I love the idea of omega witch Steve, who really wants children but doesn’t think he can have them, which is why he is married to a man who doesn’t want any, also because as a male omega he thinks no one will want him. So of course he is hiding his powers as well, he doesn’t want anymore reasons to be different. Then billy comes to town. And he’s not going to let steve just disappear into this life. And if helps bring his demon spawn into the world all the better.
One of the things that I really like in the Witches Of Eastwick film is how the devil interacts with all the women differently with Alex he challenges her, with Jane he sees her artistic soul and with Suki it’s an understanding, he listens carefully when she speaks.
I imagine a Steve in this scenario would feel very lonely like there’s a part of him that’s missing and he feels the ache of it every day but he puts on a brave face. His husband is too wrapped up in his own drives, he doesn’t see the pain that Steve feels, then Steve starts to develop his powers, it’s small things at first, he’s hungry and Robin invites him to lunch, he wants to cancel a date with his husband and a storm comes but he isn’t really connecting the dots.
Then one night he’s with Robin, his husband is out of town due to his work so he goes to stay with Robin and she’s the only person that he discusses his deepest desire to have a child. She encourages him to get a second opinion or adopt but Steve knows that his husband has no interest in children and so Robin plays devil’s advocate if he could have the perfect man who would give him everything he needs what would he be like?
Steve can’t help laughing at first, he’s married but when he says his husband Robin scoffs and tells him he can’t say him so Steve thinks really hard about all the attributes that he would like in a partner, someone who wanted to spend more time with him, who cared about his needs, who didn’t treat him any differently because he was an Omega, he pauses a little quiver in his voice when he says someone who wants children.
Steve feels a little rush within him when he utters the final words and for several days a storm brews keeping his husband from being able to return home as it isn’t safe for planes to land there, he may have to drive home. Steve decides to take a little time to himself and hang out with Robin more but then a mysterious man comes to town and everyone can't stop talking about him, he’s handsome but so uncouth, there’s something mesmerising about him, he feels a little dangerous and he has an intense way of looking at people as though he’s staring into their very souls.
Steve feels intrigued by this man, nobody new ever comes to Hawkins especially not rich mysterious strangers. Maybe Steve runs a bakery (he loves to bake and he volunteers time at the local nursery and donates cakes and pastries to local events held for children) and the man orders a lot of cakes, cookies and sweets to be delivered specifically by Steve so he puts them in his van and heads to the big house on the edge of town.
There he finally meets Billy, he’s a series of contradictions just like everyone said but he has very interesting ideas on Omegas and he listens to every word Steve says plus he talks constantly about children and how he bought such a big house because he wants to fill it with children, he loves them so much, how can anyone go through life and not want children?
Steve manages to resist him that day but all the things that he said make his head spin, he finds himself looking at children’s clothes when he goes shopping, he buys a small stuffed animal and sets it by his bed and that weekend he gives away free cookies and buns to every child that comes into his bakery.
He can’t stop thinking about children then Billy shows up at the bakery and Steve feels a little flutter low down in his stomach and realises that he’s not thinking about broaching the subject with his husband, he wants to discuss it more with Billy and he feels a little ashamed but Billy is happy to talk about children. He tells Steve that he’s jealous of his status as he has the ability to have children and that’s the greatest gift on earth, he should be proud. Steve feels like a dam within him has burst, all those feelings that he kept locked away so tightly that he wouldn’t let himself dream of, he can’t stop them now and he doesn’t want to.
He ends up giving in to Billy, he’s never been with an Alpha before and it’s more amazing than he ever felt possible, Billy seems to understand him on every level, he also teaches him about magic and how not to be ashamed of it. Billy tells him that he loves him and Steve decides to leave his husband, who doesn’t take it well and starts trouble for him in town telling everyone that Steve cheated on him with Billy just because he was interested in the money and everyone knows what male Omegas are like.
Steve is heartbroken but he just stays away from the town but his bakery starts to suffer and nobody wants him to volunteer anymore and some of his loneliness returns and Billy is furious. He gets Steve to sit and think about his ex-husband and everything he did to wrong him from leaving him alone for work to refusing the idea of children. Steve lets the rage of the last weeks flow through him, how sad he feels, the anger and the disappointment until he feels that same rush. (You could do a scene similar to the film with cherries or just have him drop dead of a heart attack or something.)
Steve learns of his husband's death and people seeing how distraught he is their sympathy for him returns, they remember how lonely he was and they rally around him. Steve knows that Billy had something to with his husband’s death and he decides that he needs a little time alone but he also discovers that he’s pregnant, what will he do? He still feels drawn to Billy but feels like he broke his trust also.
Billy does not take kindly to being ignored by Steve, he belongs to him now, Billy loves him and he isn’t going to let him go without a fight.
You can go in different ways after this depending on whether you want to follow the film more closely or not, Billy using Steve’s fear against him to make him return is always a way to go. Will Steve use a spell to keep Billy away? I think he would try because he would fear for the safety of his child but Billy would never give up and eventually Steve would let him back when he sees how much Billy cares for them both. Cue them living their perfect life out in the giant house, Steve still running his bakery between pregnancies and Billy’s love and obsession for Steve growing stronger every day.
Would Steve ever discover who Billy really was in this story? Or would he just believe him to be another Witch? Would Billy teach the children magic? Would they use it for nefarious purposes?

first line meme! tagged by @quolant
rules: list the first lines of your last 20 stories. see if there are any patterns. then tag your favorite authors.
this is not gonna be my “last 20 stories” but my favorites i guess?
published works (that I still like lol):
1. of spots and ridges:
The thing was that it should make her mad.
2. rewrite a memory:
“You know, Hera,” Maxwell said casually, though there was a certain tension in her words that put Hera a bit on edge, “you can call me Alana.”
3. it takes a village:
Deanna looked around her quarters, finding herself at a loss.
4. when I looked to myself I was somebody else:
The door chimed, interrupting the log Sisko was making.
5. my own half of this mess
Bea makes an honest to god effort to not call Brenda.
6. elphie isn’t dead
So. Truck driving. Yeah.
7. fuck it. untitled amy&toby fic
amy and toby meet on some doomed campaign that he's running, and she's fundraising for, and they both know it's doomed but that doesn't stop them from trying.
which means I need… 13 unpublished ones? oof.
tww:
8. hard to be soft (part 1 of the Amy fic)
Amelia Gardner is raised with the name of a father she’s never met, but her mom says she’s got his eyes, and when she’s old enough for it, his wit, his career.
9. tough to be tender (part 2 of the Amy fic) (which yep, you guessed it, is the post canon part)
They hit the ground running, starting January 21st.
10. we’ll stumble together until we learn to dance (the cj/andy spin-off)
CJ doesn’t actually hate fundraisers, they’re just long and boring and there’s so many of them, and so many people who expect her to remember their names when they don’t know hers.
11. missing scene from amy fic (wrong perspective)
There’s a hand in hers and it hurts and there’s a hand on her other forearm and there’s a hand on her back and none of them are Amy’s.
12. fuck it andy gets a childhood too
Sharon is two years older than Andy, and two inches shorter than her by the time Andy starts high school.
13. magic-ish au
“So, what’s yours?” Donna says softly, the hint of a smile on her lips until it’s not, because she feels a shift.
14. the cj/amy one
Amy’s four years out of law school, climbing the ladder of NOW, when she meets CJ Cregg at a fundraiser.
15. 2nd person law school au trans josh feat amy
It’s awkward to sit across the table from a woman you barely know but who’s constantly in your apartment, as she sips on burnt coffee and reads the newspaper and you try to study.
other:
16. be the raft in the eye of this storm (w359):
It’s finally all over, they’re back, they’re home, they’re on Earth and everything should be okay and everything is so so wrong.
17. take me through the darkness (the martian):
Shockingly enough, the guilt and grief of a dead crew member— not to mention friend— under her command made it hard for Lewis to sleep.
18. i could fix the witches of eastwick
At the end of it all, there’s them, the three of them, and, god help them, ten children, a very large house.
19. some sort of b7 (voy)
She’s not entirely sure why she says it, because nine times out of ten, she can barely stand working with Seven.
20. one of many attempts to write gay big little lies fanfiction
Jane had to relieve her babysitter and so did Madeline, who also had to make sure a very drunk Ed got home alright, and Bonnie was shaking almost as badly as Celeste, repeatedly reaching for her neck.
there’s definitely like some patterns but im having trouble articulating them. i think this also just kind of highlights that i like to drop into a scene without exposition usually. usually. i’m really really awful at tagging or remembering who writes or anything like that so if you wanna do it, consider yourself tagged!!

As a theater student, which roles in which plays best suit your f/os, and which would be coerced into doing it?
HAHAHA this idea is so funny to me dfnkjbgfnkbg
prosciutto is a skye masterson (guys and dolls) type!! suave, sophisticated, finds himself falling in love when he never expected to. he needs to be a little bit coerced, but honestly the ego boost and the costumes do it for him and he ends up loving it. other possible roles for him: gomez in the addams family musical, fred graham (kiss me kate), carl-magnuss (a little night music) . baritenor
abbacchio is the bad-boy type, unfortunately the fact that he’s a bass gets in the way a lot. ends up in old-age makeup a lot of the time. javert in les miserables type. he does not appreciate the irony. other roles: judge turpin (sweeney todd), rochester (jane eyre: the musical), the beast (beauty and the beast). bass who can stretch to baritone.
diavolo is a pretty clear baritone; sometimes, though, weirdly, he seems to access a whole other part of him and he manages some really beautiful tenor notes. it’s amazing how that happens, huh? my first thought for him was hades in hadestown. however, please also consider darryl in witches of eastwick, the phantom in phantom. he’s good at scratchy character voices; would make a great beetlejuice if only he could bring himself to be ‘silly’ onstage. he doesn’t like being looked at that much but in this au he puts up with stage fright.
sorbet is also a bass; he’s a much more imposing type figure than abbacchio, though. abbacchio can pass for a romantic lead and he cannot. they end up in competition sometimes. sorbet’s mainly doing this to keep gelato company and happy. amuse me by imagining him as: lurch (addams family musical), the childcatcher (chitty chitty bang bang), frollo (notre dame de paris), cladwell in urinetown. plays a lot of supporting characters, not a fan of the spotlight.
normally, i like to imagine that gelato can’t sing a note. in a musical theatre au, though, he’s a tenor. pretty, high, clear, soaring voice - ruffled blonde hair, able to make himself look boyish on a whim . . . yeah, gelato’s got this whole thing locked down. gets to play every sweet tenor boy you can imagine; anthony in sweeney todd, raoul in phantom, jack in newsies . . . but also, please imagine the absolute manic delight he’d get from playing gabe in next to normal.

Apparently
once started I just can't stop generating Mystrade Halloween ideas.
Regarding the idea of Mycroft and Greg falling in love starting with a casted spell, that can actually go different ways.
It can be "The Mentalist" s01ep12 AU, where the team investigates the case involving local wiccan witch, with the main theme that magic only works if you believe in it - and there be fluffy comedy vibes.
"Practical Magic" AU for more romantic mood - and one of the protagonists there is a policeman with the badge of force, remember?
"The Addams Family" AU featuring all the 221b gang gone wild and the pinstripe suit gone crazy for a french-speaking beloved.
Or some kind of mashup BBC canon/Terry Pratchett/Neil Gaiman AU, just because. With Miranda Richardson casting as a senior witch of the coven (or it can be Michelle Pfeiffer as I adore Gaiman's "Stardust")
Or total weirdness of "Witches of Eastwick" AU with Eurus turning the Wicked-Witch-of-the-East, summoning Moriarty's spirit to be her lover.
There are even several possible songs playing around in my head as a soundtrack. Such as:
Dusty Springfield - Spooky
Screamin Jay Hawkins - I put a spell on you
Frank Sinatra - Witchcraft
Carlos Santana - Black Magic Woman (the best shamanic melody ever)
I can't promise that I won't come up with a wide range of further crazy ideas in future. Now I blame it on the Fridaythe13th and the upcoming Full Moon.

TRASH MOVIE INSPIRED AU IDEAS 2
The Witches of Eastwick: Nimue and [ Insert Two Other Muses Here ] are all friends from a small judgemental town, suffering from the ‘Three D’s’ - Death, Desertion and Divorce. Either shunned, used or ignored by the rest of their God fearing little community, they find comfort in one another and their little weekend get-togethers. ( What none of them realize is that they are all witches, latent powers waiting to take flight. ) One rainy night, over too much alcohol, they make a game out of dreaming up their ideal partner. Lo and behold, [ Insert Third Muse Here ] sweeps into town. This is a poly plot.
Wimbledon: Nimue du Lac is a tennis rookie, making waves on the sports scene through unbridled ambition and raw talent. ( That and the meticulous management/guardianship of her adoptive mother, Morgaine. ) Everyone expects her to go far. [ Insert Muse Here ] is a tried and true player, having grasped at glory only to fall short time and time again. Win or lose, they intend this to be their last season. When fate forces them to cross paths, what ensues is more than a game or a trophy, but a journey where the following questions must be answered: What do you really want? How far are you willing to go to get it?
The Scorpion King: [ Insert Muse Here ] is an emperor in the making, conquering land after land with iron and blood. Nimue is captured from the sacred isles of Avalon, brought forward as a witch and seer for [ Muse’s ] pleasure. She parlays her way into a position as an adviser, using her Sight to lead their armies to victory time and time again. Nimue secures her safety in all matters by creating the idea that her powers are tied to her virginity and if her body is used, her vision no longer can be. ( I would also be interested in doing this in the actual POV of the movie, where a warrior/bounty hunter/whatever tries to kidnap/kill the conqueror’s witch. )
The Ninth Gate: [ Insert Muse Here ] is hired to track down the fabled relics of the Holy Grail and Arthur’s sword Excalibur. Initially believing their mission to be a farce, they set forth on their journey a non-believer only to be greeted by chaos and strange occurrences at every corner. Nimue always seems to show up when the hours seem darkest, obviously following [ Muse ] and their journey but keeping her own motives to herself.
Dark Shadows: Nimue is a witch pretending to be a normal maiden ( possibly because of persecution/witch hunts/etc ) who falls in love with [ Insert Muse Here ] after they charm and seduce their way into her heart. Believing the feeling to be mutual, she is ultimately taken for a fool and betrayed. In an act of vengeance, she turns [ Muse ] into a ravenous monster who begins to self-destruct and inevitably destroys/murders everything they held dear. Rather than allowing them the death that they want, Nimue convinces the townspeople to lock [ Muse ] away in the darkness with only their thoughts as company for however many hundred years. Construction in the modern age digs up the bones of the past, allowing [ Muse ] freedom once more.

I have always been a fan of dark fantasy comedy movies. So I think a good au to do, would be bedazzled. Billy as a nerdy guy gets seven wishes for his soul. I mean all the possibilities. Plus another good one could be the witches of east wick. Steve as a witch who just found his power and Billy as the handsome devil who has come to seduce and control him.
Spoilers For Bedazzled (2000)
I haven’t seen Bedazzled in years but if I remember correctly the devil sabotages all of his wishes so that they don’t work out for him and I was thinking it could be interesting if they followed the seven deadly sins, they might in the film the only one I remember is he wants to be sensitive maybe and he ends up crying at the sunset. So I think for his trial wish, the devil should bring out his better physical attributes, I’m going to say that Billy is already pretty, with a good body but he lacks confidence may be due to Neil and so he doesn’t dress well and hides in a corner, always trying to make himself the smallest thing in the room. The devil fixes his clothes and hair and shows him that he’s attractive by walking down the street and seeing people’s reactions to him, this doesn’t change how he feels but he does have a little more confidence and dresses better as a result.
I also can’t help but think of Robin as the devil in this instance like a sarcastic lesbian who low key is always scoffing at Billy’s wishes and rolling her eyes at how pathetic he is but she has to keep him hopeful so she’s kind when it suits her agenda. God can be whoever you want, I dunno if you want to stick with more biblical themes making God Robin’s dad or if you want to think of them as two wayward angels who have their own side bet going and are secretly in love with each other so are trying to win the bet to impress the other so you could make it Heather, for instance.
I’m imagining the wishes taking place in an alternate reality so that he can get a taste of them so Robin can make the reality anything, these could almost be a bunch of small AU stories within this larger story. So just a quick thought of what some seven deadly sins wishes could be and how they could be sabotaged:
Pride: For Steve to want to be seen with him in public holding his hand but in reality Billy is famous and Steve is only using him to get his own name out there while he has an affair with another man called Pierre who is a lot more romantic than Billy and he catches them together hidden in a corner of the club that they’re at where Steve finally tells him the truth that he’s only using him, he would never be seen with him in any other circumstance.
Lust: He wishes that Steve was so turned on by him that he can’t stand it, Steve in this reality wants Billy all the time driving him to the brink of exhaustion, nothing he does satisfies Steve, he always wants more until Billy can’t take anymore.
Gluttony: Steve to be so hungry for him that he needs him, Steve claims that he’s on a diet but insists on making Billy a huge meal and a cake, he seems very disappointed when Billy doesn’t want any. Billy thinks about kissing the pout off his face and replacing it with one of gasping ecstasy. So to please Steve, he eats until he’s near bursting happy when Steve seems to get amorous only to discover that he’s trying to eat him. Maybe Steve is a vampire with a sweet tooth?
Sloth: For Steve to want to do nothing else but stay with Billy all the time, maybe he thinks about them lying in bed together but when he goes to this reality Steve is a sleepy baby who is completely dependent on Billy to care for him.
Greed: Steve to be greedy for his love, then he wakes up in a reality where Steve is completely enamoured with him, they share a lovely night together where Steve seems happy and satisfied. He gets up the next morning to leave for work but Robin makes him forget his wallet and when he returns to the house Steve is with someone else acting the same way he did with Billy, he needs constant attention or else he gets lonely as he’s so hungry for affection.
Wrath: Billy is a little obsessed with Steve and there’s a dark part of him that wants to punish him for not immediately liking Billy back so he wants a scenario where Steve is at his mercy but that Steve enjoys a little kink so he’s happy for Billy to be a little rough. So he has rough sex with Steve where he says all the possessive things that have been in his mind all this time and Steve is receptive much to his delight but it turns out that Steve works in a dungeon and he gets paid to be a sub so even though he seemed receptive it was only because that was what Billy paid for and he’s cold and dismissive to him afterwards.
Envy: Because he’s watched Steve from afar for so long he wants him to be envious of anyone that Billy interacts with as Billy has felt this way for a long time and knows that if he was given the chance to be with Steve he’d jump at it only for the people that he interacts with to end up dead but Steve doesn’t seem to want to be with Billy he just doesn’t want anyone else to have him either.
Or you can follow the film’s kind of wishes just general ideas that are twisted by the devil to make sure that Billy never gets what he wants.
As time goes on Billy becomes more and more despondent thinking that Steve will never love him in any reality but the devil keeps stringing him along with hope. If I remember correctly in this film at least in the remake they make his last wish be that the girl has a happy life so I think that’s a good last wish as in this version it turns out that for Steve to have a happy life he just needs Billy. So Billy doesn’t have to give up his soul and he gets his wish in the end also.
Could also have Billy interacting with the real Steve in-between where little hints are given that Steve is noticing Billy and reacting to him which gets Billy’s hopes up and fuels his hunger for more when the devil turns up to quickly interrupt so that he’ll make a wish.
Spoilers For The Witches Of Eastwick (1987)
I love the Witches Of Eastwick it’s a great film I love how normally in films like this the devil is depicted as being beautiful and alluring kind of like Elizabeth Hurley in Bedazzled but the Witches Of Eastwick doesn’t do this as Jack Nicholson’s character is described quite unkindly by the female character’s they don’t find him appealing at all but when they are alone with him he understands them on a level that no one else does.
So I love how this subverts expectations but also in the case of Billy it aligns with how some people in fandom see him I’ve seen him called a trash rat and king rat, I’m taking this to be because in Stranger Things he’s shown as being covered in beer and spit, he’s sweaty a lot of the time, the whole tongue thing and he works out while smoking and drinking beer.
So I like the idea of Billy being very attractive but he’s kinda gross too, he also acts towards Steve in a way that he finds offputting. Steve is only coming into his power and he just dismisses Billy but he keeps showing up and eventually they end up alone and Billy turns out to be this really charming person who seems to be able to see right into Steve’s soul and Steve starts to fall for him and Billy helps Steve with his powers. Could have Steve talk to Robin about the perfect person for him and Billy turns up and ticks all the boxes which he eventually realises after he’s already involved with Billy.
Could also be Alpha Beta Omega story if you’re looking to stick a little closer to the story with Steve being the perfect Omega for Billy who’s the devil and wants to bring a child into the world, maybe due to his own upbringing Steve wants to have children but is afraid that the psychological trauma inflicted on him by his parent’s neglect would make him a poor parent so he has sworn off Alpha’s and even though he desperately wants children he chooses not to. Or he could have wanted to have children but due to being a male Omega, it’s incredibly rare so he went to a fertility specialist to be checked and they told him there was no chance. So he starts to develop his witch powers but he doesn’t want to be any more different than he already is as a male Omega so he keeps them on the down-low.
Could have Steve in a relationship where that person is happy not to have children, they don’t even want a pet as they’re very career-driven and are looking to work their way to the top with no distractions or are just a cold person, someone like his mom who is all about appearances. So Steve keeps his wish close to his heart, trying to ignore how desperately he wants it, maybe he works in a career where he can be nurturing and that appeases the pain a little. Then Billy comes into town and he’s this overly familiar Alpha and he rubs Steve the wrong way but Billy talks to Steve about children every time he sees him, igniting the little spark in Steve’s heart. Eventually, they have a heart to heart and Steve succumbs to Billy’s charms falling pregnant right away even though he was on suppressants or was unable to have children and that helps Billy in making Steve his.
So at some point, you could do that someone is judging Steve for being with Billy, mainly because it’s a small town and Billy isn’t subtle and Billy kills them because they’re causing Steve trouble. This makes Steve afraid of his powers as his guilt rises and he wants a little time alone but Billy doesn’t take this well at all. So like in the film Billy becomes desperate and punishes Steve for abandoning him could take one of the punishments from the film such as Sukie and the physical pain she’s put through. Or you could do a more psychological one like Steve feeling more alone. To stop the pain, he must return to Billy but does he then perform a spell to keep him away? Does it work? Can he truly live without him now after having been alone for so long?
In terms of other dark fantasy comedy movies have you seen Death Becomes Her? (1992) I can totally see them as Helen and Madeline, bitter rivals so consumed with each other that they can’t see their true feelings.
Or another film that is a little heavier on the horror would be Re-Animator (1985) with Billy as the obsessive incredibly smart Herbert West character who is all about his work until he meets the beautiful doctor Steve Harrington, the Dan Cain character who has enough heart for both of them but he’s in love with someone else which frustrates Billy who has problems of his own in the form of Doctor Hill.

Top 5 Favorite Books With Witches
Tumblr media
What is it about witches that we find so compelling?
We all know the stereotypes: an evil crone with a cackling laugh and warts on an ugly honker of a nose, generally using her magic to scare – if not out-and-out harm little kids.
Or she’s the stunning femme fatale, the seductive sorceress wielding magical potions to bring men to their knees so that she might usurp their power for herself. Neither of those stereotypes are particularly positive, and yet the allure of the witch endures.
Perhaps it’s the more positive stereotypes that aren’t always mentioned, but still often present – the sisterhood of covens, the importance of family traditions, the inner strength that can come from honoring ones’ ancestral heritage. And, increasingly in today’s world, the wisdom learned from working with nature and respecting the power of the earth.
Maybe it’s as simple as the witch being the OG feminist icon, a powerful woman (hence the negative stereotypes) who defines herself on her own terms in a world doing its best to strip her of her power. Whatever the reason, I’m drawn to witches in popular culture and I know I’m not alone. So here are five of my favorite witchy books...

The Witching Hour
by Anne Rice
This is one of my favorite books ever, and certainly my favorite by Anne Rice. Granted, there are no incantations or potions, and these witches derive most of their power from a ghost, but there are psychic powers like telepathy and telekinesis. Mostly, though, I love the mystery and history of it all – it’s just as much a story of New Orleans as it is family saga of the Mayfair witches.
Synopsis: Demonstrating once again her gift for spellbinding storytelling, Anne Rice makes real for us a great dynasty of four centuries of witches–a family given to poetry and incest, murder and philosophy, a family that over the ages is itself haunted by a powerful, dangerous, and seductive being called Lasher who haunts the Mayfair women.
Moving in time from today’s New Orleans and San Francisco to long-ago Amsterdam and the France of Louis XIV, from the coffee plantations of Port-au-Prince to Civil War New Orleans and back to today, Anne Rice has spun a mesmerizing tale that challenges everything we believe in.
“A huge and sprawling tale of horror.” THE NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW

Season of the Witch
by Natasha Mostert
I love this book about two beautiful, wealthy sisters living alone in their Victorian familial home, probably for all those reasons – I don’t have a sister myself, and I’m forever fascinated by the different portrayals of sisterhood. Plus, there’s alchemy and remote viewing, a realistic portrayal of computer hacking and corporate espionage, and a pretty cool take on memory palaces...
Synopsis: Season of the Witch tells the story of Gabriel Blackstone: hacker, information thief, and skilled “remote viewer.” Asked by a former lover to investigate the disappearance of her stepson, Gabriel’s suspicions fall on Minnaloushe and Morrighan Monk, two beautiful sisters who live in a rambling Victorian house in London.
Independently wealthy, the sisters spend their time dabbling in alchemy and the ancient Art of Memory—invented by the Greeks and used by alchemists and magi such as Giordano Bruno and Leonardo Da Vinci. The sisters are white, or “solar,” witches, who aim to use alchemy not to turn lead into gold but to attain ultimate knowledge and therefore ultimate power. Gabriel soon becomes convinced that his client’s son had been murdered and that one of the women is the killer. But which one?
As Gabriel infiltrates the world of the sisters, he finds himself drawn inexorably deeper— becoming entranced even as he realizes that he is in mortal danger. When he is caught snooping, Gabriel must race to unlock their secrets before they can retaliate. To save himself— and the one he loves, presuming she is not guilty—Gabriel will have to fight one of the sisters within the landscape of her own mind.

Unholy Ghosts
by Stacia Kane
The world of the Downside Ghosts urban fantasy series is just so cool. It’s gritty and dark and dystopian, with a lead character who is a tattooed, ghost-hunting witch with strong magic powers… and equally strong addiction issues, complete with accompanying low self-esteem and self-loathing. All of which makes her vulnerable and sad and real, even though the world she inhabits is not. Plus, she lives in a former church with stained glass windows, and how cool is that?
Synopsis: THE DEPARTED HAVE ARRIVED.
The world is not the way it was. The dead have risen, and the living are under attack. The powerful Church of Real Truth, in charge since the government fell, has sworn to reimburse citizens being harassed by the deceased. Enter Chess Putnam, a fully tattooed witch and freewheeling ghost hunter. She’s got a real talent for banishing the wicked dead.
But Chess is keeping a dark secret: She owes a lot of money to a murderous drug lord named Bump, who wants immediate payback in the form of a dangerous job that involves black magic, human sacrifice, a nefarious demonic creature, and enough wicked energy to wipe out a city of souls. Toss in lust for a rival gang leader and a dangerous attraction to Bump’s ruthless enforcer, and Chess begins to wonder if the rush is really worth it. Hell, yeah.

The Witches of Eastwick
by John Updike
This book about small-town witches is often hailed as a feminist classic, and just as often criticized for being misogynistic. Personally, I’m probably too biased to say either way –  I read this book as a girl right after seeing the movie, so book and film are inextricably linked in my mind. And Cher reminds me of my grandmother, who was beautiful and “witchy” in her own way with her homemade concoctions for glowing skin and non-frizzy hair, so I can’t help but to see my grandmother in this. Plus, I am a sucker for prose porn, and John Updike gives good prose...
Synopsis: Toward the end of the Vietnam era, in a snug little Rhode Island seacoast town, wonderful powers have descended upon Alexandra, Jane, and Sukie, bewitching divorcées with sudden access to all that is female, fecund, and mysterious. Alexandra, a sculptor, summons thunderstorms; Jane, a cellist, floats on the air; and Sukie, the local gossip columnist, turns milk into cream.
Their happy little coven takes on new, malignant life when a dark and moneyed stranger, Darryl Van Horne, refurbishes the long-derelict Lenox mansion and invites them in to play. Thenceforth scandal flits through the darkening, crooked streets of Eastwick—and through the even darker fantasies of the town’s collective psyche.
Tumblr media
Labyrinth Lost
by Zoraida Cordova
This is a YA urban fantasy book about a Latina bruja. From Brooklyn. Who happens to be bisexual. I mean… all the casual diversity in this book was just amazing to read! I even overlooked the love triangle because of it – and that’s a trope I tend to hate in YA. Probably because it didn’t take over the story, and also because there were so many things I loved in this book: sisters and family and ancestors, botanicas and magic, all the culture and mythology and an adventure through the Underworld that was just awesome. This was only the first book in this series, but I can’t wait for more.
Synopsis: Nothing says Happy Birthday like summoning the spirits of your dead relatives.
Alex is a bruja, the most powerful witch in a generation…and she hates magic. At her Deathday celebration, Alex performs a spell to rid herself of her power. But it backfires. Her whole family vanishes into thin air, leaving her alone with Nova, a brujo boy she can’t trust. A boy whose intentions are as dark as the strange marks on his skin.
The only way to get her family back is to travel with Nova to Los Lagos, a land in-between, as dark as Limbo and as strange as Wonderland…
Your turn: what's your favorite witchy read?
