Gotta love how friendly and nice updates are on Linux Mint compared to Windows. You can set up automated updates, but I update manually because it's fun and I like the control.
And I just updated the freaking kernel, and it just politely asks me to reboot the system as soon as possible. It even says please. No threats of forced reboots, no "you have to set a time of day when we won't suddenly reboot the system while you are using", none of that bullshit.
On Windows 10, even regular updates took forever. And every big feature update with a new version of Windows 10 would force me into a setup page for stuff I've already set up, asking for things I didn't want and didn't even have the hardware to set up, like fingerprint recognition. That setup page hijacked my computer for minutes.

file locking
if you use windows, you're used to the concept that only one program can access any given file at a time. ("this file is open in another program.")
in short, this is dumb. windows is the only relevant operating system that does this. in long:
say you have a file, containing the details and account balance of a customer. say PROCESS A reads from this file, and PROCESS B also reads from this file. PROCESS A changes the account balance, and writes those changes into the file. PROCESS B, having an older version of the file in its memory, then changes its version of the account balance, and writes that out to the file. PROCESS A's changes have been lost. this is a race condition.
a simple way to solve this problem would be to use a file lock; "lock" the file so that only one program can access it at a time, to force serialisation.
most operating systems have system calls to lock files. in unix-based operating systems (e.g. linux and macOS) there is the system call fcntl() also flock() and lockf() that locks a file. importantly, though, this defaults to advisory locking.
there are multiple kinds of file locking. advisory locking, where the locks only apply to cooperating processes, and mandatory locking, where the locks apply to all processes. unix does support mandatory locking, but honestly probably don't use it? it seems like more trouble than it's worth unless you really really need it.
under advisory locking, processes that care about locks can obey the locks, and processes that don't can still do what they want to do. it's a good compromise between protecting against race conditions and letting programs (or the user) use their computer how they see fit.
...windows is an operating system that chose violence, and defaults to automatic mandatory locking, always, with no way to change it.

Windows really does suck as an OS for any sort of power management.
My work laptop was at 21% when I got in a little over an hour ago and it is now at 7% screaming that I plug it in with the charger I have at home.
A Linux laptop would still be good for idling for the next 2hrs.

Breaking News: Teams chat and outlook still suck ass.
Got a little teams notice just hanging out like an extreme introvert got asked "How are you doing today" and just thinks if it doesn't move we won't notice it.
