After the war broke out, Gustave Van de Woestyne fled with his family to England. On his return in 1919, the artistic landscape in Belgium had changed. Van de Woestyne, who was one of the symbolist painters of the first Latem group before the war, did not remain insensitive to modernism and the artist gradually incorporated expressionist and post-cubic style elements into his work. Fugue from 1925 is one of his most expressionist works. The musical title refers to the polyphony of the composition. The farmer is central, surrounded by those elements that determine his life and give substance: the house, the church, the animals and nature. The shapes have been greatly simplified and reduced to large contrasting areas of color in a collage-like structure.
