World-renowned Writers and Cliffside Cows
Hi everyone! I’m back after another exhilarating week in Ireland. Monday was my 19th birthday so some of my friends surprised me with a chocolate cake from Tesco. The cake was surprisingly good considering it was from a supermarket. The next day we went on a quick little field trip to the National Library of Ireland. Wednesday and Friday were spent at the basketball court after classes as per usual. Saturday consisted of a day trip to the Cliffs of Moher and Galway followed by a long train ride home and some drinks in Dublin. Today we are just going to order pizza, stay in, and play some card games since the buses are running on a weird schedule because of a marathon going on today.
National Library of Ireland
After our Modern Irish History lecture on Tuesday, we were able to visit the National Library of Ireland. At the museum, we explored two main exhibits featuring two Irishmen that won the Nobel Prize in Literature. The first exhibit that we walked through featured Seamus Heaney. We learned that Seamus Heaney came from a predominantly farming family and was one of the first people in his family to pursue a career in poetry. Before reaching the second exhibit, we were shown an insane Lego replica of the library that took around five years to be completed.

The second exhibit featured W. B. Yeats who heavily influenced Seamus Heaney’s works. In this exhibit, we learned quite a few interesting facts about the Yeats family. First of all, we learned that W. B. Yeats proposed to a woman named Maud Gonne a total of five times and was rejected every time. After all of these rejections, he decided to propose to Maud Gonne’s daughter, Isuelt Gonne, who also rejected him. In addition to this, we learned that W. B. Yeats used to create visionary experiences with Tattwa cards. These cards along with a carved piece of lapis lazuli that was gifted to Yeats were some of the items on display at the exhibit. The piece of carved lapis lazuli was the topic of one of Yeats’ more famous poems.

The Cliffs of Moher
My Saturday morning began at 6am in order to not be late for the bus. The bus took us from Dublin all the way to Galway on the western coast of Ireland. Our first stop was at the Barack Obama plaza. The plaza was named after Barack Obama after he visited Ireland in 2011.
Cutout of Barack and Michelle at the Barack Obama plaza
Our next stop after the plaza was at the Cliffs of Moher. The views from the cliffs were surreal. During our visit, we met a pigeon that let us get astonishingly close to it and snap a ton of photos.
The super cool pigeon we met at the Cliffs of Moher
The pigeon wasn’t the only cool animal we met at the cliffs. As soon as we arrived, we spotted cows roaming the emerald green pastures all around us. When we were walking on one of the trails, we were actually able to get within arms reach of one of the cows.
Cute cow that we met on the trail (it may or may not have peed a little bit while we were there)
On the main trail through the cliffs, there was a historic tower that we were able to climb to the top off.
View from the tower at the Cliffs of Moher.
After walking around the cliffs for a few hours, I worked up quite an appetite so I decided to stop for a quick snack on the trail.
Me snacking on a stack of rocks at the cliffs (a little too crunchy for my liking to be honest)
After experiencing the cliffs, we ate actual food at McGann’s Pub in Doolin. We were seated outside in a beautiful garden-like area next to a lovely little creek. Most of the people around me ordered the fish and chips meal and we all highly recommend it, but a few other people said the beef stew was also amazing.
Galway
After eating lunch, we ventured off to Galway on the western coast of Ireland. While we were in Galway we ate dinner at The King’s Head Bistro. Three of my friends and I ordered the Kings Head Blood Red Ale. We all agreed that it was probably the worst tasting drink that we’d ever had. Only one of us was able to finish our ale by the time we left. The fish and chips that I had was extremely good though so it kind of made up for the disgusting ale.
Couldn’t pass up taking a pic with this random sign in Galway since I still have braces
Saturday Night
Instead of taking the bus back to Dublin, we decided to stay in Galway and take a train back to Dublin a few hours later. We all bought our train tickets the day before so we wouldn’t have to stress about getting them when we got to the train station, but this somehow came back to bite us. As soon as we got in line to board the train we realized the train only had carts A, B, C, and D. However the seats listed on our tickets were in cart E. Cart E was nonexistent. One of the workers on the train basically just said good luck when we asked him what we should do. In the end, most of us had to either stand or sit in the hallway between carts until some actual seats opened up after a few stops. Once we found seats, we played BS and spoons with a deck of cards we had for the rest of the two and a half hour train ride across Ireland. After arriving in Dublin a little after 10pm, we strolled down to the Silver Penny Pub for a few drinks to end off the night.
Hope you all enjoyed reading my blog this week. Until next time!

今天介绍一本最早的英文中餐菜谱——《中国食谱 - How to cook and eat in Chinses》,一本风靡美国70年的中国菜谱!
先来说说这本神奇的菜谱——《中国食谱 - How to cook and eat in Chinses》,作者杨步伟。
《中国食谱 - How to cook and eat in Chinses》,作者杨步伟。
学习的方式就是 with an open mind and an open mouth (敢想敢吃敢问)。

《How to cook and eat in Chinese》

Corner Beef Noodle House, 3948 Peck Rd., El Monte, CA 91732
This newish humble Taiwanese restaurant makes some of the best beef noodle soup in the 626/SGV. The owner(s) clearly have a passion for beef noodle soup. The menu includes cold dishes, rice dishes (popcorn chicken, pork chop, minced pork), beef noodle soup, dry noodles, won tons, desserts and drinks.
* Half meat/half tendon beef stew noodle soup ($9.75): The bowl was huge. The broth was dark but it wasn’t salty. It had deep flavor – beef and spices – it’s slightly sweet and tastes like its been boiled for hours. Yum. There were three big, thick slices of beef (a little chewy but still tender) and three big pieces of tendon (melt in your mouth tendon deliciousness), bok choy, thick chewy noodles (not hand pulled but they seemed to be fresh noodles), scallions and a side of chopped mustard greens. Everything was so good – especially the stock and tendon. Drool. All the beef noodle soups are spicy (but not very spicy).
The décor is simple. The service was polite but slow to bring the bill. They don’t offer tea but they do have water. There are some refrigerators in the dining area filled with to go items, like beef stew broth, drinks and cold appetizers. The beef stew broth that you can buy has big pieces of beef in it.
I think the noodle soup has a lot of MSG though.
Cash only.

The Definitive Top Ten Albums of 2020: #5 - #1
5. Tame Impala - The Slow Rush
At this point Tame Impala are a tale of two bands, the upstart Australian indie band that hewed closely to a blueprint of updated 60s psych rock on their first two LPs, and then the far more pop oriented outfit they morphed into on 2015′s Currents. The seismic shift to more synthetic production paradoxically won them a much larger audience, while at the same time alienating many previous fans. While it seemed that some wanted sole songwriter Kevin Parker to keep making the same album over and over, the new direction highlighted his gift for earworm hooks and shimmering and detailed production. On The Slow Rush, Parker moves even further into the pop realm and adds disco flourishes like hand drums and mainstays of electronic production like squelchy acid basslines. Had 2020 panned out like a normal year, I have no doubt that their first headlining arena tour of the US would have proven fertile ground to expand on these songs and translated to a new level of appreciation after seeing them performed live. Even without that boost, The Slow Rush cements Parkers’ status as one of the top songwriters and producers of his generation.
4. Mac Miller - Circles
It’s tragic when any young artist dies, but especially so when they just seemed to be fully living up to their full artistic potential with new breakthroughs right around the corner. Such is the case with Mac Miller, who started out as a goofy teen pop rapper, transitioned to more jazzy underground rhymes and finally began to emerge as a neo-soul singer songwriter. On the posthumously released Circles, rapping only surfaces a couple times, instead Miller’s gravelly and wary beyond his years singing takes the center stage. To be fair, it was clear he had been moving in this direction on his last couple albums, but on Circles he displays a whole new level of maturity and willingness to completely embrace a move beyond hip hop to something more original and emotionally honest. The production by Jon Brion is both nuanced and inviting with a warmth and relaxed feeling that compliments Miller’s confessional lyrics. When Miller sings of his exhaustion with the pressures of fame and its trappings it can be a tough listen, and it’s more than a little sad to ponder just where he was headed next with his music. But even in its most depleted moments Circles remains appreciative, so here’s to enjoying the music Miller gave us while he was here.
3. Run the Jewels - RTJ4
By now the formula for Run the Jewels is well established; banging production from El-P, relentless verbal assaults from Killer Mike, some lesser but passable verses from El-P and a few well placed guests. But here’s the rub, it’s a sure thing every time, with each of their four albums putting on a clinic in state of the art 21st Century hip hop. But RTJ4 does beef things up a bit in the lyrics department, with a little more pointed sociopolitical commentary than before, like on the epic album closing “A Few Words for the Firing Squad”, where the duo meditate on crime, racism and income disparity. Elsewhere Greg Nice and DJ Premier come aboard for the old school boom bap of “Ooh LA LA” which was a standout teaser track and instant classic. RTJ4 is essentially an extended musical case of “it it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” and given their track record I see no reason that El-P and Killer Mike can’t keep kicking down these gems into their golden years.
2. Gorillaz - Song Machine, Season One: Strange Timez
In yet another head scratcher, Damon Albarn’s Gorillaz released their best album since 2010′s Plastic Beach and the world basically shrugged, with this collection of songs not registering on most year-end lists. But make no mistake, if you are a fan of the Gorillaz star studded brand of kaleidoscopic pop madness, the first installment of the Song Machine series is a must listen, with the usual dizzying and colorful array of styles and motifs. While on 2017′s extremely disappointing Humanz the features overwhelmed the tracks to the point where it seemed like Albarn was guesting on his own album, here the collaborations do a great job of showcasing the featured artists while still allowing Albarn’s contributions to shine through. There’s also a nice balance between newer artists like slowthai and Octavian with usual suspects like Robert Smith and Beck. In terms of the songs themselves, there’s several outstanding tracks to be found, like the sunlit Desole, which cruises along on a propulsive beat and Fatoumata Diwara’s exuberant Malian vocals. Robert Smith yelps his way through the clattering title cut and Peter Hook of New Order brings the classic 80s vibe to “Aries” in a deeply grooving cut that’s both nostalgic and fun. If as the name suggest this is an ongoing series, we could be in store for a Gorillaz renaissance that only adds to their already considerable legacy.
1. The Avalanches - We Will Always Love You
Let’s be clear, The Avalanches will never make another album quite like 2000′s masterpiece Since I Left You. That album was a high water mark, a truly head spinning pastiche of thousands of samples that felt like one continuous stew of musical ideas. The album equivalent of an all night rave with one track flowing into the next, taking the idea of an album as one piece of music to its logical extreme. In today’s world an album that densely packed with samples isn’t even feasible, unless the group wanted to forgo album sales and simply give it away for free online. Instead of trying to recreate that lightning in a bottle, The Avalanches have created something far more subtle with We Will Always Love You, switching out turntablist stunts for an album that is still thematic, but in a far more restrained fashion. It still packs in a lot of material, but instead of switching the channel every couple minutes, or seconds, like their debut, it’s content to let things develop a bit more patiently. A lot of the songs here employ just a couple of musical ideas and let things unfold as a natural progression. It’s still quite a thematic journey with the motifs of space and mortality a common thread winding through the album’s 25 tracks, which also flow together with well executed transitions. Continuing the trend of their sophomore release Wildflower, the proceedings include tons of guests, but they blend into the tracks so seamlessly, with the exception of Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo, that they sound more like samples than features. While before The Avalanches music was bursting with youthful energy, here they present something more mature, and at times even regretful or bittersweet. It does seem a bit hasty to declare an album of this depth as album of the year a mere two weeks after its release, but I have no doubt that this album is a grower that will continue to reveal additional facets upon further listens. I’ve been around the musical block enough times to know that We Will Always Love You is the type of work that’s status will only increase with the time, truly visionary art nearly always does.

Levidromes
A levidrome is a word that when spelled backwards makes another word.
Well, at least not yet. It is not in the Oxford English Dictionary.
Levi Budd is a six-year-old boy from British Columbia in Canada who has coined the term 'levidrome' after spotting that the word 'STOP' spells 'POTS' backwards. After realising that there is no such word in English for this phenomena, a social media campaign has started to get this word in popular usage (hence this post).
I wrote a short Python script this morning that will pull all of the levidromes from a dictionary file. The full list is copied below.

It is interesting to note that some levidromes are also palindromes. I wonder whether we need a new word to describe this phenomenon also? Furthermore, there is no word in English for "a word that you make up in order to make another word make sense". I suggest: "emordivel" ?

Tried Tai Kee Wonton, a Taiwanese restaurant in a strip mall in a sea of business parks. Got the house special beef noodle soup. Pretty standard in terms of taste. Soft stewed beef and chewy noodles. BBQ Pork Wonton Noodle Soup (~$10), Roast Duck Wonton Noodle Soup (~$10). Someone’s sick so we had to get something warm and most importantly yummy. The wontons are pretty big and contain a lot of shrimp and meat. The egg noodles and bbq Pork were normal. The duck? Hard pass. Got some whacked pieces with a lot of bones. Probably back to the beef stew next time! 😋❤️🍜 (at Won Ton House) https://www.instagram.com/p/BvDPlFyDLlp/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1sjh4zqjjbr1s

Cheesy Sorghum and Shaved Squash Pilaf
Cheesy Sorghum and Shaved Squash Pilaf
Recipe
Long, slender ribbons of butternut squash make for a beautiful and unusual presentation; just be gentle when stirring so you don’t break all those gorgeous pieces. Try to grab a squash with a long neck–that straight surface works best for ribboning. If you can’t find sorghum, you can use farro.

Tangy Potato-Green Bean Salad
Tangy Potato-Green Bean Salad
Recipe
Hold the mayo. Replace the usual creamy potato salad dressing with this lively lemon-dill vinaigrette. f you are taking this to a party, chill the cooked potatoes in the dressing for 30 minutes, and then assemble the salad (with the green beans, radishes, chives, and remaining dressing) on a platter just before serving. Haricots verts are slender green beans. If you can’t find them, feel free to use sugar snap peas or snow peas. Cook them for one minute, along with the potatoes. You can make the lively lemon-dill vinaigrette ahead of time and store it in a Mason jar in the refrigerator. Shake it well before using. Serve this at your next outdoor barbecue or picnic and you won’t even miss the traditional potato salad covered in the mayonnaise dressing. Leftover salad is great served with cold chicken or a ham sandwich.

Bitter Greens Salad with Lemon and Pecorino
Bitter Greens Salad with Lemon and Pecorino
Recipe
Some mixed green salads seem like an afterthought. This one definitely does not. Although it may look unassuming, our Bitter Greens Salad with Lemon and Pecorino is bright, tangy, and assertive and just the right thing to serve alongside a hearty main dish like grilled steak, roasted pork, or a rich, cheesy pasta.

Shaved Apple and Fennel Salad with Crunchy Spelt
Shaved Apple and Fennel Salad with Crunchy Spelt
Recipe
Simply put, apples and fennel are right together–the flavors are so complementary. I love the way the paper-thin slices intertwine and then get interrupted by bright hits of parsley. Canola oil may seem like an odd choice, but I wanted to keep the flavors clean and straightforward; you can always use olive oil if you’d like the vinaigrette to assert itself.

Orange-Sage Rolls
Bake these light and tender whole-grain rolls ahead and freeze up to 1 month, or make the dough ahead and bake on the day: Punch down the risen dough to form a ball, wrap with plastic wrap, and chill 8 hours or overnight. Return to a bowl and let rise at room temperature for 1 1/2 hours before shaping.

Okra and Chickpeas in Fresh Tomato Sauce
Okra, an important member of the canon of Southern foods, can be fried, stewed, sautéed, and roasted. One of the more traditional ways to cook okra is to partner it with onions and fresh tomatoes. This easy and delicious recipe for Okra and Chickpeas in Fresh Tomato Sauce, developed by chef and cookbook author Virginia Willis, is ready for the table in just thirty minutes. Light enough for a main dish on a summer evening, you can also serve it with fish or grilled chicken. For the best results, choose fresh okra pods no longer than 4 inches in length.

Cheesy Cauliflower Latkes
Cheesy Cauliflower Latkes
Recipe
No Hanukkah celebration is complete without latkes. Go classic potato for the first night, and then try borscht-inspired beet, cheesy cauliflower and Gruyère, and earthy-sweet carrot and curry variations on the other nights. The trick to crispy cakes with less oil is to start with a very dry grated potato mixture: Drain well, and then squeeze in a clean kitchen towel. The frying oil may get too hot during successive batches; remove pan from heat for a minute or two, and lower the temperature as needed.

These elegant toasts, featuring sweet poached cherries and tangy goat cheese, are the perfect pre-meal nibble for a summer dinner party. While the recipe sounds fancy, it’s super easy to prepare. You’re simply simmering fresh cherries in a poaching liquid made by mixing orange liqueur, water, and a few other ingredients. This enhances the stone fruit with sweet, zesty flavor and creates a stunning crimson-hued sauce, perfect for spooning over rich and tangy goat cheese. A toss with fresh herbs and a light sprinkle of black pepper brings mellow earthiness for full harmony in every bite.

Classic Herb Stuffing
Classic Herb Stuffing
Recipe
A straightforward holiday stuffing calls for great bread; we love the nutty, toasty dimension of a bakery whole-grain loaf. Sauté the onion, celery, and carrot mixture until tender but not browned. The added moisture from the veg will help soften the bread and make for a more cohesive stuffing.

Orange-Ginger-Chile-Glazed Carrots
Orange-Ginger-Chile-Glazed Carrots
Recipe
Roasting whole carrots in a hot oven and then giving them a final toss in a sweet glaze yields an unforgettable side dish. Look for multicolored carrots for a stunning presentation. If you can’t find them at the supermarket, try a local farmers’ market. We use a little chile pepper to add just a whiff of heat. Feel free to increase the pepper or omit it, if you prefer. Also, you can sub chopped fresh thyme or mild flat-leaf parsley for the rosemary.

Golden Deli, 815 W Las Tunas Dr., San Gabriel, CA 91776
Beware of the crowds. I wanted to come to GD several times but was intimidated by the huge crowds waiting outside. One day I went early and there wasn’t a wait but by the time I finished my noodle soup, the line had formed and was growing ever longer. Lesson learned: Skip breakfast and get here early to avoid the crowds.
Golden Deli has been open for 32 years (according to the t-shirts the servers were wearing). The menu is extensive and includes pho, broken rice plates, noodle soups, chicken curry, beef stew, banh mi, vermicelli bowls, spring rolls, drink, etc. They even have cupcakes. The entrees are very reasonably priced in the range of $6 - $8.
The décor is simple but nicer than the usual authentic Vietnamese restaurant. Condiments are kept at the table.
* Beef stew with rice noodles: the beef stew is very soup like, it features a beefy broth sweetened with tomatoes, gigantic pieces of stewed marinated beef, soft stewed big carrot pieces, soft thin rice noodles, cilantro, scallions, onion, bean sprouts, with a wedge of lime and jalapenos on the side. It’s really comforting, the beef is delicious and the broth is full of flavor too.
* #13 Pho tu hieu: clear noodle pork broth soup with crab, shrimp, BBQ pork and won tons ($7 + $2 extra for won tons): soooo good because all the components are above average, including the densely packed thin skinned pork won tons with finely chopped wood ear mushrooms, the thin slices of roast pork, the tender shrimp and crab claw, the sweet light clear pork broth, the slightly chewy thick clear mung bean noodles. The scallions and cilantro add freshness and crunch.
