notes: ok so i have only completed book 3, but ive gotten plenty of spoilers about the next four books so i think i wrote for them pretty well just a heads up tho

RIDDLE ROSEHEARTS find you a little hard to keep up with. He himself has his outbursts and episodes like anybody else, but that also comes with anger, so he does his best to suppress them. But you? No, you were always this way, and in a positive manner. It almost reminded him of Kalim, except that you could handle yourself and seemed to be relatively smart, seeing that you were passing your classes as a non-magical person in a magical school.

Your excitability sometimes led to you have an evident, though not purposeful, disregard for the rules. It was irksome, yes, and it took a lot of restraint from him not to lash out at you as much as he may at Ace or Deuce—he still feels guilty from his Overblot, and besides, you’re a lot easier to stand at times than compared to those two. But, overall, he still manages, opting to instead recite the rule you broke tamely, and receiving an understanding nod from you that makes him pleased. Quietly, he’ll let out this small sigh, a symbol of his appreciation for your respect of his strict ways. It isn’t easy for him to change, and while he’s trying his best, it’s nice to know he has somebody who’s willing to comply with the rules for his sake.

LEONA KINGSCHOLAR somehow gets even sleepier in your presence. Just the sight of you having so much energy makes him lethargic. Why were you always so peppy? How were you always so peppy? It didn’t make any sense to him. You being this way wouldn’t be so much of an issue if you weren't so persistent. But here you were, shaking his shoulder in an attempt to wake him, and here he was, tired and annoyed and letting you drag him to his classes just to shut you up. It was like having a brighter, more talkative version of Cheka that actually knew what made him tick. It was irritating, but if he really hated it so much, why'd he always comply and go along with you? He'd never admit it, not in a million years, but he has this respect for you after all you've done for NRC, so he finds it best to give into your wishes, no matter how childish you seem. Because he knows that you aren't. He's seen it play out with every single Overblot. You're a lot more clever than you look, Herbivore, and he gives credit where credit is due.

AZUL ASHENGROTTO has to deal with Floyd on the daily, so it's not like this is anything new to him. If anything, it's better, considering your energy doesn't take the form of violence, like a certain Leech twin. At first, Azul did mistakenly assume your energy to be included with stupidity, which was a grave error on his part, when he discovered your scheme to destroy his contracts. In fact, he really thought you to be dumb enough to forget to even drink the water breathing potion before you went underwater to the museum. He was harshly incorrect, however, and so now he deals with the price of having to put up with your bounciness. You visit the Mostro Lounge quite often, helping out for an extra profit where you could and checking up on Azul, despite his protests against it. He's internally thankful, somewhere deep down, but it makes him embarrassed to admit it.

JAMIL VIPER is tired of this treatment. What did he ever do to deserve this? Is this punishment for his ill thoughts toward Kalim he's harbored for so many years? Why'd a Kalim Part Two have to come along? And hang around the Scarabia dorm so much? He was tired, over it, and so done with this crap. At the very least, you're not irredeemably dumb, and you're able to handle and care for yourself. You've made that quite evident from your life in Ramshackle to the way you've dealt with numerous overblots. He's surprised someone of your.. nature.. could be so responsible. So, as a minor thanks for not being completely stupid, he does his very best to.. avoid you. Why? Well, because even though you're tolerable, he'd prefer to not have a complete outburst of anger at you, fueled by Kalim's irresponsibility and the two of your energetic natures combined. So, consider this a favor. He's trying to be considerate, let him do what he needs to do.

VIL SCHOENHEIT is intrigued, not annoyed, but not overjoyed, either. Epel’s a handful already, so now that he’s taking on yet another project, he’d prefer it if you were a little more compliant than the purple haired first year. He understood it felt difficult to sit still for a while, but just try for him, okay? Otherwise he finds it rather endearing. He thinks it’s cute, the way you get excited to see him all the time. It’s flattering, definitely. He just wishes you'd sit still while he paints your nails, potato.

IDIA SHROUD is overwhelmed please leave him alone why are you so wild god help him. He’s already constantly afraid of Kalim and Cater jumping him, now he’s gotta worry about another secret THIRD threat? this is NOT fun he NEVER should have exited his room WHY did he let Ortho drag him around today. You kind of scare him into attending classes. Though he guesses (?) he’s appreciative of having another person who seems so enthusiastic about games like he is. But please don’t scare him like that or else he WILL be going into conniptions.

MALLEUS DRACONIA finds it interesting, adorable and very fascinating. He’d adore you regardless of what you were like, but this is just so endearing to him. It’s one thing that people seem to get iffy around him, whether that be out of respect or fear or both. But you don’t seem to be overly respectful of him, nor afraid. It might seem like a death wish to most, but in your case? You were too enthralled with the current task of running up to him excitedly every time you saw him to even give it any thought. And that is what he appreciates and desires so much out of you. It brings a smile to his lips every time you bound outside of Ramshackle at night to walk with him, or when you have this big grin on your face as you talk about something that interests you. He couldn’t ask for it any other way, really.

summary: headcanons about trevor, michael, and brad during north yankton

• ik i’ve said it before but i’ll say it again: brad and trevor def played pranks on (aka BULLIED) lester. building on that tho: michael would get pissed as hell about it (most of the time. sometimes he wouldn’t bother giving a fuck). this would lead to arguments between trev/brad/michael, usually ending with trevor insinuating that michael and lester were secretly gay lovers and that’s why he defended him, causing michael to throw his hands up and just give the fuck up or remove himself from the situation so things wouldn't turn physical.

• ice skating !!! trevor already knew how to skate before joining the crew cuz of playing hockey when he was younger, and on one particularly boring snowy day he tried teaching brad and michael how to skate, too. they both sucked at it tho and neither of them skated again after that day. like just imagine trevor skating circles around them, laughing and making fun of them for falling on their asses.

• continuing on abt snow-related sports: ice fishing. when he wanted some peace and quiet, michael would go ice fishing at whatever nearest frozen body of water he could find. most of the time he wouldn't catch anything; he just did it as an excuse to be away from everyone else for a while. can imagine him inviting lester along a handful of times too tho so that they could gossip/bitch about how annoying trevor and brad were.

• michael would sometimes try to host Movie Nights. he'd make a big fuss about showing trevor and brad some old-ass classic film. he'd make microwaved popcorn and then get everyone to sit around the shitty tiny TV of whatever hotel or safehouse they were staying in at the time and pop in a well-loved VHS tape of one of his favorite movies. both trevor and brad would interrupt the movie with loud, inappropriate remarks though and michael would eventually lose his temper from telling them over and over to shut the fuck up. once he met and started dating amanda tho, he finally got a nice and peaceful movie-watching partner.

• lester fucking HATED brad and tried to interact with him as little as possible. can't quite remember right now if there's anything in canon to confirm or contradict this.. but i feel like lester would've had even less of a tolerance for brad's dumb ass than michael did.

• trevor and brad were like,, the world’s most volatile toxic married couple. one day they’d be best buddies, just having fun drinking/getting high/goofing off together. next day, they’re getting into yelling matches and throwing hands over like the last slice of nasty three-day-old pizza in the fridge or smth else equally stupid. idk why but i imagine brad had a temper almost as bad (or equally as bad) as trev’s, and that he was not exactly the brightest guy, so those two personality traits combined would be enough to frequently piss off trevor (and michael even moreso).

• trevor and brad def shared clothes.

• trevor and michael would occasionally have deep, late–night conversations that would last into the early morning hours. probably over beers and cigarettes. probably while sitting outside, probably on the snow–covered balcony of whatever shithole motel they were staying in. though trevor considered brad to be the more “fun” friend, he really appreciated these more serious talks about their pasts, their presents, and their futures with michael. those nights are both michael and trevor’s fondest memories from this period of their lives.

• i think there are some interesting implications in the game about trevor and amanda previously being friends, or at least being mildly friendly towards each other during the north yankton days. i imagine that this is largely because his drug use wasn’t nearly as bad as it became later on in his life, so even though he was loud/inappropriate/a bit chaotic, he wasn’t exactly dangerous nor too disgusting for amanda to be okay with spending time with. maybe she even let him babysit little jimmy and tracey occasionally (IMAGINE how cute....). brad, on the other hand, (even though amanda does admit that she “”“liked””” him in the game), was not allowed around the kids.

• i like to think that when they first met and for a while after, trevor really genuinely looked up to michael. like admired his leadership abilities and his skills at pulling scores (and i’m applying the popular headcanon that michael is a few years older than trev here but also srsly,, where does that headcanon come from?? is there any actual evidence for this or is it just a headcanon that became popular in the fandom pls someone lmk if u have an answer to this !!). as time went on though, this admiration gradually waned. michael started making decisions that trevor just wasn’t on board with (namely marrying a certain stripper and having kids with her), arguments became more frequent, trevor started to distance himself from mike a bit and spend more time with brad.

also like i used to get complimented on my looks a lot by like girls and stuff but honestly i was super insecure like i would dead ass look in the mirror and like cringe 💀 but at the same time i always had a girl be like ‘aww i wish i looked like u’ ‘ur so pretty i wish i had ur nose’ and it literally made me feel like shit and like coz ppl usually would think someone confident and outgoing wouldn’t be insecure like maybe an introvert but not a loud people person

so when i would express myself to ppl they would literally think i was being attention seeking and compliment fishing and ungrateful when i genuinely just sometimes didn’t like the way i looked and it hurt coz it was ppl close to me

anyway i guess it was a phase probably just some secondary school weird thing but now my issue is different 🥰

I honestly used to be the same. I only ever wrote straight smut even tho I have no desire for it myself lmao. But Tess is for the girlies ( and maybe Joel in canon 🤧)

You should totally write for her! There are not many Tess writers around honestly. And you can write her however you wanna. I love writing her a little softer and happier, I have a fair bit of soft sappy stuff posted and in draft because it’s just nice yk. And honestly if you do think you might write her ‘ too ‘ soft or you’re a stickler for sticking to her canon behaviour, you can always writer her in earlier outbreak years. The show shows us her in Lincoln and she’s a lil ray of sunshine making besties with Frank. So you can always write her in that time period if you really wanna be true to canon :)

And there’s always the point of fanfiction doesn’t always have to be this super true to canon behaviour when it comes to characters and how they behave. That’s the beauty of fanfiction. You make them your own. My version of Tess is completely different to another writers yk. You make them yours! And the beauty of Tess to is that we know so little about her really, so she’s kinda an open book. A blank slate. You can make her how you want.

Definitely give it a go and if you do end up posting anything with her pls tag me!

you gotta be BLIND to not catch onto the fact she’s hot. but then again, i wouldn’t treat her like some all-time stunner that makes the entire room turn and go silent at a glance like a wattpad fic or anything. she’s taken as a double-take kind of hot, u kno. like, the type of hot where u go ‘god damn’ and then u move on with ur day. or my hands got sweaty bc idt im well-dressed enough today to be in close proximity for u for longer than 45 seconds.

kinda hinging off the last question tho…. the vinh appeal gets stronger the longer she’s around. kinda got that ‘peripheral’ vibe, gotta go looking for her more, and more grows on u…..!

SHES GOT A LOT GOING ON THAT I THINK R NICE TO LOOK AT OKAY…..….. the most miscellaneous thing is that her hair’s a little messy n got hair falling in her face sometimes in a way that kinda covers her eye and that’s like. eroi.

most conventionally attractive thing abt her is divided b/w her long legs or her eyes overall (shape/eyelashes/irises/etc) 🤧 but if we get into the ‘weird’ category of miscellaneous things that are still kinda conventional. the list kinda looks like: her shoulder width + shoulder angle… her slender neck… sharp but subtle jawline… her cheekbones… her height… her mouth.. the defined collarbone…. torso-waist-hip ratio…. i think i’m allowed to allude to her asscheek. her many piercings… her long fingers… the way she’s definitely a mature n femme beauty but she’s kinda handsome if u look at her under the right lens. her moodier expressions that in my heart r so sultry/mysterious. she’s nicely muscled naturally, but she’s got a softer-toning to her. as ‘willowy’ as she can be depicted, i also like how subtly solid she is, u feel. i like her biceps and stomach specifically. her back is really nice. i like her sharp teeth. idt anybody needs to point out the small breast size thing but i think its charming and it has to be pointed out.

she’s very aware that other ppl think of her as attractive and she’s pretty conventional in her appeal, but doesn’t rly. feel it? cherish the notion? not that she thinks she’s ugly but she just rly doesn’t get the hype.

technically only uses it to her advantage when trying to keep herself presentable — i.e. may adapt herself if someone’s perception of her dictates she should lean harder into being appealing in that way.

👃 : Does your OC smell good? Do they have a signature scent?

did u know i stood in a yankee candle for like 15 minutes sniffing candles last week to embed scents in my brain to know if i could label them as vinhcore in my head. i have Also been previously tempted to sign up for perfume samples just to know more abt scents for the same exact reason. what does that tell u. what does that say about me, we will ignore that.

i think she smells rly… rich. expensive. a kinda sultry perfume? smth with amber that isn’t particularly sweet but floral w musk in a complex way…? but i feel like if im aiming to encompass the colder aspect of her character. it’s still going to lean harder towards floral but it’s less spice and more… woody. aromatic. smth kinda white floral/powdery.

she’s defo not awkward (being unsociable aside) but charming is a bit of a reach. interesting to talk to in her own right bc she’s been drilled on navigating events and ‘intellectually stimulating’ other’s minds to some degree by tradition’s decree, but being flirtatious or forthcoming is neither here nor there for her 😔

she knows her way around the block ❤️ granted, it’s usually pretty half-hearted bc she’s just not rly all that in-tune with expressing intimacy for most people. she’s just not rly gonna take much of a lead or initiate much. stays pretty chaste if its up to her, a fleeting smooch 2 the corner of the lip always seems 2 get the job done.

it’s only been recently that she’s become more active? she hasn’t been off the mountain or cloud for that long, and she’s been separated from her nation’s (elite) culture for an even shorter span of time. granted, it’s been a few years but nonetheless. there’s very long and pronounced gaps in her activity in most centuries prior to where we encounter her, and those are life long secrets that have been kept mostly under tight wraps. she’s known for being quite prudish back home, actually.

style-wise… 🤪 vinh’s very attentive and tends 2 heavily prioritize her partner’s needs. down for whatever bc she doesn’t rly have anything in mind, but isn’t exactly the easiest person to ‘rile up’. a servicing type that keeps a very level-head. isn’t rough at all, but she makes up for it in precision and (sometimes) passion. her composure slips a bit (…a lot?) when the shoe’s on the other foot of who’s getting the brunt of the attention. it seems there’s something going on over there about her actual preferences.

very reserved and would never initiate anything pda 💀 she can handle being on the receiving end of some Some pda (within limits) but she tends to avoid it if possible. but as the artist/writer i believe firmly in targeting vinh bc you might find that she’s lying a little about how reserved she is.

well if there’s something she knows they enjoy then she’ll do her best to arrange it for them. she’s the type to enjoy quiet evenings. whether or not they physically go out, spending time with them is fine.

if it were entirely up to her though, i think her go-to is between staying in and eating smth home-cooked together (even tho she, doesnt rly need to eat,) and generally just decompressing (watch a movie, bake smth small, lay around on the couch, etc) OR a small outing to a museum/art gallery/etc and a nice dinner at a restaurant :-) and then the rest of the night is… also for decompressing . most of the time i think of where the actual romance/bonding for vinh is, i land on like… super quiet moments like being in bed or somewhere where u get the stronger sense of having her complete attention, like in a car or in a quiet corner of a room.

wooing isn’t exactly something she sets out to do — but her methods of courting don’t change much regardless of how much she likes or mistrusts her partner.

her courting style is best encompassed as promising them her service, and that definition of ‘service’ is incredibly broad in terms. she aims to please within the limits of her dignity, and rolling over to align herself with their expectations for her is pretty standard. she thinks its critical for them to rely on her somehow or to at least have some due purpose for her to stick around, whether it be in semantics or actual duty.

on a less cynical note, the more romantic version of vinh is just best understood as a very dedicated partner. she’s reliable and responsible — and even if she’s not a super affectionate lover right out the gate, there’s kinda comfort in how… present she is? constant she is? pillar of support for real!!! she wants the best for her lover, and if that best somehow includes her in the image, then she’ll try to accommodate it. biggest difference here is she actually feels like telling her partner stuff thats wrong or things that are just Up instead of just going and fixing it on her own without much of a word.

rant - ignore if u want

so i just needed to rant… i didn’t want to specifically rant to my partner cause it’s not serious, and if rant in our usual gc (me + partner + friend) friend would ignore me and my partner would be the only one to respond anyway—

i got a gift card for christmas (can be used for a wide variety of stores) and i just wanna go and use it before it expires, but i have no one to go with me. like… usually when i hang out with someone it’s my brother (not my first choice of who i’d want to hang out with for many reasons.) and i have no friends. but i just wish i could hang out with someone and have a nice day out 🤧

but as i mentioned… i have no friends… there i people i know and talk to,, but i wouldn’t say we’re close (and for some not anymore) and i’m just tired of having practical no one. all of the people i’m referring to are either friends of a friend, or would never ask me to hang out unless i ask first (and i’m tired of not getting back what i give in friendships)

i have my partner, who i love dearly, but we basically have an online relationship, and when we see each other and for how long is very inconsistent and usually with other people and never alone. i yearn to go on a date with xem. and i could never fault thon for being unable to hang out with me often.

i don’t really wanna go alone… i already feel lonely majority of the time,, and my intrusive thoughts about it don’t help. i feel like going alone further solidifies that (as if me literally never leaving the house doesn’t already)

all the times i was out alone was either cause i tagged along with my brother and his friends (cause i have none) but leaving them cause i felt like a burden and didn’t want to bother them. (one time it made me so anxious that the only person i could talk to was my brother, i clung to his arm and whispered everything to him, i couldn’t talk to anyone else. as mentioned i ended up feeling bad so i left them to do my own thing, which resulted in my hunched in on myself, tapping my knuckles and muttering to myself.) or the few times i went to hang out with a friend years back and invited my brother, which resulted in THEM hanging out and i was strung along.

tho ik part of it is my fault… i don’t really put myself out there,, and it’s usually the friends that are making me rather than me making friends, if that makes sense. i naturally hate large crowds and close off when there’s a lot of people, even if i know them. and sometimes i hate the idea of meeting new people. i just wanna find people i can make deep connections with,, people who give back what i put in,, people who will be there for me.

i’m not sure if you have already watched the video but i’ll mention some brief points i-spy made that sorta stuck out to me as they explained the “blackpink as a self-insert character” phenomenon. you explained it perfectly; idol images are carefully crafted and curated marketing tools to sell the idea of their “persona” and “tropes”. members follow specific aesthetics, behaviours, styles etc. to fit their persona, most likely hiding their complete true selves (as all human beings really are incredibly nuanced and complex) and selling these “characters” along with the music. as we see idols as characters most of the time (as this is what we are usually shown) it’s not surprising that fans fall into the phenomenon of projecting themselves onto idols and turning them into self-inserts and their own personal Y/Ns, Lisa being notably the most popular for girls, Jimin from BTS for men & Jungkook from BTS as the most famous love-interest insert (hence the popularity of the liskook & jikook ships). fans will choose either the idols with the persona they want to be or relate to most as their self-insert.

funny confession: when i was 12 years old, i was guilty of this self-insert phenomenon! i used to write fanfic of snsd & 2pm (lol old stuff) where jessica jung was my personal self-insert & yuri & tiffany were inserts of my two closest friends. at the time, i related to jessica a lot as her persona was “ice princess”; someone cold, violent, standoffish, hot-tempered. i was a particularly aggressive person (i still am tbh lol) so i channeled her as me & wrote the story loosely based on my own life events. it’s interesting because it wasn’t as if i couldn’t write my own OCs; it was that i was attracted to jessica’s looks & personality & was able to curate a life that was like mine but much more interesting & exciting. 12 years old was actually one of the best years of my life lol so it wasn’t a factor of feeling lonely and unsatisfied but reveling in the bond i had with my friends thru the vessel of kpop. it was really just me being young and aspiring to be like these idols who i looked up to and saw as my role models (i still love snsd with my whole heart lol).

nowadays, Lisa is the most popular self-insert option especially for international fans; she’s pretty, thin and conventionally attractive, she’s foreign in Korea thus seen as “exotic” (from other’s pov not mine lol... exotic is not a compliment tho many believe it is), she’s talented, she’s branded as the group’s personal badass (and who wouldn’t want that?) thru the use of aesthetics from black culture (we will not dive into this tho lol) whilst simultaneously using her aegyo on variety shows (multi-faceted) and yet she’s quite a private person despite her popularity (as we can see from her instagram, everything is very vague). she’s the perfect self-insert for international fans; pretty & skinny, foreign in korea like them, a “badass”, private and mysterious and naturally gifted, hardworking and talented, wears nice clothes and presents visually-appealing aesthetics so they are able to project whatever they want onto her. she’s the main character - in the end she will get the guy (or girl), win the competition, solve the mystery etc. hell, if Lisa were an idol when I was 12 I probably would have used her as my self-insert cause she’s also se Asian lol. and it doesn’t stop at Lisa or even blackpink; we know so little of idols’ actual selves and only of what they share, all of which is pre-curated as marketing tools that they are perfect character material. in blackpink’s case we can actually pinpoint why their stans can be quite... obsessive and protective lol; as they see the girls as themselves, any sort of criticism is seen as an attack on themselves.

main character syndrome is actually something i’ve been watching videos on lol where basically ppl aspire to take on a mindset of being the “main character” of their own story or film so as to take control of their lives and live their lives to the fullest. it has its pros and has its cons but relatively it’s harmless so long as it’s not taken too seriously or deeply (cause that can breed into selfishness and narcissism lol). as nowadays we have become invested in being the “main character” or “y/n” and start applying these tropes to ourselves whether it be thru labels, fashion, aesthetics or activities we do to build up our main character profiles... it’s no surprise that with Kpop idols being at our disposal with carefully crafted personas in place, fans will project onto them and use them as self-inserts as a form of escapism when life is feeling mundane, dull and not worthy of the “main character” title.

i-spy mentions that this is most likely to happen when ppl feel lonely and unsatisfied with their lives that they can escape and take form in the idols they look up to. young girls are especially vulnerable as they are more subject to developing insecurities growing up. if they can’t be the conventionally attractive confident badass in real life, they can be lisa who’s persona encapsulates that. much of my life, I’ve been... empty and unsatisfied lol (sometimes I still am) so I understand these ppl’s attraction to projecting on idols. I think so long as it’s not too deep or taken too seriously, doing so (especially for young girls) won’t cause any harm and may actually direct their paths in life. these idols are like... their vessel into discovering themselves - what they like, don’t like etc. the reason why many ppl write fanfic or participate in role plays is because they admire qualities in these ppl and find them to be the perfect characters as they are still figuring out themselves and what they want in a significant other. i think so long as ppl acknowledge the bigger picture as they embark on these journeys & don’t sink too deeply as to lose their identities or deepen any insecurities (or fall into toxic behaviours or unhealthy habits), I think self-inserts are relatively harmless. it’s only when ppl aspire to be these idols (who are not even themselves really) and latch onto unhealthy practices to look like them, act like them etc. that self-insert behaviour becomes dangerous.
