They took an old highway through the mountains with remarkable views along curvy, winding roads that were originally paved in the 1920s and impossible to follow. A fog settled over the valley and heavy white mists softened over the mossy mountains, dreamy yet haunted. Moments later when they checked the map to chart their progress, they were 20 miles off the road. North had suddenly turned into West like a compass spinning through the Bermuda Triangle. “How did we end up so close to the Blue Ridge Mountains?” Brenda asked. “You say that like it’s a bad thing.” Jennifer leaned out the window as they curved around the lush slopes and cut through the fog. “Can you imagine riding horseback through these mountains? She approached the icy shoreline. The lake was thoroughly frozen now, for a half mile at least. The morning sun was tucked away behind dusty gray clouds and if not for the slow-moving white ice along the horizon, there would be no distinguishing water from sky. She pulled her arms around her middle and braced against the wind. The man waiting at the water was no friend. He was grotesque in every way she’d always thought mattered. His skin was wrinkled and his eyes were hollowed out, hollow from the type of life he’d lived more than the duration he’d lived it. He was unkind and spoke from the bottom of his throat, always muffled and strange. No one could afford to be very picky about people anymore. But they hated each other anyways. . . . . . . A new year means what, exactly? That's right, folks, writing a lot, about our anger and isolation at the end of the world. When we reached out to traditional periodical presses to print installations of our stories, our material didn't receive a warm welcome.
