Jibbers and Rohl tell Tannin to leave some money, so they reluctantly leave behind 10gp. Sollux asks Tannin to go get “The Cat” -- which is codeword for their pet mouse.
Tannin agrees. The party goes outside, so Tannin takes the opportunity to re-pocket the 10gp.
Meanwhile, the party heads outside and is greeted by the disquieting sight of an imp standing across the road. Sollux refuses to move closer, sensing pending annoyance. The gnomes, less versed in the ways of imps, move forward. El Gallo is distracted by a dire pigeon, which, in turn, distracts Tannin as they re-join the group.
The imp introduces himself as Tinkle Dinklepinkle, and promises he has wares if they have coin. He offers them a gold plated sword, gold plated armor, a gold plated potion, some gold plated poison, and sleeping drought. Why would he ruin a perfectly good sleeping drought by coating it in gold?
El Gallo is investigating the pigeon when it poops on his mask. Feeling disrespected, El Gallo fails his first attempt at wrestling it. The pigeon begins to fly away to Tannin’s mocking laughter, so El Gallo chucks a die from his bag. He strikes the pigeon perfectly, causing it to start to fall. El Gallo catches the pigeon, then suplexes it, breaking it’s tiny neck. As a victory dance, El Gallo tosses the pigeon over the roof of the inn.
Rohl Eigh notices that Tinkle has snakes for feet -- and is somehow, the only one of them to do so. He also notes that Tinkle’s snakes are purple. Rohl Eigh points this out, so Jibbers tries to ask Tinkle about it. He gestures to Jonny, but Sollux has literally just released Jonny into a patch of grass. Tinkle admits his feet do not look like Sollux.
The conversation with Tinkle takes over. Sollux rolls his eyes and joins the gnomes and Rohl Eigh. El Gallo and Tannin soon do as well. Unlike Sollux, however, Tannin grows bored and leaves, while Sollux tries to assist them.
Tinkle offers to play a game and provide them with a riddle. The game is two truths and one lie, and no matter how much Sollux flirts with him, Tinkle does not relent and reveal which one is which. Neverless, he reveals three things: A woman with beautiful hair bought a poison but was giving a sleeping drought (hee hee); his wares are poor quality shit covered in gold (hee hee); and the King Tovak is dead (hee hee hee).
The party argue for literally 30 minutes trying to determine which is a lie. Sollux believes they would have heard if Tovak is dead, and Garrum seconds that opinion. Jibbers believes the woman wasn’t trying to poison them since she sicced snakes on them, and El Gallo seconds this notion. Rohl Eigh agrees with both.
The riddle was:
Beware, beware
A woman with beautiful hair
Beware, beware
The cubs are always near the bear
Beward, beware
((completely forgot this last line))
Tinkle disappears and a pageboy appears, summoning them to the Mayor’s personal estate. Sollux, Tannin, El Gallo and Jibbers go back into the inn to see if they can find out what happened, armed with the knowledge of Tinkle’s matching feet. Rohl Eigh and Garrum head to the mayor.
Jibbers asks someone stronger to break open the wall. With a cackle, Sollux sets the wall aflame, revealing his pyromania. They investigate the cinders and realize that the snakes must have manifested from inside the wall. They all leave. It’s only halfway to the mayor’s house that Jibbers asks if they doused the flames.
They didn’t.
The mayor informs them that the town next to theirs has been silent for a week, and asks them to go investigate. Sollux, with aid from his allies, informs the mayor that Tinkle burned down the inn in an attempt to murder them. El Gallo reveals he murdered a pigeon, which turns out to be Barbara, the Mayor’s beloved pet. Tannin talks the mayor back into a calm state of mind and they accept the quest.
The party goes back to the inn to collect Barbara’s corpse, only to find the townspeople trying to save the inn. They pluck a charred corpse from the roof and El Gallo realizes it’s a small snack, not the dire pigeon he so heartlessly murdered. Sollux has an idea and goes to ask the townsfolk if they’ve seen Torley Black -- the woman introduced them as having beautiful hair, and no other description except she’s a gorgeous elf. Rohl Eigh then uses his criminal contact to locate a fellow guildsman and bribe him into spying on Torley.
The party stocks up and head out, choosing to complete the mayor’s mission, and hoping to find evidence of foul play.
