Phoenix - Alpha Zulu
I’m always surprised when I see certain albums or bands show up in the new release sections on Apple Music when I check every week, just to see what’s new and what just came out, because I don’t follow a lot of bands’ careers anymore, minus a few, but I don’t know what’s coming out any given week. There might be a couple of albums I know are coming out, but for the most part, I’m totally surprised to see what’s new. That’s why I was really surprised to see a new album from French indie-pop band Phoenix. I haven’t listened to these guys since 2013 when their follow-up to 2009′s Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix came out. You know, the album with “Lasso” and “1901,” which is one of the biggest songs ever. I love that song, as do many other people, but I was shocked to see they had a new album coming out, entitled Alpha Zulu. I guess they’ve been toiling away for the last few years, as the pandemic raged, wanting to write and record an album that could get people moving and dancing once the world opened back up. For a band that’s been around for 20 years at this point, it’s interesting to see them still going, let alone still having some creativity up their sleeves. A lot of bands reach a certain point when they run out of ideas, but if one thing’s true with this LP, they haven’t done that yet. Alpha Zulu is an amalgamation of every sound and idea that they’ve had within their music, and this is their first album in five years. I never listened to their last one, but I heard it wasn’t great. Not that it was bad, but it was just boring. This record, however, is not boring at all, and right from the opening notes of the title track, it’s a catchy, and fun, and silky smooth disco-pop album.
That’s what the rest of the 35-minute album is -- a catchy, fun, and slick disco-pop album with hooks for days. A few songs slow things down, such as “Winter Solstice,” which has a title that makes sense, but the album is full of life and energy. It’s refreshing to hear after the last couple of years, especially with songs like “Tonight,” “After Midnight,” “Artefact,” and my personal favorite song, “All Eyes On Me.” That’s got one of my favorite hooks throughout the year. That song is so much fun. I constantly play it. The record itself is great, though. I love their vocalist a lot, as his voice is still smooth and catchy as all hell, but their hooks are strong, the lyrics are weird but enjoyable, and the record just feels refreshing. It’s still nothing super unique, but there’s a lot of variety here, as it takes something from each of their records and puts it into a blender, so it never gets boring. Not two songs sound alike on this record, and that’s awesome for me, because I love albums that constantly switch things up and never get boring. This album doesn’t do that whatsoever, but I love this record. If you want a catchy, fun, and enjoyable disco-pop record that has some of the best hooks you’ll hear all of 2022, I’d recommend this. If you’re just curious to hear about what Phoenix is up to thirteen years after their original popularity, you might surprisingly enjoy this. I checked out this out merely out of curiosity, and I was genuinely surprised with how much I enjoyed this. This is, simply put, one of my favorite albums of the year, and if someone told me at the beginning of the year that a new Phoenix album would be one of my top albums of 2022, I wouldn’t believe you, but here we are.
Last Thursday on my way to work, I listened to wolfgang amadeus phoenix (Phoenix, 2009) from start to finish. It's such a perfect record. I have a lot of fondness for bankrupt! because it'd just been released when I fell in love with Phoenix. But I must admit Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix is pretty incredible, nothing but bangers.
And of course it has what's probably my favourite Phoenix song : Rome. I love it so much that I listen to it in small doses, as if I'm afraid it'll make me feel too much. With Rome in my hears I'm feel like I'm 14 again, but also like I've lived through centuries of sadness.
ive determined that the ideal study music is albums that are mid at best overall but have a few good tracks on them, on repeat
that way you can trick your brain into wanting to study every time you listen to that album, but you're not ruining any music you actually listen to because the album was mid anyway and you never listened to it

an update headcanon from the og post:
polly’s new to the orchestra!! very emotional, expressive but straightforward playing. he can be too loud sometimes (sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t). there is a certain naivety to his playing during aa4-1 plot. was a student under kristoph (learning performance). wanted to learn some soloist tips from phoenix but then shit went down (aa4-1).
his go-tos:
either of these gershwin pieces is apollo’s favourite to play bc he gets be loud (rhapsody in blue is his favourite to play in a symphony (he likes to warm up with that solo clarinet opening) and the 1st prelude is his go to chamber piece). but also i chose gershwin bc it’s more jazz heavy than classical and it’s similar to the actual aa4 music (which is more jazz/blues than the trilogy music). additionally, gershwin was actually denied studying under many famous people like ravel and nadia boulanger bc he already had such a distinct style (ravel even said that he would just make gershwin into a bad ravel if he were to teach him). i think it’s kinda similar to apollo who, unlike phoenix in aa1, has a distinct personality right from his debut (game mechanics wise) and phoenix basically did not mentor apollo at all and instead used him for his own gains
interestingly, i chose a mozart piece for apollo bc mozart is fairly straightforward, simple yet has that element of improvisation. which i think matches apollo’s tendencies in court: wanting everything to be straightforward but he can improvise his way through tricky situations like the end of aa4-4 to convict kristoph (with the help of phoenix, or lack there of). but this movement is actually slow and almost has that emotional aspect? which i think apollo likes that. (also hinting that connection with lamiroir (i think she would be an opera singer here) and clarinet being the closest thing to the human voice)
i actually kinda also associate him with tchaikovsky, very passionate, very emotional (apollo cares a lot!!). but since tchaik didn’t write much for solo clarinet, i put his violin concerto here since it has a clarinet (and oboe but mostly clarinet) opening in the 2nd movement
didn't poast last week so this is a two-week extravaganza post!
con: got roped into DMing dnd
pro: none of these fools have read mdzs so i can steal plots from there. hope the party is ready to be lead on a quest by a disembodied arm!
listening: oh shit SO many things. i will not be linking to all of them.
depeche mode: basically just their top songs on spotify, not any specific album. strong shoutout to 'shake the disease' and 'wrong' (which featured in my secret samol post!)
disturbed: ditto

shosty symphony no 5 (<3)
and, finally, a lot of borodin symphony no. 1 in e flat and the last two movements of rimsky-korsakov golden cockerel because that's what the youth orchestra i'm volunteering with is playing right now haha
for podcasts, i've listened to the new counter/weight prequel eps! i'm so charmed to see these characters again. i still haven't finished millenium break holiday special because i lost my spot when a bunch of an episode played without sound by accident so i finally went and scrubbed back to the beginning of the episode (it's the second to last part) so by next week i will FINALLY be out of holiday special zone.

my friend @celestialtourguide sent me a dm to ask about a few of the characters in this manuscript and i was immediately charmed by it. it's so pretty, i loved the informational blurbs, just really cool stuff. it was already on waybackmachine but i've gone ahead and updated it.
watching:
kurtis conner looksmaxxing. weird little subculture peek.
rewatched sideways' why the music in cats 2019 is worse than you thought because my roommate was interested. this led us to the same channel's why avatar has the most ironic soundtrack of all time because roommate misread ironic as iconic and she really likes that movie. no accounting for taste, but aight. much more interesting than i thought it would be. that video then lead us to tony hinnigan's woodwind demos because hell fuckin yes. big-ass panpipes.
i've been keeping up on dunmeshi anime in little watch sessions with my SO, and also am working through kill la kill with him! i've seen it before but he has not so i'm really enjoying that.

fallow.

i managed to finish my secret samol gift in time for reveal day!!! comics are fuckin hard dude!!!! i don't know if i'll be doing it again but it was a fun challenge. i decided to use a New App for some reason instead of procreate because procreate has not been hitting right and i wanted comic half tone brushes for this project. app is called sketchbook, it's an orange icon with a pencil on it. shrug! it's fine! i'll probably keep using it for a bit.
started working on an english paper piecing project! soliciting tips for that because right now my method is: cut out hexagon using pattern piece i made to be 1/4 in larger all around than the template, gluestick template onto hexagon, baste edges down neatly, whip-stitch right sides together. remove template once all six sides have something attached. i'm sure there's a better way to streamline this process, i'll have to experiment. this will end up as a dice bag i think.
finally, pottery starts again this week! so next week will have some of that in here
eating:
ah beans i did not do a good job keeping track of this. uh. made the ground pork & cabbage thing again because my roommate got SO much napa cabbage for making kimchi and we had a shitload left over. napa cabbage isn't as good as a more standard cabbage for this imo, standard cabbage tends to be a little sweeter i think once it's cooked in? idk. had some stage 5 mental illness moments last week trying to cook dinner on a very short time scale with lots of other shit to do, following a recipe because fucking of course my roommate wanted me to cook with a recipe that night. anyways.
misc:
like said at the top, somehow i managed to sign up for Another Activity god damn it. so now every saturday evening i run dnd. tl;dr i'm in a group irl that meets biweekly, someone who i give a lift to for that was complaining in the car that their other online group's dm ragequit after his encounter wasn't well-balanced (skill issue) and before thinking about it i just was like oh well i could probably step in if you need! god damn ittttt lol
i have missed dming so it should be fun. i vibe checked them for a session 0 last week and they seem chill and honestly shouldn't be too much work on my end, especially if i yoink plots from mdzs ha ha ha. other than that, all is basically well. i've settled back into a schedule, applied for some summer positions (!), and absolutely hate the amount of busy work in one of my two classes. yippee
