“Shorter workweeks to boost employee mental health and productivity may be catching on in some places around the world, but at least one country appears to have missed the memo.

The South Korean government was this week forced to rethink a plan that would have raised its cap on working hours to 69 per week, up from the current limit of 52, after sparking a backlash among Millennials and Generation Z workers.

Workers in the east Asian powerhouse economy already face some of the longest hours in the world – ranking fourth behind only Mexico, Costa Rica and Chile in 2021, according to the OECD – and death by overwork (“gwarosa”) is thought to kill scores of people every year.:

i won't be posting this week. i'm taking the week to really enjoy my spring break and do some work on a longer wip i have, as well getting through some requests so i can focus more on my lesson plans during my up coming practicum. sorry for the inconvenience, but i do hope you understand

What I wore in a week - 15 - 19 Jan 2024

1. Monday

Monday was unusually calm, not many meetings to attend so I wanted to wear something comfortable. I chose a simple but elegant pair of black pants, a brown flowy blouse and a black gilet.

2. Tuesday

Tuesday was full of meetings and we had an important visitor that I needed to greet. Decided to go for a beautiful burgundy pantsuit and decided to pair it with a camel gilet and bag. I also wore a camel coat which I believe made the outfit very extra. Really enjoyed this outfit!

3. Wednesday

Wednesday was also very busy, and was really cold outside. Decided to put on a very fancy looking velvet skirt with a trendy stripy top. As I was cold, decided to put a warm jacket on as well. This outfit is very simple, yet I was feeling feminine and powerful in it at the same time.

4. Thursday

Thursday when I woke up and started to dress, I did not know what to wear at all, so decided to go for something old bit trustworthy: monochrome outfit. I really love this blue color on me so I felt absolutely amazing the whole day in spite of being extremely tired. Very good tip for eveyone when you do not feel at your best: wear a color that you LOVE, it will instantly help you better your mood and elevate your feelings. As I do not have blue shoes, decided to pair the blue outfit with cream boots and bag.

5. Friday

On Friday I did not go into the office: I did not feel very good. Decided to visit a coffee shop in the morning and work from there. I wanted to dress very comfortably and warm so decided to go for my new cream knitted sweater and cream pants, pairing them with cream accessories (cream bag from the day before…I did not want to pack into another bag….) to end up with an all cream outfit. But I did not mind it, felt really cozy and that day turned out to be really awesome at the end.

Traditional economists tend to focus on how a shortened work week can increase productivity, which limits the conversation to the needs of capital and thus only further hamstrings the labor movement.

The successful fight for the 8-hour workday did not hinge on appeals of increased worker productivity — it was a bloody, centuries-long battle fought by socialists, unionists, and similar groups. It was part of a much broader movement advocating for labor rights and protections against capitalists, not for them.

Thinking in terms of productivity and profits only serves the needs of the bosses. If we want to win the fight for our right to free time, we shouldn’t wear a capitalist cloak and wave a banner representing “the economy.”

Rather, the fight must be framed as just one element in a broad set of demands that shift the scale of power, and break the stranglehold that economic thinking has on us.
