Score free stuff at the Really Really Free Market

Experience the life-changing magic of tidying up (or, alternately, of getting free stuff) at this recurring event in the Junction Triangle. Once a month, declutterers and treasure-hunters meet in the open air to scour through pre-loved items, from clothing, shoes and jewellery to housewares, books, movies, pet items and more. There’s no cash and no swapping – just take what you want to keep. Everything not claimed at the end of the day gets passed along to charity.

Show up for National Day of Action on the Overdose Crisis

According to the latest numbers, more than 600 people died from opioid overdoses in the first six months of 2018. Three years after frontline workers first warned of the opioid-induced overdose crisis sweeping the country, we still grieve. And now the Ford government has announced it will no longer be funding safe injection sites. We’re falling behind when it comes to dealing with the biggest health care crisis since AIDS and stemming the death toll from tainted drugs. Organizers of this year’s National Day of Action on the Overdose Crisis, which takes place in cities across the country, say 2019 is a wake-up call for the urgent need for the legalization and regulation of all hard drugs.

Get legally stoned on 420 for the first time

Organizers for city’s first post-legalization 420 smoke-out couldn’t secure a permit for Nathan Phillips Square so are staging their annual event at Woodbine Park. The event is also happening on a Saturday, so you don’t have to worry about the stigmatization that comes with getting stoned midday on a weekday in uptight Toronto. The park location means there will be vendors and a stage this year.

Get social with Toronto’s cherry blossoms

Over 10,000 kilometres separate Toronto and Tokyo, but cherry blossoms can be enjoyed in both cities. Starting in April, partake in the centuries-old tradition of hanami, the Japanese term for viewing sakura, at parks and sites across the city including High Park, Trinity Bellwoods, York University and Birkdale Ravine. Once cherry blossoms bloom, the equally photogenic Eastern redbud follows suit. Find these bright pink trees at Corktown Common among dozens of parks.

Help clean-up and revitalize the Don Valley Ravine

The 200-hectare ravine stretching from Pottery Road down to Corktown Common is Toronto’s largest and most hidden urban park, which means it’s also a common dumping ground for trash. Join a large volunteer group to clean up a section of the lower Don Ravine and help revitalize a green space that’s home to deer, fox, beavers, muskrats and great blue herons.

Mark Earth Day at Downsview Park

We’d like to think that every day is Earth Day, but most people recognize April 22 as the largest environmental celebration in the world. While there are events scheduled across the city that day, a big one happens a week later. Now in its 15th year, Earth Day at Downsview Park is a free family-friendly event including outdoor vendors, a scavenger hunt, workshops and more. See a birds of prey demonstration, enjoy guided nature walks and take part in litter pickup and invasive species removal.

Rally to protect public health care

Spring is the perfect season to hit the streets, protest and demand progressive change. The Ontario Health Coalition, a network of more than 400 grassroots community organizations, says the Ford government’s recently tabled legislation to restructure health care will end up selling off vital services and impose costly “mega-mergers” that will put local services and hospitals at risk. In response, the coalition is organizing a massive rally at Queen’s Park, which will bring in busloads of protestors from across the province. So much for Ford’s promise to end hallway medicine.

Check out Carrie Mae Weems’s first Canadian exhibition

One of the U.S.’s most celebrated contemporary artists will make her Canadian debut at Contact Photography Festival, with three site-specific outdoor installations. Carrie Mae Weems, the first African-American woman to have a retrospective at the Guggenheim, will exhibit work at Metro Hall, TIFF Bell Lightbox and via a banner at 460 King West. Her work examines shifting cultural landscapes around the ways Black women have been represented in pop culture – today and throughout history. Other artists’ works will be shown at 16 public sites, as well as on billboards, around town.

Get a new perspective on Toronto during Jane’s Walk Festival

Explore your neighbourhood with fresh eyes or discover a new one during Jane’s Walk 2019, the annual festival that honours urban thinker Jane Jacobs through citizen-led walking tours. This year’s highlights include imagining the future of the high-traffic corridor Bridgeland Avenue, near the 401 and Dufferin; a stroll around old Agincourt in Scarborough to explore the development of a suburb and the racial tensions around the Dragon Centre; and a walk through Wychwood Park, designed in 1874 as an artists’ haven.

Catch a baseball game at Christie Pits

It doesn’t feel like spring until you sit in open-air stands and watch a baseball game. You never know when the Blue Jays will decide to open the dome, but in the meantime you can catch free games at Christie Pits Park. The Toronto Maple Leafs intercounty league team has been playing since 1969, with baseball at the park stretching back even earlier – and catching a game there is an essential experience. One of the city’s hidden gems.

Mosh at Yonge-Dundas Square during Canadian Music Week

Ever since the music fest moved from March to May, CMW has been summoning the summer spirit of its rival festival, NXNE, with outdoor gigs at Yonge-Dundas Square. No headliner has been announced yet, but last year Sloan took that spot. We do know the fest will have Azealia Banks (May 8) and Television (May 6), plus a discovery series with Hooded Fang, Witch Prophet, Ebhoni and Ice Cream. Plus: at least one event at the (finally) reopening El Mocambo.

Ponder urban monuments at the Bentway

Cities are questioning the relevance and meaning of public monuments, particularly as we Canadians grapple with the legacies of colonialism and residential schools. An international art exhibition and day-long event will ponder the future of city monuments to kick off urban park the Bentway’s spring/summer season. New Monuments For New Cities will feature 25 large-scale posters responding to the questions “What should a contemporary monument look like? Who are they for and what should they represent?” The show is simultaneously at similar land-reuse sites in four other North American cities, and will launch at the Monuments Summit on May 11. Public tours will happen every Tuesday (except June 4) during the run.

Eat, shop and party on the sidewalk in Parkdale

Summer is a big season for street fests and road closures, but if you can’t wait for pedestrian-only fun, head west. In early May, the annual Spring Into Parkdale Sidewalk Fest takes over a 1.4-km stretch of Queen West between Roncesvalles and Dufferin, with a kids area, a Little Tibet market, a zero-waste fair, free bike tune-ups, DJs, live music, a flea market and a night market. The event is emphasizing zero waste by encouraging visitors to bring their own containers, cups and cutlery.

Dance at Electric Island

There’s some sort of magnetic pull toward the ferry terminal the second the weather gets warm enough to expose your forearms, and Electric Island is the perfect excuse to head over to the island this spring. The first of four outdoor beach-adjacent raves takes place May 19. And though the lineup hasn’t been announced yet, you can bet on a strong-as-always slate of electronic acts and DJs.

Budweiser Stage, the outdoor amphitheatre at Ontario Place, is celebrating its 25th season, and it’s got a hell of an opener: the Strokes. (If you miss this gig, Bud Stage’s second show of the season is Florence and the Machine with opener Blood Orange on May 26.)

Visit architectural gems at Doors Open

The annual architecture festival gives curious Torontonians the opportunity to snoop inside spaces usually closed off to the public, like secret subway stations, water treatment plants and century-old movie theatres. For this year’s 20th anniversary, Doors Open will also include walking tours that explore the social impact of Queen East and the LGBTQ heritage of King Street, as well as spotlight Toronto’s Indigenous past, present and future through events, panels and films.

Take over the streets at Kensington Market’s Pedestrian Sundays

The launch of Pedestrian Sundays in late May means the city has completely shaken off its winter hibernation hangover. Street performers and pop-up vendors line car-free streets, the patios are bustling and Bellevue Square Park is packed with picnickers snacking on churros, empanadas, fish and chips and burritos from the nearby restaurants.

Ride into Bike Month

What better time than spring to discover the joy of biking? Toronto gears up for another bike month in June with the 30th annual Bike To Work Day group commute on May 27 hosted by Cycle Toronto. Participants will ride together from various starting points around the city and arrive at Nathan Phillips Square for a pancake breakfast and coffee. Go on a modern dance journey on the waterfront

Harbourfront Centre will raise questions around land ownership with a site-specific indoor/outdoor dance show taking place toward the end of the spring season. Toronto-based choreographer Heidi Strauss’s interactive experience Lot X will cap off the dance series Torque by leading audiences from Harbourfront Centre Theatre to the waterfront arts complex’s East Campus. The performance is weather dependent. Also: bring comfortable shoes.

Sway to R&B stars Jorja Smith and Kali Uchis at Echo Beach

Ontario Place’s other outdoor venue gives you a chance to put some sand under your feet via its (totally artificial) beach. After a couple of louder concerts from Bring Me the Horizon and Led Zep clones Greta Van Fleet, the venue hosts the perfect soundtrack to wafting warmness: a pair of buzzy and rising R&B/pop singers – UK artist Jorja Smith and Colombian-American Tyler, The Creator collaborator Kali Uchis.

Even if you don’t buy anything, theToronto Flower Market is beautiful to walk around in. Once a month from May to October, over 30 vendors selling Ontario-grown flowers and plants gather on the lawn of CAMH’s Queen West location. They’ve got everything from potted succulents and artful bouquets to bunches of tulips, wildflowers and more. The first market happens just in time for Mother’s Day.

REVIEW: Spider-Man - Homecoming

As the sixth film for the character, and the third cinematic interpretation within just 10 years, the announcement of Spider-Man: Homecoming raised fears that movie-goers have seen Spider-Man do whatever a spider can. The wonderfully campy, kind-hearted Sam Raimi series provided viewers with a pitch-perfect origin story and villains that felt ripped straight from the comic book pages. Then, the Amazing Spider-Man series, in their rushed attempt to build a cinematic universe, fervently piled on iconic characters and a plethora of plot threads.  It seemed like there was no new place for this next film to go. However, Spider-Man: Homecoming did come in with one distinct advantage, the justification for its existence: it was hard not to get excited about seeing one of Marvel’s most quintessential characters brought into the fold of the ever-expanding MCU. In the end, though, it was not this MCU element that ended up being the highlight of the film, but something else entirely. While Spider-Man: Homecoming’s new incarnation of the hero is still doing whatever a spider can, what he does best, better than any past version, is the film’s charming, John Hughes-inspired high school comedy.

Spider-Man: Homecoming begins by recapping events from Captain America: Civil War through a series of phone videos that both serves as a hilarious introduction to this Spider-Man’s unique, cheeky perspective on the MCU’s world, and fatally intertwines this new film with the rest of the overarching Marvel Universe. Both Sony and Marvel are clearly thrilled to implement this character into the larger brand, and they want to make sure you know it at every possible opportunity. Following that film’s exemplary airport brawl, Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.) declares Peter Parker (Tom Holland) not quite ready to be an Avenger, but leaves him with a personally-designed high-tech costume, tasking him to focus on being, for now, a friendly-neighborhood Spider-Man.

Stark fulfills a mentor role to Peter for most of the film, with Robert Downey, Jr.’s sarcastic but stern performance being probably the closest the role has hewed to the classic comic book character yet, and, thankfully, his presence never overshadows the focus of the film (even if his participation is sure to increase the box office revenue). The film’s superheroics are at their best when Peter is following Stark’s advice, solving street-level misdemeanors in a rollicking montage, deftly capturing both Spider-Man’s affable nature and the essence of the movie’s NYC environment. Somewhat unfortunately though, the film has larger obligations as Sony and Marvel’s prime summer blockbuster for 2017, and so Spider-Man’s low-key heroics are interrupted by a series of high-end robberies by the villainous Vulture (Michael Keaton). Keaton is a fun inclusion, reprising both the comic-book sensibility and bird-themed nature of his two most career-defining roles, and the Vulture’s smaller illicit ambitions are a nice change of pace from the typical supervillain’s world-conquering desires. However, the fights between the two are fairly lackluster, never really capturing the potential of aerial brawls.

Director Jon Watts, another director transplanted straight from a few low-budget indie hits to the high production value of a superhero film, feels unconfident in his staging of the film’s action sequences, but what he does bring to the table is a delightful vision for this high-school aged version of the web-slinger. Similar to the montages of Spider-Man stopping low-level crimes, the moments of Peter just goofing around with friends, messing with his suit’s fancy features, and struggling to navigate the social scene of the Midtown School of Science and Technology are the best parts of the picture (The John Hughes influence of these scenes are both implicit and, occasionally, explicit).

This is of course helped by the immense talent of the film’s young cast. Tom Holland, as in Civil War, expertly captures both the kind-hearted awkwardness of Tobey Maguire’s version of the character, and the quipy wit of Andrew Garfield’s, while still making the role his own. Holland not only shares great chemistry with the film’s more famous stars, such as Downey, Jr., but with his high-school peers, especially Jacob Batalon as his enthusiastic friend Ned. Laura Harrier as Liz makes for another involving Marvel romance, and it’s great seeing Beast of No Nation’s Abraham Attah getting more work. The standout from this impeccable cast though, is Zendaya as Michelle, a smart, reclusive classmate of Peter’s. It’s a wonderfully arresting performance, with a lively energy, making it feel like the character is experiencing her own coming-of-age adventure over the course of the film, even if her on-screen presence is limited. This cast is then rounded out by bit-roles from a surprising amount of comedic talent, including Hannibal Buress, Martin Starr, and Donald Glover. When not distracted by summer blockbuster and MCU obligations, Spider-Man: Homecoming crafts an endearing and reinvigorating version of the wall-crawler, perfectly capturing the awkwardness, uncertainty, and thrill of its high-school setting.

While the MCU aspect was pitched as a rationale for having another reboot so soon, it actually feels like the film would have been better off downplaying it, and focusing more instead of these fantastic high-school moments. Part of the appeal, and reason for success, of the MCU lies in the way characters and plot threads with weave between films, but here, it causes Spider-Man: Homecoming to feel more like just another entry in the MCU canon, as opposed to a fully satisfying film in its own right. There’s some potential for thematic depth in this film, with a lot of material centered on father-figures, mentors, and the conflict between the worlds of adults and teens, but the film seems uninterested in delving into any of this, making it pretty much substance-free. It’s entertaining, but not much more. And, although another cinematic rendition of the character’s origin story would have been redundant, the decision to completely disregard the impact of Uncle Ben’s death and his lessons of responsibility on this Spider-Man’s development robs a lot of the character’s depth (and could have greatly added to that aforementioned potential thematic exploration). The fact that the film has six credited screenwriters could account for why its focus feels so divided.

While the lack of completeness and depth still makes Sam Raimi’s films the best big-screen version of the comic character, Spider-Man: Homecoming offers enough of a refreshing new perspective to more than justify its existence (and is, thankfully, a great step-up from the Amazing Spider-Man films). The actual super-heroics are unremarkable, but the talented cast, humor, and coming-of-age-movie influence are exceptional, making the film one of Marvel’s most hilarious and moving films yet. It leaves one thoroughly excited at the prospect of seeing this Spider-Man, and the rest of the cast, continue their high-school journey in more, already-confirmed sequels.

Spider-Man: Homecoming, which also stars Jon Favreau, Marisa Tomei, and Bokeem Woodbine, is in theaters now.

That means you can eat giant pretzels and bacon cheeseburgers in peace, and not have to order a vodka soda at a beer hall.

It might be the best bite of BBQ in the city, and like everything on the menu, it’s available in their backyard every day from 12-8pm.

Like its sister restaurant, John Brown Smokehouse, Mothership Meat Company is one of the two places in LIC you should go for smoked meat. Prioritize the ribs and sausage, and know that they have a great craft beer list as well.

The two things we like most about Beebe’s are its big back patio, and its thin, crispy pizzas. Put the two together, and throw in some rosé or aperol spritzes, and you have a very good reason to head to this Italian spot in the Boro Hotel. It’s open for lunch and dinner every day, and whenever you go, head up to the hotel’s roof afterwards for drinks overlooking Manhattan.

Anable Basin $ $ $ $ Bar Food  in  Long Island City $$$$ 4-40 44th Dr

Because it’s located behind some warehouses in Long Island City, Anable Basin doesn’t tend to get as crowded as other outdoor bars, let alone ones on the river with unobstructed views of Manhattan. You can take advantage of that any day from 3-11pm, or from 12-11pm on weekends.

Woodbines is a neighborhood bar with great cocktails, and an afternoon drinking on their front patio would be an afternoon well spent. But drinks are only half the picture here, and you should absolutely explore the long menu of bar food as well. It ranges from Irish sausage rolls and curry fries, to short rib spring rolls and a lamb burger with goat cheese, all of which is available daily from 11am-10pm.

With a long menu of Peruvian dishes, like lomo saltado or an avocado stuffed with shrimp and quinoa, you might scoff at the idea of ordering rotisserie chicken. But that’s exactly what you should do at The Inkan. The juicy, crispy bird is their specialty, and should be part of your order, along with pisco sours and any of the various types of ceviche.

Every neighborhood has plenty of American spots serving burgers and natural wine, and every neighborhood has one place that does it better than the others. In LIC, that place is LIC Market. Seating on the sidewalk and in the covered back patio is available on a first come first served basis until 9pm Wednesday through Sunday. You can also get some excellent pancakes during weekend brunch, which runs from 12-3pm.

American Brass $$$$ Center Blvd & 49th Ave, 2-01 50th Ave

This high-end American spot opened in March, and while you’ll have to wait to see the big indoor space and oversized raw bar, you can get duck quesadillas, pizzas, and fried chicken and waffles right now. Their outdoor seating along Gantry State Park is available every day from 5-10pm (11pm on weekends).

Corner Saloons and Cork Ceilings: 14 Bars And Taverns of 19th-Century NYC

Manhattan’s familiar grid of streets and avenues is far younger than New York City. Proposed in 1811, it took more than half a century to actually build out all the way up to 155th Street.

What came before the grid? Farms and large swaths of slowly developed land, crossed by two large north-south roads, one of which would eventually be called Broadway. A traveler on Bloomingdale Road (today’s Broadway), the Bowery, and the east-west arteries of downtown Manhattan would find all sorts of businesses, and bars and taverns were the most common — especially in the less developed parts of the island.

Atlas Obscura has a full history of the building that housed Barney Flynn’s. Here’s a quick preview:

The Edward Mooney House, located in the heart of Chinatown, is considered the oldest surviving row house in New York City. Its long, storied history is just as colorful as its eye-catching red exterior. … Since then, the building has housed an eclectic mix of tenants including a tavern, brothel, general store, hotel, restaurant, pool room, and a Chinese club. Most notoriously, however, was its stint as Barney Flynn’s Saloon, a popular hangout for sporting men, gang members, and political hacks in the early 1900s.

The saloon was also the headquarters of Chuck Connors, a local celebrity nicknamed the “Mayor of Chinatown” for his slumming tours of the neighborhood.

Ephemeral New York was able to dig up a description of this tavern from a book printed in 1911:

“It was a favorite road-house for those who drove out upon the Bloomingdale Road (Boston Post Road) … the drivers of the day used to come as far as the Buck’s Horn, then turn through the quiet and shady Love Lane to Chelsea, and thence by the River Road through Greenwich Village and back to the city across the Lispenard meadows.”

From its earliest days, New York has never lacked for places to drink. One of the city’s most famous bars was the Shakespeare Tavern, at the corner of Nassau and Fulton Streets.

In the early 19th century, the Shakespeare — “distinguished for the superior character of its refreshments” according to one source — hit its stride as a gathering place for poets, writers, and actors . . . as well as the politicians, merchants, and wannabes who like to hang around them.

The New York Public Library’s blog uncovered the fascinating and culturally relevant history of the Old Grapevine Tavern:

The three story clapboard roadhouse was built in the 18th century and was located on the southeast corner of 11th Street and 6th Avenue. Originally a private home, it eventually became a saloon know as The Hawthorne. The 11th Street side of the building was covered in a gnarled old grapevine and by the early 1800s the establishment was simply known as the Old Grapevine. … During the Civil War it was a popular hangout of Union officers and Confederate spies. Later, when the Jefferson Market Courthouse was built the local lawyers and politicians would gather there to talk business. Artists and actors also met there. It was the ideal place to get news and information, or in the case of spies and politicians, the ideal place to spread rumors and gossip, leading to the popular phrase “heard it through the grapevine”.

The Daytonian in Manhattan blog discovered a description of this tavern in the same 1911 text recalling the Buck’s Horn Tavern:

Stephen Jenkins, in his 1911 The Story of Broadway, noted “It was a favorite road-house on the Bloomingdale Road.” A notice in The New York Herald on May 9, 1844 announced “This beautiful place of resort, opposite Madison square, corner of 23d street and Broadway, is opened for the season, and Palmer’s omnibuses drive to the door[.] It is one of the most agreeable spots for an afternoon’s lounge in the suburbs of our city. Go and see.”

Aside from being a stopping place for coaches, Madison Cottage offered diversions. Later The Sun wrote “Here gathered the sports of the middle of the last century, arranging cock fights and dog fights, prizefights, athletic contests and games of the day.”
