Okay, Let’s Actually Talk About Snom and Frosmoth
Tumblr media Tumblr media
872: Snom
It's taken us a while, but we've finally got our first Bug/Ice type! Though I also suppose it was only a matter of time before the Jewel Caterpillar got a rep in Pokemon, with how much it's shown up in internet articles as “neat bugs to look at.” Never mind ALL bugs are neat to look at... but yes... Jewel Caterpillars are nice too. Snom is about as perfect of a stylization as you can get. I love its pudgy little body and how friggin squishy it is in its animations. It even has secret adorable feeties!
It also has a neat way to not just make the icicles on its back just a cheap visual gimmick. Snom evidently loves to eat snow, which it then turns its eaten snow into the ice crystals on its back. Neat!
Tumblr media
873: Frosmoth
Oddly electing to skip a pupae stage, we evolve straight into a moth Pokemon and... HMMM I expected just a little bit better. The base body is perfect, with its fuzzy antennae and how it has fuzzy arms that it folds around itself to make it look like it's engulfed in a very warm coat. As well as the fluffy eyelashes. It's overall the first moth Pokemon to really incorporate moth's reputation for being one of the fluffiest bugs out there.
I just wish its wings didn't feel so weak. The snowflake-esque pattern is a good start but it once again feels like they cut things short before the design was entirely done. I was half expecting a more elaborate pattern to light up during attack animations or something but no such thing occurred. Which is disappointing, since the pretty patters are part of what makes moths so pretty.
Tumblr media
I get that the Woolly Bear Moth, the moth Frosmoth here is mostly likely taking inspiration from, is not too colorful, but it still has a neat monochromatic pattern on its wings.
That said though, it is neat enough to translate a moth's powdery scales as “snowflakes.” Shedding scales seems to be a go-to power when it comes to granting fictional moths superpowers, but the snow scales are definitely a neat idea!
Tumblr media
Personal Score: 8.5/10
Tumblr media
Though that said... I have some concerns.
Remember earlier at the end of Centiskorch's review where I said it'd be really disheartening if there was only one other Bug type this Gen, let alone only one more arthropod? Frosmoth is it. Most generations are pretty good about showing off a pretty good variety in arthropod Pokemon. The only other time we only got three lines was Gen 6... but it was somewhat fine because despite having one of them being taken up by the obligatory butterfly, one was a pistol shrimp and the other a goose barnacle! And of course this isn't to mention how much Alola absolutely SPOILED us with perhaps a handful of repeat animals like a stag beetle and a hornet... but it was made up for because we wound up getting so many long-awaited Bugs like mosquitoes, cockroaches, and even an isopod.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, this is all Galar has to show, at least unless they were holding out on us and all the new arthropods are behind the DLC or something. A second ladybird, a second centipede, and now our bajillionth lepidoptera. One of the biggest appeals of a new generation is seeing which of your favorite animals will get represented next. And of course, as an avid lover of bugs, I am not at all picky what new bugs turn up in Pokemon. I have my preferences, but anything new is good for me. So... yeah. Imagine my heartbreak upon learning my favorite phylum was getting benched for an entire generation. I'm all for repeating animals but this is silly, given how arthropods make up the majority of the known animal kingdom. So many of my dream Pokemon are things along the lines of Mantis Shrimps or Treehoppers or Grasshoppers or Pelican spiders. In fact, as far as “dream animals I want made into Pokemon” goes, the only Pokemon that's really come from any of my “dream animals” is Applin and the later Dreepy line. Compared to the previous generation which delivered me an isopod, diving bell spider, a mosquito, a bee fly, a coconut crab, and something properly mantoid. At least solely from a standpoint of new animal representation, Gen 8 is easily the worst Gen yet.
All this to say that these are reasons why I'm gonna start a small little “finale” for the Pokemon reviews after I do the Gen 8 wrap-up. Exactly what I'll keep hush on for now, but I'll be working on it.
Of course, “finale” as in “for now.” Still got the DLC to talk about later this year and I'll probably review Pokemon designs until either me or Pokemon dies, whichever happens first.

SUNMOON POKEDDEX CHALLENGE DAY Day 29 - Least favourite Pokemon: Crabominable
A few years ago I did a challenge where I would only draw my least favourite Pokemon, one for each category. I'm not doing that again but I did this one slot because even though I didn’t particularly learn to like that many Pokemon through the challenge it was still a fun one. I think all Pokemon have cool designs when you look at them close enough and they all deserve a chance for fair portrayal.
Still, it doesn’t mean I like them. In my opinion Crabominable (or “Grab-A-Nipple” as I call it because it’s hard to pronounce) is the ugliest Pokemon by far, but I still tried my best to give it a fair representation. It's a neat concept and it's not half bad a fighter either. Based on some crabs, like woolly crab and coconut crab. Woolly crabs are especially neat.

Pokemon Asks that I’ll answer right away ‘cause its fun
Leaf Stone: What is your favorite grass type? Gogoat, it was the first pokemon of the type that made me appreciate grass types especially because they could do what electric types couldn’t, be super effective against rock/water types.
Fairy Tale Girl: What is your favorite fairy type? Klefki
Alola: Who were your team members in Pokémon Sun/Moon?  Decidueye, Toucannon(temporarily), Archanine, Crabominable, Magnezone, Greninja, and Vikavolt. I got vikavolt back when it was a grubin because I wasn’t lucky enough to find a pichu on route 1 before the festival fight so I stuck with it and I like steel types because of the fairy type invasion so I kept magnemite when I found it, and I didn’t realize it would take so long to evolve charjabug into vikivolt so it stayed, and I like that bug is strong against dark.
Max Repel: Which Pokémon annoyed you so much, that you ended up using a repel? Mudbray, I didn’t have the patience for a five percent chance encouter with Milktank or Tauros, or whatever is on route 13 when you see oodles of Mudbray again on Ula’Ula.
Completionist: How many times have you completed the Pokédex? Never, the lengths one goes for every frickin’ pokemon is not worth it. Especially these days since we’re well over the 700 cap.
Hex Maniac: What is your favorite ghost type? Mimikyu, how can one resist, its part fairy!
Gym: If you were a gym trainer, what would be your specialist type? Water, water has always been my favorite typing.
Kanto: What is your favorite gen one Pokémon? Geodude actually, back then they were still experimenting with type moves so certain ones were more normal type than fighting or in gust’s case, flying.
Team: What team do you belong to in Pokémon Go? (if I had it) Mystic.
Gen: Your favorite Pokémon generation? V, I loved the Unova pokemon.
Swimmer: What is your favorite water type? Feraligatr, its mah babeh!
Ash Ketchum: Your favorite Ash Ketchum (anime) hat? Oof, Original, XY, and SunandMoon.
Poké Snacks: Poké Puffs or Poké Beans? Puffs, there’s something satisfying about a cupcake for pokemon that even have swirly edible toppings and decorations at times.
Rotem: What is your favorite region in Pokémon?  Johto, my first gen that I ever played in, its home to me.
Blizzard: What is your favorite ice type? Crabominable, I haven’t had ice types very often, because of all the type disadvantages, but I waited so long for my Crabrawler to evolve so I love it, even though its trickier to get a super effective Earthquake it because of its speed.
Eevee: Your favorite eeveelution? Espeon, It was my first Eevee evolution during gen 2 even though my mother had the type advantage of her beloved Umbreon at the time.
Legend: Your favorite legendary/mythical Pokémon? Raikou, it was the first legendary I caught though I was so upset it showed up once in the main anime and only had a hard to find special, no movie like the other two got.
Companions: Who is your favorite travelling companion from the anime? I have a few, Brock, Cilan, and the entire XYZ crew, Squishy totally counts by the way.
Flame Charge: Your favorite fire type? Oohh, toughie there, depending on whether or not the girl in the game made it into the anime and has one of the starters, I base my player character off of them complete with their name and choose their starter, so as anyone would probably guess, I switch off from water to fire types. Regardless, Unova was the first gen in a long time that I could be myself so when I first picked Oshuwatt, I was happily surprised to get a Pansear to compete properly against the first gym who was of course Cilan for me. So Pansear and Simisear are my favorites.
Buddy: Your all time favorite Pokémon? Steelix. Once X and Y hit us with that Fairy invasion I fell in love with Thumper the Steelix that you trade with an NPC fairly early on.
Name Rater: Do you nickname all your Pokémon, only some or none? ALL of them!
Hoenn: Ruby or Sapphire? Sapphire baby, gen 3 may not have been my favorite region EVER, but I’ll take the happy go lucky pirate people over land mass geezer and his psychotic henchmen who directly threaten to kill you, any day.
Variant: What is your favorite regional variant? Exeggutor, the memes man, it will always be funny, but I’m a little upset that the shirt Sina wears is only in Sun, ‘cause I got moon, and I really wanted that shirt ya know? but I forgot the games went by shades and hues depending on the version, still was satisfied at getting the Iconic shirt with Prof. SAMUEL Oak’s face on it, but my go to outfit is actually the Woolly Crab ensemble. Its adorable. But yeah, Alolan Exeggutor is awesome.

Crabominable (740): Woolly Crab Pokemon - HT: 5′07″ WT: 396.8 lbs.
It aimed for the top but got lost and ended up on a snowy mountain. Being forced to endure the cold, this Pokemon evolved and grew fur.

Crabominable (#740): Woolly Crab Pokemon - HT: 5′07″ WT: 396.8 lbs.
It just throws punches indiscriminately. In times of desperation, it can lop off its own pincers and fire them like rockets.
