Small Steps, Big Impact: Your Guide to Living Sustainably
Climate change can feel like an overwhelming issue, but the good news is, everyone can make a difference! Even small changes in our daily lives can significantly reduce our carbon footprint and contribute to a healthier planet. Here are some actionable tips to get you started on your sustainability journey:
At Home:
Power Down: Electronics continue to consume energy even on standby. Get in the habit of turning off lights, appliances, and electronics when not in use. Power strips with on/off switches make this even easier!
Embrace Energy Efficiency: Swap traditional incandescent bulbs for energy-efficient LEDs. Consider switching to energy-star rated appliances when yours reach the end of their lifespan.
Wash Smarter: Launder clothes with cold water whenever possible and air-dry them instead of using the dryer.
Thermostat Tweaks: Adjust your thermostat a few degrees in summer (up) and winter (down) to save energy on heating and cooling.
On the Go:
Think Green Transportation: Walk, bike, or use public transport for errands whenever possible. If you must drive, carpool or choose fuel-efficient vehicles.
Reduce, Reuse, Rethink: Carry reusable shopping bags and water bottles to avoid single-use plastics. When buying new items, prioritize quality over quantity and consider pre-owned options.
Mindful Consumption: Avoid impulse purchases and focus on buying items you truly need and will use for a long time.
Food Choices Matter:
Reduce Meat Consumption: Meat production has a significant environmental impact. Consider incorporating more plant-based meals into your diet.
Buy Local & Seasonal: Locally sourced produce reduces transportation emissions and often tastes better! Seasonal fruits and vegetables are fresher and more sustainable.
Plan Your Meals: Planning meals helps minimize food waste, which contributes to greenhouse gas emissions.
Be an Advocate:
Spread Awareness: Talk to friends and family about your sustainability efforts and encourage them to join You
Support Sustainable Businesses: Do your research and choose to support companies committed to sustainable practices.Stay Informed: Educate yourself about climate change and environmental issues.
Remember, every small step counts! By incorporating these tips into your daily routine, you can make a positive impact on the planet while inspiring others to do the same. Let's work together to build a more sustainable future for generations to come!

“The European Union has finalized a law that will ban the trade of commodities associated with deforestation and forest degradation.
On Dec. 6, the European Council, Parliament and Commission struck a preliminary deal to adopt the deforestation-free regulation, proposed by the European Commission in 2021. The Parliament and the Council will still have to formally approve the agreement.
Once adopted, the law will be the first of its kind in the world to tackle global deforestation by banning deforestation and forest degradation, regardless of whether it’s legal or not, from supply chains.
“The EU is a large consumer and trader of commodities that play a substantial part in deforestation — like beef, cocoa, soy and timber,” said Marian Jurečka, the environment minister of the Czech Republic, which negotiated on behalf of the 27 EU member countries.
The EU is responsible for 16% of tropical deforestation associated with international trade, second only to China.
“Protecting the environment around the world, including forests and rainforests, is a common goal for all countries and the EU is ready to take its responsibility,” Jurečka said.
Under the law, companies will be required to issue a due diligence statement verifying that goods they import into the EU market don’t come from deforested land and have not led to forest degradation anywhere in the world after Dec. 31, 2020. Operators and traders will also have to prove that the goods are legal by complying with all relevant applicable laws in force in the country of production.
The law covers commodities like palm oil, cattle, timber, coffee, cocoa, rubber and soy, as well as manufactured products like beef, chocolate, furniture and printed paper. The EU has identified these commodities as the main agricultural drivers of deforestation...
Some green groups have lauded the decision to adopt the law, with WWF [World Wildlife Fund] calling it “groundbreaking.”
“We have made history with this world-first law against deforestation,” said Anke Schulmeister-Oldenhove, senior forest policy officer at WWF’s European policy office. “As a major trading bloc, the EU will not only change the rules of the game for consumption within its borders, but will also create a big incentive for other countries fueling deforestation to change their policies.”
By requiring companies to invest in addressing deforestation and forest degradation in their supply chains as a requirement for access to the EU market, the law will raise the bar for the agricultural sector, according to Helen Bellfield, policy director at U.K.-based NGO Global Canopy.
“This is very welcome news for the world’s forests,” she said.” -via Mongabay, 12/7/22

The Crown Princess at WWF's autumn meeting
On Oct. 5, the Crown Princess attended the World Wildlife Fund's council meeting and autumn gathering at Erstaterrassen in Stockholm.
Tumblr media
WWF's board of trustees gathered at the meeting, and the theme for the day was Forward towards a sustainable business life! Secretary General Gustaf Lind also presented the awards: "Environmental Hero of the Year", "Marie-Claire Cronstedt's Prize", and "Panda Book of the Year".
Environmental Hero of the Year
Environmental Hero of the Year 2023 was awarded to the influencer Therése Lindgren.
The jury's motivation: "On her sustainability journey, Therése Lindgren has stopped at several stops in her life, from make-up and beauty to mental illness and animal protection - all the way to the final station with a sustainable lifestyle."
Comment from Saga: Therése is one of, if not the biggest, influencer in Sweden and it became national news when she changed her approach to collaborations and working with brands and companies. Basically, she now has a list of sustainability requirements and if the brand or company don't meet them, she won't work with them or promote them.
Marie-Claire Cronstedt's Prize
Researcher Elin Röös was awarded the Marie-Claire Cronstedt Prize.
The jury's motivation: "For her pioneering research and strong commitment to spreading knowledge about the environmental and climate impact of food, and for the sustainable use of animals and nature."
Panda Book of the Year
The Panda Book of the Year 2024 award was awarded to photographer Claes Grundsten for the book "Archipelago".
The jury's motivation: "Claes Grundsten allows us to get close to the wilderness of the archipelago, both emotionally and concretely, in a way that only exceptional artistic skill combined with great outdoor experience can achieve."

To the Putin dictatorship, any group which tells the truth about Russia these days is "undesirable".
Russia can't hide its ecocide in Ukraine which was put into spectacular focus by its destruction of the Kakhovka dam. Though Russia is also busy creating environmental problems within its internationally recognized borders.
Moscow has labelled the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) "an undesirable organization," saying the independent nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the environment and protecting endangered species was "being used as a facade to carry out projects that create threats to the country's security in the economic sphere." The move, which follows a decision by Russia in March 2022 to label the organization a "foreign agent," forces the nonprofit to cease all activities in Russia. According to a statement from the Russian Prosecutor-General’s Office on June 21, the WWF posed a threat to economic development, specifically citing activities it said were meant to hinder Russia's extraction of natural resources from the Arctic.
The Kremlin doesn't appreciate the WWF bringing to light Russia's environmentally unsound practices in its fossil fuel industries.
WWF campaigns against oil and natural gas industries were aimed at “shackling” Russia’s economic development, the statement added. The Prosecutor-General's Office also said it believes that the fund is developing restrictions that may become the basis for "transferring the Northern Sea Route in the direction of the U.S. exclusive economic zone” though the WWF’s website makes no mention of such a project.
In other words, just more paranoid bullshit from the Kremlin.
The fund, which works closely with the United Nations, operates large environmental advocacy programs for many causes, including deforestation, freshwater preservation, and endangered species protection. The "undesirable organization" law, adopted in 2012, was part of a series of regulations pushed by the Kremlin that have forced scores of nonprofit and nongovernmental organizations to halt operations as the government stifles civil society. The Prosecutor-General's Office statement also notes that WWF, formerly known as the World Wildlife Fund, provided support to Russian nonprofit organizations, such as Friends of the Baltic and Sakhalin Environmental Watch. The two organizations are included in Russia's register of so-called foreign agents and were found liable for uncoordinated, unauthorized climate protests. The move against the WWF comes after Russia shut down Greenpeace, another major environmental NGO, in May. Also labeled as “undesirable,” Greenpeace was similarly accused of intervening in internal affairs.
Somebody needs to declare Putin "undesirable" for the planet and shut him down for good.
