ASICS Tiger and WOEI have teamed up yet again to release a new GEL-Lyte III with premium materials and the kind of eclectic color palette fans of past collaborations have come to expect. The materials used are inspired by vintage WOEI materials of the 1980’s. The upper is constructed of dark and light grey nylon covered by similarly-colored suede with hits of light pink accents throughout. Light pink dashes through the center of the black midsole, which is also speckled with pink in the heel. The classic WOEI logo is found imprinted on the heel, as has been the case with past WOEI collaborations.

Vorfreude auf Bootstour zum Sintiadam

Worum's geht: Fernweh in der Ferne, einige Bilder zu meinen Erlebnissen

Ich habe in den letzten zwei Wochen versucht, die Sehnsucht nach Abenteuer in Schach zu halten. Was hat funktioniert:

Eine tolle Delphinbeobachtung auf der Flussmündung des Commewjine und Suriname River mit Besuch einer alten Zuckerrohrplantage, auf der etwas Geschichte zur brutalen Sklaverei vermittelt wurde. Durchführende Organisation war Unlock Nature.

Ein spontaner Wochenendtrip ins Schildkröten-Paradies Galibi in West-Surinam mit einer Nacht in der Hängematte. Daran hängend außerdem

ein Ausflug nach Saint Laurent du Maroni in Französisch-Guyana, wo ein kleiner Traum in Erfüllung ging: die Besichtigung des berühmt-berüchtigten Gefängnisses, in dem Papillon inhaftiert gewesen ist (habe mir auch gleich ein T-Shirt mit seiner Häftlingsnummer drauf besorgt). Durchführende Organisation war Jenny Tours

Kostspielige Besuche zum Luxuspool des Torarica Resort in Paramaribo (mein Reisegefährte Brian bekniete mich geradezu, dass wir den Tag dort verbringen, da er wahnsinnig unter der Hitze leidet).

Zwei Besuche zum Restaurant und Eventort Spice Quest, an dem ich Freundschaft mit der Familie Woei schloss: erst mit dem Chefkoch Patrick, dann mit seiner Schwester und Goldschmiedin Pearl und schließlich mit dem Vater Paul, der Surinams berühmtester noch lebender Künstler mit chinesischen Wurzeln ist und an einem Abend sich zu mir und meiner Gruppe für ein weiteres kleines Schwätzchen gesellte.

Vergangenen Freitag besuchten wir eine private Rettungsstation für Faultiere in Groningen, die vom deutschen Welttierschutz e.V. getragen wird und ich hatte das seltene Glück, die Wiederfreilassung von zwei grundlegend verschiedenen Faultierarten (Zweizeh und Dreizeh) miterleben zu dürfen. Sowohl die Biologin Veronica und als auch Ed der freundliche Standortverwalter zeigten sich überaus erfreut über das Interesse unserer kleinen Gruppe. Das alles hat mein Fernweh wohl in Schach gehalten. Die Begegnungen und insbesondere die Freundlichkeit der Menschen sind außergewöhnlich. Kulturell und in der Natur gibt es noch so viel zu entdecken, dass ich bereits über einen zweiten Besuch von Surinam nachdenke. Nächstes Mal würde ich mir definitiv die Besteigung des Kasikasima und einen Abstecher nach (Britisch) Guyana vornehmen.

Auch die Jodensavanne nahe Bronsberg, eine verlassene jüdische Siedlung, die erst noch vollständig ausgegraben werden muss, stünde dann auf meiner To-Do-Liste. Diese habe ich aufgrund von wiederkehrenden Schwächeanfällen ausfallen lassen. Das schmerzt sehr, da der Besuch einer meiner Hauptziele für Surinam gewesen ist. Doch das Klima belastet mich zu sehr. Seit Ankunft vor 12 Tagen habe ich mich nur im nötigen Rahmen bewegt. Die Muskeln sind merklich geschrumpft und, obgleich man in diesem Klima weniger isst, der Fettanteil gewachsen.

Aber es ruft der Dschungel und es zieht mich so dringend fort aus der Zivilisation, dass ich manchmal weinen könnte. Morgen geht es los und für sechs Tage bin ich stromaufwärts zum Sintia-Damm (Sintiadam) unterwegs, immer den Suriname River entlang bis dieser auf den Gran Rio trifft und wo die letzten bekannten saramaccischen und Maroni Flussdörfer enden. Doch das erst morgen... Der Blick von meinem Zimmerfenster im zweiten Stock auf die Stadt ist wunderbar aber bittersüß. Ich höre manchmal eine Bigband spielen und Leute jubeln, jeden Morgen und Abend knatschen und krächzen die Papageie im Baum und abends weht ein frischer Wind hinein und befreit uns vom Geruch von Rott, Müll und Rauch. Besonders dann ist der Anblick der Stadtdächer und der vielen Palmen und Bäumen dazwischen nicht zu ertragen. In den Moment frage ich mich, warum wir in der deutschen Sprache kein passenderes Wort für Sehnsucht und Fernweh haben, denn beides trifft auf meine Gefühlslage nicht zu; das eine ist zu lokal, das andere zu romantisch. Echte Sehnsuchtsorte tun weh.

Es gibt Orte, die geben dir innere Ruhe und du fühlst dich sicher und auf angenehme Weise grundstimuliert: Das ist der Nordwesten Irlands. Die späte Ankunft in Dublin im Mehrbettsaal einer netten wenn auch leicht chaotisch geführten Jugendherberge. Das Wissen, dass es Ol' Pat in seinem geweißelten irischen Häuschen mit dem Gemüsegarten nebenan gut geht. Oder einfach das Wasserbett meines Freundes, das aber erst inklusive friedlich schlafenden Freundes vollkommenes Glück bedeutet. Darüber hinaus gibt es Orte aus deinen Träumen, die du dir zurechtspinnst und die alles verkörpern, was du gern hättest oder wärst. Doch sie bleiben, selbst wenn sie deine Erwartungen auf den ersten Blick erfüllen, eine Illusion. Ein schwarzes Loch, in dessen Ereignishorizont du gefangen bist; während das ganze Universum an dir vorbeizieht, bist du wie festgefroren und kommst dem Kern deiner Sehnsucht niemals näher. Es ist unerträglich.

Ich lese einen Onlineartikel der taz zum deutschen Waldsterben und die "Realpolitik" hat mich wieder. In einer Woche verlasse ich Surinam und in zweieinhalb Wochen bin ich wieder im deutschen Novemberwetter. Bis dahin gibt mir das Land die Gelegenheit entweder endlich das Herz der Finsternis zu erreichen oder es mir einfach selbst aus der Brust zu reißen.

The precise location of the interior shown in this image remains a topic of debate among architectural historians and researchers of old San Francisco Chinatown.  

On The Balcony of the Woey Sin Low Restaurant with I.W. Taber

In her pictorial book San Francisco Chinatown (published by the Chinese Historical Society of America in 2006), historian Judy Yung asserted that photo 3003 by Isaiah West Taber depicted “The top floor of Hang Far Low Restaurant – replete with inlaid panels, carved screens, and hardwood tables and stools imported from China – was reserved for the Chinese elite and their guests.”  

Later architectural historians (including Hongyan Yang), have questioned the accuracy of Yung’s caption. Other photos of the legendary Hang Far Low’s pre-1906 dining areas omit any of the lavish furniture and other furnishings seen in photo 3003.  The floral pattern on the articulated screens appear markedly different from the bamboo pattern seen on screens of the Hang Far Low dining rooms, and none of the Hang Far Low-branded boxes normally seen on the dining table tops appear.  Moreover,  The Bancroft Library’s online entry for Taber’s photo 3003 remains silent as to the location of the photo, and tourist postcard derivatives similarly omit any mention of the restaurant for which this lavish interior was constructed.  

Based on a sequential examination of Taber's other photos of the premises in question, we can more plausibly conclude that the “Dupont Street” restaurant’s grand dining room seen in photo 3003 was, in fact, located in the Woey Sin Low (會仙樓; canto: “Wui Seen Lauh”) restaurant at 808 Dupont Street.

Apr. 18,1906.  Postcard by Charles Weidner (from the collection of Wong Yuen-Ming). The postcard derived from Weidner's photo shows the interior of the Woey Sin Low restaurant from an angle opposite to that of I.W. Taber's photo 3003 of the same dining room.  Charles Weidner (b.1867) began working as a commercial photographer in the 1890s. He first entered the postcard business in 1903 with investor William Goeggel and together, they published 111 numbered postcards as Goeggel & Weidner. In 1904, Weidner began issuing postcards under his name, including tinted halftones or Auto-Chrome, tinted collotypes, cyanotypes, and real photo postcards.  The postcard represents a small example of how San Francisco’s Chinatown was depicted during the postcard craze that peaked during 1898 – 1911 “Golden Age of Post Cards.”  (For more information, see https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/ccd1198596e84019825240bcc38c956b)

The photos which Taber took both before and after his number “3003″ of the “Grand Dining Room” as provided by the Taber Photo company, however, are instructive, as the photo was apparently taken in sequence after photo 3002 and before 3004 of Taber’s pair of “Balcony of the Chinese Restaurant” photos.

“3002 Balcony of the Chinese Restaurant, Dupont Street, San Francisco,” c. 1885.  Photograph by Isaiah West Taber (from the collection of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery).  The photo by Isaiah West Taber titled: “Balcony of the Chinese Restaurant” has entranced the viewer for more than a century and a quarter.  From the photographer’s view at one end of the balcony from an upper floor, one can look south down old Dupont Street toward the downtown area of San Francisco.  No human figure appears in the frame.  Instead, an elaborately-carved large wooden medallion is seen in the center of the balcony’s expanse.  Below the ornate centerpiece, a stone panel is set into the façade at knee-height.  Large glass and paper lanterns are suspended overhead.  Potted penzai (盆栽; canto: poon joi; Jpn: bonsai) in planters are placed just beyond the low wooden railing lead to the end where a small sign which appears to advertise 包辦酒席 or banquet arrangements (canto: “bau baan jau jik”) is suspended from a pole.  The glass of the lantern appearing closest to the viewer and in the upper center of the frame provides only a partial clue as to the name of the restaurant in the form of two Chinese ideograms.

After gaining off-hours admittance to the restaurant and onto its balcony, one can deduce that Taber took his iconic balcony photo #3002 first, changed the negative plate; swiveled his lens to point back into the sunlit, top-floor interior from which he had emerged (for #3003); and then took his next shot (#3004) looking north on Dupont St. from his perch on the east side of the street.

Thus, one can more plausibly conclude that the “Dupont Street” restaurant’s grand dining room seen in photo 3003 was, in fact, located in the Woey Sin Low (會仙樓; canto: “Wui Seen Lauh”) restaurant at 808 Dupont St.

Moreover, it appears that Taber wasn’t alone on the balcony that day when he took his photos of the ornate balcony of the Woey Sin Low restaurant; a young restaurant worker apparently stood behind him, holding a broom and providing a rare (for that era), friendly smile for the camera lens.  One can surmise that the hat on the stool in the right of the frame is Taber’s – where he had placed it before taking the iconic balcony shot.

As an eatery, Woey Sin Low at 808 Dupont Street appears to have occupied as prominent and lengthy a place in old Chinatown’s restaurant universe as Hang Far Low (one block south on the 700-block of Dupont).

Woey Sin Low would maintain Langley business directory and later Chinese Exchange telephone listings (at “China 242”) from the early 1870′s until the 1906 earthquake and fire. The Woey Sin Low restaurant which had served pioneer Chinese California for more than three decades would not survive the disaster.

Time and ages

The present takes place in 2023, the past was three years ago, in 2020. Apart from White, the boys are all the same age according to the character overview below, which makes them all 19-20 years old in the present (while White is 18 and a freshman). In the past up to ep. 8, they would have been 16-17 years old and in 11th grade (ม. 5/3 -> Matthayom 5, class 3; ม. stands for มัธยม /mat tha yohm/ = secondary school).

Potty mouth Fluke

In the present, I swear every other word out of his mouth is a swear and the subs don't always make it obvious. An example of when he's speaking calmly in ep. 3:

It's not like the others don't curse, they sure do lol, but Fluke does so even when not in a stressful situation, and it sticks out in contrast to White especially because the baby speaks so properly and politely to his phis.

Newspaper clipping (ep. 4)

* เสี่ย /siia/ = a rich guy who squanders money, a big spender in illicit businesses, mostly used for middle-aged men; it's used as a pronoun, hence why he's known as เสี่ยโจ้ /siia Joe/ and we hear his subordinates call him เสี่ย /siia/, often subbed as Boss; it's a term of Teochew origin that describes an aristocrat's son, originally ** นายบ่อนใหญ่ /naai baawn yai/ = big shot gambling den boss or the boss of a huge gambling den

The snippet on the right is another easter egg btw - 'Talking to Pond Krisda, director of "Man Suang", Thai filmmaking [...]' but I can't make out the rest in that box (the snippet above that, too, though some of it I can tell says tourists, free visa, 3 months).

Past injury?

Whoever actually leaked the clip has this pelvis x-ray saved that's labeled to be from that same year, 2563 aka 2020. The two files at the top look to be invoices.

Pronouns

When Phee goes to confront Non about the leaked clip, he's so furious that he switches from their usual เรา /rao/ (= I; informal) + calling each other by name instead of using a 2nd pers. pronoun to calling both Non and Keng มึง /meung/ (= you; impolite) and himself กู /guu/ (= I; impolite). For reference, กู/มึง /guu, meung/ are the same pronouns the entire friend group use with each other, as male friends in Thai shows often do. Non, as the new addition to the group, is the only one who uses เรา /rao/ + names, and Jin is the only who reciprocally uses these pronouns with him.
