When the general public and enemies aside learned that clones had wings, a lot of them were confused. Why give an army such a vulnerability? Was it just to show that the investment (which had been a secret from everyone apparently) was worth the money?
No matter, most detested them on the grounds they were clones from the start, so most either didn't pay attention to the wings, or would try and get a feather (unwanted or otherwise). Over time however, those who were more of a cruel nature began to realize that certain colors meant certain things, and the color red scared them far above the others.
Red was the color of protectors, of those who were far more willing to act outside the GAR purview if you invoked their wrath.
Some had red peppered among their base color, bright streaks of red found highlighted in Cody's golden feathers alongside the ombre of grey that colored Wolffe. They were the ones to speak loudly and use their words to send someone running or spilling apologies like a broken dam, and were of the few that held more restraint than others.
It was the darker shades of red you really had to look out for.
Neyo was one to make citizens who hurt his brothers just vanish, and while he could never be connected, no one dared go against the clone with the stark white wings shadowed with an almost blood red. Rex hadn't had the dark red clashing for a while, but after Umbara, the red had cascaded over the lower parts of his wings nigh overnight as he kept a close eye on his men, wishing deep down inside he'd killed Krell himself for all the pain left behind.
No one however, matched Fox and his feathers all the same shade of ruby.
The sight of them in the halls of the Senate building incited a feeling of dread of those who took pleasure heckling and treating the clones like they were the scum found in an alley. While Fox rarely did more than speak in a monotone voice after corning a particular person in offices or back hallways, there were a few times he had done much much more.
An attaché from a Separatist-aligned senator that had attempted to kidnap a shiny, claiming they had been promised one after a game of sabacc, vanished shortly before he was to return home. After several hours of intense search, they were found in the morgue of a lower levels precinct, witnesses saying he had fallen to his demise. The shiny was relieved to hear the news, and only some of the senior officers noticed the dangerous smile Fox had, only coming off as a kind one to the shiny who didn't understand.
Well, understand yet
News broke one morning of a gang that had been wiped out, the only thing that was any clue was half of a red feather. Countless clones were hounded but none were ever confirmed to have been anywhere near the former gang hideout, but in the underworld it was known these particular people had found sadistic glee in trying to de-wing the patrolling Corrie Guard. They had been successful only a few days before, leaving a clone without either wings after wrestling him out of sight, so for them to wind up dead so quickly made the Corrie Guard shifts turn into just endless walks around, those who even look at them wrong fleeing before the men could do more than shrug. The wingless clone knew who had done it when Fox remained by his side day and night, letting out a Force be damned laugh when the wounded man was informed of their demise.
Red was a color civilians and their enemies feared, and for the men it appeared for, it meant safety.
Funny how that works out.

Part SEVEN of "Clone Danny"
Red Robin, Danny recognizes, steps away from him as he sits up. "My name is Phantom," he signs, blinking the exhaustion out of his eyes. (From Red Robin's perspective, it looks like he has no eyes. There lacks his signature green glow.) "I'm not a gang member, just an out-of-town vigilante."
Red Robin frowns at him, an uncertain grip on the bō in his other hand. "Phantom?" He repeats, no lacking amount of suspicion in his voice. "How can I believe that?"
Right. Yeah, okay, that's fair. Danny shrugs at him, and slumps against the wall. "Google search?" He gestures, he's been out in the daytime before and he's seen the news articles about him.
Red's eyes narrow at him and Danny simply draws his knees up and faceplants into them, half-listening to Red's murmurs into his comm while also trying to get some extra-shut eye.
("Oracle, can you pull up anything on a vigilante named Phantom? The guy here is claiming to be one." Tim says.
"On it."
"Is this Phantom wearing a white mask?" Bruce asks, his voice gruff like an aftershock. "There's a vigilante who shares the same name, but he resides in Illinois."
"Is this guy from that Amity city you visited ages ago?" Says Tim, before shaking his head. "Don't answer that. Yes, he's wearing some freaky mask. I said it reminded me of Hood's helmet for a reason."
"I've got something," Oracle interrupts, "Bats' right. as usual. The Phantom of Amity Park, not much stuff of this guy but he's only been out for over a year. Apparently, his rogues' gallery consists of ghosts."
"Oh great.")
"Look tell the Batman that I'm sorry for trespassing on his turf," He signs irritably when Red Robin eventually starts talking to (re: interrogating) him again. "It's not like I want to be here."
"How did you get in Gotham anyways?" Red Robin questions, batman was on his way to help deal with the situation but Tim doubted he wouldn't get caught up on the way with dealing with petty crime. "Your turf is nearly a thousand miles away from here."
"Two words." Danny deadpans, "Teleport ghost." (Red Robin winces sympathetically.) "I'm keeping this bastard in the thermos for a month for this alone."
(Danny was ignoring the slow-choking anxiety growing in his lungs over how he was gonna get home. He never takes his phone when he goes out, the risk of breaking it was too high. He had no way of contacting anyone to get him home.)
(He swallows the growing lump in his throat, and buries the feeling in the back of his mind.)
"Thermos?"
Danny unclips his Fenton Phantom Thermos off from his belt loop and shows it to Red Robin. "My ghost-catching device," He says with one hand, tilting it carefully for Red to inspect. "I wish I could say I made it, but its a FentonWorks invention."
(He wasn't sure if it was a smart idea to say who it belonged to, but saying it wasn't his probably loosened up any tracks on him, right?)
"Do you work with these Fentons, then?" Red asks, and something dark and shadowy flickers from the corner of Danny's eye. He glances over, and sees nothing, and his hackles raise.
(Either that was Batman, or a ghost, or Danny's mind playing tricks on him. He couldn't feel his ghost sense building in his throat, so he decided it was either the latter of the former.)
Danny snorts, quiet and gruff. "No." He clips his thermos to his belt again, stifling a smile on his face. "The Fentons hate me actually, I prevent them from catching ghosts themselves. Their son gives me their tech."
He had a cover story, so he might as well stick with it, right?
Batman shows up at that moment, appearing atop the little roof where the door is, and giving Danny a heart attack when he speaks in his low, rumbly voice like thunder rolling in, "Why would they hate you for that?"
Danny shoots up to his feet with a startled yell in his throat, clutching his chest as he whirls around and looks up. He nearly runs into Red Robin, and signs a few choice swears at the Bat.
"wow you're scarier in person, asshole."
"you didn't answer my question."
"Of course I didn't, you scared me." and Danny takes a trembling step back when the Batman jumps down and lands on the roof in front of him. He's faced ghosts before, but somehow the living is always scarier.
"But, um, the reason is a bit.. complicated, I guess." He says, fingers beginning to shake as his adrenaline wears off. God is he tired. He wants to go home. "The Fentons are the local ghost hunters and local crazies. I don't know if I can call them mad scientists because they're harmless to the living."
"But they're extremely anti-ghost. I've heard from their son multiple times the very unethical things they would do to ghosts if they got their hands on one."
Danny 'talks' a little more before calling it quits, even telling Batman that he can't tell him more without putting his identity at risk.
Plus, its getting harder and harder to hide his bone-deep exhaustion and his growing fear of being stranded in the most dangerous city in America with no way home.
"I would love to tell you more, believe me I'm dying to." Danny signs, shaky sarcasm dripping from his fingers. His hands are visibly trembling and he's withholding a slowly growing panic attack. "But I would like nothing more than to figure out a way to get home."
"Do you have no one to contact?"
"Sort of. But only one of them could probably come get me and get me back to Amity by sunrise. And I have no phone."
That one person being Ellie.

Maybe don’t diss someone with literal reflective beskar in their feathers.
Idea based off @yukipri ‘s Winged Clones AU: Take Flight, Brothers All
I read that the clones could use their wings to blind enemies if angled with light correctly, and then this happened. The first page is literally what happens in Ch. 3 in the fic, I just thought it would be funny if Cody “accidentally” got back at Skywalker while on a conveniently sunny planet.

clones with wings au!
something i’ve been cooking in my brain for MONTHS but have only just now gotten down on paper. let’s go!
starting off:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the plain wings. in this specific au, the clones are from a species that have wings as opposed to a general everyone-has-wings au! the clones all have identical wings (aside from the rare mutation), which are basically bird wings with some minor changes. for one, they have opposable thumbs (can you really call it a thumb ??) at the end of the radius and ulna (lower arm bones) quite like bats! but i gave them two thumbs on each wing. for some reason. here’s what the wing skeleton looks like:
Tumblr media
clones have very plain-looking wings, but they use them as blank canvases. since the undersides are so pale, they’re perfect for custom dye jobs.
Tumblr media
there’s a structured system and language when it comes to wing dye jobs. the wing is broken up into four sections, where each section has a different meaning. the first (and often the first dye received as well) is the rank, at the outermost edge of the wing. this is the most structured out of all the sections; unlike the others, zero creativity for presentation is allowed. as clones aren’t technically supposed to dye their wings, it’s not written in any regulations anywhere, but it’s widely understood to be SOP.
Tumblr media
ranks are broken into 2 tiers of silver and gold. gold denotes command staff ranks and silver are the remaining vast majority of troopers. the only ranks with 2 different commonly seen variations are lieutenants, to distinguish CMOs from platoon lieutenants, and privates, as though all shinies hold the rank of private they don’t earn wing dye until after their first battle (just like armor paint!)
the second section is rarely used—generally only by medics or other specialists. it is at the bottommost part of the wing. red stripes (or other patterns) denote that a clone is a medic. it’s a practicality thing more than it’s an aesthetic thing, same as the recognizable sigils medics paint on their armor.
the third is the most eye-catching and the most custom—no two clones have them alike! this is the personal design section, at the very center of the wing. the color of the markings here signifies the battalion a clone is in; however, this section is not meant to mark allegiance, it’s meant to mark personal history, and if a clone has ever transferred battalions, they keep the colors of their old battalion as well as including the colors of their new one. this design evolves as a clone does, often getting more intricate as they age. some clones always prefer simpler designs, though (captain rex being one!), and choose to retain the plainer colors of their youth.
the fourth is a subsection of the personal history section, marking the batchmates who have passed on. these stripes, almost always golden, are located at the part of the wing closest to the body, on the long feathers at the base of the wing. some clones have zero markings here, some have four (or more, if a sibling they felt as close to as a batchmate is lost). it’s kept as a way to honor and remember the dead. this is the only marking that’s dyed on the top of the wing as well as the underside.
here are some more examples of designs for some clones!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(that last one there is my oc, cadaver!)
some other general lore:
medics are generally the only ones capable of carrying others in flight because it’s something they specifically train for. carrying another trooper while flying is incredibly strenuous, but medics need to do so in order to evacuate troops from battlefields efficiently or catch them if they’re injured while in flight. following this, medics also train numerous flight maneuvers such as dives and tight turns in order to be able to catch injured siblings mid-flight.
clones have wings built for soaring and sustained flight, meaning that acrobatics don’t come naturally to them. bursts of speed and tight turns are something they have to train for; it’s not built in.
wings are a massive part of social life within the GAR. as hard as they try, there are spots on their wings that are impossible for clones to preen and maintain by themselves. thus, they rely on their siblings to keep each other in tip-top shape. as a result, preening is a very social activity, and often done to express affection as much as it is to keep each other healthy.
following the previous note, dye jobs are also a massive part of the social upkeep. they have to redye their wings frequently because of how often they lose feathers or have the intricate pigment damaged. this means clones rely on their siblings to keep the physical representations of their identities in place (and i’ll let you imagine how this affects clones who survive order 66.)
clones’ wings are NOISY. this does mean that stealth while flying is difficult for them, but it also means that they can use their wings as a form of communication. for example, snapping one’s wings open creates a loud wooshing sound that can grab the attention of everyone in the room. it’s used often by commanding officers trying to give orders to a rowdy platoon.
the wings are incredibly expressive and are the hardest part of one’s body language to control. a clone could have a blank face and a perfect parade rest, but their wings will be a tell-all for their true feelings. thankfully, the subtler of the numerous wing expressions are always lost on natborns.
i’ll add more if i think of it!
breaking my hiatus for this because i was too excited about it! i’m such a nerd about birds & wing aus in particular and i don’t see enough of it so i made it myself! permissions-wise, you’re totally welcome to use this lore in any art or fics if it inspires you, and if you want to create your own designs feel free to use that blank version of the wings right at the top! i would really appreciate a tag if you post any of it. thank you guys, and i hope you enjoy!

star wars wings!au – obi-(s)wan kenobi.
Tumblr media
• when obi-wan was a padawan, his wings were disproportionately large but also weak. he had to train hard to learn to fly. if it wasn't for persistence and self-discipline (and the support of the kwai-gon), he would never have been able to fly.
• master is quite charming and charismatic, and the wings only add to the image of a kind man who you want to trust.
• he doesn't like to fly. walk? yes, please.
• wings of white color demand careful maintenance. kenobi is willing to give this time, a lot of time. he would rather waste his time than go out into the world with dirty wings. even during the clone wars, when most jedi did not have time to take an extra breath, obi-wan was just as meticulous.
• you need to know that obi-wan is very graceful, he can flaunt his wings and it really makes an impression.
• habit of covering anakin with a wing when he was a padawan has not disappeared over time and has spread to ahsoka (and cody...🤭).
• sometimes he has to hide or cover his wings with something, because white color stands out a lot and prevents him from carrying out operations under cover.
• swan is a symbol of love and fidelity. you already figured out that this symbolism applies to kenobi as well.

Horrible modern fantasy AU idea: Winged Goddess Daughter loses her wings (her brother cut them off) and most of her power, cast down to earth and having to struggle to regain what strength she can to get back to The Realm Of Gods and stop her brother.
She manages to set up a place to bide her time, a little herbal-and-crystal magic shop (she's got enough power to invent a social security number and credit history for "Dorothy 'Dot' Morrison", but not enough to miracle a penthouse) in a slightly secluded park area near a mid-sized town with a history of witches.
Ahsoka wanders in one day, manages to endear herself to Dot, and now the Goddess has a sidekick. Not a worshiper, not a devotee, not an acolyte. Just a teenager who thinks she's Real Cool and is willing to go find Weird Plants and Glowing Rocks for a part-time paycheck, especially if one on the duties is Owl Care.
Part of me is insisting on an adoption plot but ehhhh I'm big on the Disaster Trio being family.
(It's a 'horrible' AU because it was inspired partly by a gorier, more actively violent version of the wing removal from Maleficent.)

He's not sure when it had started following him, but he notices the first time after he's arrested someone. A curious little thing with cascading golden feathers, it's perched on a street lamp, watching as Commander Fox manhandled the perp into the back of his cruiser, and flies off when the clone glances over.
It's back a few weeks later, silently flying alongside the clone as he takes a rarely afforded flight over Coruscant, drifting over just enough for the tips of their wings to touch before eventually the bird fades in the colored haze that plagues the planets surface. Fox enjoyed the company, however short it had been, and is able to see a single star before he heads back to the barracks.
A good sign maybe?
The bird is just outside the Senate building a few days later, uttering a single cry that causes Fox to whirl around, ruby wings narrowing avoiding the slice of a vibroblade of an assassin rushing towards the senators he'd been escorting. They're taken down within a single breath, and Fox shares a gaze with the bird for a moment, a silent thanks that's accepted with a single chirp.
He draws the bird later that night, and pins it in his locker. After that he goes to the library for books dealing with how to identify various birds, and learns it's in fact an owl.
They're not native to Coruscant.
The bird, no, owl is there during one of his rare night shifts, and perches on his shoulder as he quietly makes his rounds. The Senate building is at its most beautiful when all the natborns are asleep and away, so he takes his time more than he'd like to admit.
The subtle glow the owl have dims to nothing when they pass near the Chancellor's office.
The owl is there when Sheev Palpatine, hidden Sith Lord, plummets to his death one early morning. It shining golden feathers could be mistaken for the real thing at a first glance, perching on Fox's shoulder once more as the man flies down to investigate the "mysterious death" among the panic of many civilians. The owl had seen Fox stun the man before throwing him through his office window down to his demise, and flies away when Fox crouches down to inspect. A lightsaber with a blade red as blood is discovered on Palpatine's desk, and an awkwardly dropped data disk reveals the information that begins a cascade of information to the eventual truth.
He was the Sith, and the owl rests beside Fox when he sits on a rooftop to watch the proceeding chaos. Several of the Jedi Masters bow to his owl after Fox's moment of peace, and he shrugs before delving into the role of Commander to calm the panic throughout the Senate and populous. The owl stays this time, sometimes coming and sometimes going, but always a golden beacon beside the fiercest protector within the GAR.
The Daughter smiles.

Warmup #9 - Codywan
Rating: G
Summary: Cuddling with wings is difficult. Cody knows a handy trick.
Notes: Maybe one day I'll write a proper fic with the wing au, for now it's staying in warmup territory ^^
~~~
Cody was used to his wings getting squished. He and every vod enjoyed sleeping in piles, and having their wings laying freely was.. a challenge.
They'd developed stretches to do after sleeping that helped alleviate the ache. They were nice to do even if one's wing hadn't been pinned under another vod for most of the sleep cycle.
Or well, it didn't have to be a vod. He looked over at Obi-Wan who was just starting to wake up. Cody must have wrapped his wings at least partly around both of them while they'd slept, he didn't have another explanation for the position they'd found themselves in. They were both on their sides, an arguably sensible way of sleeping with wings. But the weight of both of them was pressing down on one of Cody's wings.
Obi-Wan buried his face in the soft feathers underneath him and hummed.
Cody smiled and shifted slightly, his feathers ruffling.
Obi-Wan scrunched up his nose and looked over at him, then at the feathers he was laying on. "Oh shit."
Cody tilted his head in askance.
Obi-Wan quickly pushed himself up and Cody winced as his hand pressed down and tugged on his feathers.
"I'm so sorry." Obi-Wan apologised, looking quite like he needed some more sleep.
Cody sat up, arranging his wings behind himself and stretching them out. "What for?"
"I laid on your wing, that must have hurt."
Cody hummed. "I've had multiple vode on them before, I'm used to it."
Obi-Wan blinked after him as he got up to properly stretch. "Ah."
Cody grinned. "Yeah. Vode sleep in piles, you get used to it quick." He slumped in relief when he managed to stretch a crick out of his offended wing. "I should be good to fly again in half an hour."
Incomprehension. "You have got to teach me those stretches."
Cody laughed.
I read this amazing Cody-centric wing-fic by @meebles, so now I'm thinking about Clones with wings, and - because I'm me - specifically the Bad Batch with wings.
What would their wings look like? The regs' wings would all be identical/very similar, of course, with the individuality mostly showing in dyes and so on. But the Batch with their mutations will likely have different wings too.
I want Crosshair's wings to be similar to the ice vultures', for obvious thematic reasons, but also because vultures tend to hang around in high places, whether that's sitting in a tree somewhere or circling high up in the air, waiting and watching. Good sniper traits. I don't think we really get to see the vultures in the show, but I assume they're white/grey, to blend in against the snow and ice and white/grey skies. Good colors for Crosshair.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The rest will be under the cut because this got away from me a little (a lot).
For Tech, I'm thinking common kestrel wings. I don't know if kestrels have any particular behavioral traits that would fit Tech, I mostly just like their colors for him. I did read a little bit, though, and what stood out to me was that the kestrel has multiple hunting methods - it does the usual bird of prey thing, of circling around on an updraft over open land and diving for its prey, or sitting on a fence pole or in a tree or even a bush and jumping on a mouse or whatever that gets too close. The thing it does that's maybe less common is that it will also skim across fields, very close to the ground, to pounce on anything small enough for it to eat. And maybe I'm reaching a little here, but that seems to me like a very resourceful bird which is also a very competent flier, and I figure that does fit our Tech very nicely.
I do kind of want to pick vulture for Tech too, if just to match his twin, but. I like the kestrel better. I mean, just look at it:
Tumblr media
For Wrecker... Maybe something like a white-tailed eagle? Because. Big. And good at fishing. On a more angsty note, I'm thinking whatever happened to give Wrecker his iconic scar/cost him his eye, it probably also damaged his left wing. Maybe not enough to ground him fully, but enough that flying/steering would be harder for him, which is at least part of the reason he's still scared of heights.
Tumblr media
Hunter's wings would probably be pretty similar to the regs', maybe a tiny bit smaller. I'm thinking something like the New Zealand falcon, or kārearea. Bird of prey, dark brown, fairly simple coloring (though still very pretty). According to the NZ Department of Conservation, there are three ecological forms of the kārearea: A large, pale 'eastern' falcon; a smaller, darker 'Bush' falcon, and a 'southern' falcon that's somewhere inbetween in both size and color. Perhaps the regs' wings are more like the eastern/southern ones (left image, I think), while Hunter's are more like those of the bush falcon (right image)?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Disclaimer: I actually know fuck-all about these birds, only what I've just read - if I'm mistaken about the identity of these birds, I blame the sources, which should all be linked in the images, though tumblr is tumblr.
Echo doesn't get his own picture (sorry, Echo) because he's a reg, technically, so he has wings like the left one above. I... am not sure what happened to them in that explosion, or his time on Skako Minor. Probably not very good things. Maybe his wings are just heavily scarred/damaged, maybe they're gone completely. Maybe he's got prosthetics for one or both of them?
(I'm just now realizing that the Clones having wings would mean some things on that mission to Skako Minor - namely, the escape from the techno Union's facility - would turn out slightly different, since they don't need those flying reptiles to get away when they have their own wings. Though maybe they still do if at least one (Skywalker), and maybe two or three of the people on that team can't fly (Echo, Wrecker). I'm well aware them having wings would completely change the mission to Eriadu in the TBB s2 finale, what with them being able to just. fly over there. and away again. Even if they do use the sky-rail or whatever, for Wrecker and/or Echo's sake, Tech would still have his wings, so... All's good.)
Omega also doesn't get her own image (sorry, Omega) because while she's not a reg, exactly, she's an unaltered Clone, which means... Well. I'm not actually sure what that means. I suppose that depends on whether Fett had wings, or that's something the Kaminoan's added? I'm gonna go with the first one, because I like that better. The Kaminoans may have changed things about the wings, but Omega will still have wings, because Fett did too. But that also means she'll have wings identical, or at least very similar to the regs' (left img. above), though maybe she'll have lighter feathers, to match her lighter hair. Also, since she's still (physically) a child, she'll have wings that look more like the immature/juvenile falcons', which means... less spots and stripes? I think? I'm not sure.
I'm also not sure when this whole thing changed from 'idle musings' to 'full-blown headcanons' but it certainly happened. Let me just go back and add a read-more somewhere. Alright, that's done. I'm not really sure if I'm actually gonna... do anything with these headcanons. I do really like the concept of meebles' fic, though - showing different relationships through the grooming and preening of wings - so maybe I'll write something a la that at some point, just for the Batch instead of Cody. Maybe some hurt/comfort about what the Empire does to Crosshair's wings while he's a prisoner? And how he has to learn to trust people near him/his wings again, and how his brothers help him heal, both physically and mentally.
If I do ever write something about all this, I'll make sure to link back to meebles's fic as the inspiration - and in case you missed it up top, or just don't wanna scroll all the way back up again (that's fair, this got rather long), here it is again: and the stars, like a loved one by firelord_zutara on Ao3, also known as meebles here on tumblr. Go read it, you won't regret it.
