Writing a Witch Character, Respectfully
This is by no means a complete list, but it'll hopefully lay a foundation of things to keep in mind so that you can write a good character while still being respectful to real people and traditions.
Look at actual magical traditions to compare your magic system to. Obviously it's your work of fiction and you can create your own rules, but it can help provide some frame of reference. It'll also help you avoid unintentionally coding a 1:1 stand-in for an existing tradition.
Harmful stereotypes about witches often have roots in racism, antisemitism, and the satanic panic. Avoid terms like "black magic" which are used to demonize afrodiasporic religions (especially Vodou) and Santería. Avoid having your witches kidnap people, especially children, in order to use/drink their blood (this is called blood libel.) Avoid cabals of evil witches secretly conspiring to control the world, or who already do. (Another antisemitic trope.) Make sure your super-earthy witch who can talk to animals isn't an anti-indigenous charicature.
Be mindful of Wiccan-based stereotypes. Wicca dominates a LOT of magical discussion, especially from an outside perspective, but is definitely not representative of all witches. Ideas such as the threefold law, the "burning times," a single important Goddess, or heavy emphasis on the moon and wombs/fertility is really stale to read about, especially if all witchcraft is portrayed as being like that. It's okay play with those themes, but make sure you're not stacking too many on top of each other or just writing about a Dianic Wiccan.
When writing about a real tradition you aren't a member of, study the hell out of it and talk to members of that tradition. They can help provide more specific details about what is/n't respectful and even give insight into the tradition that may help develop the character. Be sure to compensate people for their labor.
ALSO when writing about a real tradition you aren't a member of, (or a fictional tradition that's coded as a real one) make sure it's really your story to tell. It's great to write about characters who are different from you, but some stuff can only be written from lived experience. While not all magical practices are closed or marginalized, it's inappropriate to profit off someone else's oppression. If your story/character is all about what it means to be X in today's world, grappling with one's identity as X, or what it's like to experience bigotry against X, consider lifting up X writers telling their own stories instead.
People are still people. Just like other characters, people's lives don't usually revolve around only one thing. I'm a witch, but I also have a career, love life, hobbies, and interests completely outside of that. Let your witches be three-dimensional.
If critiquing the character's (fictional) magic beliefs/tradition, make sure you're still doing it from a place of respect for real people. It's really cool to see characters realize something they believed in isn't real, watching them grapple with this new information and the impact that has on their worldview. It's really annoying to see authors use that scene to say, "Haha, look how stupid they are for believing in things. What a hack." If it's a real tradition, just don't. You'll just come off as an asshole.

✨my favorite ways to create fantasy names (for characters, kingdoms, etc.)✨
ok, ever been stuck in the slump of fantasy/sci-fi names and just had no ideas? because i have :D over the past many months (pfft), i’ve discovered a few ways to come up with names for fantasy characters, kingdoms, places, etc., and they can easily be adjusted to how “weird” (aka not common in a place you live in reality) you want said names to be :)))
these are all ways i come back to time and time again, so i figured i’d compile them :DDDD
keyboard smash :D
just smash some names, then narrow it down. for example:
sfndlk marsihfsu akjfjfufs
[safdink] [marishsu] [akfifus]
[sadink] [marrishsu] [akfiyus]
some names :DDD make them as “normal” or as “weird” as you want :)))
take normal names and switch them up
take a name like...sophie. and you can leave it as sophie. it’s really pretty, and a lot of my character names are “normal” names.
but if you want to change it a bit, try combing two names or switching up the letters a little. if you want it to look cooler, try adding extra letters.
aidden, sofie, marrkus, etc.
nameberry.com
it has thousands and thousands of existing names, most of which you’ve probably never heard of, and the generator (linked above) can be narrowed down by sounds within the name (like “ch”) and syllables in the name :)))
fantasy name generator
well, here’s an easy one. you generate a name that sounds cool, maybe change it up a bit if you’d like :D

What is an Ask-A-Thon?
Are you a writer? Do you wish you had more asks or more questions to answer about your WIPs because you're new or just because? Do you wish there was one place to find all of those lovely questions? Do you want a place to find similar writers and mutuals?
Well here you go!
The first blog had some trouble. Some drama trouble that is no one's business anymore. This blog is now run by two people: Myth and Aster. And will always be run by us so that the issues that popped up before will, hopefully, never happen again. I, Aster, am not placing blame on any one person, or people, because I just want to run this blog and help the community foster interaction and to make writers feel loved and treasured, as you all should be!
If you'd like to join to be asked questions, please go here to see what I'm talking about!
If you'd like to answer questions then feel free to reblog and answer to your heart's content! No one is locked out of answering or reblogging.
If you'd like to help with this blog, I'm not currently allowing that at the moment. There will be an announcement or I will update this post when that's something I can handle.
If you want to ask your own questions, please do. I only ask that you don't say you're from this team. I'd appreciate if you said something along the lines of: "I'm participating in ask-a-thon! [Insert your question here]", as I will be asking in a different and consistent way each time.
Thank you and I hope you all enjoy this blog!

🍰 (this is cheesecake apparently) for the sweet ask game?
Hey MK thanks for the ask! (From this sweet themed ask game)
🍰Cheesecake ~ What is your process to making and developing a character?
Well the making of the character usually is just "hm, I need a character."
I usually go to Behind the Name to think of a name. Usually, I'll filter by ethnicity + gender (inc unisex), but especially ethnicity, maybe meaning. But I do pay attention to meaning for SOTL names. Sometimes I will think of a name off the top of my head, but not always. For background characters, I usually recycle a dumped character name or have a fun reference to something.
Character design and personality don't have a process exactly, it's usually just Vibes. For TSP, the cast made me work super hard to make everyone distinct, and I like the way it turned out. I spent a very long time crafting basic stuff for everyone, putting down basic traits, how they'd react to X emotions, etc in order to make it work. How they get angry/express anger, what makes them anger, how likely are they to express it. How secretive are they. Confidence level? How easily bored are they? What makes them bored? How are they at their best? Their worst? What gets them to that point? How do they deal with stress? Etc.
I've changed names when I find the name boring/it's just not working. Similar process. I also think really hard about character design if I'm also bored with a character's design. Niri is the most recent example of this. Changing his wardrobe and hair did wonders.
Developing a character takes time, and despite taking months of time focusing on them, I'm still finding myself adding things. Recently focused on their music tastes and in the background am thinking about what their bedroom looks like. Multiple outfits are hard for me to think of, so I gave everyone a basic style and swapped things out occasionally, but also gave everyone a different color palette.
Working on character dynamics with each other is also helpful - what do they have in common vs where do they clash? Perfect for thinking up fun scenes to highlight their differences and/or similarities - which leads to pairing characters I never considered.
Hope this was comprehensive enough!

8 Tactics To Prove Your Characters Are REAL Friends! 🔐
Character interaction is very important and key in a story. When wanting to accomplish a certain goal bad or good, your protagonist will need to have at least some supporting characters to really help them.
Here are some tips to improve your writing and make your characters worth dying for! Friendships that feel, look and sound real!
The awkward stage needs to happen before the real stage: like instant love, instant friendship is equally as weird. How is it that you can glance at someone and feel the click? Unless your characters have been watching each other’s actions and are intrigued/interested in their responses they can’t feel that. Have your characters communicate with each other about themselves, start simple, their favourite colour or whatever and then let them share more about themselves and come into contact more. This is a skill that romance authors like to use, they put two characters in situations that bring them together every time and force them to interact. We’re not aiming for exact romance but rather a platonic relationship that leaves readers thinking “I love that character I hope to see more of them in the future.”
Characters that are already friends: Show us how they’re friends. Let them be the type who is always there to comfort them, tell them what they need and give advice. Also! Don’t have just one character doing all the work! A real relationship needs both people to be involved in each other and nurture one another. How can you have a character say they’re best friends but never have their back?? Please work on both characters and give them a reason why they care about each other. What has the other done for them? Don’t make them blindly loyal all the time!
Your characters are not decorations or a criteria to be met: I have read too many books and watched too many shows that leave this “best friend” as a background character. They are uninvolved in the plot or storyline, they have no idea what’s going on with the protagonist, and worse of all the protagonist goes on chapters and chapters with little to no interaction with their supposed “best friend”. You can’t keep doing this with characters in your world, even if your protagonist is a secret hero or an agent, isn’t the whole point of the story the intensity of never knowing and having mystery and secrets? The protagonist should feel bad for hiding so much information from their good friend and everyday the friend should feel like they are losing their friend ESPECIALLY if they really are best friends then that character is actively working towards finding out their secret. Add some mystery, some suspense, if there is no mystery or suspense in your story then your book is NOT IN THE RIGHT CATEGORY. Don’t bait readers into believing we are reading a suspense novel and whiplash us like this. Believe it or not, you can involve the friend in their personal life too, it can still be suspense in many other ways but I’m telling you now that if there wasn’t a reason to make your readers care about this “best friend”, to make us worry about their safety, reputation etc… then don’t give your protagonist a “best friend”, that is just a classmate/workmate.
Don’t have characters spoil every little detail of their lives immediately: Think about how strange would it be if someone who isn’t your closest friend did that to you the first time? It’s a bit unrealistic to get someone to immediately open up to you. And no “they’re the protagonist/they are just a really good talker” doesn’t work. Even if your character is a master manipulator it takes some time to have someone become manipulated it’s not instantaneous and easy or else you’d have everyone be a manipulator and that wouldn’t be so interesting and fun anymore would it? Put your characters into situations that reveal to us little by little who they are. Now as the reader we may know more about the protagonist but the protagonist doesn’t automatically know everything about everyone. What if this friend of theirs has a bad memory or past history? What makes this character think our protagonist is worthy enough to let them be vulnerable? How does the protagonist give their friend the attention they need and deserve and what makes them drawn to them? The mystery is what keeps a reader reading, do not tell us everything or else what’s the point? Let the readers SEE what’s going on in their lives so we know who this person is. It’s boring to focus on the protagonist all the time! Keep us questioning and put the answer in the next chapter, we don’t want plot holes. Then throw in another NEW question at the end of that chapter to keep us hungry for MORE. We want to feel worried not only for the protagonist but their friend as well and how this will affect their friendship. Remember: the story should be about changing. A book that starts and ends the same is pointless, what did we read it for?
The comparison: This is optional for a character that is very social or even just a little socially extroverted. Give your protagonist multiple friends, have them all with their flaws, each one of their own lives different. Then overtime let your protagonist begin to hang out with one or a small group of characters in particular more often. Let them filter out their friends and choose the one friend they believe is best for them. That lets readers feel closer to this one character and ALSO believe that they are the best and most trustworthy. The more we interact with them, the more we hear or see them in the story, the more emotionally attached we become. Humans are programmed in a way to choose what is best for us to succeed in life, you need to understand that this applies to your characters too. If you have already applied all the reasons listed then your protagonist will be able to express vulnerability with this character too and vice-versa. Each person should have slowly been proving to each other that they are suitable to become life long friends. That way when we see our friend in any situation the reader can immediately think “OH! I know that character!”
Good friends don’t need to have everything in common!: One of the worse and boring things that could possibly happen in your novel is characters that share similarities on everything! Where is the creativity in variations? What are we supposed to work with? This is bland and will kill your story. You can still have a lot of common interest and even just one single difference but it will be harder to work with. Having differences is good, trust me. But you might be wondering… won’t that make them fight a lot? Refer to Number 7 below!!
Have them argue: You can’t possibly convince a reader that your two or three etc… characters are all best friends and seemingly never had an argument. How will the reader know how they overcome their differences and handle a problem together? We need to see how well they do in solving issues between them and sharing their thoughts and feelings. That’s how you can flesh out a character really well. Plus this is a really good setup for a character arc of emotional, physical, and spiritual development. We need to see what makes them keep coming back and holding onto their friendship every time.
If your characters hated each other to start: This is very similar to the above Number, you may have a novel where you got characters who used to hate each other but now it’s awkward. Those enemies can still argue! Yes! Because as we’ve stated we can see them fix problems and work together. This will bring them closer and— trust me if you do it really well you can take the “best friends path” or the “turned lovers path”. The power will be all to you!
