognize her at all and she died on the spot because it was too much for her to handle. It is said that the ghost of Jean never left the castle and she is seen wandering around in a full-length brown frock with a large white collar. People who stay there overnight claim to hear the voice of a girl crying and calling out her lovers name, doors opening and slamming, and objects flying across the room.
