“Andrea couldn’t have survived bc of the running theme in the show of deconstructing the brodude crime genre through devastating fallout” “Andrea couldn’t have survived bc Jesse taking her and Brock to Alaska w him would have been too saccharine” first of all idc nothing excuses the show treating their only woc character that way and second of all BET okay so after Jesse gets busted from the compound he either immediately goes to Andrea’s house to make sure her and Brock are actually okay or he goes to Skinny and Badger’s like in El Camino bc Jack making explicitly detailed threats against her and Brock to keep him in line made him realize exactly how little protection he could actually offer them, but she shows anyways either bc she saw the news and knows who his friends are or bc Skinny and Badger called her. She offers for her and Brock to come with him to Alaska, so they could be a family again, bc the foundation of their relationship (they have one onscreen in this au) is a desperate, scrabbling longing for a functioning family. She is either estranged from her parents or they are dead, her little brother is dead, she thought she’d finally gotten her storybook ending with Brock’s father, but that didn’t work out, to put it mildly. She knows Jesse isn’t a bad guy, because she knows a thing or two about bad guys. None of them ever treated her so well.
So Jesse tells her about Tomás. He tells her, like Walt telling him about Jane, that he is responsible for the death of someone she loved. But unlike Walter, he doesn’t tell her this to make her feel helpless against him or to decide her fate for her, but to give her the freedom to make an informed choice. And she rejects him, because that was her brother. She rejects him and she tells him that, unlike Tomás, he’d always had a choice, he didn’t have to end up here, he could have gotten clean and landed on his feet because he was never eleven years old trying to make ends meet for his family, was he. He accepts this and her rejection with grace instead of trying to reel her back in. But she lets Brock hug him goodbye and give him the drawings he’d been making for him all those months apart, and when she hugs him goodbye at Brock’s prompting it doesn’t feel forced at all and he cries because he hasn’t been hugged like that in he can’t remember when, and she watches him limp his way back to the car as though trying to make sure he gets in safely.

The gag I fear is the spiderverse creators are probably patting themselves on the back for advancing racial equality or something by pushing Miles and Gwen together, even though he's blasé off Gwen in his source material, and they had to screw over Miles' connection to Tiana his actual girlfriend who is black, the other woc he actually fucks with, and his actual poc friends to do it. Meanwhile, they're potentially perpetuating a racist stereotype about black men/white women, and Gwen fans are behaving like some of the most entitled, ignorant, racist, obnoxious, Karens to black and hispanic fans in the fandom and demanding that all of Miles' love interests, who are woc, be abandoned for Gwen (INCLUDING HAILEY a beautiful black girl who is representing for the deaf community in Insomniac's Spiderman 2 game, and if they do that shit I'm done) and are literally going around saying woc characters are irrelevant to Miles' story.
The decision to attach Gwen to Miles' story and growing popularity to raise Gwen's visibility at Miles' expense and better written characters of color is qwhite something. I want to give the spiderverse creators the benefit of the doubt because ITSV is amazing, Miles is a goated black character in the films, the black solidarity in ATSV was done well, they've clearly done their best to be thoughtful/culturally sensitive in others ways, and there are hints in ATSV that part of Miles' arc in BTSV might be that he learns his feelings for Gwen don't have the depth and foundation he thought and he shouldn't seriously view her as a love interest (and hopefully he gets to say that to her and they don't white girl power that shit). But it's also like we've been here before where as soon as a black character gains any popularity they suddenly have to share their shine with a random white one and genuine black representation takes a back seat.
It kinda goes to show that even when you have some Black creatives in the room, we gotta remember misogynoir is still a possibility
Jessica and Margo are the only two Black girls that standout here, and we barely get anything out of Margo. Despite this, certain people are dead set on hating their entire existence
As much as I want to give the creators benefit of doubt, I’m just too used to getting my hopes up only to be disappointed

So I watched the Fantastic Beasts movies thorough as one ‘story’ as opposed to going years between instalments. And being in the comfort of my own home and pausing to pop the kettle on allowed me to pause and digest what I was watching.
I actually think the first movie is watchable albeit at times forgettable.
The second is when it goes off the rails mainly by how it repeated brutalises Women of Colour. I have a meta about how fucked it is that Nagini is a woman and is then kept as a pet by Voldemort. Cut for talk of sexual assult and rape.
The storyline that Lestrange (a white man) forced a Black women into marriage, brutalised her, left her to die in childbirth and then ‘replaced’ her. Serves no narrative purpose and literally makes no sense. How did anyone allow it to happen if she’s also a well connected pureblood? Where were the aurors? That whole storyline makes no sense unless it is just there to use the suffering of WoC as plot motivation. Leta dying to save the Scamanders is this nonsense repackaged within the same film.
Talking of cohersion we are supposed to root for Queenie and Jacob after she puts him under a love spell. She then joins the person who wants to rule muggles because she thinks he will allow her to finally marry Jacob.. Girl what???
Fundamentally FB doesn’t know if it’s a children’s film or if it’s for adults so it falls flat on both the whimsy and magic for children and the politicking for adults.
Why is Grindelwald’s campaign about taking over the muggles when less than 20 years later Voldemort’s is the same thing? It should be different and far more nuanced if they wanted to appeal to adults.
Also Grindelwald and Voldy both having similar ideas means that Dumbledore’s ideas laid the foundation for both wizarding wars?

TW: racism, antiziganism, whitewashing, uses of g slur, fatphobia, misgendering, ageism, toxic fandom, long post.
This post is a bit off topic but, as someone who has been following Marvel’s comic book industry for almost ten years now, I feel like it’s my duty to use my voice and not be quiet about the blatant shit show that is happening to a character that is also a member of the magic community and has been suffering a lot lately in the hands of people who have little to no regard towards her heritage.
It was just a rumor back then (and Donny Cates even denied it in the past) but it does seem that Feige is using the MCU to influence comic books in most recent runs, ESPECIALLY regarding certain characters.
Now, let’s be honest. This is not new. We all remember when the cast of the Fantastic Four reboot died in a explosion in the pages of Punisher #12, eight years ago. A clear retaliation at the movie and FOX’s terrible decisions. We all know that this is probably the reason why the first family book was cancelled as well. The group remained in the shadows and only Reed had a decent spotlight thanks to New Avengers v3 and Secret Wars, disappearing next along with Sue, the kids and the Future Foundation. They only returned fully with a new volume in 2018, and most fans’ dreams and hopes slowly died out with Dan Slott’s bad takes and writing (erasing Franklin’s X gene, putting three women to fight over a man, reversing Infamous Doom to his villain self and throwing away his character development just because he wanted Victor as a villain etc etc etc).
Tumblr media
Very well. Still, the FF survived. No one reversed Galactus into a cosmic cloud. No one turned Victor into a metallic guy with electric powers who wanted to marry Sue (thank the Vishanti). And whatever happened in the reboot (which I didn’t watch) certainly wasn’t adapted into comics.
Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m not here to gatekeep comic books. In fact, I’ve been committed to introducing them to my followers since day 1 on this hellsite. Unlike many fans, I didn’t grow up with them. Movies had a huge influence on me and I had a long journey. Movies and animated TV shows are part of the reason I dove into this universe, in the first place. Which is fine. I can take a bad adaption and move on.
What I can’t take is what they’re trying to do with Wanda, because it reeks of racism.
The whole point of this new Wanda volume is to give her the proper representation and atone for the years of colorism, a systematic problem that keeps happening in the industry. Just because she was portrayed as white in the past, it doesn’t mean she’s not a woc, especially when it’s said in canon that she has dark skin. There are plenty of roma people talking on this matter and how it’s meaningful to acknowledge that Wanda is brown, even when white roma people exist (1, 2, 3, 4).
The crew is in fact very committed to it, as stated by Steve Orlando here:
Tumblr media
Now, what is happening to the new Scarlet Witch volume? Two things. The blatant whitewashing in variant covers and their need to push the MCU into 616!Wanda, first by introducing Darcy and now deaging Agatha.
Let’s be clear. There was a MASSIVE effort from the team to portray Wanda's heritage, which has been constantly dismissed by the lack of effort from the artists.
Here’s one example, from Jeehyung Lee, tracing what I think is a k-pop singer (but I don't really remember her name so correct me if I’m wrong). In any case, she was traced over a korean woman. This is not the first problem with this artist since he also made the same with Storm’s model in MFF by tracing Charlize Theron over Ororo.
Tumblr media
In addition to anti-blackness, this is also an issue of interchangeable ethnicity, the same that happened to America Chavez, when she’s established as Puerto Rican, not Mexican, as the pin on her jacket suggests (and yes, her cast is also filled with anti-blackness. Nothing against Xochitl, but I touched this matter before when I wrote about DSIMOM. And yes, TAO’s MCU is also bad, very bad, very very very bad).
I just keep seeing this over and over again. You shouldn't be defending her whiteness. You *SHOULDN'T*. Unless you have a problem that Wanda is a brown romani woman. It’s imperative that people understand that representation matters and poc have been time and time whitewashed in this very same industry (Sunspot/Roberto da Costa is just one example and was also whitewashed in that terrible New Mutants adaptation).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The issue here is to push a problematic and harmful portrayal of Wanda on her comic book version. And it’s only happening to her due to the popularity of said character and artist.
More thant that, her stans ARE using Olsen’s Wanda to shield racism. Some of you are actually not even hiding it. The following is a list of racist comments and accounts. I’ll leave them under the cut in case people don’t want to see it.
Regarding the WV variant cover for Wanda #3 by David Nakamura:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And plain racism overall:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
On a side note...
Just today I was harassed by this troll here. And no, I’m not hiding your @ because you went to MY post and felt compelled to misgender me, be fatphobic and also god knows why felt entitled to call Wanda ableist (????)
Tumblr media
As I said, I didn’t grow up with comics. When I first met Wanda, I didn’t know she was neither Roma, Jewish or brown. And this itself is a problem because it should be clear, it should have been portrayed in the comics, it should have been common knowledge. All it takes is just to listen to people and understand the systematic racism and whitewashing in the comic book and cinema industries.
They ALWAYS double down on Wanda’s whiteness. No, darling, it’s not okay to stan two versions of the same character when time and time the marginalized one is a target of racism. When they weaponize every single attempt at calling out the harm that MCU has caused on her character to the point of even using reverse racism, ableism and many other blatant lies to slander 616!Wanda, when her MCU can do pretty much whatever she wishes because she’s white so that’s okay. And don’t even dare bring feminism here because you don’t care about woc. You only care about white women.
In any case, I just want to shed light on this matter because this effort of pushing MCU into comics isn’t happening to any other Marvel character, ESPECIALLY when the change is for the better. Wong is powerful, body-positive and having more than one-dimensional relationship in the MCU. Where’s the effort to do that in comics? Layla is literally the best part of Moon Knight. Where is she?
Why they want so bad to push a white woman on a book that is supposed to praise Wanda’s romani heritage? It’s obvious that they want to sell and some execs are siding with the portion of this toxic and racist fandom.
Comics are not perfect, we know that. But there has been a huge effort to support the marginalized voices in this industry. Marvel’s Voices, pride and heritage are all examples. Besides, they’ve always been political. Always.
What they’re doing to Wanda is evil and lazy. As an artist and colorist, it’s YOUR DUTY to search and at least be aware of what characters you’re trying to conceive. There’s no way variant artists didn’t see the main cover for issue #1 by Dauterman.
Tumblr media
This is not just ignorance. It’s a statement. A statement that it’s okay to ignore a marginalized group and its attempt to give visibility to said group. And Orlando knew that when he said he didn’t have control over the rest of the creative team.
It’s fine if the MCU wants to push some elements like they did in the past. But this is not just any element. It’s harmful and I’ll not be quiet about it. 616!Wanda is getting more and more marginalized, whereas her whitewashed version is praised and loved. And now there’s an attempt at reconciling both as if it was okay. It’s not. MCU!Wanda doesn’t know racism. MCU!Wanda joined Hydra. MCU!Wanda has the privilege 616!Wanda could never afford for being a brown roma woman. And now the racist fandom wants to claim both in order to erase 616!Wanda’s heritage and history of fighting racism.
All I can ask is, if you’re buying this comic book, DO NOT SUPPORT the variant covers. Let them rot. We know the racists are not supporting the book anyways. They’ll just buy the variant cover and that’s it.
PS: I’m not Roma so feel free to correct me in any aspect. Just using my voice to boost awareness.
PS²: Olsen stans DNI or else will be blocked at sight. I’m done with every single of you.

it makes me so mad knowing that the mandalorian show runners are pushing away din’s woc former love interest just to start up something bo-katan
i don’t even like the direction they’re going in within giving din a love interest at all but omera is literally Right there. she’s an established character who we have seen interact with din. they had a genuine connection and actual… chemistry? unlike din and bo-katan that ultimately feels forced and a little awkward
i feel like they’re trying to force this to have bo-katan support din’s new reign as the mand’alor, to act as a mentor, but they could have done that platonically. two former “enemies” banding together on the foundation of rebuilding their culture is undeniably more powerful than basing their reasoning to work together on romance
there is sooo much to discover about omera and so much potential for her and din. they’re both so… Mysterious. omera is a widow on a desolate, peaceful planet who can somehow work a shotgun?? what the hell happened there???? din and omera have so much to discover about each other, they should kiss!!!

Thinking about “unhinged women” rn and how white the trope is.
As a preface: I am a white person and I acknowledge that when I’m not observing hijab (and often even when I am) people assume I am a white cishet Christian woman.
I think that white readers oftentimes don’t consume books abt “unhinged women” unless they’re about white women. White women will always have the opportunity to be seen as “perfect” and “sinless” because we have gone out of our way to hide the fact that white women have always been major contributors to racism.
We (those who are labeled as white women and those who are accomplices in upholding white supremacy) hide that we were just as often owners of enslaved people, abusers of enslaved people, the reason that poc were killed, etc.
So having a white woman go off the rails and become “unhinged” plays into this fantasy where white women are assumed to be “perfect” and “sinless.” White women want to read about these things because it confirms that idea that is rooted in our minds: We are blameless. We are innocent. When we hurt other people, we are defying The Man.
We aren’t though. We are The Man as much as any other white man.
Don’t get me wrong, I love reading about unhinged women. As a mad individual I enjoy seeing how madness is interpreted in our society and how our society’s unrealistic expectations create madness.
But as white people we have to examine what it means to truly be “unhinged” as compared to being someone who thinks that this behavior is not at all related to white supremacy and racism.
-
I am excited to see what it means to be “unhinged” in the context of being a woc, something I am not going to pretend I have experience in. What are the stories of groups of people who have never been allowed to explore what “unhinged” behavior looks like (without being written off as “mad”)?
I am also excited to hear the thoughts of the wonderful woc who are the foundation of our book club.

as a woc, thank you for that post. something i and many of my friends who are also woc have been talking about lately are our complicated relationships with feminism, a movement that purports to be about advocating for women but is often so narrow and geared toward only a specific type of woman (white, straight, cis, wealthy, etc). of course, they won't say that, but when it comes time to advocate for woc or talk about the differences nonwhite women encounter, so many feminists are silent. but woc are expected to show up for feminism when it rarely shows up for us and criticized the harshest when we don't. it's such a massive betrayal, this insistence on "sisterhoods" and uplifting women that so plainly tells woc that our perspectives and experiences don't count.
i feel like we as a society would be in a much better place if people were interested in being intersectional with their feminism, in considering perspectives that aren't their own and working toward collective betterment for everyone. but white women seem more interested in prioritizing whiteness, being angry they don't have the same power as white men, than working toward creating a more equal society.
Of course!! Something that's very important to me in my own feminist, and general anti-racist, praxis is taking the time to find, collect, and distribute works by Non-White theorists. They're putting in so much work, the absolute least I can do as an ally is thoughtfully engage with their writings and encourage others to do so as well.
If you haven't read it before you might find a lot of recognition in Audre Lorde's "The Master's Tools Will Never Dismantle The Master's House" (here). It functions as a direct dialectal critique of the Feminism of the late 60's and 70's that Radical Feminism has its foundations in. The following quote sums it up relatively well though:
"If white American feminist theory need not deal with the differences between us, and the resulting difference in our oppressions, then how do you deal with the fact that the women who clean your houses and tend your children while you attend conferences on feminist theory are, for the most part, poor women and women of Color? What is the theory behind racist feminism?"
A Feminism that takes all experiences with womanhood into consideration and recognizes that Patriarchal power is only one of many cogs in the machine of systemic, institutional oppression is the most truly liberating Feminism in my opinion. If we have no solidarity we have no true liberation.

it really annoys me whenever makeup companies release new products and when the models are light-skinned east-asians, everyone in the comments are saying "can you please put poc in your marketing campaign?/stop ignoring poc"
there are a couple reasons why this upsets me, and i just need to get this off my chest
rant under the cut. tw/cw anti-asian racism, colorism
colorism - i understand the frustration because as a medium, tan-skinned southeast asian woc, more than half the time, makeup companies use models who are on the pale to light-medium spectrum. i'm smack in the middle on medium and their swatches aren't accurate to me, and if i'm having a hard time finding swatches for someone who is medium-skinned (and i'm not even that dark to begin with), then i can only imagine how much harder it is for someone who is tan, dark, and deep-skinned. there's a reason why i don't wear foundation anymore. aside from it being a personal preference, it's hard to find the right undertones and shade for southeast asian skintones (even when the company is found by a woc, and don't get me started on the colorism in the asian beauty market). they're either too cool, neutral, or too yellow/orange if it's warm. there's a severe lack of brown asians and other tan/dark-skinned poc. poc come in all colors- there are dark-skinned asians, light-skinned asians, white passing poc, but no matter their phenotype, they are still poc. which leads me to my next point
anti-asian racism - for some odd reason (which is not odd at all!), in my personal experience, both white people and non-asian poc are quick to dismiss asians when talking about racism. when people complain (and i've seen non-asian poc and white people say this) in marketing campaigns with light-skinned poc (typically east asians) featured, they're quick to say "it would be nice if you included a poc." i'm getting so angry and frustrated writing this because this triggers me to think of the 20 years of casual racism i experienced in my life. when an east-asian or light-skinned asian poc is used as a model, you're essentially saying asians are not poc. ASIANS ARE POC, EVEN IF THEY ARE LIGHT-SKINNED. yes, there are light-skinned asians and yes, the asian/asian-american experience is different from latino and black experiences, and yes, i am aware that asian/asian-americans have privilege. and this is a topic for another time about the model minority myth and how it's used to pit asians against latinos and black people, but when you dismiss asians as poc, you're erasing their experience with systemic racism. not all of us are doctors, lawyers, and engineers. as a southeast asian, i never benefited from the model minority because i am not the "right" asian. a lot of south and southeast asian countries have painful histories of imperialism, colonialism, and in some cases, genocide. to blanket all asians as "model minorities" and implying that asians are not poc or "poc enough" is downright disrespectful, hurtful, and painful. when you are complaining about light-skinned asians as models in makeup marketing campaigns, do not dismiss us and say "oh i wish they used a poc as their model." ASIANS ARE POC! i understand the frustration as a tan southeast asian woman, but you're being dismissive about the asian experience. it triggers me because i think of all the casual racism i experienced throughout my childhood and when talking about it to my poc friends, 95% of the time, my non-asian poc friends have told me, and i quote, "you don't experience racism. asians are doing better than white people too, you have nothing complain about. you're the good stereotype!" is downright hurtful when my teachers have looked down on me for not being as academically smart as my east asian classmates and ignore all the hard work, blood, sweat, and tears i put into my assignments, when my classmates have casually asked me if i eat dog, when in college my white professor and white classmate were talking about the winter olympics and said it was weird that asians eat dog and i told them that it's not your domestic dog, but a dog farm similar to how there are chicken and pig farms, to which my professor looked me dead in the eye in front of the whole class, said "well how are you gonna know the difference when you see the dog down the street?" and have the ENTIRE CLASS laugh at you when you are the only asian in that class. when covid started, a non-asian poc looked at me and the asian girl i sat next to and said "I guess you can't eat dog anymore huh with covid." when in my online class, a classmate of mine posted a drawing of a bat that wrote in very loud letters, "WHO ATE THE BAT?" when an older non-asian poc that i considered a friend said they'd recognize my sister by how she looks and pulled their eyes at me, when my classmates said i didn't look "asian enough" and proceeded to pull their eyes at me. when attending research conferences in higher education talking about students of color in their retention rates, representation, and academics, being told explicitly and when i asked why asians aren't included when they talked about poc, they said "there is no data included or provided on asians, we didn't find it necessary to include them" despite showing data that they had a good amount of asians in their student demographic when other research shows that southeast asians tend to have high rates of dropping out of college.
when complaining about the lack of darker skinned models when a light-skinned asian is used, then say "please use a darker skinned model" instead of "please use a poc." BECAUSE ASIANS ARE POC!!!!!!!!!!! I cannot stress this enough! i understand that people mean well and don't mean any harm by it, but again, it's downright hurtful to ignore and dismiss asians as poc. just say "use a darker skinned model/poc." at best, this is a colorism issue.
i apologize if my post comes off as rude, but i'm frustrated at being dismissed and having my experiences ignored or erased. i am not making this a competition on which group experiences the most amount of racism.
i understand people mean well, but i am so tired of being dismissed and not included in activism, and when i do speak up, i'm ignored. i am a poc, i deserve to take up space and talk about my experience. i deserve to exist

Random but I’m asking bc we have very similar beliefs and morals. I have this thing that idk if I’m wrong in thinking this or not so second opinion please 😭 i feel like it’s such a stupid requirement for people wearing makeup to need a face of concealer and foundation and contour. I think makeup is an art but when it’s done to hide so called blemishes, especially when it’s expected of WOC for us to fall into western standards, I start to wonder how much self determination is involved
no choice anyone makes is entirely isolated from societal influences i don’t think anything can be classified as purely internally self determined and that includes how makeup is worn. concealer and foundation etc isn’t necessarily a requirement but yeah you’re right in saying it’s a stupid expectation to attach to all makeup styles but you could say the same of other “artistic” makeup practices that adhere to any established practice/technique. and yeah makeup can be used by woc to feel more comfortable moving through societies with messed up beauty standards but i don’t think that’s really like. wrong. like obviously it’s fucked up that those standards exist but i don’t fault woc for being influenced by society and using the tools they have to feel comfortable. but like ofc that’s to a certain extent as well and of course it’d be great if we all collectively agreed to take action and shift beauty ideals but like the point we’re at RIGHT NOW that’s not necessarily our reality. at the end of the day makeup is a tool that can be used for art but at it’s core it’s the intent behind the tool that informs the classification of what you create with it and not the tool itself

as a WOC (I’m Filipino) i agree that Sophie being played by a WOC wouldn’t be great optic wise any which way, unless AOFAG is completely reworked for a post-me too world. but as a fan of the book, idk how the show could rework Benedict NOT asking Sophie to be his mistress bc imo that’s a significant plot point to drive his character development. like granville said in s1, he says he TALKS of doing all these things that go against polite society, but he never would. at this point benedict lives in his privilege comfortable world and his offer to sophie is a complete reflection of that. him recognizing later on that it was 1. fucked for him to ask in the first place cause it wasnt fair for sophie and 2. that he chooses to marry sophie instead is what brings his character development to a completion. ik this is technically all about how it all effects benedict, but I could also argue that sophie’s steady refusal to be his mistress “I love you but not that much. i dont love anyone THAT much” shows how strongly she holds her convictions as a romantic heroine. the foundational plot already makes for fantastic television. 🤷🏽‍♀️
I’m going to preface this with I’m sorry if this doesn’t totally answer your question! I don’t really have the same attachment to AOFAG so I think I might just be more ok with them scrapping the whole thing?
So I also didn’t know how they could retell AOFAG to make it work but then I got this ask and well it has some great suggestions. However I get why if you have a love for the book it would be frustrating to see them drop all parts of that book.
Admittedly I have laxer thoughts on the necessity of book accuracy in the Bridgerton series and even less so post S2.
But I think there is a way where Benedict is still floating through life with the ease his last name gives him but also resenting that last name and Sophie is still half way in two worlds trying not fall in love with this guy because it disrupts her plan for her life. And still tell a traditional Cinderella story without making Benedict incessantly ask Sophie to be his mistress but instead where he’s just falling in love with her and can’t love her the way he wants and recognizing for the first time in his life what actual hardship feels like.
Also I think Sophie getting to punish Araminta would give her a more satisfying arc as well.

IMO making Gamora a ravager hurt her character. There's no arguing that when it comes to the audience only characters who are guardians are receiving much attention. Those are the characters whose arcs are being praised. When it comes to performances that's where the focus is, which is particularly sad because Zoe killed it in the film. As you brought up even merch is focused on the guardians. I notice James Gunn is focused on the guardians as well as Rocket's friends. His only real interest in ravagers has been Yondu and Kraglin both of whom he made guardians at some point. That says everything.
As a lead Gamora helped form the guardians. Her desire to do something good with her life influenced how things moved forward. She created the foundation the story has been built upon with the other OG guardians. That's not the equivalent of joining the ravagers from a narrative or audience perspective. It would be like killing Tony Stark in the same way she was and then bringing him back in Endgame as something other than an Avenger and saying it's the same. Fans would have called that disrespectful to who he was and what his character represented.
Gamora was demoted from female lead too. She was the first woc lead and on a popular team she formed no less. It feels wrong that it's all because her abuser did something terrible and she had everything messed up for her. Vol 3 diluted how much of a leading role she had before by only having Peter attribute any part of the guardians to her. It also downplayed she was abused and came very close to covering up her murder all together with the memory loss comments and none of the characters even mentioning what happened in IW. except Peter in his magic cliff rant that made is seem the whole incident was relatively benign instead the horrifying experience it actually was for Gamora. I don't want to come across as hating but I feel like if a novice writer/director had done this it would come under fire. Some stuff I can see getting a pass, but avoiding conversation about her murder, moving her out of a leading role she had from the start and not giving her much development or arc after everything/this being the last film, is a little too much to ignore.
i think this is definitely fair...like i'm not fully against gamora being a ravager in her new life, but that final shot of her with her "real family" at the end after she leaves the gotg hurts me so much every time it's like twisting the already existing 5-year-old knife in my gut further 😭 peter gatekeeping being a ravager from her was so real lmao like you're so right king thank you
and yeah it all would've been better if gamora was still The Female Lead(TM) but she wasn't even that anymore which just felt so strange coming off the heels of vol 1 and vol 2 in the imax marathon. like wot
but yeah i agree with you on all fronts here anon. they never would've done this to one of the white male leads in the avengers lol i mean, those guys got Funerals 😧😧😧 like they got Grieved 😧😧😧😧😧😧

the dnd movie was SO mediocre that it was unable to hide the fact that it exemplified every social ill in holywood
white leading man has a dead wife, with the added spice of her being a black woman, so the child he can neglect yet earn the respect of by the is end is mixed race this time
that mixed race kid (no disrespect to the young actress btw theres no right way to look/be biracial/non white but it was clearly a deliberate choice in this circumstance) was also very fair skinned despite having darker skin as a baby??
the warrior lady, who is the only LIVING woc in the film, got all the cool fight scenes but her only characterization was "likes surrogate daughter" "supports white male lead" "is stupid when not in fight" and "jokes about how she likes small men". like id prefer the movie be about her and not sad man with dead wife no.one billion
the druid lady existed PURELY as utility and as an external reward for simon (props for him having the only name i could remember lmao) to have his arc. her backstory, which hints at and involves a systematic/larger oppression and trauma is brought up like, Twice. she literally could have been an inanimate object considering all she did was be Practically Useful and had basically no characterization besides "strong morals"
simon definitely had the most interesting arc but it was still playing into "black man struggles for the attention of a white woman who has the moral high ground on him" and he needs the encouragement of the white male lead to do any of his personal growth
the paladin guy was absolutely the best part of the movie but spent most of his painfully short screentime encouraging the one white guy instead of ANY of the other characters and was not in the film nearly enough
tldr: diverse casts are awesome and we need more of them but also like. when theyre just there to prop up and further the story of your typical white cishet male lead isnt not making progress so much as giving short sided people ammunition to tell you to stop complaining
also like it was just bland and uninspired. i know dnd is the foundation for genric fantasy but come on. there wasnt ANYTHING interesting to add???
