is "cooler" really the best term for when the temp goes from -8°F down to -10°F? wouldn't something like "even worse" be more apt?
also, WTF with the high being just a couple dashes? are they saying, "It's just not right to call negative degrees a 'high' temp"?

CASCADE RAPTOR CENTER, a rescue for wild raptors in Oregon, does a LOT of rehabbing and re-wilding various carnivorous birds year round. Their Center got a whopping $30k+ damage to it during the recent winter storms. According to the report on Insta, all birds living there or recovering from illness or injury there - and all humans who were working at the time - are safe and doing well.
If you can reblog this in case any of your mutuals might click through and help them rebuild their destroyed aviaries, please do! I've donated to them before and they do good work.

Potential Bomb Cyclone, Great Lakes Blizzard Ahead | Weather.com
1st image: Winter storm alerts, watches and advisories already issued by the National Weather Service, as of December 19th at 2 PM EST.
A major storm – named Winter Storm Elliott by The Weather Channel – could become a bomb cyclone over the Midwest later this week and bring blizzard conditions to parts of the Great Lakes as well as high winds to the East Coast, snarling travel in the days leading up to the Christmas holiday weekend.
This developing storm will also usher in bitterly cold air to much of the nation as far south as Texas, the Gulf Coast and Florida. For the latest, complete forecast on this cold snap, click here.  ...
...  Bomb Cyclone Perspective
We mentioned earlier that this winter storm could become a bomb cyclone.
As a rule of thumb, meteorologists refer to a strengthening low as "bombing out" or undergoing bombogenesis if its minimum surface pressure drops by at least 24 millibars in 24 hours or less, though how much a pressure drops depends on a storm's latitude.
Meteorologists frequently discuss pressure in terms of millibars, rather than inches of mercury. The lower the pressure in a storm, the more intense it is.
And the greater [the] difference in pressure over an area, the stronger the winds.
Winter Storm Elliott has the potential to plunge to a pressure that could threaten December low-pressure records in the Great Lakes, according to data compiled by Weather Prediction Center meteorologist David Roth.  ...
Bombogenesis!
*Bombogenesis!*

so the leak under the sink is now fixed! YAAAAY!!!
aaaaaannnnnnnnddddd now there’s a busted pipe under the bathtub that’s diverting all the water from the kitchen. That my neighbor does not have the joint to fix it in his big basket of joints and bits.
So he shut the water back off and he will be back tomorrow.

The Mulberry Tree
Here I am
Here I be
Dancing around
The Mulberry tree
Branches sway
While I sing
Dancing around
The Mulberry tree
Touch the leaves, carress them softly
Do you hear the tree; it's talking
It tells of future hopes and dreams
With a whisper softer than butterfly wings
It tells of growth, of wisdom too
It tells a story that touches you
From the rings in its very center
Imparting knowledge of winters it's weathered
Encouraging you and reminding as well
That not all storms will leave you felled
It's wispy voice tells of the future hope
For buds and blossoms that help you cope
And somehow, some way you'll make it through
The winter that freezes time while seeming to break you
So with a shaky breath you becomes me
And I lay my head on the Mulberry tree
And I thank it with my tears and say
I will hold this memory close for my most dismal days
And then with reckless abandon I stand
With hope sparking lightly the song begins again
Here I am
Here I be
Dancing around
The Mulberry Tree
Branches sway
While I sing
Dancing around
The Mulberry tree

My December, January, & February Reads
Will I ever have time to read again????? Here's a pathetic roundup of the past three months.
Thin Skin, Jenn Shapland - One of the most beautiful book covers I've ever seen. The essay topics are a real bummer—radioactive waste, consumerism, the struggle to find meaning—and as someone who loves contemplating life's horrors, I had a great time reading this collection.
Jonathan Abernathy You Are Kind, Molly McGhee - This would kill as a TV adaptation. Apple, since it seems like we're never getting Severance season two, here ya go!
Winter Storms, Elin Hilderbrand - I have no critiques; a perfectly pleasant, festive read.
Big Swiss, Jen Beagin - An incredibly fun time, pulled me right out of a reading slump. It's hilarious and I haven't read anything like it—thank you, Jen Beagin!

A Day on The Farm During and Preparing for A Winter Storm
A winter storm for us can mean several days of temperatures in the teens or single digits, can mean a day or four of rain, sleet and snow, can mean 30+ mph winds for 2-4 days, can mean one, two, four inches of snow for several days or an accumulation of all of the above. We don’t travel much at all especially with any of these weather events but farming means working on the farm during these…

Today in Great Lakes shipping history. December 23rd.
—————IMPORTANT WEATHER WARNINGS AND UPDATES——————
2022: Vessels have been seeking shelter since late Thursday. Among them, Kaye E. Barker was anchored in Goulais Bay off the Canadian shore above the Soo. Herbert C. Jackson, Hon. James L. Oberstar, Paul R. Tregurtha and Philip R. Clarke were on the hook above DeTour. Mesabi Miner and James R. Barker were anchored at the southern end of the Keweenaw Peninsula, east side. American Mariner was headed for St. Ignace to drop anchor. Burns Harbor was stopped off Port Inland. Traffic in the Duluth/Superior area was at a standstill. (See map above)
Storm-force wind warnings covering Lake Michigan, Lake Huron and Lake Superior have been issued by the National Weather Service. These Storm Warning-strength winds, which are higher than Gale Force winds, are to whip across the Great Lakes Friday and into Saturday. Some of these wind gusts on Lake Superior could top out at nearly 70 mph, meaning they’d be approaching hurricane-force winds.
The waves being churched up by all this wind will be huge. The NWS meteorologists in Marquette expect waves up to 35 feet and some possibly higher on Lake Superior. That’s the same wave height as the monster storm that sent the famous Edmund Fitzgerald to the bottom in two pieces, with her 29 crew aboard, in 1975.
Waves could build to 19 feet in Lake Michigan along a stretch from Muskegon to South Haven. On Lake Huron, the biggest waves will be on the Canadian side of the lake. Lake Erie’s highest waves will be from the Cleveland area and east.
Back to Lake Superior, here’s what meteorologists from the NWS office in Marquette are forecasting:
“The wind … will be increasing to north gales Thursday night (to 51 mph), and then storm force winds (to 69 mph) through Saturday. The strong gale (to 51 mph) drops off by Sunday night. In addition to the winds, strong northerly winds will usher in cold air and a heavy freezing spray hazard and wind-driven waves in the eastern half could exceed 25 feet Saturday.”
