“You’re good at running. Or you do it too much.”

The ceiling offers no absolution from the words said by the man near Remus’ bed. He keeps asking.

“I don’t want to run from you.”

‘But you did’, Sirius could say next. He ought to. 

“I know.”

Sirius kneels, reaches out to lightly caress Remus’ face. Remus tries his best not to flinch, to stay still, like someone who is used to this, unafraid.

Like a lover would.

He knows he’s like glass to Sirius when he sighs and lays next to him, pillow pulling with his weight. 

“Stay with me. Just for a while. As long as you can bear it.”

It’s not a question, not a demand. It’s a plea, of sorts, spoken through lips that have formed similar words too many times before. Tired, heavy, hopeful words.

“I will. I promise.”

Sirius slides his hand under Remus’ as if he’s afraid to crush him under his weight. Remus stays still, afraid his sharp edges will cut the warm man beside him.

But he stays still.

“But…” James groaned in frustration. Why wasn’t Lily listening? “Okay, hear me out,” he said. “We’re gonna do a Secret Santa event no matter what, right?”

“Yeah, but-”

James didn’t let her finish: “So will it really be so bad to make them each other’s Secret Santas and just… see how things go?”
