5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

Yes always, I dropped out of the habbit when I first got back into fic writing but picked it up again and now I respond to every comment because if someone is going to take the time out of their day to say they appreciated my work you can bet I'm paying that kindness back!

6. What’s the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

Currently Somnia, though whenever I fall at your feet, won't you let your tears rain down on me? comes a strong second and is probably the angstier overall

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Probably Rings or Back of Beyond. Rings is the one where I really put the work into getting Megamind and Roxanne to a place where they were both happy and wanted to be together, so I can see it contnuing happily even after I finished writing.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

Not really, got flamed a time or two in the ff.net days. The occasional person who doesn't really think

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Oh I absolutely do! I love writing smut. I love how much storytelling you can put into smut. You can get SO MUCH character work into smut just by how the characters are connecting.

My absolute favourite is the tension got to much and we HAD to break smut, because there is so much gooey deliciousness I absolutely do not write in the mornings after, where the sex comes easy but the feelings are locked behind a dozen doors.

All my smut tends to involve tentacles or some version of fuckery. The last time I wrote fic that just had a standard dick I think I struggled! XD

10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?

Does roleplay in the DBCA mansion count? Not really, though Nails kind of crosses over with Round the Twist. I'd love to write a PacRim crossover someday though.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Doubt it, though I've never really looked and it wouldn't surprise me if some dickhead scraped my fic for AI.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

Yes! I've had a couple of fans translate one or two of my Megamind fics into Russian.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Not yet, though I think I'd like to. Dal and I have bounced ideas back and forth a few times and I did scoop and drop all of our Megamind accidentally swears a bluestreak in front of Roxanne but she just laughs at him idea into a google doc that i wil someday get around to opening.

14. What’s your all-time favourite ship?

Just one? I mean my ship is more of a theme of dramatic bastard in a big cape and the equally dramatic person constantly needling them back. Ideal OTP is Rick/Evey from The Mummy

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?

I really REALLY want to write the florist/tattoo parlour Megarox fic but I have literally no idea what to do with it so it will remain a collection of unrelated scenes forever probably, alas.

16. What are your writing strengths?

Dialogue. I love writing exchanges between people, especially when they get to be snarky with each other. I feel like I'm pretty good at smut but everyone's mileage varies on that one.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Action scenes. I hate them, I'll take any opportunity to avoid writing fight scenes.

I'm also a wordy fucking bitch so I take forever to get to scenes that readers are begging for if I feel like the story isn't there yet.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

I'm not bilingual so its something I would need to do with a translator and probably would't flow well.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Star Wars. I wanted to impress Grand Admiral Thrawn SO MUCH as a nine year old (still do tbh)

20. Favourite fic you’ve ever written?

Ahaha it changes depending on which one I'm working on. Topsy is up there but Ricochet, Recoil, Rebound is one I can always go back to with joy.

The Grey, WIP: 7/10/23

I need to do a bit more with her hair, but mostly it's done. Just barely started on her hands. I wish I could've done more, but I didn't have much time today.

I need to finish her hair, hands, flames and robe. The robe is pretty much the color I want it to be, it just needs texture. I'm not going to leave the lines. Those were always temporary.

Had a moment of panic when my computer malfunctioned. Tuned out I just needed to reboot it. Took the time to back up all of my files on a flash drive. I'd hate to lose all of my work. This is one of the main reasons I hope to someday put all my artwork into a book.

The end result I plan is go lineless.

6. Which complete fic do you wish had gotten more attention?

Oh boy tough questions and hard answers. I write mainly about a rare pair that isn't everyone's cup of tea so I can't really answer this. Like any creator on here any attention is fuel for the soul and since I thrive on positive reinforcement most likely to my own detriment any sort of recognition is kerosene to the sputtering flame of my muse.

7. Have you written any crossovers?

Nope... though I have thought about it just my muse is a fickle thing.

8. What is the craziest fic you’ve written?

Hmm... this one would involve a certain brother and a small purchase of land that lead to getting a title and flaunting said title to his own detriment. Virgil would still like to dump his fishy ass in the middle of the ocean for that one.

My ass is too lazy to find the link for this one and its lost in the depths of my archives... titled... Laird Fish or something like that.

9. What’s the fic you’ve written with the saddest ending?

I like to leave stuff on happy endings when I complete them.. though I know I have written a few chapters with not so nice endings...

10. What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?

No clue.. I leave that to my readers to decide.

11. What is your smuttiest fic?

Teee he he... smuttiest.. I forever strive to out smut myself with every new thing I've written...and smuttiness is like art.. it varies for everyone so its in the eye of the beholder.

When I have out smuttied myself though I will let you know.

12. Have you ever received hate on a fic?

As of yet, no. Somehow I've managed to dodge this so far... knock on wood.

13. What is the nicest comment you’ve received?

I can't quantify this.. I love all my comments equally.

14. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not that I am aware of .. I rare pair it so I really don't think anyone would want to.

15. How many fics do you have marked as incomplete?

I plead the fifth

16. Which of the WIPS will most likely be finished first?

No clue.. ask my ever absent muse if you can find her. If you do located her please send her my way... preferably tied up and shoved in a trunk so she can't escape again... also if anyone has access to chloroform it would be much appreciated.

17. Which WIP are you looking forward to finishing?

Erm... at this point finishing anything would be great...but I would like to note that its about a plausibly as me climbing Mount Everest .. sigh

18. Is there a WIP that you’re considering abandoning?

The date of my last updates on Ao3 should be telling... so erm.. ya. Life + climbing Everest = WTF

19. Which complete fic would you consider rewriting?

The odd tweak here in there is any of my shorts mainly for correction but no to rewrites so far

20. Which complete fic is your favourite?

Hmmm... don't have a preference at this point. It really depends on my mood on any given day.

If someone is brand new to your writing, what work would you want them to start with to get to know you, your style, what you’re all about?

Any of my shorts I guess.. maybe my Whumptober collection cause that's where I think I really started in the TaG Fandom. Really just go by post date cause some of my later fic make reference to earlier ones..

Fic Tag Game

Grabbed from @hils79, because it looked like fun.

Name: Merinnan, which I’ve gone by for... fifteen years now, I think? Prior to that, I mostly used Calicia (and sometimes Zoi).

Fandoms: Like Hils, I’m only going to list the fandoms I’ve actually written fic for.

Star Trek: My very first fandom, and the one I’ve written the most fics for (so far - I suspect that DMBJ will overtake it. It certainly already has in terms of word count). I was (and am still) primarily a DS9 fan, and was a huge Kira/Dukat and Garak/Bashir shipper back in the day. Most of my Trekfics are DS9 fics, but I also dabbled a little bit in TOS and TNG, and had one or two crackfic crossovers that involved Voyager characters. Discovery has tempted me with a few fic ideas, but I haven’t written anything for it yet.

Bishoujo Senshi Sailormoon: aka, the show that first had me seriously questioning my sexuality. Look, Haruka and Michiru are #goals, don’t judge me. This is also where my Zoi name came from, after the first season villain Zoisite, whom I cosplayed several times. Unsurprisingly, my main ships are HaruMichi and KunZoi. Despite this fact, neither of my published Sailormoon fics are HaruMichi.

Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040: A short-lived fandom, but one I still liked enough to write a fic for and get the OST CD.

World of Warcraft: I wouldn’t say I’m really part of the fandom, per se, but I’ve been playing since the dying days of Burning Crusade, am a huge lore nerd, and started writing a crossover fic that is currently on indefinite hiatus. I do plan to come back and finish it, but first RL got in the way, and now I have to try and remember where I’d actually been planning to go with it.

A Court of Thorns and Roses: That crossover fic I just mentioned? Yeah, this is what it’s a crossover with. ACoTaR fandom went sleepy for awhile, but it’s back up and kicking now that A Court of Silver Flames is out - if any of you are still following me, it’s great to see everyone active again! To the surprise of no-one who knows me, I’m a big Nessian shipper.

Mo Dao Zu Shi / Chen Qing Ling / The Untamed: I came to this fandom via ACoTaR, actually, after a certain person (hi, @rhysand-vs-fenrys!) wouldn’t stop gushing about it :-) This is the fandom that really and seriously got me back into regular fic writing again after 15-ish years. I’m a multishipper here, and have written / am writing WangXian, NieLan, XiCheng, XuanLi, and XiSang.

Guardian / Zhen Hun: MDZS fandom led me to Guardian, which, along with DMBJ, has devoured my life in a way that hasn’t happened since my Star Trek days, and I love it! WeiLan is my major ship, but I’m also quite fond of the DaMian life raft.

Zhu Yilong: Yes, I’m going to list a person as a fandom. Zhu Yilong is one of the stars of Guardian, and is both incredibly pretty and an incredibly talented actor. So much so that I have suffered through some truly terrible dramas just to watch him in them. I do not write Z1L-fic, since RPF of living people is a personal squick of mine, but I am working on a massive crossover fic of most of his characters.

Mo Du: Guardian led me along to more of Priest’s works, such as Mo Du, which is now officially my favourite book, and I adore the main WenZhou ship. The Mo Du fandom right now is pretty tiny, and I’m still working on my first fic for it, but I hope that it will grow with the donghua due out this year, and the drama having just started filming.

Daomu Biji / The Lost Tomb: I initially came into this fandom because of Zhu Yilong, who played Wu Xie in the Reboot / Reunion / Chongqi drama, and then I got sucked into the fandom pit of all of the books and dramas and spinoffs, and it’s wonderful and fantastic. I have written so much for it, and have so much more planned. PingXie and PingXieSang are my main ships here, but I’m also a HeiHua fan, and very much enjoying the RiSang pool noodle that @kholran created.

Tropes: Hurt/Comfort and crack are my major ones.

Fic I spent most time on: A toss-up between Endings and Beginnings and Reunion, both DS9 fics. Endings and Beginnings is an alternate ending to the show, while Reunion is a Gul Dukat-centric fic set around, oh, season 5ish? Both were written for and initially published in print fanzines, so in addition to time spent writing, there was a lot of back and forth for editing, etc.

Favourite fic(s) you’ve written: Look, I honestly couldn’t say. I like most of the fics I’ve written, and there are several that I’m really proud of and really like.

Fic I spent least time on: Silent Graves, a super angsty DMBJ/Lost Tomb Xiaoge fic. I think I wrote it in like 15 minutes.

Longest fic: Cat’s Paw, a DMBJ/Lost Tomb PingXieSang canon rewrite fic I co-wrote with @xantissa, at 247 826 words. For fics written by just me, not with a co-writer, then that would be Nevermore, my WIP MDZS/CQL XiCheng Pacific Rim AU, at 22 276 words and counting.

Shortest fic: Every entry in my DS9 Drabbles series, with each one at exactly 100 words. Although if you count them as a quintdrabble, then Indiscretion (a DS9 missing scene vignette about Gul Dukat, set during the episode of the same name) at 169 words.

Most hits/kudos/comments/bookmarks/subscriptions: The answer to all of these is either Cat’s Paw or Nevermore, so I’m going to give the next highest.

Hits: Those who fear darkness have never seen what light can do, a DMBJ/Lost Tomb PingXie supernatural AU fic co-written with xantissa.

Since this fic also takes the highest kudos, bookmarks, and subscriptions after Cat’s Paw/Nevermore, I’ll skip to the next fic along on each of those.

Kudos: Stars fall like diamonds, a DMBJ/Lost Tomb PingXie missing scene fic from Reboot/Reunion/Chongqi.

Bookmarks: A Knight in Bloody Armour, another DMBJ/Lost Tomb PingXieSang supernatural AU fic (but a different supernatural AU) co-written with xantissa.

Comments: Ears and Other Related Calamities, yet another DMBJ/Lost Tomb PingXieSang supernatural AU fic (of a different again supernatural AU) co-written with xantissa.

Subscriptions: The Rescue Job, a Guardian WeiLan Leverage AU, currently at one chapter complete and posted out of a planned five chapters.

Fic you want to rewrite/expand on: We have plans for a prequel and a sequel to A Knight in Bloody Armour, and a spinoff fic for The Zhang Identity (a DMBJ/Lost Tomb PingXie AU that is complete but not yet posted. It will be posted in April as part of the Small Fandoms Big Bang).

Share a bit of a WIP: This is from an as-yet-unnamed post-canon fix-it fic for the Guardian drama:

It was hurting again. Zhao Yunlan curled up into a tight ball under the hospital blankets, trying to ignore it enough to try to get back to sleep. He knew it wouldn't work, because he couldn't remember a time when it ever did, but it was always worth a shot, right? He squeezed his eyes shut and held himself tightly for a few...moments? Minutes?...before grabbing his stuffed cat and clutching it while he forced himself to breathe deep, slow breaths the way the doctors back in Spring City had taught him.

Eventually, the pain died back down to its usual dull ache, the one that was bearable and let him play, and watch TV, and do school lessons with his mother. One day, she said, they'd find a doctor who knew what was wrong, why he hurt all the time, and the doctor would give him medicine that would keep the worst pain away so that he could go to an actual school and meet more kids than the ones who lived in their apartment block or who frequented the same playground that he liked to go to.

Zhao Yunlan tried closing his eyes again, seeing if he could go back to sleep, but he was far too awake now. He sighed, sitting up in bed and looking around the room. Again. It was just like the hospital rooms in Spring City, and in Kiyota City. He figured that if the doctors here in Tomorrow Mountains couldn't help, his parents would take him to yet another city, and the hospital rooms there would probably look the same, too.

Then, over the faint beeping of hospital equipment, and the quiet murmurs further down the corridor of nurses at the nurse station or seeing to other patients, he heard a soft sniffling sound, like someone was trying not to cry too loudly. He picked up his stuffed cat and looked at it.

"What do you think, Dead Cat?" he asked it. "Should we go and find them?"

Dead Cat didn't answer, of course, but that didn't stop Zhao Yunlan from assuming that it agreed with him, and slipping out of bed. His feet touched the cold tile floor with barely a sound, and, still holding Dead Cat tightly, Zhao Yunlan padded over to the door. He looked up and down the corridor, then left his room to track down the sniffling noise.

He wasn't surprised that it came from the next room. He was surprised that it came from another kid, a boy who looked to be about his age, huddled in bed and wiping his eyes.

"Hi," Zhao Yunlan whispered. The other boy looked up in surprise, then stopped to clutch his chest as he began to cough. Once he'd finished coughing, Zhao Yunlan and Dead Cat were perched on the end of his bed.

"I'm Zhao Yunlan, and this is Dead Cat." He held up Dead Cat, moving one of the paws to wave hello. "What's your name?"

The boy wiped his eyes again. "Shen Ye."

For the WIP ask, did you receive a request for Fake Empire yet?

I have not!

Okay, so Fake Empire was going to be my fic for the 2018 OMGCP Big Bang, and I ended up writing Home Like Apple Pie for that instead. It started as an idea I had for an original novel years ago about a TV “family” on a long-running show that gets cancelled, and tries to move on with their lives, feeling like their TV family is more like their real family at that point.

This lent itself really well to a Check, Please AU where Jack follows in his mom’s footsteps instead of his father’s but still follows the same basic trajectory.

Hence the name Fake Empire, which I took from the National song. I mean, look at these lyrics. Do they not scream Jack and Bitty?

Stay out super late tonight Picking apples, making pies Put a little something in our lemonade And take it with us

We're half awake in a fake empire We're half awake in a fake empire

Tiptoe through our shiny city With our diamond slippers on Do our gay ballet on ice Bluebirds on our shoulders

Anyway, in this AU Jack is a child star who plays his mom’s son on a family sitcom in the 90s/early 2000s (general plot is she’s a former model who gets roped into coaching her son’s hockey team, wacky hijinks ensue, Bad Bob makes occasional cameos as the husband/father who travels for work) and ends up becoming The Next Big Thing when he gets cast as the teen lead in a MCU-style franchise. Except he flames out exactly the way he did in the comic and his role ends up being recast with Kent Parson, who played his BFF on the sitcom.

Kent goes on to be a big action star. (And really does not factor into this AU beyond that.) Jack goes to rehab and therapy, goes to college, majors in film studies and decides he wants to make documentaries.

Except a streaming service comes calling and wants to reboot the show for a new audience, with Jack reprising his character in the lead role. It’s part of a production deal Alicia has signed, and Jack is not interested unless he can somehow leverage this into getting his documentary produced. His parents finally convince him to do it and it’s going pretty well except for one problem: the guy they hired to replace Kent is a YouTube personality, not an actor, and he does not know how to act natural when he’s reading lines. Jack is not a fan.

Bittle is struggling not to cry, Jack thinks. He should feel bad because he knows what it’s like to feel like you’re shattering into a million pieces, but instead he just feels a mean little flame of satisfaction burn somewhere deep inside his chest.

“How’s the new kid working out?” Papa asks. Jack responds with an unintelligble grunt.

“It doesn’t behoove you to sulk about it,” Papa says.

It was going to be about found family, and where the line between real life and fiction is.

“None of this is real, Jack. Tomorrow we go back to our real lives and this’ll all be over.”

“Bittle … Bits. That’s not. This isn’t the end. Wrapping the show doesn’t change what any of us are to each other. I’ve known Shitty for years and I couldn’t get rid of him if I tried. Same with Ransom and Holster. We’ll see each other in a few months for the premiere, and all the press. Wrapping a season is kind of just the beginning, you’ll see.”

(In this AU, Ransom and Holster were pulled in whenever they needed child extras in the original series because their fathers were writers on it, and they've come back as junior writers for the reboot.)

You can guess where it goes from here. I had a hard time getting it to come together because I feel like there’s so much I don’t know about TV production I’m not really sure I can pull it off.

I feel like it’s a pretty solid plot, I just don’t know how to write it. I’ve been more interested in it lately because WandaVision got me thinking about TV escapism and fake empires again.

CS Fic Rec Monday: Fics I Loved in 2019/// October - December

So here we are, the last list of 2019 fics! I wasn’t sure I would get them done each week, but I did it! (And I think several of you seemed to enjoy :) Thanks!) I apologize for not having this posted sooner, but everything rebooted just as I was getting nearly done, and I lost my entire post in progress!

Anyway, here we go with the fics from October to the end of the year...

Seeing as how October brought all things a bit spooky and Halloween-y, it seemed only right to start this list out with a fic from the @csrolereversal event that I simply adore: “A House is Never Still” by: @capnjay21 This fic is completely unique and full of such a great blend of mystery, angst, backstory, and thrills that I was completely sucked in from the very first chapter. I’ve gotten woefully behind, as I know there is at least one chapter update I haven’t gotten to read yet, but it is so well-written and creative, you will absolutely be enthralled!

Another awesomely spooky story is “An American Haunting” by: @welllpthisishappening I loved this modern AU take on Emma, Killian, and many of the rest of our OuaT favorites as workers at an American historical village, and their encounter with a very real (and vengefull!) ghost. Plus, there’s plenty of secreative flirting and pining as well, since Emma and Killian like each other, but haven’t yet admitted it. ;)

October also brought us the @cspupstravaganza which allowed us to have several stories starring our pirate and princess alongside various adorable versions of man’s best friend. All of these fics deserve a read, but I especially loved: “Captain Morgan” by: @pirateherokillian, “Twelve Legged Matchmaker” by: @shireness-says, “...between a rock and a bark place” by: @thisonesatellite and “Arm’d with Hell Flames and Fury all at Once” by: @darkcolinodonorgasm.

@profdanglaisstuff also wrote an incredibly funny and irresistible CS with a dog fic (that I thought was part of @cspupstravaganza, but I guess not!) called “Release the Kraken”. This one had me both giggling and melting at the sweetness - don’t miss it!

“Drift” by: @thisonesatellite is a one shot which just blew me away with the emotion and the healing worked into the modern au verse of it. Emma and Killian’s finding each other and slowly connecting and allowing each other to be less alone in the world is just beautiful. I really can’t say enough about how gorgeous and affecting it is. If you missed this one, please do yourself a favor and read it now. <3

“Until the Stars are all Alight” by: @whimsicallyenchantedrose was another excellent AU MC I began to enjoy in these last months of 2019. It was an entry to @cssns19 and mixes together two of my very favorite things: Lord of the Rings and Once Upon a Time in a thrilling crossover. This has questing, romance, angst and adventure in equal measures, and is so well-done all around. It is a WIP, but I have never known Jennifer to leave an MC unfinished, so I know you won’t be disappointed!!

“Not Your (Soul)Mate” by: @let-it-raines probably doesn’t really need my introduction, but just in case you didn’t see the modern AU take on soulmates for the @cssns, definitely read it now! I love how awkwardly humorous the way Emma and Killian’s soulmate status makes itself known (even the two of them definitely do not!) Not only that, but the comic element mixes in real emotion as they try to fight destiny to really make the piece more meaningful. Plus, Killian as a doting uncle is not to be missed either! ;)

Fandom Birthday Playlist by: @searchingwardrobes I did tell you there would be entries from this collection on every list, didn’t I? Melanie really excelled with this mission she set herself - so many engaging and fitting fics for fandom friends, and the three on this list are some of the best yet! You’ll totally fall for Killian as a young minister looking for someone to love him for himself in “Raging Fire”, with Killian and Emma as a young Lieutenant Duckling helping each other through a painful trial in “Burn the Ships”, and with single father Killian and lost amnesiac Emma in “Start of Time”.

“the unexpected life” by: @thisonesatellite An author!Killian/librarian!Killian, adorable Captain Cobra, and a hesitant-but-drawn-to-him Emma -- what more could we really ask for as readers? This story is beautiful and heartwarming and all the good things the best fics are. I love how this Killian and Emma move from acquaintances to friends to loves to eventually a wonderful family with Henry.

“Drink the Wild Air” by: @profdanglaisstuff I just love EF AUs with dashing sailor Killian and young princess Emma, and this gives us that very thing in gorgeous fashion. Both the adventure and the romance are excellent in this one, and though it is still a WIP, you will love and simply devour every bit of it posted so far -- I can almost guarantee it!!

“Four Eyes” by: @welllpthisishappening Oh my goodness, this helping of sweet papa Killian, fighting a bit with admitting he’s aging when he finds out that he needs glasses right along with he and Emma’s little girl, is just beyond perfect! There are references to The Great Gatsby (a sure way into my affections!) an adorably exasperated Emma and lovably realistic fluff galore.

“The Swan of Misthaven” by: @slow-smiles Oh my! This is an EF Captain Duckling AU that will absolutely steal your heart - and in truth the final part of a larger collection of one shots called “My Princess, My Pirate” by this author. They’re all worth reading, and again, I am a little late to the party, so maybe most folks know about this fic already. Still what a thrilling adventure plot - and some great moments of pirate Killian slowly winning over Snow and Charming as they all fight for the princess they love!

“Across the Snowy Places” by: @profdanglaisstuff There truly aren’t enough Thanksgiving fics in this fandom, and that made me love this five part offering all the more. I love the pretend relationship trope and how efficiently Saira uses it here. The pining and the chemistry between Emma and Killian is off the charts and SO well done!! I got such a kick out of the cast of characters she surrounded them with too, and just how amazingly they come together for good in the end!

“Tell Me It’s Real (it’s real)” by: @let-it-raines This one plays with the same trope as the story before it. Best friends Emma and Killian pose as a couple to appease her family over the holidays, but their feelings keep threatening to upset the whole ploy and reveal how much more they both want. Plus, there’s Liam visiting his “little” brother as well as a wonderful rendition of David and MM. The angst and the pining and the steamy moments “for show” just make this one - even before things work into their eventual happy resolution!

“The Perfect Gift” by: @terreisa This is a modern au featuring CS as office co-workers that just charms you from beginning to end! Emma thinks she doesn’t want anything to do with the handsome Brit at the desk next to hers, but after a holiday gift exchange run by meddling matchmaker Mary Margaret, she begins to realize he isn’t who she believed him to be. This is seriously a gift for the reader, and you’ll love every word!! <3

“Hashtag Holiday Party” by: @shireness-says No exaggeration here when I say that I start cackling with laughter whenever I think of this story. Devon does such a great job painting the worst kind of first date at a holiday party and how Emma deals with it. Luckily Killian and Belle are at the same party as well (as friends) and Emma finds that while the date was a bust, the party itself might not have been a waste at all... ;)

“To Keep it All the Year” by: @profdanglaisstuff This story reminds me exactly why I love a good Christmas story - the heart and good will found within it will truly warm your heart. The Killian we meet at the start of this is angry and alone and has nothing left, but then he meets Emma (and Henry) and he begins to see a way forward. I don’t want to spoil all the heart-tugging and glorious moments as the story progresses, but if you missed this around the holidays, please go back and read it now!!

“We Kill the Flame” by: @thisonesatellite Seriously, if you haven’t been reading this WIP futuristic MC, then put down whatever you’re doing, and go start it ASAP! This one will take your breath away with the pulse-pounding action, the high stakes, and the risks Emma and Killian go through for each other and for the tiniest chance at grasping a better life. The whole roster of characters are perfectly cast, and the plot is amazing! So original, so well-done... you won’t even want to blink until you’ve swallowed each chapter whole -- it’s that intensely good!

Fic I spent the most time on: I’m not really sure? I mean, if you count the WIPs that i still spend a lot of time thinking about but which never saw the light of day, probably the Helen/Charlotte fic taking place right after Comoros that remains Ostensibly Finished But Unworthy in my brain’s categories. Started it in 2015. Edited it last in 2018. Still read it over every 6 months or so xD

Fic I spent the least amount of time on: Any one of my wee askbox-prompt ficlets. I tend to write those directly into a tumblah post to keep myself from working too hard on them, since i typically take those requests for the sake of having something to get the creative juices flowing and actually put words down on the page without editing too much along the way.

Most hits: ‘heard pain tell love, she said ‘where would i be without you?’ - my fibro!Hecate fic set after s2 of TWW2017 reboot. Still my favorite, because it was still an immense labor of love.

Most kudos: Same as above.

Most comment threads: ‘stone in your water’ has almost double the comment threads of ‘heard pain tell love’! This fascinates me because it kinda shows how much more active and interactive the Yennaia fandom is, in comparison, tbh. ‘pain’ has had 2 years to garner additional hits and kudos, although Stone also has two extra chapters

Most bookmarks: Again, ‘heard pain tell love’

Highest total word count: same again, though with the in-progress chapter Stone surpasses it

Favorite fic I wrote: ‘heard pain tell love’ was again an enormous labor of love and it remains a personal favorite. i’m also a big fan of ‘sky full of stars’

Fic I want to rewrite/expand on: i actually have most of a second chapter and a few other bits and bobs in progress for ‘keep to the stars (the dawn will come)’, my Inquisitor!Hecate fic! and i’ve been working on some follow-up pieces to the post-Coup Yennaia fic, but they’re very much on the back-burner.

Share a bit of a wip or story idea you’re working on: Here’s a wee bit from chapter 8 of ‘stone’!

Tissaia calls upon her Chaos here and there--not actively casting spells, but summoning it, exerting her will upon it. It is not unlike watching a candle flicker on a gusty evening: her flame winks out, or leaps high and ravenously devours the wick.

She does this for herself, of course--testing the limits of her magic against the dimeritium in her blood--but although she does not say as much, it is for Yennefer too. And so, Yennefer is attentive. She knows the feel of Chaos moving, knows the way the air changes when magic is used. What she does not know is the taste, the smell, the feel of magic used by one mage or another.

So she inundates herself in Tissaia’s small uses of magic, from time to time calling upon her own Chaos for comparison. Such practice, however, is largely useless: she is at home in her own body, her own consciousness; her own magic only feels like Chaos in its natural state.

KZK Discord Digest [Week of Nov 22 - Nov 28]

SUMMARY: Work's still progressing on the LE Kirins. Some previews for the Aeterna (Time) one in this post! Kat's made a channel in the Discord specifically for posting quick WIP shots and previews while he's working. I likely won't be covering that channel in the Digests, given 1. there are a lot and 2. there are still WIP shots in Announcements, but we'll see. In the meantime, you'll have to check out the Discord to see em. Links in my SL profile. We migrated our databases to a new host the other day. The old host had been giving us fits for a long while, from downtime to failed purchases, but the recent streak of "vendors going offline and unable to come back online if we had to reboot anything" was the last straw. New host is much more robust than the old one - you'll notice this in faster purchase times, and if vendors need to reboot, they'll come back up faster. In addition, we'll be able to add item descriptions again! We weren't able to have these for quite a while due to issues with the old host. We'll get those updated soon as we have a bit of spare time. One caveat: If you happen to have any Vouchers left over from old events (e.g. the Sweetheart vouchers from Valentine's where you choose an avatar color), those will no longer work. They need to talk to the databases & don't have the right configuration now. You can manually redeem them from Kat if you need. Similarly, any vendors that we missed updating will no longer be able to properly talk to the item servers. If you happen across a vendor that seems to be failing to deliver an item, let us know so we can update it!

KatLast Friday at 5:09 PM @everyone So one of the final 4 kirins to be release is Aeterna, the avatar of Time. Here's a quick concept doodle for it. It wears a mask resembling a ram's head, and the horns are notched like a gear or cog.

For the design, I wanted something that looked aged and wise, yet still had a regal air to it. its main colors will be bronze, gold, copper, and maroon.

KatLast Friday at 8:31 PM @everyone So tonight I was approached by a fellow KZK community member and friend, with a simple request to help them troubleshoot a rig. After trial and error, a solution was found and they were well on their way toward finishing a project that had been plaguing them for weeks.

And herein lies the problem. The individual, who will remain nameless, who rigged this model, seems to have taken umbrage to me assisting.

I don't understand this mentality. I don't understand why they're upset, or why they're taking it out on the person who asked me for help.

KZK wouldn't be where it was were it not for the contributions of many before me. Everything I've learned, I learned from youtube videos, forum tutorials, and industry leaders like Michael "Orb" Vicente, most famous for his 'Orb_Cracks' brush that basically every major game studio uses these days(I'm not kidding).

Im also not afraid to admit when I'm wrong, or when I don't understand something. Years ago, I didn't know how to make good LODs, until members of this very community gave me information that made it possible.

Point I'm trying to make is, and the reason I'm posting this: If you don't know something, reach out. Its not dumb to not know something. Its dumb to not ask for help, because it just makes you look close minded and ignorant. Don't punish others for your ignorance, because the files I worked with tonight were new territory for me. I had the missing piece to the puzzle and progress was made.

Art and progress can't exist in a vacuum. There's entire generations of others who came long before you did--And there'll be plenty more to follow in your footsteps and eventually surpass you. Its why I'm always so eager to help. always eager to teach, because someone else was kind enough to teach me.

I'm 'famous', at least as far as the furry community in Second life is concerned. I could use that power for evil, but I dont. Instead I use it to try and spread a message from time to time. Today's lesson just happened to be about 'learning to learn', a subject that's always been near and dear to me.

You can ignore these kinds of posts if you want, but if you do read them, Please take them either with a grain of salt, or to heart. up to you. Its just important for me to raise awareness for issues like this from time to time.

KatLast Sunday at 5:25 AM @everyone My progress for today on the Aeterna Kirin. I've got the rings already modelled, just need to uv unwrap them and get them baked out once I get some sculpted detail onto them. Then its on to the floaty bits of fabric, which should go quickly, and lastly a new set of fur assets to make this old soul look wiry and wise. I'm particularly tickled with the skull so far. While definitely not true to a goat's skull, as intended, I much prefer the visage this design gives and I hope you all do too!

The skull and horns (and all other parts), will be static(with a bento alternative tail included, per the norm), so you'll be free to rip everything apart and repurpose it as your heart desires!

KatLast Monday at 6:16 PM @everyone Progress on the Aeterna is probably 95% at this point. The skin/body textures in use are not final(jsut using the chocolate textures so its not solid white), and I still gotta add the belly scales and make the asset for the maroon fabric hanging from the rings all over. I'm pretty stoked with how these hair assets came out. Also fun little side effect, when you remove the mask/horns, it looks like a cool kirin/zebra witch doctor kinda, so hey, some modding potentiall there for people.

Bonus: No mask

KatYesterday at 4:35 AM @everyone At this moment, we're performing some server migration for our databases(We've got backups this time I promise!), so purchasing will be unavailable.

For those curious, we've had many vendors crashing and not coming back online in recent months. We originally suspected this to be a Second Life issue but it traced back to recent changes our host made, effectively crippling our servers.

We're migrating to a new host, and internal testing has already shown faster purchases, vendor boots, and the restoration of a long missing feature, item descriptions!!

We'll give the all clear once migration is done.

KatYesterday at 7:20 AM @everyone It is 7:15 in the morning, and Flame and I have powered through the night (although this is his day), to chase down a MYRIAD of issues that have been plaguing our system for the last several years. The crashing and failure to boot was definitely the nail in the coffin So this had to happen sooner or later.

BUT! We're ..technically code orange. The migration is complete, and as of the time of this writing, only the MAIN STORE KZK vendors and DIREWOLF Vendors have been updated to cache to the new server.

ANY Purchases made from ANY OTHER KZK vendor WILL NOT DELIVER at this time. I will be fixing the remaining vendors grid-wide once I've gone and copped a few hours of beauty sleep. This includes all KZK Multi-category vendors, and ALL Single prim vendors besides the Direwolves.

ALSO: If you are in possession of a voucher, they will no longer deliver items! There is no way to fix these going forward besides doing a manual delivery of the desired item(in exchange for the in-tact, unused voucher). All future vouchers going forward will use the new system.

TLDR: Only kzk main vendors work in Okarthel, as well as direwolves. Everything else is still fucked and im too tired to bother. I'll deal with those in the morning(after ive slept) (any purchases made to off-site vendors will be manually redelivered tomorrow as well, so if you wanna avoid failed purchases, just use Okarthel)

Flame SoulisYesterday at 7:35 AM Do note though that vendors and vouchers will continue to be recorded. All we have to do is re-add the purchase/item redemption to the newer system and your item will deliver.

So, in short, your purchase will be recorded if purchased outside the main store. It'll just be delayed until someone can update the newer system.

KatYesterday at 8:08 PM @everyone Took all day but I think I've managed to track down all active locations. All vendors, including the single prim stuff, has been switched over. In the event you find a vendor that fails to deliver properly, please let me or blau know.

Current vendor versions are 1.94(sergal and normal), and 1.51 for the stone pillar ones.

Summoning Disaster - Part Two: Pandora’s Piñata

In which two of my OCs end up in @fatal-blow 's Golden Verse. Set in an unspecified point before Defenders of Earth's prologue; You can find out more about the story on his wip page.

Here extrapolations start to wear thin and I have to invent things whole cloth. I'm open to edit things to be more in line with canon if feasible. Also, my OCs come from a more high fantasy setting, so their power sets are rather broad if compared to the Defenders.

(the title of the first part was inspired by an Imagine Dragon's song, the second by an album by Diablo Swing Orchestra)

Once the guards were dealt with, Amp’s team took in the scene.

Aside from the parts that had been blown off, the walls and roof of the large room were scarred irregularly, soot and cracks forming shapes that hurt the eye if looked at for too long. The bare concrete floor was more evenly charred, with clear spots where equipment – and people, judging by the lingering smell – had been incinerated, but the snaking lines of a very articulated summoning circle had been etched on it with mechanical precision. And at the very center of the room, a large grey sheet embroidered with small glimmering stones and multicolored threads, buzzing with power, was covering something hemispherical and about ten feet wide.

Amp felt Norman’s focus wander on the circle and the shapes on the walls. “Reaper?”

“Never seen a circle this complicated. And the walls… it’s like the explosion was trying to add to it,” he replied with a frown.

Someone cleared their voice. The team turned as one toward the center of the room.

“I had hoped for a more badass one-liner, to be honest, but points for the spooky I guess.” The husky voice coming from the hemisphere had some hiss to it, and suggested the owner was rather large.

“A literal shroud,” Reaper whispered, “makes sense.”

Amp nodded. “Odds are there’s another creature in there,” he whispered, and met Ethereous’ gaze. “Uncover and suppress them, slow as you like. Don’t display threats, everyone, but be ready for things to get messy.”

Ethereous nodded and cautiously approached the shroud. He grabbed a corner and looked back at Amp, who nodded. The shroud was thrown aside with a faint jingle. The hemisphere turned out to be a cage, its bars fixed directly in the floor, and inside it…

Amp blinked in silence, and the creature did the same to adjust their sight to the sudden light. The creature looked like… like a large, one-armed, muscular anthropomorphic dinosaur dressed up for a ren fair. Iron-grey scales, spiky head, crocodile-like eyes, long thick tail ending with an arrow-shaped bone, thick off-white tunic and leather bracer. Amp smothered his surprise to reboot his brain. The creature was alone, but kneeling off-center in the cage, as if giving space to an invisible companion.

The creature raised their snout to sniff around and grimaced in Ethereous’ direction. “Please stop that, this cage isn’t for show.” The lizard stretched its hand toward the bars – not in Ethereous’ direction, Amp noticed, they were just proving a point – and retracted it when a black flame sparked from the point where the lizard’s fingers were about to touch them. “And your magic’s stench is giving this shit a run for its money,” the lizard added gesturing at the cage.

The lizard was able to smell magic, apparently. Ethereous glanced back at Amp. Amp covertly gestured for him to back away and nodded, then noticed the lizard had followed Ethereous’ gaze and was staring at him in the eyes. Now Amp could feel the lizard, frustrated and excited and cautiously hopeful, and its hidden companion, curious and eerily calm. Red and blue. Amp slipped within the lizard to know more, finding a white-hot tangle of vicious anger kept on a short leash-

Amp reeled backwards, his head spinning. The lizard kept staring at him, tail swinging from side to side. He felt his team’s anxiety spike from far away, and blindly reached to keep it under control.

“Let’s keep our talents to each own, fellow Heartstoker.” The lizard sized up Reaper and Quantum. “I hope you didn’t come here just to kill assholes and taking turns to piss me off, I hoped for something more… I don’t know, civilized.”

Amp took a deep breath to clear his head. Another empath… they must have used that repressed fury to bludgeon him away somehow. He reached more subtly, feeling the lizard taming their own emotions. No reaction. The lizard had merely caught him off-guard, he just had to keep himself on the surface. The invisible companion showed no change. “Alright,” he sighed, “let’s be civilized. I’m Amp, who are you?” There was no reaction for the name in either creature.

“Sharaka. What’s your goal here?”

“Learning what the ‘assholes’ did in this room. Who’s your invisible friend there?”

“My name is Elphimas,” said a measured voice. “And I might be able to improve your understanding of what happened, though I do not know whether I should yet.”

“Amp, how are things around there?” Static. He felt slightly tenser than he should.

Amp covered his mouth with a hand. “Trying to figure out things. Anything wrong?”

“Not yet, but there are guys with weird armors that block sparks and light like nothing, they’re a pain in the ass.” The noise of a violent discharge, gunshots. “Bullets work fine though.”

“Roger that. Quantum, step back and watch over Static’s team.” Amp rolled his shoulders back and met Sharaka’s eyes again. “I apologize for my rudeness,” he said, voice dripping with sarcasm, “but I’m on a clock here. What do I have to do to get an explanation?”

“Letting us out of here would be a great start,” Sharaka replied.

“Cracking the crystal on the top of the cage should suffice. I suggest a ranged attack,” supplied Elphimas. Amp felt vague concern. “As a gesture of good faith, I can tell you we are not the beings the ritual was supposed to summon. Luckily for this plane, I might add.”

Amp took a few steps forward to get a better view of the crystal Elphimas was talking about. Fist-sized, with some black substance whirling within it. Would probably backfire if hit from short distance. “Two questions. One: how can I know you’re not going to attack us as soon as you’re free?”

“How can I know you’re not just going to put us in another fucking cage?” Sharaka snarled. “You look like tough guys and did nothing stupid. Two?”

“I don’t want you to leave you with the ‘assholes’. Will you play nice and come with us?” Amp tapped idly on his gun.

Sharaka sniffed the air. Hope and distrust spiked at once. Did she smell emotions too? “I have to get a few things back from them,” Sharaka objected after a long moment. “Then I’ll decide.”

“Retrieving her weapon in particular would be in both our groups’ interest,” added Elphimas.

“Why? And could you please fucking show yourself, Elphimas?”

A second kneeling figure appeared next to Sharaka. Elphimas looked human, and very… nondescript. Aside from the ren faire clothes, their skin was vaguely tan, their hair mud-brown and their dull eyes a mixture of grey, green and brown. Amp was rather sure it wasn’t their true appearance, but it was marginally better than speaking to thin air. Elphimas smoothed nonexistent creases in their clothes for a moment, hesitant, then jerked their head aside as if they had heard something. “Your teammates are probably going to give you the reason momentarily,” they said with another hint of concern.

The earth shook with a low rumble, and right on cue Static opened comms. “Now would be the right time for the cavalry, Amp! They’re so mad they’re dropping the building on us!” Amp felt the faint shadow of worry at the bottom of Static’s laughter. “More importantly, I’ve been cut off from the others.” Gunshots, crackling of electricity, silence. “Wouldn’t want to outshine them too badly, know what I mean?”

Sharaka’s tail slammed on the ground. She was literally fuming - Amp could see air trembling around her. “Bastards, that’s my weapon! I’ll kill them all!” She snarled and slammed her tail down again. “Get me out of here and you won’t find the ashes of those fuckers!”

“Sharaka’s weapon can destroy almost anything on contact if imbued with enough energy,” Elphimas explained.

Amp took his gun out as the image of a cornered Static filled him with cold fury. Let Sharaka rampage, he could handle her if push came to shove and worst case scenario they could leave her body behind. The crystal exploded in a column of black fire when he shot it. He opened comms with the rest of the Defenders. “Reaper and Ethereous will threaten Lab 2 to take pressure off diversion team. Windfall and Anyform, don’t let reinforcements come near Lab 1. Static, Adamantine, broadcast your locations, I’m coming. Link, prepare Lab 3 for demolition. Quantum, help Link and blind Lab 1.” A noise of straining metal made Amp turn back to the cage.

Sharaka’s first kick had bent the steel bars. The second opened a hole in the cage, which she casually widened with her hand until she could squeeze through. “Elphimas. Pack.” she hissed, and the next moment she took off at dead run, shattering the door as she sped through it.

Amp opened comms again. “If you see a humanoid lizard, get out of her way. Repeat: humanoid lizard, get out of the way. Elphimas, you’re coming with m-”

But the “human” had already disappeared. Amp looked for Elphimas’ mind nearby, with little hope. He allowed himself three precious seconds of anger before sharpening himself again.

First story you ever wrote: Hm. My first one would have been back in high school and all my super early stuff got lost or thrown away over the years so they're long gone by now. (Thank goodness) but the first FanFiction project I can remember writing was something along the lines of my current WIP Dog Vs Wolf.

A story on which you have been flamed: Other than some complaints about the grammar before I was finally blessed with @mustardyellowsunshine 's guidance, I haven't had anybody send me anything really flame worthy.

Your favorite story that you have written or are writing: The Half Breed's Wife has been a lot of fun to work on, and I would still consider it my favorite, at least for the moment.

Favorite story on a fanfiction site: 'Something Real' By Angelica pierce is what first comes to mind. But I also love 'To Play Games' by Touch of Pixie Dust. I might even call it a tie.

Why you became a fanfiction writer: To get the stories on paper and out of my head? If I don't write I just end up fantasizing about it all day anyway. The people who enjoy my work are just reaping the benefits. But realistically I have a lot of other reasons. I love the pairing, I have too much mental energy and this is how I burn it off, I'd like to write an original story one day and FanFiction has been a great way to practice... But basically, I was writing FanFiction long before I ever started uploading it. So why not share?

Favorite media to write for: Inuyasha (Pairing: InuXKag)

Story you’ve reviewed the most: er, I'm not a good reviewer. If I really like a story I'll leave a review but I'm not typically the kind of person that thinks to leave a review for every new chapter that comes out. But nowadays it's less about laziness and more about the time I have available to read. (I spend a lot of time writing but Im also GM for a dungeons and dragons campaign I hold once a week, I have a son and a husband... Getting to just relax and read is a rare thing for me.)

Your most popular story among readers: The Half Breed's Wife by a long shot.

A story on which you have/had writers block: Honor bound T.T

A story you deleted and then resurrected later: A Story For Shippo might be the closest since I did a hard reboot on it. But it never did get deleted.

Longest private messaging conversation and with whom: @grapefruitwannabe and I pm a lot :D she's a sweetheart~

Favorite genre (i.e. fantasy, adventure, crime, etc): Romance and humor are undeniably my favorites. They seem to go hand in hand with me too.

Your favorite lesser-known pairing: I don't really care much for other pairings. But I guess I'd like to see poor Houjo get a happily ever after with a nice girl? (off to the side...)

Your biggest qualm when reading fanfiction: Characterization. I don't care what setting or situation you put them in, if Inuyasha and/or Kagome are way out of character I'm noping out super fast.

Your biggest qualm when writing fanfiction: Other than the typical writing pitfall of grammar, I find that quiet scenes like eating together, working on something or a tense moment just before a fight are the kind of situations that give me the most trouble. They can be really important to a story. full of body language and mixed with deep meaningful thoughts or a balance of action and conversation. (But they're sooooo fiddly...)

A story you didn’t expect to get popular: I didn't expect any of my stories to get popular. -w-; A little pessimistic of me I guess. But I really had no idea the community had hung on as well as it has. I got a very pleasant surprise the day I started posting again.
