Recluse Owner, Bookshelf Gremlin, and the Cute Cafe Guy
A new bookstore/cafe opens, almost overnight, in Gotham.
They say it can find very rare books, heck maybe even books lost to time, unfinished manuscripts, rare writings from famous writers, etc etc.
As long as you respect the books within you won't have a problem with the recluse and introvert owner GW.
As for the cafe side, you can always count on friendly Danny to help you out, either it be an order from his cafe or to finding a book if GW isn't around. (Though beware of the younger, sometime around Dani (with an I) is working, she's a bit of a troll compared to her brother)
Jason totally is checking the place out... You know cause its totally giving weird vibes (good weird vibes, almost like its calming the raging Pits) and not just because it has a first edition Jane Austin (that the owner is totally maybe thinking of selling to Jason cause he can sense this man would treat it with respect)... Or that the tea is calming as heck.... Or watching Dani ("I like you. You can totally call me Ellie!") chaotically troll everyone around her.... Or that her older brother is fucking cute as hell... Who he may or may not had watched accidentally kill the Joker when the guy had been closing up the shop alone one night and had been caught in the alleyway on his way home...
No its totally cause this place is... off. Nothing else.

Writing Advice: Characterization
Writing characters can be really hard, and conveying personality to readers is just as difficult
I'm expert in this and I'm studying so take my word with a grain of salt
Here are some tips on writing characterization
Show don't tell of characterization
I'm sure my fellow writers are exhausted of hearing show don't tell, especially cause it's difficult to remember to do or master
And there's a lot of different ways to implement it, but I feel it means even more for characters because it gives you a chance to explore their personality
Sometimes it is better to tell, but many times showing grants you an upperhand take for example:
Character A was furious. Character B's voice was annoying them only further. They were ready to punch them in the face.
This can work, however it can easily bore the reader and goes little in the character or world themselves.
Character A glared at Character B, their arms tightly crossed, and leg impatiently tapping. All they could do was roll their eyes as Character B spoke. After all it got their mind off punching B in the face.
This is sentence shows more of the character. It shows that they have an attitude, and are more prone to punching people. I'm not good at explaining show don't tell, so I suggest looking into it, and remember that the rules aren't set in stone either.
Complexity
Character complexity helps aid the reader's suspension of disbelief and makes the characters feel more people-like. Not every character needs to be complex, and sometimes complexity isn't meant for one at all.
However it helps solidify a character, add more potential conflict to a story, and remove one-dimensionality.
Often times many stories start with one-dimensional characters and as installments and exploration increases, even the most silly characters become complex serious designs.
3 ways I prefer to show complexity
Show a character's thought process. Don't drown the reader in it, but dabble in character thoughts at moderate levels. Ig can help pacing anyway.
Give character groups opposing ideologies, beliefs, and ideas. Then show how these characters respond to them.
Give your characters bad traits and flaws. Don't stray towards hate-able personality, but understand that the world isn't black and white and neither shall your character be. The easiest way to do so and keep things complex is by extending already set positive traits. A character kind. Have them be too kind, let people go or trust people who shouldn't be trusted. Or they are kind to only certain groups of people, and need to learn to grow out of it.
Action
Actions, I'm not just talking about what your character does, although that is important too. Show me the character through how they do things, especially good to split up dialogue.
For example
Character A and B watched TV
This sentence works perfectly however if it is a moment where you're trying to characterize it can be utilized. For instance
The TV was playing a horror movie. Character A's eyes stayed glued to it, ignoring the fact that Character B was already clinging to them.
This tells you a lot more about the characters, and establishes a dynamic between the two as well.
Anyway that is all I can think off I hope this helps

How I Title My Books
1. I pull it from a line I’ve already written for the story.
For example, Hunting Ground comes from a conversation the MC has with her best friend, in which she equates her world’s courtship traditions to hunts.
2. I use a piece of the story’s world-building I’ve created (myths, locations, magic, etc)
For example, Lost Souls’ Night is named after an event that, according to some folkloric accounts, took place in ages past.
3. I create a list of words and phrases that convey the atmosphere and tone I associate with the story I’m trying to tell and shape a title from that
For example, The Bloody Divine and its duology title hint at the story’s genre and focus.

Hey, Olivie! I'm in need of advice, and a bit of assurance, but mainly advice.
Right now, the traditional publishing industry is - pardon my French - shit, and I'm in a bit of a pickle. I'm on the verge of querying my second manuscript, and for context, it was very well received by my closest circle, my critique partners, and several agents and editors who wanted to see the manuscript on their desks in 2022 during pitch events. However, revisions took a bit longer than anticipated due to school and work on my end. It's 2023 now, and I'm almost ready to submit, but now I'm not so sure of this book, or my career.
Trends come and go, and right now, I'm not sure if my book would do well in the current market. My first book, ironically, was a romantasy I wrote two years prior, and now, it might hypothetically do better. But that isn't the main point - I'm tired of writing projects that fall wayside of what's desired by agents and publishers mainstream, by just a couple of years or a couple inches off the mark. Additionally, right now, there are fewer agents and editors to go around due to several scandals I won't specifically name. It just feels like every single barrier is up against me right now. Publishing is a business, and I don't know if I'm a desired product.
I know my worth. I know I'm qualified, and I'm a writer with a fair bit of experience under my belt, but right now, I just don't know if the traditional industry is right for me or not, and I'm seriously doubting the idea of having a future part-time career - or even a full-time one eventually at all. I really don't want to go through indie publishing, since I don't have the resources nor time to market myself without a team on my side. And to be fair, I'm almost a college graduate (undergrad, senior), so this might be jitters talking, but so is my anxiety. I'm mixed Southeast/East Asian, so given publishing's fascination with slotting Asian voices into neatly packaged, "exotic" hashtag Diverse Voices Packages - I just don't know if my not-neat voice is wanted, or will ever be needed.
It would kill me, but...I don't know if I should just stop and come back in a couple of years, or just stop altogether. I'm not sure I'm strong enough to follow through with my current book and face another set of rejections, then write nine more books and face nine more rejections. TLDR: the pessimist in me is having A Time. any advice gladly appreciated!!!
okay
I'm not going to lie to you
I was nodding along sympathetically and then
I got to your age
and I burst out laughing
I laughed OUT LOUD oh my god my sweet summer child
(for reference: I am 34, I have no formal writing training, I started trying to get published when I was 27, I didn't see any success until I was 31, at your age I had a masters degree and a scholarship to law school and was very sure I was going to be a lawyer. I am. not one)
okay so laughter aside, please allow me to tell you gently, very gently, that at this age, you're not supposed to know what you want, you're not necessarily supposed to see your career, and you're not meant to understand if there is a place for you in the market until you try. look, I won't lie to you, traditional publishing is a life filled with rejection on every floor. there is no level of success where you will no longer hear no. and yeah, it's hard to find your way in—I tried for five years before I got my first publishing contract, and showed no particular success until a completely different self-published book went viral through essentially no doing of my own an entire year after that. everything that happens in publishing is a spectacular accident. and what's very crazy to me about the fact that I'm currently sitting in my third week on the nyt bestseller list is that this book was actually my first self-published book—I wrote it six years ago, when all of publishing was telling me no. I had no reason to believe I had any talent for writing, but I did it anyway, because I loved it and only felt alive while I was doing it. the fact that it is successful now, with nothing having changed along the way except for someone giving me a chance in this industry, is why I am laughing. because everything is an accident and all of this is mess.
so, the choices you make in publishing CANNOT be about external markers of success. it can't be about money (that is, beyond the question of how will you survive while writing—I could because I had a freelance job and my husband's income to help me. you'll need either family money, a partner with an income, or a job). it can't be about marketability. your desire to publish has to come from somewhere innate and you have to be able to take no and keep going. for the question of self/traditional publishing, the main issue is: do you want to run your own business? you can self-publish so long as you don't mind managing your own editorial, sales, PR, production, and marketing. if you have the resources to get started, and if it's a genre/age category that has shown success (adult SFF or romance), it is a totally valid way to make a living. if you, like me, prefer not to handle your own production/marketing etc, then traditional publishing is the way, but you will encounter all of the gatekeepers along the way who might say no. so you have to think how you're willing to deal with that, and how you will pay the rent and buy the groceries over the course of publishing's very lengthy timeline, where you will make your advance in 3rds (so about 1/3 per year through the production process) and likely have to consider supplementing your writing with a full or part time job.
basically, the point is: query the book. you have nothing to lose. do it now before the winter holidays because nobody in publishing reads over the holidays. don't worry about whether your voice is wanted. you already know it is. send it out. the worst you can hear is no. and then try again, or don't! but my advice is always shoot your shot, and your resiliency and adaptability is what will carry you through this process, more so than sweat or skill. getting an agent or a publishing deal is not what will make you believe in your talent. you have to believe in it now, and the love and the work you put into the stories you tell is what will be rewarded in time

Venom Jason DP X DC Crossover
We’ve seen variations if Danny cures Jason’s pit madness before, but what if doing so made things so much worse. Mild body horror ahead
Set up: Danny meets Jason, either off the clock or as Red hood. He senses something deeply messed up with him, aka the pit madness. Danny wants to help, but this is something he’s never seen before, maybe has heard vague whispers about, so when he can’t convince this man to go to another dimension with him(aka GZ Far frozen) he impulsively tries flushing whatever the hell this is out of Jason with ectoplasm and/or ecto dejecto.
Result: Jason starts to purge his body of the thing inside of him in the most horrifying way, out of his mouth nose and tear ducts. Gasping and surprisingly calm, he looks at the thing that came out of him. It’s red, amorphous, clearly living. and pissed,
So now the living embodiment of the pit rage is in search of a new host symbiote style. Now the struggle begins to get to the new host and free them from this thing before people get killed. Because, as they’re all about to find out, Jason was handling the rage surprisingly well.
in general, I like to think Tim becomes the unfortunate host because that just feels right and would make him much more understanding of the murder attempt. Bruce would be good because I think he could at least control himself a bit. Dick would jump straight to murder the boy has tried before multiple times and that’s without a pit.
In the end, unable to get rid of Jason offers himself as a host to free his family. The rage is back but it was nice to have had the break all things considered. Plus the symbiote now acts as a new helmet and reinforces his armor and strikes.
So yeah Venom Jason. Feel free to steal this if you want to.

I have a plot or “plots” ready but I never know how to start the story or the first chapter.
Does it have to start with the main character doing something?? I read so many books that I sometimes feel I’m plagiarising, which I don’t want to do.
Can you help me out please?
Hey anon!!! So glad you asked!!
First of all, if you take from one source it’s plagiarism but if you take from many it’s just art. As long as you’re putting your own spin on things and writing from your heart, you’ll be okay. It’s all been done before. There are no new ideas when it comes to stories, anyway. What’s new is your perspective and what you have to say about the ideas. It may have been said before, but never by you.
Most books do start with the main character doing an action, it’s usually to help draw the reader in. But you don’t have to do that! You can set the scene ( like in Rebecca) or you could explore the main idea/metaphor your story will be about ( like in pride and prejudice).
But heres my experience: every time I start a story for the first time, that’s never the start I end up with when it’s done. I usually cut the first two or three scenes and start it where the story really picks up. This is usually a scene where the main character is doing something, though.
The starting scenes that get me writing are mostly describing what the first couple of plot points are supposed to be in the perspective I want to write in. I go as far as I can with the plot synopses, and Then I expand from there. Once you have a few ideas down, you can start putting in details, or you can focus on parts that you care about. You can decide what’s plot and exposition later, when you’re just starting, focus on what you’re excited about and what you love in the story. The rest will come with time 💖

Desmond in inFAMOUS (preferably second son) sounds like it would potentially be funny. He survives the solar flare and now he can suddenly shoot lasers out of his hands. Is this more isu bullshit?! (I personally think I’d be ironic if he was a sunlight conduit, because “throw my near death experience in my face why doncha?!”)
(also I hope ur surgery goes well. Don’t forget 2 take it easy!)
If you really want to throw Desmond’s near death experience right to his face, making him a conduit directly connected to the sun would be fun.
For example, his main conduit power manifests like a spherical blast similar to the waveblast of an Apple but with the intense heat of the sun.
To be more exact, he can blast out small bursts of solar flares.
That would definitely make Desmond think that the Isus were definitely screwing with him once more.
Plus, to make this stranger, all the Conduits are humans with higher than normal Isu to humans DNA ratio and Desmond’s special even in this sense because Delsin can’t absorb his powers.
This would make Delsin be both curious and a bit wary of him while Desmond is just going to chalk that up to being the Isu’s favorite chew human (not a good toy).
Maybe the activation of Conduits in this setup would be due to Desmond saving the world from the Solar Flare and the real reason why Delsin can’t absorb Desmond’s Solar powers?
Because Desmond isn’t actually a Conduit.
Not the same way everybody is anyway.
Desmond’s body couldn’t handle the activation of the device and his body changed to try and absorb the power instead of being damaged beyond repairs.
In the end, this manifested in a power similar to a Conduit but not the same thing.
The Conduits naturally awakened but Desmond?
Desmond was artificially changed by Isu tech to save him.
