One of my favorite things of GoW 4 and 5 is tattoos.
GoW is one of the few games in which almost all characters have tattoos, BIG ones and in very visible places. The fact that the good guys (specially Atreus and Kratos being the protagonists) get to have badass looking tattoos is a huge step for destroying the stereotype of “tattoos = delinquent/bad”.
In most games the only characters having tattoos are usually the bad guys o simply just men.
But specially in GoW Ragnarök we get to see women having huge badass tatts (even facial ones on Angrboda). I absolutely love this. I’m a woman with several big tattoos (as you know I’ve Atreus neck runes tattoed) and I get a lot of comments saying “tattoos make women less feminine”. Seeing Sif being buffed, tattooed AND being so damn pretty and feminine proved that wrong! I just love it.
It was about damn time to normalize women being covered in tattoos and still being super feminine and cute!

(Ps: Thrud isn’t very feminine tbh but I dont care! She’s rocking those sleeves tatts I love her)

Okay, I’m gonna go on a rant.
Men generally think that “Male vs Female Gaze” is like, a joke or something. That it’s “Not That Deep” or “Not Everything is Sexist!” But as someone who’s AFAB and mostly fem-presenting, I KNOW when something was designed by a woman. ESPECIALLY when it comes to AFAB, fem, and women characters.
Let’s take a look at Wonder Woman’s costume designs over the years. At first, it was just a glorified bathing suit. Hardly any coverage other than on the torso. Then, she starts getting SOME protection as society progresses. Still, it’s just a glorified bathing suit. THEN. THEN. We get the latest Wonder Woman movie franchise. Notably, her armor and civilian costumes were created BY A WOMAN. Her armor? Based on Roman armor and it SHOWS. She wears greaves, more armor, and over all it’s very protective! Very different than the provocative armor we’re used to seeing her in.
Still don’t believe me? Let’s take a look at video game characters that are fem-presenting and their costumes when designed by AMAB and AFAB people.
Take a look at Lara Croft’s first canon design in the Tomb Raider franchise:
Tumblr media
Unrealistically large breasts, impossibly small waist, skimpy clothes, and otherwise impractical costuming. She’s raiding tombs, not going to the club!
Here’s another version of Lara, this time, made by a woman for one of the XBox 360 versions of Tomb Raider:
Tumblr media
Sure, she’s still an idealized woman, sure, but she’s WAY more realistic than the first design.
Here’s a full-body promotional image.
Tumblr media
Still skimpy, but it’s getting better! She has breasts proportionate to her body size, a closer-to-average figure, and, even better, an impression of muscles!!! Not a lot of muscle, but this isn’t a body builder or an Amazonian, this is a random ass tomb raider.
Here is two of her designs from Shadow of the Tomb Raider:
Tumblr media
Now, I prefer the second design, as it gives her more coverage; the coverage is beneficial as a tomb Raider, as she might come into contact with things designed to pierce through unprotected skin, and adding protective clothing over it (her skin) minimizes pesky injuries. This is especially useful since her trips can take her days or weeks at a time. Wounds, no matter how “bad”, that get left untreated for long periods of time in unsanitary conditions usually get infected. This is bad for our Tomb Raider, because she needs to be able to get away or fight at a moment’s notice; if her wound gets infected, it severally limits her capabilities.
tl;dr: I hate how video games and other media sexualizes women through costuming and overall design choices, but it’s getting better with the rise of female character designers!

Just learned that my favorite game series, 'King's Quest', was written by a woman, Roberta Williams, who actually founded Sierra Entertainment with her programmer husband, Ken.
Cool learning what pioneers they were in narrative video games. Roberta loved the fantasy genre, and as a child, used to tell stories to entertain her epileptic brother. After her husband sat her at the computer to play her first text based game called 'Colossal Cave', Roberta was hooked. In 1980, she and Ken then went on to create their first graphical text-based game, 'Mystery House' (which looks like it was drawn in MS Paint). 'Wizard and the Princess' came next, and four years later, 'King's Quest' was born: the first mainstream animated adventure game.
Sierra made 'Frogger' too!! My favorite arcade game at the animatronic kid's Birthday funhouse, Bullwinkles. And apparently also worked with Jim Henson to adapt 'The Dark Crystal' into a video game.
Roberta came out of retirement to create a remake of 'Colossal Cave', which I only just discovered, and it will be released in nine days!!!
I just finished King's Quest VI today, so I'm geeking out. Playing these games on my old Amiga back in the 90s - and my computer-savvy IT Father who set us up with them - is the reason I went into the computer industry. Heartwarming to read all the comments on Roberta and Ken's YouTube interviews and 2014 'Industry Icon' Game Award acceptance video who were just as captivated and who went on to create video games themselves.

The one conservative talking point I’ll concede is when they say that boys who play as girls in video games turn out to be trans, you’re right my guy can’t even argue against that one lmfao for my entire life if a game lets me play as a girl I do so 95% of the time

"Women in Games has revealed a manifesto calling for equality and equity in the games industry.
The organization's Women in Games Manifesto is a fourteen-point declaration promoting the end of gendered discrimination.
Within the announcement, the advocacy group said it was inspired by the UK women's suffragist movement, which also published a proclamation on why it should be supported.
The reasons included in the Women in Games Manifesto are listed below:
Because equal pay for all means equal pay for women.
Because women's life experiences and professional expertise are wildly diverse, bringing more innovative ideas, developing better games, and a richer, more vibrant creative culture for everyone.
Because in order to achieve fairness, the tangible barriers that prevent women from entering the games industry must be removed.
Because embracing gender equality and diversity in games and the games industry will bring about a sustainable future."

Limbo style atmospheric puzzle-platformer about a little red-haired girl where the obligatory surreal brainfuck powerup sequence that changes up the puzzle formula in the final act gives you an air dash.
