Littlest Pet Shop characters can destroy your city (read below)
Tumblr media
Littlest Pet Shop 2012, being a cartoon, ignores logic constantly. But what happens when these inconsistencies imply the pets and chatacters can destroy your house by breathing.
So in this scene, the Biskits are yelling at their butler to move a mirror up so that the light from the sun hits them. The light then reflects off of several mirrors to hit the Biskits who are sunbathing. The light is shown to not be an instant frame-one beam of light.
Tumblr media
So the butler was able to move his arm at this distance.
Tumblr media
Cropped out the guy's shoe because added height and also his feet were at an angle, and cropped off his hair because height doesn't count hair. Height of men in the US whoa really 60 or older is 173.4 centimeters. That will be this guy's height since he looks old. Height of image is 849 pixels. 173.4/849 = 0.204240282686 centimeters per pixel. This technique is called pixel scaling, and it's what Matpat on Game Theory used when he calculated stuff in shows and games.
Tumblr media
He moved his arm this much. Image height is 192 pixels. 192 x 0.204240282686 = 39.2141342757 centimeters.
Tumblr media
The light moved this distance when it traveled in a straight line. I chose this since the light actually changes in angle from coming from the sun and hitting the mirror. Image width is 870 pixels. 870 x 0.204240282686 = 177.689045937 centimeters. Speed of light is 299792458 m/s. Solve for time and the time frame is 5.92707E-9 (or 0.00000000592707) seconds.
Watching frame by frame, we see it takes exactly 2 frames for the light to reach that straight line distance as shown above. Given 2 frames is 2.5x less frames than 5 frames, that means the time it took for the butler to move his arm is 2.5x slower than 5.92707E-9, or 0.00000000592707 seconds. 5.92707E-9/2.5 = 2.370828e-9 (0.000000002370828) seconds.
We know the distance the butler's arm moved is 39.2141342757 centimeters, so use that and a time frame of 0.000000002370828 seconds and solve for speed. You get 369,995,000 miles per hour. WOAH that's really fast arm-moving, and he did this casually!!
But that's not all. We can guess that a simple casual movement Is slower than characters running and riding fast carts!
Like… the scene where Zoe and Penny in a wagon run over Vinnie and Minka. A small wagon weighs 20.94 lb. Zoe should weigh 13 pounds since she's a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Penny is a female adult panda, so she should weigh 150 pounds. We know they should be adults, given that we have seen flashbacks to when the pets were actually kids. We also have this implied when Sunil tries to show his parents that he has a job as a doctor, and the parents believing him.
Total weight: 183.94 lbs.
We have the relativistic speed there, so plugging those numbers into the kinetic energy formula, and we get 1.141291036168E+18 joules, or 272.77510424665393884 megatons of TNT. For reference, the strongest nuclear bomb ever, the Tsar Bomba, had a yield of 50 megatons. This means Vinnie and Minka survived an impact 5.44x stronger than the strongest nuke.
Tumblr media
Minka would casually survive this explosion without a sweat or care in the world.

MASTERLIST
The door shut with such ferocity that the whole car rattled, and you had to stop to make sure nothing would come off. Like a mirror. That happened once. Or a wiper. Yep, on the highway mid snow storm.
The phone in your pocket buzzed and you fished it out. Chris, the contact read. You sighed. How you managed to be best friends with an A-list celebrity and still be living in your 2007 Toyota Yaris was beyond you.
You looked at yourself in the reflection before you answered. Hair was kind of a mess, but when was it not. Your shirt was fairly new, but your jeans were ripped at the knees, and not in that L.A fashion way. In a way where you slipped off your mother’s front porch in a haste to get away and scratched out the knees of your jeans. And these were your good jeans too!
“Hey!” you answered, turning towards the coffee shop. “I’m walking from my car!”
“I took the liberty to ordered your favorite!” he answered.
Your heart fell. Yes, Chris was fucking rich. Filthy rich. But you didn’t need him to buy you coffee. Yes, you were living in your car, but also yes, you’d manage to scrape up two dollars for a medium two creams.
“Thank you,” you sighed into the phone. “Next time, it’s on me.”
“Whatever, Y/L/N.”
You hung up as you walked up the stars to the coffee shop. You spotted your friend, trying but failing to hide his identity with a baseball cap. Two men were beside his table, phones out. You waited patiently for them to finished taking pictures with him, and when you saw your friend getting up, you frowned at him.
“Too many,” he mumbled as he got to you and handed you your drink. “Let’s get out of here.” He guided you out the way you came with a gentle hand on your lower back.
Tumblr media
You went right back into the streets, Chris sighing out, “Where are you parked?”
You were going to answer some bullshit about being parked far because you didn’t want Chris to see all your belongings in your backseat, but he pointed beyond your head.
“Is that the Toyota Yaris 2007?” he gushed. He began walking to it, much to your discomfort, to your need to run because, fuck, he was going to see your dirty laundry and your memories and some old socks on your dash out to dry. “So many memories in that baby.”
Yeah, you’d had that car for a while now.
“Never get rid of it,” he chuckled, turning on his heels momentarily as you followed him reluctantly.
Yeah, that’s not about to happen soon.
“Did you ever get that speaker fixed, you know, the one that just fucking bellowed out music while the other was quiet?”
You smiled, remembering that time when Chris busted it while the two of you were driving to Maine. “Accident” was not how you’d describe it.
“Sure did,” you lied, because you loved to be reminded of that weekend spent in Maine with your friends, and how Chris had made your car the star of the sojourn. How he’d made you feel special in front of all his rich, glamour friends.
He got to your car and put the tips of his fingers on the hood. Then he leaned in, examined the backseat. Your heart fell and hurt and burned, shame coursing through you like poison.
“Y/N.” His voice was serious. Your face was taunt, eyes to the ground, letting your hair cover your face. “Are you... are you living in here?”
You shook your head, bad acting kicking in as you made a grimace. “No, of course not,” you answered. “I’m just moving my stuff.”
But he didn’t believe you. He’d known you for years, decades, and he knew the look you wore on your face when you lied. “Those are socks laid out to dry,” he pointed out. “That’s a pillow. A sleeping bag. And that’s a box full of dry food. Don’t fucking lie to me.”
You wanted to leave. Runaway in shame. Forget that your actor best friend had found out you were fucking living in your car.
“It’s temporary,” you mumbled.
“Fuck off,” he grumbled. “There’s enough shit in there that say otherwise.”
Your eyes filled with tears. “I - I didn’t have anywhere else.” Your lower lip trembled.
“Your mother?” he asked slowly. “She did this?”
“I lost my job,” you admitted, the sour taste of failure coating your tongue. “I couldn’t pay my rent so I asked her to spare a room for me until I get back on my feet. She gave me a month. And that wasn’t enough, so... here I am.”
He shook his head, sighed, hands clutching his coffee. You hung your head, trying not to seem pitiful, trying not to be the weak fucking woman your mother always made you out to be. The drama queen. The attention seeker.
But then Chris put his arms around your shoulders and your forehead was against his chest and he was warm and welcoming. God knew how much you needed warm and welcoming. Your mother never was any of that.
“I’ve got a room - “ he began.
“No, Chris,” you backed away, shaking your head, wiping your tears. “I’ve got interviews.”
“My best fucking friend is not living in her car a second more,” he said, grabbing your shoulders. Where had his coffee gone? Oh right, there it was, on the ground, after he threw it against the wall of the bank. Felon.
You looked up at him. Blue eyes. Half ginger beard. Freckles. Crooked smile. He was your best friend. He was warm and welcoming.
“I won’t be a nuisance,” you sniffled. “And I won’t be long.”
He draped an arm over your shoulder. “Take all the time you need.”
Yeah, living with Chris was a fucking far cry from your Yaris. He had, well, a huge house, big enough for the both of you to live almost separately. He insisted on shared dinners when the both of you were home. You had a shower big enough to fit fourteen people in. A bed wide enough to have, oh I don’t know, six threesomes in? Your walk-in closet was 98% empty because your clothes consisted mostly of folded jeans and baggy shirts. You had one pair of shoes.
You had a whole section of the house to yourself, and Chris even lent you a spare laptop for your job search. And that was going well! You’d nailed an interview at the bank Chris threw his coffee on and guess what? Bank manager position was open to you and you started next week.
Things were looking bright.
When you told Chris, he was so happy he almost fell off the banister.
And talking about Chris, living with him had its perks like a fourteen people wide shower, but also its well, down sides. This was his house and you were in no position to tell him what he couldn’t do. Like walking around shirtless after a shower. Or sitting so close to you that you could smell his cologne on every inch of yourself after. Or cooking dinner and serving it at candle light. Or sleeping with his door open so that when you woke up much earlier than him and went to pick up Dodger, you could see Chris sleeping. Or showering with the door unlocked. Yes, you’d tested that theory, so what?
You were far from uncomfortable, and maybe, maybe you were starting to feel some sexual tension. I mean, you were both grown adults, a man and a woman, living under the same roof. Single. With needs. It was normal that your hormones were telling you to get absolutely wrecked by this man.
You shook that idea from your head as you got out of bed. Chris had texted you that he was out for the day, so you grabbed a quick breakfast, changed into your bathing suit, and headed to the pool. You needed a nice relaxing day before you started your job tomorrow.
The sun was hot. The pool was a dazzling blue and warm as you glided in. You did a few laps, then settled onto your towel to soak in the sun.
The back door opened and your heart raced, thinking someone had broken in. But Chris stood there with sunglasses, a wide grin on his face, waving at you. “I cut up some watermelons!”
“Nice!”
“Come have some?”
You got up, wrapped the towel around yourself, and walked up the small path. You stood out the threshold, and Chris handed you a fresh slice. It was good. Juicy. A reddish drop stuck to the corner of your lips, but before you could get it, Chris was slowly swiping it with his thumb.
You looked up, surprised. Chris had never touched you that way. You’d seen him on training wheels and he’d seen you in diapers. You were friends. He’d dated Jessica fucking Biel and Minka Kelly and you’d dated Brad from ninth grade English and Tyler from the college football team.
“Is this... inappropriate?” he asked timidly. He took of his glasses, setting them onto the top of his head. His eyes reflected the sun and they were gorgeous.
“No.”
“This?” he asked, bending forward to kiss the corner of your mouth, where his thumb had been.
“No.”
“How about this?” he asked, voice deep, before placing a chaste kiss on your lips.
You were acutely aware of how much you weren’t wearing. That your skin and hair was wet. That he was very close to taking that towel off and seeing it all for himself.
“Y/N?” he asked when you didn’t answer.
Your eyes were closed. “This is fine.” And you reached up on your toes, cradling his face from outside the door, and deepened the kiss. You’d imagined a few times growing up what it would be like to kiss him. Especially when you were playing spin the bottle at a middle school party. Or when he started gaining fans and having all these different girls on his arm. Or when, at the end of high school, he asked you to prom when you were only a sophomore and some of his friends made fun of him for it, but he took you anyway.
He kissed deeply, sweetly, slowly. Savoring you. Molding his mouth to yours like he knew how to kiss you since forever. And maybe he did. Had he been imagining it too, just like you had? At those parties. At his prom. When it was just the two of you and you were drunk?
He grabbed onto your waist and hauled you in, closing the door behind you and knocking your back against it.
“Stop me if you want,” he breathed against your mouth. “If you don’t want this, pull my hair, scratch me, I don’t care, just tell me.”
“Shut up.”
You grabbed onto the back of his hair, savoring the soft locks you’d so longed to touch. You never realized how much you needed him. How much you’d craved him for so long.
He hauled you up and you wrapped your legs around his waist, yelping into the kiss as he wrenched you from the door and began walking. Walking? He dropped your lips to make sure he wasn’t bumping into things - and God, Dodger - and you examined him from your vantage point. It was the same Chris you knew; freckles and crooked smile and dark rim of lashes, but he was different. Rosy cheeks and parted lips and a look in his eyes, feral, that you’d never seen before.
You realize he was going to your end of the house. To your room.
Once there, he put you on your feet and closed the door, getting back to you with a swift kiss. Forehead against yours, he asked, “You’ve done this before?”
“Yeah.” How did you know what he was asking?
“It should have been me,” he mumbled before kissing you. He swiftly ripped the towel from your body, and pulled on the laces of your bikini top. It fell to the flop with a wet sound, and Chris backed away to see. “Wow. You’re... you’re beautiful.”
You rolled your eyes. He came back at you with a deep kiss, warm hands cupping your breasts smoothly. He wasn’t rough, or fast. He was soft and slow, as if savoring every inch.
He pushed you gentle backwards until the edge of your bed was at the backs of your knees. His breath was on your collarbone, kissing, nipping, your hands in his hair. “You smell so good,” he hummed.
You braced your hands at the bottom of his shirt and pulled, wrenching the garment off his shoulders and onto the floor. His chest, that you’d seen, but under this different light, different circumstance, the color of his skin and the way his veins snaked down his forearms made a new heat build between your legs.
Okay, this man was gorgeous.
And now, you were eager. You grasped onto his belt and pulled him to you, undoing him with lightning speed. His jeans hit the floor with a deafened thud, and you could see him straining against his black boxers.
He was searing to the touch, thick and hard behind the fabric. Your fingers inched into the band of his boxers and pulled him out, mouth almost falling to the ground at the sight of him. He was beautiful as much as he was powerful. You caught a bead of precum on your thumb and swiped it over the head, getting a low groan from Chris.
He pushed you backwards by the shoulders until you got the message and sat on the edge of the bed. He stepped out of his underwear, throwing the glasses on his head across the room.
“Up,” he ordered, gesturing his chin towards the head of the bed. You obeyed, watching his eyes fill with lust as they raked over your half naked body.
He climbed in over you, spreading your knees and hooking his indexes into the wet band of your bikini bottom. He saw the goosebumps rising on your flesh and kissed your thigh. “Are you cold?”
Far from that. “No.”
He smirked against your skin, pulling your bottom down your thighs and off your ankles. He kissed your belly. Your pubic bone. And a little gasp escaped you when his nose brushed your clit.
“Sensitive?” he teased. He didn’t wait for an answer, brushing his thumb against your bud, eliciting a quiet moan from you as you relaxed into the pillow. He could probably feel how wet you were, and not from the pool, as he dragged his thumb from your clit to your core, dipping his index enough to drag your arousal back to your clit. He made a sound with his mouth, like a low whistle, when your hips began slowly rocking against his hand. “I don’t want any other man in your bed,” he said.
“Uh-huh.” He was slowly increasing, slowly entering his middle finger into you with such ease it was almost embarrassing.
“I don’t want any other man touching you,” he whispered, dropping to kiss your clit, causing a sharp gasp to leave your lips. “Any other man kissing you.” He darted his tongue out, giving you a bold lick as he rubbed his finger on the spot inside of you that made you see stars. “Any other man drawing these sounds from you.”
“Yes, Chris,” you breathed, grabbing onto his hair when he ducked back down to continue suckling on your clit.
“Good,” he mumbled.
He continued drawing out those sounds from you he loved so much until the pressure in your belly built and you were whining, gripping his hair. He encouraged you with his tongue, sucking on your clit, fucking you with his finger, and when you came all over his hand, he kissed his way up your thigh, belly, chest, until he was kissing your mouth.
He was heavy over you. Your head spun from your orgasm, skin buzzing, eyes glittering behind closed lids. He parted your thigh with his palm, and you felt him aligning. Your grabbed onto his shoulders for support. You hadn’t done this in, well, a while, and you were sure that you’d need a moment. Especially with how big he was.
He kissed your nose, your cheeks, until you opened your eyes. He smiled down at you, kissing you softly. Forehead against yours, he inched in, hands in fists each side of your head. He let out a grunt simultaneous to your wince, and his left hand smoothed against your cheek, lips kissing yours tenderly.
“You feel so good, baby,” he breathed into your ear, inching in deeper, stretching you. The burn was there, but it was pleasurable because it was him. Because he was the one claiming you. He slid against your tight walls, seating himself completely to the hilt, before pulling back and sliding slowly back in. “Yeah?” he asked in a strangled moan.
You nodded, biting his shoulder, adjusting rather slowly. But it felt good. It was so strange. That mix of pain and pleasure, the coil in your belly tightening with each slow stroke from Chris.
With a bravery you didn’t know you hand, you pushed him sideways until you could swiftly change positions. His eyes widened in surprise, hands skimming your hips as you straddled him. You could take him better this way, deeper, easier. His pelvic bone pressed against your clit, and as you ground front to back, you saw his eyes flutter shut.
You used your knees to slide up and down, rocking like the motion of the ocean, hands on his chest. He was hitting all the right spots, rubbing against your clit, clutching your hips like he was holding on for dear life.
He let his hands wander. Smoothing up your stomach, between your breasts, grasping them softly. He sat up quickly, popping a nipple in his mouth, and the new position made the pressure on your clit increase, and the moan that left your lips was almost pornographic.
“Fuck, that’s good,” he breathed against your collarbone. “Just like that.”
He continued nipping and suckling your clit, holding you by one arm around the waist. You were close, clenching around him the more you rocked on top of him. Your nails bit into the skin of his shoulders. Teeth scratching his neck. His lips were everywhere; breasts, chests, neck, lips. You were so lost in him that you didn’t know where you began, where you ended. It was just Chris, and the edge coming closer and closer and finally, the pressure built until you were moaning his name, clenching him, cumming on him like you’d never done before.
He held you up with one arm, thrusting up into your tight walls sloppily, chasing his end. His mouth was open, gasping, grunting, all kinds of obscenities falling from his lips as he fucked himself right into you. You were still rocking slowly back, but you were weak from your high, pleasure making you tremble.
Chris gave one last harsh thrust before spilling himself into you, holding you down on him as if you were his anchor.
With a sigh, he let himself fall back onto the bed, bringing you with him. His chest was warm, sweaty, heart beating erratically. Your breathing was labored, but you managed to smile when he laced his fingers with yours, bringing them to his mouth to kiss them.
It was a few moments of quiet breathing before you realized. “Did you cut up one piece of watermelon to get me to sleep with you?”
He laughed. “I’ve been trying to catch your attention for years, Y/N,” he admitted, the sound of his laughter reverberating in his chest. “And now that I finally have it, I’m not letting you go.”
He kissed the top of your head and you hummed. Content. Warm. Welcomed. You’d finally found a home in someone.

Muses + Short Mun Bio
My name is Lana, and I’m the mun of this blog.  I’m a high school student who primarily writes horror and mystery stories, with emphasis on lying, manipulation, and physical and psychological torment, but I enjoy simpler, more slice-of-life stories, so long as there’s a good plot.  My pronouns are she / they.
Muses are right below the cut!!
Adrian Michaels - A dancer performing alongside her sister all across America.  She’s rather shy, but with her performances, she’s found herself becoming a bit more outgoing.  She normally wears darker colors.  Her resolve is stronger than it seems, and she’s normally the voice of reason in dire situations. 24 years old || Female || She / they || 5′ 7″ || African-American || Bisexual
Bella Michaels - A singer performing alongside her sister all across America.  She’s outgoing and loves people, and wants to gain friends and fans all over the country.  She wears brighter colors.  She’s often rash and impulsive, but keeps herself from lashing out at others.  Her entire life, she’s enjoyed sewing, and makes both her and her sister’s costumes. 24 years old || Female || She / her || 5′ 8″ || African-American || Heterosexual
Caden Contiman - A former college student who dropped out due to a variety of factors, mainly emotional stress.  He lives with his parents and isn’t allowed to leave the house, but he sneaks out at night and stays out until dawn before heading home to sleep all day.  He studied psychology in college, which has led to an almost intimate knowledge of the human mind and an ability to read almost any emotion and action.  He’s somewhat cruel, and tends to play mean-spirited pranks on everyone who catches his eye.  He doesn’t allow anyone to know anything personal about him, but always pries into others’ lives and minds. 19 years old || Male || He / him || 5′ 10″ || Welsh || Homosexual
Casey Allman - A strange writer who works himself near death.  He’s believed to be the only living member of his family, and spent quite a bit of time in the limelight during the collapse of the Allman family, which was spread out over three years.  He’s antisocial, and freezes up if confronted by another person.  The only thing that seems to bring him any joy anymore is his writing.  When describing things, he goes into way more detail than is necessary.  He has several bizarre quirks that tend to freak out the people around him. 22 years old || Male || He / they || 5′ 11″ || Korean-American || Homosexual
Charlie Patten - An assassin who travels the world, learning about every place he goes on every mission.  While on missions, he poses as a tourist, and when the job’s done, he doesn’t bother to stick around for much longer.  He’s rather confident, bordering on cocky, and can rarely be swayed to do something if money isn’t involved.  When he’s not on the job, he’s a pretty sweet and approachable guy, if always on-guard and somewhat suspicious of everyone. 24 years old || Male || He / him || 6′ 1″ || Canadian || Bisexual
Christopher Simon - A waiter living in a large city, having to work multiple jobs to support himself and his younger brother.  He’s quite cynical, which is different from his more optimistic, sweet little brother.  He only does things for money, even if it’s unethical or dangerous.  His constant struggle to survive has spawned a distaste for frivolous things or luxuries, seeing them as a waste of money.  Despite being so cynical (and, for the most part, tired), he completely changes when around his brother, washing away to show a happier, much less tense.  He despises his appearance and avoids mirrors and other reflective surfaces. 25 years old || Male || He / him || 5′ 9″ || British || Homosexual
“Cian” - A mysterious chemist living on the edge of a small town in Ireland, calling himself an alchemist.  He has a love of plants, wild animals, and nature in general, a love only heightened by the dense forest behind his home.  He’s very quiet and somewhat secretive, but passionate about his work and loves to talk about it.  He can be quite blunt or uncooperative at times, but he does enjoy company, especially when the discussion turns to chemicals. 25 years old || Male || He / him || 6′ 6″ || Irish || Homosexual
Ciara McCormack - A ruthless queen whose family has ruled a small part of southern Ireland for generations.  Having been raised with a cutthroat mentality and trained to eliminate all competition, Ciara has grown up to have that exact approach to everything in her life, making her a fearsome opponent to say the least.  She’s quick to cut out anything she doesn’t need, which includes banishing or even executing anyone who even shows any chance of being a danger to her reign. 27 years old || Female || She / her || 5′ 9″ || Irish || Heterosexual
Corianna Sutton - An assistant investigator to her older cousin Evian, despite not fully believing in ghosts.  She has a bit of an obsession with fire, which is shown in the burn scars and bandages covering the right side of her body.  She’s cynical but still friendly and approachable, although her demeanor can come off as bizarre.  She drinks often, and keeps a flask painted with the lesbian flag hooked on her belt. 28 years old || Female || She / her || 5′ 6″ || German || Homosexual
Daniel Hirsch - A teenage street urchin and graffiti artist who is almost never seen without his sister.  He’s annoying and troublemaking, but not without a kind heart.  He doesn’t find it easy to make friends, but considers that unimportant, knowing that he’ll always have his twin by his side.  He’s more verbally restrained than his sister, but just as irritating as she is. 14 years old || Male || He / him || 5′ 4″ || German || Bisexual
Evian Sutton - A paranormal investigator who explores all sorts of “haunted” places, recording them for her YouTube channel.  She doesn’t always carry around all of her equipment, but she makes sure to keep a recorder on her at all times.  She’s unapproachable and abrasive, and isn’t very friendly towards anyone other than her younger cousin Corianna.  Normally, when she’s approached by someone else, she’ll simply brush them off with a few crass words.  She’s normally very uninterested when it comes to most things, but the paranormal piques her interest and gets her truly passionate. 29 years old || Female || She / her || 5′ 9″ || German || Asexual
Grace Hirsch - A teenage street urchin and graffiti artist who is almost never seen without her brother.  She’s a loudmouth with little control over what she says, and she often instigates fights, even without meaning to.  She has a teddy bear she carries with her everywhere, with rips and patches all over it, that she considers the closest thing to her aside from her brother.  Every possession she owns is stored inside of a large backpack she carries slung over one shoulder. 14 years old || Female || She / her || 5′ 4″ || German || Heterosexual
Kai “Shōakuma” Misaki - A high school student often accompanied outside of school by his loyal falcon Chieko.  He’s social and charismatic, with an ability to capture almost anyone’s attention with his wild stories.  He’s absolutely fascinated by history, especially religion, as well as the supernatural.  Despite his eccentricities, he’s a good person, with a strong moral compass and a warm, kind heart. 17 years old || Male || He / him || 5′ 2″ || Japanese || Bisexual
Kunimasa Sakurai - A young man living with his family while attending the local college.  He’s stuck to a strict fitness regimen for years, and has a passion for physical health, believing it links back to everything in one’s life.  He holds family and friendship close to his heart, and would die to protect the people he loves. 20 years old || Male || He / they || 5′ 6″ || African-Japanese || Asexual
Landon Garrison - A bounty hunter residing on the deep web, hidden behind the pseudonym “Black Mask”.  For a price, he can find anyone’s personal information and give it to his client.  He doesn’t socialize much, preferring to hide indoors on his computer.  When he is accompanied by someone else, he’s notably tense, and refuses to do anything that can make him seem vulnerable. 24 years old || Male || He / him || 5′ 11″ || British || Bisexual

The August date still holds most of the big-ticket items. It’s billed by DC as “an epic world designed personally by Jim Lee featuring special programming, panels and exclusive reveals from a wide variety of films, TV series, games, comics and more.” Functionally, it’s the Hall H of FanDome.

Indigenous food sovereignty in the Andes: Locals discuss agro-ecology and reciprocity in the Quechua cosmovision
Excerpts:
In the Andean world, Allin Kawsay reflects the core conceptions of Andean cosmovision such as the concept of interconnectedness with the cosmos, human and non-human world leading to  a  stage  of  equilibrium  with  nature (Huanacuni,  2010;  Gudynas,  2014;  Lajo,  2005; Jaramillo,   2010).
Tumblr media
In this study, when research participants across the four Quechua   communities  when  prompted  with  the  question  about  the  role  of  Allin  Kawsay  in  food  practices, unanimous answers were provided by all. As one study participant stated:
“Allin Kawsay is an ancestral principle and this principle has been practiced since many centuries ago. It is an ideology of sustainable living because if it was not for Allin Kawsay then there would have been no systems of governance and law in our community. For example, we have the ayllu (community), and ayni (reciprocity) principles that enable us to work well together’’.
Another research participant stated:  “All our actions and labour are connected with our rituals and nurturing attitude towards Pachamama. In my house, we all know that all things on earth are living spirits and deserve respect.  I help my neighbour with minka and yananti when a widow needs help with her chacra. All those actions reflect my Andean cultural identity, my cosmovisions, and that leads me to Allin Kawsay”
The narrative above about Allin Kawsay is supported by Peruvian Indigenous scholar Javier Lajo, who is one of the very few Peruvian scholars who has written about Allin Kawsay and who supports the narratives above. Regarding Allin Kawsay, Lajo explains:
It is a philosophy for the sustainable use of the natural resources available  on  Pachamama,  and  managed  accordingly  to  Andean principles of reciprocity, duality, and solidarity for the overall state of equilibrium with Pachamama, human and all living beings. (Lajo, 2011; authors’ translation).
Further, empirical analysis brought to light a range of features among these, four that are   particularly   relevant   to   food   security   (see   Figure   4): Ayni; reciprocity Ayllu: collectiveness Yanantin and Masintin: equilibrium Chanincha:   solidarity
(...) In effect, this study reveals that Quechua communities adopt a series of food policies to  prevent  them  from  facing  food  hardship.  One  of  them  prioritizes  local  agricultural  production by producing food first for their own family and community consumption. Then any surplus is exchanged through a bartering system with other ayllus.

5 Modern Ryokan Homes in Singapore
In pre-Covid times, Singaporeans were one of the most avid travellers in the region. It therefore comes as no surprise that many of our homes are usually inspired by the places we have been and seen. These modern ryokan-inspired homes below that take inspiration from traditional Japanese inns are no different.
Made from traditional materials like bamboo and wood, ryokans are typically located in the rural countryside of Japan. Inside the ryokan, sliding paper screens—shoji—separate rooms decorated in tatami mats and futons, as well as a low wooden table and zabuton for sitting. Partaking in a traditional Japanese bath or a tea ceremony is also part of the ryokan experience.
But what is the ryokan appeal for our modern homes? Is it a call for the idyllic, for the simpler and slower pace of life that permeates the countryside? Or a reminiscence of the rich culture and gentle hospitality that we hope to replicate?
Whatever the reason, we cannot deny the ryokan’s quiet charm. If you’ve always wanted a home that looks like one, take inspiration from these modern ryokan homes that have married modern creature comforts with the elements of tradition impeccably.
1. A flexible modern ryokan home for a family of 5 by Pencil Office
The wooden screens, crafted to look like the ones seen in a ryokan, form the basis of the design of this apartment. Paired with laminated glass positioned in between the slats, the sliding screens separate the different areas of the home to allow for more flexibility in the use of the various spaces.
Closed off completely, the screens offer acoustic privacy without having to sacrifice the diffused daylight that gets filtered through. When opened, the apartment becomes a large and airy open-concept space.
This versatility was necessary for this family of five. The adults hosted guests over often, and would often entertain in the dining area or kitchen. They thus wanted to still be able to keep an eye on their young children while retaining a certain amount of privacy when hosting.
Parts of the home retain the original marble flooring, lending a subtle elegance to this minimal space. The rest of the home features a light-toned oak, with the lattice design of the screens casting interesting shadows and offering visual interest amidst the minimal material palette.
2. Attention to details in this 3,500-sqft residence by Upstairs and In-Expat
Enthusiasts of Japanese and Chinese cultures, the homeowners’ brief to the designer was simple enough: to create a ryokan style home for this family of three, along with their lived-in helper. What resulted is a home with meticulous attention to detail and a deep sense of care in regards to the materials and palettes used.
Because of the sprawling square feet, much of the original space was under-utilised. The home was thus reconfigured and left more open and fluid, with screens and columns to segregate the zones.
In the foyer for instance, a structural column was redesigned into a sculptural piece lined with oak veneers and curved edges to serve as a form of visual navigation between the main communal areas. Seigaiha-patterned screens are also decked out throughout.
The open kitchen, previously a tight and cramped space, now features a gorgeous 5-metre long island with plenty of room for food prep or light casual meals. Directly connected to the dining area, it is surrounded by sleek oak cabinets, with appliances flush neatly for a minimal aesthetic.
The living room sits on a sunken level for distinction, evoking the layered spaces seen commonly in a ryokan. One enters this space by stepping down on a Naguri textured plinth that can double up as a tatami platform when there are extra guests. The same material is seen again in the master bedroom, as a form of transition between the balcony and the sleeping sanctuary.
Lending a wonderful contrast, the bathroom evokes a deep dark marble. You see the same material being subtly used throughout the home, seemingly culminating in this most private space of this apartment.
3. An apartment with a $70K budget by Sync Interior
This 4-room flat is home to a couple that fell in love with Kyoto when they visited the Japanese city some years back. So much so that they decided to turn their Strathmore home into a space that resembles a minka, a traditional Japanese house.
Taking architectural references from the Edo period, they incorporated features like a zen garden situated at an alcove in their bedroom, a platform decked out in tatami mats in the living room and shoji-like screens to delineate the spaces. In the bedroom, mattresses are embedded into a low platform so they appear like futons without sacrificing modern comforts.
To further the aesthetic and the sense of traditional Japan, the home is decorated with the couple’s collection of Japanese antiques and souvenirs, including a Japanese tea set, folding fans, Japanese calligraphy, bonsai plants and noren, which are seen over the entrances into the bathroom and kitchen.
4. Infusing Scandinavian elements in this Canberra 4-room flat by 13th Design Studio
The homeowners of this Canberra home loved the look of a ryokan, but wanted a space that felt more modern to live in. As such, they opted to infuse Scandinavian elements into the home, which is the obvious route to take seeing as both styles cover a lot of similar ground.
Wood elements are featured predominantly. From the foyer, an eye-catching apothecary-style cabinet next to the bomb shelter stows away odds and ends. The living room, set on a slightly raised platform, comes with a timber fluted ceiling panel.
Walls here are similarly clad in wood. Coupled with the bay window seat decked out in cushions, the space evokes a cosy atmosphere that feels similar to being housed inside a ryokan.
The wood theme continues in the rest of the home. Along the walkway, a slice of glass panel showcases the homeowners’ collection of toy figurines, while a door within a door allows their kids to move in and out of the room easily.
Likewise, the kitchen, separated into a wet and dry space, is covered in woodgrain laminates, although a part of the full-height cabinets is decked out in grey laminates in order to visually flush the silver-hued double door refrigerator with the surrounding storage.
5. A minimalist BTO with Japanese sensibilities by Obbio Concept
With three young children and a busy lifestyle, the homeowners sought for a sanctuary that they could feel calm in. So when they got their keys to their new flat at Canberra, they opted for a minimalist style that would also reflect their love for Japanese design and culture.
The home relies heavily on the wood aesthetic, but balanced out with bright, white pockets of spaces in order to create a clean, clutter-free feel. In order to accommodate the needs of this large family, the home was designed with plenty of storage spaces. Most of which are concealed and hidden away in line with the theme.
A ryokan-style fluted wood screen was incorporated at the entrance of the home, setting the tone for how the rest of the space will look, whilst also lending privacy from neighbours that walk by. The shoe cabinet was also designed with a bench for wearing shoes that can be conveniently tucked away into the cabinet so that it doesn’t get in the way.
Nifty space-saving features continue in the rest of the home. The kitchen and study areas are enclosed behind glass doors to reduce the visual bulk. In the bathroom, the vanity cabinet was designed with an angle in order to facilitate movement in and around the bathroom. The bedroom too comes with an angled mirror panel at the sides of the wardrobe so that it takes up less space while helping to expand the room visually.

The Art of Japanese Life (House)
Much of domestic life is informed by aesthetics. The activities performed in the house are performed with precision and grace. Japan’s population is now 127 million people which means they can’t all live in the traditional house, most of them live in tiny flats. 100 years ago, 85% of Japan’s population lived in the countryside and a few of these houses still remain. These were called minka; vernacular houses once lived in by most Japanese people. Minka were designed to combat the extremes of the climate; the thatched roofs were steep enough to wash away the heavy rains and snows, the buildings were often lifted off the ground to create ventilation. The geography dictated the way it was built. This was also down to use of material. An abundance of wood was used as wood is plentiful in Japan and they are safer in the event of an earthquake.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Japanese craftspeople pioneered a consummate form of carpentry unequalled in the West. They are able to construct houses without screws, nails or glue. These techniques are still in use today at Nakamura Yoshiyaki’s Kyoto workshop. Nakamura is a well-respected sukiya-daiku (master carpenter). What is interesting is that Japanese tools are made to be pulled towards you whereas in the West our tools are made to be pushed. Matches are the same – in the West we push but in Japan they pull. The Japanese are thinking of the other person and not trying to hurt them. Respect is the basis of the sukiya-daiku’s philosophy and even applies to the materials. Wood is more than just a commodity. According to Shinto, it comes from a sacred, living organism and has to be treated with reverence. European architecture goes against nature whereas Japanese architecture and nature coexist claims Nakamura. 7000 years ago in the Heian period, you created a house like a tree, the roof was light like the branches, the tree trunks were the pillars and the roots were the foundation. They thought of themselves as living under a great tree. This attention to nature reflects the Japanese attitude towards architecture.  The apprentices work with such precision and focus in his workshop. They measure and re-measure to get it all right which is something I find ironic as other elements of the culture embrace imperfection.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Rinshunkaku house in Yokohama is a great example of a traditional Japanese house except for the additional second storey which is unheard of in Japanese architecture. It consists of low eaves, wood raised from the ground. The inspiration refers back to the minca of Japan’s rural past yet it has now been refined and elaborated. It was influenced by the simple aesthetic of Zen Buddhism which can be seen in how the rooms are open plan and free from clutter. The exterior walls are shoji screens which is a paper surface that infuses the home with soft light. The floors are tatami which dictate the size and proportion of every room. Ma is a Japanese concept which is fundamental to Japanese aesthetics and its way of life. It refers to the negative spaces between things. The most obvious example of it is silence. It appears in many Japanese art forms such as painting, calligraphy, drama and martial arts and the home. The floorplan is endlessly flexible and the partitions slide to open up the rooms which results in one continuous space which extends to the outdoors. This house is light, functional and versatile and is a lesson in domestic design. It went on to influence modern architecture and architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Charles and Ray Eames, Walter Gropius and Le Corbusier. This house was modernist architecture that happened to be thousands of years old. This can be seen through the open plan and clean lines which became the very principles of 21st century living in the West.

The tokonoma is the one place reserved for extravagance in the home and is often seen as the heart of the Japanese home. It contains some carefully selected objects; a scroll with calligraphy joined by ikebana.  Many Japanese people are obsessed with flower arranging. Ikebana is not just a hobby but also a highly personal form of self-expression. Its origins lie in religion – it was first created by a Buddhist monk, Ikenobo in the 15th century. Each arrangement in ikebana serves a different function and was a different meaning. Manabu Noda is an ikebana master who says in the programme that the other name for ikebana is Kado which means ‘path of flowers’ but he says the path has no end so even if he trains for the rest of his life he will never reach perfection which is a common philosophy among the Japanese. He discusses how Ikebana is not only about trying to create a beautiful arrangement but what is more important is the process of making it. Ma in ikebana is the space between the branches. To show flowers at their best it is about arranging the space around them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The concept of impermanence is an important part of Japanese culture. Through ikebana we learn that it’s the same with humans, to be alive means constant change. The flowers provide a talking point and through it the arranger and guest can connect. There are specific guidelines about looking at ikebana. Position yourself one tatami mat back from the tokonoma, make sure you’re face to face with the arrangement, breath and start by looking at the base where the plants first emerge from the water. This is an important part called the mizugiwa (the water’s edge) which is seen as the origin of life itself. Then begin to raise your head and follow the line of the plants upwards till the top, when you reach the top, breathe again and then appreciate the whole arrangement.  It is also often referred to as a shoka arrangement (living flower). The arrangement is often about the life story of the flower and nature which leads you to then reflect on your own life and the transience and the hardships of it. Ikebana is a domestic art form full of style and symbolism.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The other object in the tokonoma is the hanging scroll which contains shodo (calligraphy). Japanese artist Tomoko Kawao practises the calligraphy of ancient shodo masters and she talks about how to create each character there is a set order of strokes which was a rule she felt she could work with. She discusses how you can tell the emotion of people through the brushstrokes as the writing can reveal their personality. Shodo is said to express the human heart, what you feel in your heart flows through your arm and is expressed on paper. In shodo you have one chance to get it right so it is a very pure process.

Japan’s rapid urbanisation has made domestic life very difficult. In Tokyo, more than 6000 people inhabit every square metre which has meant that the homes have become much smaller and more expensive. The average Japanese home now lasts only for thirty years.  Now there is lots of experimentation in the architecture there such as elements such as sharp edges, repeated forms and concrete walls. These new modern houses are an attempt to make spaces that are beautiful, ordered and peaceful among the chaos that surrounds them.  Zenimalism is a trademark of Japan’s most famous architects including Tada o Ando, Toyo Ito and Kengo Kuma.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
MUJI is Japanese minimalism for the mass market. The name is an abbreviation of mujirushi which means no brand  which is ironic as image is what it’s all about. There are nods everywhere in the shop to ancient Japanese aesthetics and architecture. However the documentary discusses how the new Japan is not zen, it now consists of chaos, urban clutter and small messy homes.
Kyoichi Tsuzuki is a photographer and journalist. He has been documenting the homes of Tokyo’s youth. He talks about how today in Tokyo, the average size of an apartment is 60 square metres which is equivalent to 36 tatami. In his 1993 book ‘Tokyo: A Certain Style’ – he photographed portraits of one hundred people not by capturing their faces but their flats.  He is documenting the lives of city people who had been ignored. In these tiny apartments, there is no space for space or ma. These homes epitomise all that is wrong with Japanese life. People forgot this zen attitude or philosophy and lost this classic aesthetic and it was a negative view towards modern life and this artist wanted to change that. There is a famous saying in Zen which Tsuzuki mentions in the documentary “You only need a half tatami to meditate – only one tatami to sleep” so he goes on to say that more than that is just a luxury. I found this really interesting as we in the West see Japanese minimalism and zenimalism in the culture and the architecture as so simple, freeing and unluxurious and unobtrusive when in reality it is actually quite a luxurious thing and isn’t what it actually is real life. He shows a style that is and isn’t Japanese yet is also democratic. Minimalism is to hide your personality whereas small places are a representation of people’s everyday life which Tsuzuki thinks is more interesting.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Teronobu Fujimori is a Japanese architect but not in the conventional sense. He has created these crazy tea houses one of them in particular is the ‘flying mud boathouse’. His houses are eccentric but grounded in some of Japan’s oldest beliefs. He says that “Shinto is a religion that believes in the spirits within nature. That’s very important to me and my life. And as an architect I think it’s important to live in harmony with nature”.  ‘Dandelion House’ is one in a series of buildings he has done that sprout all manner of plant life. He did this with the aim of bringing nature back into Japanese homes as he believes humans need to be close to natural elements. The more high-rise buildings we build, the more we need the opposite, smaller buildings connected to nature he states. A home is a place of shelter and it’s about making a safe haven to call one’s own.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The host of the documentary talks at the end about how there is a precision and elegance in so much of what the Japanese do as it is a culture that cares profoundly about detail and getting the little things right. Even in the most ordinary places, beauty can be found.

    Mandy
Director: Pananos Cosmatos Writter: Pananos Cosmatos, Aaron Stewart-Ahn Cast: Nicolas Cage, Andrea Riseborough, Linus Roache, Bill Duke, Ricard Brake
“The peaceful existence of Red Miller (Nicolas Cage) in the Shadow Mountains of 1983 is burned to the ground when a deranged religious sect fixates on Mandy (Andrea Riseborough), the love of his life and, as is soon made very evident, a significant grounding force in his universe. Things deteriorate into a tranced-out nightmare of insect venom, hard drugs and broken-minded delirium as Red journeys into hell in order to avenge the woman he once lived for. Blood will flow in rivers. Worlds will collapse unto themselves.”
    Nightmare Cinema
Director: Alejandro Brugués, Joe Dante, Mick Garris, Ryuhei Kitamura, David Slade Writer: Sandra Becerril, Alejandro Brugués, Lawrence C. Connolly, Mick Garris, Richard Christian Matheson, David Slade Cast: Maurice Benard, Richard Chamberlain, Annabeth Gish, Elizabeth Reaser, Mickey Rourke
“At a forgotten, haunted bijou, a group of strangers have assembled to watch a series of macabre vignettes unspooled by the mysterious Projectionist (Mickey Rourke). Like the best anthology films (DEAD OF NIGHT, CREEPSHOW, TRICK ‘R TREAT), the stories’ tones range from truly deep, dark, psychological, demented horror to ones with a lighter, satirical spin. Witness a ghost story that will chill you to the bone; an exorcism story guaranteed to make your head spin; a B&W descent into clinical madness; a plastic surgery gone horrifyingly awry; and a cabin-in-the-woods slasher ditty with a unique twist you’ll never see coming.”
    Under the Silver Lake
Director: David Robert Mitchell Writer: David Robert Mitchell Cast: Andrew Garfield, Topher Grace, Riley Keough, Zosia Mamet
“Silver Lake, Los Angeles. The city of angels. The dream factory where it’s all too easy to lose contact grasp of Earth and see nothing but stars… Take for example Sam (Andrew Garfield), a prototypical slacker in his mid-thirties, without ambition… though he does have an unpredictable temperament, a penchant for voyeurism, and an unhealthy obsession with pop culture. When a mysterious neighbor (Riley Keough) appears in the sights of his binoculars, then disappears overnight without a trace, the first-class geek cannot help but investigate – possessed, somehow, by the eternal spirit of the countless detectives who stalked the hot asphalt of LA before him. But a Bogart he is not. Sam’s unorthodox methods very quickly leave him confounded; through the looking glass and into the heart of a strange city where dog killers, owl-women, aspiring actresses and gurus rub shoulders, among other high-society demiurges pulling the strings of an entire culture…”
    Terrified
Director: Demián Rugna Writer: Demián Rugna Cast: Ariel Chavarría, Maximiliano Ghione, Norberto Gonzalo, Elvira Onetto
“The lives of three neighbours in Argentina are turned upside down following a series of violent deaths in the area. For retiring inspector Funes, what was supposed to be an easy case suddenly takes a strange turn and he finds himself dealing with more than he can handle. Paranormal experts are brought in to assist in investigating what they believe to be haunted houses, where they will be tested by an evil the likes of which they have never encountered. As the night goes on and chaos is unleashed upon them, nothing, and no one, can be trusted.”
    Tales From The Hood 2
Directed: Darin Scott, Rusty Cundieff Writer: Darin Scott, Rusty Cundieff Cast: Keith David, Alexandria DeBerry, Bill Martin Williams, Bryan Batt, Lou Beatty Jr., Martin Bradford, Kendrick Cross
“Horror is back in the hood! The sequel to the groundbreaking original film TALES FROM THE HOOD reunites executive producer Spike Lee (Honorary Academy Award® winner) and writers/directors/producers Rusty Cundieff and Darin Scott for an all-new gripping, horrifying and oftentimes devilishly comical anthology. Keith David stars as a contemporary Mr. Simms to tell bloodcurdling stories about lust, greed, pride and politics through tales with demonic dolls, possessed psychics, vengeful vixens and historical ghosts. Mr. Simms’s haunting stories will make you laugh… while you scream.“
    The Witch In The Window
Director: Andy Mitton Writer: Andy Mitton Cast: Arija Bareikis, Alex Draper, Greg Naughton, Carol Stanzione, Charlie Tacker
“Divorced dad Simon (Alex Draper) brings his 12-year-old son, Finn (Charlie Tacker) out to Vermont to help him renovate an old house he recently purchased. Used to the speed of New York City, Finn has an impossible time slowing down to a smalltown pace, and he’s disappointed before even getting there. So is Simon (“I guess I was hoping I would catch you on the 12 side of 12, instead of the 13 side of 12”). Afflicted with a rare medical condition in which there’s a literal hole in his heart, Simon, ever resourceful, does what he can to make things good as he and his son attempt to repair what’s broken. Soon, a series of nonsensically terrifying happenings occur, nightmarish and incomprehensible. It becomes clear that they aren’t alone in the house. That there is more work to be done than either could be capable of grasping. That death is a partially living state. And that they are in a very special kind of danger.“
  The Dark
Director: Justin P. Lange Writer: Justin P. Lange Cast: Nadia Alexander, Karl Markovics, Toby Nichols
“Once upon a dark, dark time, there was a girl, lonely, undead and bloodthirsty. Behind her a dark, dark past – a curse. Hidden in the dark, dark woods, she tirelessly haunts her childhood home. Mina (Nadia Alexander) is a damaged soul, and tears to pieces anyone who dares enter her hunting ground. When she meets Alex (Toby Nichols), a disfigured and blind boy, brought to her by mysterious circumstances, her animalistic cannibal instincts seem to strangely fade away. As this uncanny friendship grows, little by little, both of these lost children learn how to reach out to the hints of light left within.”
    Cold Skin
Director: Xavier Gens Writer: Jesus Olmo, Eron Sheean Cast: Aura Garrido, David Oakes, Ray Stevenson
“In the early years of the 20th century, a young man (David Oakes) takes over the responsibility of surveying the weather of a secluded island in the Antarctic. Hoping for isolation and time for self-reflection, he instead finds a crazed and weathered person named Gruner, played by genre favourite Ray Stevenson (DEXTER, THOR, DIVERGENT). Gruner quickly reveals that there is more to this island than meets the eye and that below the icy depths, a terrible scourge lurks. The extent of Gruner’s madness slowly becomes more and more pronounced as his bloodlust for the creatures becomes apparent. Struggling for survival, the surveyor must choose between a madman and a legion of creatures he does not fully understand.”
    Heavy Trip
Director: Juuso Laatio, Jukka Vidgren Writer: Juuso Laatio, Jari Olavi Rantala, Aleksi Puranen, Jukka Vidgren Cast: Johannes Holopainen, Minka Kuustonen, Ville Tiihonen
“Life has its downsides in a small, northern Finnish town. The local bros give long-haired, leather-clad Turo a tough time, and his job at the mental hospital is literally shitty. His crush on Miia at the flower shop is thwarted by the tacky lounge singer Jouni, and his band jams in the back of a reindeer slaughterhouse. In the plus column for Turo, well… there’s the band, even if these black-metal true-believers have never gigged in all their 12 years together (Turo’s concealed but crippling stage fright hasn’t helped). A miraculous crack at a major metal festival in Norway jumpstarts the quartet’s dreams, and Impaled Rektum set out on a metallic mission that will make them confront not only doubts, detours and difficulties, but also Vikings in longships (plus an elf), graverobbing, Swedish rocket launchers and wolverine-wrestling (dangerous… and awkward!).“
    Dans La Brume
Director: Daniel Roby Writer: Guillaume Lemans, Jimmy Bemon, Mathieu Delozier Cast: Romain Duris, Olga Kurylenko, Fantine Harduin, Michel Robin, Anne Gaylor
“Mathieu (Romain Duris, DE BATTRE MON COEUR S’EST ARRÊTÉ) and Anna (Olga Kurylenko, QUANTUM OF SOLACE) are the parents of a girl (Fantine Harduin, HAPPY END) who suffers from a genetic disorder forcing her to live in a hermetic box that filters the air. This already vulnerable existence becomes even more precarious on the day Paris is hit by an earthquake, and then filled with a mysterious toxic gas that seems to come from below ground. Only those hiding on the higher floors and rooftops of buildings survive, but they are left stranded, without any resources. Wanting to check that their daughter remains safe in her “bubble”, Mathieu and Anna will have to face the fog.”
The Man Who Killed Hitler And Then Bigfoot
Director: Robert Krzykowski Writer: Robert Krzykowski Cast: Sam Elliott, Caitlin FitzGerald, Ron Livingston, Aidan Turner
‘The year is 1987. Calvin Barr (a too-great-for-words Sam Elliott) is not a violent man. But he is more than capable of violence if sufficiently provoked. What many don’t realize about the thoughtful, elderly bloke regularly seen at the neighbourhood tavern is that he’s a legendary WW2 veteran who many years ago assassinated Adolf Hitler, an incredible secret that he’s frustratingly unable to share. One day, just as he’s coming to terms with rounding out his life, Calvin gets a visit from the FBI and the RCMP. They know what he’s done, and what he can be capable of. They have a mission for him. After discovering that it harbours a disease capable of eradicating humanity… they need him to take out Bigfoot.”

Layers of Fear ↔Crowley x Reader↔
Summary: Based on the Psychedelic horror game ‘Layers of Fear’. Rowena narrates the story of her son Fergus and his wife Y/N to the Winchester Brothers when he yet hadn’t sold his soul and eventually became the king of hell. She highlights the day of her death and what followed after Fergus had lost the love of his life and left behind their little son, Gavin, driving him to insanity, depression and a dellusional alcoholic addiction.
Warnings: Angst, Major Character death, Mentions of Alcohol Addiction and Depression, Blood
Taking a sip of her hot beverage, Rowena sat at one of the century old armchairs in the now Winchester household, the Men of Letters Bunker. Humming, the powerful redheaded witch admired the atmosphere in the library, reminiscing the old times, almost 500 hundred years earlier. It was only when the youngest of the brothers occupied the sit accross from her and cleared his throat, taking her back to reality.
“What are you thinking about?” Sam questioned Rowena as she smirked, not realizing Dean Winchester had also joined the duo in the room with an ice cold beer in hand, sitting right next to his little brother he loved dearly.
“Probably about how she can live a hundred or more years in addition. What now? Drink goat’s blood Martinis?” Dean joked, chuckling to himself. Rowena ignored his remark and rolled her eyes.
“Nothing. Just thinking about the old days.” She replied to Sam’s question with her beautiful accent that never failed to impress when she met new faces. He nodded, thinking a bit before moving to a second question.
“H-How was Crowley before he became a demon? And with whom did he have Gavin with?” Rowena almost spit the cinnamon biscuit she was chewing. She tensed up and with wide eyes she stared into Sam’s hazel orbs before relaxing.
“And why would you like to know, Sammy dearest?”
“Moments before the angels fell we held Crowley captive in a barn and he said some…Sensitive things. About how he deserved to be loved and that there was only one person in the world that completely understood and loved him and that she was taken away by our god. He also mentioned that he hated everything.” Sam hesitated but admitted, at least.
“Typical.” Dean groaned and downed the golden liquid in the glass bottle that rested at the wooden table.
“Then, why don’t you ask him?”
“He won’t open up”
“Hmmm…I’ll tell you” She smiled and wiggled in her seat, trying to find a comfortable position. “Get comfy gentlemen, it’s gonna be a long talk.” She cleared her throat and begun analyzing her son’s story. “So, a while back…”
“Mother there is no way this looks good” The young woman spoke as she stared at her reflection in the mirror. Apparently, her aunt’s birthday present was oversized for her body, making it impossible for it to stay in place and look classy or comfortable for the girl to wear.
“Aunt Gertrude must have thought you needed the bigger size”
“Aunt Gertrude can go and..”
“Easy there. What did I tell you? We do not swear for the sake of this family. Honey what will the people think if they hear you, a person of the high class talking like that?” Her mother asked.
Scoffing, Y/N ignored her mother’s lecture and brought up the problem she had with her dress. “Do you maybe know any tailor that can fix it?”
“Of course. There is a new shop downtown. Minka and Vallerie told me that he did a good work on their wedding dresses.” She listened carefully. “William will get you there with his carriage.“
“No, no. I would rather walk”
And so she did. With a smile she faced the world. She found many friends on her way to the tailor. If you could call them friends of course. Maybe they were just acquaintances. Or maybe she was the victim of their lies and their snarky remarks.
Finally she reached her destination. Her face fell when she came across the ‘close’ sign on the glass door. Though she could still make the figure of a man through the window. So she knocked.
“Hello” She spoke in a small voice. Even though her rich and aristocratic inheritance, the almost 25 year old woman could not help but feel shy most of the time. She was surely a kind girl. “I’m sorry if I’m bothering sir.”
“No, it is alright. Come in. My name is Fergus Macleod and you must be?”
“Y/N. Y/N Y/L/N. Pleasure to meet you sir.” He was awestruck by her beauty and kindness. In his eyes, he had never seen such a beautiful person before him.
“From the Y/L/N family? What can I do for you M'Lady?”
“My aunt is a b- Sorry, I mean, she wanted to buy me a dress and got the wrong size so, is there anything you can do to help me? “ He nodded and gently smiled at the young woman .
“Sounds like a bitch” He winked and she chuckled. “I will make it perfect for the perfect girl”
Something about Fergus lit a spark inside her. He was something different than the oh so classy fake men she met. He was kind and funny to her. He made up for every friend she never had and soon, she found herself visiting his little shop more and more often.
“My son fell in love and it ruined him. It was worth it. She was the only good thing that has happened in his doomed life.” Said Rowena.
“No way! Crowley actually fell in love! What happened then, mommy and daddy wouldn’t let their little girl get married to the poor tailor? Aw poor Ferg-”
“Dean! Shut up!” Sam scowled his older brother. “Rowena, go on”
“Not quite. They were pretty fond of my son and maybe a year after they had met, they got married. I’ve never seen someone love so much as Crowley did Y/N and vice versa.” Dean and Sam were shocked to learn that centuries ago, Crowley, the man that almost killed and tortured thousand souls without any mercy was head over heels for someone. Dean was intrigued but Sam already knew it would end in a tragedy. They couldn’t imagine how much pain Y/N’s death costed to Crowley.
Y/N and Fergus had a big wedding and her parents gave the couple as a present a huge mansion over the hills they could use as a home. Fergus at first insisted that they didn’t need to spend that much money and that he would be okay, even with a small cabin as soon as he was with the love of his life but Mr and Mrs Y/L/N wouldn’t have any of that.
So they moved in and had a fresh start. Their love for each other only grew with them and it gave them a son they both adored so much. Little Gavin Macleod.
Nothing lasts forever.
“Daddy where is Mommy?” A three year old Gavin asked Fergus as he sat in his lap in the couch of the one of the many luxurious living rooms in the mansion.
“Mommy is out getting you treats for being such a good boy” The little boy cheered and Fergus’ heart swelled. He had everything he needed. A family. “It is late, little man. Shouldn’t you be asleep?”
“I wanna wait for mommy. She is gonna be home soon, right daddy?”
“Course she will. She’s been really stressed lately so why don’t you go ahead and sleep on your time? She’s gonna be so proud of her responsible little man” The little boy nodded and kissed his father’s cheek before hurrying to find his bedroom excitingly.
No more than an hour later, Y/N joined him in the living room carrying heavy bags. He rushed to her and helped her, kissing her cheek in the process.
“Gavin is a big boy, my love. He went to sleep early tonight with his own accord” He told her, chuckling to himself and winking to his wife. It was then when he started to notice that something had changed. The poor woman looked like she had seen a ghost. He ran to catch her as he realized she was about to fall. “Hey, hey, you’re okay, I’ve got you, okay? I’m gonna get you to our room.” He whispered to her ear before picking her up bridal style and carrying her up the never ending stairway.
“I don’t feel good, baby, not at all. It hurts so much.” She tried to say as her breathing unevened and cold sweat covered her sweet face.
“You’re gonna be okay, my darling, you are gonna be fine. Where does it hurt?” She closed her eyes and tried to focus on eliminating the pain, even though she had no success.
“E-everywhere, baby. It’s s-so cold and I’m in so much pain i-I just want it to stop please m-make it stop” A tear escaped his eye as he watched the woman he loved with all his heart hurt. He couldn’t do anything.
“I-I’m sorry Y/N, I can’t. I promise it’ll go away. I promise”
“I love you so much” she said. “You and Gavin. So so so much” She sobbed. He never got to say it back. The last thing he heard her say was his name. It was the most painful sound he ever heard. It came out as a choked sob. Nothing in the world compared to the pain he felt the very moment he felt her last breath against his lips.
“Fergus changed his name to Crowley. He despised that her last words came out so painful.“ Rowena sighed and the boys stared at her in shock. They could have never guessed the true, tragic story of the deadly King of Hell they met years ago.
“Wow…” There was a pause in the room. Sam and Dean were taken aback by the shocking story they were just learning about. They felt a sudden pity for Crowley. Of course, that wasn’t a reason to kill millions of people and corrupt thousand homes throughout the years that he held his title.“Did he sell his soul to bring her back?”
Rowena shook her head in order to show her negativity. “My son is crazy. He knew that it would just offer him 10 years of life and those weren’t enough to spend with her and maybe after his death, he dreaded the thought that Y/N would be able to find someone better than him and forget him. He needed her all by himself. He was hers and she was his.. He is hers and she is his.“
After his beautiful Y/N’s death Fergus fell victim to the world of alcoholism and depression. He never got out of their shared room for months. The only reason for him to exit his room or the house was in order to buy more liquor. He completely forgot about his son who was asking for his mama all the time. He did not take care of him after what happened. He had been a father to him, now he was nothing. So Gavin learned to take care of himself. He learned to make simple meals alone, wash his clothes by hand and clean his room. Y/N wouldn’t be proud though. That was not a way for a child to grow up. Sure thing, she would be happy that her son is a responsible little man. Nevertheless she would absolutely hate the distance between her beloved son and husband.
Sometimes the Macleod household would receive letters by many friends and relatives sending their sympathy. He didn’t need their sympathy. He needed her, and pieces of paper with meaningless words wouldn’t bring her back.
The house was even worse. It was a mess. Scattered empty bottles of whiskey and wine were everywhere littering the what it used to be a welcoming house, broken furniture were everywhere and some paintings had fallen from the wall to the floor.
Crowley had melancholic illusions cause by his alcohol addiction and they mostly involved Y/N. Sometimes he would see her being there next to him, humming an unknown anthem and other times he would see her dead body looking broken and fragile crying and spasming in the distance. It was a scary sight. It broke his heart.
“Does he still think about her? Why hasn’t he brought her back?” Rowena shrugged her shoulders. Only if she knew the answer… Deep in her cold heart she believed that he thought of Y/N every passing day.
“I do” A voice echoed through the walls of the bunker. “I do think about her every day of this damn life. I still have visions of her.” Crowley announced catching everyone off guard. “Mother, I see you haven’t revealed all of my personal life to Animal Kingdom. Wanna say more?” He said sarcastically.
“I’m sorry” Sam attempted to comfort the King but he only received a death glare.
“Sorry isn’t going to bring her back”
And then, he vanished.
A month later
“Moose. Not Moose. Meet my beautiful queen Y/N Y/L/N. I believe you’ve already heard of her” Crowley admitted proudly, wrapping an arm around the woman dressed in obviously expensive clothing as she smiled brightly. The Winchesters just shared a confused look.
Cause they saw noone but the King standing in front of them, all alone.

First Day in Japan
Tumblr media
GK Leaders in the “minka” in Fukushima
Today’s my first full day here in Japan, I learned about Fukushima and how many of its people want to re-build their community.   I was captivated by a traditional Japanese house, a minka, and I felt that really had a positive impact on the community.  It was such a unique house and I felt an instant connection to it, I felt right at home. The co-owners of the minka told us stories and neither of them mentioned giving up on their community despite the struggles they’ve endured since the tsunami and earthquake.  I learned that no matter how hard fear hits you, there is always space for healing and growing. Fukushima is such a beautiful place, but at the same time I saw the scars from the natural disasters on its buildings. Seeing all the abandoned houses made me wish that I had all the money in the world to speed up the process of clearing out contaminated zones. Looking at the damage and seeing that the the people of such a beautiful place was hit so hard by natural disasters all at once made me sad. I wanted to use to describe the feelings I have about Fukushima, “Visions that are blurry to one, could be clear to the other.”

Nampō Roku, Book 2 (29a):  Appendix (the Arrangement of the Ō-ita on the Utensil Mat,  its Kane-wari, and Other Associated Teachings).
Tumblr media
A clear understanding of the evolution of the utensil mat in the small room is important in order to understand how the furo should be arranged in this setting¹.
At least since the time of Ashikaga Yoshimasa, the utensil mat had been divided by five yang-kane.
Tumblr media
Furthermore, until the lifetime of Jōō, the furo was used all year round.  Jōō began to use the ro (it is said, in imitation of the central fire-well that was found in the common room of peasant houses) toward the end of his middle period, perhaps as a natural step that first saw him change the matting from the larger kyōma tatami² (which had been universally present in the room for chanoyu until then), to the smaller inakama tatami³ that were usually found in the more humble minka [民家] (both in the inner cities, as well as in the countryside) -- where the ro was often found cut in the middle of the room this way⁴.
The small room for chanoyu, however, did not appear until after Rikyū returned from his sojourn on the continent (in late 1553 or early 1554), and the ideas that he brought with him fueled the rapid evolution of this aspect of wabi-no-chanoyu⁵.
Originally it was intended that the ro should be used in the small room all year round.  When it was located within the utensil mat, rather than in the center of the room⁶, during the winter the ro was located so it was a little farther from the furosaki-mado [風爐先窓].  This was done so that air would be drawn into the room through this window and, after providing heat to the room, vent on the opposite side, through the bokuseki-mado [墨跡窓] near (or, later, in) the tokonoma⁷.
Tumblr media
In summer, in this setting, the ro was moved a little closer to the furosaki-mado, as shown below.  This small difference reversed the direction of the air flowing through the room, allowing the heated air to exit directly through the furosaki-mado, while pulling fresh air into the room through the bokuseki-mado.
Tumblr media
In this case, the ro was moved 2-sun backward; and, so that the host did not have to replace the tatami mats⁸, the ko-ita [小板]⁹ was cut into two pieces, and the larger of them was placed in front of the ro.
This moving 2-sun backward is the salient piece of information, in so far as the orientation of the shiki-ita is concerned, since the ko-ita [小板] (the shiki-ita that is 9-sun 5-bu square)¹⁰ was placed so that it is 2-sun behind what was the front edge of the mukō-ro.
Tumblr media
This moved the kama and the fire backward toward the furosaki-mado.  (In the sketch, the area previously occupied by the mukō-ro has been shaded.  However, since the heri was originally found on the left side of the mukō-ro, the ko-ita actually extends to the left edge of that heri.)
As has been mentioned several times before, the original furo that was used in the small room was the large iron kimen-buro -- or a ceramic furo of a similar size (generally they measure between 1-shaku 1-sun and 1-shaku 2-sun in diameter).  And, since the time of Jōō, this kind of furo was always placed on a shiki-ita that was 9-sun 5-bu square¹¹.
As has been mentioned previously, when the daisu was abbreviated to the naga-ita, and then to the shiki-ita, the furo was moved toward the middle of the mat.  Thus, in addition to orienting it so that it was 2-sun back from the front edge of the mukō-ro, the ko-ita was also placed 9-me (4-sun 5-bu) from the heri -- thus bringing the inner side of the furo near to the central kane of the mat, as shown below¹².
Tumblr media
Because it was the location of the furo, vis-à-vis the furosaki-mado, that was important, the ō-ita [大板] had to be oriented accordingly (rather than simply placed down on the utensil mat using the same rules set down for the ko-ita).
Tumblr media
Thus, the host had to be sure to leave sufficient space for the mizusashi, while also not placing the furo so close to the furosaki-mado that breezes would cause the ash to blow out into the room.  Therefore, 1-sun back from the front edge of the mukō-ro seems most common, and (as Rikyū wrote) 5-me (2-sun 5-bu) from the heri.
Because the ō-ita was derived from the small daisu, it partakes of the “seven-kane” system that Jōō established for use in the inakama setting¹³.
Tumblr media
And, when the small furo is placed on the ō-ita, it rests upon two kane, as shown below.
Tumblr media
As for the conventions associated with the use of the ō-ita, in addition to being used to display some of the utensils needed during the sumi-temae (such as the bronze hibashi¹⁴, kan, and habōki), the hishaku and futaoki also came to be placed on the ita once it came to remain on the utensil mat into the goza of the gathering.
Tumblr media
And, during the service of tea, the chakin and chashaku were also placed on the ō-ita¹⁵ -- the chakin immediately in front of the furo, and the chashaku between the chakin and the central kane.  Also, during the temae, when the lid is removed from the chaire, it should be placed on the ō-ita, near the place where the chashaku had been resting (rather than leaned against the handle of the hishaku, as was usually done in Rikyū’s temae).
_________________________
¹Note that while a ko-ita furo is sometimes placed inside a daime-gamae [臺目構え] today, this was originally considered wrong*.  The daime room featuring a kamae was conceived by Jōō (and Rikyū -- the two men built the first examples of the two-mat daime simultaneously) to be used with the ro throughout the year.  And, in keeping with the idea of wabi, there were supposed to be no differences in the arrangement of the utensils between winter and summer† -- the only modifications were in the temae, and these only to accommodate the tea itself‡. __________ *As with many other deviations from the orthodox practices, placing a furo inside the kamae began in the Edo period (when the government’s encouragement of using more utensils demanded a clear difference between the summer and winter seasons).
†That is to say, the same room, the same set and arrangement of the tatami, and the exact same set of utensils, could all be used throughout the year without the need to change anything at all:  the host could indeed serve tea properly even if he owned just one kama, one chaire, one chawan, and so forth.  This was the purpose of the small room:  to distance wabi-no-chanoyu (which is only concerned about the tea) from the earlier gokushin-no-chanoyu (where utensils were at least as important as the tea being served in them).
Since Jōō was, by profession, an antique dealer, this phase (which occurred during the last year or so of his life) marked a pointed repudiation of what had essentially been his life's work -- namely, the encouragement of his customers (and, through them, the entire tea world) to possess and use as many fine utensils as possible.
The simplification of the kaiseki to one offering the guests just one bowl of soup and three dishes of vegetables (isshū san-sai [一汁三菜] being the description of this style of meal service) -- which was based on the way temple meals were served on the continent -- also occurred at this time.
It is important to add that the reader’s impression of Rikyū’s chanoyu will be distorted by studying the present kaiki, and the Rikyū Hyakkai Ki [利休百會記], both of which are actually anomalous:  these kaiki document Rikyū’s activity while in the service of Hideyoshi, and surely reflect Hideyoshi’s desire that these chakai be made as impressive as possible by incorporating pieces from Hideyoshi’s own collection.  (Perhaps inspired by Jōō, Hideyoshi was attempting to collect all of the meibutsu utensils together in one place.)  In fact, looking at the records of Rikyū’s chakai prior to the time when he entered Hideyoshi’s service reveals that, in fact, he owned a very small set of utensils, which he frequently arranged in much the same manner on every occasion.  Unfortunately, people took these kaiki as guides to what Rikyū intended to be done, and this was largely responsible for the development of the train of thought that lead to the modern notion that the tori-awase should be completely changed for every gathering.
‡This is a point of misunderstanding among many modern-day chajin, and the lack of understanding accounts for most of the problems that beginners (and even experienced practitioners) have changing between the furo and the ro.
The tea intended for use as matcha was traditionally picked during the 10 days before, and the 10 days following, the 88th day of the Lunar Year (which means sometime in late April or early May:  this year, 2019, for example, the 88th day will be May 3rd).  The tea leaves were steamed and dried, graded, and then packed into ceramic jars (that were not glazed on the inside, and only partially glazed on the outside -- this allowed the moisture content of the leaves to stabilize; and it is the instability in modern matcha, which is ground into powder immediately after it has been dried, that causes problems with static electricity and the corresponding formation of lumps in the koicha), and kept in a cool place until the beginning of winter.
At the beginning of winter, the jars were opened and the “new tea” was used for the first time.  Because the jars had been sealed up to this time, the tea was strongest when the jar is first opened.  And, each time it is opened thereafter, its strength necessarily would decline slightly.  This would not really be a serious problem, however, until the year began to warm up.  But once the ambient temperature remained above freezing during the night as well as the daytime, the volatile constituents would begin to evaporate more freely, and more and more of these would be lost each time the tea remaining in the jar was exposed to the air.
This is the real reason behind the difference in the ro and furo temae:  during the ro season, the tea is strong, and so fully boiling water may be used when preparing the koicha.  Once the year begins to warm (so that the host closes the ro and returns to the use of the furo), however, care must be taken, since using overly hot water will cause the dwindling volatile constituents to evaporate immediately after the hot water has been added to the chawan, resulting in poor-tasting tea by the time the chawan reaches the shōkyaku’s hands.  Thus, from the time it is warm enough to use the furo, the host also should begin to add some cold water to the kama just before dipping out the hot water for the koicha, in order to protect the taste as much as possible.
It was not the use of the furo that was the reason for this addition of cold water, per se, but because of the condition of the tea itself.  And, in the early days (before Jōō began to use the ro), the same difference in procedure was also observed, even though the furo was being used all year round:  when the tea was fresh and strong, then boiling water could be used without worry; but once the tea began to decline in strength, the host must add cold water, or he will risk serving his guests a tasteless bowl of koicha.
²The kyōma tatami [京間疊] measures 6-shaku 3-sun by 3-shaku 1-sun 5-bu.
Only kyōma tatami (and the modified versions of it -- the daime, and the half-mat) can be used in the small rooms.
³The inakama tatami [田舎間疊] measures 5-shaku 9-sun by 2-shaku 9-sun 5-bu.
However, because the other proportions of the room are also reduced accordingly, sitting in an inakama 4.5-mat room gives one a similar feeling to sitting in a kyōma 2-mat room.
⁴A traditional minka [民家] generally featured a central "common room" with the entry foyer (genkan [玄關]) on one side, and residential (or business-related) rooms on the other three sides.  More affluent residences (in the cities) extended farther backward, with an enclosed garden surrounded by residential rooms on the side of the common room opposite the genkan.
The ro, in this setting, was used both for cooking and for heating (the latter depending on the size of the fire being kindled in the ro):  the family congregated around the ro (which was often as large as half of a mat, and around which the other four mats for sitting were arranged), and the meal was served directly from it.  In this sense, to say the ro came from the farmhouse “kitchen” will give the Western reader a very different idea from the actual situation.
⁵Rooms -- or, more properly, cells -- of 2-mats had been in use for chanoyu at least since Shukō’s period.  But these tiny rooms were the residential chambers of tonsured monks, who were required to live in such minimal surroundings (probably because they were not supposed to have any earthly possessions), rather than “tearooms” in the usual sense of the word.
Though the same can also be said for the earliest shoin, such as the Dōjin-sai [同仁齋] of Ashikaga Yoshimasa (this shoin was his private residential chamber within the Jishō-ji [慈照寺] temple complex -- the “Ginkaku-ji” [銀閣寺], as it is popularly known today, was constructed as the temple to which Yoshimasa retired):  a 4.5-mat room had, since the early period, been considered the appropriate space for a person to occupy.  The true “tearoom” in the modern sense (being a room reserved exclusively for the purpose of hosting a chanoyu gathering) does not seem to have appeared before Jōō -- who set aside a 4.5-mat room on the ground floor of his residence that would only be used for chanoyu.
⁶This is the differentiating feature between the daime rooms (where the ro is more or less in the center of the room), and the rooms where the ro is located within the confines of the utensil mat itself.
⁷The furosaki-mado [風爐先窓] and bokuseki-mado [墨跡窓] are both shitaji-mado [下地窓] -- that is, “windows” made by leaving a rectangular section of wall unplastered.  The primary purpose of the shitaji-mado was for ventilation, not illumination (though, of course, their lighting properties were appreciated, and utilized, during the gathering).  While all tearooms should have two shitaji-mado (located on opposite sides of the room*), they are critically important in the smaller rooms, since without them the gasses given off by the burning charcoal could reach toxic levels. __________ *The furosaki-mado should be relatively low to the mats, while the bokuseki-mado should be higher up.  This creates a gradient that helps to facilitate good ventilation.
⁸In the early days, the mats were generally changed for every gathering.  But as more and more chajin of limited means began to appear (a consequence of their being refugees escaping from the political strife on the Korean peninsula during the second half of the fifteenth century), many of whom were pursuing chanoyu as a form of motion meditation, and so perhaps the ritual daily, such formalities were neither practical nor, usually, affordable.
The presence of the ko-ita in front of the ro also helps the host to arrange the other utensils (since they take their positions from the imaginary line that runs across the width of the mat in front of the mukō-ro), and assume his proper seat in front of the temae-za.
⁹The ko-ita [小板] is the board that is placed between the far side of the ro and the far wall.  According to Book Six of the Nampō Roku, it is 1-shaku 4-sun long*, 2-sun 2-bu from front to back, and the same thickness as a tatami mat.
While originally made as a single piece, once the decision was made to move the ro backward during the warmer months, the ko-ita was (in theory) cut in two.  Actually, most hosts had a single ko-ita (1-shaku 4-sun by 2-sun 5-bu) that they used in winter, and a separate pair of ko-ita (one measuring 1-shaku 4-sun by 2-sun, and the other 1-shaku 4-sun by 5-bu) that were used in summer†.
Among Japanese tea people (including scholars), there is often confusion over the smaller of these ko-ita, because the floor of the room is usually surrounded by a sort of baseboard that is also 5-bu wide (these thin boards, which are attached neither to the wall or the floor, but are simply wedged in between the edges of the mats and the lower end of the wall, allow the matting to be changed more easily -- since, when the baseboards are removed, the mats are no longer flush with the bottom of the walls), and they conflate the smaller ko-ita with this baseboard (since both are 5-bu thick)‡.  When the room has this kind of baseboard, the ko-ita fits between the baseboard and the ro-buchi, thus (in summer) the far side of the ro is actually 1-sun away from the far wall. __________ *The ko-ita is a feature of the small room; and, as mentioned above, the small rooms are always covered with kyōma-tatami.  In a room that is floored with kyōma-tatami, the ro is always 1-shaku 4-sun square.  (And any room in which this is found to be not the case -- such as the Tai-an [待庵] -- is an Edo period, or later, forgery, regardless of who it is that argues it is authentic.)
†Just as was the case with the large-sized habōki, these smaller boards fell out of use once the furo came to be used in the small rooms (and so were frequently “preserved” in storage); and, rediscovered in the Edo period, people (ignorant of the original teachings) began to assert that these boards were the correct size, while memory of the ko-ita 2-sun 5-bu wide was forgotten.
‡The result is that, since at least the Edo period, certain people (and, in consequence, some schools, when “the person” happened to be the iemoto) subtract 5-bu from the ko-ita that is used in winter.  Doing so moves the ro that much closer to the wall, and causes problems with the kane-wari.
¹⁰There is no way to resolve the problem of nomenclature, since “shiki-ita” might easily give the reader the wrong impression*.  Originally, only the ko-ita (measuring, as stated above, 9-sun 5-bu square) was used in the small room because only the large furo that had been made for use on the o-chanoyu-dana was sanctioned for use in that setting.
The fundamental idea of wabi was that objects from the earlier days that were being “wasted” or “neglected” were the things that were supposed to be used in the small room setting†.  That, by the time of this chakai, things had evolved beyond this point is irrelevant when our purpose is to understand where the conventions that guided Rikyū's decisions came from. __________ *All of the boards that are used as bases for the furo can be described as “shiki-ita” [敷板] (since that is what the word means).  However, with respect to the small room, only the shiki-ita denominated ko-ita [小板] by Jōō, was sanctioned for use in this room, historically speaking.
†Before the arrival of chanoyu in Japan -- which Book Six of the Nampō Roku places on the 18th day of the Sixth Month of Ōei 10 [應永十年] (1403) -- tea was usually prepared at the o-chanoyu-dana (in the 2-mat preparation room that was almost always attached to the shoin) and then brought out into the shoin to be drunk.
Once preparing the tea (using the daisu) in the shoin itself (by either the host, or one of his high-ranking attendants), before the eyes of the guests, became the fashion, the o-chanoyu-dana and its associated utensils fell into disuse.  Thus it was the large iron furo and large ceramic mizusashi that came to be the preferred utensils in the small room.
The same was true regarding the chawan and chaire:  the large bowls originally employed as kae-chawan [替茶碗] (these bowls were not used to serve tea, but for cleaning the chasen after tea had been served in the small bowl), and the large taikai (that had been used as the tea container on the o-chanoyu-dana) and large katatsuki chaire (which had originally been used for usucha -- in other words, for collecting the left-over tea -- in the early days of chanoyu), were promoted to the important stations formerly occupied exclusively by the temmoku and ko-tsubo, in the wabi setting.
Replacing these things (which, for the most part, were imports from the continent) with locally made pieces only began during the middle of the sixteenth century.
¹¹Originally, when used in the tearoom, the large (and usually iron) kimen-buro was placed on a naga-ita.  Because Jōō used the naga-ita that had been created by (or for) Ashikaga Yoshimasa, he made a shiki-ita for the furo that was used during the shoza (so that the precious naga-ita would not be damaged during the sumi-temae*).  This paralleled the use of shiki-ita as bases for the medium† and small‡ kimen-buro (again, originally used only during the shoza), to protect the large and small daisu from damage. __________ *As with the daisu, Yoshimasa's naga-ita, together with the abbreviated set of kaigu, was displayed in the tokonoma during the shoza.  Only the furo (on a shiki-ita) was placed on the utensil mat.  During the naka-dachi, the naga-ita was moved from the toko to the utensil mat, and the furo (together with the other things) was arranged on it.  This all paralleled Jōō’s way of handling the daisu.
According to Rikyū, the shiki-ita for the large kimen-buro was created (by Jōō) by taking the large furo outside, and tracing the circular shadow cast by the furo at noon on a piece of paper.
Tumblr media
A square was drawn inside this circle, and this square (which measured 9-sun 5-bu on each side) determined the size of the large furo’s shiki-ita -- which Jōō called the ko-ita [小板] (since it was noticeably smaller than the shiki-ita that he has made for the medium and small kimen-buro).
While the name is the same as the ko-ita that is placed between the ro and the far wall, the two objects are not related, so the reader should be careful not to confuse one with the other.
†The shiki-ita for the medium kimen-buro (which was made of bronze) was called the shi-hō-ita [四方板].  It measured 1-shaku 2-sun from side to side, and 1-shaku from front to back.
‡The shiki-ita that Jōō made for the small bronze kimen-buro was the ō-ita [大板]; and it measured 1-shaku 3-sun square.
¹²The left side of a furo 1-shaku 1-sun in diameter will be slightly to the right of the central kane; that of a furo 1-shaku 2-sun in diameter will cross the central kane slightly.
¹³The small shin-daisu was the first tana that Jōō used in his inakama 4.5-mat room.  Probably because the space between the heri is smaller than that available on the kyōma tatami -- so small that simply scaling down the original kane renders their arrangement meaningless (even the smaller utensils crossed more kane than they were supposed to, rendering the teachings of kane-wari meaningless in this setting), Jōō added two more kane and basically ignored the space between them.  So pervasive was this argument that the sizes of virtually all of the present day utensils were fixed upon relative to this system of seven kane.
When Jōō began to use the ro, this immediately increased the possibilities for what could be used as a tana (since it no longer had to be large enough to house the furo, as well as the mizusashi and other things), and he began to adopt a modified version of the Shino family’s Shino-dana (which he referred to as the fukuro-dana) in this setting; but following from the fact that the entire width of the daisu was what was divided (rather than the mat in front), Jōō held that the kane for the tana should be based only on the width of the tana (not the mat), so long as the tana was wider than half a mat.  If it were less than half a mat wide, then the tana partook of the kane as if it were one of the shelves of the fukuro-dana.
¹⁴These were the same bronze hibashi that were displayed in the shaku-tate.  Ordinary iron hibashi could not be used in either of these ways.
¹⁵The chashaku was placed on the ō-ita rather than rested on top of (or leaned against) the chaire.  If a tray was present for the chaire, however, then many teachers argue that the chashaku should rest on the tray (just as is done in the case of the daisu).
As for the chakin, it is placed on the ō-ita when it is not resting on the lid of the kama.  The same rules apply here as with the daisu-temae -- or, indeed, the ordinary temae as well:  if the chakin is used to remove the lid of the kama, then the chakin rests on the lid of the kama until it is closed.  Only then is the chakin placed on the ō-ita.

Four Simple Words [Minka + Sebastian]
Written with @kellyminks
Takes place last night (Tuesday) in Central Park, Downtown Bayview.
Sitting on the edge of his bed, Sebastian stared down at the sparkling ring nestled securely in the black velvet box, same as it had always been since he'd purchased the piece almost a month previous. However, unlike those passing days, today was different. Today, he was going to ask her. Running his free hand through his hair, he blew out a long breath, stomach fizzing. He wasn't nervous - a realization that surprised him more and more as he’d been making plans to ensure things went off without a hitch. Instead of anxiety and nerves, he was simply excited as hell to get this show on the road. To start the rest of his life with the woman he loved. To have undeniable, tangible proof that this was the person he wanted - and needed - to be with for the rest of his life. That Minka would turn him down not even a possibility in his mind as he smiled to himself thinking about how his girlfriend would react to the series of instructions he was about to send her to put things into motion.
Closing the ring box, he scritched his fingers through the long, silky fur of the dog sprawled across the bed next to him. “Whaddya think, huh?” He cooed at Ludwig, “She’s a keeper, right?” Laughing gently at the snort he received in response, Sebastian checked his watch one last time before rolling off the bed to start getting everything ready that he needed to make his way over to Central Park.
Minka sat at her kitchen island, sipping on her tea, as she scoured through recipe after recipe on her laptop for new ideas she wanted to put together for the next few cooking classes. It was a task she genuinely enjoyed and could get lost in for hours looking for the next yummy thing to bring to life with her class. “We’re officially in Spring,” Minka mumbled to Chewy who was resting by her feet, “I know it doesn’t feel that way, but that’s what the calendar says, so you think we should start with some lighter fare?” Minka scanned the web page and a certain avocado recipe caught her attention, “Oh, we definitely need to do that.” Minka took out  her small notepad she used for groceries and began listing what she would need and the date she’d need it for.
Once she had it all sorted, she turned her attention back to the computer, “you know what, I was meaning to check something out,” the brunette recalled, beginning to type ‘chicken sweater patterns’ into the Google browser. Even as she did, she couldn’t help the small giggle picturing Sebastian’s face if he knew what she was up to. She made a mental note to send him a picture of the one she settled on.
Tossing the phone onto the bed, Sebastian’s excitement kicked his heartbeat into overdrive as he texted Minka, asking her to meet him in Central Park in about an hour - knowing that’d give Sebastian enough time to get ready, and for Chace to play the part he’d been cajoled into playing. There’d been a lot of things about Chace moving to Bayview that Sebastian had been unspeakably grateful for, but having a friend in your life - and now in his neighborhood - that he could bribe with beer and a home cooked meal came in especially handy that week. Sebastian smiled warmly at his friend’s joking earlier that day that Minka would say yes, which Sebastian returned with a heatless threat to not be late. Confident that the other man would come through for the favor he’d been asked, Sebastian got moving, showering, shaving and putting in a concerted effort for the most important trip to the park he’d ever take in his life. Grinning madly at his reflection, he carefully pulled on the plaid, double breasted suit that Minka favored on him so much.
He’d gone through a hundred different scenarios and mentally drafted a hundred different speeches for this moment. Pulled himself back from blurting out the question as they strolled hand in hand through the Place de la Concorde in Paris; whispered admissions of missing one another over the phone while he was in Atlanta, and the overwhelming urge to just ask her, despite having left the ring at home, that previous Sunday over Easter dinner at his parents’ house. He’d been torn between making it a spectacle; a celebration of how much he loved this woman, and keeping it small and intimate; something precious between them. In the end, Sebastian felt that bringing things back to where they started was the one that made his heart - and hopefully hers - the happiest.
Checking three times that he had the ring box in his pants pocket, he searched through his closet for the last needed item for his carefully selected outfit. “Ah-ha!” He said quietly as he pulled the awkwardly shaped accessory from the recesses, smiling at the object in question. Checking for the perfect imperfection on the side, he slipped it over his arm and practically bounced on his toes, smirking, as he texted Minka purposefully: Sorry babe, running a few minutes late - meet you at our bench in 15? xx
Minka was in the middle of reading how to take correct measurements to properly fit a bird with a sweater when her phone buzzed. Seeing it was text from Sebastian immediately made the sides of her mouth turn up in a smile. Reading it, and seeing that he was requesting her to go to the park Minkas brow creased wondering if everything was okay. The bench was a spot they shared all types of news  and conversation so it didn’t necessarily mean anything was wrong, but curiosity was getting the best of her. Texting back - I’ll head there now xx - Minka closed what she was working on and announced her plans to her pups, “Momma’s going to the park for a bit and then has class. You two stay here and man the house.” Even as the words left her mouth, Minka couldn’t help giggle at the thought of her two small dogs doing anything to protect the home against any sort intruder. Slipping on her white converse and throwing on a canvas jacket over her t-shirt, Minka grabbed her keys and purse and headed out.
Arriving rather quickly with there being no traffic, Minka found a parking spot close to where the bench was located and started for it. Hearing her phone buzz again Minka checked it and saw Sebastian’s update that he was running late. Having plenty of time before her class began, it didn’t bother her any. She sent him back the ‘blowing heart emoji’ and telling him to take his time. Finding her way to the familiar bench, Minka was happy to find it unoccupied and took a seat, going into her assumed position of tucking one leg up under the other. Settling in and taking a deep breath, letting the chilly air fill her lungs, the brunette was happy for the time outside and the quiet that came with it. A few minutes passed and Minka checked her phone again out of habit, but there were no more texts. With no sign of Seb yet, she opened up the Instagram app to poke around in and kill the time till he arrived.
Standing across the street from Central Park, Sebastian rolled his eyes fondly at the long string of exclamation points that Chace, his partner in crime for the evening, sent in reply to being asked if he was ready. Switching his phone to silent, he stuffed it into the inner pocket of his jacket and slipped the last piece of his outfit over his head, settling it comfortably around his shoulders.
Sebastian entered the familiar surroundings of Central Park and had to hold himself back from racing down the path towards the bench where he knew Minka would be waiting. Grinning brightly at the few people he passed, he didn’t let their questioning looks as to why a man in a three-piece suit and bright orange life vest was laughing to himself in the park at dusk. He knew he probably looked crazy, but for the sake of this evening, he couldn’t care less.
Coming around the bend in the pathway, his smile kicked up another notch at seeing Minka sitting on the bench, staring at her phone. Deciding not to call her attention to him just yet, he slowed his strut down to an amble and took her in. His heart thudded happily against his rib cage; his throat squeezing slightly at what he was about to do, how comfortable and excited and confident he felt about taking this next step - all thanks to this woman who held his heart in her hands.
He’d worked hard in his therapy appointments to sort out his issues, to be the most present and capable partner for this woman who had pulled him back from the brink of depressed self-destruction. He’d ticked all the boxes taking Tony to buy a ring, going to LA to ask her father for his blessing, and attempting to orchestrate a proposal that was personal and heartfelt. His dress shoes clicked sharply on the pavement as he sped up again; no time like the present - he’d waited long enough.
Minka was immersed in the homemade bread tag on the social media app toying with the idea that she should have her class make their own bread when a text from her best friend came through breaking her from her zoning. Answering quickly, then checking the time, Minka looked around to see if she could spot Sebastian yet. There was a person approaching wearing something bright orange, and Minka smiled politely about to get back to the pictures, but did a double take as it registered that the offender was her boyfriend.
“What in the..” she trailed off, her smile growing. Minka took him in, a confused look plastered to her face; why was he wearing her favorite suit of his to the park? Did he have an event she had forgotten about? But mostly, why was he wearing a life vest? And where did it come from... The question stilled in her mind as it occurred to her where she had seen that life vest before.
Shoving her phone in her pocket, the woman stood - now completely amused - so she could hug him when he got close enough. “Baby, what in the world?!” Minka giggled, “is that - tell me that’s the same life vest from the cruise!” Her head shook in disbelief, laughter still bubbling out of her. As he got closer, Minka eyed him, a quizzical smile on her mouth, “I feel so under dressed,” she teased, “what is- what’s going on, honey?”
The side of Sebastian’s mouth curled into a pleased smirk as Minka did a double take, not realizing it was him at first. He shrugged one shoulder slightly, his smirk turning into a full, nose-scrunching grin as she called out to him, confused, as he continued his approach; huffing a laugh in response to the bright, beautiful sound of her laughter.
Smiling adoringly, he nodded once to let her know it was in fact the life vest from the cruise, and brought a hand up to point to the faint red stain near his collarbone, “your daiquiri stain and all,” he called, feeling very pleased that she had remembered that first afternoon they’d spent running around a cruise ship, egging each other on to do increasingly stupid tasks with the pure goal of making one another laugh. Sebastian hadn’t felt joy like that in weeks before that day, and it hadn’t taken long after for him to fall head over heels for her.
Stopping a few feet away, Sebastian shook his head gently, “you look perfect,” he breathed reverently, “absolutely perfect.” With a wink to silence her questioning, Sebastian pressed a quick finger to his lips and took the three final steps to be right in front of Minka and dropped to one knee.
Following his hand to the stain on the vest, Minka could instantly recall that sweet memory - that whole wonderful day - over in her head. The one where they spent the day together on the cruise ship, laughing and talking and setting each other up for the silliest things the other could imagine in what would be the start of their now infinite game of truth or dare. The day where it became clear that something was different - that she felt something different - than before about the man in front of her now.
Minka, still in shock, laughed confused and more to herself then to him questioned, “you stole it?” She was about to press further about the suit, about the vest, when to her complete surprise Sebastian went down to his knee. Her eyes rounded as she tried to process what was actually happening, what him being on one knee could mean. Without him saying a word, Minka knew in her heart, and it seemed her eyes were just as quick to process as she felt them fill with tears.
“Seb,” she breathed, not really sure what to follow that up with as the rest of the world seemed to fade out, and the only thing she was aware of was the two of them. Her hand found its way over her mouth that seemed to have a mind of its own as she tried to keep her smile under control, but the sides kept pulling it further and further. Minka dipped her head, her eyes squeezing shut for a moment, pressing out the first of what she was sure would be many tears, and then opening them to make sure this wasn’t some beautiful dream. Gathering herself together the best she could, she looked down lovingly at Seb as if letting him know with nothing more than just her expression how much she was in love with him.
Kneeling on the cold concrete, Sebastian smiled up at Minka, eyes never leaving hers as his nose began to prickle with telltale emotion. Grasping her hand that wasn’t pressed over her mouth, he engulfed it with both of his own, pressing a closed mouth kiss to the back of it; taking the moment to compose himself. He’d rehearsed what he wanted to say in this moment so many times; it figured now that it was here, everything he’d planned completely fled his mind. Clearing his throat quietly to try and push down the lump that still resided there, Sebastian began to speak softly, putting as much adoration into his tone as the words spilled out of him.
“Before you, my life was a mess,” Sebastian started, voice thick with emotion. “I’d backed myself into such a dark corner… I didn’t know how to even start to find my way back out. I was lost, hurting, and my heart was so lonely. Then you came back into my life, and,” he gave a tiny sigh, a devoted, besotted smile crawling across his face, “you were this beacon of light, this - this sense of hope and salvation I didn’t think I deserved, but couldn’t help but follow.”
“I - when we sat on that bench,” he nodded his chin at the spot the both knew to be behind them, “and I told you I had feelings for you, I had no idea what was in store for us. To have the privilege of knowing what it’s like to be so loved and cared for by you - is humbling, and it’s made the rocky journey to get to this place more than worth it. You saved me, Minka,” Sebastian’s face crumpled as his emotions threatened of overwhelm him; continuing in a voice that wobbled, “and I promise not to waste another ten years, and will spend the rest of our lives together working to honor that, and show you how much I appreciate, respect, and am completely, helplessly in love with you.”
Sebastian sniffed and blinked furiously to keep his emotions in check. “You make me laugh, you make me brave, you make me a happier, better man than I could ever be on my own.” Giving her a watery smile, he sniffed again, reaching one hand to pull the now familiar black velvet box out of his pocket. Holding it on his palm for a beat, he opened the lid and turned the box to face Minka, the ring nestled there twinkling in the lamplight of Central Park.
“Minka Dumont Kelly, whom I love with everything that I am,” he gave her a lopsided, self deprecating smile, huffing a quiet laugh as a rogue tear escaped out of the corner of his eye; doing nothing to dim the elation he felt in this moment, “truth or truth: will you marry me?”
Minkas heart thudded wildly as Sebastian began speaking. She had imagined what this moment might look like if it were to happen for her: maybe in bed surrounded by their beloved dogs, maybe at the top of the Eiffel tower, or snuggled up in their robes on her back porch. But this, this perfect spot, the spot where they first admitted they had seen each other as more than friends and wanted to pursue a relationship with one another was suddenly the only place that made sense. Of course Sebastian would choose the place most special and most intimate to the two of them; it made every other idea pale in comparison.
And his words. His beautiful words that Minka tried to soak in despite feeling light headed with a joy she had never felt before. If a moment had ever taken her breath away - this was it. She nodded as he spoke, letting him know she was hearing him as he brought them through the journey that got him to this moment. Minka didn’t think it was possible but she could feel her love for the man expand with each account he gave. What a past they had both survived to get here, to be together. Her one hand grasped his tightly, squeezing it for assurance, as the other she could feel gently vibrating with adrenaline against her cheek.
Then, when he reached back and produced the small box that held the most gorgeous ring she had ever seen, Minka felt her breath catch in her throat and she swayed forward as a mixture of surprise, excitement, and pure happiness overcame her. Tears spilled from her eyes as they bounced from the ring to Sebastian’s face, his emotion undoing Minka even more. Taking her shaky hand she gently reached down and carefully wiped away his tear. Keeping her hand pressed to his cheek, Minka smiled at him adoringly, “I love you so much,” she sniffed. “Yes. A thousand times over - yes.” No word had ever come as easy, or felt as right as that simple three letter word. Even without seeing it, Minka was sure she was wearing the biggest brightest smile she ever had.
Sebastian swept his thumb over the knuckles of Minka’s hand, hers squeezing his tightly, as he spoke. The sight of her tears, although they were happy ones, was nearly enough to undo him as he continued to pour his heart out to the one person he trusted enough to protect it. Eyes widening, he braced their joined hands together tightly as she swayed, a chuff of laughter escaping him as wondered if that was a good sign when he showed Minka the ring he’d spent more than one afternoon agonizing over with Tony.
Warmth bloomed in his stomach as he felt her gentle fingertips sweep away the trail of moisture that ran down the side of his face, Sebastian pressing a dry kiss to the heel of her hand as it rested there. While he genuinely didn’t doubt that she would accept his proposal, the rush of excitement that rocketed through him as she answered in the affirmative, blinking slowly as another tear escaped and attempted to steal between their skin where it met. “I love you,” Sebastian answered, as he took the ring out of the box and slid it onto her left hand, “and I can’t wait to spend the rest of our lives together,” he said voice now shaking harder as his already turbulent emotional state met the rush of adrenaline flooding his system.
Ring settled, he took a moment to admire it on her hand before pressing his lips to her knuckles before standing - heedless of the cumbersome lifejacket still hanging around his neck, and cupped her face in both of his and kissed her properly, his own tears mixing with hers. Not able to pull her as close as he’d like, he stepped back; ripping the orange covered offender off of himself and dropped it on the ground next to them. Stepping back into Minka once more, he playfully dipping her backwards while kissing her soundly, infusing into it all of the happiness exploding inside him. He continued to ignore the world around them - the chirping of crickets, the jogger giving the two of them a wide, bemused berth, the far-off sound of someone unseen whooping in celebration - until the need for oxygen became too pressing, and gently brought them upright, not taking his hands off of her.
When Sebastian slipped the ring on her finger, Minka couldn’t help but stare, slack jawed. It was the most stunning thing that had ever adorned her body. “I - I can’t either. God, Seb, it’s so beautiful,” she breathed, still in a state of shock. Pulling herself back into the moment, Minka smiled as Seb stood, kissing him back with matched emotion. When he stepped back, she couldn’t help but giggle as he discarded the familiar bulky vest. Happy to be able to press closer against him, her hands found their way to either side of his face, keeping him nice and close as they kissed again.
Silently damning the need for oxygen when they had to finally pull apart, Minka’s hands traveled around to the back of his neck, hooking her fingers together. “Is this real life?” She asked rhetorically, looking up at him through her wet lashes; the most love drunk smile plastered to her face. “This feels too amazing to be real.” Giving a soft shake of her head, more laughter bubbled up from inside of her, “God, I’ve never felt this happy in my entire life.” Minka could feel warm tears breaking free and slowly rolling down her cheek. Of course she had so many questions: how long had he been planning this, who knew about it, and all the other little fun details that she’d eventually ask, but would let wait for now. Standing there together, in each other’s arms soaking up all the emotion of the moment, was the only thing that mattered currently.
“I didn’t know - do you like it?” Sebastian confirmed, “I - we can swap it out if you don’t; I was a bit in over my head,” he admitted with a rueful laugh and a wry smile. Leaning in to kiss her again, he used his thumbs to wipe away the tears that spilled over Minka’s cheeks. Skating his fingers down her arms as she wrapped hers around his neck, Sebastian gently gripped Minka’s hips, thumbs making gentle circles there. Elation wasn’t a word he often equated to his life, but it was singing in his blood as they stood in Central Park, peppering kisses to the damp skin of her cheeks.
Chuckling lowly as he brought one hand up to clear her face of another tear, he answered, “I hope it’s real,” before meeting her own lovestruck smile with his own. Part of him wanted to race and tell everyone they knew - mind briefly jumping from their families’ and friends’ reactions - and broadcast to everyone that this was it - the person who comes along once in your life that you have to cling to with everything you have. Another part of him wanted to stay frozen in this moment forever, to clutch close the feeling of overwhelming love and excitement he felt that they were going to be married, something he never thought would happen for him. “I love you,” he murmured again, resting his chin on her head as he pulled her in for a tight hug. “You and me, baby, forever,” he promised her in the rapidly fading light of dusk.
“Like it?” Minka asked exasperated. “Oh my God, its gorgeous, its - swap it? No way never.”  She said firmly with a shake of her head, another wide toothy smile spread across her face. “Its perfect. I love it.” As they stood there together, exchanging small touches and soft kisses, Minka couldn’t help getting completely lost in his eyes every time Sebastian would look at her. She had always found comfort in them, a sense of home, but they way he looked at her with so much love and adoration was something she could barely wrap her head around; no one had ever looked at her quite like that. “I love you,” she said back with matched conviction, resting her head against his chest, breathing him in.
At his promise, Minka nuzzled in a little more, the soft fabric of his suit rubbing against her cheek, “I really like the sound of that.”  She couldn’t think of anyone else she would rather do forever with than the man whose arms were currently wrapped around her. Her mind began swirling with all the next steps they’d take - moving in together, planning their wedding, where they could honeymoon - but it was all fun, exciting thoughts. The corner of her mouth pulled into a smile at a particular one and she just had to ask, “does your mom know?” Minka knew that if there was another person on the planet who would have matched enthusiasm about this, it would be his mother.
Pulling her closer to wrap his arms more securely around her, Sebastian hummed, pleased, deep in his chest. “As long as you like it,” he said quietly. Bringing up a hand to quickly brush away the lingering moisture in his own eyes before cupping the back of her head, he pressed another kiss to her silky brown hair as he carded his fingers through it.
“About that,” he pulled back slowly with a shark-like grin growing over his face, “the only reason I was able to surprise you is that I didn’t tell her about any of it,” he laughed. “Tony came with me to pick out the ring, and I spilled my ever-loving guts to Zach,” he said with a look that said ‘obviously’. Blushing, he broke eye contact to continue, “that overnight trip to LA? The Marvel meeting and had to practically insult you to talk you out of tagging alone?” Sebastian gave Minka an exasperated grin, tickling his fingers under her chin, “that was me going to ask Rick for his permission to propose to you,” he smiled fondly. “Which I think he appreciated - and said yes, for the record,” he teased, “but Ma is completely in the dark about the whole thing,” the sly grin returned to his face.
“None of them knew I was doing this tonight,” he admitted, carefully omitting Chace’s involvement to save one last surprise for another point down the line. “And I can’t tell you how many times I nearly broke and asked you, especially at my folks on Easter,” he laughed at the weeks of his own desperate attempts to find the right time. “I thought since I got to tell Tony and Rick that you should get to tell one of our parents, too - so I saved what no doubt is going to be the craziest reaction for you,” he rolled his eyes fondly imagining his mother’s overzealous reaction. Laughing so hard he had to take a minute to pull himself together, “imagine how bad she is gonna freak.”
When Sebastian pulled back, Minka noted the grin he was sporting and with confession after confession her eyes grew rounder, “wait, wait, wait, oh my God!” Her hands flew to her mouth as she started to join in his laughter, “so, first of all, my dad kept a secret that long? Holy crap. But also, you really asked him?” Minka questioned, her small voice getting higher. She gave an approving nod, “that was incredibly sweet of you, thank you.” She leaned forward and kissed the cleft of his chin. She could only imagine how much that meant to her father. It made sense to her that Tony knew, and of course Zach would, but the fact that his mother was totally in the dark made Minka laugh just as hard as Sebastian. “Oh my God, I can’t believe it, she is going to freak out! It’s her Easter miracle!” Trying her best to compose herself, she shook her head, still smiling ear to ear, “Well, we’ll have to tell her soon because I have a feeling if we don’t she’ll sense something is up otherwise.”
Nodding with a mix of shared surprise and pride, Sebastian couldn’t keep his face-splitting grin in check as Minka clarified that he’d asked her dad. “Of course I asked him,” he said indulgently, “I wanted to do this right, and imagine the line of people waiting to kick my ass if I hadn’t,” winking at her to let her know he was only joking. Blushing ridiculously as she pressed a kiss to his chin, he gently nodded, not wanting to discourage her from more kissing, but letting her know he was listening. “She’s gonna go absolutely nuts,” he giggled, taking her left hand in his to admire how much better the ring looked there than in the box it’d be living in for almost a month. Pressing a kiss to her knuckles, he smiled down at her, “so what do you say we quit making a scene in the park, let me make eyes at you while you make some delicious pasta; then go revel in planning how we’re going to pull a fast one on her?” Sebastian propositioned, scooping the life vest off the ground, and tugging on Minka’s hand to join him running through the park, bursting with excitement and good news.

I know I must keep things fresh around here and bring you the latest interior design trends to not only keep you informed but also to inspire many of you who come to Home Bunch to find inspiration for a renovation, for a new-construction or simply to find ideas for small changes around the house, such as a new rug, new lighting… you get the idea, but featuring a full house done to perfection like this one is not always easy to find. So being honored and grateful are just two of the many feelings I had while preparing this house tour for you.
I have shared this talented interior designer’s work in the past, and although I have always admired her work, I now see how impeccable and impressive a home can become through her designs.  Allison Campbell of Allison Campbell Design (@allisoncampbelldesign) spent many hours working on collecting all details for this post, which I highly recommend you to bookmark and pin your favorite images so you can always come back to it whenever you feel in need of some interior design inspiration. Here, Allison shares more insights on the design of this new home in Salt Lake City, Utah:
“As I began working with the homeowner on their project, I was able to get a feel for the overall picture I would like to create for them. Something that would be light and airy, all while staying incredibly warm and inviting. I wanted timeless and classic, while touching on the current trends and incorporating the homeowner’s personalities. I feel like the final product accomplished just that.”  – Allison Campbell

century of the child: growing by design, 1900-2000 the museum of modern art, new york july 29th to november 5th, 2012
‘century of the child: growing by design, 1900-2000’ is the first major overview of the subject of childhood as a means for modern design thinking in the 20th century. more than 500 items on display are on loan from both individuals and institutions within the U.S. and abroad, bringing together a vast archive of pieces which include small objects, toys and games, health and therapeutic products, furniture, books to public spaces such as school architecture and playgrounds.
the show draws its references from swedish reformer and social theorist ellen key’s manifesto ‘century of the child’ which presents the ‘universal rights and well-being of children as the defining mission of the century to come.’ using this as her backbone, curator juliet kinchin surveys the 20th century, presenting both individual and collective visions of a child’s material world, from utopian dreams for the ‘citizens of the future’, to more realistic approaches which address the darker realities of life and having to deal with politics, conflict and exploitation.
organized into seven chronological sections: new century, new child, new art; avant-garde playtime; light, air, health; children and the body politic; regeneration; power play; and, designer better worlds; a range of different concepts are presented revolving around the tangible and more physical aspects of children’s design – type, material, scale, and geographical representation.
‘century of the child…’ is illustrated by key pieces from the history of design like isamu noguchi’s designs for play equipment; pieces by charles rennie mackintosh, marcel breuer, alvar alto; alma siedhoff’ buscher’s bauhaus nursery furniture; a high chair by gerrit rietveld; poster and book illustrations by el lissitzky; and roald dahl’s ‘the gremlins’, rounding out with the products of today like the ‘XO laptop from the one laptop per child program’, etch-a-sketch, LEGO building blocks, as well as the slinky.
gerrit rietveld (dutch, 1888–1964) child’s wheelbarrow, 1923 (manufactured 1958) painted wood 12 1/2 x 11 3/8 x 33 1/2″ (31.8 x 28.9 x 85.1 cm) manufactured by gerard van de groenekan the museum of modern art, new york gift of jo carole and ronald s. lauder © 2012 artists rights society (ARS), new york / beeldrecht, amsterdam
designboom posed a few questions to curator juliet kinchin about the exhibition itself and what her favourite toy was as a child:
designboom: how have the thematic categories represented in the exhibition been determined? juliet kinchin: the sections are arranged broadly chronologically and the thematic focus within each reflects shifting ideas of both the modern in design and modern concepts of childhood. we tried to focus on particular centers, individuals, ideas where there was a confluence of children and new ways of thinking about design, innovation, and the future shape of society.
jean prouvé (french, 1901–1984) school desk, 1946 enameled steel and oak 28 1/2 x 45 x 34″ (72.4 x 114.3 x 86.4 cm) manufactured by ateliers jean prouvé, nancy the museum of modern art, new york dorothy cullman purchase fund

designboom: what are some of the key insights you gained on children’s design while curating ‘century of the child…’?
juliet kinchin: i think the best design is that which is flexible, stimulating, and leaves room for open-ended, playful interaction. these qualities are not just good for children, but benefit us all.

designboom: how have political and social circumstances influenced the development of toys and architectural spaces for children?
juliet kinchin: all design functions within larger political as well as aesthetic, intellectual and economic contexts, and therefore bears the imprint of the values we prioritize, our sense of national identity, and changing attitudes to the relationship between adults and children, to differences between boys and girls. children have great emotional pulling power that has been exploited in advertising and propaganda throughout the 20th century. because children are the physical embodiment of the future, any designer intent on shaping a future vision must bear them in mind.
omnibot 2000 remote-controlled robot, c. 1985 various materials 24″ x 15″ x 14″ (61 x 38.1 x 35.6 cm) manufactured by tomy (formerly tomiyama), katsushika, tokyo space age museum/kleeman family collection, litchfield, connecticut

designboom: who played an important role in shaping the existing material world of children?
juliet kinchin: adults of one description or another, although recently children have begun to participate more proactively in the design process. at points throughout the twentieth century designers have joined forces with social reformers, educational and medical specialists, government agencies, child psychologists, parent associations–to shape the material world of children.
ladislav sutnar (american, born bohemia [now czech republic]. 1897–1976) build the town building blocks, 1940–43 painted wood thirty pieces of various dimensions largest smokestack: 7 3/8 x 2″ (18.7 x 5.1 cm) the museum of modern art, new york gift of ctislav sutnar and radoslav sutnar

designboom: how has the world view of a child influenced that of adult psychology?
juliet kinchin: in vienna at the beginning of the 20th century sigmund freud revolutionized our understanding of early childhood development and experience within the adult psyche. the concept of an “inner child” is here to stay.
joaquín torres-garcía (uruguayan, 1874–1949) three figures, c. 1925 painted wood, twelve interchangeable pieces dimensions vary daniela chappard foundation © 2012 artists rights society (ARS), new york / vegap, spain

juliet kinchin: children exert tremendous economic power as consumers, and manufacturers and designers are increasingly attentive to their needs and desires, or at least to how to manipulate them. but areas like comics, film animation, video games–initially targeted at children–show how child-appeal in design can also hook an adult audience. children encourage designers to think in terms of design that is flexible, robust, simple and imaginatively stimulating; such qualities, by extension, benefit us all.
