I love how Astarion quotes The Tell-Tale Heart every once in a while. It's a rarer line, and initially I thought it was out of place (Neil is very well versed in theater, so I assumed it was a riff from him), but since reading an analysis of the work I think it was pretty purposeful.

The piece is all about fear and paranoia, things we know Astarion is plagued by despite how he might act. Similarly, the narrator of the story also tries to convince the reader that they are not as troubled as they seem. In the end, the narrator is consumed by the beating of the heart of the old man he killed and dismembered, the sound growing louder and louder until in a fit of rage he reveals the body to the police to absolve himself from the persistent beating.

Except the police never heard the heart beat, because it wasn't the old man's heart at all. The narrator was consumed by the sound of his own heart beating more and more rapidly in his chest from fear. He was the owner of the thing that forced him to reveal his true nature, he is the owner of the tell-tale heart.

And what happens with Astarion after you romance him? He realizes over time that, while he tried to deny his feelings and was initially only interested in manipulating you for his own means, he actually has grown to care for you. You have done something to his heart that hasn't happened in centuries, you have made it feel as if it has started beating again.

Therefore, his tell-tale heart leads him to admit his transgressions, which were committed out of fear and paranoia for his safety.

So the line is actually very, very apt. His confession during Act 2 is his own version of "Villains! Dissemble no more! I admit the deed! Tear up the planks! Here, here! It is the beating of his hideous heart!" Except, of course, it is his own heart that he is unearthing for us (and it's not so hideous, after all).

This took a stupid long time to work on, but it kept me motivated when my brain was broken from finals and when my heart was broken by the latest Thicker Than updates 💔

I may or may not have been saving various posts on the basis "Francis would absolutely send this to Nathan" for the past while. No comment.

Dropout TV and Cryptocurrency

In tuesday's episode of Dirty Laundry, Ally Beardsley mentioned using cryptocurrency. Not only that, but they attributed their use of it to starting testosterone. As someone both aware of how cryptocurrency completely fucks over the environment and who will be (fingers crossed) starting testosterone soon, I'm feeling very split about consuming content they help create, including dimension 20. For the time being I'm going to stop watching dropout tv shows, and I don't intend to consume, produce, or spread any dimension 20/dropout tv content. I am also considering canceling my subscription to the service.

Part of my knows I'm overreacting, and my hurt is in no small part due to how much unearned trust I put into them. That's on me. The other part of me is disgusted with the normalization of crypto use, and I want to do at least the bare minimum of showing there are still folks out there who are against it.

Maybe in a day or two I'll realize I'm being silly and will take this down. Or maybe I won't be coming back. I don't know.

I love how you changed Lionpaw's mentor in Daniel in the Den! Is there any other mentors you would change?

The first and second arc I think mentors were fine but actually I would've swapped the mentors for the Three around a bit.

Lionpaw obviously to Stormfur.

I think Brightheart wasn't a good choice for Jaypaw. For a number of reasons, and first off all I think it was a huge blow to both of them to get each other. Like I understand the logic but I think Brackenfur would've been a better choice for Jayfeather. I think he had the patience to put up with a lot of Jaypaw's snark, and he'd wanted Snowkit as an apprentice. I think it would've been a good callback.

With Brackenfur now unavailable for Hollypaw, I'd make Sorreltail her mentor. She'd mellowed by this point but she was still very spontaneous and I think Hollyleaf would've benefited from that. Plus, were the Erins not deathly allergic to letting relationships last past an arc, Sorreltail might've clued in on her best friend Leafpool looking a lot like her apprentice.

If Stormfur was not an option, I'd give Lionpaw to Brightheart. She invented an entire new way of fighting? He'd have thrived under her. He was always great with his brother too, I think he'd do great as Brightheart's first apprentice. [And if we need to foreshadow that Ashfur's mentally unstable about Squirrelflight, let Brightheart get hurt during Dark River for a bit, during which Ashfur is made Lionpaw's mentor. The contrast would be good.]

The next set I'd change is Ivypaw and Dovepaw but I don't wanna spoil things for Daniel in the Den :3c

And from there I haven't really read the series beyond summaries so I can't really say but the three I think could've been shuffled a bit.

Woo! Finals finished up so I finally got to draw again :] Here's my boy Denton "Dent" Hawke, do not be fooled by his battle-ready expression he is a wet rag of a man who usually gets his ass kicked. He is a huge supporter of mage rights but even more so mage wrongs.

Fun fact! The quote here is from the codex entry "Blood Magic: The Forbidden School". Because he's a blood mage. If you couldn't tell.
