The Fairy Queen of Scottish Folklore

Perhaps thanks to the terms seelie court and unseelie court, or maybe because of fiction, there is now modern folklore that there are two opposing fairy kingdoms. One is good, and the other is bad. However, the Seelie/Unseelie Court terms were historically just ways to categorize typically good fairies and typically bad fairies.

There is only one queen and king of the fairies mentioned in Scottish folklore.

"The Fairy Queen" by Arthur Rackham(1914)

The queen rarely has a name(though is sometimes called Nicneven), and is more often simply called The Fairy Queen, or The Queen of Elphame, which is within the Otherworld. She is described as being clothed in green, as having otherworldly beauty, and having great power.

Within church lore, she must send a human soul to hell every 7 years, otherwise hell will take a fairy soul. This is also related to the changeling folklore, where those souls are sometimes swapped out with something (or someone) enchanted to look like the missing.

However, there are even more stories that contrast this dark side by painting her in a kinder light. In those, the queen will remove curses off people and give gifts. Even The Silver Chanter is sometimes said to be given by the fairy queen to Ian Maccrimmon, after she was impressed with his musical talent (and good looks). In his hands only, it would play the sweetest music.

There is sometimes a fairy king also mentioned in folklore, but the queen seems to hold the most power.

Not only does the king take a background roll, but there are more stories of her taking human lovers than there are with even mention of the king. The most famous of these human lovers might be “Thomas the Rhymer.” He was said to be an amazing singer, but what instrument accompanied him can change depending on the tales; some times he is a famous lute player, other times a harp, and sometimes another instrument.

It was a dreadfully hot day when Thomas had set out walking, so he decided to take shade under a tree — called the Eildon(or Eldyn) tree — to catch his breath. There, on the slope of the east-most of the three Eildon hills, he found the spot so pleasant that he decided to stay and play a song on his instrument.

As he played, he began to hear a twinkle of bells on the wind. The source of the bells turned out to be a gorgeous woman who rode out of the woods on a white horse.

After much talking between the two, the woman admitted to being the fairy queen, and asked if he would go with her to the fairy realm. Awestruck by her beauty, he readily agreed. There, he enjoyed himself so thoroughly, he had no idea how much time was passing.

"They came at last to the fairy kingdom where revelry and dancing were the order of the day . Thomas passed so delectable a time that when the queen asked him how long he thought he had been there , he calculated some seven days had been passed chasing the golden hours with flying feet . He could scarce believe the beautiful sovereign when she assured him he had been gone from earth five years and two." "Folk Lore in Lowland Scotland" by Eve Blantyre Simpson(1908)

This marks another crossroads in how the tale (and the perception of the fairy queen) differs. As per the church lore, Thomas was supposed to be one of the souls given to hell, but the queen had grown a soft-spot for Thomas and advised him to run.

In other stories, he simply returned to the human realm and remained there for some time.

In both versions, before they parted, she charmed him to have a tongue that could not lie, as well as a gift of prophecy. He had thought the truthfulness would be a hindrance, but back in the human realm, his honesty earned him the name “True Thomas.”

There are many prophecies said to originate from Thomas, some of which people claim came true. If you are interested in a list, there is a lengthy one in the book “Popular Rhymes, Fireside Stories, and Amusement of Scotland” by Robert Chambers(1842).

After many years, he abruptly stated “I have been here long enough,” and simply left our world, never to be seen again. Some say the queen reclaimed him and he is now forever trapped in the Otherworld, while others say it was his own choice to return to the woman he loved.

I headed off to a local town to buy supplies from an apothecary, He took the list I made up and seemed perplexed.

He stood behind the counter, tall and wide with a braided red beard. He cocked his eyebrow at me, then glanced back to the list.

"Where are you going?" He said,

"Going on a quest."

"Where?"

"The castle, in Auntallia,"

"The thorn castle?" He asked, "You're Going to the thorn castle?" he asked as he brought everything over,

"I am. I'm going to save the Queen of Thorns."

"Well... I'm not talking myself out of a sale," He sighed, "eighteen gold kid."

"I'm thirty-three?" I complained handed him the money over,

"Ohh? You some kinda half-elf?"

"No,"

"You must have one hell of a de-ageing potion."

"I don't."

"...Whatever," he said giving me back my change,

"I take it you know something about The Thorn Castle?"

"Yeah, I do."

"Go on?"

"I've sold a lot of stuff to people over the years, saying they are going up to the thorn castle," He said, "How many do you think I've seen go?"

"Hundred?"

"Eight hundred and nine."

"Lot of people."

"how many do you think I've seen come back?"

"four hundred?"

"Zero."

"Ohhh dear..."

"How many do you think are dead?"

"Two hundred?"

"All of them."

"Ah..."

"Most don't get halfway through the forest of thorns."

"Why not?"

"The thorns are alive, they grow in the moonlight, they wind and strangle anyone who comes in there, any vine you cut three more grow from the stump, the castle doors haven't been opened it god knows how long. You're gonna die in that thorn forest."

"Thanks for the encouragement." I sighed, as I took my stuff and headed out.

I returned to the little town and headed up to the thorn castle, and prepared all my stuff for this.

"Hu, that uhhh that's taller than I thought it was," I muttered, I assumed this would be normal castle size but this was huge... and the thorn woods overgrown the castle. "Well... I said I was gonna do it." I sighed, as I took my sword and prepared myself, for the hellish hydra steams, the sharp thorns cutting my every inch, the intense insanity of stress and rage that I would have to work through. "Come on thomas, now's not the time to get a limp dick."

I did a first strike at the thorns and it seemed to stay cut long enough for me to head inside, slowly but surely cutting myself a path through the thick towering rose steams, doing my best to avoid the thorns cutting me open, until I found the castle door.

"hu... That was, deceptively simple." I said, from what everyone had hyped up I was expecting this to be considerably harder. But I'm not complaining, I forced open the heavy castle doors, and headed inside the grey stone castle.

The place was empty, covered in cobwebs, dust and where the thorns had broken through. I walked through for a little while my sword dragged across the floor the sound rang out through the castle.

"Now... where's the queen?" I muttered as I wandered the corridors but I stopped short as I saw a sign on the wall with arrows in various directions,

'kitchens downstairs'

'Throne room Left'

'Royal ballroom right'

'Queen's Chamber, In the tower.'

"Hu... Convenient." I said, so I followed the signs up to the tower slowly walking up the spiral staircase to the wooden door open a crack.

I held my breath a moment leaving my armour and sword by the door as I headed in, The room was huge with grand red and green fabrics lining it, a green flame still burning in the fireplace, fairy lanterns littered around the room, giving the place a sweet glow, a large arched window at the end of the room where moonlight flooded in, A canopy bed in the centre with beautiful sheer curtains. I walked over slowly to see her.

The Thorn Queen.

She laid gracefully on top of the black sheets embroidered with roses, her head on a satin pillow, she wore a beautiful green dress with a skirt long enough to be off the bed, the top of the dress had long sleeves, and a neckline that plunged... well uhhh to her stomach. them sitting there so beautiful and invitingly nipples hard to the cold, a tattoo on her sternum of an intricate rose wrapped in thorns, her hands on her stomach with a red ring on her finger, her hair in a tight braid with a silver thorn style circlet resting softly in her hair.

Holy god! she's beautiful!

She smiled as she laid me on her bed much in the position she was with her now looming over me and stroking my shirt with her fingers

"Ohh well uhh thank you, My Queen."

"Aww sweet and handsome," She smiled, "You know, I had always told myself that, whatever handsome knight came and broke my smell would get to take my flower."

"You're flower? Ohh like the flower the sorcerer wanted?"

The NPC crew of Fate’s Fiercest + evil stinky Thomas Goldenthorn.

Left to Right (and shortest to tallest): Sebastian Fras, Virtue Violetta, Olympia “Jury” Ezren, Oriela Brightheart, and Fenferin Moonglow!

Sebastian is an Undead Cleric of the Grave.

Virtue is a fey-touched tiefling cleric of life.

Jury is a dark elf (disguised teifling) echo knight fighter.

Oriela is a water genasi Swashbuckler Rogue/Cleric of love.

And Fenferin is a tiefling Onomancy Wizard. 😌

Some fun facts about them:

Oriela has done a drag show contest and won. Also his middle name is Daphne.

Virtue now has brass knuckles. She fights a lot.

Sebastian’s favorite color yellow, but his secret favorite color is pink. Second place is black.

Fenferin has psychic powers (totally didn’t murder someone for it)

Jury can’t roll Rs vey well because of her canines but can purr.

Sebastian doesn’t dress himself, the god that possesses his body gets him clothes to dress up in.

Oriela, before becoming a cleric, was only able to cast spells by storing the magical energy in his water form after his girlfriend uses him as an arcane focus. So, she would use him as an arcane focus to cast spells, and then he would store the energy in his water form and be able to cast it afterwards.

Fenferin is a total fanboy for the god of magic.

Sebastian is one of the shortest people in the party. He’s also one of the shortest in his family, beaten by his little sister who IS.

Fenferin’s horns and fingernails are coated in gold. He comes from a line of tieflings with fragile horns, so they cost them in gold to strengthen them.

Virtue used to be a feral tiefling actually! She lived in the woods, having been abandoned at birth, and was raised by nature itself. She lived with a pack of deer and fey, learning to speak via the mockingbirds in the trees. She eventually moved into a nearby town after having a dream that she should leave, and spent the rest of her time there in the church before meeting the crew!

Jury actually isn’t taller than Virtue, but they wear boots that make them taller than most of the other ppl in the party.

Fenferin has a tattoo of a crescent moon on the opposite arm that his girlfriend does, completely unaware of her tattoo when they met. They coincidentally had matching tattoos. They’re also canonically soulmates!

Names

Fantasy names are insane.

You take the reader to a place where there are no Earth names, English or otherwise, and you are instantly grappling with the way the human brain reads and processes data like nothing else.

Let's say I have an orc. Orcs can't have names like "Thomas" or "Jeff" because they live in a bronze age society that never used English or German or Latin or whatever, leaving me, someone who does not speak Orcish and who did not grow up in their society, to make up a name for them from a Romantic alphabet.

I could do something like "Ugrul" or "Glithe", sure.

Except if my story has four orc characters.

God help me if I have any elf or dwarf or, heaven forbid, dragon names in there.

Now I need four orc names, two elf names, a dwarf name, and three dragon names, because I am making art, damn it, and my pain is only fuel for my creative fire.

How do I make up ten names than cannot even sound like they come from Earth, but that do not confuse my reader when they are in close proximity, and still sound natural to the setting?

I can look up names all day long and find a billion names and what they mean, but how do I craft a name from thin air that inspires the sort of emotion I want attached to this character? Because that's my real question:

How do I make meaningful fantasy names?

If you have Ugrul and Glithe right next to each other, one of them is a battle-worn warrior who is contemplating his passage into the next life, and the other is a young man who wants to leave fighting behind and pursue his domestic calling, who gets which name?

"Glithe" for whatever reason, I don't know, is obviously the more conventionally attractive name. It's also the softer name. "Ugrul" is more stereotypically orcish, but it also sounds younger. I want to make decisions based off of the emotional phonetics of a name, how that name informs their character, their story arc, and their role in the narrative. But how do I do that if I can't even come up with the name in the first place?

My dragons? I don't know? Two of them are terrible mythical villains who must be avoided At All Cost, how the heck do I look at the English alphabet and make up a name that works for them? How do I make up an epic name for a world-eating monster when I can't go to Fantasy Baby Names Dot Com and find "Kleziriel: alternate of Klezriel; he who consumes godhood"

I personally have a trick that helps me with my fantasy names, and that is that I've put work into conlangs. This is a gift and a curse in some respects, but we're talking about names, where it's a gift.

Now, in my real story, there are two languages. I'm naming a character in my cold language, and I have the following sounds to work with:

m, n, ng, t, d, k, s, z, f, v, sh, r, y, l, ll, ee, eh, aa, oo, oh, oa

Looks like a mess when it's written out like this, but it makes things a bit easier to have this starting point at all.

From here, I can make a quick judgment of how I want this character to be represented. I want this person to come across as rough, but who maybe is revealed later to be soft on the inside; I want to make someone who surprises everyone by their softness and kindness. So I'll make them with a hard name.

n, t, k, z, ee, oa

Teek, Zeekoa, Koant

These names are fine, except that I don't like them.

Teek sounds like teak which is a kind of wood. Koant, when said out loud, is going to sound way too close to the C-word. Zeekoa is fine, but it's a lot of letters for two consonants. (Part of this is a conlang issues and not a name issue).

So I have one possible name that's still awkward, but if I settle on it in an attempt to figure out a better one later, it will become permanent. And I still have over a dozen other characters to name.

It's rough! And the worst part is that no one else seems to know how to do it, either. I look at a lot of "how to name your characters" things and they basically throw their hands up and say "You're on your own" when it comes to fantasy names.

I think the key is in the emotionality of the phonetics. I have an advantage in that I have a list of sounds written out for me to look at and start smashing together when I want to name someone. I also have some basic naming conventions for this language (girl's names are traditionally one syllable while boy's names are often two, and names don't start with an L-sound). But I don't have a very good knowledge on the feelings certain sounds elicit, nor do I have a chart that will share this info with me.

It's just annoying. Not to mention that people are going to be reading these words very fast, and they need to be coherent so they don't cause your reader's eye to stumble or trip. Your average 14yo+ reader will be spending between 1/3rd and 1/6th of a second on each word, and too many repeating letters or very long names can really interrupt that flow, not even accounting for the possibility that all of the orcs' names may sound similar enough that the reader has to stop and remember which one is Ugrul.

All I can do and all I can share is that I have sounds that work per culture. There are some basic flavors to sounds (sharp or smooth to the ear, round or flat in the mouth) that can be used to go along with a character's traits, or the traits you want them to be perceived as having. But on the whole, there isn't a lot fantasy writers are given to help the process without just smashing the keyboard until you get a nice combo, taking names from another source and shifting them to the left, or going through generator after generator until you get lucky. I haven't done extensive research on this subject, but I've looked it up several times, and the answer never seems to change.

So hopefully this helps a little bit, but mostly just thanks for listening.

The Last Inn

I was shivering from top to toe, my whole body numb from the damp and cold. The rain hadn't let up now for days and the grey sky showed no signs of letting up. I did my best to huddle under the covers of the cart trying to stop myself getting any wetter checking the road signs and my maps. I was hoping, praying even for an Inn not far from here. I found a few on the map along the road I travelled, but they mostly had been crossed out. But I knew I had little choice as there was no way around it, as I knew if I stayed out in the depths one more night, I'd be lucky to wake up again. And I used my last away crystal weeks back when I got lost in the indigo mines. I did my best to just push on and Hurry thought until Atlast I found it and I sighed in relief at an inn marked on the map just a few miles away down the road it had no cross, it was a risk but what choice did I have. I huddled under the covers wrapping my cloak around me tightly in the hope to just keep myself warm enough to prevent getting sick. Until I saw the Inn in the distance.

It was a tall and rather wide building, a stone shell with thick wooden walls, well built I must say, with colourful glass windows, a water wheel on the side working away on the small river, the river had a little stone bridge big enough for carts and caravans. And a stable made in the same style as the inn with a large pile of hay and some horses already there for the night. I hurried over the bridge and stopped just before the stables . I was fearful but I pulled my mask up and hood over further making sure to hide myself as much as I could, before going to the little round door. It wasn't locked and I could hear sounds on the other side so I nervously pushed it open and snuck myself inside.

It was a large room with heavy wood floors, a large brick fireplace on one side lit with its green flames, the back wall had a staircase leading up and a corridor leading back, then a long wooden bar with various bottles lining the back wall. Scattered around the room were wooden tables where many folks sat drinking, talking and such like. But the inn fell silent as I arrived as everyone turned to see me. I nervously stepped though going to the empty bar, I decided merely to wait assuming someone would come. I knew they were all watching me, all inspecting me. I heard footsteps behind me getting closer and closer until a man came to me laying his axe on the bar beside me, making my heart race.

"What's one of you little bastard's doing so far from home?" He asked the threat in his voice

"Just uhhh travelling" I answered with a gulp

"Travelling?" Another man asked as he came to my other side now giving me no escape I knew his kind his dark green skin and his accent tipped me off, "how's about you get back on your horse and keep on travelling" he warned

"Why would I do that?" I asked purposely stalling as I did my best to sneakily grab my dagger on my belt as I felt all those at the inn began to get closer looming over me,

"We don't take kindly to your…type around here." The first said "something bad could happen to you if you don't get out of here soon"

"Is that a threat?"

"Yeah it is you -" the goblin spoke but he was interrupted by a voice coming from the corridor, a frame voice shouting in goblin tongue something I didn't understand at all he shouted back but more argumentative words came and he stormed out the Inn completely. And around the corner came a rather sweet figure.

She was small in flat leather shoes with laces up her legs, a dark blue dress that stopped just below her knees with moons, stars and other celestial pattern on the fabric, a black corset around her well tied up and a apron around her waist with a bow at the back, her very long hair in a braid that then wrapped around and formed sort of sweet roll shape.

"Marcelius" she warns giving him a look “Take your dirty little axe of my bar” she warned him and he sent sitting back down "ohh Hello" she smiled to me

"Uhhh hi"

"What can I do for you?" She asks coming the the bar across from me

"Ohh uhh well I was hoping to get a room? If you have anything available, I've been in the road for days" I asked

"In this weather?" She asked and I nodded "oh you poor thing, I'll check the book just a moment" she smiled just going into that back room again but returning moments later with a box and a book she opened the book to the marked page and looked down her list "ah perfect I have one upstairs" she smiled open the little box to get a small key "do you need a stable too?"

"Ohh uhh yes please" I nodded

"Of course, that's two silvers a night then" she smiled

And I noticed the man from early kick a fuss slamming his tankard on the table

"Oi!" She yelled him in his direction, making him stop "that alright?" She smiled to me

"That's fine I just uhh… are you sure?"

She seemed puzzled a moment

"Are you sure?" I whispered leaning on the bar to whisper to her

"Why wouldn't I be?" She whispered back

I was scared but I pulled down my hood and my mask much to the horror and anger of those in the Inn but she only smiled and offered me the key

"You're sure?"

She nods so I handed her the coins and she handed me the key "come on I'll walk you up"

I nodded, going out and putting my horse and cart into the stables, taking my things for the night and following her up the stairs to a small door. “Here we are, nice view of the river. You need anything from towels to sheets, I’m just downstairs” she explained “and Those mercenary boys give you any trouble just let me know alright?”

“Will do, And - thank you.. very much.”

“You’re welcome” she smiled “Have a nice evening” she says before heading back down to the bar.

I unlocked the door and headed inside and locked it quickly behind me, it was a very nice little room with a big comfy bed with soft covers and pillows, some fresh fluffy towels, a nice lovely bath tub, some fresh handmade soap, and a nice little view out the back of the inn of the river flowing into the water wheel and back of the Inn had several warm pools and rocks much like the surrounding area but it was so beautiful and cosy, I happily had a hot bath and got cosy in the soft bed.
