imagine you are andy roddick. it’s 2003. you’re being held up as the next big thing from your country. you make it to the semifinals of wimbledon, but this swiss guy who’s beaten you a few times beats you in straight sets and wins the title. okay. fine. time to turn this h2h around. you beat him a few weeks later en route to a title in canada. then you win cincinnati. you’re on fire, and guess what’s right around the corner…
and you do it. you win the fucking us open. you’re a grand slam champion on home soil. you’re on top of the world, and nothing can stop you
the increasingly annoying swiss man beats you at the world tour finals, but you end the year as number one anyways
it’s 2004. things are going great. you’re playing some of your best tennis, and you end up in the wimbledon final! but who is your opponent? it’s the swiss man at his best tournament. you’re both at the top of your game, but your ceiling is a mere house and his is a skyscraper
remember last year when you got revenge and beat him in canada? yeah that’s not happening again. the final isn’t even 90 minutes long when he destroys you
but you’re still one of the best players in the world, and you make the wimbledon final AGAIN in 2005. back to back finals at the most prestigious tennis tournament in the world. but guess who else made back to back finals: the swiss bane of your existence. you can’t even stretch it out to two hours
instead of meeting in canada this year, you go head to head in a cincinnati final that you would probably rather forget
your streak of wimbledon finals comes to an end in 2006, but at the end of the year you find yourself back in the us open final. the slam you’ve won before with your home crowd, surely this is the time to win your second major. but no, because your opponent is this fucking swiss man who you are close to literally murdering. it doesn’t matter how competitive you make the match, he wins
he beats you at the tour finals again, just to rub it in
2007. you’re overdue for grand slam success, right? wrong! not only does he beat you in the semifinals of the australian open, you, one of the best servers on tour, gets bageled. and if that isn’t bad enough, you get stuck playing him in the quarterfinals of the us open because you’re slipping down the rankings. to add to the humiliation, it only takes him an hour to beat you in the tour finals again
but then. then. miami 2008. beautiful sunny miami, and you are playing your swiss nemesis in the quarterfinals. it’s long and tough and gritty but you stick it out and you win. finally, for the first time in five years, you have beaten him
a sign for good things to come? no, because 2009 is a fucking nightmare
australian open semifinals? he destroys you again. madrid quarterfinals? you get breadsticked. and then, your third wimbledon final. the third time has to be the charm. there’s no way someone as great as you can go his entire career without winning wimbledon
five sets. four hours. you give your everything but in the end you’re the one holding the plate and he’s the one with the trophy. it's not enough, it will never be enough
you’re done with grand slam finals now. you’re done being world #1. it’s over, and it has always been over because he has been blocking your path at every turn
in 2012, as you’re knocking on the door of retirement, you play him in an early round of miami. little do you know, this is the last match you will ever play against the swiss of your nightmares
and you win
after all that, you beat him in the last match
now isn’t that something

Since playing his first major at Wimbledon 2003, Rafa has missed 15 majors:
Roland Garros 2004
Wimbledon 2004
Australian Open 2006
Wimbledon 2009
US Open 2012
Australian Open 2013
US Open 2014
Wimbledon 2016
US Open 2020
Wimbledon 2021
US Open 2021
Roland Garros 2023
Wimbledon 2023
US Open 2023
Australian Open 2024
The longest streak of continuous play he’s had was USO 2016-AO 2020. That’s 14 majors. USO 2020 was the only time he missed a major without being injured/sick (he didn’t want to travel to the US because of COVID and RG was held after USO). This is the first time he’s missed all 4 in a row.
This is also the first Australian Open in 25 years that neither Rafa or Fed will play 😢

A rivalry is more than head to heads or titles won. Here's a thread of why the Federer-Nadal rivalry (2004-2022) is considered one of the greatests and most unique in sports history:
Tumblr media
Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are mirror opponents. A once in a century jackpot with two style of play at the opposite ends of the sports' techniques. In terms of athlete's posture, they are eerily of the exact same height and weight, yet Federer is a right-handed player with a one-handed backhand and Nadal is a left-handed player with a two-handed backhand. Federer portrayed the elegant, fast-paced serve and volley style of the past decade whereas Nadal introduced innovative heavy groundstrokes, topspin, and defensive baseline plays. They encapsulated the progress of the sports' development and their matches popularised tennis to unprecedented heights.
Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are the respective best at their dominant surfaces. They both stil hold world records for most Grand Slam titles on grass (Federer with 8 Wimbledons) and on clay (Nadal with 14 French Opens), respectively dubbed King of Grass and King of Clay. From 2006 to 2008, they played every single Wimbledon and French Open finals against each other.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Roger Federer was the undisputed current world number one since 2004. He admitted he almost lost his passion for the game due to lack of competition until Nadal became the first to beat him in a grand slam final. They became the only pair in history to share the top two year end rankings for 6 years, from 2005 to 2010 and 2017. In their own words, they were each other's biggest motivations to achieve greatness.
Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal were the first to dominate the sports consistently for over a decade, ending the era of one or two odd times Grand Slam winners. Together they won consecutive majors from 2005 to 2007, 2008 to 2009, and 2017 to 2018. Their dominance kickstarted what was dubbed the 'golden era of tennis'.
As tournament seedings are based on rankings, their 40 matches were tournament quarters, semis, and finals, with the all time record of 9 Grand Slam finals. They were each other's partners in the worst and best moments of their careers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They played what is considered by most tennis analysts as the greatest tennis match in history: The Wimbledon final of 2008 for 4 hours and 48 minutes.
Tumblr media
They were leaders of the game from the background, being president and vice president of the players' council for more than 10 years with both only agreeing to join if the other's participating.
They have played countless charity matches to support each other's foundations. In 2020 they broke the world record together, with their exhibition in Africa attracting the highest ever attendance in a tennis match.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Known for their sportmanships, Nadal has openly expressed that he cried of happiness when Federer won his first ever French Open (Nadal's best tournament), whilst Federer expressed his wish to have a draw match and shared his 2017 Australian Open with Nadal.
Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are two of the most successful, consistent, and longstanding tennis players of all time, playing more than 25 years of professional tennis with a record of 42 Grand Slams between them. Many have not known the sport without them, they are representative of a generation.
Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal remain close friends after almost 20 years of facing each other on court, having stated their friendship as the proudest milestone of their rivalry. As per his personal wish, Federer will retire playing doubles alongside Nadal in his last ever competitive tennis match.

OHH that was a magnificent RG final! I love Iga a lot but I also do love rooting for the underdog you know? I was there in 2004 in Wimbledon.. I saw 17 yo Sharapova rising from prospect to champion in the span of 2 weeks. I saw her beat everyone including Serena to lift that trophy. That was some magic there, that was some pure magic I swear. A teenage girl upsetting everyone! When she overcame Lindsay Davenport in the semis I knew it in my heart that something huge was going to happen. She played like she had nothing to lose and she did it. She fucking did it. After that I was following Masha every step of the way, cheering her on even in the most difficult of times. She was my girl. Ever since she’s retired I couldn’t root for anyone with all my heart even though Iga has become a favorite of mine very quickly. Until now. Muchova made me rise from my seat during that semi, made me feel some kinda way similar to when I did while watching Maria. So yeah she’s my girl now, WE MOVE KAROLINA! Can’t wait for grass season 😁
Anyways, PAZZA INTER AMALA 📢📢📢📢
awwww yeah muchova played so well!! It was such a good final and I can’t wait to see what she does next

Happy Birthday Scottish tennis player and three time grand slam tournament winner Andy Murray.
Born in Glasgow on May 15, 1987, to Judy and William Murray, Andrew Barron Murray grew up in Dunblane and began playing tennis at age 3. A former competitive tennis player, Judy coached Andy and his older brother, Jamie, in their early years.
In March 1996, while 8-year-old Murray was sitting in his classroom at Dunblane Primary School, an armed man by the name of Thomas Hamilton entered the facility and shot and killed 17 people — 16 students and one teacher — before committing suicide by turning the gun on himself. During the horrible event, Murray ran and hid in his headmaster's office.
Murray scored a major youth championship when he won Florida's Orange Bowl in his age group in 1999. In 2004, he became the world's No. 1 junior after winning the U.S. Open junior title. Later that year, he was named the BBC's "Young Sports Personality of the Year."
Shortly after becoming the youngest player to compete in the Davis Cup for Britain.  Murray made his professional debut in April 2005. In 2006, with new coach Brad Gilbert, Murray beat top-ranked Roger Federer in Round 2 of the Cincinnati Masters tournament. Also that year, he defeated Andy Roddick en route to winning the SAP Open for his first ATP title. In 2007, Murray claimed a second straight SAP Open and also won the St. Petersburg Open to break into the Top 10 rankings.
Murray emerged in the tennis spotlight when he defeated Spanish sensation Rafael Nadal to reach the final of the 2008 U.S. Open, before losing to Federer. He ascended to No. 2 in the world in 2009, and finished runner-up at the Australian Open in both 2010 and 2011.
In 2012, Murray made it to the Wimbledon final for the first time with his semifinal win over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Murray's victory made Scotland proud — he was the first tennis pro from Great Britain to reach the Wimbledon final since 1938. However, Murray lost in the final to Federer, who claimed his seventh Wimbledon win.
Andy avenged his Wimbledon loss at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games, held in London, where he beat Federer to take his first Olympic gold medal. That September, he continued to burn up the courts with an impressive run through the U.S. Open field. Murray scored an impressive victory over Novak Djokovic in a tough three sets to clinch his first Grand Slam title, becoming the first player from Great Britain since 1977 — and the first since 1936 — to win a Grand Slam singles tournament.
After losing to Djokovic at the 2013 Australian Open, Murray made history that summer by defeating the Serbian player to claim the Wimbledon men's singles championship. He was the first British male to win the tournament in 77 years and the second Scottish-born player to win Wimbledon since Harold Mahony in 1896.
Murray underwent back surgery in September 2013 following his loss in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open. His performance was uneven for much of the 2014 season, though he made news by hiring former women's champion Amelie Mauresmo to be his coach.
The Scot was seemingly was back on track when he reached his fourth Australian Open final in early 2015. That March, he scored career victory No. 500 while competing at the Miami Open.
Murray followed with an impressive run at the 2015 French Open, battling back from a two-set deficit in the semifinals before succumbing to Djokovic. A few weeks later, he reached the semifinals of Wimbledon, but his hopes of advancing were cut short by the ageless Federer. Murray's subsequent fourth-round loss at the U.S. Open not only thwarted his last chance for a major title in 2015, it snapped his streak of 18 consecutive appearances in a Grand Slam quarterfinal.
Murray began the 2016 season on a strong note, advancing to the Australian Open final before suffering another loss to his nemesis, Djokovic. However, he gained some revenge by defeating Djokovic to claim the Italian Open in May and then sustained his high level of play through the French Open. With his semifinal win over defending champion Stan Wawrinka, Murray became the first British player to reach the French Open final since 1937. However, his bid to add another Slam title fell short when he wound up on the losing end of a blistering Djokovic onslaught once again.
In July 2016, Murray advanced to the semifinals at Wimbledon after defeating Jo Wilfried-Tsonga. In the final, he upended Milos Raonic, the first Canadian man to make it to the Wimbledon final, 6-4, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (2). The victory was Murray's third Grand Slam title.
The following month, Murray continued his sterling play by defeating Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro at the Rio Games, making him the first male tennis player to successfully defend his Olympic singles title.
Hampered by a lingering hip injury for much of 2017, Murray wound up withdrawing from the U.S. Open in late summer. He then underwent surgery the following January.
Murray returned to competitive tennis in June 2018 and was back in Grand Slam action at that year's U.S. Open, but struggled to get into a groove post-operation.
Just before the start of the 2019 Australian Open, Murray announced that his hip was still bothering him and he would likely retire by the conclusion of Wimbledon that summer, if not sooner. However, after battling through a first-round match that ended in defeat, he suggested he may undergo another operation in an attempt to regain mobility on the court. He eventually had BHR surgery in January 2019.
Murray returned to the professional tennis scene in June 2019 competing in several tournaments including Queen's Club Championships, Wimbledon, Canadian Open and Winston-Salem Open. Sadly he has never been able to fully capture the form that saw him sit at the number one spot for 41 weeks.
In April 2015, Murray married longtime girlfriend Kim Sears at Dunblane Cathedral in his hometown. They have s son and three daughters; the youngest of the girls was born in March 2021.
Murray is on the leadership team of Malaria No More UK, a charity that raises funds and awareness to save lives in Africa, and a global ambassador for the World Wildlife Fund.
Heading into 2017, he was knighted in the New Year Honours for services to tennis and charity.

Crimes That Shook Britain (London)
Tumblr media
Murder of Nisha Patel-Nasri Special Constable Nisha Patel-Nisri, 29, was stabbed to death outside her Wembley home in May 2006.  It was assumed she’d interrupted a burglary. Her husband Fadi Nasri made an emotional televised appeal for information. But, six months later, police found the murder weapon - a knife missing from the Nasris’ kitchen - in a nearby drain.
CCTV footage showed a silver Audi - traced to a nightclub bouncer - pulling up to the drain. The bouncer claimed his friend Jason Jones, 36, of disposed of the knife.  Jones’ phone records connected him to drug dealer Rodger Leslie - and also to Nisha’s husband Fadi Nasri. Officers charged all four with murder. At the February 2008 trial, it was revealed Nasri had been having an affair with a Lithuanian prostitute, was £100,000 in debt.
Nasri had paid Jones £15,000 to kill his wife for her life insurance - a deal set up by dealer Leslie.  The bouncer was acquitted, but Jones, Leslie and Nasri were all found guilty and sentenced to life.
Tumblr media
John Christie On 9 March 1950, Timothy Evans was hanged for murdering his daughter Geraldine. Police believed he’d also killed his wife Beryl at 10 Rillington Place in Notting Hill, London.
Evans claimed the downstairs neighbor John Christie killed Beryl in a botched abortion, but Christie was a prosecution witness, and the jury believed him.  When Christie moved house three years later, another tenant stumbled across three bodies in a hidden alcove in Christie’s kitchen. A total of seven bodies were found in the house and garden - including those of Beryl and Geraldine, plus Christie’s wife Ethel.
Christie was arrested and confessed to murdering seven women. Most were raped and strangled.  On 5 July 1953, Christie was hanged by the same executioner who’d hanged innocent Timothy Evans.
Tumblr media
Killing of Rachel Nickell The sexual assault and killing of Rachel Nickell, 23, on Wimbledon Common in July 1992, was one of Britain’s biggest unsolved cases.  The model was stabbed 49 times in broad daylight.
Heartbreakingly, her son, then 2, was found clinging to her, covered in blood, begging her to wake up.  A local man was charged, but the trial collapsed.
In November 2004, after a DNA breakthrough, killer and rapist Robert Napper became prime suspect. He was already in psychiatric hospital Broadmoor for murdering Samantha Bisset and her daughter Jasmine, 4, in 1993.  Napper finally admitted killing Rachel and, in 2008, pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.
Tumblr media
Death of Baby P In August 2007, 17-month-old Peter Connelly, known as Baby P before his full name was released to the media was found dead in his cot in Haringey, north London, with a catalogue of injuries.
His mother Tracey, her lover, Steven Barker and his brother Jason Owen had inflicted the unimaginable violence.  Prior to Peter’s death, doctors and social services had noticed injuries, yet Peter was always returned to his mother.
Just days before Peter’s death, a social worker failed to spot further injuries - disguised by chocolate deliberately smeared on his face.  When he died, little Peter had a broken back, fractured shin, his ear was ripped, a tooth knocked out and his head was gashed.
The distressing case left the nation horrified. Connelly, Barker, and Owen were convicted of causing Peter’s death, and jailed. Owen and Connelly were released but since returned to prison for breaching parole.  Haringey council apologized for its failure to save the life of little Peter Connelly.
Tumblr media
Dennis Nilsen In February 1983, residents of 23 Cranley in Muswell Hill, north London, complained of blocked drains and a sickening stench.  In the outside drain, a technician found bones and rotting human remains.
In the filthy attic of Dennis Nilsen’s flat, police found dismembered, decaying corpses. Nilsen had been luring young gay men to his flat, then strangling them.  After cutting them up, he’d boil the skin off their bones and hide body parts in the house. He’d flushed limbs, flesh and organs down the toilet and sink.
Three men were killed at Cranley Gardens, 12 more were murdered at Nilsen’s previous flat in Cricklewood, where he’d burned remains in the garden.  Nilsen was serving a whole-life sentence for the murders when he died in 2018 from a pulmonary embolism.
Tumblr media
Murder of Stephen Lawrence On 22 April 1993, Stephen Lawrence, 18, was killed in Eltham, south London, in a racist attack - David Norris, Gary Dobson, and three other suspects were arrested and Norris and Dobson were charged with murder, but the case was dropped due to insufficient evidence.
In 2005, laws preventing suspects being tried twice for the same crime were scrapped. New DNA evidence was found on Dobsons’ and Norris’ clothes and, in 2011, they were re-tried, found guilty of murder and jailed for life.
