Pro Wrestling Illustrated: 1995 THE YEAR IN WRESTLING. March 1996
WRESTLER OF THE YEAR: DIESEL 24,209 votes
Had Diesel decided to be content with the WWF World tag team or Intercontinental titles, no one would have held it against him. After all, he already had come much further than nearly anyone had expected.
It isn’t what Diesel expected. He thirsted for more, and he got what he wanted. He also received Wrestler of the Year honors for 1995.
Three days after the 1994 Survivor Series, Diesel obliterated Bob Backlund in eight seconds to capture the WWF World title. All he’s done since then is prove his surprising victory was no accident. Simply put, he was the most dominant wrestler of 1995.
Along the way to earning the top spot in the “PWI 500”, he beat Owen Hart, Bam Bam Bigelow, and Jeff Jarrett. He has beaten Mabel, Sid Vicious, Waylon Mercy, King Kong Bundy, and Tatanka. And he has beaten Shawn Michaels.
“That did it for me,” wrote Sally Rutherford of Albany, New York. “When Diesel beat Shawn at WrestleMania, that showed he had arrived. He was a true champion.”
A champion who until late-1993 was nothing more than a bodyguard for Michaels. Diesel had done fairly well as Vinnie Vegas in WCW, but he hadn’t shown any indication that he could be a dominant titleholder.
“I would have figured a dozen guys would’ve won the World title before Diesel,” said Johnny Gunn, who wrestled him in WCW. “I always knew he was good but I didn’t think he was that good. He either made a dramatic improvement in a short time, or he held back for a long time.”
Diesel’s dominance was threatened when he hurt his elbow in his bout with Vicious at In Your House I, but successful surgery enabled him to bounce back after only a few weeks. He was determined not to let an injury spoil his amazing run.
The World champion enhanced his reputation further when he again formed a successful tag team with Michaels and nearly won the WWF tag title from Yokozuna and Davey Boy Smith and In Your House III, Had Owen Hart not got involved, Diesel and Michaels might have been tag team champions to this day.
It’s too early to consider Diesel among the all-time great WWF World champions but he’s off to a good start on his path toward greatness. It’s going to be fun watching this powerhouse try to maintain that level of excellence in 1996.
RUNNERS-UP
SHAWN MICHAELS: 16,091 votes
First runner-up:   Had Michaels defeated Diesel at WrestleMania, he might have been voted Wrestler of the Year. “The Heartbreak Kid” Had an outstanding year, defending the Intercontinental title against foes like Dean Douglas, Jeff Jarrett, Davey Boy Smith, and even SMW’s Buddy Landell before injuries forced him to give it up in October. He also won the Royal Rumble.
STING: 12,801 votes
Second runner-up: The “Stinger” held the WCW U.S. heavyweight belt for most of the year, and he was a lot more active than former World champion Hulk Hogan. He continued to demonstrate that he’s more than a charismatic personality. He is a flat-out terrific all-around wrestler, and plenty of fans don’t want the rest of us to forget that. Trust us, we won't.
HULK HOGAN: 11,349 votes
Third runner-up: One would expect the man who was WCW World champion for most of the year to finish higher in the voting, but many fans apparently remembered that the “Hulkster” once went five months without defending the belt. Still, on some nights, there isn’t a greater wrestler in the world. Those nights just don't come as frequently as they once did.
VOTES FOR OTHERS (8,652)
Some of the top vote-getters who did not capture a runner-up spot include: Bret Hart, Antonio Inoki, Mitsuhara Misawa, Razor Ramon, Sabu, The Sandman, and The Undertaker.

Wrestlemania 40
No matter how hard I tried to avoid it, I always found myself stuck in the same position. Punk and I would ‘make up’ just for him to say something stupid to make me go back to hating him. When Phill got injured I hated myself for how it made me feel. I felt like he deserved it. I found it hilarious but at the same time depressing. This was karma biting him in the ass. Karma’s a bitch, he should have known better. He should have known that he coudn’t just show up in WWE 10 years after getting fired and expect to win the world title in the main event of Wrestlemania! I told myself I wound’t fall into his traps. I had to be strong, I had to learn to fight the devil. The thing about the devil is that he isn’t a little red man with horns and a tail. He can be beautiful. He’s a fallen angel who used to be God’s favourite.
After the Royal Rumble, I didn’t watch any of the WWE products. I had my own things to worry about. Instead of crying myself to sleep, mourning the man I once loved I would write. Instead of bottling up my emotions, I would release them in the form of poetry. No matter how hard I tried it seemed like a part of Punk would forever be a part of me. I tried to forget, I tried to forgive but I just coudn’t. I wanted to run away, I wanted to disappear, I wanted to die. I felt sorry for myself.
I would go on walks in the park to clear my mind but all it ever did was create a dark cloud above my head. I would watch the mothers playing with their children, I saw how happy they looked. I wanted to be like them. I accepted long ago I would never get to have that. Maybe that’s the part of Phill that lived inside me. The scar on my abdomen reminded me of what we could have had.
It was no secret that Phill and I had an age gap. I was only 23 when I began going out with him. My parents didn’t approve of our relationship. Not because he was 34 and I was 23, not because he had tattoos, Phill was even straight edge. My parents just simply didn’t like him. Why? I’m not sure. He took care of me. He loved me. He taught me how to love again, something I never thought I would be able to do.
He would hold me close as he kissed my scars, telling me that he would never hurt me but when in reality he would cause me the greatest pain. He left me no choice, I hated who he had become. I handed Phill divorce papers and wondered if I was doing the right thing. Was I really willing to throw 10 years of marriage down the drain?  Despite us being divorced for some time now I can't seem to get him out of my head. He won't leave me alone, claiming I need you and I do need you. I miss you, I miss your touch, I miss the way you would make me feel but you can never know that. Now I sit here admiring the fresh wound on my wrist, a wound you promised you would never cause yet you did.
I wondered what Phill would say about the person I’ve become. I know he would be disappointed in me. I had fallen back into my old habits. I had become that mentally unstable little girl he met years ago. Maybe that’s why my parents didn’t like him. Maybe they thought he was taking advantage of me. Maybe they thought he only wanted me because of my issues, how could play the hero in this story. I felt safe with him. I felt protected. But that was then, this is now. I need to be my own hero in this story. The thing about this story is that it’s not one about puppies and rainbows, this story is cold and dark, filled with horror.
It was weird seeing Phil at wrestlemania. 10 years ago at wrestlemania 30 I sat in the front row cheering on my soon to be husband. Looking back on it I was happy, I was free. There was something about being 24 with the love of your live that made you feel like you could take on the world. Now at 34 I sit watching at home, a bitter sweet taste on my tongue. This was wrong but it was also right. I was happy for him, but of course those feelings would never last. He just had to go and shit on me and my family once again. This time for absolutely no reason. Everyone had moved on, everyone was over it, or so I thought.
By now I knew whenever Phil and I were trending at the same time it was not for good reasons. I didn’t want to know why we were trending but it would help to explain why all of a sudden AEW was going to air the backstage footage from All In. I wasn’t surprised that Phill continued to shit on the company and myself. I was just tired of his games, moments like this reminded me why I coudn’t forgive him. Why I wound’t get back together with him. Wrestlemania weekend was his weekend, his time. Why did he spend it all talking about the past. It’s not like he can go back and change everything. He was just making everything worse.
When I found out the All In footage was being aired I thought it was a joke. Knowing my brothers they would say they would air the footage and the ‘aired footage’ would be the two of them backstage eating donuts with fake fighting sounds in the background. Matthew and Nicholas assured me that it was indeed the real footage that was being aired. They didn’t want to air the footage, it was Tony Khan that insisted on showing the world what really happened. I felt sick, I knew what happened that night. I yelled in the man’s face. If they wanted to paint Phil as the bad guy the should be showing the footage from the brawl out. Everyone knew that all of this would add fuel to the fire but when TK want’s something to happen it happens. Surprisingly he was the most mad about this whole situation. So here I sat in the EVP’s office, being forced to relive a day I wanted to forget forever.
This should end everything right? Now that everything is out there for the whole world to see they should know Phil was always the bad guy in this situation right? There is nothing else he can say or do to make things even worse than they already are right????
An: This wasn't originally going to have a pt 3. If ya'll would like a pt 4 feel free to leave a very descripted request in my inbox

Okay time for Seth to come back
youtube
They cut it out but after he says the "it is what it is" but Corey asks him where his head's at and Seth says after a second knee injury rught before Wrestlemania he sometimes thinks "maybe he deserves this"
And he's being like, emotionally vulnerable and the crowd starts a CM Punk chant
Shut uppppp
Hunter to Seth just now: "I used you up and I spit you out! That's life! Man up, get over it!"
He did the same thing to Randy, Randy did the same thing to Cody, now Seth's feeling that and like
Having feelings about Seth reaching out to Cody because he's like, at his lowest point rn and maybe he doesn't know where else to go
Tumblr media
I just noticed the Dusty polkadots on Bailey's gear and then I remembered her and Cody just won the Royal Rumble together and started CRYING lmao
youtube
The sherpa lined leather jacket with no shirt, jeans, and cowboy boots is such a iconic look
It's so sexy of him
LA Knight is here to help calm him down, Cody's trying to beat this man's ass for NOTHING
Tumblr media
She's crying and he's yanking her to the back
Toxic Cody is here
Cody hanging out with his new friends in Japan (idk how in character this is supposed to be yet)
Also like, the timing of Seth's rock bottom (and maybe reaching out to Cody) and Cody's slip back into toxic insecure Cody is Very Interesting
youtube
Cody you absolute mad lad
youtube
youtube
"If you know Cody Rhodes you'll know that he can be his own worst enemy (oh boy can he lmao) once he gets frustrated he gets very sloppy"
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The american flag contact is a wild choice
I don't think I've ever seen this pin technique before
youtube
He's so stupid omfg
"You're not taller than me! You're not gonna win a fight!"

IT'S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN!!!
January 28th is my birthday, dubbed Meimiday several years ago by my friends (I think it was hojo who started it). Over a decade ago, however, when asked what I’d like to see I kinda just went “Why don’t you just beat some games?” and so the festivities truly began. Most of us frequent the Backloggery, so it’s kinda easy to see why it has snowballed~

It's wild to see all the denialism on Twitter about AEW selling 50,000 tickets for Wembley Stadium. Some people insist the building will only be set up for 40k, or that only scalpers are buying the tickets, or even that Tony Khan selling the tickets to himself (which doesn't even make sense).
I get that a lot of weirdos want to predict a massive failure for AEW, and they're not too picky how they come up with their evidence. But with this, there's not much point bullshitting people about something that will be common knowledge in four months. On August 27, that stadium is either going to be full or not. Either half the seats will be blocked off by a stage, or not. There's going to be huge swaths of empty seats where the secondhand market couldn't give tickets away, or there won't be. We'll all be able to see this with our own eyes.
Once we see the crowd, then there'll be room to debate the squishier details. If Wembley looks full you'll get people arguing that it isn't really a sellout, and that AEW fudged the numbers like WWE does. If there's only 35,000 people, there'll be debates about whether AEW had to get a packed house, or if it's still a success as long as the show turns a profit. I'm sure the attendance estimates will always be as controversial as those of Wrestlemania III. But for now, it's pointless to tell me that no one is going to be in that building, when the simplest way to find out is to wait and see.

So *allegedly* the plans for WrestleMania include: Usos vs Zowens, Gunther vs Sheamus III/Gunther vs Drew, Charlotte vs Bianca, Becky vs Ronda, but the interesting thing is Seth Rollins vs Drew McIntyre/Cody Rhodes for the WWE championship on Night 1 and Roman Reigns vs The Rock/Cody Rhodes for the Universal championship on Night 2.
Apparently the idea is, if they can’t get the Rock, they’ll do Roman vs Cody, Seth vs Drew and Gunther vs Sheamus III, and if they do get The Rock they’ll go with Roman vs the Rock, Seth vs Cody and Gunther vs Drew for the IC Title on Night 1 or 2. The one thing I don’t get is how are they going to split the championships before then?

So if the get The Rock, we get Seth losing again and Roman retaining both championships. If they don’t get the Rock, we get Cody going for a title he doesn’t deserve, probably definitely winning.
Honestly, I just want Seth Rollins to win one of the both championships and main event Mania. Because that’s what he deserves.

In 1986, boxed Mr. T at WrestleMania II…Piper was disqualified for shoving the referee and bodyslamming T (“Things got out of hand; it was time for that match to end”)…Took some time off to star in the movie Body Slam (“A star is born”)...Returned to the WWF in late 1986 and feuded with Adrian Adonis…Adonis had taken over “Piper’s Pit,” renamed it “The Flower Shop,” and hired Bob Orton away from Piper (“Mess with Piper and you’re asking for trouble”)...Because a fan favorite when Adonis, Jimmy Hart, Orton, and Don Muraco attacked him on a “Flower Shop” segment…Piper later destroyed the set (“They had it coming”)...Retired after defeating Adonis in a hair vs. hair match at WrestleMania III…Resumed his career in Hollywood and got strong reviews for his starring role in John Carpenter’s They Live (“There’s nothing I can’t do”)...Returned to the WWE at WrestleMania V to host a live “Piper’s Pit” with guests Brother Love and Morton Downey Jr….Ran off both men, reaffirming his popularity (“Obviously, the fans haven’t forgotten”)...Returned to the ring as a substitute for Jake Roberts in May and pinned Ted DiBiase three times in three bouts…Made his official return on June 30 in Montreal and scored a shocking pinfall victory over Randy Savage (“The hardest part of that match was having to look at Scary Sherri!”)...Recently replaced Bobby Heenan as co-host of Prime Time Wrestling, the WWF’s weekly two-hour program on USA Network (“When you have a talent like Piper around, you’ve got to use him”).... Will most likely try to juggle simultaneous careers in the ring and in Hollywood (“Why not do both? Why deprive the people?”)
[Roddy Piper pounces on Mr. T during their boxing match at WrestleMania II in 1986. The “Rowdy Scot” is back in the WWF as a wrestler and commentator.]

Wrestlemania Main Event Reviews - Wrestlemania III
Hulk Hogan (c) def. Andre the Giant w/ Bobby Heenan for the WWF World Heavyweight Championship in 12:01
That massive crowd! Heenan has a dashing suit on the ring buggy thing! Ventura’s got all the stats on these two, it’s a real clash of titans! The first match that feels really big. Failed body slam early on, Andre is doing his best, hitting lots of clubbing blows. Andre is plodding about on top, which isn’t shocking considering his condition and how much wine he reportedly had pre-match to numb the pain. Hogan slips out of a punch in the corner, there’s a flurry from Hogan but a big boot from the corner puts Andre back on top. There is a very long bear hug where Hogan is still grounded and it could certainly look better. There’s the arm drop spot in it where there’s some confusion it seems with how many times Hogan’s arm dropped as Ventura seems to think it’s over, but Hulk powers out, attempts the shoulder blocks but that’s a terrible idea. Andre hits some good chops and some bad kicks, then evasion from Hogan means he headbutts the ring post. The concrete is exposed by Hogan, they end up in the ring, there’s a double down, Hulk Up, and that slam heard around the world! Big stuff. Leg drop and three count! Crowd goes banana, Hogan poses, Andre rides off fuming.
Pros: Spectacle, big moments, well structured with the circumstances. Cons: A tad plodding, Andre is having a hard time, can be slow.
It’s all about the gravitas  here, and there is a lot of it, this match would not be the same without it. Not much of an in-ring clinic, saved by the scene and build, but nearly 35 years later, it can only do so much. Possibly the biggest match ever, but far from the best.
