Red Flag Checklist
Okay witches, let's have a round table.
When you're reading or contemplating the purchase of a book on modern witchcraft or paganism, what are some red and green flags that you look for?
I'll start.
Red Flags:
Disreputable Author - If the author is either a known source of bad information or bad behavior, or one of those "house names" that certain companies use, that's a no for me.
"New Age White Witch" Syndrome - If a text has a more-than-incidental or very deliberate focus on culturally appropriative practices ("Use this exotic voodoo doll ritual to hex your ex"), outdated terminology ("black magic," that G slur we don't use, etc), antisemitic bullshit (Lilith is not a pagan goddess), or anti-science rhetoric ("Essential oils are better than pills!") And yes this means the ever-expanding list of racist dogwhistles too.
Poor Understanding or Misrepresentation of History - If someone's repeating Murrayisms or insisting things are ancient that definitely aren't (POTATO GODDESS), that says to me that either the author didn't bother to do their research or they don't know what they're talking about.
Insistence on One Correct Way - If I encounter anything resembling "this is the only TRUE way," the book's going out the window. The more so if the author is citing their personal opinions or UPGs as fact.
Insistence on Gendering Everything - If a book insists on assigning a binary gender to everything (outside of citing a historical context), or is boomboxing ~*SACRED WOMYN'S WOMB MAGYCK*~ throughout, or even if it's just overly preoccupied with fertility and childbearing as part of the "natural" life cycle, I'm immediately putting it down. (This is more of a personal one, in a way? But it's a red flag for TERFy things too.)
Lack of Sources - If there's no bibliography, no works cited, no recommended reading, or just a really flimsy list that's rife with internet links or problematic titles, that's not a good sign.
Green Flags:
Inclusive Language - If the author refers to the reader or an unidentified person as "they" or "them," that's a good sign. Double points if it's in a context that you'd normally expect to see gendered elsewhere. There's always room for gendered language when it's appropriate, but to me, it's refreshing when an author doesn't assume the reader identifies as female.
Health and Safety Warnings - If there are notes for safe handling or harvesting of potentially harmful herbs, or warnings about health hazards (i.e. keep this away from persons who are pregnant or nursing), or reminders to be careful with fire and glass and the like, this is a good sign. To me, it means the author has a practical mindset and is at least keeping real-world limitations in mind.
Lots of Sources...and GOOD Sources - If the book has a nice fat bibliography, especially if there are mundane sources as well as magical ones, and if those sources are solid? A+. Double points if there's an index or footnotes and citations throughout the text.
Lack of "Guru" Mindset - If the author encourages the reader to take what they've learned and continue to do research on their own, that's a good sign. Encouragement of critical thinking is excellent, and also the admission that there is more than one way of Doing The Magical Thing. (Hi Lee)
Good Formatting - A book should be visually appealing, but it should also be easy to read and formatted properly, in a way that makes sense. I like to see clean margins, good spacing, and clear text. Page decorations and pictures and fancy title fonts are fine, so long as they don't make the book difficult to decipher.
(Okay, your turn!)

Thinking about writing a book on chaos witchcraft. Maybe expanding and writing some on other types of witchcraft. Would you buy something like that? I’m probably going to write it anyways but wondering if I should put it on the market…

☽ Closet Witch Tips ☾
Hi, everyone! I spent years living as a closet witch and wishing I had more freedom to practice. Nowadays my living situation is different which allows me to do things I couldn’t before, but I know that there are many witches out there who are still struggling with this so I decided to share some tips on how to practice in the broom closet
Keep in mind these are all suggestions, you don’t need to have an altar, a book of shadows, practice divination, etc if you don’t want to
Altars
(Disclaimer: you don’t need an altar to practice, but in case you still desire to have one)
Inside a jewelry box
Shoe box
Tin can
Matchbox
In a video game such as animal crossing, the sims, minecraft, etc
The #SelfCare app has a little altar in which you can decorate with crystals, herbs and tarot cards
Notebook (then add the items by drawing them or maybe making collages)
Make/buy a little terrarium (artificial or real)
I’ve heard of people using plant vases as altars as well
Divination
(In case you can’t buy tarot decks/runes/etc)
Make your own tarot cards/oracle cards (it can be a little tiring but it’s what I did when I couldn’t buy my own)
Use playing cards as minor arcanas to read tarot
Pendulums (doesn’t have to be an actual crystal pendulum as you see on witchy stores, anything on a string will do)
Make runes out of seashells, rocks, clay, etc
Flip a coin for yes and no questions
Give dice divination a try
Deity Worship/Work
Wear jewelry that reminds you of them (ex: sun necklace for apollo, moon ring for artemis, etc)
Wear their associated colors
Practice devotional acts such as reading about them, praying, drawing something for them, writing them a letter, something related to your deity’s domains
Keep a notebook in which you can write their myths/domains/associations/etc or write prayers/poems, make drawings of things they like, etc
Keep a small altar
Watch movies that remind you of them
Play video games associated with their domains
Study something they have domain over
Make them a playlist
Make them a pinterest board
Make a devotional blog
Light a candle in their honor (it’s ok if you can only use LED candles)
Keep something associated with them on your desk/shelf
Keep a crystal associated with them near you
Get a small statuette/toy of one of their sacred animals to represent them (on your shelf/desk, on a small altar if you have one, etc)
Make a little deity jar and keep it near you
Have a devotional plant for them
Spend time in nature in their honor
Take care of yourself
Book of Shadows
Notebook
Notes app
Google docs or google keep
Tumblr blog (either private or public, up to you)
Somewhere on your phone/computer
Simple Practices
Enchant your jewelry with intention
Use color correspondence in your clothes/makeup
Meditating
Open your windows to cleanse your room
Keep crystals around you
Physically clean your space
Take showers/baths with the intention of cleansing yourself
Try practicing some kitchen magic if you cook
Enchant your food/drink
Make sigils
Keep plants in your space associated with your intention (ex: protection, creativity, etc)
Keep in mind that you’re not any less of a witch for not being able to do certain things, your practice is still valid
☽ Feel free to reblog with more tips! ☾

Fun witchy things to spice up your school/uni/college year
School/uni starts in late Jan/late Feb here in Australia so leave me alone if you're already in the middle of your school year lol /hl. These are just a few things I did when I was in HS and intend to do now that I'm going to university next year.
Enchant your water bottle with cleansing/purifying energy. The water will cleanse your energy this way. I do this to help me chill the fuck out. I do not do well with academics and the last thing I need is to pick up other people's stress.
Draw sigils for academic success in the back of your notebooks and planners.
Try binding your hair or veiling this school year! It doesn't have to be for religious reasons, it can just be to protect your energy.
Colour code your books or folders to what you need from each subject and set the intention accordingly! For example, red for math because you need confidence and strength or green for science because you need some extra luck in that subject.
Do you remember the erasers with yes and no written on them? Yeah! Make one of those and flip it for on the fly divination! It actually works if you put enough intention into it and it's a fun way to pass time.
Use colour magick in your outfits and shoes/shoe laces! This is a lot of effort so I've rarely do it but I've heard a lot of good things from people who regularly do. Just be careful that you don't accidentally send a nasty lace code message with your docks (or other boots) and shoe laces.
More colour magick but get coloured pens that correspond with your wanted intention! The ink could be coloured or just the outside, it's up to you.
If you pack your own lunch try your hand at some kitchen magick this year! Deli meats, bread, butter, pasta, tofu, etc all have their own uses and meanings. You can do some amazing stuff with food! I really recommend you try it at least once :)
Set your computer's folders names to affirmations or intentions! "I have incredible grades" "I respect my physical and mental needs" "I have the perfect work/school/life balance" are all examples.
This is less about school/uni/college but enchant any jewellery you wear with protection or dedicate it to a deity!
Again, not super school related but do a glamour spell with your skin care and/or make up. It just puts me in a good mood and sets the tone for the day.
I hope you enjoyed! As always, suggestions and tips are more than welcome :)

Wenclair - One Shot -
"I get paid in Favours"
I could not get this idea out of my head, I must have seen a prompt or something somewhere and it's been floating around in my subconscious every since. So thought I'd write a little one-shot to get it out ... Hope you enjoy 😋
"WEDNESDAY ADDAMS?!" Enid screamed causing a few heads to turn including the referred to Wednesday Addams who just scrunch her eyebrows from across the corridor and turned her attention back to her conversation.
"Shhhhh shhh" Yoko hushed her loud friend, darting her eyes around in a small panic "Shut up" she whispered in a harsh tone pushing Enid into the closet behind them away from the prying ears of nevermore students.
"Are you crazy?!" Enid squeaked out in pure fear "Like did somebody spike your blood bag today with crazy juice!" She asked scared, serious and suspicious of her best friends motives.
"Girl chill it was just a suggestion." She gritted her fangs and rolled her eyes at her over frantic bestie.
"Listen I know I need help but that girl is severely unstable and strangely enough the most sought after girl in the school if I ask her for a favour do you know what kind of debt I would need to repay?" Enid panicked all flustered just from the mere mention of the raven haired goddess that plagued the halls of Nevermore.
"She's not all bad" Yoko refutes, a certain knowing smile spreading across her face.
Wednesday Addams was the newest of the Nevermore bunch to be admitted to the school grounds as an outcast and Enid had taken it upon herself to try and get to know everything about her.
She was a force to be reckoned with. And to Enid she was A monotone little ball of madness and mystery that had put the entire school under some kind of witchy spell, she was sure of it.
Since arriving, Wednesday Addams had been hunted, haunted and the victim of an attempted murder... Twice. And even so everyone at Nevermore turned a blind eye allowing her to run a riot across her perfectly protected school. She even had people swooning over her like she was some perverse prize to be one.
You see Enid was the eyes and ears of Nevermore, the go to girl for all the gossip and she always knew everything. But Wednesday Addams remained this silent, closed book of nothingness and that didn't sit right with the blonde girl.
Since being here Enid hadn't avoided the sinister girl at all costs like others originally had. Instead, after every advance she made towards Wednesday had been promptly shut down and her last attempt landing her in the infirmary she made a point of staying as far away from her as possible. This would go unnoticed by Wednesday as she just wasn't interested in thrusting herself into a drama filled void.
There was a thin line between charming and just plain rude, and Enid began to make the distinction easily after only a few weeks.
"I can't ask her for help Yoko" she deflected once again her eyes flicking across her surroundings in a panicked manner "It's suicide!" She whispered again her eyes glazed stepping towards Yoko.
"You need her Enid" Yoko shrugged. "I don't know what else to tell you" she placed a comforting hand on her shoulder and half smiled at the werewolf before, turning around, opening the door and leaving Enid alone with her chaotic mess of a mind buzzing with all the terrifying situations she was about to doom herself too.
....
Later on that day Enid was sat about 3 tables across from the infamous Wednesday Addams trying to muster up the courage to go and talk to her.
She had spent the better part of 2 hours trying to figure out a solution to her little problem but had been unsuccessful and finally accepted that she needed help from the enemy. After noticing her retreat to the library for her free period she had followed her silently, getting ready to ask for a favour.
She looked towards Wednesday who was sat comfortable reading a novel, enjoying the sweet solitude of silence. Then she looked away frustrated, then looked back hopefully before again giving into her anxiety and abandoning her task.
She stared at the ground "Come on Enid don't be an idiot just go and TALK to her" she scolded, whispering to herself. She took a deep breath squeezed her eyes shut and then looked back at Wednesday.
But she wasn't there.
It was as if she had vanished into thin air and in her place an empty chair sat.
"Talk to who?" She heard a voice from behind her and she immediately went into defense mode, her claws retracting and her fangs making an unwanted appearance.
She had recognised the voice and froze unable to peel her eyes away from table to turn and address the girl.
Wednesday,it seemed had freaking teleported behind her because how else, just stood there expectantly waiting for a response.
"Oh have I intruded in a private conversation between you and the invisible man I wasn't aware he was a part of the Nevermore student body" Wednesday remarked a little irritated that the wolf girl had ignored her.
Sure, it wasn't like she was invited into this conversation but Wednesday enjoyed the feeling of being unwanted and making a situation unnecessarily uncomfortable. It amused her to no end especially when she watched the werewolf bite back.
"What's it to you!" She barked out, placing her hand on the back of her chair and turning to shoot daggers at the rude student.
"ooo she barks but does she bite?" Wednesday smirked. It almost felt like she was flirting which only sent Enid's brain into panic mode, doomed never to return back to normal.
"I-uhh" she stuttered out, mentally screaming at herself for sounding so stupid.
"You've been staring at me for the last 20 minutes I would like to know why" Wednesday raised an eyebrow. She had felt the unnerving sense of someone watching her and had immediately recognised it to be Enid after no longer than 30 seconds of her continual staring.
Enid stood up, straightening out her soft striped sleek jumper nervously.
"H-how did you even know that?" She questioned. She was under the impression that she had remained elusive but clearly she was wrong. Or Wednesday just had these incredible witchy senses that helped her be astonishingly perceptive of her environment.
"An eye for an eye?" Wednesday negotiated "You answer my question I'll answer yours" she explained further with a slight nod.
"I was just- I kind of-I just needed to ask" she attempted to begin a few times before mentally face-palming and giving up completely.
"Interesting" Wednesday placed her hand on her chin contemplating the possibilities for Enid's nervousness. This was the first she had ever spoken to her without malicious intent but she had always been rather intrigued by the bubbly creature. And not just because she was the only one in this wretched place who didn't actively avoid her or admire her from afar when she first arrived at the school... Well usually, today being the obvious exception.
"Listen I just- I need your help okay I was told you were the one to go to for ummm certain items" Enid managed to mutter out.
Wednesday understood now but was still encapsulated by the reaction she was getting from the half turned wolf in front of her.
"Come with me" Wednesday tilted her head to direct the girl and wandered into the library stacks, smirking to herself when she heard Enid behind her emit a low growl but still follow her anyway.
"What do you need?" She asked unbothered.
"Suppressants" Enid said, finally a normal conversation she breathed out relaxing. "The full moon is tomorrow" she needlessly explained.
"You don't have any?" Wednesday asked, perplexed.
"No" Enid shrugged.
"But you're a werewolf" Wednesday had to suppress the chuckle that bubbled in the back of her throat like acid.
"I've never fully turned so I've never needed them before but it feels different this time" she explained annoyed "Listen can you get me some or not? I was told you could" she snapped a little bit, discontented once again. This conversation was becoming more difficult by the millisecond and Enid was becoming increasingly more discouraged.
"Don't believe everything you hear" Wednesday mocked, making an obvious jab at Enid's tendency to gossip.
"So that's a No" she sighed in annoyance. So she had risked her sanity for absolutely nothing.
"I didn't say that" Wednesday spoke and Enid perked up noticeably.
"So you can?" she didn't even care that her little outburst of emotions caused Wednesday to wince, she was just happy that she would finally get a good night's rest.
"Yes but you know everything has a price" Wednesday told her plainly.
"Name it" Enid made no attempt to hide her eagerness and reached out to Wednesday who politely stepped back.
"I get paid in favours when I need you I'll let you know" Wednesday explained, waiting for Enid to agree to her conditions before acknowledging the authenticity of the deal.
"Okay but like I don't do anything criminal" Enid made a disgusted face and shuddered even at the thought.
"How utterly dull" Wednesday cocked an eyebrow, unable to understand why this girl was not enticed by the idea of doing something bad.
"Excuse you do I look dull to you" she gestured to her incredibly colourful outfit and distinct features. She had never been so offended by someone before. The audacity!
"No you look rather..." Wednesday flicked her eyes up and down Enid's body "enticing actually" she decided, her lip twitching quietly.
"Umm...Thanks" Enid was taken aback by the compliment and had to force her guard to remain in place rather than create a fortress around her thoughts. This was confusing.
"You know there are other ways to surpress your animalistic urges" Wednesday wiggled her eyebrows and Enids eyes went wide. Was she flirting? Wednesday can flirt? What was happening?! Enid began to lose it, she wasn't sure how to process what she had just heard.
Her brain went into overdrive. Listen. Everyone at Nevermore knew Enid was a raging homo and having an intimidating yet oddly attractive girl flirt with her only ever forcibly sent into her gay panic mode. Naturally.
But Wednesday Addams? Nooo she wasn't... She couldn't be. And even if she was why would she pursue Enid? Surely a girl whose hobbies included witchcraft, grave digging and murder had no business in Enid's innocent unicorn and rainbow filled world... Right?
She must just be misreading her, its not like she's amazing at reading signals from normal people let alone the bluntest girl she had ever met.
"Like what?" Enid found herself asking and absolutely slapped herself for being so stupid and playing into it. She hadn't even realised she had said it until it came spilling out of her mouth like an untamed river.
"Wouldn't you like to know" Wednesday let a deviant smile dance its way across her lips proudly before walking past Enid leaving her in a flustered and confused state.
She stopped just before passing her, shoulder to shoulder, and spoke "Would you?" She asked and Enid turned her head hesitantly. Looking at Wednesday she suddenly felt her knees go weak as she asked
"Would I what?" smiling nervously.
"Like to know" Wednesday spoke as if what she was talking about was insanely obvious. She stared into her soul for a moment before swallowing hard.
"Ummm" Enid gritted her teeth and extensively avoided the attempted eye contact from Wednesday
"I'll let you think about it" she smirked again, knowing exactly the effect she was having on Enid and relishing in it all.
She then left taking long strides, only stopping to turn back and say " Either way I'll have whatever suppressant you need waiting for you in my dorm tonight, remember you have options" Wednesday fought the urge to wink but commended herself on a beautifully played out flirtatious scene she was sure to write about later.
"8' O'Clock okay?" Enid mumbled out nervously, swallowing the anxious lump that had formed in her now extremely dry throat.
"I look forward to seeing if your bark is worse than your bite" Wednesday teased before leaving Enid all hot and bothered and confused and flustered and all of the words and feelings basically.
Enid just stood there, blinked slowly before throwing herself back into the stack of books for support, closing her eyes and lightly hitting her head off of it in pure embarrassment on how she had handled that situation.
"What the f-" she whispered sliding down into a seated position and letting her thoughts drift to what the night may bring with Wednesday Addams. WEDNESDAY FREAKING ADDAMS.

Only YOU Can Prevent Witchy Fires
Hello witches, workers, and all in between! Your friendly neighborhood Granny is here to teach you a few things about fire safety!
Yes, yes, I know. “But Buggy, this is tumblr! And you're on a boring witchcraft blog! What do we need a lesson on fire safety for? We aren’t in kindergarten!” But trust me! More than one witch has accidentally singed their hair or set their own altar on fire before! Sometimes we get so into the spiritual that we forget to be mindful of the reality around us.
I’m going to go over a bundle of good tips to keep in mind for making a wax seal over that spell jar or burning a few bay leaves or ingredients to release that nonsense into the air! Even a section for the kitchen witches!
Indoor Safety:
*Those annoying fire alarms? Make sure they are operational okay? Change those batteries at least once a year, preferably twice. (If it is something you are in control of.)
*Always use a fire-safe candle holder for candles! Trim down that wick before lighting! I know it seems silly to use a pair of scissors or a wick trimmer, but trimming down that wick will always make that flame much easier to manage. And that flame? If it gets big enough to cause black smoke ALWAYS put it out.
*Always keep the candle in your line of sight, no meditation with an open flame going okay? Also if your candle is big enough to burn for more than four hours...put it out at the 4 hour mark.
*The longer a candle burns the more carbon gathers on the wick itself and that can make the flame get bigger and more unstable. Those ultra-wobbly flames that flicker and waves like one of those wacky inflatable arm flailing tube men? That is something you don’t want.
*Putting out a candle: We don’t recommend putting it out with your fingers no matter how cool it looks. Use a candle snuffer, or blow it out. I promise blowing out a deity candle won’t insult them!
*Another crucial tip is to keep anything that could catch fire a minimum of three feet or 91 centimeters AWAY from the fire source. That includes carpeted flooring, cloth, hair, rugs, altar cloths, papers, books, all sorts of things! Always wear your hair back when working with fire, and wear close fitting clothing that won’t hang or drape into the fire with your movements.
*Another tip given straight from the NSC is to NEVER use candles or other fire sources while tired or inebriated! That means no 2 am spell jars if you are half asleep! ALSO never EVER leave a candle WARM or actively BURNING! Same goes for any items you are burning down like bay leaves. Burn them in a fire safe bowl that is much bigger than you think you need. Toss the debris around and soak in water to ensure they are safely doused.
*IF you are using wax to seal off spell jars I highly suggest getting a wax sealing kit! Wax sealing kits come with a little spoon that you drop bits of wax into and ‘melt’ them down over something like a tea candle. An example is this: Which you can find on Amazon for roughly $10 USD!
Tumblr media
The spoon is perfect for pouring and there’s less likelihood of the candle you would sit on top of the jar from falling off because...there is no candle! If you only have a candle to work with...please don’t burn the candle on top of the object you are sealing, put the candle in a safe holder and hold it over the object once warm to let the wax drip down. Have the object you are sealing sitting on top of a safe ceramic plate or bowl in case of drippage!
But what do I do if a fire starts?
Good question! That depends on the type of fire it is! Here’s a breakdown of the types and methods to put them out: Ordinary Fire: An ordinary fire is caused by candles, papers, cloth, plastics, that sort of thing!
The good news is these types of fires respond amazingly well to plain old water! It’s always advised that you keep a bucket or pitcher full of water within reach whenever using candles just in case!
Electric Fire: Electric fires are caused by a source of electricity, like wires getting crossed and arching.
NEVER use water on an electrical fire! If you do, you'll just electrocute yourself. If it’s safe to do so...unplug the object from the outlet. Turn off the electricity in your house’s electric breaker box. Smother the flames by pouring baking soda onto them.
Chemical Fire: Chemical fires have a chemical as a fuel source, like rubbing alcohol, nail polish & polish remover. Even your nails near a candle can produce a small chemical fire if you aren’t careful! (Dry those nails up good before using candles.) These fires can only be put out with a fire blanket OR pouring a LARGE quantity of baking soda or sand onto the fire.
Cooking Fires: Cooking fires are the most common form of household fire. It can be caused by grease, burning food, or burning cooking oil. Water will NOT work on any fire oil or grease based, it may seem like a first instinct to grab the pan and toss it into a sink with water...DON’T.
That will cause the oil to splatter and can injure you and make any flames spread further! It the fire is small enough and contained within a pot or skillet, have a lid or baking sheet handy and throw that onto the top of the fire, this will smother it out. A fire blanket can also be used for this. Do NOT swat at the flames, this is just a fanning motion and will give the fire more oxygen to grow with! Pour a large amount of salt or baking soda on top of the fire. MAKE SURE it is not flour, as flour will cause the fire to grow quick enough to even explode! Turn off any heat source.
And if the fire is in the oven or microwave? Leave that door CLOSED. It seems super scary but the fire will smother itself out when trapped in a small box. (Of which both cooking items are.)
Outdoor Safety:
Never burn outdoors if it is windy or extra dry! Do not burn general trash, only burn natural dry vegetation/herbs. Always check your local ordinances and make sure there are no burn bans in your area currently active!
If you are going to burn outside, clear away a circular space for the burning items. Far enough away from overgrowth, houses, powerlines, and other such things. The burning site should have plenty of dirt or gravel around it, usually around 10 feet, 304 centimeters circular if burning a campfire-size burning space. Make sure the dirt and gravel is well doused in water to prevent any spreading.
Always stay around the fire until it is completely out. Turn the debris from your burn a few times and douse it hard with water. NEVER leave dry ash on the ground, embers could be still warm enough to catch on the inside of the ash! Keep checking on that burn area for a few days or a few weeks to make sure nothing is left, especially during warmer or dryer months. Don’t toss matches or other lighting instruments just anywhere! Those can still be warm and still catch grass alight.
And there you have it! A crash course on being safe with fire while doing your thing and slinging your spells!

Look, I love Kanan Jarrus, I literally named this blog after him. I loved his relationship with Ezra and I AM glad that there was significant mention of Kanan from Ezra.
But.
I hate that Ezra's new lightsaber ended up just... a copy of Kanan's, both in its emitter and its color.
It's lazy. And it's so insulting to just... let Ezra make himself a new one and he just COPIES Kanan's rather than being able to make a saber that was uniquely his and spoke to the person he has become after everything he's been through, from losing Kanan to having to sacrifice himself to surviving Thrawn to spending so long on his own.
Ezra could have had a purple lightsaber, the first live action Jedi since Mace Windu to be given one, which allows him to stand out against Sabine and emphasizes that connection to his lineage through Kanan without being an exact copy of someone else's.
Or Ezra could've had white. This could've been an interesting and meaningful way of actually explaining the white sabers in mainstream Star Wars. Most casual viewers are going to have NO IDEA that the white sabers are "healed" crystals from red sabers. That lore is lost on people who aren't deep in this fandom. Ahsoka just wanders around with white sabers because... it's unique and it makes her look cool. No one's stopped in any of the shows she's been in so far to explain what they are or why she has them. (Yes, I know it came from the book but again, not EVERYONE has read the damn book and if they're going to use that particular piece of worldbuilding in the shows, I feel like they could go to the effort of explaining it on the shows, too.)
Ezra could've found a crystal somewhere on Peridea that had been corrupted by the dark forces of the Nightsisters that permeate the planet (which would also add to the lore of the planet just a little and actually connect it to the Nightsisters better given that it's apparently THEIR homeworld). Maybe he could feel just how broken it was and he could see that it was either red or a really sickly witchy green color and even though the darkness in it repulsed him, the crystal also called to him, so he took it and has been fiddling around with it ever since, for years. Over time, it started to lose its sickly red or green color and became a pure white, but he'd never been able to acquire the right parts to actually make a new saber, so he'd just been carrying around the crystal for a while.
Or Ezra could've used some cool Force powers to yoink away Shin's saber from her during the fight with the bandits and when either Sabine or Ahsoka suggests he keep it since he refuses to take his old one back from Sabine, he says that it just feels... wrong. Something about it feels dark and full of pain and anger. And Ahsoka can explain how she was able to heal the crystals in her own saber so that Ezra is able to do something similar.
Literally anything OTHER than just giving Ezra Kanan's saber recreated would've been more interesting and said something new about Ezra's character and how he's grown and changed.
But nope. They couldn't be bothered to come up with a new design, so he just gets Kanan's saber now. How inspired.

Another year, another absurd amount of books read (296, because if I wasn't reading or writing this year, my brain was on fire). I was asked again for my top books of the year, so here we go: 2023's top 10, in no particular order.
Tumblr media
This was the first book I read of the year--literally, vacated the hangout with my wife and sibling-in-laws to sit on their couch upstairs and eat through it. Do you love The Fall of the House of Usher, but wish for a nonbinary protagonist and a lot more mushrooms? This is the book for you! (T. Kingfisher is fucking rad, I made a concerted effort to only list ONE of her books on here, but honorable mention goes to The Twisted Ones for fucking me upppp.)
Tumblr media
A gay, post-apocolyptic Pinocchio retelling involving copious robots, found family elements, and a cool-ass treehouse. Klune always hits for me with his unrepentant queer family dynamics and sense of humor. Honorable mention to the first two in the Green Creek series (although that's got a lot more...adult elements in among the werewolves, you've been warned).
Tumblr media
I thiiiink I found this through The Homo Schedule podcast (PSA: if you missed out on Jasmin Savoy Brown and Liv Hewson doing a podcast together, now you know better), and it wrecked my shit. Tons of trigger warnings, as this is a memoir about abuse within a queer relationship, but it's so beautifully written. I personally suggest listening to the audiobook first, then standing anxiously behind someone at a book warehouse sale, hoping they'll set down the only paperback copy so you can swipe it.
Tumblr media
A fantastical-historical reimagining in which the KKK is filled with literal monsters, and Black women are resistance fighters armed to take them out. Visceral and intense, and truly an excellent horror story.
Tumblr media
Just. Such a soft time travel story about a daughter and her father and cherishing the time you get with loved ones. I was thoroughly unprepared for how lovely I found this one. It's very kind.
Tumblr media
Spooky house, take-no-shit redhead, protective sibling elements, bisexual recluse with a sword who really just needs a nap. I haven't found a Harrow book yet I haven't slapped five stars on. She's so good at character and atmosphere, and I'm always surprised at how fast her stories race by.
Tumblr media
The whole Daevabad trilogy (of which this is the first book) is just magical. A girl from the mortal world finds herself embroiled with the centuries-long prejudices and wars of djinn in a fantastical city. It's one of the rare stories of its kind that does have a love triangle, but doesn't feel like a love triangle; it's far less interested in the insufferable "who gets picked" than it is in the actual horrors these people are both perpetrating and coping with. It's an intoxicating ride.
Tumblr media
Fuck You, TERFS: the book. Given that fact, there's obviously quite a lot of transphobia to deal with, but it's very clear that those people are wrong, and it's a super-engaging (and super-oh-god-what-comes-next) witchy time populated with queer, protective, interesting characters I'm excited to see again in the follow-up.
Tumblr media
Have you ever wanted a haunted house story with visceral imagery and a rather lovely twist? Gailey has you covered. As much as I enjoyed The Echo Wife, I think I actually loved this one more, and it makes me so excited to see what else they've got up their sleeve.
Tumblr media
One of my final reads for the year, when I was just churning through hardcovers at the speed of sound. I love this book. I recognize it won't be for everyone, but it takes so much of what I love about IT (one of my all-time favorite books, despite its flaws) and twists it through the lens of an author who escaped the Mormon church. It's horrific, it's fantastically abstract in places, it explores childhood and memory, imagination and abuse, and almost every character is queer. It's a great "I simply cannot sleep until I've finished" read.

J.M with goth reader hc's
Warnings: Reader is female, suggestive content (its JJ, come on-), witchcraft, pogues macking on each other
Tropes: Sunshinexgrumpy, opposites attract, poguexpogue,
Bree rants: I really want to write this as a whole oneshot, so if you like these head-cannons, please give me some feedback on if you want more oneshots with goth reader. ALSO, read-a-thon is tomorrow, so go check it out, its pinned! I do also take requests, but if you do request something, please be patient, I have a busy life and I am a new writer. AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, I AM ADDING THIS TO ALL POSTS, AND IF I FORGOT IT @brokenwingsgalore WILL PUT IT IN THE COMMENTS. IF YOU DONT LIKE IT, DONT READ IT!!!! Thank you! I love you and make good choices kiddo.
(still dont know how to make aesthetic boarder things.)
JJ! Meeting goth reader at a beach party. Only noticing her because she stood out. The only one wearing a black dress that went to her ankles, dark hair with specs of purple in it, holding a red solo cup filled with some non-alcoholic drink. The rest wearing short dresses or bikini's.
JJ! Noticing how reader groans and rolls her eyes at the music playing.
JJ! Nudging John B, pointing at goth reader, telling him how he thinks you're cool.
JJ! Then telling Sarah to get her man to stop being a dick. Goth reader wouldn't have a clue about this.
JJ! Walking to goth reader, getting shy and nervous as she reapplies her black lipstick.
JJ! Basically recreating the scene in Scott Pilgrim Vs the world where he first meets Ramona. "So, do you like parties?" JJ says, ending his sentence with a shaky breath. Goth reader sighs and simply says a deadpanned no. JJ quickly says me too, despite loving them. Goth reader gives them an awkward smile, not knowing what to do with this golden retriever of a man beside her. JJ slowly and embarrassingly leaves.
JJ! Who comes back to the pogues telling them what happened, letting them make fun of him.
JJ! Who sees goth reader come back to him because her friend told her she needs to socialize. JJ who is ecstatic, while goth reader is awkwardly waving.
JJ! Who rapidly takes goth reader away from his friends before they can embarrass him
JJ! who talks to you and slowly you get out of your shell. Telling him how you hate parties, and hate the music, eventually telling him you liked rock music, as if it wasn't obvious.
JJ! Who tells goth reader he has to go to the bathroom. When in a reality he's forcing the DJ to play the music you like so he can dance with you.
JJ! Who comes back and acts surprised when Metallica, All American Rejects, System of down, My chemical romance, and so on plays.
JJ! Who gets you to dance and has the best night of his life with goth reader.
JJ! Who gets goth readers number at the end of the night, setting up a date with you.
JJ! Who takes goth reader to an old creepy bookstore and buys all the books she looks at with a small amount of money in his pocket. And at the end, they watch the sunset while having a picnic.
JJ! Who falls in love with goth reader after a week of dating because she's the opposite of him. He says, "Its boring when people are like me, the conversations are as bland as John B's cooking." When deep down its because she brings balance to his life.
JJ! Who makes goth reader sleepover at the chateau because he sleeps better when she's there.
JJ! Who lets goth reader do all the witchy stuff to him. Whatever makes his doll happy right?
JJ! Who lets goth reader sage his dick because "too many girls with negative energy have been on it."
JJ! Who lets goth reader put crystals and incense all over the chateau.
JJ! Who is so so so in love with goth reader and loves their differences.
JJ! Who brags to John B about goth reader, because she's into freaky things during bed. (She asked him to put healing wax on her back and he took it as sex.)
(STILL DONT KNOW HPW TO USE THOSE AESTHETIC BOARDERS)

Hey friends, workshopping a character for an upcoming campaign and am having a bit of trouble figuring out who exactly she is.
The initial idea was that she was a goblin with a criminal background who ended up finding herself in an "Aladdin" scenario, tasked with retrieving a powerful artifact (in this case a cursed cauldron) for an untrustworthy mage, but inadvertently becoming bonded to it.
Mechanically I'm all set up with a unique patron, thematic pact, and suite of spells from my dozens upon dozens of books. I'm running a warlock as a support class, which I'm delighted by the notion of, with the rest of my spell list being centred around acid, poison, & necrotic damage verging into more evil and sinister spells as time goes on. Her default cantrip is going to be a reskin of infestation called "BUGS!" Where she just throws a pocket full of bugs she's found in people's faces.
Problem is her personality and EXACT backstory haven't been gelling for me. I can't get into the headspace/find the voice/come up with good songs for a playlist.
Here's a few ideas I bounced around, feel free to suggest more or tell me if any strike a cord with you:
Gobbo is reluctant to engage in this spooky shit and just wants to get back to honest adventuring/thieving, meanwhile the dark power behind the cauldron has selected them as its new vessel and is slowly merging with them.
Skipping the thief bit, Gobbo was the apprentice to a would-be darklord and now carries on after they were slain by heroes.
Rather than stealing FOR the dubious mage, Gobbo has stolen FROM him after awakening the cauldron's true powers.
Any spare thoughts or opinions are more than appreciated, also any foresty/witchy/dark earth music because it more often than not helps me settle on a vibe.

hi!! could you share any of your experiences interacting with persephone? or how has it felt to communicate with her? or even just fun anecdotes. ive given her an offering and im so happy to worship her... but god theres so little info or people talking about her!!!
Hey! So thanks for the lovely question, its great to hear that your reaching out to Persephone and are looking into worshipping her. I've been working with Persephone for around 3 years, giving weekly (often daily) offering and have maintained an altar space for her throughout that time. I say this not to boast or seem all knowing on the topic but to give some small context on my practice with her. Like many others my practice and worship of Persephone varies with the seasons, I feel her most strongly in Spring and Summer. During this time when light her candle I feel her presence, almost in that way when a Parent/Mentor/Guardian looks in your direction and you feel their eyes on you. When I leave offering during these months, I often experience feedback sometimes emotional, rarely I'll hear an affirmation, 'Thank you' or 'how thoughtful' kinda thing. When I call for her assistance in ritual I feel her behind me, sometimes guiding my hand, or I'll smell/taste something she advises for the ritual, only for the feeling to pass when I lay my hands on the herb/oil/item suggested. When it comes to divination she a dedicated card in my Tarot the 10 of Pentacles (which in my deck is the Pomegranate 10 of Crops, I use the Bottanical Deck link) and in my experience she's always happy to make it appear when she has something to say during Divination. In Autumn and Winter my experiences with her is very different, she feels distant, less patient, she's in the Underworld and has stuff to do. I don't feel her when I light my candles or leave small offerings. Only when I Invoke her and ask for her help in ritual do I feel her presence, its powerful, not stern per se but business esc, she's there to help and her time is not to be wasted. During this time I only invoke her when I really need her, most often in death work, or partially important banishings/protections and I always have a sizable offering at this time. That's not to say Persephone is not comforting or compassionate towards me in the colder months, her attention is elsewhere, and her responsibilities are with the dead.
Tumblr media
That's all little heavy so here's a fun Anecdote. A few Years ago, myself and some witchy friends had a Party, there was plenty of drinking and debauchery (we were celebrating a friends bad break up). During a lull in the evening we pulled some cards and did some Tarot, nothing serious just good fun freaking out a few non-witchy friends, nevertheless Persephone had a word or two to share on the breakup, and while I don't remember much of it, it consisted of pointing out the Guys flaws and highlighting my friends strengths. After we put the cards away my friend asked how she should thank Persephone for her insight, I said leave her a wee offering, pour a shot out for her outside. My friend did so and said the following 'Thank for your wisdom Lady Pomegranate', before going back inside and passing out. I guess it's the thought that's counts.
Tumblr media
Just gonna finish this off with a small list of recommended Reading since Anon is just starting out, and hopefully it might be useful. I'll link to Goodreads, but you should be able to find copies of these online somewhere if you try to. o Persephone's Pathway by Jennifer Heather: link : a wonderful exploration of Persephone from a modern pagan perspective but not without flaw. (my review) o Greek Religion by Walter Burkert: link : Currently making my way through this, it's academic and a heavy read but so far enlightening. o Old Stones, New Temples by Drew Campbell: link : an older book about Hellenic reconstructionism, reading it atm, so far its heavy but good. o Underworld Gods in Ancient Greek Religion by Ellie Mackin Roberts: link : On my reading list, 'This volume presents a case for how and why people in archaic and classical Greece worshipped Underworld gods.' o Hellenic Polytheism: Household Worship by LABRYS: link : I haven't got around to this yet but it's comes highly recommended. Hope this helps, and thanks again for the ask.

Countdown to Agatha: Darkhold Diaries: Day 632
Something I’ve been quietly pondering since first obsessively scouring the Wandavision concept art book is some of the costume designs for Agatha. Particularly these:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Sourced from The Art of Wandavision, p. 148-9)
They’ve always stood out amongst the others - which had a similar scheme of exploring elegant, gothic, witchy elements. These four however are so different. Her costumes are eclectic and meshes garments of the past with contemporary ones, and it paints an interesting portrait of Agatha as a witch of many ages. Leather jackets, ripped t-shirts and jeans…were they articles from the present she found or enjoyed and added to her ensemble? Or something that was her trophy after a significant event, like how she claimed her mother’s broach after draining her magic and killing her? It’s really interesting how earthy her palette is, greens and browns and oranges. Organic shapes and the horns of the far right suggest a potential connection with nature.
And then, the teasers for Agatha’s show finally emerged. And Patti LuPone’s character was first shown:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Credit to @ScarletWitchUpd on Twitter for these images)
The silhouette and organic shapes, the eclectic ornamentation? It could be absolutely disconnected, entirely based on a loose hunch…but something about her character design feelings reminiscent of those outliers in the Agatha concepts. Perhaps she is the exploration of the eclectic witch Agatha had the potential to be in those early Wandavision concepts? Time will tell

Book Review: Wild Witchcraft by Rebecca Beyer
Tumblr media
TW: Alcohol mentions and tallow mentions. Poison Path things as well. This is: Wild Witchcraft by Rebecca Beyer Rating: 9/10 Pros: An amazing outlook into animism, herbalism, and foraging in a safe, sustainable and non-appropriative way! The instructions on how to garden were very to the point and explained some complicated ideals in an easy to digest way, I think one of my favorite quotes from the book that stuck with me while reading was,
“Just when I think magic has been cut down and paved over; a dandelion has pushed it’s way out of the cracks in the cement.”
I hope that quote helps you understand what sort of writing to expect out of this book! As someone that grew up learning planting from my Papaw who took classes on the subject after getting out of WWII through a governmental program and was a farmer before that, some of the information on growing was things I already knew. But for a beginner just looking into ‘wildcrafting’ or foraging or just plain growing your own herbs for witchy things?
Get this book.
The author, while an herbalist, breaks down each plant she mentions and includes plenty of warnings and suggestions for use both magical and holistically. She covers the poison path in a very easy to understand way while making sure you understand it’s not a beginner’s thing, and certainly not one to take without serious consideration first. The author takes careful note of Indigenous practices and makes sure to drive it home that their voices are to be heard over anyone else’s when it comes to taking care of American land. There are so many rituals and remedies included in this book that I have a feeling I’ll be referencing it quite a lot, and not just for the gardening and foraging tips!
Did I mention the entire 11 pages of a bibliography in the back?? No? Well there’s that too. My academic heart is thrilled.
Cons: Honestly? The only real con I have is that the author spends a chunk of time going over the Wheel of the Year which is a wiccan construct in a book that otherwise doesn’t have any wiccan imagery or practices up until this point. It feels…weirdly thrown in? But she also includes multiple folk traditions that were common amongst those particular time periods so…it is worked in but it still feels a little odd and jarring to me.
The author also mentioned the use of tallow as a commonly used oil for salves, which is correct but some people are uncomfortable with the idea and I understand that! Since the author has tincture recipes as well she does mention the use of alcohol in steeping purposes.
Overview: Animism, foraging, herbalism, and being safe to the environment. Good stuff all around!
