xiao x reader headcanons pt. 1

xiao x genderneutral!reader/traveller; reader is based off lumine/aether, but can be considered an independent oc!

fluff! I was going to write nsfw but... the fluff comes first! I don’t think I can get to the spicy parts until maybe part 3...

dating xiao is... slow. there’s no other way to put it. it took you a couple weeks worth of almond tofu to coax him into sitting down and eating with you. even then, he often says stupid things like “don’t come close to me.” and “a mere human wouldn’t be able to understand.” to drive you away.

you, however, are stubborn. very stubborn. when you wanted something, you’d work for it. soon enough, you took over smiley yanxiao’s job of fixing up xiao’s daily dose of almond tofu, and after that one time you managed to drag xiao down to the kitchen to watch you make a fresh serving, supper sessions at wangshu inn’s kitchen in the middle of the night became a regular occurrence.

during your nightly supper sessions, you would share stories of your adventures in the day: how you met a girl who spoke to hilichurls, how you managed to defeat a ruin guard after stabbing it straight in it’s eye by plunging off a cliff, and how your friend diluc helped you craft a new sword when you went back to mondstadt. as you rambled on, he would pretend that he couldn’t care less and simply eat silently. even so, you noticed that he would stop eating and frown a little every time you mentioned one of your male travel companions.

“there’s no need to travel all the way to mondstadt to ask that bard or that red haired boy to help you. if you’re in danger in the future, just call my name.”

after he said that, you couldn’t help but want to tease him. “oh? the o’ great and powerful guardian yaksha will come to help me, an insignificant traveler?”

to your surprise, his response was firm and steadfast. with his eyes locked to yours, he stated without hesitation, “yes. i will protect you.”

you were flustered at his declaration, because, hell, you had a humongous crush on xiao. given how stoic and distant he’s been, you’ve long resigned yourself to the idea that you’d be the one doing all the chasing and wooing for your crush on him to get anywhere, and you were already content with the progress you’ve made. you planned to get to his heart slowly and steadily one plate of almond tofu at a time, and you never expected this, this stupidly gorgeous adeptus to say something so dangerous for your heart rate— he said it as if he cared, as if your safety mattered to him.

“how did you even know that diluc has red hair anyway? you’ve never met him, have you?” you asked, grasping at anything to change the topic to calm your racing heart.

it did nothing to help, however, for xiao actually flushed at your question. his ears were red and he refused to meet your eyes. “i’ve seen him around.”

“oh? you have? when? where? how?”

“you don’t need to know. it’s late. you should rest.” with that, xiao retired to his room, though not before he hastily grabbed his half-eaten plate of almond tofu.

ever since then, xiao has become your regular travel partner. when you called for him in the middle of battle, he would come crashing down from the sky, wreaking havoc in his wake and annihilating the enemies you were struggling against. when you were tired and whispered his name, he would appear and whisk you away to wangshu inn, tucking you into bed and insisting that you rest.

one night, you lay on the grass plains together to watch a sky full of stars. “has the skies of teyvat always looked like this, xiao?”

“yes. it has been thousands of years, but the sky has always been bright and full of stars like this.”

“xiao.”

“yes?”

“do you like me?”

there was a long silence, before he finally responded. “i do not understand what humans mean when they declare their affection for each other. while their lives are fleeting like the flowers that cover these plains, adepti are old and unchanging like the skies above.”

your heart sank. even though you have spent a lot of time together and xiao clearly cared for you, perhaps it was too early. you shouldn’t have rushed to ask this— he definitely knows that you like him now and he’ll start telling you to stay away agai—

“but i will admit, i am rather fond of you. you’re the only human who has never shrunk away from me in fear, and the only human who has been so persistent in getting to know me. even if your life may be short and fleeting compared to mine, i will protect you.”
