the Aurebesh isn't very great from a conscripting perspective. not only because it's a fucking cipher (a mere font to write in English, with English nonsensical spelling rules) but also because all letters are blocky squares.
Which us fine because this isn't the focus of Star Wars, it's purpose isn't to work well linguistically or practically, it is to set an atmosphere and pretend it's not English
Chinese, Japanese and other syllabic scripts work that way because each symbol stands for a while syllable, not an individual sound. and English has syllables with massive consonant clusters like scratch
an alphabet needs many tall, thin letters like l i r q r t p d f h j k l b
if all letters are fat and wide like ლ then any text occupies far too much space and is overly long. and larger chunks of text consume exponentially more space, paper, ink, digital pages, stablishment titles, etc, not to mention being annoying to read
the simplest solution is to create thinner versions of each letter, making them thinner and thinner until it's a totally different alphabet
a different solution that preserves the blocky feel is to combine letters together into ligatures, like in Hindi, specially for common words and consonant combinations, so, fusing E and R into a single ER letter, for example.
to illustrate, this is "Republic" in canon Aurebesh:
Tumblr media
and this is "Republic" after combining some letters:
Tumblr media
we could go more aggressive and combine more than two letters, but speakers would have to know all ligatures, but that's fine, Hindi speakers learn hundreds or millions of letter combinations and they're not random, they are intuitive
now with Skywalker:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
of course, i'd still prefer to make an alphabet which actually makes sense
Tumblr media
real life example: Korean
if we wrote English with the Hangul, Republic would be 러풉맄
[ㄹ=r][ㅓ=e][ㅍ=p][ㅜ=u][ㅂ=b][ㄹ=l][ㅣ=i][ㅋ=k]
ㄹ+ㅓ=러
ㅍ+ㅜ+ㅂ=풉
ㄹ+ㅣ+ㅋ=맄
canon Aurebesh would spell it ㄹㅓㅍㅜㅂㄹㅣㅋ
Hindi:
र=e रे=re फ=p फु=pu
ब=b ल=l ब्ल=bl ब्लि=bli ख=c
रेफुब्लिख = Republic
canon Aurebesh would spell it रएफउबलइख

Hello everyone! Fiona from the askblog council here. Due to popular demand, we've reached out to the Department of History to see if we could get some professors to share what they know about the inner workings of our world.
And great news, we've gotten responses from two professors willing to take it on! One of them specializes in human era history, and the other specializes more in legendary and mythical studies. They have requested to remain anonymous at this time, but it's still great that they're willing to share their knowledge with everyone!
I'll open up the inbox and forward any questions to the professors. Their schedules are busy, so I'm expecting maybe one response from either of them every week.
Here are some suggestions for the questions:
The civilization of Pokemon. Did all pokemon become civilized
The history between humans and pokemon.
Why aren't there any humans around here?
Questions about specific legendary or mythical pokemon.
Are legendary and mythical pokemon like us?
Where do legendary and mythical pokemon live
You can ask them anything youd like, really. There's no limit! I'm sure they'd be happy to answer!

What is the world of ‘Magicae’? What is this world like and how does it differ from the non-magical world?
P.S. Thank you for the comprehensive answers!
The world of "Magicae" is a lot like Camp Halfblood from Percy Jackson or the Wizarding World in Harry Potter in the sense that it is completely separate from the non-magical world but also entirely interwoven with it.
Most areas in the magic world (cities, towns, schools, buildings, neighborhoods, etc) are either hidden by barriers or enchantments - you just have to have enough magicae to see through them in order to get in and out. There are a few shops that exist in both worlds, but they usually are pretty spread out and have methods of concealing the more magical aspects when Debilis are shopping!
What the magical world is actually like is a bit more complicated to explain. It's a lot like the normal world in some ways and completely different in others. In general though, the magicae world is much more fantastical than the regular one.
It'll be explained in the game but here are some smaller details about the general setting!
Most Magus just teleport so there aren't many vehicles. If they are they're usually enchanted to do a specific thing (like fly or carry a lot of weight).
Most objects function with magic. It's not uncommon to see brooms sweeping all alone or drinks refilling themselves.
The currency is pretty odd. It's a mixture of coins, bills, and the occasional gold bar or gemstone.
There isn't really any "fast" shopping. Most shops and restaurants are completely unique and would probably be considered "small businesses" if they were in the nonmagical world.
The clothing is pretty different. Some older members of the community wear things like robes or tunics. A lot of it is also hand-made so you probably wouldn't see the same exact piece twice.
Technology exists (like phones and laptops) but most Magus prefer sending a letter or just writing stuff down. There's no particular reason for this except for it's more convenient. There aren't a lot of shops that holds those types of things, so they'd have to go to the non-magical world to get them.

The captured trolls have a bracelet that they are told to wear at all times. They come in two forms; the ones worn by minors which can be removed and expected to be temporary in order to receive the second form, which is a permanent band sealed around a part of their forearm. This bracelet glows and pings a minimum of three times a day, and during those times takes a 'snapshot' of the trolls status (health, location, if they're alive or dead, the genre specific characteristic that decides their potency (pop trolls become more vibrant), and their designated product label (consumable, entertainment, supplement, or entertainment)). The bracelet for the minor trolls look like a braided twine or leather (depending on the genre), but are wires wrapped in said material, with a steel stud (rock and country) / bell (classical and pop) / bead (funk and techno) attached to it.
Rogue trolls or lost goods (trolls who are not accounted for, often times assumed dead, like bruce) often removed these bracelets. Easier and without scars when removed before turning into an adult (which is the age 21), but needing to be separated from the flesh as an adult and leaving a major scar behind.
when poppy was growing up, her father told her that they are hug time bracelets and when they light up it means its time for hugs. This was to preserve her optimistic outlook, as well as peppy's thinking that since poppy is part of the royal family brand that she is protected enough not to learn about the common sense and darker aspects of their life that other trolls learn as they are growing up. Unfortunately this is not the case, and in fact caused a culture shock for poppy and those she shared this belief with later on in life. Such as during the initial meeting between her and the bands that peppy tried to insert her into, like the snack pack and kismet.
Delta Dawn and Trollzart were purchased by a person known as the Playwright, who looks like a purple themed venice carnival jester, along with a variety of trolls in a group called Company. Playwright is famous for their plays, mostly tragedies with strokes of cynical and sadistic humor, which is why Delta Dawn was picked. Playwright is known by the trolls as someone who believes in method acting, and often prods and leads the trolls in the company into situations to 'enrich their life and delve into the role they will play". Such as turning a blind eye and leaving supplies and opportunities to meet their separated family but expecting them to return on time. Otherwise their role in the play will twist to teach them a lesson, which will in turn influence their life in reality outside of the play. And the unfortunate thing is, the troll themself would have been the one to hand the information over to the Playwright of what they value most, during their permitted escapes.
John traveled around after he escaped. He kept the bracelet on, but had help in tweaking it so that it pings once every 3 days. His hair was kept shortened and gelled with a specific hair product that kept it stiff and uncooperative, as the larger being who bought him is aware of the pop trolls' ability to use their hair in multiple ways. And john is determined and visibly motivated for his brothers that the larger being, known as the Producer, wanted to curb john's ability to escape and become a threat.
John contacted the rogue trolls that his grandma talked to him about, and joined in the plan to get trolls bought by kind if not 'kinder' larger beings, as well taking the system down.
the more he hears of his brothers being bought and disappearing the more desperate and crazed he grows. Becoming more erratic and frenzied in his attempts to make a name and place for himself and his brothers. Has taken to bribing to be connected to the bracelet of his brothers, so he can monitor their status; unfortunately this means he had front row status of when his clay's bracelet updated to be 'discontinued' and eventual abrupt disconnect, and bruce's status dropping in health and eventually as 'lost goods'. As you can imagine, seeing the status of companion for floyd and the less than stellar health status does not paint a good picture for John. Only branch's consistent location and great health in comparison to the rest of the brothers keeps john tethered to his past morals and focused in sane decisions.
currently staying in an aquarium planetarium kept by Kid ritz and some elemental like larger beings. A mix of funk and techno trolls do a show. Mostly left to their own devices, and their natural dances and music keeping the place looking alive and thriving. With large and winding see through tubes and tall domed ceilings for the rooms, it is kept mostly in dark lighting in order to highlight the natural glow of the techno trolls and make the bright colors and metallic finish of the funk trolls and their drifting technology and bubbles more prominent
may or may not have traded himself a couple of times to get the resources and connections to make the adjustments and plans he currently has. such as 'entertainment', 'supplement' or even in some memorable moments acting as temporary 'consumable'
ps. i do have a design for bruce and clay more or less drawn up as well as some scenes for them, i just need to transfer it from my notebook to my drawing pad kek. dunno how clear itd look if i took a photo with my phone.
i gave bruce the beginning of a beard and an apron hahaha
played around and gave clay a kind of starshaped hair, and TUSKS!! i like it :)
i think for floyd i wanna play around with giving him space buns or lots of clips. that prized poodle vibe.
playing with the idea of giving john a dwarf hairstyle and beard...lord of the rings almost...give him some salt and pepper look
branch has gelled hair, as is customary for pop trolls in bands to curb their ability to use their hair. Also has gloves on and a trademark face paint marking on him; hides the patches of gray that appeared and grown since each subsequent lost of his family and stayed permanent after grandma rosiepuff got taken. Kismet have mics on near constantly, and have learned to do sign language in order to communicate silently, though they try to disguise it as dance moves.

Yaldev is a sci-fantasy worldbuilding project by Ulysses Maurer, with art by Beeple. By looking at narratives, stylized loredumps, bad poetry and little details, we'll witness the story of a planet filled with magical power, the nation which tried to conquer it, this empire’s dramatic collapse and the new world which emerged in its wake. Along the way we'll meet the characters who live here, and we'll explore questions about nationalism, rationalism, the natural world and the quest to master it. I'm thinking (as I often do) about the manner in which to potentially build a D&D-style elfgame-type campaign setting for fantasy adventure games that is also built on a foundation of realism and verisimilitude. Specifically, because I'm me, I'm thinking about speculative evolution. It's hardly an elfgame setting without, y'know, elves, but also other fantastic creatures like dragons and mimics and What If A Spider Was Large.
At the moment I'm particularly focused on the interrelation between real-world creatures and fantastical creatures. It's one thing to speculatively-evolve a biosphere that produces unicorns, it's another for that biosphere to ALSO include horses. In trying to be realistic, how do you have animals with real-life established evolutionary histories, including humans, existing alongside mythic beafts?
I think there's several ways one could handle it, but I feel like the ones that are most conducive to elfgaming environment are just two:
1: Earth Evolution But A Little To The Left. This world isn't Earth, but it has an extremely similar biohistory with some added weirdness. Recognizable real-world clades evolve alongside dragons and giants and sea monsters, which all have their own place in the cladogram. If you're feeling pulpy, maybe some non-avian dinosaurs didn't go extinct. Humans evolved like they did on Earth but have various relatives that are still alive, i.e. elves and dwarves and orcs and such, taking the place of Neanderthals or Homo floriensis but minus the whole going-extinct thing. Maybe also some other clades evolved bipedalism and intelligence, so that you can have your lizardfolk and catfolk and elephantfolk.
2: We're The Alien Invasion. Earth-life is foreign to the fantastical world. Our Earth exists in this setting and humans come from it, along with a bunch of other animals that you Need to have in fantasy stories like horses and bears and lupines, but the main setting is a world of elves and dragons and displacer beasts. Elves, orcs, dwarves, et al are similar to humans only because of convergent evolution, not because they're taxonomically related. Imported bears compete with owlbears for their ecological niches.
There are other paths you can take (maybe the setting is basically Earth but magic turns humans and animals into mythical creatures, like in Shadowrun), but those two feel like the ones that could best facilitate a setting that fits into games like D&D and Pathfinder, in my opinion. Most existing campaign settings fall into Type 1 already I think, at least implicitly or whenever they care to touch on evolution.
I'm not sure which I prefer. They're both valid, but they have their own pros and cons. Type 1 allows you to play with more extinct animals than Type 2, and I'm always a sucker for when a wizard game has a dinosaur in it. Type 2 gives you much more room to play in the speculative evolution space, since you don't have to worry about messing up the balance of an existing biosphere. Type 1 allows for half-human hybrids with less need for justification. Type 2 requires you to be more creative about what "counts" as an elf or dwarf if they have to be aliens. Type 2 makes it a bit easier to justify the existence of six-limbed vertebrates like dragons, pegasi, or centaurs.
I don't have a conclusion or anything to this, I just think it's interesting to think about.

The new map for Fins Above is here
Tumblr media
I had to create an entire unit of length for the merfolk in order to map this, so hope this is proof of my efforts haha.
I began by searching each location. If it is mentioned how long it took a character to reach point B from point A, I would write it down. My point A for all locations is the Salt Shoal, labeled as "Old Shoal" here.
'bc means a single bellchime, or day.
'bl means 4 bells, or the four periods of a day (morning, noon etc). A bellchime contains four bells.
'ts means a single tail shadow, or hour. Lightbell is 5 hours, morningbell is 9 hours, middlebell is an hour, and darkbell is 9 hours.
'tl equals 3 feet, or a yard. the average tail length is 3 feet.
So in this case, Metkeel is 2'ts from Four'Leaf.

What worldbuilding is to me?
Some people are worldbuilding to expand on stories that they're planning to unleash onto the world
Others are worldbuilding to create a vast atmosphere for players and friends at game night
Video game developers are putting together a world they know thousands may spend hours indulging in
Fanfic authors are trying to take their AU designs to the next level, really knocking out those implications that such a universe would spawn.
Artist are trying to understand the places and characters they're creating better.
Me?
I'm doing it for fun!
In the end we're all worldbuilders

then two years later we found out there are real life elves in our system and they're NOTHING like our fictional elves

first part of the mortally coiled timeline, covering the Creation Era. The Creation Era (or first era) is the longest era by far due to spanning from the formation of the Mortal Coil up the first death credited to Noxa Krov. i haven't nailed down the actual span yet, so it's not to scale (especially considering the time pre-main world life is a way way way WAY longer time span than the rest of the era. the little squiggle between the creation of the first sun and khetzal encompasses an impossibly long and practically uncountable amount of time.)

Viva and a variety of trolls got purchased by a ring master-esque person. The group perform like a mix of cirque de soleil and circus. Flips, songs and tricks for the audience. Mix of pop, country and funk trolls in the group. Vivas group is thought of first, if not The thought, when circus/big top performances are brought up.
But the ring master looks odd…movements are slightly delayed or disjointed and is never seen without their signature carnival porcelain mask and long coat and gloves. Has a veil covering the head with what looks like multi-colored embroidery through it, and sits on a wheelchair that floats (similar to funk troll technology). Truth is the ring master is a larger being (who looks like a wooden puppet) that they killed or died, and the trolls maneuver to keep the place running and remain "owned" but free. Trolls who were bought and lose their owner is subject to being reclaimed to be purchased again or just taken by larger beings who find them for keeps.
Noted to always have trolls around him. Notably viva and hickory.
hickory got modified to look like a country troll, as he connected with country trolls and wanted to commit. Thought it was a blessing, the favor in exchange for the transformation was his brother to be traded. Currently have no news of what happened to him or where he is. Ring master agreed as that would be quite the attraction, a troll who changed genres and also because hickory brought it up himself. Performs as a beast tamer and stuntman
viva has a trapeze clothing (think zendaya from greatest showman) and plumage on her wrist, shoulders and waist (like carnival costumes from brazil)
clays hair is wild and shaped like a lion and has multiple scars. Semi feral so has bigger teeth and his claws no longer retract so easily. Performs as beast man, wears toga or themed armor, roaring and partnering with hickory to perform fights and stunts. Picked up by viva as he was making his escape after attacking and running from the facility when he was branded as a discontinued troll (means they become solely a consumable product and can't be bought or treated as another type of product). would have been a leader, but prefers to not be in the spotlight so he wont be collected again. (Clay was hyped up before being sold, as there were different demands for him due to his bright coloring and high energy performances. So the facility tried to create higher demand by rousing the competitiveness between the different buyers. Clay caught wind of the intentions and also doesn't want to leave his remaining brothers and fought when he was being collected. Injured a worker and was labeled as a discontinued troll)
Creek is bought by Chef and became something like a mascot/host for her restaurant. His zen and medication techniques have a more significant effect like jazz music, once he has beings meditating and following his voice they become more vibrant/concentrated and compliant. This ability is what allows the restaurant to have their specialty, named misted meal. Where a troll is diffused and misted over the guest during their meal of other foods, before finally being eaten.
the restaurant is called Bergens Desire; and was rearranged later to spell De Sirens
creek worked hard to improve his ability and went from needing hours and one on one, to multitudes and only needing a moment of relaxation and being obeyed by a troll to affect them.
wearing host clothing, with scented wooden beads he fiddles in his hands and around his ankles. after taking over he wears an apron with the most fascinating pattern, the splashes of color draws the eye and makes one focus.
gets betrayed by chef and attempted being replaced with chaz. Is furious and sings (think certain part of no way from six the musical) before paralyzing and injuring chef, and taking over the restaurant. Group of trolls left over becomes something like a serial killer, led by Creek and Chaz. Uses the restaurant's reputation to lure in customers, with promises of a high end customized meal with one on one experience. Doesn't always kill the people who come into the restaurant to ward of suspicions. When they do kill a person its usually preceded by interviewing if they harmed/exploited trolls and a chorus of "You want us? You like us? You wouldn't leave us right? Replace us and just throw us away, no you're better than that. You want to eat? Be our guest (serves the guest previously killed large beings as meals; where else would they have gotten special meats/ingredients)
chaz collaborated with creek because one, creek is kinda scary when he attacked chef all the while soothingly narrating in order to paralyze her, and also cause he didn't want to work with the Chef anyway. So might as well work with creek. They became somewhat partners to maintain the establishment moving forwards
John sending secret msgs to his bros using his written songs that make it to top 100
branch; by talking or speaking with the bands who sang johns song and they were basically dropping hints that there are msgs hidden there for him and his brothers. he just needs to listen closely
Bruce eventually starts talking about little facts about himself that are true. such as he hads brothers. he feels uncomfortable with comments or compliments about his looks. he found that he likes growing out a beard, he was never able to do that before. he appreciates that brandy speaks to him at a comfortable distance and sits so that shes not looming over him. And all these little comments adds up and while brandy is feeling flattered and happy that bruce is feeling comfortable enough to share more about himself, she's also growing concerned because wow, yea. This guy definitely has a Story about him.
Cooper was born and raised by the funk royals. But because of a favor and because the current funk family owner wants to experiment, cooper is sent to become part of the snack pack. Funk family owner when prince D tried to intervene and argue: 'I want to see how separated twins will react and grow. Entertain me and ill even make a reunion later. Make it worth my while little prince, your happy ever after depends on it'

Suppression Flowers
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oxado had the world’s biggest flowers. On a diet of sunlight, soil and sorcery, they grew as tall as humans, and sometimes taller. But without ambient magic, they could never sustain their stature; they were the first plants to wither away under the suppression towers. In the end, their final habitats were the peaks of the structures that choked them out, where the specimens were allowed to feed on the misty mana that snaked up the towers on its way back out of existence.
