idk man i just work here
listening
not another rockstar, maisie peters. spotify
this is a little poppier than i generally prefer-- the first knee-jerk comparison i can make for the vocals is taylor swift, esp in the first verse? luckily for everyone, i was white-knuckling it down the katy freeway (26 lanes. never again) and did not have the extra concentration necessary to skip it on whatever autogenerated dance playlist spotify spat out for me. as a fellow woman with a Type, i must tip my hat to ms peters.
Hmm, funny I could pick 'em in a line up, line up Pretty certain I could do it with my eyes shut, eyes shut A little self-obsessive and I sign up, sign up Where's the pen? Where's the line?
@pasta-pardner has made a gorgeously lush electronic/indie pop cowboy playlist. my very favorite song (so far, still have it on loop) is Horsie by Twilight Circus Dub Sound System. it sounds like the opening theme to Samurai Champloo. it ripples and grooves. it lives somewhere between rock and reggae. the whole album is incredible music to hang out to.

retractionwatch (my beloved) linked out to datacolada.org in a recent article and my ears perked up. data colada gets REAL deep into the investigative reporting of specific papers, including some fascinating excel sleuthing. they use CalcChain!!! i thought i was the only one who used CalcChain!!!
CalcChain tells Excel in which order to carry out the calculations in the spreadsheet. It tells Excel something like "First solve the formula in cell A1, then the one in A2, then B1, etc." CalcChain is short for 'calculation chain'.
one of my worst traits as a person is that i looooooooove an academic trainwreck. i love watching academia eat itself. i love watching people get caught for sloppy shit like "excel file sorted REAL weird, pointing to tampering with individual data points"

ive been playing genshi/n impact like it's my job. having a lot of thoughts about crunch, and content, and player expectations vs shareholder expectations and Line Go Up and if AAA free-to-play video games are at all ethical to play for anyone ever, but hey! look at this snarky catgirl!

also lol. lmao. this is a game for children. we are all aware of the restrictions and limitations placed upon games for children in the chinese and american markets so yeah the answer is going to be yes, every time

making
lately i have been going to my best friend's house after work (what an unimaginable sentence a month ago) and hanging out and watching whatever toddler shows are on tv while we shoot the shit and i knit. there's another half-repeat on the baby blanket for the baby who has just turned four months old, but it's in the car and the night is dark and full of mosquitoes.
i literally cannot do any life shit, even most doctor's appointments, until i have a real physical stable address so all i am really doing is knitting and playing genshi/n and opening and closing my email like the fridge. i have one security deposit back from the old mass apt plus one more paycheck (but, crucially, not the nearly $2k from the roach apt and we are rapidly approaching lawsuit time) so the cat and i are a little bit more stable/able to put down a security deposit on something else the minute it comes along. this would not have been possible without the incredible generosity of readers like you during that very bad first week here. thank you. i want to do some sort of thank you...stream? liveblog? series of posts about something? but i'm not sure what yet. stay tuned. tell me your thoughts. what would you like to see?

9 Anime to Watch if You Want to Feel Like 👇🏾
Tumblr media
I wanna go to war! I want a lightsaber! AHHHHH! 💪🏾
Sometimes, ya just wanna see heads roll. Following the path of a "righteous" or... morally ambiguous person with a mission wreaking havoc against insurmountable odds (cue the plot armor). This collection just happens to be bite sized for your viewing pleasure. Check out the short series/movie recs below for good action. Since that feeds into a lot of sub-genres, there's more of a focus on adventure or drama (as opposed to horror or gore). ⚠️ Most of these recs are for mature audiences so be advised!
Tumblr media
Michiko and Hatchin (series)
Filed under: "I love the kind of woman that will actually just kill me." Michiko is equal parts lethal and lovely. In fact, her looks often leave those who seek to capture her unaware of how big a threat she truly is. She is reckless and relentless with a single minded determination. The story starts out as a quest for a man but evolves into one of camaraderie between the titular characters. TBH I'd love more WOC led action series/suggestions.
Sub/Dub | Funimation, Crunchyroll
Tumblr media
Trigun (series + OVA)
When @elaine2895 asked some of my favorite characters, the reflection reminded me of one of my favorite anime when I was younger. The series follows Vash the Stampede, a wandering gunman who draws the ire of those he comes across as he leaves chaos in his wake or, worse, inspires fear in the very civilians he makes it a point to save. The bounty on his head pretty much guarantees he will never know peace but he continues to roll along until he's forced to confront his past.
Sub/Dub | Funimation, Crunchyroll, Hulu
Tumblr media
Samurai Champloo (series)
I almost added Samurai Champloo to this list instead but I'm glad I held out. It's a great addition to this list, I just happened to find the fight sequences to be particularly beautiful and the soundtrack is stellar. Fuu embarks on a mission to find a samurai who smells of sunflowers with Mugen and Jin begrudgingly in tow. While Mugen and Jin manage to stave off their animosity toward one another to work together as her body guard, they manage to make new and exciting trouble along the way. With Fuu's quest driving each of them forward, all three of them are forced to to come to terms with their separate pasts on their journey together.
Sub/Dub | Crunchyroll, Funimation, Hulu
Tumblr media
Gangsta. (series)
See those tags up close and it just may be the last thing you see so let that be a warning. Nico and Worick are handymen who specialize in doing the dirty work no one else is really capable of doing. In a city overrun with corruption and sin, they play their role to maintain a sense of balance for those around them. So when a new force rears its head in Ergastulum, causing trouble for their esteemed contacts, they handle it the only way they know how. By any means necessary.
Sub/Dub | Funimation, Hulu
Tumblr media
Banana Fish (series)
I try to keep recommendations diverse so the fact that this series wound up on this list before then ending up on this list of favorite characters...? It so squarely fits into this genre, it can't be avoided and it's so captivating. Ash, 17-year old gang leader, is entangled in a conspiracy that grows larger and larger by the day. Having spent too much of his life under the thumb of a large mafia boss, he navigates the rotten underbelly of gangland New York tracking down the origin of a strange drug that made its way to his turf. The very same mafia boss threatens his freedom and life the closer he gets to the truth. Despite the growing dangers associated with exploring this rabbit hole of a drug, his resolve doesn't waver. Where some of these shows tend to burn brightly and fade from your recollection over time, this is definitely one that stays with you (if the rest of my blog is any indication). ⚠️ Pay attention to trigger warnings!
Sub | Prime Video
Tumblr media
Cowboy Bebop (series + OVA)
Bounty hunters have the benefit of no one digging too deeply when you show up to collect on an even shadier guys outstanding bounty. Cowboy Bebop pulls back the curtain on the lives of Spike, Jet and Faye as they barely skate by on what little bounties they're able to collect on. The bonds that keep them together are tenuous and it's not always clear what side of the law they're really on. While the show seems relatively easygoing and without a larger mission, eventually everyone has to answer for what drove them to be a bounty hunter in the first place.
Sub/Dub | Netflix, Funimation, Crunchyroll, Hulu
Tumblr media
Akame Ga Kill! (series)
Filed under: "I love the kind of woman that will actually just kill me", "Don't get too attached" and "That first episode tho 👀" To say the story follows Tatsumi would be a bit misleading, especially considering the titular character is so obviously Akame. Nonetheless, the series kicks off with kind and naive Tatsumi, hoping to raise money for his village, separated from his childhood friends when bandits strike. Finding himself far from the kindness of his village, he becomes ensnared in a greater scheme to combat corruption in the Capital between two opposing forces the Night Raid and the Empire.
Sub/Dub | Hulu, HiDive
Tumblr media
Dorohedoro (series)
Filed under: "I love the kind of woman that will actually just kill me" Age old story of a man who's transfigured into a reptile works to exact revenge and remember who he was before the transfiguration by kicking lots of ass. Pretty straightforward but things are not always as they may seem. Any questions, ask the guy inside his head.
Sub/Dub | Netflix
Tumblr media
Love of Kill
This show takes enemies to lovers a bit literally. It's basically the product of what happens when an unstoppable force (Ryang-Ha the assassin) meets an immovable object (Chateau the bounty hunter). I think they call that the irresistible force paradox. So it goes as Ryang-Ha develops a quick and inexplicable fondness for someone who continues to be a rival and threat to his livelihood. Begrudgingly, Chateau entertains his whims as a means to an end but, eventually, the cost of keeping his company gets to be a little too pricy...
Sub/Dub | Crunchyroll

They just don't make hyper-fixations like they used to
I'd say I should "hyperfixate" on my craft but my craft is just video gaming these days no motivation for anything else. Photo mode just so happens to be a joint thing with my new hyperfixation, Cyberpunk 2077 but cyberpunk is a very taxing hyperfixation the mods, already have my startup screen lagging and I felt I only downloaded like 3gb of mods?
Anyways um yeah I'm still breathing ig maybe I should actually do something on the weekend. A "purpose". I do a job I find "helpful" (helping older ppl) but once I clean up I'd rather just go home, I go home and then I'm sitting at home listening to my mom yell about shit or yell at me then I game to focus on anything else, or sleep and then I sleep and dream about stupid shit like nightmares or what I wish for? I don't really know.
Also I have like 20 cavities but haven't done shit about it *old cringe white guy smiling* like wtf ??
Cowboy bebop, Naruto, Rick and Morty, cyberpunk, samurai champloo, amvs, (idfk) Tokyo ghoul, I just don't fucking know anything
Idk maybe I'm just pressuring myself to have a "purpose" but maybe I should just be happy I'm alive and can even breathe a little longer. Especially the way the world has been looking. Everytime I think about having to get up to work I always have these "existential thoughts" ok bye
Edit: and my phone is glued to my hand or something. I LITERALLY PLAYED "MASS EFFECT" SO I COULD FEEL POSSIBLY WHAT PPL APART OF THE FANDOM FEELS SND I FELT LIKE A "PANG" OF INTEREST AND THAT WAS IT. Is there a correlation to me self diagnosing myself as adhdautistic? So many questions. I just watch tv shows just to pass the time mostly, most movies are just so formaliac, I have a hard time fully enjoying something. Ig if I watch with friends but still. I find myself mostly watching comedies on my alone time, Bob's burgers is just classic, and Rick and Morty still funny but I've watched it so many times. I have been making yt videos lately but then I have to remotivate myself to make yt videos again and I feel I only be having energy just for the gaming part so I stream stuff. (And i enjoy it) but then the depression sets in(or the other shit) and then I get upset that streaming isn't going to do anything for me (I'm never making it out the hood) not like I hate the hood but I don't exactly love it either,
Maybe this is just the disease of the impostered black "creatives" I don't fucking know

My favorite anime list (Update)
Special mention to Tokyo revengers, Zombieland saga, K-on, Samurai champloo, RWBY, Vivy Fluorite Eye's Song and The promised neverland...
15- Tengen toppa gurren lagann
A story where you grow up with the characters, you become deeply attached to them and suffer with them. The animation, the soundtrack and the direction... It's just amazing.
PD: Something very strange happened to me. I have a playlist on YouTube with 719 songs, and while I was writing this, "Libera me from hell" started playing out of nowhere... What a good timing XD
Tumblr media
 14- Kill la kill
It is a case similar to the first, for some reason I enjoyed it a lot. I love the friendly relationship between Ryuko and Senketsu, very nice.
Tumblr media
13- Akame ga kill
Honestly, it's not one of the best on this list... but its plot hooked me and marked me in a bad way hahaha (damn it that chapter of the manga in which its main characters were three girls)
Tumblr media
12- Made in abyss
I love made in abyss, I love how its world expands and the excitement you feel exploring it. It is an adventure that you live together with the characters... and most importantly... the story is incredible. highly recommended.
Tumblr media
11- One punch man
I am a big fan of good animation and unbridled action, and this series overflows with action and quality everywhere. It may not be the best story of all, but it is very entertaining to follow. And his manga... murata is a monster when it comes to drawing, it's just awesome.
Tumblr media
10- Assasination classroom
At the time it was my second favorite series. His characters were his strong point, you can get attached to all of them without much trouble... also, I love Koro sensei with all my heart... And I swear that it is the only anime with which I have cried seas (Almost 15 minutes crying inconsolably).
Tumblr media
9- Boku no hero academia
The same thing happened to me as with One punch man, good animation, good plot and good action. I don't really have much to say lol.
Tumblr media
8- Danganronpa
Danganronpa was a new experience for me being both an anime and a video game. His story and the desire that I had to discover it place him in this position on the list. I really enjoyed playing it with my friends haha.
PD: I like Hinata more than Naegi, I'm not saying he's the best, but I like Hinata more.
Tumblr media
7- Fullmetal alchemist
Fullmetal alchemist is an incredible and almost perfect story. Its villains are incredible, its protagonists are endearing and everything that the work encompasses is wonderful.
Tumblr media
6- Tokyo ghoul
I really liked its story and its characters, plus I saw it with my friends, so I enjoyed it twice as much. I remember that we just wanted to see Kaneki happy XD
Tumblr media
5- Shingeki no kyojin
Everyone's favorite series... with that ending... PIGEON. Snk was the first anime that I saw that was really an anime, previously I had only seen anime on television when I was very young. In 2016 suddenly a friend told me about this... and I started to see it... I fell blindly in love. I had never seen anything like it and I loved it. Currently I still enjoy it a lot and I think it is a series that anyone can watch.
Tumblr media
4- Hunter x Hunter
And we come to the heavyweights... Honestly, my tastes are based on how much I enjoy them, what they transmit to me and the experiences I have when I see them. And if hunter x hunter is so high, that's why. Hunter x hunter is an incredible story, his handling of powers is one of the best built I've seen, and his characters have impressive development and charisma, Gon, Killua, Meruem, just to name a few. highly recommended
Tumblr media
3- Hajime no Ippo
I was very surprised with Hajime no ippo, I didn't expect much from him and in the end I ended up loving him, his characters and the story of overcoming that the series transmits to you... it's a nice experience.
Tumblr media
2- Gintama
Be careful I'm becoming a fanboy hahaha. For me, Gintama is that ghost series that you start watching just because you're bored and have nothing to do... And never in my life have I been so proud of being bored haha. Gintama is incredible, its bizarre story is one of the best I've seen and one of the best executed. Without exaggeration, it is one of the series with which I have laughed the most to the point of crying on the floor (While my father looks at me with a disgusted face XD). Gintoki is one of the best worked characters I have seen, the story has a plot twist brutal and it is one the best things you will see in your life :v.
Tumblr media
1- One piece
One piece... For me one piece has been a complete experience... And it happened to me just like Gintama. I was in the bathroom one day and out of nowhere the chapter 1 appeared on youtube, I saw it and I liked it, it seemed entertaining, then a few days passed and youtube recommended Luffy's fight against Doflamingo, I saw it and said "Whao this It's crazy" and there I decided to watch it, I didn't care that it had so many chapters... And whao... I've never lived a series like this so much. One piece is an adventure, and the base is to go from point A to point B... But GODa has developed it in an impressive way. I'm not saying it's perfect, it has its flaws but the good things it has stand out much more than the bad. Currently I'm up to date with the anime and the manga, and I've watched the animated series about 5 times, the first time by myself, the second time with my two cousins and my uncle, the third time with my parents, the fourth time with my girlfriend and the current one with my best friend... And I still enjoy it like the first time
Tumblr media
To finish I would like to tell you something. One piece fans, Dragon ball fans, Naruto fans, Jujutsu kaisen fans, kimetsu no yaiba fans and fans in general... Please don't fight over which series is better, all of them are amazing in their own way, just enjoy them and share your good experiences with others. If there is something you don't like about your series and you don't agree with the opinions of others... Don't attack, dialogue and be mature when speaking. A hug to those who read this and thanks for reading

Artist Interview
Some time ago I was asked to answer some questions for a Russian community that collects interviews from various fanartists - what a lovely idea! Here’s the Russian translation along with lots of other interesting interviews. Under the cut is the English version.
On the artist
Nickname: Fifi
Date of birth: December 11th
What city are you from? Berlin
What genre in music do you prefer? Are there any favorite bands/singers? Dark electro, industrial, gothic, EBM, new wave, with a little side of metal and rock’n’roll. My favourite band is Rammstein.
The book that made the most impression and why? There’s nothing life-changing, but I have a ritual of reading before bedtime and some books have been great companions, mostly because they are gripping as hell or because they build up a huge world to blissfully get lost in. I really enjoyed In Cold Blood, The Swarm, Out, Memoirs of a Geisha, The Fifth Woman, Into Thin Air, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, the Harry Potter series, Lord of the Rings and ASOIAF.
What are your hobbies besides artistic creativity? Video games, reading up/watching documentaries on things like history, nature, the psychology connected to criminal cases or the obscure niche interest du jour, tasting and trying to cook food from around the world, spending time with close friends and family, planning trips and travelling, board games, being outside in nature, doting on my cat.
What movies (TV series) do you like to watch? Is there something you revise (recommend)? I prefer short thriller/mystery/horror series like Zone Blanche, The Sinner, La Forêt, Penny Dreadful, period dramas like Moon Lovers or The Tudors, movies/series that are funny and thoughtful like Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Intouchables and Better Call Saul, Tarantino movies, oh and movies/series about food!
Favorite anime? Mushishi, Hellsing Ultimate, Samurai Champloo, Kuroko no Basuke, Dragonball Z
Favorite manga? Vagabond, Blade of the Immortal, Naruto, Dragonball, Rookies, Shokugeki no Soma
Favorite pictures, installations? Romanticism paintings, they’re so atmospheric. And traditional artwork from indigenous cultures.
Is there something that you would have trouble parting with? (Some thing, for example) There are things like my old diaries or my hard drive full of photos and drawings, but in general I’m more attached to places than to things.
What are your future plans? Getting better at my job, falling in love, lots of drawings.
On the art
What was the beginning of your passion? Discovering how crayons work as a toddler, I guess.
Do you think the academic base is obligatory and should everyone go through universities to be good masters? I think a profound education can totally polish your technical skills, so the benefits can be great. But art is very individual, and you don’t need university for expressing yourself creatively. When I graduated from high school I thought about studying to become a professional artist, but decided on keeping it a leisure activity for me to unwind and express myself without any pressure.
How long have you been drawing? I’ve been drawing from early childhood.
Tell us about the process of drawing. Where do you start, how do you finish? How much time is spent on drawing? When I’m super lazy, I just use one layer. I start with a rough sketch and refine it by just adding cleaner lines on top and erasing the messy parts. When I’m less lazy I do a rough sketch and a second layer of clean lines on top. During the process I often adjust proportions by cutting, warping and relocating parts of the content. For a comic I first think of a rough plot and draft the dialogue, then make a rough storyboard with page thumbnails. I usually only plan around three pages at a time, never the whole thing in one go. Colouring is another beast entirely. No system there whatsoever, I just put colours on there and hope for the best. Usually a drawing takes me at least two hours, comic pages take up to eight hours. I mostly use the same three brushes all the time.
How did your nickname appear? Fifi-la-fumeuse is a random thing I found in a book about curiosities I bought in Paris a long time ago. It’s basically a vintage doll that was used for educating students about the dangers of smoking during pregnancy. I liked how creepy it looked and the name sounds nice and a little similar to my real name, so I’ve kept it ever since. Malignedaffairs is an allusion to the “forbidden” nature of Itasasu, which was my OTP when I started my blog back in 2012/13. Nowadays I’m finding the name rather corny, but it’s what most people associate with my art, so I’m just keeping it.
What inspires you? Everyday life, my feelings, media, exchanging ideas with people within the fandom.
How do you feel about criticism? Do you criticize other artists? I’m not here for the criticism. My first and foremost goals in posting art on the internet are expressing my feelings, getting in touch with like-minded people and having fun, not necessarily improving my artwork or meeting any achievement goals. I’m grateful for constructive criticism if I respect and trust the person who gives it. I only give criticism if invited to do so.
Do you have your own characters? Or maybe the whole universe? Tell a little about it. No, I don’t have any OCs at all.
How did you come to the Naruto fandom? What kind of heroes do you draw and why them? My ex bf was a big fan of Naruto and always tried to get me into it, but I found it boring and childish. After we broke up though, I felt really lost and started to watch Naruto as a way to feel a little closer to him, and before I knew it I was super into the plot and the characters and then Itachi appeared and the story of the Uchiha brothers struck a very deep chord with me. I’m very much into beautiful, tragic, brilliant but troubled characters who are sweet cinnamon rolls inside, and Itachi and Shisui are like the posterboys for this concept. I feel like they’re the perfect muses for me to give some kind of shape to my ideals of love and mutual respect.
Do you agree with the opinion that national self-perception, as an intellectual factor, is present in the creative process? You’re always influenced by the social environment, the battles and the values you grew up with, and some of that can be determined by your nationality. Themes like identity, society, communication, politics and ideologies are often expressed in art, and if that’s the case you can’t and probably don’t even aim to separate it from national self-perception. I think it’s more present in original art than in fanart though.
What topics worry you and most often are reflected in your work? Belonging, mutual love, loss, sex.
Do you consider drawing to be your recognition in life? Do you plan to continue to devote yourself to this business? It’s an important part of my life and I’m going to do it as long as it feels right, but I won’t pressure myself.
What advice do you have for novice artists? Expect your drawings to look ugly in the beginning and draw all the ugly pictures anyway. Draw whatever attracts you, however silly it may seem. “Art block” means you should lower the pressure on yourself and allow yourself to draw something ugly, silly or uncreative, or even take a break from drawing. Art is not about achievement but about expression. Don’t take it personally when no one seems to appreciate your art right away. Instead actively seek out like-minded people in online communities or in real life, get engaged and show your art to them. Also: flip that canvas!

2D Animation’s Past, Present, and Future
Tumblr media
(Pencil test for Sleeping Beauty) (original video source)
Traditional animation, also called hand-drawn animation, classical animation, cel animation, or by its modern handle, 2D animation, was the main form of animation from the late 19th century up until the creation of the modern computer, when computer-generated animation became the norm. Thanks to animation programs, there’s now a new mode of animating called computer animation, also known as 3D animation, where a figure is rigged to move about in a determined stage, similar to how real-life programs and films are made – the only difference being that the actors are now the animators through a character. Many North American studios had started out with 2D animated movies, but then shifted to focus on creating 3D animated movies thanks to the ease of the technology.

Today in our modern world with many technologies at our hands, 3D animation has become the favored animation style, as proven by how much gross they procure at the box office compared to 2D animated films. Disney has virtually abandoned 2D animated movies, seeing as how their last movie in the medium was The Princess and the Frog released in 2009. The movie did well at the box office, but not as good as other 3D animated movies released since then. Seeing as how Disney has monopolized the animation film industry, anything they do will be copied in other animation studios, most notably American ones: DreamWorks Animation, once a studio where both 2D and 3D animated films were worked on in harmony, hasn’t made a 2D animated movie since 2003, when Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas was released. 2D animation just doesn’t cut it anymore, and is the main reason why North American studios have opted to stop using it entirely in their films. Because of this shift in power, 2D animation can now mainly be seen in T.V. programs and commercials, with many programs being made from independent creators who’re not affiliated with any studio.

Since 2D animated movies have been booted out of the theaters, it seems that 2D animation will – and has been able to – find a home on the T.V. screen. Thanks to many streaming services available, the services are able to host a multitude of programs and movies, included in these would be 2D animated movies and shows, making them accessible to a larger audience. Independent, or indie, creators are creating their own shows and movies in this medium, examples including Cannon Busters, Urbance, Ernest and Celestine, Hullabaloo, among many others. Additionally, television channels such as Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon are creating and hosting majority 2D animated shows, these including Steven Universe, Adventure Time, The Loud House, and SpongeBob SquarePants. Even bigshot Disney, on their channel Disney XD, has been creating and hosting 2D animated shows like Phineas and Ferb and Star vs. the Forces of Evil. While there are T.V. programs that’re rendered in 3D animation – Miraculous Ladybug, Lego Ninjago, etc. – this goes to show that 2D animation isn’t going anywhere, it’s just migrated someplace new.
That being said, many indie creations aren’t able to access a large audience due to needing the economic support of traditional animation fans who want to see the content. Since indie creators are working alone without much support aside from their small teams, they’ve had to resort to creating Kickstarters in order to raise enough money to start working.

On the other side of the ocean, Japan has had a long history of 2D animation, so far as to say that it’s its only animation medium. Astro Boy, originally a manga – Japanese comic book – circulating from 1951 to 1981, was first made into an animated program that ran from 1963 to 1976. While the show has been remade two times, with a third adaptation being made, the first show was the one to set in motion what would become known staples of anime. Since then, innumerable animes have been made for every genre, ranging from robot and mecha anime Gurren Lagann to romantic comedies like Ouran High School Host Club. Anime isn’t just programs either, it boasts many exceptional movies such as Akira, Ghost in the Shell (1995), Ponyo, Wolf Children, and more. One of the biggest anime studios is Studio Ghibli, who can be said to be the Japanese Disney. Studio Ghibli has even collaborated with Disney to promote their movies in the North American venues, most notably with Spirited Away.

American audiences love anime. Everywhere you go, there’s anime: today’s kid’s cartoons are always making references to Sailor Moon or Naruto; Pokémon Go made a giant impact all around the world as people of all kinds are trying to catch Pokémons; millennials and Gen Z’rs keep using slang that relates back to anime, like “You are already dead/Omae wa mou shindeiru;” even Disney has been making references to anime, as seen in their films Frozen and Brave, which feature intrepid female leads, something that can be owed to changing gender attitudes, but ultimately “owe a direct line of thanks to Studio Ghibli’s humble hand-drawn animations of years past”. Anime itself was inspired by old Disney cartoons, so it has now come full circle. But why? Why are American audiences so captivated by anime? For one, anime is now more accessible than ever. In the early 2000’s, there wasn’t readily-available subtitled anime, much less dubbed anime, and what was subtitled was made by fans and hosted on YouTube, or it was a collector’s item that would cost a pretty penny. Thanks to new streaming services, especially ones that focus on animes, anime and manga is a lot more accessible now. Take for example Crunchyroll.com: it’s an American company created by university students that streams anime, manga, and dramas (what we Latinos would call “telenovelas”) for free and offers a paid subscription for an even wider access. The website has anime available in eight languages, and has offices in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chișinău, and Tokyo.
Tumblr media
(Gif from One Piece)
Another reason why anime has been such a hit is that anime is as diverse as Western media: there’s something for everyone, and it’s just a matter of exploring and enjoying the content available. Part of that is the creative liberty authors are given, letting them be the one to decide how long the story will stretch for, an example being Eiichiro Oda, the author of One Piece, an ongoing manga and anime. He’s been stated to willing “die for One Piece,” a level of dedication “manifested throughout his series.” On top of that, the East doesn’t have the same sensibilities as the West, making for a larger range of topics that anime can touch upon that Western shows and films would be too frightened or just plain embarrassed to broach, especially given how nowadays people have many hang-ups about many things, and don’t seem to tolerate differences – just look at the outrage Starbucks caused in 2015 when they rolled out a new holiday cup that was just plain red. Every year since then, Starbucks manages to somehow anger everyone about their holiday cups. Anime isn’t made to reach a wider audience, it just wants to tell a story in its own way, and authors and content-creators should know what it feels like to want to tell a story that you know not everyone is going to understand. The movie Spirited Away blew everyone away at the 75th Academy Awards in 2003 where it beat Disney’s two films Lilo & Stitch and Treasure Planet for Best Animated Feature Film, and because of it, put Japanese animated film under the spotlight. Now everyone is informed that anime is not just for kids but can be a compelling medium for storytelling in films, enough to be able to win an Oscar.
Tumblr media
(Gif from The Artist) (source)
Noticing how 2D animation is falling to grace in the West despite Western audiences clamoring for anime, a 2D animated medium, makes for a very interesting oxymoron. That being said, this could open up new – or old – doors for 2D animation in the entertainment industry. The Artist is a silent, black-and-white film released in 2011, directed by Frenchman Michel Hazanavicius, and it won Best Picture at the 84th Academy Awards. It was the first silent film to win an Oscar for Best Picture since Wings won it in 1927, and the first totally black-and-white film to win Best Picture since The Apartment won it in 1960. The Artist is mentioned here to demonstrate that old formats such as silent films and black-and-white films can still be successful in this modern age, even going so far to be the most awarded film in France. If silent and black-and-white films could make an astounding comeback, even if just for one moment, then surely the same could be said for 2D animated movies. It’s just a matter of someone driven enough to achieve it.
youtube
(Ramen from Gobelins, L'École de L'Image) (also here)
2D animated movies have started to lose their luster in the American film industry. Because of this, 2D animation has seen a new life in T.V. programs and commercials. Unlike their Western counterparts, the East has been producing a vast array of 2D animated anime and films, being able to even win the highest award a film can get in the West, an Oscar. This proves that 2D animation doesn’t have to be a lesser artform in film, because it can be revitalized and recontextualized just as if it were a silent movie being created in the modern age. 2D animation doesn’t have to be a medium of the past and can instead gain some of its grace again as a respected film mode.

MUSIC VIDEO - Flying Lotus - “More” (feat. Anderson.Paak) directed by Shinichirō Watanabe
This track is from the upcoming album ‘Flamagra’ which will be out from WARP on May 24. Flying Lotus and Shinichirō Watanabe (The Animatrix, Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Macross, Space Dandy) have a creative kinship that was cultivated while working on BLADE RUNNER: BLACK OUT 2022. Their mutual respect led to them collaborating on this video.
Watanabe had this to say about their connection - “Flying Lotus’ sound and Anderson Paak’s rap on this track are just incredible. Their work greatly inspired me to direct this music video for them with some of the finest anime talents in Japan. Flying Lotus is such an amazing talent, so it is a great honor to work with Flying Lotus again after our first collaboration on BLADE RUNNER: BLACK OUT 2022. We like working with each other so much that we are already collaborating on another series project of mine called CAROLE & TUESDAY. Our creative team worked really hard to create this video for Lotus and we hope we did justice to this wonderful new track.  Please enjoy!”

What’s your story behind all the things that you like? What I mean is how were you introduced to all the things you find enjoyment out of (video games, anime fanfics etc). How’d you find quote on quote “geek culture” or how did it find you?
The majority of what I enjoy was via introduction by my older sister, or a friend. (This includes music. Nova is always exposing me to new stuff and giving me culture) Or. The old fashioned way, TV. Lol I survived off morning cartoons and cereal. In short, sister, friends, cartoons, fanfics, and CONVENTIONS.
My older sister had played KH1 up to the Deep jungle and then she quit. It was maybe 2004 at the time. But I remembered it well enough, that when my friend showed me KH2 lent his copy that I’m like. Ah hell yeah, I kinda remember this? (KH2 was the first I played, never even saw anything after Deep Jungle until I played KH1 later. But honestly KH2 pretty much gives you a recap, CoM exempt so it was fine. Sora didnt remember, so.. we were on the same page. Lol)
Same thing with Zelda. My first exposure was Majora’s mask, watching my sister play. (She wouldn’t let me play.Older sibling complex.) My first game was Twilight Princess, love that game, it’s beautiful and amazing. Dont @ me lol
Miraculous Ladybug was on Netflix, and I had seen @philsterman01 ’s comic dubs so I was like, yeah, I can finally watch it. (It wasnt what i expected AT ALL, but I still frickin love that cornball of a show. It’s ridiculous and cute.)
Sailor Moon was a huge part of my life, and I still adore it, my First OC was based off that and Tokyo Mew Mew.
Toonami was a huge thing way back when. Yu Yu Hakusho, Cyborg 009, Dragonball/DBZ, a liiiiittle Naruto. There was Fox Kids with Digimon, Shaman King, Winx Club, KidsWB had Yugioh, Pokemon, Cardcaptors, etc. (Adult swim had Inuyasha, Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo and Scry-ed)
A lot of what I enjoyed actually starts at the library. I would ride my bike to the library and check out the limit of Manga and DvDs, I’d read them all and return them the next week and do it all over again… the internet was still foreign to me. Lol
My library didn’t really carry the “POPULAR” manga series, I got stuff like Iron Wok Jan, Skip Beat!, CLAMP stuff (to this day I still don’t understand Clover), Maison Ikkoku, Angelic Layer, but they still had like Fruits Basket, Bleach, Death Note, Chrono Crusade, Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles, etc. Anime was Rurouni Kenshin, X (1999), Tenchi Universe, Ranma ½, Vampire Hunter D, a lot of arbitrary anime I can’t remember but they were weeeeird.
When I was 13 I got a GaiaOnline account, and a FFNet, where I actually met my best friend and current roommate. (We bonded over our love for Hiei.) Lots of new stuff was introduced there.
A coworker of my Mom’s from a past job lended me Trigun, Raxephon, Fullmetal Panic, Generator Gawl, Arc the Lad, Kiddy Grade, Noir.
My mental library is pretty small all things considered. And I’m definitely more of a Casual Geek. I enjoy things in passing.
I think Kingdom Hearts is the thing I’ve held onto the longest, besides Yu Yu Hakusho and Cardcaptor Sakura. But I definitely love it the most.
And Miraculous Ladybug is sticking with me pretty strongly atm too. (But we’ll see. It’s still young)
I missed out on an lot of stuff in high school because I decided to ignore anime and instead get obsessed with Japanese and Korean Pop stars, of which I still need to get rid of my posters 💦💦💦 (they’re just… sitting in the closet lmao) and I was like… a YouTube nut. (I was absorbed into stuff like NigaHiga, Smosh, Mystery Guitar Man, Tobuscus, SMPfilms, Chonny, Bubsbeauty, Shimmycocopuffs, Equals3, stuff like that. Also the time I drew the LEAST and my art stagnated BAD)
I’m still playing catch up, but I’m more interested in creating, working on my OCs, animation/storyboards. Etc. It’s hard to get myself into new stuff cause I know I’ll be sucked in. *stares at Fire Emblem from a safe distance*
It’s also only in the last year or so, (2?) That I’ve actively been a part of a fan community, so it’s still a territory I’m treading lightly. And I’ve kept it to just the KH and ML fandoms. (And maaaaybe the MLP fandom but you didn’t hear that from me. *sweats*)
Long answer is long.
But it’s interesting to think back. Because everything is so VASTLY different now.

Peaches 🍑 &
Anime Dreams ⭐️
I don’t think many people dream of growing up and living in the same city their entire life. Not being able to see different things outside their own world and limiting their world view. Unfortunately it happens, maybe far too often to count. I hoped and prayed that would never happen to me; as I got older and began to travel a bit more I began to realize how much I love the area I’m in, how much I love the Greater Philadelphia area. However, I promised myself that there are a few cities in the US that I MUST travel to and get a feel for, for when I eventually do leave the area that raised me (inevitable due to future career wants). One of those cities was Atlanta Georgia, and what better reason to go to the state where the players play, and people ride out like everyday, than to go to Momocon and celebrate a special birthday with some friends.
The crew that was riding with me were My homie Mike (aka the Wizard Tribble), his girlfriend Gabe (Director, Producer, and 1 half of the horror podcast “The Ghouls Next Door) and my girlfriend Kat (Producer and the other half of “The Ghouls Next Door). We flew in early Friday morning and hit the ground running when we landed in Atlanta. Things moved quickly in the airport. It was wide open, thoroughly organized with no real confusion, which I was not used to from the Philadelphia airport where pigeons would just sit and claim their spot to a seat right beside you in the airport. There was also this air of safety that honestly rubbed my Philadelphian grit in an odd way but I was very appreciative it was noticed. First time in a new city, the first thing anyone wants is some confirmation of safety.
Once we stepped outside, leaving the comfort of the ATL airport that safeguarded us with AC, we were blessed by the loving and excessive sun. Back home in PA the weather consistently flip flops, unsure of what season it wants to be throughout the day let alone the week. Here in Georgia though, in the city of Atlanta, it was bright and sunny all day and week long with a high of 95 and low of about 63 at night. It felt wonderful knowing that there was going to be a steady weather condition to prepare for. The sun was kissing my skin, invoking the power of my melanin–while burning some of my friends. They enjoyed it all the same luckily.
We arrived early to ATL, early enough to call a ride to the nearby diner to get some good southern breakfast in our systems. From the airport to the diner it felt like we were being taken on a small ATL tour. Passing by us was beautiful scenery, birds chirping, healthy, luscious green trees–adding a perfect amount of nature to the populated urban jungle. The letters GT were everywhere for Georgia Tech. A university that seemed to just keep expanding its territory wherever we roamed. The architecture of the city was sleek, not overly futuristic but reminiscent of Philly. It was modern with some buildings taking a design chance on aesthetics; adding in solar panels, wide open glass roof structures, inverted and curved buildings, the chances taken weren’t over the top and did just enough to stand out. Definitely caught my eye.
We finally arrived at a diner close to where we stayed—Silver Skillet Diner, a place that has hosted the likes of Samuel L. Jackson, and Dave Chappelle to name a few. It’s here that my friends and I are able to take Atlanta in more and notice that yep, this may not be Texas but things sure are thiccer (Yes with 2 C’s) down here in the south. We ordered our meals, with everyone of us making sure to get a bowl of grits–mine as a side to my chicken and waffles. Which, were so crispy yet tender. Only made better by the soft waffles and the sticky sweet syrup to combo it all together perfectly. We finish up and pay our bill. Finally we head to our Airbnb.
We get there and are blown away at the place. Nice balcony, modern furniture with a TV in every room, kitchen is dope and has a beautiful island for us to eat at and lean on. The bathrooms are HUGE and the bedrooms are perfectly fitted for 2. To top it off we had access to a summer lounge area that led to a nice pool and fitness center. Place was so good we had to take a instagram video of it. We were in prime location. Downtown Atlanta, right next to the expressway, walking distance from markets and other restaurants, clothing chains and if we didn’t want to walk we could scooter around wherever we wanted to. Yes, I said scooter around. Not like kick push scooter but motorized. Rideshare companies like Lyft & Uber have motorized scooters you can take by going through the same process as you would by ordering a driver except it’s cheaper and you scan a QRcode to activate the scooter. When you’re finished using it, you hop off, pay and just leave it. Drivers come around later in the day and pick up said scooters and recharge them for later use. It was the strangest but coolest thing to see. Definitely had too much fun bending coroners whipping the scooters like I was in rocket power.
After unpacking and taking more IG photos of our Airbnb, it was time to hit the scene and check out the hype around Momocon. What started out as just a “pick up my badge and go” operation turned into a full storm of fun and adventure. When we arrived at Momocon we took it like any other convention and didn’t pay it much attention, the jaded-ness of being a frequent convention goer showing. That is until we got our badges. We got them, so finally we had access to everything the convention had to offer. We rushed the escalators and slid down the rails to do so again until we reached the convention floor. The choices laid out before were the vendors alley, or the gaming hall. We chose the gaming hall for day one.
A concert of echoing laser sounds, dance taps, sirens, alarms, and winning shouts filled the floor and us with it, enveloped in its energy joined the fray. Game after game we played. Putting our bid to even win some the next day. New friends were made, cosplays were stellar, and I got to chill with one of my favorite Pokémon–Blastoise.
We caught wind of a very rare concert happening that night. One my close friend and I have been dying to see. It was the Bytes & Beats Nujabes Tribute concert featuring the NPC Collective, Richie Branson, Asheru, And our favorites–Substantial and Shing02. If you know anything about great anime then you know about Samurai Champloo. An anime that still stylistically, artistically, and musically, holds up and stands the test of time. Those who watched Samurai Champloo leave with a spirit of hypeness and angsty rebellion. That is if they’re the Mugen type. Those like myself who align more like Jin, feel the counter balance energy of flow. The subtle and instinctual vibrations of being in one's element–just riding the current. One of the biggest things to enjoy about Samurai Champloo is its music. Samurai Champloo had a lot of its music crafted by a Japanese DJ named Nujabes. In my eyes, Nujabes is a god among DJ’s. Shoot, a whole generation of young adults and older can thank him for all the music that inspired if not created the genre of chill-hop & lo-fi.
It was the type of music that could soothe the savage beast, could bring you to this place of perfect concentration like you took the limitless pill. The Beats Nujabes crafted was the type of music that makes you think of the perfect weekend drive by sunset cruising the city blocks or mountain roads or the plains of the countryside–windows down with your one arm doing the free flowing roller coaster motion. That feel good–I’m alive vibe. Then topped with the lyrical stylings of artists like Substantial and Shing02, enhanced everything passed the stratosphere and takes the listener to this otherworldly plain of profound worldly views and humbleness. Even with the uptempo joints it felt like every artist that blessed the track, and Nujabes blessing the beat, it just spoke humble confidence. In short, Nujabes was that dude!
Nujabes collaborated with many artists, but the two that he collaborated with and stood out the most were Substantial and Shing02. He worked on joint albums with both (that are historic for chill-hop culture and must listens) but it was with Shing02 specifically that the two together blessed anime fans worldwide as they collaborated on the intro theme song to Samurai Champloo–Battle Cry. A song so enigmatic that just the utterance of its name begins to make my head bop in rhythmic hip hop fashion. Needless to say, we were going to that damn concert!
It was Friday night, we were in Atlanta, we were looking fly, it’s our first time ever at Momocon and quite possibly our first and only time at this Nujabes tribute concert. We were gonna make sure we had a great fucking time. We did everything possible to make sure we got up close and personal to the stage. I may have stuff-armed a person or two….We made sure to take in all the ambience and to not miss a single beat nor lyric felt or heard. We expected greatness and would be damned if we didn’t have a chance to bear witness to it up close and personal.
The concert began and we were taken to a land of hip hop joy, geek excellence, and a dream fulfilled. The concert started at 11pm and didn’t end till about 3am. For those who waited and held out to the very end like my friends and I were treated to a very special rendition of Battle Cry. A new version with verses from every artist that graced the stage prior, and instrumental solos. This shit was absolutely BONKERS and I LOVED every single moment of it. I’ll add, it was made even better that after the show, the artists came out and interacted with the fans. A humble group of men for sure.
Friday was a blockbuster hit in our books. What happened on Saturday though put everything over the top.
Saturday was special. It was Kat’s birthday and all of us were doing our first ever group cosplay. We decided a while back that we’d do the teen titans in casual attire. This was based off the popular artwork of Gabriel Picolo. So, for me that meant I got to embody a character that I along with many others believe I emulate–Cyborg. I dawned the cybernetic blue and steel grey and white face paint, put on a DC Comics Cyborg shirt to rep him even harder, and topped it off with a colorful playstation jacket. Your man was looking fresh out here. To round out our cast of titans was Kat as Raven, Mike as Robin/Nightwing and Gabe as Starfire. Our rule was if we see a Beast Boy, we adopt him for a family photo; and sure enough we did.
We bursted into Momocon towards the backend of a DC vs Marvel Photoshoot. We got a couple pictures taken there then dispersed to get our own in front of the Momocon banner. That’s when it began to happen. It started off quietly by a singular person, then it built into a loud murmur from everyone I see, then it finally erupts into a loud “DOPE COSPLAY CYBORG” from groups of people. Wherever we went I was getting noticed, our team and group cosplay was getting noticed. I don’t think we ever knew it would become such a big deal. I know I didn’t at the time until it was pointed out to me that, every teen titans cosplay done by a group is ALWAYS lacking a Cyborg; everyone but ours. It was a moment that really struck home for me. It began to make more sense as the day progressed. Little kids were coming up to me saying “BOOYAH!” and singing the teen titans theme song. People loved us, they wanted our pictures, put us in videos, stopped what they were doing just to chat with us. It was major. It without a shadow of a doubt drove home the message to me that representation matters. I know some out there will say it’s not super important but after Momocon, after seeing little black boys and girls smile with joy and sing teen titans with me, after they get excited by the utterance of the word booyah by another black character, that families start showing me off to their kid cosplayers and other adult cosplayers of color pause everything because they NEED to take a photo with you...you just can’t ignore how important that is. To be able to see yourself as a hero. To see oneself as greater than for once, when most of–if not all of society says you can only fit into these certain boxes. To see someone else that looks like you in a positive light; that’s all it takes to break a negative cycle, that’s all it takes to create another hero. For a small moment in time, I was inspiring to those around me; and I hope that the sliver of inspiration that I sparked stays ignited in those I met. I know it surely will with me.
But I digress.
Beyond the massive success of our group cosplay, beyond the elation and fun had for Kat’s birthday, the icing on the cake was being able to meet a famous cosplayer by the name of KieraPlease. This was after an intense dance dance revolution session in which I sat and recorded video and got exhausted looking at everyone else go. It was pure happenstance, which resulted into pure happiness when we finally met. I don’t get starstruck often but I must say, words failed me for our brief interaction. I saw her, saw my friends, and shot my shot at a possible chat and photo opportunity for us all. I took the shot and it went in (KOBE!!). After the picture she hugged us all and had a nice conversation with the Ghouls (Kat & Gabe) which I’m sure made their day if the hug didn’t already. It’s great to note that as a team, we have this cosplay thing down well. When a pro says you got it, you freaking got it! More so, it was better to finally meet someone your used to seeing on a cellphone or laptop screen. A living breathing tangible person, who quite honestly is living her best life fully and truly can be looked at as a symbol of positivity; a role model even. Just like that, day two was in the books.
So, I think I brought you along far enough on my experience in ATL. Detailing 2 key days. Now let me change things up on you a bit and give you my overall thoughts of Atlanta and Momocon as a whole.
Atlanta itself is a hotbed of culture. On the weekend we went, that weekend alone had a bevy of major events happening all weekend long. There was Momocon, Caribbean festival and parade, a food festival, and Stone Mountain fireworks and light show to name a few. As one of our lyft drivers said, ATL is a hotbed of culture because it is made up of a lot of different cultures and people from around the US. Atlanta has its own swagger but it is the culmination of others that has shaped the way it is today. Atlanta is a Transplant City. Many people are moving to Atlanta because of the opportunities that present itself. From music, TV, movies, overall entertainment and broadcasting, the warm weather, the great food, the architecture, the various modes of transportation (ONE TIME FOR THE SCOOTERS), the cheaper housing, and generally you get more out of your earned dollar; why people move there makes sense. And like all major cities Atlanta has its issues, shoot the state of Georgia alone is a bit problematic depending on where you slide politically. But my time spent there will be one for the history books. It’s definitely a place worth traveling to again. Next time I go, I’ll be sure to do more exploring. I didn’t get a chance to travel the halls of Cartoon Network (IF ANYONE ONE IN THE HR DEPARTMENT IS READING THIS, HIRE ME PLEASE) so that’s reason enough for me to go back. That and I didn’t get to try some of Hattie B’s Nashville hot chicken or the slutty vegan sandwich. There’s always next time though.
As for Momocon….IN-FREAKING-CREDIBLE! Momocon has that extra something. That nudge to taking it up one more notch to make it great. No, it is not as big as DragonCon and maybe it won’t get the same recognition or acclaim but Momocon is a phenomenal con. Momocon brought me back to 2014, when I first started going to conventions. My first one at the time was Otakon and to this day I don’t think any other con will hold as special of a spot in my heart as Otakon. But Momocon, Momocon was dangerously close to taking that spot. Which lets me know and hopefully you, the reader, now that it’s just that damn good! The crowd size of the convention is comparable to say the Greater Philadelphia comic con. Meaning there’s a large crowd and over a thousand things to do but you never have to fear about missing out on something. You can and will get to everything you want if you have patience. The event staff from security to the PR and press team were absolutely amazing. All were easy to talk to and informative, helpful and never overbearing. What truly made Momocon as great as it is in my eyes, is that it at its core it remained an anime and gaming convention. It wasn’t a comic convention with anime sections, it was an anime and gaming convention that accepted comic lovers just as much as it did its anime and gaming fans. Anime and gaming is my bread and butter, it’s what got me into this geeky, blerd, pop-culture world I exist in currently. Momocon stayed true to that core value. The sheer fact they had Substantial and Shing02 performing live in concert said more than enough for me. Momocon you are in fact, a real one.
Atlanta….I’ll be back in the future. Whether that be for work or pleasure, or hell maybe to be a transplant myself and live there. All this kid from the burbs of Philly has to say left is…
Peace up, A-Town down.
Much love,
– Isaiah Luck aka Broku

Rock out with 15 Years of Samurai Champloo!
15 years ago today, Samurai Champloo burst onto the anime scene. Its anachronistic mix of hip-hop aesthetic, chanbara action, and slick animation made it an instant classic. Director Shinichiro Watanabe has continued to bring his own unique vision to more and more titles since then, but the Edo-period piece remains his most down-to-earth yet... literally.
As with anything Watanabe creates, a lot of different visionaries and inspirations contributed to the entire package. From classic Japanese artists to modern musicians, they're all a part of why we love Samurai Champloo. Today, as we look back on the decade and a half since (and forward to Watanabe's other work), we're taking a moment to investigate some of the individual assets that helped put together the bigger picture.
As with anything Watanabe makes, we can only ever hope to scratch the surface when it comes to his collaborators and ideas. Any other favorite creators or themes you've noticed in the series? Let's keep the conversation rolling in the comments to celebrate the show's longevity!
  Music: Nujabes
The late Jun Seba began his career in music as a record store owner, before kicking off his own indie label in 1998. By 2003 he was creating tracks under the name Nujabes, wowing crowds around the world with his nostalgic blends of hip-hop and jazz.
Nujabes contributed an impressive number of tracks to the Samurai Champloo soundtrack, including the iconic opening theme "Battlecry" (a collaboration with Shing02). This was in addition to his own prolific output. Sadly, Seba's life was cut tragically short in a car crash in 2010. Several albums were released posthumously, and a massive concert was held this past February on the ninth anniversary of his passing.
Head on over to Spotify for more music from Nujabes, including the full Luv(sic) Hexalogy.
  Music: Fat Jon
Watanabe loves to come West to find musical talent for his projects, and Samurai Champloo was no exception. Another prolific contributor to the show's soundtrack was Ohio-born Jon Marshall, a.k.a. Fat Jon the Soul Physician. The rapper and producer is another major multitasker, serving as a member of Five Deez, 3582, Rebel Clique, and Beautiful Killing Machine.
Fat Jon's many contributions to the Samurai Champloo soundtrack include "How You Feel" and "1st Samurai," the latter a collaboration with the aforementioned Nujabes. He's still making music to this day, which you can check out on his official website, ample soul.
  Music: Force of Nature
Rounding out Samurai Champloo's Big 3 (or is that Big 4?) contributors—though by no means the last of the musicians attached to the project—are Force of Nature. The Japanese duo consists of KZA and DJ Kent, a duo bringing together their talents, unique styles, and massive vinyl collection together to create lo-fi beats to watch anime to.
You'll recognize their sound in tracks like "Just Forget" and "Same Ol' Thing," blending calm vintage tracks with more modern dance and hip-hop beats. They also teamed up with Tsutchie (formerly of Shakkazombie, featured in Cowboy Bebop's Session XX) for the Samurai Champloo soundtrack album Masta.
Fans wanting more of Force of Nature will reach a dead end attempting to access their website... but their MySpace is still up and running with some sample tracks.
    Art: Kazuto Nakazawa
Fans of Kill Bill will recognize Kazuto Nakazawa's style at work in Samurai Champloo. The artist pulled double duty as both character designer and chief animator, adding to the show's distinctive look and wild chanbara-inspired action scenes.
Nakazawa's work on Kill Bill—the anime sequence depicting O-Ren Ishii's back story—premiered just one year prior to Champloo. In that same year, he did key animation for two short films in The Animatrix: "Kid's Story" and "A Detective Story." You'll also see his animation at work in the video for Linkin Park's "Breaking the Habit."
  Inspiration(?): Spike Spiegel
Perhaps we should say "anti-inspiration," because Watanabe's goal was to create a character who was Spike Spiegel's polar opposite.
The character of Mugen—the rude, reckless member of our lead trio—was dreamed up as Watanabe was working on the Cowboy Bebop movie, Knockin' on Heaven's Door. The idea was to create an antithesis to the space cowboy: where Spike was mature, capable, and cool, Watanabe wanted someone "young and a little stupid." We're not sure if he succeeded in making Mugen not cool, though... in spite of (or perhaps because of) his wild style, viewers love him.
Funnily enough, Steve Blum served as the dub voice of both Spike and Mugen.
  Inspiration: Historical Luminaries
Samurai Champloo pulls a lots from Japan's Edo Period; but if you're looking for historical accuracy, you'll be either very disappointed or extremely confused. If the slew of R&B and hip-hop artists populating the soundtrack didn't already clue you in, the series loves anachronisms and prefers entertainment over accuracy.
That's not to say you won't get a tiny bit of a history lesson as you watch. Take Fuu's unexpected modeling job for Hishikawa Moronobu, one of the first artists to popularize the style. (He may have taken some liberties with her likeness, but she sure didn't seem to mind!) They also have a run-in with Alexander Cartwright, the man credited by some with inventing the modern sport of baseball. Just be sure to take everything you see with a huge shaker of salt; we're guessing Cartwright didn't challenge random samurai to baseball games, though we could be wrong.
What are your favorite things about Samurai Champloo? Let's keep celebrating in the comments!

Current Writing Playlist
Taking a break from "A Clear and Perfect Surface" for a few days to work on some other stuff. This post is just a list of songs that I've been listening to recently that have been a major inspiration for my writing playlist:
Florence and the Machine- "Patricia"
High as Hope is probably one of her most sedate albums to date, but I love the warm passion in this song. It reads like a love letter between woman urging them forward into the bold wonder of a new romance. I love it just for that last stanza, the way it so dreamily drifts off into something distant and longing.
I drink too much coffee and I think of you often In a city where reality has long been forgotten Are you afraid? 'Cause I'm terrified
But you remind me that it's such a wonderful thing to love It's such a wonderful thing to love It's such a wonderful thing to love It's such a wonderful thing to love It's such a wonderful thing...
Hozier - "As It Was"
Just hauntingly beautiful, made all the more lovely for how the simple musical accompaniment hides the intense emotion of the lyrics. "But your love was unmoved" is just a potent line. He's easily one of the best lyricists of his generation.
Lissie - "The Habit"
An anthem for love stories that don't end happily but continuously draw us back to the start of the toxic circle.
James Horner - "The Gravel Road"
The Village easily has one of the most beautiful soundtracks in modern film. This piece is one of my favorites. The violin is just captivating.
Art Garfunkel - "All I Know"
Beautifully sung ode to the helplessness of difficult love.
KT Tunstall - "Another Place to Fall"
An acidic take on love stumbling to its knees and finding the strength to get back up.
Minmi - "Shiki no Uta"
The end title theme for the anime Samurai Champloo. Worth listening to anytime, though. It's a beautiful song.
歌手:乔维怡 (Qiao Weiyi)- 几度花落时 (Where Have All the Flowers Fallen?)
One of my absolute favorite Chinese ballads. Just achingly wistful and beautiful even through the language barrier. (Apologies if the translation is off - the original video doesn't include the English names, so I had to use Google's translator.)
Bjork - "All is Full of Love"
One of my favorites by her. Just fills you with indescribable emotion.
Hozier - "No Plan"
I am 90% sure this song is about man trying to talk a woman he loves into having sex with him on a picnic blanket somewhere in an empty field. I can tell you that if a man sang this song to me under a starry night sky, he wouldn't have to do much talking after.

Edit: So amazingtoysha asked me advice for writing in a message which I posted a little while ago...and responding to the question gave me limited space apparently. So here is the full post of all the advice I wanted to give!
“Hiya! Thank you very much for reading Finding the Four Eyed Samurai. I am glad you enjoyed it thus far. Oh! Well...I’m far from a professional. My fanfiction, if it were a story unaffiliated with Samurai Champloo, would still break so many guidelines of professional published work. Perspective switching between Mugen and Fuu, purple prose, grammar, info dumping... My sins are extensive. This story is more like spewing out my heart onto the internet for fans that enjoy it :) You probably have seen the improvement over my 6 year period on fanfiction. I too am learning. However, if you are talking about just creatively writing for fun, practice, to send a message or even to just fulfill an inner fan, maybe I can give some advice. Some of the things I write will most definitely be things you already know but I’ll list them anyway. Since you mentioned you have trouble putting things into words, rather than plot points or characters, I’ll focus on that. 1. Start with small details and build up slowly. My writing process is actually very disjointed. I can not for the life of me write a story in order. I write all character dialogue first and fill in around it. When I first write a scene, I will simply start with something like: “She walked through the marketplace.” That’s it. Boring right? I will leave it for a bit if I’m stuck and move along to continue the scene in simple terms. When i come back, I start to imagine more if I were in that environment. This is where I think of the five senses. What would she smell, see, hear, touch or even...taste(?) lol. But when writing a scene, I also try to think about the mood it sets. If the character is feeling happy, the crowds will be rambunctious, the lights bright and the sights they see are fascinating. If they are hungry, it would be the smell of food that would command their attention. If the character is tired, the clamor and loud voices would grate on their nerves and the lights would be blinding. In the chapter I’m currently writing, Kyoto is much like Edo in that it is crowded and always lively. But because of the last chapter’s events...she can’t take notice of this energy. Without Mugen beside her, the crowds only make her feel more alone. So not only does the atmosphere set the mood, but a character’s mood can help you pinpoint what you should be describing in the environment. 2. Study! Read and read and read some more. This is advice I should listen to... Published novels, and sometimes even fanfiction can help you get a grasp on the flow of a story. You’ll also pick up words or descriptions that you wouldn’t have used otherwise. You’ll start to notice how the sound of a word in English can hold great weight. Think of how it comes off in the sentence: She scratched off the wallpaper until she could see the wood beneath it. She clawed at the wallpaper until she could see the wood beneath it. “Scratched” can be used in so many contexts. Is she redecorating? Is she curious what is underneath? “Clawed at” makes it feel frantic, like she is searching for something in a frenzy or perhaps is furious and clawed it off out of anger. It applies an uneasy feeling without stating it outright. There is a common phrase among writers. “Show, don’t tell.”  Show the character is upset through the clenching of their fists, the quiver of their lips. Dont just say “She was upset.” Personally, I am a HUGE HUGE breaker of this >.< But it is a very important rule if you wish to get better at describing. 3. More studying!!! As much as every writer will tell you to read, I think it is good to look at visual forms of entertainment too. For example, if I had only watched Samurai Champloo as my basis for Tokugawa culture, my view would’ve been severely limited. If you want to write a samurai drama: watch black and white chanbara films, watch modern day shows about Japan, documentaries, look at photographs or paintings, read comics, and even play video games like Tenchu or Onimusha that will give that vibe of the time period. Reading is good for molding thoughts into words. But if you’re writing about an environment you are unfamiliar with, you need to SEE it before you can describe something believable. I had watched a lot of Japanese movies and played a lot of Japanese videogames before writing my fanfic. It helped so much. 4. Take notes.  A lot of friggin’ notes.
Sometimes the right wording just won’t come to you when you put time aside to sit in front of your laptop or a notebook trying to write it all in one go. Like I said before, I don’t write in order at all. Some people can. And some can’t. I keep a notebook and pencil by my bed in case I have any dreams. I even carry one in my purse wherever I go. Sometimes a sentence or a really good word will just hit you all of a sudden. If you are writing a very long story, you will make tons of notes and will find you won’t even use half of them until you’re in way later chapters. An example for me was in the last posted chapter. I was writing chapter 28 or so when parts of this line popped into my head out of nowhere: “To him, she smelled of fresh rain and sweet spring flowers. To her, he reeked of sake and the cheap perfume from the whore he’d bought.”
At the time, I had gotten caught in rainstorm. And I always liked the scent of rain a lot. This made me think of how much I hate the scent of perfume since it makes my nose hurt. This contrast unveils both of their feelings. Intoxicated Mugen adores her while Fuu is disgusted by his recent behavior. One little thought and bam! Jotted it on paper and then put it into Chapter 34. An idea can come from literally anywhere. So write it down and save it for later! 5. Keep an open mind. It is good to know where your story is going by the end or you’ll wind up lost halfway through. Despite that, don’t reject new ideas that come to you. My story was originally going to be 26 chapters. If I had pushed out all the crazy side stories my mind concocted, then it would’ve lost so much of what readers enjoy about it. Don’t be afraid to make your characters go through and overcome struggle. If there is a sweet scene that will help further a relationship, put it in. Build up ideas and cut out extraneous things later. 6. Know that it will not be perfect. It will be far from perfect. Story might be decent. Description might even be bad. Maybe it’s the reverse. But that is okay. If you’re a beginner writer, Fanfiction is a great way to start, in my opinion. While you are writing preexisting characters, it is like a studying exercise. You can build around them, and try to understand why the characters are the way that they are or what drives them. This can help in the future when designing your own characters and world in which they inhabit. 7. Share your story! Don’t hide it! Some will compliment you and others will criticize you. Sure, almost everyone on fanfiction isn’t some paid professional. But the feedback will really help. It will push you. A nice compliment will make your day. A bad one will push you to do better. When publishing a book, you have to write a whole manuscript and pay for editors. And if you’re beginning, you probably won’t even want to start that process. That’s why writing fanfiction as a form of practice can allow you to share what you put your heart into instead of locking away your story to a forgotten file on your computer. 8. All that matters is that you are trying, learning and will gradually get better. Almost everything in life does not come easy. The idea you have for a story is 10% of the work, while sculpting that idea through words is 90% of it. My Samcham fanfic when I started was...god...ughhhhhhh. Sometimes I still cringe XD However, I know that it helped me learn so much, not just about vocabulary, storytelling and history, but also about myself. 9. Don’t stop writing. You will get days, weeks, maybe months where you might not feel like continuing it. You might even drop the story altogether. But if you stop, so does your journey in learning. Press forward. If you post the beginning chapter and get only a few comments or barely any views, and it feels like not enough, know that people will only come to read the story you put so much effort into if you continue writing it! 10. Be proud when you look back on your previous work. As you discover your own voice and your storytelling evolves, it might be painful to look back at your earlier writing. Instead of punching yourself, laugh it off and realize how far you have come. All it takes is one step. Don’t give up :) Hope at least one thing I said can help you a little on your journey of creative writing ^^ ~RyukyuanxSunflower AKA Fenrir’s Lockhart P.S: If you need help with description or plot points, there are many beta readers on fanfiction willing to help. And although I tend to disappear often, shoot me a message on fanfiction about your story or something you’re stuck on and I’ll try my best to help!
