hi. i’m gonna rant for a minute. feel free to skip :-)
-
i saw this post of insta and it’s that trend of like “are we ____ in every universe?” and it was dad and daughter. it made me think of my own father and the fact that he’s not in my life anymore (yes i have daddy issues. shocker?)
i tell people i met that my dad passed because i don’t see him as my dad anymore. i am heartbroken by all these wedding videos of dads walking their daughters down the aisle and dancing with them. i will never get that. i have no father figure in my life because of how selfish he was.
i cannot fucking stand the videos of people like “omg haha i have daddy issues. i like older men and calling them daddy!” no. you don’t get it. you will never understand the hatred and loneliness. you’ll never walk by a family and ask “why not me?”
it’s simply not the same and i WILL NOT hear otherwise. having daddy issues isn’t a trend and it’s not hot or kinky. shut the fuck up. literally shut up. i miss my dad so much and i hate my dad so much. i had to leave him in my past to heal from the trauma he caused me. yes, there are some effects of daddy issues like turning to older men, but that’s not all it is.
i’d give anything to have had a normal childhood and to not be like how i am now. i’m terrified whenever i see him in me

I think one of the slept on things that makes The Secret History feel like a real world is Donna Tartt's willingness to introduce a character that is just never brought up again (or brought up once or twice again.)
Because i'm real life, not every person you meet is going to have significance in your life. Not everyone is going to change that plot. Think about the teacher that takes over when Julian leaves. Or the farmer who claims to have seen Bunny. Or Richard's one night stand. Even the man stalking Henry and Bunny in Italy doesn't show up later.
And not only does this fill the gaps in the world, it absolutely helps build suspense. You never know if a character might have significance later, because there's simply no pattern to follow. It keeps you guessing.
Did I mention I started rereading The Secret History

Finished Winter Turning in my 'reread WoF at an acceptable pace' journey. Lemme tell you reading fanfiction has really evolved(?)/ruined the original concept of him as a character.
His original story revolves around this process of tearing down the ideas that were carved into you by the people that were around you when you really didn't have a choice who was around you.
And it's this process that god knows I had to drag myself through. I've learned and am still learning to be a lot kinder to myself and the people around me.
It really breaks my heart to see him not being fast enough in this journey to change himself to allow him to get the happy ending he so desperately (in my opinion) deserves, and I don't know what this says about myself and my own journey.
Anyway writing this down because it's something I want to remember.

Honestly Henry did commit horrible and inexcusable and unforgivable acts but it doesn't mean that every single thing he ever did for the entire book had to be out of ill intent.
He didn't save Richard during Winter to get him to trust him, he saved him because Richard was his friend he found freezing to death in an attic. He wasn't manipulating Camilla, he loved her and was trying to protect her and prevent her abusive brother from hurting her any more. He killed himself for a lot of different reasons but one of them was that it really was the only remaining way he could find to get everyone out of trouble and make things somewhat right again.
He surely was detached, and while he generally didn't feel as strongly as other people and even suppressed his own emotions to try and always be as rational as possible, it's not like he was completely incapable of feeling anything at all. In his own aloof way, he did care for them. I think that it's really the fact that despite everything there was some good in all of them that makes them so compelling, Henry included.

Eddie who never wears enough layers, always just wearing his usual denim and leather combo. Steve makes it his mission to keep him warm, always layering an extra jacket so he can take it off so he can nonchalantly give it to Eddie when he starts shivering.
Eddie who never wears beanies. The last time he complained his ears were getting cold, Steve gives him a 10 minute lecture before finally giving up. Steve had to hold his ears in his gloved hands. The look Eddie gives him as he holds his face is enough to warm up his insides.
Eddie who never wears mittens. Steve has given him maybe three pairs of his gloves already and he still somehow always forgets to bring it. The last time they had to walk, Steve had to stuff Eddie's hand on his winter jacket, hands intertwined, just to keep him warm.
Eddie who never wears scarves. Steve has to always have one wrapped around his passenger seat for Eddie. The van breaks more often in the winter season, so Eddie's been hitching rides with him now, and Steve always, always wraps him in the same baby blue scarf before he leaves for work. Eddie says it's ruining his style but he's always bundled up in it anyway.
Eddie who likes cold drinks on winter. Steve hates it, so he always has a thermos of hot chocolate he hands Eddie before he goes to work. Eddie doesn't say anything, just smiles and says, "Thanks, Stevie."
Steve starts liking Eddie Munson in the spring, with fights against a monster, with blood drying in his hands, with cut off sheets made to be a rope to save his little brother.
Steve starts knowing Eddie Munson in the summer, with pool parties, late nights filled with secrets and smoking weed, with adjusting to this new normal after all the monsters.
Steve falls in love with Eddie Munson in the winter, with red cheeks, intertwined hands in pockets to keep warm, with snow flakes stuck in his hair, with small smiles as they sip hot chocolates together.
They fall in love, easy and fast, just like the snow falling as they finally kiss for the first time.
"You're gonna get cold." Steve murmurs against Eddie's lip.
Eddie smiles cheekily, slipping his hand in Steve's winter jacket again, "You always keep me warm enough."

Dude I found this video that was making a joke about band directors not letting kids get water after doing a full run of the show etc etc and SO MANY people just wanna feel the need to tell you that baseball and football and basketball and every other sport is harder. A) it’s not a competition B) not saying band (colorguard) is harder but band lot heat is a different kind of heat. When it’s a hundred degrees outside and you are standing on a concrete slab that does nothing but absorb heat all day for hours and every time you make a mistake you have to do push ups on the ground that’s too hot to touch and you have to sprint to your water breaks and resets (and the guard has to sprint to like eight different spots to reset flags). I’m not saying we work harder, but I am saying that it DOES take a physical toll and to think twice before calling it easy. I wanna see you walk to a coordinate that isn’t marked on the ground based on a tiny piece of paper and memorize like a hundred of them, March specific steps in time with 200 other people while playing an instrument/throwing things in the air in a lot that feels like 115 degrees for three hours at a time
Marching band IS a read sport

I love that there were SO many inklings that Winter King was just so fucked up. Like, start of song? Excited, happy, maybe a lot but hey that's fine!
Tumblr media
Halfway through? Glimpse of insanity, but not Ice King's kind. The more sinister, evil kind that's subtle and creeping.
Tumblr media
Also? They did SUCH a good choice casting BRIAN DAVID GILBERT?!?!!!! LIKE. A little bit into the episode it just clicked and I went no FUCKING way god DAMN it. And I was right! It was him!!!!! And BDG is so accustomed with like...subtle horror and characters that are fucked up that I felt this is an AMAZING rope for him, I love it so much, like...he's not crazy right? This universe just has them flipped, right??? But the crown corrupts in every universe, so that could never be the case.
I could also go on a whole rant about how our Simon is so much better and healthier than him, and that Simon Petrikov is a really interesting example of taking accountability for your mental illness. Like, we can all agree that Winter King is absolutely fucked up for casting a spell for a hundred years to project his insanity from the crown onto that universes Princess Bubblegum and then say that it was fucking WILLPOWER?!?? But how much responsibility should our Simon take? It's true he was insane with very little to no control over his actions, but they still occurred. What about if he puts the crown back on? Ahpuld he be responsible for his actions then since he's making the decisions o do that, if he succeeds. And plus Simon already feels horribly guilty for his actions!! Like, perhaps Simon takes a bit more guilt than he should, or maybe just the right amount. But Our Simon OWN it. It's his and he wouldn't EVER want anyone else to struggle and go through what he went through, and I think that's commendable. And he also, I personally feel, has the right balance. Ice King wasn't him, but it was still him who did those things. He shouldn't be blamed for it, but he's also understanding of the fact that some people may see him in a different light because of it. It's so fascinating and I promise someone who's was more educated than me on more severe mental illnesses could tall a lot better on this topic. It's just such a fascinating complicated issue to me, especially to be depicted in a show.

Heard someone say "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier made Captain America political" and how fucking dense do you have to be to utter something like that?? truly?? do you taste shit with how far your head up is in your ass??
Captain America has always been political you fool!!! He was a character created as a superhero fighting the fucking Nazis during WW2. Steve Rogers would hate your guts btw!! He was created with H!tler as a nemesis in mind!! He was born to a single not-well-to-do mother!! He was frail and had a bucket load of conditions that made life really difficult for him!!!
If you think Steve Rogers would have stood for the racism and real life commentary in TFATWS you have severely missed the point of Captain America by miles
Steve Rogers has always been against discrimination!!

Have you ever noticed that ever since season one of What If introduced Captain Carter, she's been showing up a lot more than Sam Wilson as Captain America? I once queationed it, which pissed off some Peggy stans on this site to the point where I had to alter the tags so I wouldn't have to deal with them.
Oh yeah I did, trust me, you’re not the only one. Many Sam or Steve or Bucky stans and, yk, Peggy antis here on tumblr noticed it, but her stans are just too stubborn to accept it.
In my humble opinion, I think Peggy is simply a better character for marvel to sell as cap (and not for the right reasons), which is why Sam’s cap hasn’t appeared in 2/3 years and all of Steve’s appearances were butchered.
Steve is noble, all about freedom and doing what’s right. He was a disabled son of immigrants who knew struggle and, in his own words, didn’t like bullies no matter where they came from, which means that doing what was right to him was more important than any government, any authority. Civil War is all about this characterization of Steve, and it’s why he was the perfect man for the job.
Sam is like Steve. He is a noble man who knew struggle and suffering growing up, who lost loved ones, his place in the world the moment he chose to follow what was right instead of what was ordered to him. He was ridiculed and beaten down, and risked losing it all multiple times, but that never made him back down. Plus, to add fuel to the fire, the higher powers would have never accepted him as Captain America because he’s black, no matter if Captain America himself passed the mantle to him, they wouldn’t have accepted him and still didn’t right up to the finale of TFATWS. Sam is perfect for the job and mirrors Steve as the perfect Captain America of his time.
Peggy is… well, she’s nothing of these things.
Yes, she’s a woman, and so everyone would be expected to find sympathy for her, to root for her, but aside from her stans no one actually does. Peggy has a support system and respect, like it or not, and she was relevant. She’s arrogant, she’s headstrong, and she doesn’t go against the system because she is the system. She’s not a minority, she never knew struggle, hell, she lived a comfortable life up until the war and after. And marvel can use her more than Sam or Steve because she’s not troublesome like them, she’s not going to rebel the system if not for selfish reasons or plot points. She’s not Steve, she’s not Sam, and she shouldn’t be, but at the same time Peggy should not be a Captain that marvel should enforce in their media over and over again.
As Erskine said, “Because the strong man who has known power all his life may lose respect for that power, but a weak man knows the value of strength and knows... compassion.” And while Steve and Sam don’t know strength in the sense that Erskine disregards, Peggy does. And if anything, she resembles John Walker.
Not to mention she is no character of her own, she’s simply the mixture of some characters thrown together in a cauldron, and in addition she’s a Mary Sue. She is a villain masked as hero, one that is convenient as a character and can be thrown from side to side as if she was some Y/N insert in an avengers fanfic.
Not only she has made more appearances than the current Captain America, but she managed to insert herself in the majority of What If…’s storylines, even more than actual main characters. Like, you want to tell me people actually want yet another episode about Peggy or with Peggy being a major character instead of Wanda, Loki or the main six avengers? No one does, not even the stans with a functioning brain. But Marvel will not stop, and whatever chokehold Hayley Atwell has on them will last until she’ll be satisfied with the colonization of all the possible marvel projects.
So ultimately, to answer your question: yes, I did notice Sam is being overshadow by a dusty side character that should have stayed dead back in 2016. You’re not alone, and I’m glad I’m not either. If you scroll on my profile you’ll soon find an old post of mine from last year, during the MoM era, where I was talking about this issue, and a Peggy stan went ballistic and on a rant on how I was using Sam as an excuse to hate on Peggy and justify Stucky. (Btw nice move altering the hashtags, I’ve done it too and it’s been a blessing for me.)
Feel free to check that post and come back in the asks, I’d love to discuss that and maybe share some posts regarding the issue (if I can find them lol)

"icicle hates winter blahblah blah-" IDC WHAT U SAY !!!! literally tui herself can say this and i will still go "nuh uh" .
icicle loves winter as much as he loves her. even if she thinks winter was responsible for hailstorms capture, shes just telling herself that to cope with the loss of her brother. even if she constantly insults winter in her head during moon rising , thats just how she grew to think because like cmon. she was literally raised in the ice kingdom. she (and like everyone else) was taught that those stupid circles defined their worth!! ofc she grew up with a judgemental mindset
