Wait what's this about Casey, Marc and getting kicked out of honda
ah just a fun bit of old gossip. to clarify in case the phrasing in this post was confusing, we're talking about casey's role as a test rider with honda after his retirement, so 2013-15 (not casey's initial retirement from his honda ride, which was ofc entirely his own choice)
so! first of all! from the moment casey retired, everybody was going 'when will casey be back'. this wasn't based on anything casey was actually saying - it's just how people are about retirement announcements ig, the disbelief at how early casey retired, wanting to see him race again, refusing to believe he might actually properly be done. when the riders were asked about it in pressers, they usually gave very neutral 'sure that would be nice' responses. when casey was asked about it, he was generally pretty firm in going 'I'm not interested' and also 'stop asking'. but in 2015, dani made the decision to pause his season to get an operation for his recurring severe arm pump issues. he ended up missing three races, and inevitably people went, 'hey you know who would be fun to have back for a few races, you know who also happens to be familiar with the honda bike'
and this time casey WOULD have been up for it. except, according to him, SOMEONE didn't want him to race:
Tumblr media
now fwiw, we have zero proof that this 'someone' was marc, although ofc that was something people speculated about at the time - the idea being that marc wouldn't have wanted to be undermined by casey outperforming him, especially in the context of a tricky start to the 2015 season. (funnily enough, the phrasing does echo the "somebody inside Yamaha didn't want me there" thing; a topic for another post but I'm pretty unconvinced valentino was involved in blocking casey's yamaha deal.) and... given this is the same interview where casey talks about his belief that marc forced him out of honda (which we'll get to)... I mean, he must have at least known it's a conclusion people would draw
marc was asked in pressers about casey racing as dani's replacement, and he basically stuck to 'it's not up to me'. some more casey quotes:
Tumblr media
I like to think 'I would've won that' was one of casey's main takeaways from sepang 2015
anyway at the end of 2015, casey left honda to join ducati as a test rider. here is an excerpt from a piece about it at the time, saying marc had complained about casey's performance level as a test rider:
Tumblr media
you'll note the HRC sources disagree with casey on how good casey's pace was; unfortunately we'll never really know either way. (in any case it's not particularly great form for sources to 'let slip' that your test rider's pace is poor, even if it was true, but there we are.) and ofc there's the assertion that marc felt 'threatened' by casey and/or didn't think casey's feedback was valuable. here's a screenshot of the piece from speedweek being referenced:
Tumblr media
again, a lot of this is obviously hearsay. we don't really know how hard marc pushed to get rid of casey (if at all), and certainly not for what reasons - whether it was casey being too slow or the quality of his feedback or marc's ego or whatever else. we do know casey thinks marc wanted him out because marc felt threatened by him, as he's very helpfully said as much:
Tumblr media
casey does make it clear he doesn't have any proof that marc (and his entourage) felt threatened by him, but, well. either way he did believe it. this story dropped in january 2016 btw, so at a time where press coverage of marc was not exactly at its friendliest anyway. marc hasn't really ever responded to these assertions afaik - but when casey ended up leaving ducati again at the end of 2018, he was pretty lukewarm about the idea of casey returning to honda:
Tumblr media
here too there's nothing from marc's side to suggest any real antipathy, but of course we also don't know whether he's being honest about his reasons for preferring the distinctly unthreatening bradl. and finally, casey has more recently (aka start of this year, 2024) said that he left honda because they only listened to marc:
Tumblr media
which is also obviously relevant now in the context of honda's long-term decline and marc's decision to leave (criticised in some quarters by those who feel marc is at least partly to blame for said decline)
anyway ofc this is all very he said she said, so who knows what really happened - but the fun bit is that nobody can quite agree! all a bit messy isn't it. it's very low stakes beef, kinda nice... but it does also fit in with casey's whole outlook towards the sport, where he often feels like he's being unfairly treated. and (this cannot be stressed enough) a lot of the time he was right, he was being unfairly treated, so it's absolutely possible some underhanded stuff was going on here too. believe what you will! who knows!

wanna have thoughts about Sepang pre-season testing 2015 and how that photo of the two of them wearing swim trunks happened and what else might have taken place that day/week
prompt 4! because it is my brand i must say that cal crutchlow was also there in real life for the rosquez beach date and we must never forget this. he isnt in this story but please hold that in your mind okay thank you. anyways this story is about considering what it would be like to interrogate your very sexy coworker's control issues while you are slightly sauced and neither one of you are wearing shirts. so it goes.
Vale takes a sip of his drink and looks over at Marc, sprawled out on the lounger next to him, limbs loose and easy in the glow of the sun. His swim trunks are riding up, exposing the pale, tender skin on the inside of his thighs. He's already looking at Vale.
Of course he is.
"So, you don’t like the beach?" Vale asks, to try and get his mind of something else. Marc is— Marc is competition. He shouldn't.
Marc hums. "I don’t like being in the water, it’s different."
Interesting. That's not what Vale expected.
"Why? You can swim." He's seen him in the pool earlier, hollering with his brother and dunking him under the water. Shiny and wet under the Malaysian sun.
Marc shrugs, unbothered, and Vale spends some time with the movement of his shoulders, the cut of his muscles. It's fine. Marc wont be able to see his where his eyes are lingering, anyways. Vale is wearing sunglasses. It's harmless.
"I don’t know what’s in there— I always think there’s a shark or something that's going to eat me." Marc's nose scrunches as he talks, and he looks like he's about to laugh.
"You drive motorcycles for a living," Vale replies, voice light. It seems ludicrous that Marc would be scared of something like a shark attack, with what they both do for a living. With what Marc does in particular.
Marc flicks up his sunglasses to squint at Vale, smile still huge on his face. "So do you, are you saying you aren’t scared of anything?"
"I’m not." Vale answers with a straight face.
Marc laughs. It's easy to make him laugh. "I see!"
Vale nods. "No, I’m very brave."
Marc's still laughing, strong forearm thrown over his stomach now.
Vale really shouldn't.
"But you," Vale sits up, faces towards Marc. He’s a little drunk, Vale thinks. A little pink from the sun, still pale from the winter. “You are very brave.”
"Thank you," Marc takes a long sip from his drink, lips wrapped around his straw. Jesus.
Vale shakes his head. It’s not quite a compliment. “No no no no— you take risks. Not like a normal one of us.” He flips his shades down and slumps back. Looking at Marc is maybe too much right now. “And you are scared of the ocean.”
"I don’t like flying either."
Vale blinks. "What?"
Marc shrugs, the corners of his mouth digging impishly into his cheeks. He blinks lazily, and stretches a bit. Keeps his eyes steadfastly on Vale.
"It’s all… out of my control. On the bike I can ride. I know my lines, I know when to brake, how far to lean. It’s up to me. In the sky? The ocean? It’s up to other people. It’s up to God." He shakes his head. "There's too much chance.”
Vale chews on the the inside of his cheek, turns the idea of that over in his head. "Isn’t the chance fun?" He asks. It is to him.
"No." Marc answers.
"Hm." They stay there for a second, listening to the distant crash of waves. To the unknown quantity that is the sea. Vale thinks about it. Thinks about what it means to be surprised. To lose control. To feel like he doesn't know what's going to happen next. About how Marc makes him feel like that all the time.
He really shouldn't.
"Marc?"
"Yeah?"
"Do you want to get out of here?"

Evil Malware
Welcome back to another episode of An Actual Post. As usual, no prior computer science education needed. Today I'm going to talk about the worst of the worst malware. A lot of things has happened since what the general population consider to be viruses; annoying and maybe steals some money or logins. Unfortunately it's nowadays way way way worse than that so prepare for some uncomfortable reading!
Since the dawn of Stuxnet (which I wrote about here), malware has gotten increasingly more real-life, with real-life complications. It could be the Pegasus spyware, that targets political activists in authoritarian regimes, or disruptive infections that put a stop to Copenhagens metro trains for a few hours. But we're merely in the beginning, because in the last few years, some nasty shit has been going down. I'm going to write about two (technically three but I'll group the first two together for obvious reasons) of the worst incidents we've seen today.
BlackEnergy and CrashOverride
This piece of malware has been around since early 2000's, for the intention of creating DDoS attacks (which I wrote about here) from infected computers. It has since then branched out in its usage, particularly into targeting infrastructure environments. Most notable is the 2015 Ukrainian powergrid incident, which occured when the Russian hacking group known as "Sandworm", infected three Ukrainian energy companies, wiping out systems and causing a power outage for over 250 000 households during winter. The attack began with just one infected document being opened in the affected companies. When BlackEnergy infected their systems, it opened up a remote connection to the attackers, making them able to control the entire powergrid opreation from inside Russia, and thereby switching it off.
That was not enough though, as the attackers also implanted another piece of malicious software known as KillDisk, which wiped out many of the ciritical operation systems, as well as cutting off the connection to the UPS units, which are backup generators in case of system outage. To add a cherry on top, BlackEnergy did what it was originally intended to do - DDoS attacks - towards the energy companies call-centers, so that customers were not able to call and ask what was happening.
The Ukrainian powergrid is quite outdated, which made the attack easier, but it was also the saving grace, as they still had manual power-switches (as opposed to purely digital, which were under the attackers control), so power was eventually restored before they had to rebuild all of their digital systems. This is more concerning for countries with modern powergrids, as manual switches have all been replaced by only digital, meaning power restoration could take weeks or months in case of a similar attack.
Besides the energy companies, three other critical Ukrainian infrastructure organisations were hit by BlackEnergy, but did not result in any operational outages.
But it didn't stop there. Just one year later, in December 2016, a similar attack struck Kiev, successfully taking down one-fifth of the countrys electrical power. Like with the BlackEnergy incident, it was quite quickly restored, but there was a far more horrifying infection this time. Named CrashOverride, the malware was much more sophisticated than BlackEnergy, did more things automatically without the need of input from a remote attacker. It was also modular, meaning that functionalities could just be added to it like lego-pieces, adapting it to whatever kind of electrical grid it was entering. This meant that it wouldn't just be able to infect only Ukranian electrical grids, but just about any country's. Furthermore, evidence points to the 2016 CrashOverride infection only being a test-run.
Triton
Last but definitely not least - Triton, the first (known) malware designed to kill.
But before we talk about it, we need to look at what happened in Bhopal, India in 1984 when what has since been considered the worst industrial disaster of all time occured. At the Union Carbide India Limited pesticide plant in December 2nd, one of the gas tanks had a fatal malfunction, creating a massive gas leak of methyl isocyanate, which is extremely toxic. The leak spread to the surrounding city of Bhopal, resulting in almost 600 000 injured people, 40 000 temporary injuries, 4 000 permanent or severe injuries and over 8 000 people died within the first two weeks, with an estimated additional 8 000 deaths following due to injuries in the time after.
This was of course not caused by Triton, but it became the inspiration for the creation of the malware In 2017, a new piece of malware was discovered in Schneider Electrics industrial control system (called Triconex) at a Saudi Arabian petrochemical facility, which unravelled a horrible and complex secret. The infection chain for Triton contains many steps, so let's start with a brief overview of what the Triconex ICS and SIS is. ICS (Industrial Control System) are computers that handles all the industrial processes, computers that are programmed to do one thing and one specific thing only, unlike our regular PCs which you can play games or surf the internet and whatever. ICS will be computers who control valves, releases chemicals into vats, spins stuff around, or whatever automated processes may happen at an industrial facility.
SIS (Safety Instrumented System) are a kind of ICS that are responsible to check that everything is going alright and, if needed, will take over the process in case some ICS is failing and may result in damage, fire, injury or other disasters. So a SIS are monitoring failsafes, meant to prevent what happened in Bhopal.
Unless, of course, you program a malware intended to make the SIS malfunction.
What happened in the Saudi Arabian petrochemical facility started as follows:
The attackers successfully implanted a remote access trojan, which just like in the BlackEnergy case, makes the attackers able to control infected machines remotely. However, you can't infect a ICS or SIS this way, you need to enter a regular computer with internet access first, which is what they did. The initial machine was an engineering station, on which ICS and SIS computers are controlled. From there, the attackers wanted to plant their own software on the ICS and SIS machines, but there was a problem; the software can't be installed without someone turning a physical key on the Triconex devices, as a security measure. A second problem is that every time new software changes are made to a Triconex device, the old software will be deleted and replaced entirely by the new, which meant that the malware was at risk of being deleted if any engineer made any software changes.
So a second piece of Triton malware was made to overcome those hurdles. Instead of being save where the software should be saved in the Triconex devices, it saved itself where the firmware was installed (the piece of software that's made to have the Triconex work as opposed to where the software that tells the Triconex what to do), this not only gave Triton persistence even if new software was loaded, but also overrides the physical key as firmware always has administrator privileges. With all this in place, the attacker could execute any commands at the comfort of their home to both the ICS and SIS systems in the facility.
As luck would have it, before the attackers were able to cause any harm, the facility experienced a safety incident, prompting shutdown of the whole operation, and an investigation later uncovered the malware in the systems. Had Triton not been discovered in time, it would have been able to cause catastrophic failures similar to what happened in Bhopal. But just because it was thwarted this time, doesn't mean it's gone for good. There will always be some actor who is willing to try again.
Thank you for reading and sorry if I scared you, but honestly I think people need to be aware of the situation, as for some bisarre reason, events like these are not reported in the news. If you have any questions, feel free to send an ask!

An introduction to VR multiple units, part 2: Sm3
The Sm3 Pendolino. Sähkömato (electric worm) or muovipulkka (plastic sleigh). The temperamental italian lady. Our only actual high-speed train so far. Fast and beautiful – but also unreliable and gives an uncomfortable ride.
Tumblr media
An Sm3 at Seinäjoki station, summer 2023, on a decidedly non-high speed connecting service between Seinäjoki and Vaasa – a line which has a 120 km/h speed limit. My photo.
The story of the Sm3 begins in the early 1990s, when our leaders decided we needed high-speed trains to compete with flying and cars, but they didn't want to invest in actual high-speed lines. The answer was a body-tilting train, which supposedly could operate on existing tracks on higher speeds. At the time, there were three options of these in production: the Italian Pendolino, the Swedish X2000 and the Spanish Talgo Pendular. The Pendolino was already in service (unlike the X2000, which would have otherwise probably been a better choice, being designed for similar weather conditions) and it was cheaper than the Talgo Pendular. Thus in 1992 we ordered two six-carriage Pendolino sets, with options for 23 additional sets.
The Finnish Pendolino, later designated Sm3, was not in fact based on an existing design, but a sister class of the Italian ETR 460, which only entered in service in 1994, the same year the first Pendolino set arrived in Finland for testing.
Tumblr media
A pair of Sm3's at Helsinki central station in the original livery, summer 2010. My photo.
The first two Sm3's entered service between Helsinki and Turku in late 1995. Although the reasoning for buying them was that they could operate without the need to build new high-speed lines, much of the rail line between Helsinki and Turku had to be rebuilt to accommodate the new trains. After just three months, the Sm3's had to be withdrawn from service due to not coping with Finnish winter. While the problems were mostly solved, the Sm3 was have remained problematic through-out their entire careers.
Despite the issues during testing, in 1997 VR ordered eight additional six-carriage sets, which were delivered in 2000-2002. Eight more were ordered in 2002, and delivered in 2004-2006, bringing the total number built to 18.
The original plan was for the Sm3's to be able to operate at speeds of up to 250 km/h. In practice the top speed proved 220 km/h, and it could be achieved only on specifically-built high-speed tracks between Kerava and Lahti (opened in 2006). While on the route between Helsinki and Turku travel time was supposed to be cut to less than 1½ hours, this was never achieved. The body-tilting system, which was to make the high speeds possible, never worked properly and in the end we decided to simply lock them permanently in upright position. With the arrival of the double-decker Intercity carriages, which could be operated at speeds up to 200 km/h, today the Pendolino's operate according to the same timetables as the Intercities.
Tumblr media
Interior of the second-class section of an Sm3. My photo from 2014.
Of the six carriages of a Pendolino set, carriage 1 was originally a first-class car (after 2006 ekstra class) with a meeting room at one end. Carriages 2 and 4-6 are second (eko) class ones, white carriage 3 is the restaurant car. Carriage 2 has seats and a toilet for disabled passengers (however, the wheelchair lift is in carriage 3), while carriage 6 has a compartment for passengers with pets.
The two prototype units, 7001 and 7002, were somewhat different from the mass-produced ones, and the 7002 was withdrawn from service in 2015 as a source of spare parts for the 7001. However, the 7001 was also withdrawn in 2021.
Units 7013 and 7016 crashed at Tampered station in December 2021. Both were seriously damaged, and the decision was taken to use the undamaged carriages of both units to create a single working six-carriage unit. Thus only 15 Sm3 Pendolinos remain in service today.
There has been some talk that the new Sm7 units could replace the Sm3's when delivered... but the Sm7's top speed of only 160 km/h makes a direct replacement unlikely.

ch. 113
I do have a serious family emergency going on IRL at the moment. But wouldn't you know it, the chapter is the day before I have to make a trip about it. So I can have a brief respite from scary & stressful things....
Tumblr media
we see Amane at the 81st annual festival. Our current festival is the 113th. the Amane we see here would be ~27. (remember, Amane would be ~60 years old if he were alive in the 'present' of JSHK, which is 2015)
so, we finally see 1:1, precisely the boy in the 'corrected' timeline'
and he looks-- LIKE THIS??????????????????
Tumblr media
in THIS timeline, Amane feels in-control, he's humming or whistling, he's pleased to hear Tsukasa's rumor play out???!?!????!?!??
WHAT DID YOU DO!!!!! WHAT DID YOU DO?!?!? what did you do--!! what did you do--!!!!!!! This is the last thing I expected for you, what, you're in a great mood. Your brother seems to be some sort of cursed school-bound ghost. A good day for you, Amane-sensei?!?!?!?!? What did you do!!!!!
In every timeline, Amane really is crazy! Amazing! Do you always manage some sort of control over Tsukasa's fate, no matter what!?
Tumblr media
I DON'T KNOW, AIDAIRO-SENSEI!!! you were right, this month's Hanako-kun is unbearable!!!!
Tumblr media
ah, was it that simple all along... lol. just keeping her informed... you not only kept Nene-chan in the dark unnecessarily and had to explain yourself twice, you also made us sit through 2 chapters for the basic run-down, Teru....
it's such an interesting situation....!
Tumblr media
It would be impossible for just anyone to pinpoint even the year of the Clockkeeper's interference... let alone the exact altercation they interrupted. Someone would have to have quite intimate knowledge of, specifically the Yugi twins history, to even start looking.
And even so, you've also got to avoid the Clockkeepers just fixing it again, or nipping at you, right? I wonder if we'll have to essentially... go back, instigate events with the Yugi which result in our yorishiro Tsukasa ... and then ... peel the Clockkeeper's yorishiro, to de-power them, and usurp control for ourselves over the timeline? It's so hard to imagine a world where we can let the Clockkeepers remain in any power, if we want to have 'control' ....
but can Nene-chan peel yorishiro, anymore? I wonder if she would need to form a contract with someone else to be granted that right, in this world.... ♥..... well, getting ahead of ourselves... but that would be fun.... I think so, anyway....
Tumblr media
so interesting! I wonder if, in this world, Akane even typically called her 'Ao-chan'? That's such an affectionate/familiar nickname.... it would be surprising from someone you're not super close with....
and the implication seems to be that Aoi and Teru have been more familiar SINCE childhood, not just now... so Akane's been completely booted in some capacity... if she's been referring to Teru in such a familiar way since childhood, this arrangement may have happened quite early on....
Tumblr media
he was interrupted for a bit, but he does get to say it out loud in full here. I wonder if compulsively letting this slip will seed something in Aoi's mind....
I've always been worried about Teru's interest in Aoi, what with their families histories... I've worried it has less to do with legitimate interest and more to do with, I don't know... power levels, bloodline, maintaining something or correcting something... it just doesn't pass my smell test. An arranged marriage is very bad news!
Tumblr media
I feel so dumb for missing this LOL!!!!!!!!!!
I'm sure our Ao-chan is on her way to remembering her true love....
Tumblr media
briefly distracted by Tsutsu's tits....
Tumblr media
noting the room number in case that becomes relevant later lol....
Tumblr media
this is so extremely creepypasta vibes... AidaIro-sensei are in their creepypasta era right now....
UUUGH. IT'S SO EXCRUCIATINGLY EXCITING....
Tumblr media
I saw someone joking that it's "like a gatcha", which Tsukasa are we going to get? Shosei-outfit boy? Summer uniform boy? Winter? 3 year old?????????????????????????? what Tsukasa is HERE?????? We don't even understand yet why our 'Amane' is in his winter uniform or called 'Hanako-san'! THIS TSUKASA COULD BE ANYTHIIIING--!!!
and a reminder that a 'rumor' is not necessarily a school Mystery (the confession tree was a rumor!)... mysteries are specific pillars of God appointed in some way into their position, with a yorishiro. Tsukasa could be a fully-fledged mystery, orrrrr he could be a weaker rumor!
EITHER WAY, WE'LL HAVE TO ASK HIM QUESTIONS, WON'T WE.........!!!!!! Come onnnnnnnnnnnnn Nene-chan!!!! I want to hear her summon Tsukasa just like she once did Hanako--!!!!!! RAAAHHH !! I want to know if he'd remember/recognize her or not...!!! UUUU
it's so crazy and exciting! AidaIro-sensei are too good at it all... I couldn't have ever imagined this Amane-sensei ah, smiling, crazily while girls summon his otouto to play....? why and how is Tsukasa a rumor... what happened to him in life to make his name famous... why is he in the modern-day more known than 'Amane' was..... ??? I'm scared for my life! Next month can never come fast enough....

SpaceTime -- A brief history
SpaceTime is Australia’s most popular and respected astronomy and space science news program – averaging over two million downloads every year. We’re also number five in the United States.  The show reports on the latest stories and discoveries making news in astronomy, space flight, and science.  SpaceTime features weekly interviews with leading Australian scientists about their research.  The show began life in 1995 as ‘StarStuff’ on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s (ABC) NewsRadio network.  Award winning investigative reporter Stuart Gary created the program during more than fifteen years as NewsRadio’s evening anchor and Science Editor.  Gary’s always loved science. He studied astronomy at university and was invited to undertake a PHD in astrophysics, but instead focused on his career in journalism and radio broadcasting. He worked as an announcer and music DJ in commercial radio, before becoming a journalist and eventually joining ABC News and Current Affairs. Later, Gary became part of the team that set up ABC NewsRadio and was one of its first presenters. When asked to put his science background to use, Gary developed StarStuff which he wrote, produced and hosted, consistently achieving 9 per cent of the national Australian radio audience based on the ABC’s Nielsen ratings survey figures for the five major Australian metro markets: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Perth.  The StarStuff podcast was published on line by ABC Science -- achieving over 1.3 million downloads annually.  However, after some 20 years, the show finally wrapped up in December 2015 following ABC funding cuts, and a redirection of available finances to increase sports and horse racing coverage.  Rather than continue with the ABC, Gary resigned so that he could keep the show going independently.  StarStuff was rebranded as “SpaceTime”, with the first episode being broadcast in February 2016.  Over the years, SpaceTime has grown, more than doubling its former ABC audience numbers and expanding to include new segments such as the Science Report -- which provides a wrap of general science news, weekly skeptical science features, special reports looking at the latest computer and technology news, and Skywatch – which provides a monthly guide to the night skies. The show is published three times weekly (every Monday, Wednesday and Friday) and available from the United States National Science Foundation on Science Zone Radio, and through both i-heart Radio and Tune-In Radio.

ARTICLE: "Driver Profile: Charles Leclerc" (Formula Scout, 2015)
PaddockScout profiles Charles Leclerc, the young man from Monaco tearing up the FIA F3 European Championship with two wins from the first two rounds.
Tumblr media
Monaco plays host to probably the most famous of any Formula 1 race each year but, perhaps unsurprisingly for a microstate of less than 40,000 people, it doesn’t have a history of producing its own successful Formula 1 drivers. Louis Chiron won his home race in 1931 but since his last participation in 1958 (the oldest ever F1 driver at 58), only Olivier Beretta in 1994 has represented Monaco in an F1 race. Clivio Piccione and Stefano Coletti have won in GP2 since then, but didn’t make it to the top level.
Charles Leclerc is only 17 but he is probably Monaco’s best chance yet of repeating Chiron’s home streets victory. A long-time protege of F1 driver manager Nicolas Todt, Leclerc was a star in karting and has had no trouble adapting to single-seaters, impressing in Formula Renault 2.0 last year and now taking up the mantle of being the star rookie in European F3. A winner on his debut at Silverstone, he added a second victory at Hockenheim last weekend and is just five points off the standings lead.
A quick history (so far)
Leclerc’s father Herve was a Formula 3 driver in the 1980s, and Charles began karting at the circuit owned by Philippe Bianchi, the father of Jules. Working his way up the ranks, Leclerc was French was French cadet champion in 2009 and the runner-up in KF3 and the Monaco Junior Kart Cup winner in 2010.
The following year, he claimed a CIK-FIA double, winning the Academy Trophy and the KF3 World Cup. Moving up to KF2 for 2012, Leclerc triumphed in the WSK Euro Series and took second in the European and U18 championships.
Tumblr media
Together with Max Verstappen, Leclerc took part in the KZ gearbox classes for his final year in karting in 2013, winning the Winter Cup and finishing second to his Dutch rival in the world championship.
Leclerc entered Formula Renault 2.0 for his rookie single-season season, embarking on the Alps series for Fortec Motorsports. He quickly became a frontrunner, making the podium at round two at Pau and then twice again at Spa. At Monza he won both races, and followed that with more podiums to secure second place in the championship behind third-year FR2.0 racer Nyck de Vries.
Some of Leclerc’s most impressive performances last year came in Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 as a guest entry. He took part in six races and finished second in the last three of those, up against lots of drivers with multiple years of experience in the series.
He could have made the full-time move to the Eurocup for 2015 but instead stepped up to Formula 3, and after testing for several different teams, signed with Van Amersfoort Racing. He would essentially replace Verstappen as team leader, working with the same engineer Rik Vernooij.
Leclerc was rapid in testing and demonstrated his pace on his debut weekend at Silverstone, scoring a double position and winning the final race of the weekend. At round two at Hockenheim he extended his podium streak to five consecutive races, and defeated F3 veteran Felix Rosenqvist in a battle for victory in the wet in race three.
Up next
Leclerc is just five points behind championship leader Antonio Giovinazzi, and so far he’s only raced on circuits he hadn’t competed at before. Next up on the calendar are Pau, Monza and Spa, and he tasted success at all of those last season. Therefore, it stands to reason that there’s yet more to come from Leclerc.
It’s a long season (there are 33 races) and plenty could happen between now and the F3 paddock returning to Hockenheim on the weekend of Leclerc’s 18 birthday in October. But based upon the first two rounds, there’s no reason to think of Leclerc as anything other than a serious title threat. Beating the more experienced Rosenqvist and Giovinazzi – driving for bigger teams in Prema and Carlin respectively – will take some doing, but he’s already given them a hard time. Anyway, his season’s hardly going to be a failure if he loses out and finishes up third as a rookie.
Talent and potential
Tumblr media
Leclerc marked himself out as a real prospect in karting – so much so he topped our 2012 ‘karters to watch‘ feature, ahead of Verstappen. But it’s never a foregone conclusion that a successful karter will make a successful car racer. His debut season in FR2.0 was in some ways fairly low key with ‘only’ two wins, but the jump up from karting to continental FR2.0 is very rarely made to look easy by anybody. Leclerc ultimately finished as high up in the Alps standings as he could have been realistically expected to do so, given the presence of an on-form de Vries. It was actually up against tougher competition in the Eurocup that he really shone, with three consecutive P2s taking quite some doing in a series where nobody was particularly consistent.
Those performances suggested he would be capable of stepping up to F3, particularly as his old rival Verstappen had made it look easy and didn’t have the benefit of a year of car racing experience. And so he has proven to be. It’s still early days, but Leclerc has so far been the class of a large crop of rookies and taken the fight to proven F3 winners with multiple years of experience already under their belt.
His early performances are on a par with what last year’s star rookies Esteban Ocon and Verstappen were doing – in fact, his record of two wins and five podiums from the first six races replicates the 2014 champion’s start. If he keeps it up, he will deserve to be held in the same high esteem as them a few months down the line.
Off-track
No doubt assisted by the Bianchis’ tutelage, Leclerc signed with Todt Jr’s All Road Management firm in 2011. At present, Leclerc has no ties to F1 teams, but through his work with Felipe Massa, Pastor Maldonado and Bianchi, Todt has dealt with most of them and will be very well-placed to get his protege a role when the time comes.
A potential stumbling point is that most F1 teams are already overflowing with some serious sub-F1 prospects, but if he continues to impress as he’s doing at the moment, they could begin falling over each other to find a space for him.
Funding-wise, Leclerc benefits from partners usually tied to Todt’s projects, and watch maker Richard Mille (currently a sponsor of the Lotus F1 team) is his loyal main backer. And you’d imagine that being billed as a future F1 star from Monaco could well tempt some further future investment.
Verdict
In just his second season in single-seaters, Leclerc is quickly marking himself out as a star of the future with fine performances and two wins in his first couple of weekends in European F3, making him seriously stand out from a large and competitive grid.
While he’s got plenty in common with his old karting rival and Van Amersfoort F3 predecessor Verstappen, a lesser reputation and sensible management mean he’s unlikely to be making the jump straight up to F1 next year. He will therefore need to sustain this impressive form into an intermediate category like GP2 in order to make the grade.
But the signs are definitely there that Leclerc is one of the very top talents in the junior ranks right now, and that he’s capable of tasting success in F1 in the future.
His lifelong friend Bianchi was so sadly stopped in his tracks last year just when his F1 future was looking promising. In a few years’ time, Leclerc could just pick up where his mentor left off.

Sooty grouse used to be called blue grouse. After DNA testing, blue grouse were split into two groups; dusky grouse inland and sooty grouse in the coastal mountain ranges. Found from California to Alaska, the sooty grouse, Dendragapus fuliginosus, is a chicken-like bird with short legs and a medium length tail. Both male and female birds are camouflaged in brown, black, gray and white, but the males are a bit more gray and have yellow eye combs and yellow air sacs on their necks.
Tumblr media
In the summer, you might see and more often hear these birds in the subalpine areas of the park. They take advantage of the leaves, flowers and berries that are available in these environments for summer feasting while the young feed more on insects. But come winter, it’s time for change. The sooty grouse move into the deeper, denser forests. Throughout the colder months, these grouse feed on the needles of the douglas-firs, as well as other conifers like fir, pine and hemlock.
Tumblr media
In winter, for sooty grouse, it pays to follow the food. Have you seen or heard the calls of sooty grouse in the park? Where have you seen or heard them? ~ams

Apparently Wanda and Pietro were in Hydra’s clutches for over a year, and practically all of that was after they were outed to the world
According to the MCU wiki (which should be taken with a grain of salt):
January 6th 2014: Dr. List does his recruiting sweep in Novi Grad where Wanda and Pietro are recruited
January 12th 2014: the battle at the Triskelion happens and Hydra is revealed to the world
January 15th 2014: the actual experiments on Wanda and Pietro are carried out
January 19th 2014: the Winter Soldier mid-credit scene where Strucker and List talk about their operation takes place
April 28th 2015: the Avengers raid Strucker’s base
Even though Wanda and Pietro were recruited just before the SHIELD data dump happened, that still means they were with Hydra for an entire year after it was revealed to the world.
I suppose the question of how long they were with Hydra was always sitting in the back of my mind, but this has brought it to the forefront. Did the twins actually spend that entire year in complete ignorance of what Hydra was? How would that even be possible? They can’t have just been sitting in cells all day, so did Hydra ever train them? If so, who were Wanda’s powers tested on?
I suppose it’s entirely possible that Strucker and List deliberately kept the twins in the dark about Hydra by making sure they never learned about the data dump, but again, that’s my own headcanon talking, not the story itself.
To be fair, I don’t have much knowledge about the nature of censorship, especially when it comes to something on this scale, but is it really feasible that Strucker and his men were able to keep not just the twins, but Novi Grad as a whole from learning what they were?
Now in Wanda and Pietro’s defense if the worst is true, knowing what Hydra is and being loyal to Hydra are not the same thing. It’s entirely possible that at some point the twins did find out who their caregivers were, but considering they probably didn’t think themselves able to fight their way out, and that this bunker was, for the time being at least, keeping them safe, they stayed against their better judgement. But still, we’ve been claiming for a long time that they had no idea what it was at all, but in leiu of any sort of on-screen realization, we’re left with nothing but speculation.
It’s entirely a moot point to be discussing this at all, as narratively this was forever ago, and hopefully it will never be brought up again outside of hate-fic.
[In fairness, I find the idea that Winter Soldier is meant to take place in January completely ludicrous, so again, take all this with a grain of salt.]

Magpies - Two
Tumblr media
Pairings: Bucky Barnes x reader
Summary: Bucky remembers (only slightly) what his ma used to say about magpies - and it's something Y/N even said. Suddenly, Bucky's relationship with Y/N was a test of the magpies' poem. But he knew they would get out on the other side, alive and together.

Series Masterlist | Main Masterlist
Tumblr media
2015, Bucharest, Romania
Eventually, Bucky found himself in Romania and was able to find an empty apartment to stay in for a while.
Every day he was slowly getting his memory back, his mother, Rebecca, a smaller Steve and a woman who he called ‘doll’ - but Bucky guessed it wasn’t her name.
The woman who took most of his dreams seemed like a very important person to him before his time as the Winter Soldier.
Tumblr media
He would go out and get more plums (Bucky has a faint memory of his ma telling him that plums help with people's memories).
He was standing in the market, looking over the plums, when out of the corner of his eye he sees the hair from his dreams.
The hair, the nose, even her ears.
Y/N... she was, alive?
He slowly walked over to her. “Doll?” He gently asked, as the woman he spoke to turned around.
It was Y/N, she was alive!
“Bucky?” She questioned, walking over to him, through the slight crowd and to him.
The closer that she got, the more recognisable that she became. This was the girl from his dreams, the girl from the 40s, the girl (as he can remember from one of his memories), his fiancée.
She soon as she was within touching distance, Y/N reached over and wrapped her arms around his neck, holding on as tight as she could - as if he was going to disappear before her eyes.

Cattle and mud
Dee Griffin, a feedlot veterinarian in Nebraska states that 11 cm (4 in.) of mud reduces weight gain (Dee Griffin, Great Plains Veterinary Educational Center, Clay Center, Nebraska, personal communication, 2016). Dikeman and Lawrence (1997) and Degen and Young (1995) both report that cold, wet muddy cattle may have higher energy requirements and the effort to walk through mud may affect feedlot performance. Mud will increase the cost of weight gain (Mader, 2011). According to Chris Reinhardt from Kansas State University, deep mud of over 30 cm (12 in.) inches will increase feed conversion by 25% (Thomas, 2013). Sweeten et al. (2014) states that 11 to 20 cm (4 to 8 in.) of mud will increase feed conversion by 13% and decrease feed intake from 8% to 15%. There is lack of peer reviewed scientific studies on the effects of mud on beef cattle housed in outdoor feedlots. Most of the available information for beef cattle is in extension publications, livestock magazines, or is based on practical experience (Thomas, 2013; Sweeten et al., 2014). There is some scientific literature is on dairy cows. Dairy cows prefer to lay on dry sawdust compared to wet sawdust, and they also prefer to lie on dry surfaces (Fregonesi et al., 2007, Tucker et al., 2015). Grandin, T. (2016). Evaluation of the welfare of cattle housed in outdoor feedlot pens. Veterinary and Animal Science, 1-2, 23–28. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.vas.2016.11.001
---
Wet, muddy, or hard surfaces impact the lying behaviours of dairy cows through reducing total lying times (Chen et al., 2017, Hendriks et al., 2019, Herlin, 1997, Schütz et al., 2019), reduced number of lying bouts (Chen et al., 2017, Haley et al., 2001, Hendriks et al., 2019, Fisher et al., 2003), and altered lying position (Chen et al., 2017, Schütz et al., 2019, Tucker et al., 2007). When prevented from lying, cattle have an increased risk of lameness (Thomsen et al., 2012) and disruption to the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (Fisher et al., 2002). The impacts of posture on cow comfort and quality of rest and/or sleep are yet to be determined, however it is thought a lying posture with a relaxed neck is required for cattle to engage in REM sleep (Hunter et al., 2021, Ruckebusch, 1972, Ternman et al., 2014). Despite a similar percent of observations of lying in the feedlot compared to the pasture for both pad scores 1 and 3, the number of lying bouts was higher in the feedlot, indicating that bout duration was shorter. This suggests decreased comfort, potentially impacting quality of rest and/or sleep. For pad score 5 treatment, both number of lying bouts and time periods where lying was observed were reduced in the feedlot, showing a clear impact on lying behaviours. Therefore, mud may impact lying behaviour in different ways, depending on its depth, and continuous housing under these conditions may reduce welfare if a more suitable surface is not provided. Increasing levels of mud did not influence cattle preferences for the feedlot or pasture environment when tested under relatively warm weather conditions. Overall, cattle preferred the pasture environment at all pad scores, especially when tested in the afternoon. However, even with high mud levels, cattle chose to enter the feedlot and therefore it appears that the grain-based feed was a greater attractant over any negative aspects of the feedlot. Despite this, high levels of mud reduced both lying time and number of lying bouts in the feedlot and was accompanied by an increase in these behaviours in the paddock, indicating that animal comfort and welfare may have been reduced under these muddy conditions. The main limitation of the current study is that it was not performed during winter, in which the cold and muddy conditions may increase thermoregulatory load and further influence environment choice and behaviours. Dickson, E. J., Campbell, D. L. M., Monk, J. E., Lea, J. M., Colditz, I. G., & Lee, C. (2022). Increasing mud levels in a feedlot influences beef cattle behaviours but not preference for feedlot or pasture environments. Applied Animal Behaviour Science, 254, 105718. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.applanim.2022.105718
---
Cattle spent less time lying down in muddier conditions, especially in the first 24 h of exposure, when cows and heifers spent only 3.2 and 5.8 h, respectively, lying down in the muddiest treatment compared with 12.5 and 12.7 h on dry soil. When the soil was dry, cattle never chose to lie down on concrete, but in muddier conditions they spent a greater proportion of their lying time on concrete (mean ± SE: 56 ± 14 and 10 ± 8% in the very muddy and muddy treatments, respectively). The shift in lying location was more marked for heifers, and all 6 spent ≥87% of their lying time on concrete in the muddiest treatment. When cattle chose to lie down on wetter soil, they limited the surface area exposed to their surroundings by tucking their legs beneath their bodies (mean ± SE: 30 ± 11, 15 ± 4, and 5 ± 2% of lying observations in the very muddy, muddy, and dry treatments, respectively). Despite cattle spending less time on wetter soil, all 3 measured body parts became dirtier in muddier conditions (1.4-, 1.6-, and 1.8-fold more on the leg, udder, and side, respectively, in the muddiest compared with the driest treatment). In addition, higher soil moisture levels resulted in greater reductions in white blood cell counts relative to baseline levels (−0.95, −0.43, and 0.34 × 109/L relative to baseline levels in the very muddy, muddy, and dry treatments). Muddy conditions, even in the absence of wind or rain, are aversive for cattle and have negative implications for their welfare. In the final 24 h of treatment, cattle spent less time lying in muddier conditions and spent more time standing without feeding (Table 4). The amount of time cattle spent feeding did not differ across levels of soil moisture, and we observed no effects of parity and no parity × treatment interactions (F1, 22 ≤ 1.7, P ≥ 0.207). The average amount of time cattle spent in various areas of the pen in each treatment is depicted in Figure 3. In muddier conditions, the proportion of time cattle spent on soil decreased and the proportion on concrete increased (treatment F1, 22 = 23.9, P < 0.001; Figure 4A). This pattern was more marked for heifers than for cows (parity × treatment interaction F1, 22 = 7.2, P = 0.014), because the former spent a greater proportion of their time on concrete (parity F1, 22 = 9.2, P = 0.006). Chen, J. M., Stull, C. L., Ledgerwood, D. N., & Tucker, C. B. (2017). Muddy conditions reduce hygiene and lying time in dairy cattle and increase time spent on concrete. Journal of Dairy Science, 100(3), 2090–2103. https://doi.org/10.3168/jds.2016-11972

Within 30 m of the water tank, concentrations of feces and urine from three warm-season observations were significantly greater than concentrations during three cool-season observations. Percentages of defecations and urinations on the pasture, feeding, and milking areas were highly correlated (r > 0.90) with time spent in those areas. Pasture-based systems could reduce manure handling and storage requirements proportional to the time cattle are on pastures. Manure on the pasture was evenly distributed, except around the water tank during warm-weather grazings. Results indicate that pasture-based dairy systems may require smaller, less-expensive manure management systems compared with confinement dairy farms. White, S. L., Sheffield, R. E., Washburn, S. P., King, L. D., & Green, J. T. (2001). Spatial and time distribution of dairy cattle excreta in an intensive pasture system. GAMEREACTOR Finland reviews Goodbye Volcano High!!
By Petter Lundberg. Some translated highlights:
Goodbye Volcano High and the musical apocalypse. -Along with surprises like Dave the Diver and Viewfinder, Goodbye Volcano High from the KO_OP game house deserves its share of the spotlight. -Goodbye Volcano High follows the adventures of Fang, who is celebrating their senior year, in a world where dinosaur characters sketched as humans are facing a new one. Strange phenomena interfering with cell phone networks plague the activities of Fang and their friends, even though their thoughts wander beyond the everyday mundanities. -Planning further studies and piloting the band that Fang founded with their friends in the pits of the talent competition take surprising turns in the game adventure, which combines the text-driven storytelling of visual novel games and the relaxed music playing of rhythm games, mainly with pleasant results. -The story, which creates fear and tension towards an uncertain future, strongly reminds me of the indie adventure Season: A Letter to the Future (2023), which deals with the same themes. -In the spirit of the Life Is Strange game series (2015-), Goodbye Volcano High, which combines pop indie rock and interpersonal twists, relies on excellently animated scenes in its narration. The colorful Game World and the personable characters look like a modern Netflix animated series at its best, which would be fine to stream. -The excellent sound show and the music side make sure that Goodbye Volcano High is quite an interesting whole in terms of audiovisual talent. You can get a feel for the music composed by Omar Dabbous with the help of rhythm mini-games, which undoubtedly surprise you with their pace. -Goodbye Volcano High offers a special and interesting game experience for the winter days of the beginning of the year. -Above all, those who enjoyed the games of the Life Is Strange series should take the introductions of Fang and their partners to the test if the time starts to get long while waiting for the next Life Is Strange.
