#the advice for depression is to do the things that you used to enjoy and wait for them to help again #it's good advice and it does work to an extent but listen #i don't choose when i find things enjoyable i fixate on a topic and everything becomes enjoyable again #it's not like doing hobbies or reading or cleaning or eating meals helps THAT much #it just keeps me busy and sane and makes my body keep working until i get some good brain chemical shipped in #then I'll remember everything i've been putting off but at least i'll be relatively functional at that point #it's not that all the depression tips are useless. i'd be much worse if i didn't do any of them #as it is i've made it over 25 years without even developing a nicotine addiction or a crippling dependence on alcohol #my joints are even still fine mostly and i can tell when to get out of a situation so i can keep living #now i even know when i want to be around someone and when i don't! #i'm basically great at existing i've studied with the masters #still.

i'd forgotten* how much historical analysis of Homer Thucydides does in the introduction to The Peloponnesian War - he's still not questioning that it's a true account of things that happened**, but he does question the romantic notions put forward by Homer -

if Agamemnon won, he says, it wasn't because of the oath sworn by the other suitors of Helen, it was because of his dominant regional power. he also tries to break down how much power Agamemnon could have over nearby islands based on Argos' current power and influence.

i don't have much of a larger point here, just that 1) it's interesting to see someone interrogating a foundational text of their culture this way (i would describe it as "tentative" and "restrained," perhaps because of fear of backlash from readers, but there's no real justification for that) 2) i'm glad to be reminded that people have been engaging in this kind of criticism of Homer for 2400 years 3) it's a good reminder of how great an extent of time*** is covered by the term "the ancient world" - Thucydides' analysis here is, in spirit, not all that different from a modern historical reading of Homer - we're both trying to glean understanding of a bygone culture from a text from whose full context we're removed by centuries.

I think sometimes you just have to make peace with the fact that your actual hobby is collecting books. And that that's okay.

#i used to devour eight books a week up until I was about 22 #i couldn't fathom leaving anything in the house unread #then it's like my brain maxed out #coincided with my cptsd manifesting in crippling depression‚ triggering my bipolar #and hitting that mid-20s adhd wall where all your coping mechanisms fall apart #it's just been getting worse ever since #i can no longer read anything but fanfic #i was able to make a great headway through alexis hall's work but then I fell into a hyperfixation again so #bye bye everything else #i couldn't read comics even when I was back to hyperfixating on comics #i can't absorb things and when I do I can't hold them in my head #i used to be able to pull out entire passages of my favourite books from memory #now I can barely remember what happened in them #sometimes i wonder whether it even mattered that i used to be such a voracious reader #sure it gave me writing skills but i was never able to do much with them because of the complete mental and physical breakdown #and people young enough to be my kids write better than I ever did #i still have the thirst and hunger for knowledge and stories #but no capacity for it at all #books #reading #just adhd things #actually adhd #burnout #book collection #knee of huss
