Oh please, please, please share your headcanons for ptolemus and wren. They're my faves and I'm starved for content of any kind lol!
My time has come...
Ptolemus has a lot of tattoos. He's a relatively chill dude, not like hyper violent at all times. If his first reaction is to resort to aggression, it is because that's how he was raised. Not as much of a misanthropist as his sister in the beginning of the books, but since he doesn't gain any further alliances (other than those close to his heart) by the end of them, he does end up surpassing her. Grows restless when bored, but he's easily entertained by casual human cruelty. Lots of bro type buddies but the only one he can stand and respects is Cal. (Yes, I'll push my Cal/Tolly bros agenda to the grave bc it's ridiculous VA didn't give Cal friends wtf. Also bc of ~angst~ and ✨drama✨ purposes) Reformed manwhore. When they were children he would nick his finger or scrape his knees on purpose to have an excuse to talk to Wren.
"You know my mom/uncle/cousin could heal this way faster, right?" she would ask, struggling to perform the most basic things since her powers hadn't "bloomed" yet.
Tolly would just stare dumbly at her and try to act tough like. "You were the closest I could find 🙄. Work faster." And add a "Please 🥺" after she gives him a cut the bullshit look.
Enter Wren, deeply compassionate but bound by duty for better or for worse (at least at the beginning). Academic queen. Despite growing up in the silver court, she resents the excess of violence they indulge in. Good friends with Elane. If she wasn't naturally a healer she might have made a good spy because she's great at picking up details and reading people. Not a fan of Ptolemus whole macho act. Doesn't bat an eyelash when he aggressively flirts with her as they grow older, or at his finely crafted attempts at seduction. Like cornering her against a bookshelf and reaching a book for her while looking at her with the full force of his panty-dropper gaze.
"Anatomy, uh? Need help to study that? I may know a perfect specimen of the male sex 😏."
To which she replies without batting an eyelash. "I already have a corpse on the dissecting table, thanks." Ducks under his arm and goes away. But secretly she's having a heart attack.
(Only simp men allowed in this house btw) Ptolemus grows increasingly frustrated, angry, and infatuated with her; she's just so enthralling when her hands delicately restore that which has been wounded, when they make whole what's missing. And he gets this feeling, like when they were kids, that he needs her in his life. That, despite her solid character, she's the softness he can't even allow himself to crave. And she's way too beautiful. Wren is so gorgeous it actually hurts (quoting TS)
Wren sees too more of the boy, almost man, that's nothing but a perfectly sharpened knife for his father to use at will. She sees the tender love he has for his sister beneath a shallow cold exterior. She wants to dive in the depths of the emotions he's been so well taught to hide, to go under the metaphorical scar tissue (bc in reality they don't have those) and reach the soft flesh, the beating heart. Wren wonders what it would be like to accept the dagger inside her heart, to allow herself the possible wound of a fling with such a ruthless man. Also, undeniably, he is a perfect specimen, especially when he's covered in his rivals' blood, face twisted in a wicked smirk.
Things finally change between them when she has to restore his hand after the events of KC. As she works, all pretenses are gone. He's just glad to have an excuse to have her close, glad they are on the same side of the war, it would have been a nightmare to be parted from her. And Wren gets to see the side of him she always knew was there. With her abilities she may restore his hand, but by coming together they restore each other's souls 🥺. And they make such a hot couple.
...K I just realized this isn't exactly what you asked... so sorry anon. I got carried away. I love them 😬

Have the ROs ever had to hide their true feelings in certain situations? How did they pull it off, and why did they feel the need to mask their emotions?
Hi, Anon!
Oh, definitely. Answers below 😉
Keo: Keo regularly hides emotions. If asked why, they'd point out their blood makes it necessary - much like the Fey, Keo's stronger emotions have magical effects on the nearby environment. In reality, some of it also comes naturally. Despite having a rich emotional landscape they tend to process things internally. When they were kids, Tiane was helpful for Keo learning not to let that habit get unhealthy.
Wren: The king/queen/reigning monarch of obfuscation. It's easy for Wren to turn a conversation to the topic they want to discuss. When hiding emotions they just change the subject and carry the conversation along a different route. We're going to see some of this in chapter 9, actually 👀 Wren's also got a thing about putting on a mask to hide emotions, like in the ch 7 date.
Rin: Rin's the least skilled in this, which is ironic given how much work they put into it 😅 They either leave the situation, or go quiet and keep their mouth shut while hoping people think their odd expression is just their usual grumpy attitude. Fun fact, Rin absolutely tries to hide their emotions when given food they don't like by anyone they're close with. They sit there fighting not to make grossed out faces and just eat it 😂
Thanks for your ask!

8, 12, 16 + lightening, ice, summer, spring for the asks!
hi! (same anon again) i’ve been making my way through kings cage and i just got to the part where maven gives mare her sister’s handkerchief + the honest question. what got me is the fact that he knew when her bday was, so i was wondering; what do you think he was feeling on her bday and he couldn’t/wouldn’t visit her in her jailroom?
also! re; the dresses, do you use pictures you find online as ur inspo/starting point, or are they all original compositions?
The numbered questions will be applied to my unpublished WIP Newblood Queen, a Mareven role swap AU where Newbloods rule, Reds are still oppressed, and Silvers exist in a hazy space in between
8. What are the vibes/aesthetics of this wip?
Snakes slithering on the ground, cobwebbed crowns, blood leaking from a grinning mouth, cracks forming in the ground. For the romance, There's Nothing Holding Me Back by Shawn Mendes. For the story in general, Glory and Gore by Lorde.
12. What inspired this wip
Other fanfics. I've seen a few role swaps, and while I liked the core concept, the plot and stakes didn't diverge in a way I found satisfying. Then I sat down and challenged myself to make it interesting, and I got the core concept of Newblood rule and everything slowly clicked into place from there.
16. What do you find frustrating about this wip
It's. So. Long. It's a rewrite of all four books and I've already written the ending, it's just a matter of mustering the sustained focus
Lightning: What’s the most shocking plot twist you’ve ever come up with?
Chapter Sixteen of Lover's Curse, A Brand New Day. It was a surprise even to me!
Ice: What do you always get stuck on when writing?
Fight scenes
Summer: How do you know when you need a break from writing?
When I'm restless and unfocused, real ADHD moments there
Spring: Have you ever scrapped (a huge chunk of) a story to start over?  Why did the change come about?
Red Ruse, I had a new idea with a different emotional core, mostly revolving around Maven's character arc. A lot of the old ideas were repurposed into Ashen Spark. I'll reveal more about my initial plans when RR is finished
Non WIP questions:
Her birthday was very difficult for him due to Elara's death. He pretends to be sick. (Wren insists he's healthy, but Maven turns full death stare and she slowly backs away.) He hates himself for wanting to see her laugh, to trace the knobs of her spine and slowly sink into her, to hold his hand and listen as he tells her everything he's been holding inside. He's aching for the comfort of his mother's murderer, and he drowns that guilt in the nearest bottle of whiskey. Maven tells himself he's punishing her. In reality, he's punishing himself.
I don't use references for dresses lol, I just focus on the individual elements: fabric, applique, silhouette, jewels, etc. From there I construct something that fits the tone, the occasion, and the character wearing it

Queen Wren sighed in contentment, the cup of tea in her hands warming them up. Bringing the white flower-covered cup to her lips, she smiled slightly. She loved how peaceful this was, the wind slightly blowing, the sun beaming down on her, and the birds singing their beautiful song.
"I wonder when my little friend is going to get here"
She mumbled to herself, gently setting the teacup on the table next to her.
The bushes ruffled in front of her, a little black fluffy tail poking out of it. The small animal wiggled as it tried to get out of the bush, little noises leaving its throat as it tried to free itself.
A giggle left the queen's throat, her gloved hand covering her mouth to try not to seem disrespectful. Getting unstuck, the little animal rolled out of the bush, landing face-first in the dirt in front of Wren.
"Hello ZT"
She greeted quietly, her voice filled with sweetness and care.
The little panda lifted its head to look up at the girl, a happy noise leaving its mouth as it clung to her leg. Reaching behind its back, it pulled out a small bamboo stick and held it up for the queen.
"A present for me? You shouldn't have"
Picking up the baby panda, she gently set him on the table, the panda sending the best smile it could to her as Wren took the little bamboo stick.
"Thank you ZT"
iiiiiiiii tried :/ not the best at scenarios lmao
But happy B-day once more (for the 3rd time lol)

how many cats do you have what are their names what do they look like how many are little bastards???? cats are Too Good
Oh my god anon I hope you're ready for a long fucking post because right now we have 11-12 cats
Everyone but Luci, Fievel, and Junebug (who is our barn cat and who I dont have any pics of atm) are in some way bastard. So 9/12 score.
Tumblr media
This is Rosie. She is one of the older cats now and was born in our barn. She's very smart but also unfortunately the current Queen. Reson for bastardry: picks fights to maintain pecking order, thinks that to win playtime you have to attack the hand holding the toy/does not believe in plato's allegory of the cave.
Tumblr media
This is Aphid. Shes rosie's sister and recently went deaf, which was very frightening for her for a while but now she's not scared of the vacuum anymore so maybe this was a win. Reason for bastardry: Recently she didn't react at all to me mistaking her nipple for a tick, pulling her nipple, leading me to believe it was a deeply imbeded deer tick, and I became that customer from the "ma'am doesnt your husband have nipples??" vid.
Tumblr media
Fievel, named after the mouse that got separated from its family, because we found Fievel a full day after all their siblings. She is very shy and also attracted to ears and will try to eat your hair once she's comfortable with you. Nonbinary cat?? Reason for bastardry: not a bastard.
Tumblr media
The twins!!! We've joked about twin cats but these two are actually fucking weird okay. We tried to adopt them out with the other kittens I picked up at the cave but these two were a bonded pair and we couldn't find anyone to take them together.
Upper cat: Luci. Short for Lucifer, because he never figured out how to retract his claws. Ironically, is the only good cat in this house.
Lower cat: Smokey. He is a little bit fluffier than Luci and knows how to pull his claws in. He is also a huge bastard and 0 repentence. Reason for bastardry: pees in containers. Not on the floor!! Just containers. Like the dog bowls. Wants to put his paw on my face.
Tumblr media
Susie (with luci in the background). This is Mom's Cat, because previously Susie thought everything in the world but mom was out to murder her, including me, who has known her literally her whole life. It took literal years for her to accept she liked petted. I say this with love: something mentally didnt happen in this cat, and only This Year after not murdering her when she needed to go to the emergency vet did we have a breakthrough. Reason for bastardry: pees on things she wants removed. Unfortunately, it works, reinforcing this behavior.
Tumblr media
This is BC. it stands for "black cat", because when we got him we were running out of names. He has so many issues but has recently stopped thinking we are trying to steal his blanket when we try to shift blankets under him. Reason for bastardry: picks fights with literally everyone, for no clear reason. Stinky.
Tumblr media
Trying to keep under the tumblr image limit, these four helpfully are cuddling. Right to left
Jane (has orange on her forehead): Fievel and Susie's extroverted sister. She is very cute and appears to know it. Reason for bastardry: a serial killer who admires the Stephen's Island Wren cat.
Max (orange cat): You know that post about how all cats are autistic? this one may in fact be the cat version of autistic. Has so many sensory issues, but has recently agreed to cuddling with humans. Obsessed with bringing socks downstairs. Once they're downstairs he doesnt care anymore. Reason for bastardry: normally is a good boy but suddenly will pee in corners and chase other cats. Sock theif!!!!
Oscar (gray tabby): named after the hot dog. The oldest cat currently. Wishes he was a mom very much but also hates new cats so it's a weird ride bringing kittens home. Probably has a neurological thing but we dont know what it is specifically, only that he Cannot Learn and the other cats tolerate the same behavior from him more than they do from others. Snuggle monster. Reason for bastardry: Steals my food!!!! Destroyed all chances for trainability in this house, because if the other cats see oscar is doing something, they can do it too, right?
Wobble (gray cat) : was picked up with our barn cat June, who was desperately trying to escape Wobble's company. Has probably mild cerebellar hypoplasia. She wobbles when she walks. No sense of personal space. Is the only one who can apparently communicate with Oscar, because they are both on the same wavelength. Nothing is going in behind those eyes but threatening elevator music.
Tumblr media
Reason for bastardry: innumerable.

Do you have any information on Clìodnha and Mac Lir? I feel drawn to both of them, specifically her, when I look up gaelpol things but I don't know if it's wishful thinking and making up some UPG ~*~feelings~*~ (exmormon culty baggage is the main culprit here, I have a lot of hangups over "Is this Spiritual Contentment or Mental Gymnastics") Is there anything that you think I need to know considering Clìodnha or Mac Lir and how would you suggest building a relationship with them?
Hello (again?), Anon! I know less about Clíodhna than I do about Manannán mac Lir, but I was able to dig out a presentation by Morgan Daimler for the Year With Our Gods conference put on by Land, Sea, Sky Travel that discusses her. (If you haven’t run across them already, Morgan is a great resource for mythology- they have some books published through amazon and have a blog here, and Land Sea Sky Travel regularly organizes conferences & presentations on all sorts of things related to Gaelic and Brythonic Polytheism- they’re on facebook here and have their own website here)
Anyway, re: what I was able to find about Clíodhna, she is one of the figures in Irish mythology that isn’t explicitly named as one of the Tuatha Dé, but per Dáithí Ó hOgáin (another scholar worth looking up) her name may mean “the territorial one”, and seems like she may be a sovereignty goddess for Munster and the shoreline of County Cork, specifically. They actually have a particular wave in County Cork that is named for her, Clíodhna’s Wave, although I wasn’t able to find out what makes it so special. She has an association in her stories with doomed love, and drowns in at least two stories, one while leaving the Otherworld with a broken heart, and the other drowning while traveling with her lover, so between that and the wave bearing her name, it seems that she may have a motif of drowning/being swept away. She takes the form of a wren in some stories, and is also attended by magical birds whose song can heal the wounded and lull people to sleep. Beyond that, she is claimed as an ancestor and bean sidhe by the McCarthys and the O’Keefes, and is credited in more modern folklore as the queen of the mná sidhe.
Aaaand that’s pretty much all I’ve got for her, sorry. :/ I know that maryjones.us has a great collection of mythology, and the CELT database is definitely worth a look too, if you’re trying to find out more about Clíodhna. I don’t really have any experience with her myself, so I can’t offer any advice on how to build a relationship with her in particular beyond what I would suggest for getting to know any deity, which I’ll go into in a sec.
For Manannán, I can say from personal experience and from SPG I’ve heard from other GaelPols that Manannán seems to be one of the gods most interested in outreach to welcome new potential GaelPols, so it makes sense that you’re feeling drawn to him too! In my experience, he tends to be lighthearted and approachable. He is a poet, loves wordplay, and whenever I encounter him in dreamwork seems to be Up To Something (or more charitably, on the move). I’m about as landlocked as you can get, so in lieu of an ocean to go to, I’ve had good results with making a cup of tea for myself and one for him (it’s a drowned sacrifice in microcosm!) and just spending some quiet time together. I’ve seen other people talk about spending time with Manannán while doing a cleansing ritual or taking a long bath (six of one, half a dozen of another imo), or running into him in dreams. Basically, he is an intensely liminal god, so even if you can’t get to a seashore to try to spend time with him, there are plenty of between-spaces you can try, if just sitting with a cup of tea doesn’t work for you.
With either of them, or any other deities you are interested in building a relationship with, trying to learn more about them is a great place to start, but taking time to listen to the spiritual impressions you get is extremely valuable too. Spiritual discernment can be a scary concept if you’ve been gaslit by religious groups that you should have been able to trust already, but it’s still an important skill to build. If you don’t trust your own ability to tell the difference between you telling yourself what you want to hear and interaction with the gods at this point, it might be worth going through an intermediary. If you practice some form of divination, doing a reading can help you fine-tune whatever impressions you get. If you don’t, I’d recommend Allec @nicstoirm as a GaelPol diviner who has helped my wife sort out some delicate conversations with gods in the past. Trusting yourself enough to tell the difference between your internal voice and Someone Else can take work, even without baggage from unhealthy religious environments to sort through; try to be patient with yourself in the meantime. I had the same issue for a while, but you can gain in confidence with practice (and distance from the cult-y bullshit).
Basically, the getting to know a deity triad that I would offer is this: read their stories, try to make space to honor and think about them, and listen to your own thoughts and feelings about what you are learning and what you experience. It might be helpful to keep some sort of record that you can check yourself against if you’re worried about self-doubt and baggage getting in your way, too.
I hope this helps- feel free to stop by again if you have more questions, and good luck!

It’s here!
Tumblr media
My book is finally available for purchase on Kindle here . It will be available in paperback in just a few days. I really can’t believe this day is here!
So what is this book about? Glad you asked!
Former foster kid Chloe Wren had never been to church a day in her life until she stepped through the doors of Community Fellowship at the age of eighteen. She quickly becomes entangled in the complex world of a pastor's family through her relationship with Micah Barrett, the troubled younger son of the church's pastor. Six years later, her relationship with both Micah and the church have been broken seemingly beyond repair. Yet the son she and Micah share has a childlike faith that just might be the key to redemption for them all.
I really hope some of you will purchase this book! At $3.99 it’s cheaper than most of the menu at Starbucks. Plus, you don’t get romance and angst in a latte. And if you enjoy Chloe and Micah’s story, please leave a review on Amazon!

18. Give us one thing from your muse’s wishlist that you really want to write in a thread! 🖤
I don’t know about a wishlist...but I did my best. Thank you, anon!!! Under the cut, love!
Wren Blake
Probably her Nemesis ties. She has the scales tattooed on her back shoulders because of something that tragically happened in her past where a drunk driver walked away with a slap on the wrist after she had suffered a great loss in the process. Only to have the same man, a few years later, die of liver cancer because of overdrinking. To her, that’s justice, and it’s a bit where the Nemesis part really starts. She ends up giving justice to her abusive father by pulling the plug against doctor advice, and letting him die...and it gets buried a bit when she goes to Hope County, but honestly...it gets worse as the Holy War continues. John Seed really brings it out of her whenever she confesses little by little...and then she becomes the Judge of Eden’s Gate. She judges those who are worthy, whether justice should be swift or if it should be forgiving...but it’s all her personal view of said justice. You find that it’s not justice at all, it’s retribution, and her wrath will absolutely drive it when someone is unworthy. It’s why she has the Nemesis ties and not Themis. While yes, there are some similarities that Wren posses of both gods, Nemesis is the true symbolism. Even in her Judgement commission, where justice is supposed to be blinded...she has lace covering her eyes so she can see through (the aesthetic was definitely a plus), because she doesn’t give blind justice...her own views, wrath, and judgement is from her eyes. And I never get tired of talking about it, to be honest. It’s one of my favorite things about her. But it was big on her tattoo wishlist, so I’m gonna count it.
Whitney Seed
Her absolute drive to be something more. All her life, she was pretty much groomed into being the perfect, religious daughter Nancy always wanted, and so her marrying Joseph Seed played into that...therefore her becoming Mother of Eden’s Gate was just writing on the wall. But there’s a lot more to Whit than just being a trophy housewife that’s a good face for the Project, and she doesn’t get treated any better than how she’s perceived. She fully believes she deserves power, has the right to power, and can wield power easily, and she can. Her not being an official Herald is a slap to the face that’s added to a long list of reasons Joseph pays for his wrongs against her with his life. She wants to be treated, to be better than what she is now, because she deep down knows it’s true. Eventually, she absoltuely rises to the absolute queen she is, and kills Joseph. But it’s something that weighs on her until that moment happens.
Evune Lavellan
(Kinda jumping to a different fandom, bear with me) I would say that for her, its her view and passion of her people. Evune was born to a city elf that was pretty much a concubine or consort to a noble. Once the noble realized that her mother had fallen in love with a hunter from a Dalish clan, he killed them both and took her. So, Evune has meddled with the bard life, she’s learned to not be seen and to get secrets, and was pretty much a pet for the noble to show off like she was some animal on display. After his run in with the Red Jenny’s, she escapes and lives on the streets for awhile, helping thieves guilds and such before she’s able to be reunited with her father’s clan (therefore being taken in by Athera’s mother and father). So that being said, Evune is very passionate about her people and their beliefs, wanting the city elves to leave the cities, and join the Dalish where she fully believes that together, they can be stronger and at least have more freedom. That the city elves should want that freedom. She gets frustrated by it often, because she’s lived that life, and she doesn’t understand why anyone would want to stay in the alienages and slums of the city, where humans regularly make them victims.

hey author! i just have a few simple lore questions to ask, i hope you don't mind.
does everyone in the leas universe have magical abilities? if so, it doesn't necessarily mean everyone uses magic? (for example, rin has magic but chooses not to use it, if i'm not mistaken)
are there kings and queens in this universe? even if they won't be real characters in the story, is there some sort of royalty in leas or any other city? i know we have nobles and lords, such as wren and virano, so far.
how do relationships with people from two different cities work, specifically between leas and delusin? i'm sure it's not a big deal but it was mentioned that a treaty between the two cities were made so is it difficult to get settled in that sense? is it looked down upon? etc.
this isn't a lore question but what inspired you to make this game? it's so creative and interesting and even the names of things and the way you describe them is out of this world, i wanted to know where you got these ideas from?
thank you so much for answering and have a great day/night! ❤️
Hi Anon!
I'm more than happy to answer, and thank you for asking such fun questions! I hope you won't mind how long my answers are❣️ And I hope you have a great day/night as well!
Everyone in the universe has the ability to do magic, yes! Which mostly stems from me reading books as a kid where only special people had magic and thinking 'that's so unfair!' 😂 How good someone's magic is is a lot like how good someone's ability to learn a new language is in our world - there's natural talent, but it also matters how much you practice/study.
There are no kings/queens! Each city's a little different but the basic structure is that a group of people form a city's Council, and they're the ones "in charge." The Council is a mix of the leaders of the city's various communities, which lends itself to a mix of both nobles and non-nobles. I'm hoping to put more about this into the game itself, later on.
It's a little difficult to have a relationship with someone from another city mainly because travel between cities is so dangerous most people never do it 😅 The exceptions to this are diplomats, nobles, and some merchants. And Den agents, of course 😉 Marriage is one of the few ways a regular person could wind up in another city. Someone meets a visiting merchant, say, and falls in love with them and the couple picks a city to settle down in. It's also much easier to get travel papers to return to a city you were born in, if for whatever reason you managed to leave it and want to go back. Inter-city marriages aren't looked down on, but people do recognize those relationships are challenging. Leas has a very communal culture, so someone moving from another city could expect a lot of support from their neighbors upon arriving, in most cases. As far as Leas-Dalusin relationships, take everything above and make it a little easier, lol. There are more regular trade caravans and slightly safer routes between the cities.
As for the final question, first of all thank you, that's so kind of you to say! My initial reaction to this was "idk I just daydream it up and if I hit a plot hole I bang my head against it until I figure it out?" 😂 (That one option in ch 7 of "no I can just think harder! My brain is a hammer and everything can be a nail 😃" is literally just a self-roast 🤣) But giving it more thought, I think it's just that I love things that are wild and weird and beautiful, so I wanted to write about the Fey. For naming things: I tend to favor the letters V, K, L and vowels for names in Leas. I throw in a lot of A's in Fey language and try to let the sounds feel rhythmic/musical (at least by my perception). I deviate from those general rules constantly because there are only so many letters/syllables in English and eventually you realize "I've spent 3 hours trying to name this character I need to get back to actually writing." 🤣 But I try to roughly stick to those rules.
Thank you so much for your ask!

you give the vibe that you sit at the coffee shop window in a beanie reading some royalty love story, while giving a slight smile to anyone that walks in, and at the table where you can go get napkins, creamer, sticks, lids, and spice, you can't find the trashcan, so you use the wrapper as a bookmark.
holy fucking shit-
this is actually so accurate!
thank you so much! this makes me so happy :)))) /gen

This got a little long, so please bear with me. Sending as a submission to minimize everyone’s suffering. In response to anon’s question about sexual dimorphism in species:
It sounds like you are struggling not only with whether to implement sexual dimorphism in your species, but also how to handle gender roles/expression in general. Gender is a complex topic that people tend to have strong feelings about, so this is understandable. I am by no means an expert, but this is a topic I have done some research on so I figured I would write something up in case anyone else found it helpful.
First, let’s consider sexual dimorphism in general. Obviously there are many real-world species that exhibit sexual dimorphism, but why do some species evolve this trait and not others? Generally speaking, species that exhibit greater physical differences between sexes also exhibit greater behavioral differences between sexes. Birds are a great example of this! In peafowl, a species with a high degree of sexual dimorphism, the males display and try to mate with as many females as possible, while females try to select the best male and raise their chicks alone. In birds like macaws, where sexual dimorphism is virtually nonexistent, the parents are socially monogamous and both work to raise chicks.
People tend to assume that sexual dimorphism means big, flashy, aggressive males and small, drab, timid females, but this is not always the case. Female spotted hyenas are larger and more socially dominant than males. Male anglerfish are hilariously tiny compared to females, with a much reduced lifespan. Some species even exhibit sexual polymorphism, with more than two types! Red-backed fairy wrens can fall into any one of four categories, depending on age and environmental conditions: black breeding males, brown breeding males, brown auxiliary males, or females. Or you could look at bees, which have reproductive females (queens), nonreproductive females (workers), and males (drones). Including sexual dimorphism (or polymorphism) in your species doesn’t automatically mean you need to make them follow a strict gender binary.
Of course, sex and gender are not necessarily the same thing. Physical sex is determined by the presence of specific primary and secondary sex characteristics, but gender is a term used to describe the societal expectations placed on members of either sex. For example, in western society, men are generally expected to work outside the home and support their families, while women are expected to work inside the home and raise children. In any society, there will be individuals who do not conform to traditional expectations of gender, or who identify outside their assigned gender.
In your original ask, you asked if it was a good idea to include a disclaimer that physical sex does not define your species’ gender. You could, but it would be a little redundant, because it is already true for any species smart and social enough to have a concept of gender in the first place. An individual’s gender is not determined by physical sex characteristics, but by how they themselves identify and how they are perceived and treated by society. A better question to ask yourself would be, how does my species conceptualize gender? Do they consider it a simple male-female binary, or do they acknowledge third-gender or intermediate-gender categories? Do they consider it a static quality that is fixed from birth, or do they allow people to transition freely? What expectations or cultural norms are associated with each gender? Asking yourself these questions will give your worldbuilding greater depth, and allow others greater freedom when creating characters.
Sorry this got so long! Ultimately, there is no right or wrong answer for whether to include sexual dimorphism in your species. It’s important to remember that your goal with worldbuilding shouldn’t necessarily be to create a perfect utopia where sexism, homophobia, and transphobia don’t exist, but to create a unique, believable, and fun setting.
You could have a species of sexist douchebags who refuse to recognize any form of gender expression that deviates from a strict binary, so long as you still portray gender-variant individuals compassionately and show how their society’s strict rules impact their life. Likewise, you could have a society with sexual dimorphism totally different from that of humans, but if you portray them in a creepy fetishistic way people are still going to find it weird and offensive (hi, milkstuds). Just like with any other aspect of worldbuilding, portraying sexual dimorphism and gender sensitively comes down to doing research, considering the environmental constraints of your setting, and recognizing the diversity of human experience.
