In the last salty asks post I unintentionally went on a tangent in the notes about how JRO wrote religious characters which is like actually something I want to bring up on its own so like
Is it just me or does JRO have some real misses when it comes to writing religious characters? Not like every religious character is badly written or evil, but like... several of the ones that are fall into really bad or unflattering/shallow stereotypes? It's hard to put my finger exactly on why I feel that way bc he does write some actually good religious characters (aka Cyclonus).
For example, characters like the Functionist Council and Star Saber are fine to me because I'm like. Well Functionism being religious in origin makes sense, it's an interesting interplay of how religion influences the state/how the state leverages religion to bend the populace to its own whims. Religious bad guys =/= all religious people bad. Star Saber is just some random zealot that wasn't meant to be that deep at all, and eh the Inquisition-type religious zealot can be cool even if it's just the vibes of it.
But then there's stuff like... Tyrest being a normal, rational, not particularly religious guy until he gets shot with a bullet that gives him brain damage, causing him to start ranting about Cyberutopia and thinking God is personally talking to him in his brain...? Like, idk, was it really the best idea for an antagonist to go "he is evil because he got brain damaged against his will w/o even knowing what really happened to him and also because he's brain damaged he's now literally delusional and became a religious (and genocidal) maniac." It comes off as really bad taste/not thinking the implications through as far as how it reflects on religious people (bc the whole "religious people are literally delusional and stupid to think that their gods could possibly exist" thing is tired and offensive). Not to mention kind of ableist w/ the whole "oh he became evil bc he got shot in the brain and now there's literally something wrong with his mind."
(Doesn't help that the MTMTE logbooks revealed that the original idea for Tyrest was to have his killswitch be about trying to identify and execute all of the criminals/"guilty people" on Cybertron, basically an extension of his role as Chief Justice which makes so much more sense and is way more interesting and compelling???? Certainly better than (gets brain damaged) "Ah I'm now going to genocide all cold constructs because God told me to")
And then Drift with spectralism which...which... basically the extent of that whole religion is the name of a single festival (the Lost Light festival the eponymous ship was named after), and some stuff about face/body paint and colors having spiritual symbolism, then the Guiding Hand/Primus stuff that's also shared with Primalism. But then you have Drift who's the main representative of this religion basically being written as a phony who doesn't even believe in the shit coming out of his mouth. Or if his beliefs are sincere, the way he acts is basically just "oooooh, I sense unclean vibes and read into the energy of the universe" which is played for laughs or mocked by the other characters most of the time. And Drift's character is written so inconsistently (and the general religious worldbuilding so one-dimensional) that it's hard to tell if Drift is supposed to be read as some kooky fake hippie type or if he's genuinely a representation of Spectralism in general. Like, idk, the best JRO could come up for for building a religion was "they wear certain colors and patterns on them and vaguely talk about sensing energy from the universe?" It literally feels like baby's first fictional religion or like, religion as understood by a non-religious/atheist person who sees religion as nothing more than an aesthetic or some quirky rituals.
I'm not saying the story had to be about religion or have religion be brought up in every conversation, it's just...... the way he wrote/did worldbuilding for it comes off as as very "non-religious person who doesn't have any particular understanding of religion/why people are religious tries to write what they think religion is about" and most of the time it's kinda cringe.

You want dragon AU asks? Oh, boy. I deeply apologize in advance for the list lol. Is everyone a dragon? What are the specialties of each dragon? Can you do a size comparison chart (based off the fact that Atem is a fuck-ton bigger than TKB)? World setting (mythical land/ancient Egypt/etc)? Free space to add whatever else you really want to share because life appears to have a personal vendetta against me atm so I want to drown myself in someone elses AU.
OHGOD LOADED QUESTION!! I WILL TRY MY BEST TO ANSWER
not everyone is a dragon! there are also humans and half-dragons in their world. they have a pretty low global population in comparison to others but theyre not rare per se. (not sure if or how many other fantasy races there are, havent really thought about it)
by specialties im guessing you mean skills/elemental powers? they arent 100% set in stone yet for everyone but for the main cast:
atem: [based on slifer] a god-class dragon, his domain are the skies and he feels most at home there. he can control the weather in his region, both intentionally and subconsciously (cue weird weather patterns when hes going through stuff). atems element is lightning but he can manipulate water and air pressure to a minor degree too!
yugi: [based on gandora] well-meaning but unintentionally destructive. his signature rays at full power can vaporize anything but require an insane amount of energy, so he only uses it as a last resort move since he will pass out right after. i affectionately call him a little nuke.
ryou: [based on CoH/angels] doesnt really have an element but hes venomous. he can either spit his venom like a cobra or turn it into pressurized steam. in low concentration it will make you trip balls and/or paralyze you but a high dosage will grant you a slow and painful death. hes also well-versed in shady magic.
amir: [based on ra] hes a bit of an anomaly, since hes an artificial god-class dragon. his element is fire(?), at his strongest capable of making a small sun to collapse into a black hole. amir can also super heat his surroundings, which is how he scorched half of the continent when he escaped containment... he also grows obsidian-like crystals on his body that he uses for both offense and defense.
malik: [based on ra] a past(?) god-class dragon, his element is true pure light that he can turn into weapons or use to set things on fire. he doesnt use his element often since its taxing and triggers a lot of old traumas. he prefers to use his "superior tactical knowledge" and "overwhelming charisma", to uh... various levels of success.
bakhura: [based on diabound] born non-elemental but developed the ability to shoot concentrated plasma out of spite and pure unadulterated wrath. summoned satan and wiped out a whole kingdom. fought god and tied. managed to survive the following: getting shot out of the sky (multiple times), a few mile drop with broken wings, being impaled and then sealed away in a magical prison for a very long time. i think that counts as a special skill.
i will draw a proper size comparison chart for both their humanoid and dragon forms at one point. im still working out their heights so i cant give you any exact measurements for the humanoid forms
as for the dragon forms i can give estimates!
in that one drawing atem isnt even fully grown yet, he gets at least 4 times bigger. he was still a teen during the calamity!
cue shitty doodle!
Tumblr media
amir is THE biggest dragon in this au tho, dwarfing even a full grown atem. he towers over mountains, literally. luckily hes incapable of shifting whenever he feels like it or the whole world wouldve been burnt to ash by now. he did once and half of the continent is now a glass desert.
malik wouldve come in second in terms of height if he could shift at all.
yugi is a few feet taller than bakhura. still on the short size for his species.
ryou is the smallest. hes just a bit shorter than bakhura.
as for the setting, its a mythical land! im still working on the lore and worldbuilding but continent where the main story takes place is inspired by ancient egypt! im trying to avoid the generic european medieval fantasy (and its tough sobs)
cant think of anything else atm (its late as hell) so heres a shot of dragon atem instead!
Tumblr media
this is the longest answer ive ever given to an ask lmao thank you sm for the question!!! <3

Oh boy a fun weird complicated one...
DAKLEIT is a weird start on account of I don't know wtf this guy is. The original design gives off serious Hellraiser Cenobite vibes to me, but I can't really nail that link down with anything. Some bad google translate suggests DARKLIGHT, which I guess isn't unfitting but is still completely arbitrary. It could be DARKLYTE as in DARK+ACOLYTE. (Google just returns DUCLIGHT, a Japanese company that makes roadside guardrails.) He shows up in WA3 in a weird almost DUNE-esque or Star Wars Tuscan Raider looking desert get up. No idea what the through-line is on that.
DEATHTILES. So funny enough the original name is actually DEATHPAI where the PAI refers to a mahjong tile, hence the English localization. But there is a mahjong manga called DEATHPIE, romanized exactly like that, in which DEATHPIE is the name of an underworld gambling racket that the hero faces off against. So I have to assume that's what this enemy name is referencing? (The series is actually an obtuse Kamen Rider parody of all things...)
LYCANTHROPE/LOUP-GAROU classic werewolf and the French specific name of the local wolfman lore. The WA3 Lycanthrope came in both man and monster forms, the former recolored from DAKLEIT, but the latter being a shared model with various distinctly not werewolf monsters, including VAMPIRE... but we'll get to those...
BALBERITH should probably be BA'AL BERITH but I think I've seen it spelled both ways. An old Canaanite god in the old testament, as with many figures of the region and era's indigenous faiths it was appropriated and conflated into a false god/demon.
RADUGA[Радуга] is the Russian word for "Rainbow"? I have no idea what the reasoning behind this is. It does have a multi colored coat of fur though.
BEOWULF from the epic of Beowulf, obviously... epic hero of old Germanic myth, and most notable for being the oldest surviving work of English literature.
RING KEEPER is probably just exactly what it says on the tin... Just a monster that keeps the cursed ring you have to take to complete the particular side quest it's associated with. But I get this sneaking suspicion it might be a reference to Gollum from The Lord of the Rings(?) (WA3 does already have the dwarves of The Hobbit just kicking around. So there being a wretched twisted monster hanging onto an evil ring in a cave some place doesn't feel not TLotR adjacent...)
VAMPIRE what a weird choice... Weird model for a vampire. Weird that there's not been a VAMPIRE monster before now. Weird that there wouldn't be another after this... Weird that they accidentally had BLOODSUCKER sort of overlap with VAMPIRE but they're totally unrelated. Just kinda goofy.
NOSFERATU isn't directly related to this line, but I'm adding them in as a half relative of the VAMPIRE. The NOSFERATU was a WA1 original that stuck around the whole way despite some weird design changes... Namely that between WA2 and WA4 both taking stabs at redesigning it, both went with a mummy in pharaoh's attire??? Wrong Universal Studios monster movie, you guys... It is of course named after the famous legally distinct Not-Dracula movie adaptation of 1922 starring Max Schreck as Count Orlok.
NECROMANCER originally localized as WIZARD has been in lock step with NOSFERATU. Despite that this does not make any more sense as an Egyptian mummy than NOSFERATU does.
NEGALORD is a weird blip on the radar. A 3rd recolor that only existed in WA2, it was actually named MINUS LIFE LORD, and I cannot for the life of me figure out what was up with that. It definitely feels like it must have been referencing some other work of fiction, right? Like it's too specific a word choice to be random but just self-descript; it feels like it's referencing someone else's worldbuilding jargon.
GESPENST/NACHTGEIST and these two just show up in WA2 as kinda generic robed occultists with their big ornamental knives. GESPENST seems to be the root of the WA3 model that it shares with NOSFERATU and NECROMANCER since it's the one that was a boss monster, but what even is that? Wheels??? Oh but the names themselves are just German for "Ghost" and "NightSpirit".

M.S.D Pyrite - A Solar Cargo Ship of a Used Future
Tumblr media
I keep poking at this model, but it's not getting better without a complete rebuild I think. So, I might as well introduce the Pyrite.
The 'small' transport class of the solar system, it fills the role a semi-truck does today. Large enough to make moving cargo worth the time and money, small enough that it can get into all sorts of places that a much larger ship, equivalent in function to a Super-Tanker, wouldn't be able to. It can go the distance, capable of operating between planets, while also easily docking with small stations as much as large habitats.
With the engines and fusion plant in the aft, the command deck and recreation areas in the fore, the bulk of the ships accessible mass is devoted to locking points for cargo containers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Containers docked to the ship directly (with a box representing a 6' tall person and a 40' x 8' x 8.5' Semi Container for scale) are plugged into the power plant, able to generate their own bubbles of minimal heat and even atmosphere if specially pods are swapped out for, to allow the transport of perishable goods across the void.
Perishable goods are often smaller than raw goods like minerals so a fair amount can be fit in the 16 pods, but that is not all this class of vessel is capable of hauling.
Tumblr media
On the underside is what is often colloquially known as the 'Docking Bump'. While meant to allow docking arms to grab hard onto a solid bit of the ship, a bit like jack points on a car, they also allow additional cargo to be clamped onto the ship, riding on the belly like a young marsupial on it's mother. While capable of attaching far greater amounts of cargo, it's also a lot more limited in what it can move.
Nothing that would be overly bothered by high amounts of radiation, horrific swings between hot and cold, a airless environment. Standalone self powering containers do exist, but they are both expensive and not that common.
Finally, carrying "Belly Cargo" also changes the logistics of being on the move. More mass means a longer travel time, slower acceleration and deceleration. It can mean more time waiting at the other end as, to big now to fit in a berth, you have to wait for more manual unloading. More does not always equal more profit and it takes a canny Quartermaster to find that line. So, the Pyrite is a cargo ship, nothing glamorous, the invisible workhorse of the solar system. But there's more to it than that. While this basic un-textured model doesn't show it, the Pyrite is old, and worn. The M.S.D (Mercury Service Designation) reveals how far this ship came to end up rotting in a berth on Io. The scuffs, stains, oil, and patches show just how long it's been in service.
Tumblr media
More than that is the name, Pyrite, who would name a trading ship that they were staking their livelihood that. Pyrite, Fools Gold, what does that say about your prospects?
I will likely never get to make Io, but I'd like to. I'd like to make a game in a cool setting where the stakes are still very personal. Where both the player and the character they inhabit take a small boon revived out of the blue and take a chance on not a momentary distraction but a better tomorrow, on fulfilling a lifelong dream.
The Pyrite is old, it's under-serviced, and it's clearly had a history of bad luck. Everyone who isn't similarly at the bottom will look at all the effort gone to to scrape together enough cash for the ship, a cargo, and crew, and deride it as utterly foolish.
But Pyrite has another meaning, beyond Fools Gold. That of fire, for the sparks it produces when struck, a fact largely forgotten nowadays. Yes, working your way from bottom of the barrel refinery work to ship owner is not likely, it is not a safe use of a unexpected windfall. But within the confines of fiction, it's totally possible Hey, if you read this far for some reason, thanks! Io is one of those projects I'd love to make but, unfortunately, my skills deficient in so many ways. I'm best at worldbuilding, writing and I've been learning how do basic models, but I have no ability to code, getting my head around even basic engine stuff makes it spin, and such things as music and textures are beyond me.
But I keep plugging away at little things.
Speaking of that actually, wish I knew how much it would cost to get a texture made for this ship?

More depth part 2!
In this one, I'll explain the difference between Shortcuts and Portals! Well at least in this silly crackship filled AU's sense~
So Shortcuts in short, are a way of teleporting from one place to another! Almost most Sanses know how to do this technique well aside from Killer.
But we sorta take being to use Shortcuts somewhat different! Shortcuts is a weaker form of teleportation in comparison to making Portals!
Shortcuts is where the user can be able to teleport around anywhere within the limitations of their magic. Limitations be that it has to be a location recognized by memory and/or within their timeline.
Though those that can use shortcuts can't teleport into other timelines or AUs. Due to the fact the attempt to do so might rip the user part by the magical strain!
Also just to clear up! In our way of using, universes are Undertale, Underswap, Underfell, etc
While timelines are the Pacifist, Neutral, and Genocide endings! Hope this clears things up! ^^
Tumblr media
So basically userA can teleport everywhere in worldA but can't teleport to worldB and vice-versa with userB! This is due to having to force their body through the Void and Anti-Void, which can literally rip the whole being apart.
That is..unless someone can create a portal that can provide safe passage through the voids! Which is where the Portal users(portalers?) come in!
Portals, or those that can create Portals have the power to rip holes through reality!
Tumblr media
Users that can make 'portals' can easily hop through the different timelines and AUs whenever they so wish!
Whether they know the location or not! (Even though it's better if the user knows where they wanna go rather than continously au hopping lol)
