Net of wonder

The wake of the Diamond Princess off the coast of Mexico, March 2004
“The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever.”
— Jacques Yves Cousteau
After spending 21 of the past 24 years living near the ocean, I have no desire to live very far inland.  It’s interesting, because I don’t have any of the interests one might normally associate with coastal living.  I don’t fish,…

To follow your curiosity

To follow your curiosity

You have this spark in your eye,
Don’t lose it.
Music is a part of me, but it’s not everything.
As a kid, I used to be so hard on myself for so many things, thinking I needed to do more, be more, and find my worth in the value of my “success.”
But I’ve realized that we are so many things. I am not only a musician, but I am a writer, a blogger, a journalist, barista, coffee shop guru, runner,…

Hardcore about Jesus

Very funny in her own unique way

Extremely strongly opinionated

Crazy in the best way

Classy and sophisticated

The life of the party

I have so much love for her and I admire her greatly. We never moved beyond friendship, but I always wonder…

I just…to connect with someone on the level that I did with her…there are no words to describe the experience. As in, you think the same exact way, finishing each other’s sentences and that. It’s actually insane.

Stars - Erik Esenvalds (b. 1977)

Stars – Erik Esenvalds (b. 1977)

This article for Epiphany was first published in the January 2018 issue of our parish magazine.
Since joining the Manchester Chorale in April 2016 I have been introduced to a wealth of new choral music, some sacred, some secular, and some – like “Stars” – that seems to build a bridge between the two. Esenvalds is a young Latvian composer who writes in a broad range of styles, for a broad range of…
