growing up being told that you’re lesser than simply because of the shade of your skin by virtually everyone. everywhere you look affirms it. seeing women like you be the butt of jokes and often straight up abused in tv & film but never the love interest since you could remember. having all of that bore into you through relatives’ subtle (or not so subtle) jabs and “friends” actions and words, through their complicity, and knowing they’ll never know or even think twice about the harm being done to you. how deeply it nestles into you with all of its thorns. becoming a teen and wishing you looked different. being afraid of playing in the fucking sun because you can’t bear to get any more “unattractive”. watching folks pair off and the rare times when anyone even brings you up as an option you see a disgusted response - black, white, brown… anyone. doesn’t matter. same response. because to all of them you’re not worthy. they’ve been taught and they bought in and now you suffer for it. you wish you didn’t have a want to be desired you wish you could be deprogrammed from wanting this common human experience. your friends pour on that you’re “amazing” and “wonderful” and you know they mean well but it feels like nails on a chalkboard every time but the chalkboard is your skin. grating, painful, wholly empty platitudes. they’ve never had to go through this and they’ll never have to and you just wish they’d shut the fuck up. the active reprogramming every single day once you realize you can pull yourself out as an adult. how tiring that is. how the residue shows up in new ways when you feel ok. discovering through this work that you can get better and learn to love yourself so so much, but the damage is too deep to ever fully reverse. knowing you’re well-armored but people will continue to cause damage because you cannot fully heal. how your heart drops. feeling so deeply hurt and angered by a world that would do this to a child, but you keep trying because you have to. you have to. you have to.

honestly can’t believe i finally put this song out even in this unserious form. it barely scratches the surface and i know there’s more within me dying to be screamed about in this vein and that’ll come in time. there’s no way i can hold that in. but on that night a couple years ago i just wanted to make something and this semi-silly thing is what happened.

to any of my darkskinned girls out there who’ve felt like this or are feeling like this: i’m so sorry for what they’ve done to you and what they unfortunately will continue to try to do. things are better than when i was a kid but not much. but you are so deserving of desire and tenderness and honestly fuck those assholes fr.
