On February 1, 1960, four African American college students sat down at the lunch counter at Woolworth’s Department Store in downtown Greensboro and asked to be served.  They were refused, launching a sit-in movement that would spread throughout North Carolina and the South.

The four students, Ezell Blair, Jr. (later known as Jibreel Khazan), Franklin E. McCain, Joseph A. McNeil and David L. Richmond, were all freshmen from nearby North Carolina A&T State University.
Sit-ins by college students during the next several months forced the integration of businesses in the region.  Local media attention led to national coverage.  The protest spurred similar efforts across the country, sparking a national call to battle by civil rights activists who endorsed the nonviolent form of protest to demonstrate society’s inequities for blacks.
In April 1960, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), an outgrowth of the sit-in movement, organized at Shaw University in Raleigh.  The sit-ins and demonstrations throughout the South, slowly led to changes in local attitudes.
Nationally, these and other protests ultimately led to the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, both of which assured the legal rights of blacks.

Where exactly do you live if I'm allowed to ask, because here in Germany and in the most European countries we actually do celebrate Halloween and have lots of decorations for it
In Finland. We already have Easter when kids dress up into costumes (mostly witches) and go to collect candy from door to door, so there’s no slot for Halloween. We have some things, but like one tiny table or a shelf in a big supermarket with the lowest of quality items. No one cares. (We also have 1st of May as costume party when you can dress up into anything!)
I’m in Berlin right now and I have seen some Halloween decorations in Woolworth, Tedi and TK Maxx, but not anything serious or big like with Christmas. Heck, there are more autumn themed decorations (for October fest or some other autumn celebration?) than Halloween stuff! TK Maxx had the best selection, mostly just big statues and kitchen towels in one shelf. Wollworth had gigantic dolls and stuff for children in one shelf.
Personally I wouldn’t call it a Halloween celebration if not the whole nation is into it and you find easily themed decorations from anywhere, like with Christmas.
Perhaps the tradition becomes stronger in some European countries as years/decades/centuries go by. I suspect it  might take very long in Finland, as we have the Easter and the Halloween time is All Saints Day, which is holy, quiet , sacred and gloomy - and definitely not suitable for having fun with death :’D

Hey! Let's change Australia Day!
Hey! Let’s change Australia Day!
You can set your watch to it. It’s not rating season for the tele, Parliament isn’t sitting and it’s just that bit too early to be outraged that Coles and Wollworths are selling hot cross buns. So what does ‘the media’ predictably turn it’s mind to just after the new years day hangover? That’s right – changing the date of Australia Day. For the  uninitiated, Australia Day is the commemoration of…

Find your perfect fit
WOOLWORTHS WANTS TO SEE HOW CUSTOMERS MEASURE UP!
Find your perfect fit
In another first for South African retail, Woolworths is inviting South Africans – women and men – to become part of a national sizing survey.  Themed ‘find your perfect fit’, the aim of this survey is to ensure that our clothing sizing standards still meet the needs of our customers.
Thateng Shimange, Head of Womenswear at Woolworths, says, “South Africa has one of the most diverse populations in the world.  The best way for us to determine the best fit for our clothing is to actually measure real people.  No survey like this has ever been done before for the South African population, and for us it’s another way we can ‘listen’ to our customers and adapt to meet their needs.
“We will be using the same state-of-the-art body scanner used by top global brands like Levi, Marks & Spencer and Target.”
Woolworths is partnering with Alvanon, who is an international market leader in body scanning and fit form development.
No personal information - other than gender, age and ethnic group will be collected - so participants are ensured of anonymity.  Participants spend about 15 seconds (fully clothed) in the scanning booth, and afterwards are presented with a printout giving them information about their recommended Woolworths clothing sizes.
Thateng continues, “Using the data from the survey, we will be reviewing our fits and sizing across Womenswear and Menswear and will be assisting our suppliers in updating our pattern blocks and fit forms, where required.”
U.S.A.-based Alvanon is looking forward to its first foray into Africa.  Says Alvanon’s President, Ed Gribbin, “We have carried out similar surveys in 21 countries to date and are very excited to be partnering Woolworths in this initiative.”
The scanning system will be set up in three regional shopping centers during February & March 2014.  Scanning will take place at Gateway in KwaZulu-Natal from February 19th to February 23rd, at Sandton City in Gauteng from February 26th to March 2nd, and at Canal Walk in the Western Cape from March 5th to March 9th.
“We invite all South Africans to visit these shopping centers and take part in this very exciting survey,” says Thateng Shimange.
“The more people that participate, the more data we’ll collect to satisfy our customers’ future needs.”
