Early Mid-Autumn Festival: Moon Rabbit Lantern Daoist

When I was away on my work trip, this little cutie finally arrived!

This is the last one of this series of figs, all individually sold. You can read about the other three here, here, and here. This was by far the most popular out of the bunch, and sold out instantly when it was first launched. And I do mean instantly - I was there with my finger hovered over the check out button, watching the seconds count down, and I was still too slow. I like to think my hand speed is pretty good, but fig buyers in China are really hard to beat sometimes. Luckily, this fig maker provided an overseas link upon request, and I was able to buy one for me and my friend.

The inspiration for this fig is Gong Jun's character Dong Fang Yuechu in the upcoming TV show Fox Spirit Matchmaker: Yue Hong. I couldn't find the bunny lantern inspiration for the fig in particular, but I think I finally found at least the costume:

All the costumes are so beautiful from this show - I can't wait!

This fig arrived snuggly wrapped up in his polystyrene mailing box. I really like when the figs are wrapped in plastic - it actually makes removing them from the box very easily. I still cut the box to get out the fig - can't risk breaking off delicate pieces! But the figs slide out much easier.

Here he is, looking beautiful, with his bunny lantern.

This is an extreme, extreme closeup of the lantern...it's tiny! Lots of great details for so small of an item. You can see the handle there where Yuechu will hold it.

The lantern spins fairly freely - you can see when I laid the fig down the lantern turned around.

Here he is! I absolutely love this fig. His hair is perfect, his expression is perfect - everything about him is just completely charming.

Interestingly enough, the lantern is a bit too long for his hand.

You can see here how the tassel hits the ground and causes the handle to push out of his hand. This is easily rectified by putting him on a fig stand, but it does seem like it could have used a bit of a design tweak so folks didn't have to use fig stands if they don't want to. Maybe I also got a lantern that was slightly larger than the norm - production does vary on these figs.

He has a little book in his hand...there's no writing on it or anything to determine what it might be. I'm guessing that the fan sites that sneak pics in during filming couldn't get close enough to tell.

Unlike two of the other Yuechu figs in this series, this one isn't sculpted to be in motion. He's just standing there holding his lantern, looking beautiful.

You can see his two strands of hair that are sticking up in his signature Dong Fang Yuechu hairstyle.

When I was searching for this costume, I was mostly looking at his hair style first, looking for a plain hairpin like this. He has a lot of very ornate, very stylized hair crowns that are absolutely lovely.

The outer robe of these costumes are all very full and billowy. It's a nice look with the belted inner robes

This really is my favorite fig angle! We get a really beautiful shot of the whole fig.

Here's a good look of the fig with the fig stand. You can see how the bunny lantern hangs much better.

This fig has full modeling on the underside, including pants and boots. It's a little hard to see from this angle.

Much more easily seen here!

Yuechu's signature hairstyle here...

And here. Little tiny bit of paint overspray on the hairpin, but I think it's pretty unavoidable at this level of manufacturing. I think to avoid it, they would have had to have the hair pin as separate pieces that were inserted into holes in the hair bun. Much less hassle this way.

That's all four of them now. They're wonderful. I can't wait for this show!

Seeing how badly sothis/byleth get treated by intsys makes me feel really badly for them and their fans. I thought self inserts were meant to fawn over the player but instead I see the company retcon them, replace, and low but high key shitting on them. I don’t think I would ever see this with characters like Link or Persona or the little pokemon kids so I’m not sure what intsys is trying to tell us about sothis/byleth if this what we see done to them, “they’re just a mindless beast”

As I realised thanks to talking and exchanging with people around and after years of discourse...

Fodlan suffers from "self-insert worship" but in a batman 5D chess gambit, from doylist wise, "player worship". Earl Grey must sell, thus the character who always loves the player and was made, designed, as the player's love-interest (Billy's), Supreme Leader's worship takes the cake.

As already pointed out, Fodlan games try their damnest to erase or not give any figs about Flamey, the "War" is just a background buzz and units are on snow class, and if something is to blamed for the destruction and deaths caused by the war it's deflected on the mole people, "Church/Kingdom BaD because they don't offer their heads on a platter" or the world and its systum - and the worst offender, on "crusts", aka, blood from a genocided race that mingled with "humanity" and is used as the scapegoat for everything wrong in the world. The "alien blood" is to blame and the real responsible for why Miklan tried to seduce people who didn't want to be seduced, or why classicism exist.

I exaggerate a bit, Heroes tried to poke holes at this smokescreen and it ended up with Supreme Leader running away from Lissa (the most persuasive character in the franchise?) because, hey, in her verse, no one told her 1+1 = 2, or no one she couldn't introduce to Aymr I guess.

(of course we have the lol!supports from the besf, but any opposition is resolved with a teaspoon in the following supports, there's no disagreement nothing, it's always "and John realised off-screen Supreme Leader was right and he was wrong", ultimate kuddos to the Ferdie support though, the biggest joke - but again, FE16's supports kind of suck).

With that in mind, Billy was always intended to be the SS Lord, and to opposed Supreme Leader (that's the gravitas and main steak served when you order Fodlan : "u will feel bad bcs u turn against ur precious student sad uwus").

And yet, not to prevent the irl players from, idk, buying Supreme Leader merch or routes or being engaged, even if it's through foolish fan-faction wars, Billy takes a backseat as Nopes fully embrace the core of the Fodlan games : Hresvelg Tea.

Player must feel bad for siding against Supreme Leader - so Supreme Leader must somehow be right, and make people at least some of them surface-level wonder if the ends justify the means, right?

Billy, when they are their character and not a self insert UI, thus must bow down to this rule - everything must be thrown in a blender so Supreme Leader's steak will look appetising, even if you have to destroy the tastiest risotto ever done in the process.

Rhea cannot have spotlight else we will be in a Lissa situation again - so if she has any, it'll play in the red herring already debunked 10 chapters ago "Church BaD Rhea BaD maybe she should have ruled over the world instead of letting HuMaNiTy rule itself". In Nopes? Conveniently, Uncle pops up so Rhea's goal changes, and she will prefer to save the world instead of putting the person who wants her out of Fodlan by tomorrow morning because her ears are pointy to the sword.

Dimitri? "BaD" as long as he wants to kill Supreme Leader, but when he'll become the Saviour King, he'll try to spare her and regret having to kill her - fuck to Baldo, Waldi, and the "creatures masquerading as humans" I guess - in FE16 ; in Nopes, he'll also join the "Church BaD" gang, thus isn't "really" opposing Supreme Leader, right?

Clout became a thing.

And Billy? Well, Barney's existence is their nemesis, so to prop Barney they should shit on Billy, right?

But to shit on them to this point - throwing them with the other Nabateans in Nopes in the "dgaf" trashcan but also, confirming the worst theories from FE16 (Jerry's not the best dad ever) hurts. Billy was, this time, sacrificed to make place for the new self-insert, but also, imho, to showcase how the damn space lizards are evil (and not only because we're playing an agarthan game/route, but also because it checks a certain someone's agenda).

So while I think it's less something of "the devs hate Billy" it's more like "the devs want you to buy Hresvelg Tea".

Announcement: The Four Seasons Figthusiast Blog Branches Out!

Since I'm apparently incapable of not wanting to post about cute fandom merch, I've decided that my fig blog needs...a side hustle. So while this will absolutely remain a steady daily fig blog, I've decided to periodically add a few posts about other Word of Honor / Junzhe merch (primarily dolls) that are just too cute not to share. I'll try to post an extra one every weekend, but we'll see how time and my work schedule allows!

For the inaugural post in this new series, we're going back to where it all began - the First Encounter from Episode 1 of Word of Honor.

I find these series of fan produced dolls incredibly funny and absolutely delightful! I was first introduced to this sweetly smiling Hobo-Xu by a fan that posted a video holding him out a car window and his loose hair flying madly in the wind! I burst out loud laughing and have had an irrepressibly soft spot in my heart for him ever since.

Turns out (naturally), he has a husband, but the Lao Wen that he was originally paired with ... was crying! You know I can't stand to see figs cry! Well, that goes for dolls too. So when the doll maker produced this smiling version, I obviously snapped him up right away. I love him.

I will note that these dolls came exactly this way. Lao Wen's blushies in certain strategic areas, and both of their hairstyles. I was so absolutely delighted by the idea of the doll maker lovingly putting pony tails in each doll's hair (can you imagine how long that took?!?) that I kept it exactly so.

Ahahaha! Too funny! Have I mentioned how much I love this fandom?

These are 15cm dolls, which are my favorite. I love the 20cm dolls a lot, especially because the larger size gives them more real estate for their outfits, but they become a display space issue REAL fast. And you know I need that display space for figs.

The 15cm are much more compact and all the cuter for it, I think, while still having ample space for clothing detail. The 10cm dolls are in many ways even cuter because they are tinier, but then they start running into the problem of not having enough real estate for details on their outfits. So in my mind, 15cm is totally the sweet spot for dolls.

Here's the matching outfits I bought. Oh, you can see right here what the original Lao Wen doll looked like. He's cute, just not my style, and lacks the sheer hilarity of one scrunchied ponytail off to the side!

Here's a closeup of his fashion shoot card! The outfit did not come with his hat, sadly.

The clothing got a little wrinkled on the transpacific journey. To be expected, and originally I thought a few wrinkles would be just fine on a hobo, but it ended up affecting the look and drape of the clothes, especially the sleeves. So out came the steamer.

I was not at all sure what the white little thing was - I mean, obviously it's a dickey, but I didn't recall that Hobo-Xu was wearing a white underrobe. I mean, it makes sense, everyone in the jianghu must have at least 3-4 layers on at all time for propriety's sake, but I could not recall it on Zhou Xu at all. BUT I would never put money on my memory vs. a doll mama's exhaustive research. That's a sucker bet for sure - I am guaranteed to lose! So of course, I had to re-watch episode 1.

Yep, he sure does have a white underrobe. Good thing I didn't take that bet against myself (did I also have to watch episode 2 while I was at it? I'll never tell!)

Next layer is his blue wrap robe.

It's a bit more oversized than I expected, but that's pretty true to the styling of this outfit on the show. Very figure covering. Amazing that Lao Wen could even see his butterfly bones, really.

Note I really, really need all of these costume pictures released in a book that I can buy, I love them so much!

Now the darker blue outer robe. Again, pretty drapey. It's quite large - you can see how it covers his little feet there.

His belt barely fits. You can see it hanging on to the very end of the velcro there - I had to really cinch it tight. This laobinggui hasn't missed that many meals!

Look at this cute little wooden gourd. I love it so much. All the little details on these sets are so wonderful!

Ahh he's perfect. I felt totally fine putting his scarf to the side since it was too hot to wear in the show anyway!

This doll outfit card makes me laugh! Also, I'm admiring how perfectly styled the doll outfit is here. Those are some crisp lines! Beautiful.

I've mentioned before on this blog and on my Twitter how much I love Lao Wen's gorgeous episode 1 outfit. I love it so much that I bought the costume for myself. I was not disappointed by this rendition - it's wonderful! It too came a little wrinkly, but nothing too bad. The flying-shoulder outer robe here is actually silk, which is all kinds of amazing.

This underrobe is really pretty. I really wouldn't mind dressing like this, except for how hot it all actually is.

There we go! This underrobe is actually fairly short, as in, we can see his little feet.

So pretty. Look at the shoulders! The bamboo print. So beautiful!

Can you believe his fan is metal!?! So nice. The official Rua figs only had a fabric and/or plastic fan. This is so much better.

I tried putting his fan around his little sunshiney paw there, but it ended up being hidden by his sleeve.

Unlike A-Xu, poor Lao Wen has been skipping some meals there in Ghost Valley...his belt snugs up just fine. A-Xu, your wallet please, let's feed this man up!

Ta da! One perfect little philanthropist, coming right up!

Here they are, looking ridiculously cute! I wish Lao Wen's outfit was a bit longer so it covered up his feet, but that just means I need to put 15cm "ancient shoes" on my purchase to-do list.

And here they are on doll stands (and yep, that's 30 images right there). I do actually have my Word of Honor dolls fully/permanently dressed and on stands (unlike my Junzhe dolls with their different outfits), so this is how they are on my display shelves. Until I need to relocate them for fig expansion space, that is!

Well, what do you think? Like the doll posts? I had a blast, that was so much fun. A nice complement to my daily figs, I have to say. I'm already excited to post on the next set of dolls, so I guess this special series is going to stick around a while!
