WIP Intro: The Spirit Well (sequel to The Stray Spirit)

🌸 Logline

A bard and a forest spirit form a band (badly) and get into politics (badly).

🌸 Blurb

The Auric Guild is not what it seems.

After saving the province from a magical apocalypse, Emry and Aspen move into the city as Guild members, hoping to live life as simple bards.

But when spirits begin to wake up all over the country, the Guild reveals its true mission: uphold peace between the provinces. Its old guard of musicians once doubled as spies, ambassadors, and propaganda artists, hiding their actions behind song and smiles. And as the world struggles to adapt to the existence of spirits, Emry and Aspen must take on the mantle.

They quickly pull together a rag-tag musical troupe and accompany Council aide Cal on a political negotiation across the border. Here, province leaders eye spirits as fresh pawns, spirit cultists claw for power, and a familiar scientist tempts both with a dangerous discovery about the source of the apocalypse.

And while this scientific revelation threatens to tear the provinces apart, Emry and Aspen come together with a dangerous experiment of their own: how far can the limits of spirit possession be stretched?

Name: Lucy Skye Desmond

Sexuality/Gender Identity: Pansexual; cis female

Birthday: July 18th (Cancer)

Age: A few months younger than Pickles, they were in the same grade in high school. 31 through 36 in The Wicker Man

Where is She From: Austin, Texas originally, moved to Tomahawk, Wisconsin when she was about 8 years old

Height: 5’3”

Nicknames: Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds; Luce (Pickles); Kitten (Dick Knubbler)

Love Interests: Lucy is solo polyamorous. What that means is essentially that she is her own primary partner. Even if she were to get married to one of her partners, she comes first to herself. She operated this way as a teenager, and she tried to when she first started dating her abusive ex only for things to obviously go sideways there. After she kills her abuser, she goes back to being solo polyamorous. She words it as being “poly and into free love,” and doesn’t have the exact words for it herself, but *gestures at my sweet summer child* that’s what she is.

She ends up having some level of emotional connection or intimate friendship with the members of Dethklok, Charles, Dick Knubbler, and a few others in the series. By the end of the story, as it stands right now, (though that can change depending on how The Wicker Man evolves), she ends up with four or five of the relationships being particularly strong to varying degrees with the rest remaining as either friends, intimate friends, or comets.

Her deepest connection is with Pickles, which is a “best friends who started dating and now sometimes do romantic things” kind of relationship. They are more concerned about keeping their friendship in tact while being together than they are about the romance, as far as priorities are concerned.

Lucy does not experience jealousy. She sometimes might have envy of what her partners do with other people in insecure moments and situations (this is when her partners are poorly managing their end of things within the friendship or relationship), but she doesn’t feel jealousy toward the other people. She has a strong sense of compersion, which is loosely defined as being happy when your partners are doing things with other people that makes them happy.

Where She Fits Into the Metalocalypse Universe: Lucy is part of the prophecy, a part that revealed itself more prominently after she killed her abuser in a blacked out state. She is The Sacred Flame, the feminine that connects the masculine together. She’s the flowing fire that runs between the points of the star that the band makes up.

Lucy becomes the backup singer/backing vocalist and third guitarist for Dethklok (if Iron Maiden could do it, Dethklok damn sure can).

Formal writerblr introduction!

Hi!

This is the revival of a defunct writerblr, formerly under the url @ambidextrousarcher​, which is my main blog right now. Before I proceed into my usual long rambles about my WIP’s (which is kind of the point of this blog), let me introduce myself first.

Personal info: I go by Nila. I’m a 23 year old Indian medical student. Writing is both a hobby and a catharsis for me, channeling out my emotions, both positive and negative. I am also an avid reader, who tends to get lost in research more often than not, and an amateur singer.

Writing Background: I started writing in earnest when I was 8, for a short story competition. My first story was a sci-fi story about cloning, which was one of the winning pieces of the competition in question.

At 13, I started work on a historical novel about the Russian Revolution, which I discontinued when I realized the inadequacy of my research. Unfortunately, that novel is still in its research phase.

At 18, I started to work on my most beloved mythological WIP, Antraatman, which is still in the process of being written.

My WIP’s

Note: Most of these works are based on the Mahabharata, Indian mythical history, and the interpretations of the characters I write about are mine alone. Every reader is requested to respect the same. In case of disagreements, polite discussions are always welcome, although I request each of you to refrain from abuse, bullying, anon hate and thinly veiled blame games, due to such disagreements. In return, I can promise you that in spite of any such issues, I will be polite and not malign you in public, either.

That said, here we are with the first and foremost of my works:

1.      Antraatman: My first proper novel-length piece of writing, Antraatman is a first-person retelling of the main story of the Mahabharata through the eyes of one of its main protagonists and a hero in his own right, Arjun. It is currently at Draupadi (another of the three main protagonists) Swayamvara.

*Swayamvara/Swayamvar- Self-choice ceremony aka a ceremony where a bride chooses her groom.

It is written in first person PoV, the prologue in Pritha’s (Arjun’s mother’s) point of view, and the rest of the book in Arjun’s own.

2.     A King’s Fortune: Based on the AU idea of ‘What if Arjun, the third-born Pandava, was instead the first-born?’, it is a work that tracks the butterfly effects of the switching of order of birth between Yudhisthir, Arjun’s eldest brother, and Arjun himself, written in third person PoV. 3.     Vith Vithi Cha: Sanskrit for ‘Lost and Found’, this work explores the possibility of Arjun managing to save his son from an untimely death in the Kurukshetra war (the major war in the Mahabharata), written in first person alternating PoV. See below for the link.

4.     Child of Prophecy: A work which ventures rather strictly into fanfiction territory, this is one of my fond universes, where the world of Harry Potter and the Mahabharata, two of my favourite literary works in terms of worlds, are fused with each other. In other words, the characters of the Mahabharata are in the world of Harry Potter, creating entirely new story possibilities. Here, too, the focal character, as in all the works discussed above, is Arjun, and the story, bar a short prologue written in his mother’s first person PoV, is his first person PoV. A Soulmates AU in which Ben is horrified to find out he’s soulmates with his 16 year old student, ten years his junior. (no underage shenanigans) This fic fucked me up. The world building is so stunning. The story is rich with love and fluff, but oh the angst. Soooo much angst and emotional anguish and two people who are trying their best but just can't communicate for shit. The overall story is so beautiful and worth every heartbreaking moment. A happy ending WILL come!

Satan Wears a Rolex by AquaWolfGirl. (Modern, E, 205K)A Devil Wears Prada AU. Unfinished, but it’s fascinating and it ends well where it is.

Hiraeth by Ferasha. (1990′s, E, 204K)

An absolute angst and pain train of a historical war fic. This is not a comfort fic. It will fuck you up. But if you’re into that, the way they’ve woven canon plot in with the Yugoslav Wars is a masterpiece. It’s dark and gritty and will make you feel things.

I am an average-kinda-tall alie--I mean human, at somewhere between 5′6 to 5′8. Probably.

2. Eye color

I thought it was brown but apparently in certain lightings it appears amber because once a friend of mine was really freaked out by the fact that my eyes looked “yellow”.

Medium brown and turquoise. The lower half of my hair is dyed turquoise, but it’s starting to fade out to green. It has been dubbed mermaid hair multiple times and you wonder whether I made the decision to dye my hair because of the magic hair in my wip or if I made magic hair a thing in my wip because I had a subconscious desire to dye my hair. Hm.

I’m not Christian myself but there is some really good, especially positive music created from some of these singers! But I mean... Owl City is one of my all time favourite singers, not just a Christian one.

I’d be surprised if you’ve heard of it but; moon mist! My absolute favourite is getting two scoops with salted caramel as the second flavour, since the salty and sweet balance out!

I like being outside somewhere nice and quiet! When that isn’t much of an option, I really like reading other people’s writing or scientific journals (which I know is weird but too bad I’m a science nerd).

I haven’t watched many movies recently, but one that comes to mind is Matilda. The movie was so sweet and the book was so wonderful.

Because although I haven’t read much in way of fanfiction, I have in webcomics. So! Favourites are always hard, but: Yoshi from White Noise! It’s an indie webcomic made by @thephooka (sorry for the tag!) and it is absolutely amazing. I highly recommend going to check it out if you like LGBTQ+ rep, awesome worldbuilding, fantastical creatures, and just wonderful characters overall!

16. First original story

Oof. I definitely have some from before this, but the first one I’ve ever found (because it was my first attempt at typing up a story) is Dragon Fountain from when I was 10, a terrible, stereotypically cliche book about an orphan who finds out he’s the King’s long lost son with a prophecy to kill the dragon secretly terrorizing the kingdom by shapeshifting into the King’s advisor. I think I got through 8 chapters, but each chapter was perhaps two pages of 18 size font. I did not know how to write back then, gah.

ASOIAF Fic Recs

Had an anon ask for some recs and um... yeah, I decided to post it separately because, I may have, um, gone a little overboard. Lots of different pairings involved below.

Yeah. 

Born-a-Girl Fics

I have an enormous love for these stories, as it's so much fun to see how the various dynamics of the Starks, and indeed, all of Westeros change when the one thing Rhaegar was wrong about in canon becomes something he was right about after all.

All of Madrigal-in-Training's stories on AO3, her profile being located here. I'd read a few born-a-girl!Jon stories before I started reading her work and had enjoyed the genre, but after I read her stuff, I damn near became obsessed. (Did I say ‘near’? I lied, there’s no ‘near’ about it - I did become obsessed. I admit it.) Most of her fics are WiPs, but she updates fairly frequently, so her stories are definitely worth following.

The Acquaint the Flesh series, by Author376.  In a Westeros where Soulmates are bound and Marked by the Gods to bind Houses together and pay blood debts, Lyarra Snow and Oberyn Martell are about to get a shock. The born-a-girl!Jon story to end all born-a-girl!Jon stories. I have re-read this series at least a hundred times and I still squee my head off every single time. The gods throwing together two complete opposites, an OFC who is so much fun, a Frey we can actually like, and that's barely scratching the surface! The series is also a WiP, but don't let that put you off.

And I'm calling for my mother as I pull the pillars down, by dwellingondreams.  Elia Martell becomes the Lady of Casterly Rock due to her mother's machinations. Robarra Baratheon becomes a princess due to the Mad King's obsession with finding a bride of Targaryen blood. The seeds of rebellion are planted all the same. JFC, who knew that Elia/Tywin could be possible? Well, in a world where Robert Baratheon is born Robarra Baratheon and is quickly snatched up to be Rhaegar's wife, it seems that it is. Of course, this switch up does not prevent Aerys and Rhaegar from setting the world on fire because they're either insane or obsessed with prophecy or both. Still, the affects of this change-up are really fun.

empire (i'm building it with all i know), by willowoftheriver.  Fem!Jon Snow is discovered to be a Targaryen as a chld, triggering an unfortunate marriage. Femslash ahoy! Viserys is still a nutjob, though. Words cannot express how much I love this two-shot series.

Oh, mercy, I implore, by SecondStarOnTheLeft. She collects friends with the same ease she conceives healthy babes - so her goodmother tells her, something soft and wistful in her sad eyes, and Berta cannot disagree. A different crown princess, and a different world. Jeez, but I do love these gender-flipped fics. This one is fun too. Girl!Robert isn’t taking any crap from Rhaegar, no sir.

Time-Travel or Fix-It stories

Three Tully Daughters, by ProcrastinationIsMyCrime.  Conflicts for the Iron Throne before the darkest hour led to the defeat of the living on Westeros. Jon must have known the fate of men for he’d drugged and snuck his sisters onto a ship set for Braavos. That had been the last time either Stark daughter had seen Jon. Upon Arya's death, Sansa encounters a Dornish bachelor in Braavos who by all rights should be dead. Armed with knowledge held by no other, she would sail for Westeros and save her home; for she was in the reign of Aerys II Targaryen. There would be less chaos for Littlefinger this time. Joffrey would never be born if she could help it. Cersei would never sit the Iron Throne. A time-travel story that actually doesn't solve the insertion process by having the character in question (Sansa, in this case) be reborn into a new family. A very ASOIAF twist! I was a bit wary of the Sansa/Jaime pairing at first, but in this story it works, OMG it works. Sheer brilliance. WiP.

Valar Botis (All Men Must Serve), by sanva.  “But you, Lord Snow, you’ll be fighting their battles forever.” Ser Alliser Thorne Every time he died his last in that life he awoke again in another at the exact moment of Ghost's birth. Jon Snow is the King of Groundhog Day. What more needs to be said? ;)

Aegon the Unlikely-era Fics

You and I conspire and split the ground, by SecondStarOnTheLeft.  Grandfather's boots are next, soft and worn where Father's are always polished to gleaming, and then Grandfather's hands, and then his face. He looks tired, under his beard, under his crown, but he is smiling when he reaches under the bed to her. "My sister Daella used hide under her bed with her dollies, when we were small," he says, his voice very quiet and very gentle. "Will you come out, poppet? Your grandmother and I would like to speak with you a little, if we may." Wherein Aegon the Unlikely actually doesn't wash his hands of his kids and their obsession with prophecies, wherein Rhaella Targaryen is the ultimate sweetheart who deserves Nice Things, and wherein Rhaelle Targaryen is a total badass. I have a huge love of the family of Aegon the Unlikely and their antics, and this fic is a favorite of mine.

Behind the Ballads, by Ramzes.  Jenny of Oldstones and her prince were a favourite theme for singers, their romance making them larger than life. What were they like in life? I absolutely love this behind-the-songs look into the life of Duncan the Small, and seeing just WTF he was thinking. Utterly brilliant. I'd also recommend you look at Ramzes' other work. She has at least two series about Rhaelle Targaryen, one that covers the same time frame as this one (but is not connected to this story), and one that is a series of AUs featuring what might have happened if Rhaelle had lived to the era of Robert's Rebellion. Definitely worth a look.

Coins, by ariel2me. QUOTE SWAP: Rhaelle Targaryen + “What sort of father uses his own flesh and blood to pay his debts?” Oh, the heart. It breaks. 

Crack Fics

Ned Stark Adopts His Way Through Westeros, by witchbreaker.  "This isn't my fault." And other lies Eddard Stark tells himself. A short fic inspired in the comments of Acquaint the Flesh, it is probably one of the funniest stories ever, not to mention adorable. Also, read the comments, as there is a hysterical little extra piece in there dreamed up by a responder and the author. The best.

A Helpful FAQ, by Siamesa. In a world where Renly Baratheon accidentally spent the War of Four Kings on vacation in Dorne, surviving King Stannis's small council meetings takes a clear understanding of people and politics. Luckily, he's here to provide both... or so he thinks. Ohdearlord, this one still makes me LMAO, even after having practically memorized it. Hilarious.

The Dragon and the Maiden, by modbelle. Viserys brings the Stark girl Joffrey's head. He's surprised by her reaction to this. He'd expected her to be upset, but she seems quite delighted by this. What a strangely charming creature she is, even if she is a Stark. Yeah, this one came out of left field for me, but holy crap who knew such a thing could somehow work?

AU Fics

Desert Wolves, by bluegoldrose.  "But Ashara’s daughter had been stillborn, and his fair lady had thrown herself from a tower soon after..." ~Ser Barristan Selmy What if Ashara's daughter lived? What if Ashara Dayne raised Jon Snow alongside her own bastard? What if Ned Stark never stopped loving Ashara even when he fell in love with Catelyn? The bastards of Lord Eddard Stark are the Desert Wolves. The true born children of Lord Eddard Stark are the Winter Wolves. Their lives are lived apart until the tides of war see fit to bring them together. Ashara/Ned is a ship that I cling to, and one that I am always on the lookout for in regards to fics. This one is one of my favorites, particularly since neither Catelyn nor Ashara is demonized. It's a WiP, and hasn't been updated in a while, but I'm still hopeful that the last few chapters will eventually be posted.

Winter's Crown, by orphan_account.  What if Rickard Stark had other ambitions? Or, a history of the Starks, from Torrhen to Rickard, in a world where they spent two and a half centuries building up their wealth and waiting for the perfect moment to declare their independence. A twist/expansion on all that we learned from World of Ice and Fire. Very interesting.

Lightning (Struck Before Me), by sanva.  “Send the letters,” her voice came out clear, unwavering, resolute, “request House Stark, Arryn, and Tully send representatives to treat and bend the knee.” Wherein Jon discovers something long hidden deep in the crypts of Winterfell and everything changes. This fic is part of a series, and I'm not sure if any more will be posted for it, but this is still fun to read on its own. A mix of book and show.

Dragonstone, by Danivat.  After the death of his brother, Robert Baratheon needs a loyalist Lord on Dragonstone. He also really wants back in Ned's good graces. Or, the Game goes on after the Rebellions. The Starks still won't play, but everyone is playing the Game all around them, and Jon Sand has somehow become an important piece. Robert Baratheon, unknowingly, is the Targaryens' greatest asset. This one could fall under either the category of AU or Crack, or perhaps both. There are quite a few divergent points, and they are listed in the notes at the start of the story so you will not be hopelessly lost. Very fun.

One Day (Is Now and Forever), by SimplexityJane.  Rhaegar takes Lyanna to Dragonstone, not Dorne. This story had the potential to be a complete and utter epic, but it also stands wonderfully as it is.

Kingdoms at War, by deathwalker.  What if Ned Stark wasn't executed at the Great Sept of Baelor? Instead, what if, he had been removed from Kingslanding before Joffrey could give the order for his head? What impact would this have had on the Game of Thrones? I've called this fic a "small step to the left" in the past, and it is so much fun, particularly since it’s based on a question we have all asked ourselves. Though, be prepared - this is a long one.

The Duel, by Aiur. The duel between Robb and Joffrey goes differently than anyone predicts.  Be prepared to shed a few tears here. That’s all I’m sayin’.

The Dragon’s Queen, by orphan_account. Aerys married his eldest son off to Elia Martell immediately after Viserys's birth instead of sending his cousin to Essos, and she bore Rhaegar three children before dying in labor with the last. Rhaegar is therefore a young widower when he crowns Lyanna Stark the Queen of Love and Beauty during the tourney at Harrenhal, and Aerys decides that his son will marry the lady. Here are seven letters Lyanna Stark sent in another world. I really love epistolary stories, and this one is so interesting. I wish there was more of it, because it hints at so much more. Very fun.

But you are of the North, by LuminaCarina. Ned Stark doesn’t visit from the Eyrie. Brandon, Lyanna and Benjen adjust. Very interesting idea.

The Squire of Dragonstone, by EmynIthilien.  Instead of joining the Night's Watch, Jon travels south to squire for Stannis on Dragonstone. Roughly spanning the events of A Game of Thrones through A Storm of Swords, Stannis and Jon investigate the royal incest mess, fight battles in and out of the courtroom, attend a joyous wedding, and come to rely on each other more than they ever expected. I call this one “Sherlock!Stannis and Watson!Jon”. A great trilogy of stories where things are actually taken care of, and in a legal-ish way!

The Lady of Storm’s End, by Sarah_Black. Sansa was supposed to marry someone brave, gentle and strong. Lord Stannis Baratheon was not what she had in mind. Or: The one where Sansa is never betrothed to Joffrey, never loses Lady, and only comes to King's Landing to attend King Robert's wedding feast. The king is marrying Margaery Tyrell as Cersei's treason has been exposed and dealt with. But things are never simple when the Iron Throne is in desperate need of heirs and wildlings threaten the peace... Another pairing that is a bit weird, but the author makes it work beautifully! The story is also inspired by The Squire of Dragonstone listed above, though it is not necessary to read it. The author explains anything you need to know in the opening notes. 

broken lovers series, by soapboxblues. wherein rhaegar wins the war, and jaime manages to keep his head by taking a stark for a wife I never knew Lyanna/Jaime could somehow be possible, but this series proved it to me. There are so many wonderful things about this series, I can’t even.

Kindness, Not Fear, by SecondStarOnTheLeft. In the wake of Daenerys' triumph, Sansa comes to King's Landing. Multi-POV post-series short fic.  An older story, but one that I still love to pieces. 

The Lion Queen, by Laine. I am the first of my kind, and the bards will sing of me for centuries after I'm gone. Ned Stark takes the Iron Throne, and he intends to share it with his Queen. Yeah, pretty sure I was going to hell for liking this pairing, but nonetheless, I do love it. Plus, a non-crazy Cersei. How often do we see her?

I Fear No Fate (For You Are My Fate, My Sweet), by vixleonard. Myrcella Baratheon always knew she would be married to a man for a political alliance. What she did not know was that she was going to be left in the North at 8-years-old to one day become the wife of Robb Stark and just how much it would change her life. I think this was one of the first ASOIAF fics that I bookmarked, and I still come back to it from time to time. A classic.

Harold Offeh

I absolutely loved the talk that Harold Offeh gave to Foundation. It was wonderfully in-depth and really went into the significance of different source materials that his works draw on, their histories and the ways in which they have influenced his practice. 

His definitions of performance art:

- A series of gestures or actions that are presented to an audience

- This is what all art is whether you choose to use your body as a material or not. For instance, painting is still a set of gestures that you present to others!

- Performance as research - not just for the viewer’s sake but also a tool to process ideas and reach personal understandings - ‘I use my body as a tool to explore and investigate’. ‘A way of asking questions’.

- ‘Performance is not a medium that’s defined by medium’

^I have personally found this expansiveness of performance quite freeing in my own work. Rather than the work just being about the medium or materiality, performance is defined by “pose” and the movements of “the body”, as Offeh talked about, taking on a new meaning when it is enacted. 

I particularly loved these snippets of his new project that he showed us, ‘Hail The New Prophets’ for Bold Tendencies. 

It draws on Sun Ra, an American Jazz musician who is the ‘Godfather of Afrofuturism’

working in the 50s 

^took on a new persona - embodied it, completely assumed and lived this identity

myth narrative - said he was from Saturn

forming a fictional identity - became real - was a provocation

was at a time of deeply ingrained segregation - is thus political when someone names themselves and makes a new identity

^history of slavery - the erasure of identity

I love how he is turning the imagery of a spaceship from one of Sun Ra’s videos into a real life slide that people can interact with - an “intergenerational, intergalactic slide”. I really want to see this in person, particularly as he said that “sounds are going to be played from the ship”. I feel that this world-building and sense of a journey through movement - people going down the slides - and sound, cannot really be replicated in a digital sphere. 

This engagement with sci-fi is very relevant to my FMP. He is “inviting people to share with me their prophecies for the future” and I was particularly struck by how he said, “by speculating about the future you are thinking about the present”. This is what my FMP has allowed me to do, enabling me to “articulate [my] desires for now” namely a less speciesist world where humans are viewed as part of a larger whole and non-human life is given similar weight and value. Like Offeh’s ‘Hail The New Prophets’, I want my work to encourage viewers to consider their own hopes and “prophecies for the future” and through which consider their “desires” for the present.

- loved your use of VOICE whether that’s through the voice over or the singing at the end

- love how you used the voice in different ways - the effects, the singing. Also, you are very much using it not only informationally but through tone and mood.

- beginning section with text - like how it addressed the viewer. It’s quite arresting when people use the second person as you are speaking directly to the viewer as an acknowledgement. 

-  ^effective strategy - ‘you are formless’ is in a way a kind of provocation - reading that it makes you think, am I formless? In what way?

- Could be more stretched out:

- BUT doesn’t necessarily need to be longer. You’ll find out in showing it and watching it yourself. Depends on what context you’re showing it in. 

Options:

1) online - short is probably better

2) in person - can make a conscious choice for it to be a looped film

^Over 3 mins = short enough for it to be watched more than once. Looped can be an effective strategy - get more and more when you rewatch it. 

- wanted more - let the elements breathe, let people think about the connections between different sections, sequences and transitions

INSTALLATION:

He asked me where I would ideally show the film. I said:

- in person 

- quite typical gallery room - big screen therefore big text. Make ‘you are formless’ etc a bolder, bigger statement

- black out room 

- surround sound - somehow seperate the voice from the other audios.

^He said this sounds great. He talked of ‘the architecture of sound’: sense of space, for instance, voices from behind you, another sound next to you, is an effective way of drawing people into the work.

This was a brilliant tutorial. Even though it was around 10 minutes long it was amazingly helpful. I’m SO happy that he picked up on all of the key themes of my work: ECOLOGY, BODY MATTER, TIME and HISTORY. I’m particularly pleased that he talked of ‘the human’ vs. animals, bacteria and plant life and  how this relates to OUR PLACE IN THE WORLD. Also, that the animation conveyed evolution effectively. 

Even though we have been doing blind crits with students and teachers, by now I have talked to most people about what my project is about and so the crits are not truly ‘blind’! The fact that my film made him think about humanity’s place in the world really has given my confidence in my project, this film and that it is achieving and conveying my key aims for people who have no prior knowledge of my work. 

After Harold’s feedback, I think that the film may be too dense. By lengthening the clips I have taken from different films or using more blank spaces without imagery I think I could “let the elements breathe”. For people who have no prior understanding of my project, I think this would make it more impactful by allowing them to “think about and make connections”. 

However, although after this tutorial I have decided that this film would be in-person ideally, given COVID I want to ensure that it functions well on a digital space. Therefore, the current shorter pace and the way this encourage re-watching could be better for a digital space as Harold said. I may want to make it a looped film.

I will definitely keep the first bit of text where I address the viewer directly. I had not fully considered the significance of this but I agree that “provocations” like this engage the viewer well. Also, I’m happy that he liked my use of voice and singing - I’m not a singer so I’m relieved that he thought it was good! I will continue using voice effects as before I was not sure if this made it sound too artificial.

14th CENTURY CE RPF Hallowmas, Or Shortest Of Day by skazka Isabella, future girl-queen of England, receives a visit from a predecessor. Commentary: Melancholy and sweet, with wee Isabella as an adorable seven-year-old who's very much at sea and Anne of Bohemia as the gentlest and kindest of ghosts. It's A Terrible Reign by angevin2 A dying John of Gaunt, with the aid of his long-dead brother, walks the road not taken. Commentary: Wickedly deflates the "It's a Wonderful Life" premise simply by having John of Gaunt be himself--confident, convinced that what he wants is surely for the best, and blunt enough to point out that most of the awful stuff that could have happened DID happen anyway. Also, Gaunt and the Black Prince are both believable and hysterical as brothers. Jesu dulcis memoria by angevin2 Master Ladislaus's only regret is that his greatest masterpiece--the Wilton Diptych--is one born of grief. Commentary: Brief, sorrowful and stunningly beautiful. I had a lump in my throat when I finished reading it. Remembrance of a Weeping Queen by angevin2 Anne of Bohemia contemplates her purpose in life. Commentary: It’s not easy dealing with public crises while coping with private grief. If you like royal ladies who make a difference in their world and who smile sweetly and gently despite heartbreak, this is for you. *** A STUDY IN EMERALD - NEIL GAIMAN: R'Iyeh Is Not An Empty House by Trobadora It all began because of the woman. *** ARTHURIAN MYTHOLOGY Wheels Within Wheels by Philipa_Moss “Have you heard?” Linet asked. “She’s back.” *** AUSTIN & MURRY-O'KEEFE FAMILIES - MADELEINE L'ENGLE Galois Theory by primeideal Five times everything fell into place. That Unexpected Fateful Hour, Once Again at Hand by ElegantPi Charles Wallace is assigned two new classmates and a task, just before his winter holiday. Wordless by CG (NYCScribbler) Three times Calvin O'Keefe hasn't known what to say. *** BENJAMIN JANUARY MYSTERIES - BARBARA HAMBLY Escargots by Nary Rose was not one to offer platitudes for a man she hadn't known, to a man who hadn't cared about him. "What killed him?" she asked instead, for she couldn't think of any reason why Shaw would be telling her about this if it had been a natural death. "Poison's our best guess." He paused, as if considering how to most gently say what was coming next. "He took his final meal at the Hotel Iberville last night. So as you might imagine, I got a pressin' need to speak with your nephew, Gabriel Corbier." Commentary: This story belongs to the women, and deservedly so. Rose January/Janvier is brilliant and shrewd and a fantastic scientific detective in 1830s New Orleans, while her sister-in-law Olympe Corbier solves half the mystery by deducing what posion was used. It's sharp, smoothly written and as thoroughly researched as any of the books. Honestly, you could drop this into Barbara Hambly's Good Man Friday (the book in which Benjamin January goes off to Washington DC, a trip which Rose mentions in passing) and it would fit in seamlessly. I'm honestly not sure that the person who wrote this for me isn't Barbara Hambly. If you love historical mysteries, stories featuring characters of color, or both, then read this story. Commentary: This ties together the stories of The Stand and The Dark Tower, blending the worlds and explaining why Flagg saw Fran Goldsmith's baby as so much of a threat. The tone and the characterization are spot-on, and there's one action scene early on that chilled me. And despite all the supernatural occurrences, which are handled beautifully, this world is solidly grounded. It feels real. Honest to God, if I didn't know better, I'd think that Stephen King fanficced himself. Doctor Who/Mrs. Pollifax - Dorothy Gilman Mrs. Pollifax and the Christmas Party by Emiline “Since you mention it, there was something else,” she admitted. “I’d like you both to come to my Christmas party this year.” With gate-crashing by the unstoppable Jack Harkness. Doctor Who/Wicked Voice - Vernon Lee The Sapphire of Rassilon by zopyrus All Grace Holloway wanted was an ordinary night at the San Francisco Opera. But when the Doctor shows up unexpectedly (again), Grace finds herself travelling back to 18th-century Venice—with a stop along the way to pick up the forgotten Victorian author, Vernon Lee. Murdered composers, lesbian drama, opera singers, and more! Commentary: A gorgeous crossover with the Eighth Doctor and a canon called A Wicked Voice, set mostly in Venice of the 1700s and 1800s. It's a gorgeous story--vivid and colorful, and capable of making you see the Venice of both time periods. This is a story to get lost it. Read it. You'll be glad that you did. Dresden Files - Jim Butcher/Tale of the Five Series - Diane Duane Fire Working by melannen Herewiss goes through a Door that is probably not the Door into Starlight, and meets a man who uses the Fire. Romeo And Juliet - Shakespeare/Midsummer Night's Dream - Shakespeare/Peter Pan - J. M. Barrie Perhaps. Perhaps. Perhaps. by fresne Perhaps, the story went this way. Perhaps, it went that way. Perhaps. *** DRESDEN FILES - JIM BUTCHER Johnny's Little Secret by shiplizard A mafia errand boy worries about his junior partner. Slash implied, friendship explicit. There's no ignoring the fact that eagles are turning people into horses. We just have to learn to live with it." Commentary: Glorious crackfic. Every line made me smile, grin or laugh. Quintessentially Yuletide. *** ELIZABETHAN AND JACOBEAN THEATRE & LITERATURE RPF Sad Stories of the Death of Kings by angevin It's 1593, and Kit Marlowe is trying out a new genre. Commentary: If you're intimidated by the canon's title, don't be. Kit Marlowe and Will Shakespeare are playwrights and rivals, each criticizing each other's work while writing plays that are strongly influenced by the same. Marlowe is gloriously OTT, as he was in real life, and Shakespeare is the ultimate fanboy who can't quite tell if his idol is flirting or not. This made me smile. I am not entirely certain that the writer isn't really Seanan McGuire. Commentary: A fairy tale retelling in space. Heartwrenching and so, so good. Sneedronningen | The Snow Queen - Hans Christian Andersen The Enchanted Hawk by Alona In which the robber girl encounters a dysfunctional royal family and makes the most of it. Commentary: The robber girl--no longer so little--is beautifully sly, cunning and practical, defying conventions both in her world and in ours. She doesn't assume that enchanted animals are necessarily truthful, she takes the time to scout out a situation, and she knows what she wants and goes after it cheerfully and unashamedly. I'd love to read more about her and her adventures. *** FALLEN LONDON (FORMERLY ECHO BAZAAR) Fortune, Fate, Freedom by escritoireazul Are we the sum of our choices, or are we our fate? Commentary: A Choose Your Own Adventure tale about the Cheesemonger, the finest of all spies. Hard To Find by Kastaka As if the Comtessa would let a little thing like social ostracism stand in her way. Commentary: When this was first published, it was the first Echo Bazaar fic I'd ever seen, and it continues the story of the subject character--the Missing Comtessa--smashingly, not to mention capturing the atmosphere of the twisted world of Fallen London so well. If you know the game of Echo Bazaar, you'll love it. If you don't know the game, you'll STILL love it, plus the story may inspire interest in the game. Either way, you win! or leave it by anstaar A tough shares their story. *** FIREFLY Can’t Take The Sky by Glinda Serenity does not understand grief; Serenity understands grief all too well. One day Wendy says to Peter, "I'd like more girls on my crew." So Peter goes a-hunting Lost Girls and brings back Green-eyed Sue. Commentary: You don't have to know S.J. Tucker's songs--specifically, the Wendy Trilogy--to understand this story about the time when Wendy Darling became a pirate called Red-Handed Jill. This story is about Green-Eyed Sue, Jill's first mate, but more than that, it's about finding the place where you belong. Most of all, it's about identity and love and being honest with yourself. Highly recommended. Journey's End by eris_kyrall (kereia) The decision to go back home had not come easily to Wendy Darling, and the hardest part of it was saying goodbye. Commentary: This story deals with Wendy's departure from Neverland, but it treats her decision to leave as right and natural, as if Wendy were a potted plant that had outgrown its container. At the same time, it shows that those who didn't follow Wendy home were also right. Also, I love the female friendship in this story. Bittersweet.

An adventure in writing healing magic...

an essay nobody asked for.

I originally started writing this as a response to @abalonetea 's post on disabilities in fiction, but it got way off topic, so I've put it here by itself.

This is a post about Healing Magic. Which is to say, a major, major factor in the worldbuilding in TSP and all future related works is based on one of the most powerful elemental magics being used for healing. So one of my biggest projects was figuring out, what are the drawbacks of this? Because it needs to have a weakness, right?

I wanted to be able to save the lives of characters against most odds, miraculously. But I didn't want them to be fearless. There had to be a risk, or it's gonna get boring. And all of that had to come down to the easy question. How the hell does it work?

In The Singer's Prophecy, Light magic, used for healing, works by speeding and slowing the affected parts of the human body. So it could, say, slow bloodflow to a damaged area while accellerating the healing of tissues, to prevent a patient from bleeding out. This means there are a few key weaknesses in regards mainly to parasitic ailments - certain cancers, viruses, immune disorders, and other things that grow unchecked and fuzed with vital parts of the body.

This also means scar tissue is an issue. Accelerated healing of soft tissue is going to be imperfect, if we're relying on the injured body to repair itself. This is going to make certain things worse than if they were healed with regular modern medicine.

A traumatic chest injury healed with surgeries, maybe metal or electrical aides, and long-term therapy is going to heal up a lot nicer than forcing the wounds to heal themselves, leaving marred tissues in the heart that may cause deterioration or decreased functionality (Nathaniel Ettonridge and his unreasonable list of prescriptions). Eye injuries healed up to look perfect and flawless, but with no regard to reattaching the nerves properly, since they don't regenerate well on their own, more increasingly result in blindness than they would with proper medical care (Eva Lourandera, who uses her perception of magic as an aide by enchanting physical items in her surroundings). Healing the tissues over a severed limb may prevent the ability to reattach properly (Sarra and her prototype bionic prosthetic).

It also doesn't have the cosmetic benefits that surgical care might have. This has led to the development of enchanted inks for elaborate cover-up tattoos, some of which can increase sensory perception in damaged skin, deliver mild pain releif, or warm the skin to promote increased bloodflow in an area with damaged blood vessels.

Any magic system is supposed to have its drawbacks. Including medical magics. And I for one have had an excellent time with the checks and balances, and the effects these have had on the characters.
