Full context for each beneath the cut, because the poll options have character limits and the Epics are LONG:
King of diamonds, king of spades / Hades was king of a kingdom of dirt / Miners of mines, diggers of graves / They bowed down to Hades who gave them work / And they bowed down to Hades who made them sweat/Who paid them their wages and set them about / Digging / And dredging / And dragging the depths of the earth / To turn its insides out (Vermont, Concept Album, NYTW)
And he bowed down to no one, below or above / 'Til the arrow of Eros struck him in the heart / And the king of the underworld fell in love / With a woman who walked in a garden (London)
And the earth warmed over in the dead of winter / The stillborn spring lay cold beneath / Summer gave a stormy sermon / Autumn walked in its wake like a wreath / And the people moved like weather patterns / Looking for shelter, looking for warmth / Helter-skelter, the four winds scattered / The scavengers over the ravaged earth (Vermont)
And a million feet that fell in line / And stepped in time with Hades' step / And a million minds that were just one mind / Like stones in a row / As stone by stone / Row by row / The river rose up (Concept Album, NYTW)
Hades is king of the scythe and the sword / He covers the world in the color of rust / He scrapes the sky and scars the earth / And he comes down heavy and hard on us (Concept Album, NYTW)
And the sun rose and fell in his chest as he held her / He felt the earth moving without and within / And there were no words for the way that he felt / So he opened his mouth and he started to sing (London)
The heart of the king is a tinderbox / That he has to keep under lock and key / That it not catch fire inside of his chest / 'Cause a lover's desire is a mutiny / A lover's desire is a wilderness (Vermont)
In the dark of the mine, he is trying to fill / The hole that his lover has left in his arms / With the silver and gold / He can have and hold / Not half, but whole / All to himself (Broadway previews, with some lines from Vermont)

Specifically named workers pre-Broadway? I need to know everything right now-
A workshop version of Way Down Hadestown had these lyrics:
Welcome to the skeleton crew! / Welcome to the chain gang, kid / Lemme introduce you to / The members of the working dead / Old Jack Hammer! Mister Miner / Wandering forever in the catacombs / Working on a hole to China / Diggin’ up them dino bones / Way down . . .
Sweatshop Sally! Missus Miller! / Workin’ in the cellar where the sun don’t shine / Sad-eyed little Cinderella / Sweeping up the ashes of the summertime / Used to be one a the boss’s pets / Now she’s just another stiff / One night in the boss’s bed / And a lifetime on the graveyard shift / Way down . . .
They’re a cool insight at who the workers are and why they are there, but it took away from the way they are monolithicized and the loss of identity so Anaïs changed them. You can find a little more discussion of them in Working on a Song!

Guilt in its entirety
So I saw this towards the end of Working on a song and it completely tore out my heart, now you all must suffer with me. It is the original-original ending song.
Tumblr media
It’s so- ow. It’s beautiful and absolutely devastating. There’s a certain angst that makes my angst hungry heart full.
Additionally this cut verse from If it’s true-
Tumblr media
OW. He’s a poet at heart even with his pain. Also it’s yet another reference to his myth/canon(?) death of being torn apart… only here it’s more emotional and personal and wanting for it. Which hhhhhhgh it hurts so good.
Bonus-
Tumblr media
Persephone is not his mom. But it also makes sense for her to have the part because having Calliope for one song doesn’t really make sense. Also don’t be embarrassed those are good- I like how the older drafts really have a lot more mention of the other gods? It sort of fleshes out the universe even if they’re not in final versions.

thinking about how in chant ii (nytw version) hades calls orpheus "son" while persephone calls eurydice "sister" and this is actually a thing throughout the show, nytw and broadway alike - persephone and hermes call everyone "brother" or "sister", while in why we build the wall hades calls the workers "my children"
then in working on a song, in the notes for why we build the wall, anaïs mitchell talks about her arabic lit professor and how she hated hosni mubarak and expressed nostalgia for former egyptian president gamal abdel nasser and then anaïs provides this quote from the professor:
"what did nasser call the citizens? brothers and sisters! and what does mubarak call us? my children."
and anaïs mentions that this is probably where the "my children" language in why we build the wall comes from
but i think this quote ultimately impacted all the gods and the language they use throughout the show

OKAY APPARENTLY i've been mishearing the lyrics of Chant this whole time??? I thought Orpheus was saying "as black gold flows in the world down below, enter dark clouds roll in the one up above"
but it's his black gold and her dark clouds???

when hozier said "if im a pagan of the good times, my lover's the sunlight" and when hozier said "no grave can hold my body down, i'll crawl home to her" and when hozier said "i slithered here from eden just to sit outside your door" and when hozier said "heaven is not fit to house a love like you and i" and when hozier said-

🥺????? I love his wave with all my heart and the context makes it even more endearing. The direction from cocky to sensitive dork is 100% the right choice. Also !!! Moment of audience acknowledgement - the fact that they’re all somewhat aware is so - yes.
I know a lot of people are attached/like older versions of him. I can’t speak as I haven’t seen them but I love the current iteration. It’s fascinating to learn about how she had spent years trying to make him likeable?? Not cocky/arrogant ( it to say that cannot be done in a likable way) and not just “you love me because the narrative says you have to.”

satyrs serve as demigod protectors, of which their job is to provide safe passage to camp half-blood. which could very well mean that every camper is at least aware of the 'consensus' song!! i really hope the shows takes the opportunity to make it an ongoing joke throughout the series. just anytime anyone refers to a disagreement, a nearby camper will start clapping and singing off-key lmao
