4637 words later, I finished writing a missing scenes fic from episode 4x18 and what I wanted to do first was show how Tim was smiling all the time and seemed truly happy and carefree in this scene. And for some 9 out of 10 pages, I was not convinced at all by what I was writing. I have yet to decide if it's worth publishing or not.
And then THEN in like the last paragraph I felt like I had something but it definitely came too late. I'm a bit disappointed here. I had something in my mind that I couldn't put into words as I wanted to, and when I'm finally writing something that I'm happy with, it has NOTHING to do with the idea I had to begin with.
Does that happen to anyone else?
Anyway. It's done. I'm giving myself some time to read it again in a few days, and I guess I'll decide then what to do with it.

So I woke up to some ppl on tumblr assuming that writing is a zero-sum game.
It's not.
You can set up the following seasons and make the current season exciting and interesting, and have a complete-ish arc.
"The Dragon Prince's" own season one did it.
And it boggles my mind because it's a mistake no novice writer would get away with in today's day and age. You don't query literary agents with a first in the series. You query with a standalone with series potential.
But from an old veteran full-time writer we're just supposed to keep quiet and accept it? Bullshit.
You can set up the next seasons and have a proper season finale with exciting magical and physical fights and clever solutions to problems at hand.
You can have Rayla brush off Callum's worries without acting OOC ("I trust you would snap out before hurting me, so I won't kill you").
You could've set up the importance of gifts for the earth dragon with *three* lines. (Ezran - he mentions the crown during his speech to Katolis and the Dragon Queen; Rayla - she mentions the blades while talking to Callum about how she was overtaken by revenge; Callum - he wants to return the staff to the spire cave after the sky elf's funeral but the Dragon Queen tells him to keep it).
I literally just needed a couple of minutes to come up with these.
The show's writers, all professional writers paid to work on this show full-time couldn't do it? Bullshit.
Stop excusing poor writing by "it was meant to be just a set-up," "it had to be this way" or "it's too high expectations."
It could be set-up and more, there's nothing set in stone, and I'm not expecting anything that I'm not expecting from my own writing.

the one thing i want to be able to do as a writer is make people come back to something ive written. i want that piece of text to haunt them, i want their thoughts to be briefly consumed by this. i want this to be something they remember long after its time. thats the one thing i want to do

This is a super super gentle reminder not to put your favorite authors on a pedestal. We're real people living average lives and not trying to be influencers. We criticize ourselves enough and we don't want to be held to an invisible standard (we start to worry we fail to exceed our own selves) or compared to other writers (we are not competing) or tailor our craft to cater to a wider audience (the right people will find you).

percy saying “i need you to promise me something” and annabeth immediately, without hesitation, telling him that she’ll do everything she can to save his mom. when before the quest percy was worried that annabeth would be the one to get him off track from his real goal, to get his mom back, if it got in the way of the actual quest. and then she doesn’t even think twice about it. i can’t.

Yall need to interact with fanfiction author's more.
So. After the ddos attack on ao3.
I was encouraged to write more comments and make my love known to fanfic writers.
I dont really like commenting. Because im a bit shy and soooo lazy.
Now though. I am writing more comments. And dude. This is so heartwarming. Ya'll need to treat writers better. They are doing the lord's work.
Take for an example, couple of days prior, i was searching for something interesting to read, and found an oneshot quite compelling.
I read it. At the end of it, i was blown away by how good it was. It promised me something and it went beyond my expectations. But then i saw a crime, zero fucking comments!
At that moment, i wasn't feeling up to writing a comment. Because, normally i like to write huge paragraphs. But because im lazy i decided to be brief.
Next day, the author answered that the comment lift their mood for the whole day.
That warmed my heart.
Duuuuuuuude! Write comments! Suport the writers of the fics you like! No need to be something super elaborate. Just give your thoughts. Freak out. Ramble. Ask something. Make theories. Compliment. Make a joke about how you wished to give kudos every chapter but ao3 sucks(not true bby) and won't let you.
Truly. Just. Comment. It can make someone's day. And that is part of the apeal of writing fics. Interacting with people.
Just give love to fanfic writers yall. They deserve this and so much more.

My enjoyment of writing, my productivity, and the quality of my work improved tenfold when I started embracing slumps and taking them as an opportunity to read everything I could get my hands on, watch lots of films and shows, go to the theatre, play games, hang out with friends, visit new places, and generally absorb life and marinate my brain in the art of storytelling.
Take from that what you will.

if they’re allowed to keep republishing the same booktok romances with different coloured clipart then everybody should be allowed to do magic school without being compared to h*rry p*tter. actually i think every queer writer should write magic school at least once just out of spite. take her out by numbers alone
