summary: Nathan and Y/N have always been best friends. When their own separate love lives seem to be fleeting, Nathan comes up with a stupid idea. They should have a baby.
Due to their increasingly busy schedules, Y/N didn’t hesitate to come over to Nathan’s house. They rarely saw each other so to find some time to hang out, well she wasn’t going to pass up that opportunity.
The drive to his apartment was something that she knew better than the back of her own hand. Cause after all, who actually spent that much time looking at the back of their own hand.
It wasn’t long before the girl was walking into his apartment complex, her lanyard in her hands as she greeted the doorman stan at the front. She had been to Nathan’s place so many times before that the man knew just to let her in when she arrived. He may not have been supposed to, but Y/N was a charmer. No one could say ‘no’ to her.
Heading up to the apartment, Y/N bounced around the elevator- smiling as she bobbed her head along to the pop song coming through the scratchy speakers. The words stumbled off her tongue, some coming off earlier than they were supposed to.
She couldn’t help but be bubbly. She was just happy. Everything in her life was working, sure there were more than a few days that didn’t go her way, but she was so tired of being miserable. She spent all of her youth being miserable- comparing herself to others and trying to make something of herself, but now she was an adult and she had a fantastic career, she deserved to be happy.
The elevator doors open and Y/N strolls out, taking Nathan’s key from the lanyard and heading to the door- out of all of his friends, she was the only one that had a key, he trusted her more than anything and if there was ever an emergency, he wanted her to go to him first. Unless it was super serious, then she should probably go to the police- but for any non life threatening, Nathan was her first line of defense.
“Honey I’m home!!” Y/N called out in a sing-song tune. She couldn’t help but coo and poke fun at her best friend- they acted so much like a married couple it was shocking that somehow they weren't already one. He really did mean the world to her and vice versa. If it wasn’t for timing and the fact that they had both always been just friends- they definitely could have been something.
Nathan rounded the corner with a bright smile upon his face. The first thing he noticed was the tired smile upon her lips. He couldn’t help but feel a slight pang of guilt run through his chest. It was definitely late and he had no idea if she was working a morning shift the next day, or how long her previous shift had been. That was the life of a nurse- always rotating hours and most times having to stay later than planned. It was certainly a con that he would have to think about, but he knew his schedule wasn’t that much better- he was away for weeks at a time, but he would have to figure it out- plenty of his senior players had worked it out, so there was no reason he couldn’t either.
The second thing that Nathan noticed was the box of cookies in her arms, wrapped with a satin bow and a smiley face drawn on the corner, he grinned- realizing that Y/N had packed him some on her way over and gone out of her way to decorate the box. She was always thoughtful like that.
“Hey you.” he smiled, walking towards her and helping her put down the last of her stuff, he wrapped his arms around her and gave her a peck on the top of the head before taking the cookies from her and letting out a soft moan of adoration. “You have no idea how badly I’ve been wanting these.” he told her.
The woman chuckled. “I had a feeling- the last time we hung out, you mentioned missing home… and while I can’t physically take you to springhill, I thought I could bring you something that reminded you of home.” she took his hand and gave it a squeeze.
Nathan’s heart clenched. How had he been blessed with such a perfect woman in his life? Letting out a sigh of content, he pressed his lips into a thin line. “Y/N- You are my home…” he gulped. “Which is why I wanted to ask you to come over here.” he admitted.
Looking up at him with confusion, there was a blink of innocence crossing the woman’s face, her eyes fluttering and sparkling. She let the man take her hand and lead her into the living room, her eyes glancing to the half empty glass of bourbon on the side table in front of the fireplace.
As he sat her down on the couch, she noticed two glasses of wine poured, the bottle was sitting not too far out of sight and she was unsure of where this was going. “Nate?” she asked softly, her voice coming out barely above a whisper, she couldn’t help but fear of what he was about to tell her.
Watching as he sat down, the hockey player smoothed his hands out across his dress pants- the material flexing around his thighs as he took a deep breath and calmed himself. Obviously whatever he was about to tell her was stressing him out, which only made Y/N’s fears flourish inside her pinched chest.
“I want us to have a baby.”
The words fell out of Nathan's mouth faster than he could catch them- stumbling off his tongue with a sloppiness that even he couldn’t help but cringe at.
Y/N was completely taken aback. She certainly wasn’t expecting that. Sitting in front of Nathan in total silence, her body was rigid- feeling like she was just been struck by lighting and dumped on with ice cold water- she was feeling way too many things and it was hard to process.
Before she could even ask him for more information, she reached out to the coffee table and grabbed the glass of wine. Chugging the red merlot down until her lungs burned. Nathan went to speak again but she held up a finger- grabbing the second glass and downing it as well. While it wasn’t as quickly, she needed something to take the edge off.
Clearing her throat, the woman looked at him dead in the eyes. Her own face wearing a mask of emotions- all ranging from fear, to concern and flattery. “You want us to have a baby….” she spoke slowly, just in case she had heard him wrong.
But against her wishes, Nathan nodded. “Yes- I know its sudden and we arent even together, but I have a proposition.” he explained.
Y/N let out a choked laugh. “You’re going to have to elaborate nathan- you can’t just say, “Lets have a baby.” and then not give me something to fall back on” she spoke pointedly.
The man nodded. “I’m getting to that.” he explained. “But first, I want to tell you everything i realized after having this idea.” he told her.
Letting her head fall, Y/N looked at the floor- this was a lot. But she had to keep an open mind if she was even going to entertain such a topic.
“When I thought of having a baby- the first thing that came to my mind was that I didn’t want the mother to be angela- well actually it was that I couldn’t physically have a baby myself but thats not the point-” he shuttered, cheeks flushing a glorious red.
“The point is- that i realized right away she wasn’t the one. She isn’t kind, she doesn’t care about children- my family doesn’t like her, and I don’t love her.” he explained. “But then there is you… you’re beautiful, funny, smart- passionate- you know my family better than you’re own… and I love you.” he admitted.
“I don’t know why I never said anything because its rather obvious that you love me too. I mean were pretty much soulmates- the whole best friends to lovers cliche was practically based on us.” he grinned.
Y/N shook her heard, trying to contain the warmth growing in her chest. “We aren't lovers nate.” she mumbled.
“But we could be! I’m so tired of going out with women who i could care less about- im so tired of sitting here and wasting my life… and I know that you feel the same.” he gave her hand a gentle squeeze.
Sighing softly, Y/N couldn’t help but frown. “You certainly haven’t wasted your life nate- and my romantic life isn’t something that you should worry about… Yes- I love you. But don’t you think that you should wait until you find someone… I don’t know- better?” she confessed.
The man gave her a heavy glare. “Y/N- I am only going to say this once, because i never want to hear such nonsense from you again- no one is better than you. I’ve been dreaming about us getting married since grade school… before the hockey, before the fame, there was you- and when it’s all said and done, i know that you’ll be there after too.” he reassured her.
Y/N blushed. “How are we even gonna have a baby nathan- we aren't even dating.” she chuckled.
Nathan grinned. “Well- I’m thinking we can include our decade plus of friendship as like kind of dating- or pinning if you will- we can go out for a little bit if you want, or we can just have a baby right away- personally i want to have a baby as soon as possible.” he mentioned.
“Neither of us are getting any younger and I’m so tired of waiting around just so that i can be deemed as acceptable by the world around me. I love you- you love me, lets make a fucking baby.”
His words certainly caught Y/N off guard, it was surprising. But what was even more surprising was the fact that she agreed.
“Okay- Let's do it.”
With widened eyes and a scarlet grin, Nathan flushed. “Really?” he had never felt more excited than in that moment. He really did think that there was going to be more push and shove from her.
Y/N nodded excitedly. “Yes- It’s a crazy idea and we might be really stupid for doing it. But I want a family, I want a baby. And you’re the love of my life- you already know it, I already know it, there might be a million reasons why we shouldn’t do this but who cares.” she threw her hands in the air.
This might have been a horrible idea, but Y/N felt confidently about it. She loved Nathan, it wasn’t a secret that they had been keeping from each other. They just never really acted on anything- there was no reason why, other than the two of them never being brave enough to make a move. They were comfortable in their friendship so why change it?
Nathan chuckled softly. “I’m really happy you feel the same way…” he admitted, wrapping her arms around her and hugging her tightly.
Pressing herself into his chest, her hands travelled up to the top of his spine- soothing his aching muscles from the long day.
She smiled into his embrace and hummed. “We’ll be great parents.” she reassured him.

Arulius paused chewing on the shark as he caught the twilight demon gazing at the sea.
“Marky what wrong?” he asked as he swam over. He bumped his head against the blue skinned man who blinked a few times and chuckled.
Marcus smiled and stroked the young leviathan’s head gently as he sighed. “I wonder if Nessie and I had a son he’d be like you?”
“Nessie?” Arulius tilted his head, a long ear flicking. He bumped against the demon again to try and get him to stroke his head, a playful chirp emitting from his throat.
“My… My fiance before I died.” Marcus sighed as he went back to gazing at the sea, “a wonderful mermaid who was killed when I was.” he ran his claws through Arulius’ hair with a hum. “Oh look how tangled it’s gotten, I swear your hair is as curly as mine.”
“Marky have hair?” the leviathan huffed and tried to pull himself onto the rock. Marcus sighed and waved a hand, red threads helping the sea monster up. Arulius laughed as he rolled to his back. He frowned, “Marky small.”
“No you are large, I am quite big by human standards, you are bigger.” Marcus shifted and his body flickered. He crossed his legs as the leviathan’s eyes grew wide as the former prince took a more human form. His silver hair ruffled with the wind. “See? I have curly hair as well.”
Arulius clapped excitedly, “Sho cool! Marky is cool!”
“I’m glad you think so my over sized sea gremlin.” Marcus snickered, “now come sit in front of your brother and let him fix your hair.”
“Okieee.” Arulius huffed and curled his tail up. He chittered and smiled broadly as Marcus began to comb his hair. His marked fingers worked to braid it and tie it with a red thread.
“Pretty!” Arulius moved to kiss the demon’s cheek before he fell back into the water with a laugh.
Marcus leaned on his hand, watching the 6 year old as he swam around the water, chewing on his shark. He closed his eyes with a heavy sigh.
